Michael Camelo Jr. HOMETOWN HERO
Submitted by Andrea Schuck, CCFD Public Information Officer
Engineer/Driver Michael Camelo Jr. was born and raised in Cape Coral.
He essentially grew up in a Cape Coral firehouse with his father, Michael
Camelo, Sr., who retired in 2013 as a Cape Coral Fire Lieutenant after 36
years of service. After graduating from Mariner High School and
working for ~7 years as a manager at Publix, Camelo followed the call
of the fire service and began his career as a firefighter with the Cape Coral Fire Department on February 27, 2006.
On February 10, 2018 he was promoted to Fire Engineer/Driver. He was
also a Paramedic, a Hazardous Materials Technician, a Public Safety Boat Operator, a member of the Firefighter Survival and Rapid Intervention
Team, and served on the Honor guard. Camelo was committed to
continuing his education and ensuring he stayed apprised of advancements in the fire service. He received an A.S. in Fire Service from
Columbia Southern University in 2017 and held Fire Officer I, Fire Safety
Inspector I, Instructor I, and Live Fire Training Instructor I certifications.
Camelo’s enthusiasm for training had reaches far beyond the Cape Coral
Fire Department. He was a Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor, teaching countless citizens the lifesaving procedure of CPR. He was a beloved
instructor for the Cape Coral Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), training them in basic disaster response skills, specifically search and rescue and disaster medical operations.
In April, Camelo attended Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) International as a recipient of the Honeywell-DuPont 2018
Scholarship. FDIC International is the fire service’s premier source of
advanced training on firefighting tools, tactics and safety for first responders, and the Honeywell-DuPont Scholarship is a prestigious
honor. Scholarship recipients are nominated by their peers and awarded
by an independent panel; only 20 first responders throughout the
country were selected.
While these are all impressive accomplishments, Camelo was proudest of being a father to his two children, Anna and Michael Camelo, III.
On May 31 at 2:52pm, surrounded by his family and friends and with
members of the Cape Coral Fire Department standing vigil, Engineer Camelo succumbed to the effects of a brain aneurysm. His funeral was on June 7 with approximately 1000 people in attendance and over 30
apparatus from the five-county region joining in the procession.
“Engineer Camelo was beloved by his family, his fellow Brothers and
Since 2013, Camelo was an instructor at the Fort Myers Fire Academy.
The impact he had on the young recruits coming through the Academy
is immeasurable. He was one of the Academy’s best adjunct instructors. He consistently maintained a positive attitude, was extremely motivated,
and was always willing to go the extra mile for the students.
Sisters, and the community,” said Fire Chief Ryan Lamb. “He was involved
in every facet of the organization and was fiercely dedicated to the fire
service. His loss will not only be felt by his family and the CCFD, but the entire Southwest Florida community.”
Michael Camelo, Jr. was the epitome of a Hometown Hero. Our
thoughts and prayers continue to be with his wife, his kids, his extended
family and friends throughout Southwest Florida and the firefighting
community.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe, irreversible vision impairment in the United States. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina supplying central vision. There are two types of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD, also known as atrophic or non-exudative AMD, is the most common form, accounting for at least 80 percent of patients with AMD. It tends to progress slowly over many years to affect central vision. Despite the smaller population of patients with wet AMD, also known as neovascular or exudative AMD, this group accounts for 90 percent of severe vision loss from AMD.
those who took supplements with beta-carotene. This is important since beta-carotene can increase risk of lung cancer in smokers. Also, for a subgroup of participants with very low levels of antioxidants in their diet, adding these new antioxidants to the AREDS formulation helped lower their risk of advanced AMD and even decreased progression to cataract surgery. These findings allowed for the creation of an improved AREDS2 formulation.
The National Eye Institute sponsored a clinical trial called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), which evaluated the use of a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, betacarotene and zinc for patients with varying degrees of macular degeneration. The study found that people at high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD lowered their risk by about 25 percent, recommending patients with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in at least one eye take AREDS supplements with this formulation of antioxidants and zinc to decrease risk of vision loss from AMD.
vegetables and natural omega 3 fatty acids, wear sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection and exercise regularly. Those with intermediate or advanced AMD are recommended to take AREDS2 formula eye vitamins. Each eye should be checked daily with an amsler grid, a square box with vertical and horizontal lines surrounding a central point of fixation. Straight lines that become wavy may be a sign of wet AMD, and an eye doctor should be contacted immediately. Early intervention has revolutionized outcomes for patients with wet AMD by decreasing progression and sometimes even improving vision. While genetic testing is available for genes associated with AMD, its routine use is not supported by the current literature and not recommended at this time.
Reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration
Another study, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), was created to evaluate whether adding different antioxidants (lutein and zeaxanthin) along with omega 3 fatty acids to the AREDS formulation could decrease the risk of developing advanced AMD. It also evaluated the effect of eliminating betacarotene and lowering the dose of zinc. The study showed no additional benefit in lowering the risk of advanced AMD by adding these new items to the original AREDS formulation. However, participants who took AREDS supplements containing the newer antioxidants with no beta-carotene had a slight reduction in the risk of advanced AMD compared to

