Ladies First: We showcase the achievemenets of 7 pioneering women TAKE A LOOK OF SOME OF THESE INVENTIONS WHICH FEW KNEW WERE CREATED BY WOMEN.

Mary Anderson: The Windshield Wiper 1903 in the early 1900s if it was raining or snowing, drivers had to stop every few blocks to wipe their windshields?! Mary Anderson solved that. Although cars were rare at the time, Anderson took a notice to the situation and by 1903 she invented the wipers. It was the ingenious squeegee on a spindle attached to a handle inside the car. All the driver had to do to clear the windshield was pull down on a handle.

Josephine Cochrane: The Dishwasher: 1886

Out of frustration, Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher. She’d been angry that hired domestic help continually broke and chipped her fine china. Cochrane’s dishwasher used high water pressure aimed at a wire rack of dishes, she received a patent for it in 1886. During this era, most houses didn’t have the technology of a hot water system to run such a machine, but Cochrane persisted and sold her idea to hotels and restaurants. Eventually dishwashers moved into households as more and more women entered the workplace.

Grace Hopper: BM-Harvard Mark 1

Stephanie Kwolek: Bullet Proof Vests 1963 Out of frustration, Josephine Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar, a tough durable material now used to make bulletproof vests. For years she’d worked on the process at DuPont and in 1963, she got the polymers or rod-like molecules in fibers to line up in one direction. This made the material stronger than others, where molecules were arranged in bundles. In fact, the new material was as strong as steel! Kwolek’s technology also went on to be used for making suspension bridge cables, helmets, brake pads, skis, and camping gear.

Alice H. Parker: The Gas Heating Furnance 1919 Parker was an African-American inventor who in 1919, filed the first U.S. patent for the precursor to a central heating system. The system was able to regulate the temperature of a building and carry heat from room to room. The drawings included for the patent show a heating furnace powered by gas. An entire house required several heating units, each controlled by individual hot air ducts. The ducts directed heat to different parts of a building structure. Many people now no longer needed to chop or buy wood and coal to stay warm. There’s not much more known about Parker’s life, but her invention of the heating furnace has revolutionized how we live today.

Admiral Dr. Grace Murray Hopper is known as the “mother of computers”! After WWII, Hopper was stationed at Harvard, where she worked on the development of the IBMHarvard Mark 1, the first large-scale computer in the U.S. Dr. Hopper also invented the compiler, which translates written language into computer code. She coined the term “bug” for a computer problem, and co-developed COBOL, the first user-friendly business computer software program.

Mary Phelps Jacob: The Modern Brassiere 1914

Jacobs was awarded a US patent in 1914 for a Brassiere that supported the breasts up from the shoulders and separated them into two individual shapes. People had experimented with making Brassieres before, but it was the idea of “separating the breasts,” that made her design unique. Jacobs was awarded a US patent in 1914 for a Brassiere that supported the breasts up from the shoulders and separated them into two individual shapes.

Patricia Bath, M.D.: Laser Cataract Surgery Device 1988 She’s the first African-American female doctor to patent in 1988, a new method of removing cataracts. The medical laser instrument made the procedure more accurate and is termed the cataract Laserphacoprobe. Dr. Bath was also the first Black Female Surgeon appointed to UCLA in 1975. As a laser scientist and inventor, she has 5 patents on the laser cataract surgery device covering the United States, Canada, Japan, and Europe.

For many us, the idea of striking out on your own and being a captain of industry is merely a pipe dream. But one man was determined to turn his dream of being a successful entrepreneur into a reality at a very early age. 24/7Livelistings.com caught up with award winning Goldgenie CEO and founder Laban Roomes who tells us about his amazing life journey so far, how the loss of a friend had a defining impact on his life and his plans to invest in young people who want to follow in his footsteps. by Michelle Martin

“It all started for me when I was a child I was bought up in, Leytonstone and at that time it was quite an affluent area. My mum was a single parent working 3 jobs and she simply couldn’t afford to buy me the clothes and stuff that I wanted to have. I was the only black boy in my class and the white kids were very middle class, wearing designer labels, they had all the latest gadgets and they went on holidays at least three times a year. I remember thinking to myself this is exactly how I want to live. By the time I got to 11, I realised that mum needed help to pay the bills and that when my business acumen really kicked in. One day some travellers knocked on the door and asked if we wanted our hedge trimmed, I realised that I could do that and it could be a great way to make money, so me and a few friends set up our own hedge cutting business. We spent evenings and weekends cutting hedges and trimming lawns and in no time we were doing this for customers across the whole borough of Waltham Forest. Our business really took off and that success gave me a real desire to start out my own. In my late teens I decided set up an export company, which involved me shipping Lada cars from the UK to Jamaica to sell on the Island. I relocated and by the time I was 19 the business was doing extremely well, so much so, that I was able to pay off my mum’s mortgage and by the age of 20 buy a brand new BMW outright. But shortly afterwards my circumstances changed and the business collapsed. I was forced to return to the UK with just £80 in my pocket.

24/7Live Meets Laban Roomes: The Man Behind GOLDgenie.com

At that point I was homeless, broke and sleeping on a friends floor. But I still had the desire to start a new business venture and during that time the idea for Goldgenie came about. In America gold plating is big business and I always had a dream to bring that concept to the UK and make it big over here.

