Our Cover Artist Mark Herron

After moving to Cape Coral just a year ago last July, MR Herron has been up to his eyeballs in Cape Coral. A firm believer that we are the best kept secret in Florida, he’s been using his talents to promote our city any way he can. He’s a regular contributor to CapeStyle Magazine, creating memorable covers, charming cartoons, and of course, the infamous “Map-aPaloosa” of the South Cape business district. Most recently, he’s emerged (shhhh, don’t tell anyone) as The Cape Crusader, “On his quest for the Best Breakfast in Cape Coral.” He created “The Furballs” calendar for The Cape Coral Animal Shelter, as well as posters and ads for their big upcoming Golf Tournament in November. He whipped-up three posters for Red, White & Boom. His “Snowbirds” books and greeting cards can be found in quaint shops around town, and his portrait of “Christina” hangs in the Big Blue Restaurant. MR has developed several logos and ad campaigns for local businesses already. Local advertising agencies have also been tapping into his skills lately. He’s got more illustration styles than Carter’s got Little Liver Pills, so if you’re looking for a professional artist, with outside-the-box ideas, shoot him an email at mrherronstudios@comcast.net

Hometown Hero

ROSSREVALEE United States Marine Corps Ross Revalee is originally from Lafayette, IN, however he lived in California for 25 years after leaving the Marine Corps. He moved to Cape Coral last Christmas Eve.

He is the proud father of two amazing children, Michael (21) and Sarah (20.) Sarah followed her dad in to military service and is

currently serving in the US Navy in Norfolk, VA aboard the USS

Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. Ross also has a brother and two

sisters, along with his mother who still lives in Lafayette. Ross lost

his father in a car crash when he was 20 years old.

Ross served in the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1983. He spent most of his 6 years at MCAS El Toro in Irvine, CA. During that time, he was deployed to NAS Whidbey Island (WA,) NAS Fallon (NV) and

MCAS Yuma (AZ.) He also did three tours in Japan for a total of 2 years.

During his 2 years in Japan, Ross was able to visit mainland Japan

where he hiked and skied Mount Fuji. He also visited Okinawa, the Philippine Islands and Guam, along with Wake and Midway Islands.

The Marine Corps allowed Ross to do a lot that he would not have otherwise had the opportunity to do. He repelled out of helicopters

and off 250’ cliffs, zip lined with full combat gear, survived for two weeks in the jungle with just a canteen of water, repaired numerous

types of aircraft and, best of all, met people that are now friends for life.

Ross received several commendations and awards while in the Marines: Rifle Expert w/3rd award bar, Pistol Expert w/2nd award

bar, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with star, Good Conduct

Medal w/star and Naval Unit Commendation for the most accident free flight hours of any squadron.

He also received a Group

Commendation for leading the repair of an MD80 aircraft that was

damaged and was due to be shipped from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft.

After serving his country, Ross became a software developer.

Ross now works as an ISSA CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) and an

ACE GFI (Group Fitness Instructor.) He trains out of his own facility

here in South Cape (next to The Monkey Bar) or will even come to

your home. His company is REVolutionize Your Body.

His favorite thing to do since moving here is to enjoy our Florida

sunshine on a quiet beach. As long as there is water and sand, he is

happy! Ross loves to kayak, surf and boat. He’s also enjoyed getting

involved volunteering for the monthly SCHEA trolleys in South Cape.

He was a volunteer at the Funky Fashion Show and looks forward to

getting even more involved in his new community. Ross would love

to get involved with the Special Olympics either as a trainer or as a

sponsor.

Interesting tidbit about Ross: many years ago, he studied to be a

Pastor. While he learned that it was not his calling, he enjoys helping people, and he always roots for the underdog. Getting in to personal

training was where he feels God lead him to be. He started out as a

150 pound skinny smoker at 48 years old, and is now a physically fit

190 pound man at 58.

Karen and their four Shitzu dogs, have made themselves at home in the 2 years they have been here. They have been

busy exploring our beaches and watching those fascinating sunsets.

Lyn originally hails from Boston. As a kid, he sold newspapers

in and around Fenway Park. When I say “in,” I really mean

“IN” the stadium. Lyn was granted access to both the Home

and Visitors’ clubhouses during baseball season. When the Yankees came to town, Yogi Berra would even buy all of Lyn’s newspapers!

A career Air Force step-father led to Lyn living in Germany

and the U.K during his teenage years, even graduating from

High school in London, England in 1962. Lyn then joined the Marine Corps right after school, and, as a Crash Rescue

years in places like Paris Island, S.C., Camp Lejeune, S.C., NAS Pendleton, Iwakuni, Japan, Chu Lai, Vietnam, Quantico, Va.

He left active service as a Warrant Officer, WO1.

Lyn’s aviation experience and pilot’s license led to a job as a

co-pilot with the U.S. Air subsidiary Allegheny Airlines, but that wasn’t exciting enough for Lyn. So, in 1988, Lyn joined

the United States Information Agency as a photographer.

Photography had long been his biggest hobby. When the USIA

was disbanded in ’88, Lyn transferred to the State Department. In 2000, he was assigned to the White House where he photographed U.S. Presidents and heads of State,

along with lots of celebrities. When asked “who were some of the most interesting people you’ve photographed?” Lyn quickly replied, “The Clintons.”