MOVIE REVIEW
Only Lovers Left Alive By Rachel Roth
Ranked 72 on the “BBC’s list of 100 Greatest Films since 2000” international critic poll, starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, I present Only Lovers Left Alive. A hypnotic piece of cinema written with the prose of poetry. Beautiful and elegant, a combination of Gothic darkness and century bound true love that crafts a work of art with one of the best modern soundtracks ever created thanks to minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem.
Released in late 2013, it slipped under the radar and continues to remain there, going unnoticed by thousands of movie watchers who have never heard of it. It received no major advertising and barely made its money back at the box office. Its main fan base is film buffs, Jim Jarmusch fans and major Marvel Loki fans. For those who haven’t seen any of the Marvel films, Tom Hiddleston plays a fan favorite character named Loki in the MCU. As a diehard Loki fan, I promise Only Lovers Left Alive is a fantastic Loki fix between Marvel movies.
A modern twist on the typical vampire tale in which two vampires, married centuries ago, live in two different places in the world. They’ve lived so long that they don’t need to be in one another’s company. One in Tangier and one in Detroit, they communicate through phone calls and FaceTime until they achingly reunite with a most passionate non-sexual reunion, complete with forehead touching, sensual hand stroking and snuggling.
Adam and Eve are honestly the least vampire-y vampires. Adam spends his time composing music and inventing, while Eve dances and reads the thousands of books she has stacked up against the walls. They’re old and they act it. They act the way vampires probably would if they weren’t fictional.
10
Tom Hiddleston perfectly personifies a handsome, poetic, dark soul that romantics will swoon over ten minutes in. He's a melodramatic, suicidal vampire pondering the purpose of his life. Despite the incredible dreamlike music he composes, he cannot look past the darkness any longer.
Tilda Swinton, unique as always, captures the audience’s imagination as a true creature of the night. Through her graceful ethereal presence, dressed in all white, with white hair and pale chalk skin, she embodies a vampiress more Goddess like than Hiddleston’s ominous animal in black clothes, long black hair and deep stare. Watching Eve’s optimism clash with Adam’s pessimism is nothing short of delightful. You really feel as if these two have been together for thousands of years. Without damsels in distress or onscreen violence, Only Lovers Left Alive sets itself apart from the vampire tales we’re used to, but director Jim Jarmusch does drawl themes from vampires’ original origins. Originally sad creatures forever cursed to never receive rest, vampires weren’t always sexed up, fun-loving night prowlers, and Jarmusch touches on this fact.
The late actor, Anton Yelchin, symbolizes innocent, ignorant humanity drawn in by the mysterious vampires. Though they have no bad intentions, it is his inability to resist their presence that becomes his downfall. Throughout the film's journey, we are brought into the loving marriage of Adam and Eve and their love for all things beautiful. But it is during the film’s end that Jarmusch chooses to remind us that no amount of music or love stories will change the fact that they are predators tormented by an unfortunate need to drink blood.

This month we dive into the local flavors at Big Storm Brewery in Cape Coral.
Big Storm's best seller and year-round available beer is the Palm Bender, an IPA with ABV (Alcohol by Volume) of 7.3% described as a floral, citrus and uncompromising.
The appearance of Palm Bender is golden/brown and cloudy. The beer was a medium body and held its foamy head for a couple of minutes. The mouthfeel is crisp and lightly carbonated. Each sip had a sweet bitter bite that become stronger and more apparent the more you enjoyed this refreshing beverage. The smell was mild, but a very pleasant citrusy, grapefruit aroma.
The Palm Bender punches your pallet with a very balanced hoppy and sweet taste. For an IPA, this beer is not as bitter and hoppy as one might expect for a micro-brewerie’s IPA. The taste was pleasant, and the beer goes down smooth, leaving a robust flavor resonating in your mouth long after you have finished your sip, encouraging you to continue sipping this strangely unique IPA.
Overall a very pleasant local brew with a slow tasteful buildup on your pallet. The flavor rests in your mouth and every sip seems to be better than the last, with the final sip urging you to order another round.
In summary, if you’re looking for a balanced IPA with an extra kick (ABV on the higher end), Palm Bender is a solid choice. Per my taste buds, I rate this beer at 3.65 out of 5 (73% out of 100%).