I borrowed £1600 pounds from an ex girlfriend to formulate a prototype for a gold plating machine, it’s a prototype which l still use to this day. To get the business off the ground, I was doing door-to-door sales and the bulk of my clients were body piercing jewellers and tattoo parlours. But In the back of my mind I always wanted more. My dream was to work with Lexus. I wrote countless letters to the company explaining who I was and what I wanted to do with their car emblems and accessories, I made a lot of phone calls but no one got back to me. That’s when I decided to go down there in person. I got a taxi and headed straight down to the then main Lexus dealership in London’s Barbican. I walked up to the manager, introduced myself and explained my product to him, Intrigued, he [the manager], asked me to demonstrate how worked. So I gold plated a Lexus car badge and some accessories on the site. Luckily for me Lexus were were holding a training day for managers at

Celebrity client, Victoria Beckham that particular dealership and on the spot 4 other managers, signed me up straight away. Word got around and soon I was commissioned to work for all of 52 Lexus franchises dealerships across the UK. I was working alone, driving up and down the country, waking up at 4 am to get to places like Manchester, Derby and Birmingham as I thought that me being the face of the business was an integral part of the sale. But one day on the way to Bristol my van blew up, I had a brand new Vauxhall Astra van and in a year I clocked 100,000 miles. I thought to myself this is not right, I had got to the stage where I had put so much into the business, that I was neglecting myself.

world to gold plate a phone and the first person ever to gold plate the Nokia 8800. I then started to offer a bespoke gold plating service on mobile phones ipads and iPods From then on things really started to blow up and because of our strong online presence I was contacted by the organisers of the American Emmy Awards who commissioned me to gold plate 55 phones for the award winners. That year Denzel Washington and Helen Mirren had been nominated. They flew me out on the Monday and the awards were taking place on the Friday, I had two days to have them ready and post them back to the organisers.

I decided then to set up an online and postal service for the plating business. And that’s how goldgenie.com was born.

But there was no way I was taking that risk, so I decided to deliver them personally and hand them over to the nominees. That was an amazing experience.

I then moved onto mobile phones and became the first person in the

Dragon’s Den followed shortly afterwards. Twice before I had been

invited to appear on the show but each time the car came to pick me up I always felt that I wasn’t ready, but by the third time, a series of life changing events forced my hand.

The exposure and backing really worked, I won more investment and I had companies like Harrods and Selfridges willing to work with me once they realised that I was a serious contender.

I had a falling out with a close friend of mine named Mark Mackenzie. We had had a silly argument that resulted in us not speaking for 6 months, in that time another friend of mine died and at that funeral I realised that life was too short and that it was time for us to reconcile.

After while word started to spread and I started to amass quite a few celebrity clients, Amy Winehouse, David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John and David Furnish, Kate Moss and Cheryl Cole, just to name a few. I have a great team of people working for me and the business has really flourished with a lot of custom generating from Europe, the Middle East and Russia and we have started to offer franchises.

So the next day I went to his house and there was wreath at his door, he had been killed the day before. I was devastated. I’d lost two very good friends within 6 months. Mark’s death taught me some valuable lessons, firstly never let the sun go down on an argument and never let fear hold you back from believing in you dream. Mark was a very talented guy, an amazing character, he could sing, write and act, and he was extremely good looking. But he was scared to follow his dream. He would’ve been a star but fear held him back. It made me realise that fear holds us back from pursuing our dreams. If we learnt to let go of our fears, so many people would accomplish so much more in life. So I went on the show with a completely different mind-set and celebrity entrepreneur James Caan believed in the product and Invested in the business.

An accomplished songwriter, The West Coast native first came to the publics attention in ‘95 with the now classic track, They Don’t Know, he then went on to give us some of the biggest and best music of the 90’s that helped define an era including Don’t Talk, Pretty Girl and Are you Still Down. by Michelle Martin 247Livelistings.com caught up with the multi talented and ever so gracious Jon B ahead of his eagerly anticipated live show in London and during our lively translantic call, the singer spoke about his love for the UK, working with Iconic rapper Tupac Shakur and plans to get more release more music later this year.

one sort of style or category of music, I’m bouncing around trying a lot of different things. I’ve made some hits in a lot of different genres, I’m not just a ballads type of singer, I also have club joints. I and I continue to be innovative as the years go by. I mean I was one of the first r&b artists that sided with hip-

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU ON THE NIGHT? I usually do a variety of songs from all of the albums that I have put out over the years. I’ve been putting records outs since 1995, so its quite a selection of music. I try to touch on a little bit of everything. I just like to put on a heart and soul performance. I am very passionate about music and that’s what imp trying to convey in the time that I have stage. I HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN YOU BEFORE AT LONDON’S JAZZ CAFÉ AND IT WAS A BRILLIANT SHOW. Thank you so much, those shows, [at the Jazz Café], are always very dear for me because it’s such a great crowd and it’s very intimate. WHEN IT COMES TO LIVE SHOWS DO YOUR FANS REACT DIFFERENTLY IN THE UK TO THOSE BACK HOME IN THE STATES? I think its same, if you want what I bring then you are going to get into it. I am very intuitive to when the people are having a good time it doesn’t always have to take someone hollering, snapping their fingers, clapping their hands and jumping up and down to appreciate my music. Sometimes people are more reserved and we are fine with that. But they all have a similar energy because its love you know that’s international you know that’s universal.

JON B

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE UK? I think that the UK has a diverse, eclectic, interest in music and I love that, because for me that’s who I am and that’s the type of music that I represent. That’s why people get me out here in the UK, they see that I’m not just an artist that you can box in