CapeStyle Magazine│September 2017 CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

13

Lyn also worked with the Voice of America as a TV producer for President Reagan’s pet project, World Net TV. VOA sent him

around the world, and in the process Lyn became fluent in Japanese, as well as proficient in four other languages, including

Arabic. He’s received too many Distinguished Service awards to count, met numerous music celebrities who performed live

for VOA broadcasts (Kenny Rogers, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Gloria Loring, Roy Orbison, to name a few) and still served at the pleasure of five U.S. Presidents: Ronald Reagan, George Bush #1, Bill Clinton, George Bush #2 and Barack Obama.

While

all this was going on, Lyn and Karen also ran one of Washington, D.C.’s most popular and successful wedding photography businesses for 25 years!

Lyn keeps busy these days as a volunteer with CERT (Community Emergency Response Team.) When a disaster strikes, like last year’s tornado, CERT personnel are first on the scene evaluating the situation so that Police and Fire Department energies

are directed to whom and what needs the most help. CERT volunteers are proficient in first aid, CPR, and are trained in

emergency procedures. Lyn is also a volunteer member of the National Weather Service’s SKY WATCH team. He completed

an 8 week course in detecting weather anomalies and reports back to NWS Headquarters in Tampa. Lyn and Karen love to take pictures of those glorious

Southwest Florida sunrises and sunsets. While it may not be as exotic as the Dali Lama (yes, Lyn took his pictures

when he visited Washington, D.C.) or a head of state from,

say, Canada, or a Middle Eastern potentate, Lyn’s photos

of Southwest Florida can be seen if you’re lucky enough to be a friend on his Facebook page. Lyn says he loved his

job(s) and, why not? He’s met just about everybody that is somebody for the past 30 years, knows the White House inside and out (including scandals,) is retired, and now lives

in a gorgeous home on a canal in SW Cape Coral. And boy does he have stories to tell!

Managing Your Health with Exercise Need a reason to work out? Here are 7 to start and there are many more.

Submitted by Ross Revalee

Owner, Revolutionize Your Body

What if you could be thinner, healthier and

live a longer life? Sound too good to be true?

According to research, and my experience,

exercise is the solution for a better quality of life.

Physical activity is an essential part of any

weight-loss program, to maximize your fat

loss while keeping valuable muscle mass. But

exercise has many other health and longevity benefits. It can help prevent or improve these conditions:

Heart Disease

Regular activity strengthens your heart

muscle; lowers blood pressure; increases

"good" cholesterol (HDLs) and lowers "bad" cholesterol (LDLs); enhances blood flow; and

helps your heart function more efficiently. All

of these benefits reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

Stroke

In an analysis of 23 studies, researchers

found that being active reduces your risk of

having, and dying from, a stroke. According to a study published in the journal Stroke,

moderately active study participants had 20% less risk of stroke than less active

participants.

Type II Diabetes

This disease is increasing at alarming rates -

- by 62% since 1990 -- and 17 million

Americans now have it. Physical activity can

enhance weight loss and help prevent and/or

control this condition. Losing weight can increase insulin sensitivity, improve blood

sugar and cholesterol levels, and reduce

Wandering

Coffee In The Cape Story and Pictures by Stephanie Karasek Check out more of her adventures at: www.thewaytowander.com

Did you know that coffee is the most popular beverage in the world? Or that over 2 billion cups are consumed every day worldwide, with 600 million of those in the USA?

How do you like your coffee? I like mine iced with a hint of hazelnut. Other days require a hot shot of espresso. Fortunately, Cape Coral has plenty of choices when it comes to coffee. Here are a few of my favorites.......

Fun Fact Coffee sacks are usually made of hemp and weigh approximately 132 pounds when they are full of green coffee beans. It takes over 600,000 beans to fill a coffee sack.

Tony and Ada’s is located at 2110 Chiquita Blvd South, in the

heart of Fellowship Park at Cape Christian Fellowship. Tony and

Ada’s is named after an amazing couple who helped found Cape

Christian over 30 years ago. Their love of God and people created

a feeling of belonging that you can still feel today. The coffee

I indulged in one of the most amazing cinnamon rolls that I’ve

Besides the pleasant aroma, coffee is actually good for you.

1. Improves your mood and you are less likely to suffer from depression

2. Lowers risk of getting type 2 diabetes 3. Protects against cirrhosis and cancer of the liver

4. Coffee drinkers have less risk of heart disease

Fun Fact Cowboy Coffee originated from Cowboys using dirty socks out on the trail as coffee filters. They filled the sock with coffee beans, immersed the sock in boiling water then squeezed the coffee into cups.

Java D’oro

Java D’oro has been roasting gourmet coffee for SW Florida’s best coffee shops,

restaurants and cafés, as well as private residents who appreciate fresh coffee beans, for 20 years. The coffee roaster serves wholesale, retail and mail order

customers throughout the country and provides private label for distributors. The owner, Tony Latassa, shares the most important coffee attribute, freshness.

“Two weeks after the coffee has been roasted, it has lost most of its properties

and can no longer be called gourmet. It becomes just another coffee on a supermarket shelf, no matter how good it was when it was roasted.” That is

why Java D’oro roasts to order and delivers the next day. Java D’oro is located at 905 SE 14th Pl.