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
2018 Hurricane Season: KNOW YOUR ZONE! Submitted by Thomas Evans, Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Cape Coral The impact of Hurricane Irma last September was a reminder of how powerful Mother Nature can be. Hurricane Irma was the first hurricane to directly impact the State of Florida since 2005.
The 2018 Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st and ends November 30th. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts 10-16 named storms this year, with 1-4 of those classified as major hurricanes.
With the peak of hurricane season being August – September, we ask that you take the time NOW to prepare your home and family for another long season.
Evacuation
One of the leading topics discussed in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma was the impact of evacuating. Between the crowded freeways, Sold Out signs on gas pumps and busy shelters, it seemed everyone had to face one struggle or another leaving their residences. In a phased manner, the city evacuates residents by zone from official predictions of storm surge and wind. This mean that the Emergency Management Office may call for evacuating before the storm or its effects may be felt. This allows citizens to evacuate and travel more safely.
If your Zone is not under an evacuation order, and if you feel safe in your home, then what you would do is shelter in place and have an emergency kit available with enough supplies for your family for 72 hours. If you must evacuate, please have an idea of where you are going (shelter, hotel, friends house,) how you will get there and what supplies you will need for you family for the next 72 hours. Sheltering
If you and your family need to evacuate and you decide to go to a shelter, please be prepared. A shelter is a place of safety during the storm. If you go to a shelter, make sure to bring your emergency kit. The amount of supplies needed should support you and your family for 72 hours. The emergency kit may contain prescription medication, important personal property information, personal identification cards, kid friendly games (non-battery), clean clothes, bedding, cash, food and water. Know your Zone
Here in Cape Coral, the thing to remember is “we hide from wind and run from water!” Contrary to what you may believe, a hurricane’s wind speeds are not the biggest threat to your life. The bigger danger is storm surge and flooding. The City of Cape Coral is divided into three evacuation zones (A, B, and C.) These zones are based off flood maps that have been prepared for the City. Knowing what zone you are in will determine if you need to evacuate. Please visit the Lee County Emergency Management website (www.LeeEOC.com) to discover in what zone you live.
12
If you have a pet, make sure you visit www.LeeEOC.com to review pet friendly shelter information. Pet friendly shelters would expect that you bring all necessary supplies to feed and care for your pet for at least 72 hours.
Government officials are committed to working with citizens in order to prepare for and respond to all emergencies (including tropical storms and hurricanes). We hope that the above information will assist you to be better prepared for this hurricane season. If you would like a copy of the Lee County All-Hazards Guide or to learn more about how to be better prepared, please contact the Cape Coral Emergency Operations Center at (239) 573-3022.

WINE
Hoor ay
( P a rt
I)
for R os By Mary Jane Ba ker Vu, C
With the summer heat upon us and the “Rosé All Day” promotion in full force, it seems fitting to discuss a very common yet misunderstood category of wines. Clearly, rosé suffers from nothing more than an erroneous negative reputation because when speaking to folks in the wine industry, there is only praise and appreciation for the class. However, the regrettable era of White Zin lingers, clouding the casual wine drinker’s opinion of the entire group of wines to this day.
Sommeliers around the country lull themselves to sleep at night repeating the refrains: No, rosés are not made from pink grapes; no, rosés are not red and white wines mixed together; no, rosés are not all sweet; no, rosés are not considered entry level wines for the uninitiated. Henceforth, it is helpful to note what exactly rosés are and to debunk these misnomers one by one.
Simply put, rosés are pink-hued wines made from red grapes. Rosés differ from red wines because, during the production process, the extracted grape juice is in contact with the red grape skins for only a short amount of time. This limits the rosé wine’s ability to acquire the vibrant red color of their red wine brethren whose juice is in contact with the red grape skins for an extended period of time.
14
é
SW
Even casual rosé drinkers are likely to note the variety of shades in which the wine presents itself. From pale baby pink through burnt sunset orange to cherry soda red, the tints are determined by the amount of time the juice spends in contact with the grape skins, the grape variety that comprises the wine and the winemaker’s preferences.
In all wines, including rosés, the winemaker determines the sweetness of the wine by stopping fermentation when the wine has reached the desired level of residual sugar. During the process of fermentation, yeast continually consumes sugar and produces alcohol until the sugar is completely depleted or until the winemaker halts the process to leave some amount of sugar to balance the resulting wine. This means that rosés, like all other wines, come in versions ranging from very sweet to very dry. If a rosé is sweet, it can be called blush. It is helpful to remember, though, that blush is not a synonym for rosé because even though all blushes are rosés, not all rosés are blushes.
Check back with us in September’s issue of Cape Style Magazine for the second half of this article where we will delve into the numerous processes used to make rosé wines. Until then, please remember to say Hooray for Rosé!