Jon B was the last artist to make music with Hip Hop legend, 2pac

THE ROMANS DO AND EAT ENGLISH FOOD? Well I tell you this I’ve had some if the best African food that I have ever had. It was a place in south London like a little hole in the wall restaurant, which served amazing food, I had the oxtail soup, and I had all types of different foods. It was Nigerian food. Amazing. The spices and all that. You know there is always really good curry everywhere I go and I love a place out there that y’all go to called Nando’s I THINK EVERY AMERICAN THAT COMES TO THE UK FALLS IN LOVE WITH NANDOS! Nando’s is serious man that place is no joke that is almost like if you went to Jamaica and they made you Jerk Chicken! So what does the future hold for Jon B. Well definitely more music, this album I’m working is going to come out soon, I don’t really want to put a time frame on it but I’m really trying to put this next album out differently than I’ve done before. Other than that, collaborations with other artists and a lot more on the production side. I put out two albums over the last two years under my own label. One is called Comfortable Swag and the other is called b Side Collection. I really wanted to do that for the first time independently. Because creatively nothing’s changed and I’m still doing my thing. hop right along side with what I was doing. In the 90’s the union was really popular and being linked to hip hop was a priority for me to show that other areas of music like dancehall music and reggae music the universal - ness of being a soulful guy and gravitating to all things that are soulful WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH TUPAC? Tupac is an immortal legend. To think back to what that opportunity represents to me is surreal and I am very honoured to have had that happen to me and to be a part of that legacy and to also carry the torch in memory of Tupac with the song like Are You still Down. It was one of the last songs if not the last song that he recorded, so for me to be on there with him and to have that reaction that we had in the studio, its an amazing thing to be a part of. ARE THERE ANY UK ARTISTS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH AT THE MOMENT? Ah yeah there is a million UK artists that I would love to work with at the moment (laughing), par-

ticularly right now my favourite is Disclosure. They are amazing I love their album, I would love to produce some music for Sam Smith, I can relate to his vibe and his soul he is passion for music and he brings a lot of vintage elements that I can relate to. A lot of British artists are bringing that raw soul and I love that. But im a kid that grew up on Sade and Sting. British music influenced me greatly. So who inspires you, who or what is the one thing that makes you get up in the morning and write all those classic tracks that you’re writing that we all love. (laughing), I grew up on a lot of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions and Babyface productions. Growing up in high school I was listening to groups like New Edition, Alexander O’Neal, Karyn White and Johnny Gill, Babyface, and older classic artists like Luther Vandross, Donnie Hathway and Marvin Gaye, that’s the music listened to on the way to high school and that’s the music I learned from. WHEN YOU ARE IN THE UK DO YOU DO AS

24/7 Recommends...

singing to all summer long whilst hanging out with friends and chilling. This track is sure to do well once its released as it has the commerical appeal which everyone will like. Rating: 3.5/5

ED SHEERAN- SING (2 JUNE) The Lego House singer, Ed Sheeran is back with his latest offering Sing taken from his new album Multiply The track itself is an unbent pop/ RnB influenced track, demonstrating the vocal ability of Sheeran. Production wise the song is greatas it is an easy listen. Like most of Sheeran’s song, this one is catchy with its a appealing chorus and instrumentals throughout the track., in particular the guitar rifts. The song was inspired by Justin Timberlake- and you can definitely see the influences from him on the song-which in fact is a good thing, but still manage to have his on flare on it. The song will do well as it is fresh and very current, and has attitude. Rating: 4/5

KATY PERRY- BIRTHDAY (2 JUNE) Birthday is an up- beat happy feel good song- from the Roar singer, Perry. Katy is one of those very few pop artist whos seem to make infecticious and catchy songs which are far from cheesey. It’s a track you will find yourself

TINIE TEMPAH- 5 MINUTES (2 JUNE) The Pass Out singers latest offering is the track 5 Minutes. The urban-rock inspired track is very much the usual kind of song you would expect from the Yeah artist. The song has a rocky edge to it, 5 Minutes is not one of Tinies best songs, I suspect that this latest offering from Tempah may not be as big a hit as some of his previous songs, but does have potential to at least be a top 10 hit. Rating: 3.5/5

Rating: 3.5/5

LIL WAYNE FT DRAKE - BELEIVE (16 JUNE) Believe Me is the latest offering from the Lollipop rapper, lil Wayne guest featuring Drizzy Drake on the track. The track itself is a typical Hip Hop track- this song if particular definitely does not lack attitude and boldness. The rap flows from either artists are good, but neither of them really outreach their lyrical capabilities on the track. Believe Me is the kind of track you you will probably hear in the club on nodding you head to driving around in your car on a summers evenin chillin to.

USHER- GOOD KISSER (JUNE 23) The latest offering from the Burn singer, Usher Raymond is the seductive track Good kisser. The song itself has an old school vibe to it but manages to still remain modern and current. This track only demonstrates what a great RnB singer Usher is. The track itself is a sexy, smoothe and very much slick, and demonstrates what a good RnB track should sound like having soul and funk at its core. Ratiing 4/5

Rating: 3/5

EXAMPLE- ONE MORE DAY (STAY WITH ME) One More Day, is the new release from the, Changed the Way You Kiss Me Singer. The track is definitely a club banger, its catchy has a good beat and vocals or complimented on this track. The production on the song on the track is very light making it easy listening. The general appeal is the pulsating beat and catchy chorus lines. I’m pretty sure the song will do well once its releases it has an all round chiiled out party feel to it. Rating: 4/5

TREY SONGZ- CHANGE YOUR MIND (23 JUNE) It would seem that last year has been quite a good year for Trigga Trey as hes also known. Change Your Mind is Songz latest song from his forthcoming album; Trigga. The track is reminiscent of what we would normally here from Songz. The vocals on the track do not demonstrate the vocal ability of the the US singer, but to be fair it is not the type of track which is vocally challenging. The track on a whole is catchy, the intrumentals especially with the drum beat and snares make the track feel very upbeat and happy.