focus, however, after experiencing the enforcement side of the law through ride-alongs with friends who were members of the police
force. Risking disappointing his parents, Coston, wanting to do more
for his community, joined the Fulton County Police Department.
During his three years there, the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, he worked in the high crime Atlanta metropolitan area, learning much
from his work with the Georgia community.

respected the way that Chief Gibbs supported his people.”
Coston moved his family here, serving as a patrol officer for two years
before being offered a position as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at
Caloosa Middle School.
“There was a vision to change what the SRO was, from a safe, end-
of-career position, to one which involved young, energetic officers,
who would be more interactive with the kids. This new role would involve both forming positive relationships with the students, while
also allowing the officer to gather intelligence on juvenile and gangrelated crime within the community,” Coston explained.

During his three years attached to the FBI, Coston worked on domestic and international terrorism cases with ties here to southwest Florida, and achieved what very few task-force officers ever achieve: he became an
adjunct instructor for the FBI Academy, teaching agents how to recruit confidential human sources.
Returning to Cape Coral, Coston again returned to the streets as Patrol
Sergeant. It was during a conversation with (then) Chief Jay Murphy that
Coston’s career took a turn. At the time, Murphy was seeking to modernize the department after years of recession-era budget cuts. He
asked Coston’s opinion on how he thought that could be best accomplished; an updated website, as well as a social media presence on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, were among Coston’s suggestions.
“It was a time where the media portrayed a less than positive view of
the department, and we needed to tell stories from the Police
Department's point of view. A person representing the Department needed to be in front of the camera. We needed to post videos showing
the things our officers did well, in addition to mistakes that were made, for the public to see, Coston recalled.
A few days later, he got a call from the Chief that he and another officer, (then) Lieutenant Tony Sizemore,
would be the members of the newly created Public
Affairs Office. This office that didn’t exist yet, but would be “extra duties and responsibilities as they took on roles in the Professional Standards Bureau.
“The job has changed quite a bit since then, Coston
explained, recalling his promotion seven years ago.
Bureau, efficiently keeping up with the growing demands of the
community. His new job will include overseeing existing programs like With a Cop.
“It will be our job to keep up with new technology and innovation. While we don’t want to be beta-testers for new advances, we do want to keep
up with the times - the latest trends, newest technology, etc. For example, agency-wide we plan to expand the use of body cameras, drones, and social media.
Due to recent events, the program most visible will be Cape Coral’s reentry to the School Resource Officer Program.
“After Stoneman Douglas, the state mandated that police officers be in
all schools. Chief Newlan stepped up, insisting that Cape officers be in
all Lee County District schools located within the city to balance the
schools’ needs with department wants. CCPD used to have a presence in all schools in Cape Coral before the recession forced the City, and thus the Department, to reduce our budget.
Coston plans to use this program to rebuild relations with Lee County
Schools, as well as the students of Cape Coral, engaging them with what
they know and understand.

room, a small hand-held camera to video interviews, and an old laptop, brought from home, to create and
update social media pages for the department.
This new department went against all conventional
wisdom of the time, bringing more transparency to
department activities. Though many were against the use of Social Media, Coston used the relatively new
medium to his advantage, posting department
briefings online at the same time they were given to
the press. Since that time, the program, and
department, have become a model for others within the nation.

“School Resource Officers have such a
unique opportunity to close a gap that
exists in our community, the department, and in our kids’ lives in three key ways.
First, through mentorship, our officers will
be able to connect with and provide
guidance to kids, helping them make
positive decisions, build character, and
grow into responsible young adults. Some
of these kids don’t have that.”
“Second, through education, SROs can
provide valuable lessons to kids about
safety, and the law, so that they can
understand the consequences of unsafe
or even criminal behavior.”
“Finally, through law enforcement, our
officers will keep our kids safe by enforcing
the law in and around our school
campuses. Through this program, we can
augment the efficiency of the CCPD, enhancing
services
provided,
while
building strong connections with the
youth in our community.”
Leaving the Public Affairs Office in the
capable hands of Master Sergeant Allan
Kolak, Coston is looking forward to the challenges of his new role, continuing to
serve his community in a different
capacity, while bringing the same energy
and enthusiasm to his new position. If his
past record is any indication, building the Community Services Bureau will be
another shining success on Coston’s resume.