BEYONCE- PRETTY HURTS (23 JUNE) If you have not heard this track being played over the last few months, especially for promos in particular where have you been? Queen B’s latest track is Pretty Hurts. Finally set for release as a single, the song is a beautiful and honest song about self image and self worth. The tracks has stunning vocals from Beyonce, who nevers seems to disappoint- she is undoubtedly a veteran at her craft and always manages to captivate an audience with her voice. The song is definitely uplifting and is the kind of song to pick you up and change your overall mood. The track is detined for chart success- what this space. Rating: 4/5

EMINEM- HEADLIGHTS (30 JUNE) Headlights is taken from Eminems eighth studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 released last year. The track is an apologetic confession to the mother of the controversial rapper- in which he apologises to his mum for all his wrong doings including cursing her out and airing out their dirty laundry so to speak. The rapping on the track is usual Eminem, but you can feel the sadness and sincerity in when he raps. The simple beat works well along with the guest vocals from Nate Ruess, who gives it some mucn needed depth. Rating: 3.5/5

JASON DERULO FT SNOOP DOGG- WIGGLE (30 JUNE) The Trumpets singer Derulos latest track is the provocative track Wiggle featuring Snoop Dogg. I must admit I did not think I would like this song upon first hearing it Wiggle is a party track and has all the elements to make you just want to move your body. Having Snoop only makes the track better than what it already is. Im sure its set to do well in the clubs as well as the charts. Rating:3.5/5

*NEW MUSIC*

ROUGH COPY- STREET LOVE (30 JUNE)

Having been ejected from the XFactor tour this year, the three piece RnB trio from Croydon are set to release their debut single Sweet Love. Covering the classic by Soul singer Anita Baker, Rough Copy have come up with their own interpretation of the hit. As a debut single the track comes accross very flat even down to the vocals whereby they result to using autotune- really guys? I would have expected something stronger especially as a debut single. The production on the track is very weak. I almost felt akward listening to vocals as it does not fit well with the overall sound of the track. Creativity is definitely lacking on the track- which is a shame as I know these guys are talented. I just hope their forthcoming single is much stronger vocally and in sound. Rating: 2.5/5

24/7FEATURE MANGOSEED

by Gavin Peters

IF YOU WAS TO HEAR THE WORD MANGOSEED, INITIALLY WHAT DO YOU THINK OF. NO, ITS NOT SOME TROPICAL FRUIT, NOR IS IT A FOOD. MANGOSEED ARE AN UP AND COMING GROUP WHO DESCRIBE THEMSELVES AS A WORLD FUSION BAND TO PUT IT SIMPLY. THE MULTICULTURAL BAND HAVE COMBINED DIFFERENT CULTURES OF MUSIC AND HAVE INTERTWINED THEM TO CREATE A FUSION OF GREAT MUSIC. 24/7 LIVE CAUGHT UP WITH THE FOURSOME ON THEIR BUSY SCHEDULE AND HERE IS WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BAND AND HOW YOU FORMED? Mangoseed are; Nichlolai La Barrie , Lead vocals, Karlos Coleman, Guitras, Richard Hardy, Bass, Sam Campbell , Drums. NLB: Karlos and myself worked togeather and we started sharing music, then we started jamming with some musicians and then decided to play some gigs , we were looking for a bass player and friend of mine introduced me to Richard at a party , the same thing happened with Sam, we were looking for a drummer and a friend introduced us all. The fisrt time Sam played with us it was over, he was the drummer. RH: ... a mutual friend Kiwan knew of me from some time i had spent in Trinidad and told Nico about me

when He was looking for a bassist.... Sam came on a spaceship from a far away planet called Ireland KC: Nico and myself used to work in the same place and realised we both wrote songs and made music. We begun collaborating. It wasn’t long before we decided to take it out of the house and pulled in musicians to get a live set together. Richard came on board when a mutual friend told him we were looking for new bassist the same went for our drummer Sam. YOU HAVE SPOKEN HOW YOU TAKE A LOT OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES FROM JEANMICHEL BASQUIAT, WHAT IS IT ABOUT HIM YOU ALL ADMIRE ? NLB: i think we make songs like he made paintings , he used whatever he wanted to , to say how he felt in that moment and he didn’t care what people would

think of the work, and it was also this marriage of what was happing on the streets and what was happening in the banks and in the govenment and wider society. We use all of those things to make songs we use the old stuff that we really loved and new stuff as well in terms of trying out ideas and trying make a new sound.

zette” from Trinidad , who are mixing up the Port-Of-Spain sound with some blusey rock, “Kin Sibling Rivalry” with their punk infused reggae and the DJ duo “Jus Now” bringing drum and bass to the Caribbean vibes. All of these groups ourselves included are trying to find the next natural evolution of that Caribbean flavor and all of us come up with something slightly different.

So looking at how he made his work and what the end product looked like we tried to apply that to a whole bit of work so when you listen to the whole record , you get this sense that is coming form loads of differnt places , but we have also sampled ourselves on later tracks so you get that there is cohernace in it think. As you listen it adds up hopefully. Just like he would repeat ideas in a little corner of canvas we tried to do the same thing.

THE FUSION BETWEEN ROCK AND FUNK AND REGGAE ARE OBVIOUSLY PRESENT IN YOUR MUSICAL SOUND- WHICH I THINK WORKS VERY WELL. HOW DO YOU AS A BAND MAKE ALL THESE FUSIONS OF SOUNDS WORK? NLB: I think its a really organic process , in terms of the song writing we are always playing around with ideas and bring things into the rehaersal room but there is a point when a song feels like it wants to go in a certain direction and we dont block that we just let it go where it feels right, not matter really where that maybe. its alot about trust and also about not being precious with it, and letting the ideas run where they want too. So we end up going throught loads of differnt ideas and then what seems like the song emergs , then we leave it for a while and when we play it again , we all collectivley hate it and start all over.

KC: Mangoseed just make music, sounds by piecing together elements from everywhere. This could be tablas from India, dub bass from Jamaica a cracking snare from hip hop America. This merging of difference creates it’s own non specific vision. We thought what black modern icon has achieved that and is recognised for who they are without being compared to those before them and that is Basquiat. RH: It made us want to come out fighting with a strong sense of independence from the get go. To absorb the artistic world that we had seen put it in a blender and spit it out with all the force and energy of a man possessed. It also made us all collectivly decide that we wanted to make something brash and revolutionary.

RH: Back when we wrote standing on high we had a talk and all of us agreed that the songs themselves once we had started them have a kind of life of their own and we should let them find the sounds and styles that seem right. A very regular phrase that you would here in the Mangoseed band room is “Is that right?” and this question is asked not to find out if everything is musically “right” but if we all feel the song is speaking with a voice that we have come to know as our own.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OVERALL SOUND, AND WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT IT IN YOUR OPINION? NLB: I think cause we have no defined sound and it can go anywhere. There are things that we all really love playing so its stuff that we will always come back

YOUR MUSIC IS VERY MELODIC AND INSTRUMENTAL- DO YOU ALL PLAY INSTRUMENTS AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO YOU TO USE INSTRUMENTS AS OPPOSE MUSICALLY PRODUCED SOUNDS? KC: All instruments are played by the band. In some cases people have thought there has been a synth or a keyboard

comes from expermenting of finding a sample that we like and then taking it apart and trying to make that happen live. All the album is played live and then we added enhancements when we were mixing but what you hear is 4 of us in a room playing our hearts out. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOU APART FROM A LOT OF OTHER BANDS NOW- AND HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT? KC: We are more interested in putting on a good show, this means our set and the pace are carefully constructed to take our audience with us on a journey. We use the same mind set when making songs and are not afraid to smudge boundaries between genres. RH: Every band that I know of that has taken the route of trying to progress beyond the limitations of one genre has always managed to come up with a different sound. Take Skindred and Sublime, two what it wants to feell like and where we might record it and how. We have some songs and some ideas that need to be fleshed out and i think as we tour and play they will start getting more and more solid.

But the plan is play live as much as we can for the rest of the year and the take a break maybe and start working on some new stuff in 2015. ANY LAST WORDS: RH: Stay positive and help create a world our childrens’ children can be proud to live in.

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE CHARACTER OF PAUL TRUEMAN WAS ONLY IN EASTENDERS FOR 3 YEARS. WHEN HE FIRST ARRIVED IN ALBERT SQUARE WAY BACK IN 2001, THE LOVEABLE ROGUE WAS AN IMMEDIATE HIT WITH FANS AND IT WAS ASSUMED THAT HIS CHARACTER WAS GOING TO BE A PERMANENT FIXTURE ON THE SHOW. But by 2004 fans were left reeling at his decision to quit with many at the time angry with the writers for killing his character off, but for actor Gary Beadle his time on the soap was a great experience that just added to his very impressive acting resume. A career that spans over 30 years with stints on some of the countries best love sit coms and drama’s including Absolutely Fabulous, Holby City and The Bill. Speaking exclusively to 24/7Livelistings.com the very friendly actor tells us how it all started, working his inspirational brother, his latest projects and winning a role in Hollywood Director Ron Howard’s latest blockbuster movie. SO GARY, TELL 24/7LIVELISTINGS.COM HOW IT ALL STARTED? It’s a crazy story, my brother is a playwright and director, (his brother is award winning play write Ricky Beadle Blair), and he is the genius of our family and one of my biggest inspirations. When we were young he really loved the movie Bugsy Malone. So he decided to put on a play of the film. We lived on a council estate in Bermondsey, South London) and he decided to use all the kids off the estate in the play.

24/7 MEETS...

Gary Beadle

Ricky was and always has been a he great organiser, hard worker and writeaholic, he put together a stage version of the film and bought the soundtrack on Vinyl used that as a musical backdrop for the play and we were just acting miming to the songs on the record that was connect to it. He charged all the local residents to come and see it was a big for something and us like out of the film the Full Monty. My brother didn’t stop there he also invited the top film director Alan Parker. In those days everybody’s name was in the phone book so he went through every single Alan Parker that was in the phone book in London and eventually found him and invited him down to come and see the play but Alan Parker couldn’t make it, so he sent his assistant down instead. She came and she absolutely loved and she fell in love with me, my brother and my sister and my brother was about 12 at the time, I was about 8 and my sister was about 4. She got us fast

tracked into the Anna Scher drama school and which at that time had a waiting list of about 4 years. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG ACTING BREAK? My first big break was a play called Playing Away with myself, former Eastenders star Ross Kemp and Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey, it was basically a play about a Brixton cricket team that played a white west country cricket team in aid of third world famine so you know it was quite patronizing really! TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT THEATRE RUN? I’ve just finished a one man play called The Room in the Elephant, it was written by a guy called Tom Wainright it’s a play based on a true story about a homeless guy who used to live in an abandoned water tank, he furnished it with carpets and a stove and even installed CCTV. The famous street artist Banksy was in LA and had heard about it so he came down stencilled the words this looks a bit like an Elephant on the side of it. After that the world’s press descended on him and wanted to know all about Banksy, what Banksy looked like. And then the authority confiscated the tank because they valued it as an expensive piece of art. I play that guy, it’s a very good play about an hour long and it sold out everywhere. We did the Arcola theatre in London, Bristol and Cardiff and I did it before at the Edinburgh festival as well. SO HAVE YOU GOT ANY OTHER ACTING ROLES LINED UP? Yes I do, I’m in a new comedy series called The Interceptor on the BBC that will be aired just before Christmas. I can’t say too much about other than I play a dodgy character it’s a cross between Luther and Hustle. I have just finished a film with Ron Howard, its called In the Heart of the Sea. Basically it’s the original story that inspired the Moby Dick and these guys get lost at sea and are trapped on a

over 10 years, its something I am so I grateful for. SO DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO DO ANY WRITING OR DIRECTING ANY FILMS YOURSELF? You know what that is the place I want to get to. I’ve written stuff before some shorts and stuff, but I’ve always had ambitions to direct because I do have like a visual eye on how I would like to shoot something and certainly with a style of my own, its all about the right project, the right people and the right time. But yeah I will one day be directing. WHAT’S THE BEST AND WORST THING ABOUT BEING AN ACTOR? Its really funny because I think the best part of acting is doing something that you want to do and getting paid for it but its not really about the money its all about the creativity and the inspiration. But I’d say the worst part not being in work. But