A More Tailored Approach for Women
Women often look at investment decisions differently than men and with good reason. • Because of salary discrepancies, many women start the investment process with fewer investable assets than their male counterparts. • Thanks to longer life spans, women often must find ways to make their assets last longer. Planning Tax Payments to Avoid Penalties Properly structuring tax payments requires careful planning, especially in light of tax reform Submitted by Rebecca Ross Withholding and Estimated Tax Payments
Individuals who are working are required to have income taxes with-
held directly from their salary. Taxpayers who have little to no in-
come other than their salary usually find their withholding is more
than enough to cover their targeted tax payment, and they often
end up with a refund when they complete their tax return. The exception to that might be those with larger bonuses, stock option income, etc., where a flat percentage is withheld that may be less than the actual tax rate applied to that income.
Those who have income that is not required to be withheld on –
such as investment income, business income or retirement distributions – may find they need to make additional tax payments
throughout the year. These payments are calculated by the taxpayer and delivered to the IRS along with a payment voucher, Form 1040-
ES. These estimated payments are due on the quarterly deadlines, and late payments of those may result in a penalty being assessed until the payment is received by the IRS.
Taxpayers who find they missed a payment deadline should not wait
until the next payment due date to catch up. The underpayment
penalty is calculated on a daily basis, so the sooner the payment is made, the sooner the penalty stops.
For taxpayers whose only income is from a business or investments,
where withholding is not typically available, estimated payments are
likely the only option for paying their taxes. Taxpayers who have a
combination of income that is withheld on and other income not
subject to withholding, or retirees whose income consists of pension
payments and IRA withdrawals, can typically choose how to cover the tax liability on that other income. As usual, there are pros and
cons to each approach:
• By paying the tax on that additional income via estimated pay-
ments, the taxpayer can keep control of the income for a longer pe-
riod of time. They might earn the income in the beginning of the
year, but only make the estimated payments on each quarterly due
date. However, this requires the taxpayer to be aware of the deadlines and be sure to send their payments on time. It also means they
must be careful to set aside some of their income periodically to
cover the tax cost, rather than spending or reinvesting it.
22
• Depending on the amount of non-salary income, a taxpayer could
simply increase the withholding on their salary to cover the tax cost
of this other income. Doing so relieves the fear of missing the pay-
ment deadline, but also means the taxes may be paid perhaps
months before the estimated payment would be due.
Planning Around An Unexpected Increase In Income
For taxpayers whose income comes almost exclusively from wages
that are subject to withholding, their withholding is usually more
than enough to cover 90% of that year’s taxes. But what happens
when that taxpayer experiences an unusual increase in their income,
perhaps by realizing a large capital gain from an investment? In that
case, the taxpayer can often wait to pay the tax on that income until the April 15 due date for their tax return.
Special Consideration For 2018
The tax reform act passed in late 2017 (the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act) in-
cluded many significant changes that take effect in 2018 and will
impact all taxpayers. Taxpayers will want to take these changes into
account when planning their 2018 tax payments. Some of the more impactful changes included in this tax reform are:
• New limitations on many of the deductions taxpayers have claimed in the past.
• A new exclusion for income received from a pass-through business. • Significant changes that will limit the impact of the Alternative Minimum Tax.
• Lower tax rates applied to virtually all levels of income.
• Changes affecting families, including the repeal of the personal exemption along with the expansion of the existing child credits.

CAPE PETS
PEARL In September 2015, I was included in a raid of a puppy mill. We rescued 47 dogs that day.
One of them was Pearl. She was estimated to be 6 years old. She was in horrible condition, like all the other dogs we rescued that day. They had never been out of a cage, they had never experienced kind, loving human hands, they had rotten, infected teeth, most of which had to be removed.
The first time I held Pearl, she didn't want to let go. She was shaking with fear and yet the craving to be loved and held was stronger. It took a long time for her to trust. At first, she mostly laid in a bed, and, if I approached her, she would shudder and curl into a ball. After about a week, she seemed to relax a little.
Her friend, Ruby the Pomeranian, made her feel safe. Pearl watched as I gently held and petted Ruby, and eventually Pearl let me do the same with her. It wasn't until after about a month that she first played, like a real puppy. It was that moment, you could see it in her eyes, that she exhaled a sigh of relief for the first time.
Now, she's a total spitfire! She runs around and plays with the other dogs, barking and rolling around. She loves to be held and follows me everywhere. She loves belly rubs and loves to just be wherever I am. She is a true gem!