boat and they are starving there is a bit of cannibalism and all that. I had to lose a load of weight for the part, I lost about nearly three stone in weight and that’s due out in 2015. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH RON HOWARD? Amazing. It made me up my game in the sense of like preparation for a character. He asked me to do a lot of research on my character I play a cook on the ship that was also like a spiritual guide, a Baptist. I had to learn a lot of scriptures from the 1850’s and prayers for all occasions so I would have to know one straight away. But he was great to work with he was amazing, he is a powerful force in Hollywood and it was a privilege and an honour. IF YOU WASN’T ACTING WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING NOW? I would most probably have been a lawyer representing people and get paid for lying! THERE IS NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAWYERS AND ACTORS REALLY? So they tell me I mean I’ve never really been in trouble but I watched a few of those court room things on TV and I would’ve loved to have done

something like that. DO YOU STILL WATCH EASTENDERS? I am a huge fan, I haven’t had so much time recently but I’ve always been a huge fan of the show and I am a huge fan of Coronation Street. Yeah when I’m around and they are on absolutely. HERE AT 24/7LIVELISTINGS.COM WE LOVED THE CHARACTER OF PAUL TRUEMAN AND ESPECIALLY HOW YOU PLAYED HIM IN EASTENDERS IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG WHILE THERE WAS A BLACK CHARACTER WHO, PEOPLE REALLY LOVED GOT ATTACHED TO. I am so grateful to have been able to play such a great character like Paul Trueman. There some good writers and directors on that show and they make a great team. They really went out of their way to try making a successful black family that had all elements you know it had good and bad. I loved it, I really did. But like with everything, good things always have come to an end and I wanted to do other things. But I like to look back on it and think I did the character justice. It so funny when you meet people just ordinary every day people and they remember you and it been

the best piece of advice I can give is if you can make rejection, depression, long term unemployment your friend, if you can get on with all of those man you got the seeds to being a great artist in whatever for because it is all about because 9 times out of ten you cant get what you want and you are always working to the kind of big build up. Surround yourself with people that you have something in common with, never give up, don’t let any one ever put you off and believe in your dream. FINALLY TELL ME SOMETHING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT GARY BEADLE? I have a burning desire to live in France learn French and break into French films and that is the truth!

The Monthly Round UP

Ok so I have been playing a lot of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) and PlayStation 4 (PS4) this month and hoping between games. The main PS4 game for me this month has been Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes (MGSV:GZ) followed by my second play through of Infamous Second Son, MGSV:GZ has had some controversy because of the price which is around £25 and the main campaign being fairly short. Its fair to say that this is all quite true but (yes there is always a large round curvaceous butt...) there is so much content to play through and mess around with, you can easily get fifteen hours worth of enjoyment so to me the price was easily worth it and yes I

am a fan of the franchise so my point of view might be more positive than other peoples. I had to play Infamous again to choose all the bad or evil choices and to get the evil ending, to be honest I felt the evil powers

wasn’t quite as destructive as I would’ve liked but I still had a tremendous time wreaking havoc in Seattle. Right on to the PS Vita, I must of put some serious game time in on my commutes to and from work because I managed to play and complete three games in about six weeks. First up was Toukiden which is similar in game play to Capcoms monster hunter series and mixes it with Dynasty Warriors, Toukiden looks fantastic with some

Right on to the PS Vita, I must of put some serious game time in on my commutes to and from work because I managed to play and complete three games in about six weeks. First up was Toukiden which is similar in game play to Capcoms monster hunter series and mixes it with Dynasty Warriors, Toukiden looks fantastic with some crazy and outlandish looking demons to hunt down and slay. The only negative for Toukiden for me was the lack of enemy diversity as they brought back boss types but with slightly bigger claws or different colour palettes, Toukiden is a must buy if you’re into hunting games.

The second PS Vita game I finished was an “Indie” (independent game developed by a small group of individuals) called SteamWorld Dig which is a procedurally generated mining game where you control a upgradeable robot digging down for jewels, rare stones and secret levels. The enemies can be dealt with in all manor of different ways depending on your equipment. SteamWorld Dig has that one more go factor which is why you can complete it in around six hours, SteamWorld Dig is also cross buy for

PS4 as well, so for a few pounds it’s well worth the price. The final game I got to grips with on my PS Vita was an action RPG (role playing game) called Y’s: Memories of Celceta, this was probably my favourite game I played this month. Y’s (pronounced “eves” not “wise”) is a deep game which you would expect from a RPG but what you

might not have expected is that the action or fighting is quite technical and tactical too, the amount of items and upgradeable weapons on offer here are enough to please the most snooty of RPG gamers. The Campaign is bloody long which is a positive and the boss encounters are a treat. There is also a new game plus and boss rush time attack modes once you complete the campaign mode.

Born ADDICTION

Nick Newman’s HTM Flyknits Recently I had a nice relaxing trip to Borneo and whilst away I had pretty much zero temptation in relation to my sneaker addiction. There were no trainer shops, I was ignoring the mail outs from the multitude of stores I subscribe to and I had no eBay auctions, that I was bidding on. I even tried my best to not look at my Instagram feed (which is full of sneaker accounts) too much. Without the temptations, my mind wandered to other trainer thoughts. I started thinking about what made me get in to the game and I started thinking about some of my peers and what turned them into crep heads too? In a break from the norm, I thought I’d approach some fellow sneaker pimps and see what they are all about. Some are long-time friends of mine, some are sneaker collectors I admire from afar but all have their own unique tale to tell as to why they rock what they rock and stack what they stack. Hopefully regular readers of my articles will recognise certain traits within these words and may be a collector in their own right or may well be on the path to sneaker greatness? First up I caught up with Nick Newman, a collector and sneaker blogger (read Nick’s blog at http://nickair75wordpresscom.wordpress. com) that has been working in sports retail since 1993 when he first worked for Lillywhites.

Dan Keating’s Nike 180 uNIONS Fast forward a few years and Nick ends up working at legendary sneaker spot Sports And Things in Streatham. This place was rumoured to have a stockroom full to the brim of holy grails. It’s now a Sports Direct, but time spent at Sports And Things started Nick on a snowball effect that amassed him a 400 pair strong collection at its peak. Nick’s first trainer memory goes all the back to 1989 when he got his feet in a pair of Nike Air Pegasus. A few 60

years later and he was a proud owner of his first pair of AJs courtesy of his brother, after a trip to NYC. The collection has shrunk a little since, but today Nick’s HTM Flyknits, which are one of only a hundred pairs, sit pride of place amongst a collection that most of us would salivate over…..not literally mind you. Next up was Dan Keating, a longtime friend from the clubbing scene and a man responsible for bringing niche brands Creative Recreation and now high end brand Filling Pieces (http://gsrnnfillingpieces.com) to the UK. In his spare time Dan is a dancer and we’ve discussed many sneakers on many dancefloors over the years. When I asked Dan about his first pair, he got all glassy eyed about a pair of Huaraches back in 1992, when this shoe was a game changer. “I didn’t know or understand that there was a sneaker culture and being from a small town I had no clue where or what to buy, just what I liked” but eventually Dan learnt and has amassed a 130 pair collection. Sitting pretty amongst that selection are some Nike 180 Union’s which he knows I slept on and wish I had in my collection. Lee from Strictly Sneakers was up next for a grilling. Strictly Sneakers are a three man sneaker selling collective, and one that does the job properly. These guys aren’t just Hypebeasts trying to make a quick buck. Lee never thought he’d be a collector. He started off in the same innocuous way many of us do: Buying kicks and competing with your pals to have the best. When he was listing off some of his old spots, he reminded me of the now defunct store Gloria’s in Truman Brewery off Brick Lane. A store, that was possibly ahead of its time? If it was still open now I’m sure it would rival the likes of Foot Patrol. Lee also had this to say which in my humble opinion shows his collecting nous “To us our collections are not de-

fined by the heat or price tags of your collection, it’s about what means something to you or what you like. The moral is buy what YOU want. Every crep has a story. A person who grew up collecting can tell you every shop, every journey, every time they nearly got jacked”. Much like the DJ world, the sneaker game is predominantly made up of men, but when the female of the species get involved, they come correct and totally hold their own. One such example is Carrlean Chang, writer and member of the Street Weird collective. Carrlean is someone that pays no heed to the hype and follows her own path. She would often window shop when she was

Lee: Strictly sneakers

Carrlean Chang: Nike AJ 12’s younger dreaming of what kicks she’d cop when she had a job and recalls that wonderful feeling she had when she finally was able to buy that first pair of Nike. With a collection sitting around 150 pairs it can put many headz to shame. Carrlean shared a sad tale that will resonate with many of us, about throwing away some AJ 12s many moons ago, that she really wishes she kept. How many of us think about that pair that we let go? We become attached to our creps like people are with their pets. Finally, I caught up with a long term pal (and I mean thirty years plus) who has been mentioned on these pages before, Rich The Babyface Assassin. That last bit relates to how cold blooded he is when picking up a sneaker deal. He has a sixth sense when it comes to finding sick kicks at cheaper prices. Me and Rich used to roam the playgrounds back in the day not knowing how our sneaker addictions would mirror each other and even back then he was rocking Nike Windjammers. It’s funny how you can forget all manner of really important info, but we can clearly recall our first dope kicks. Variety is the spice of life in Rich’s 250 strong collection and he’s sitting on more than just the mega brands with stuff by Clae alongside his favourites including Nike Air Max Light Newark Eagles.

your own path and don’t be a sheep. More importantly, wear the damn things, they are sneakers, made to be worn.

Peep our collections on Instagram: @nickair75 @supa__c @danielkeatinguk

Having spoken to these collectors, one theme ran throughout: None of us really chose to become sneaker pimps, it just kinda happened. One minute you’re staring at a pair of trainers in a shop window in Wimbledon or copping creps with your Olympus Sports staff discount, like me back in 1991, the next minute you’re stacking a three digit sneaker collection! If you are starting off on your path to sneaker enlightenment, don’t overthink that ish, buy what you fancy, follow

Dynamic warm up VS Static stretching warm What we have noticed like most catch phrases in fitness, the “Dynamic Warm up” has become a standardize set of exercises used by everyone. What we would caution is that you must remember the key focus and purpose from an internal and mental or physiological and psychological aspects; some of these include: ACTIVATION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Increase Body Awareness Reduce fear of injury Create Mental Focus Prepare the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints for motion Increase mental and physical reaction time

Whether you are a trainer/coach, athlete, or fitness enthusiasts you have probably heard the terms ”Dynamic Warm Up” and the terms ” Static Stretching”. If you haven’t heard the terms you probably know with what each involves as it relates to the physical activities you enjoy, compete, or coach. My goal today is to shed a bit of light on the importance and difference between the two and allow you to train to your maximum through a safe and effective method. Classic exercise protocols developed in the late 1970′s instructed youth and adults from scholastic physical education to competitive sports on the importance of static, or non movement stretching of the muscles to prevent injuries and prepare the body for exercise. As we look at this, like most things we were previously taught, we find that in a truly mobile, dynamic and unpredictable environment such as sport and life using a non movement based activity to prepare is not the best we to go. As for the science, we all understand that our Central Nervous System is the information highway for the body; thus there is theory that static stretching (positioning the body in a fixed position while a target muscle or body part is held away from a neutral or relaxed position, also known as anatomical zero) reduces the neural (referring to nerves) activation in a target muscle, the reducing the number of motor units available for the subsequent contraction ( the motor unit, simply is the unit that causes the muscle to con-

tract and the greater number of these units that “fire” the stronger the contraction. The contraction produces force that translates to movement). Basically in preparation for movement we want our CNS to be active and aware. Thus we introduce the Dynamic Warm up, a systematic approach to preparing the body to move. The research we viewed showed a significant increase in performance in athletes who participated in a dynamic warm up versus static stretching. 68

Coaches and Athletes should focus the DWU in a progressive manor from small movements in one plane (or direction of movement) to larger multi joint multi directional movements. We will discuss in detail and provide some examples in the following weeks. You can view some of our warm ups during our weekly Combine360 training videos. A key to remember is the movements should relate to the following activity and or training focus. So regardless of how you train, warm up the intended and associated muscles for that action.

LUNGES VS SQUATS

RECOVERY FROM INJURY RICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER AN INJURY, SUCH AS A KNEE OR ANKLE SPRAIN, YOU CAN RELIEVE PAIN AND SWELLING AND PROMOTE HEALING AND FLEXIBILITY WITH RICE—REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, AND ELEVATION. As soon as possible after an injury, such as a knee or ankle sprain, you can relieve pain and swelling and promote healing and flexibility with RICE—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Lunges and squats are some of the best exercises for the lower body, especially the buttocks and the thighs. Even though they target the same muscle groups, not many people are aware of the differences between them. Many people mistakenly believe that doing one of the two exercises is sufficient; however, the truth is that both these forms of exercises need to be performed in tandem with each other in order to tone the lower body. Following are some differences between the two forms of exercises: POSTURE The primary difference between the two is in the nature of the posture and the movement. While squats are performed with both the feet placed on a stationary spot, lunges require one leg to be stretched forward which is then followed by lowering of the upper body. TIMING You must never perform lunges and squats in the same workout session as this will place too much stress on your body. Instead, you should perform them on alternate days to increase the strength in your lower body. Lunges are more useful for people who play sports like basketball since it increases the explosive power in the legs. Thus, an individual who knows how to do lunges will have the ability to jump higher and faster. On the other hand, squats can be performed with heavier weights since your feet are placed firmly on the ground. This is beneficial for increasing the firmness of the thighs, and for toning the thighs and the buttocks. CENTER OF GRAVITY When you perform lunges, the muscle group that is targeted is known as the Gluteal muscles, simply known as the glutes. This is a group of three muscles that form the composition of the buttocks, and these are the Gluteus maximus, the Gluteus minimus, and the Gluteus medius. The quads and the adductor muscles are also strengthened by performing this exercise in the right manner. Squats also primarily target the same muscles worked by lunges; however, the center of gravity is more central in this case since you are not shifting the position of the feet, thus making it easier to balance. Hence, the stress on the spinal cord is increased. For these reasons it would be unfair to say that one of the two exercises is better than the other, since they are both beneficial in their own manner. DIFFICULTY Another key difference is that the lunges are far more difficult to perform. Many seasoned exercise lovers know that one can easily perform around 50-100 squats a day, but for most people anything more than 15-20 lunges per leg can cause excruciating pain the next day. While it is good to push yourself while exercising, there is a certain limit beyond which you must not force yourself. This will only lead to serious muscle damage and pain the day after. This is why it is advisable not to perform lunges and squats on the same day. The knees are at a greater risk of damage if you perform excessive lunges.

REST. Rest and protect the injured or sore area. Stop, change, or take a break from any activity that may be causing your pain or soreness. ICE. Cold will reduce pain and swelling. Apply an ice or cold pack right away to prevent or minimize swelling. Apply the ice or cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 or more times a day. After 48 to 72 hours, if swelling is gone, apply heat to the area that hurts. Do not apply ice or heat directly to the skin. Place a towel over the cold or heat pack before applying it to the skin. COMPRESSION. Compression, or wrapping the injured or sore area with an elastic bandage, will help decrease swelling. Don’t wrap it too tightly, because this can cause more swelling below the affected area. Loosen the bandage if it gets too tight. Signs that the bandage is too tight include numbness, tingling, increased pain, coolness, or swelling in the area below the bandage. Talk to your doctor if you think you need to use a wrap for longer than 48 to 72 hours; a more serious problem may be present. ELEVATION. Elevate the injured or sore area on pillows while applying ice and anytime you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the area at or above the level of your heart to help minimize swelling.

AS AN ARTIST, AND WHAT IMPACT HAS IT MADE ON YOUR MUSIC AND SOUND? You are a product of your environment.. Where you’re born and the life you lead determines your reference points. So obviously my music is a product of the environment I live in but everyone’s got a different story to tell that’s what makes it unique. YOU HAVE RECENTLY COMPLETED A PERFORMING ARTS DEGREE, HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A CREATIVE INDIVIDUAL, AND HAS MUSIC ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR? I always had a passion for Art, Drama, Music and physical activities as a kid but, was unsure how to channel the energy’s I felt when I was listening to a piece of music I liked, until I found my voice and started rapping.

by Gavin Peters

Introducing... ‘COOPS’

HOW AND WHERE DID THE NAME COOPS COME FROM? My last names Cooper, Friends called me Coops and it just stuck. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR NEW MIXTAPE “LOST SOUL” AND WHAT INSPIRED IT? Lost Soul was inspired by my life up until this point. It’s full of deep moods and concepts, reflective thoughts and good vibes. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR MIXTAPE- ANY SURPRISES? No surprises, unless hearing someone talk some sense surprises people. YOUR ONLY 23, BUT YOUR CONTENT SEEMS VERY MATURE, DO YOU BASE A LOT OF YOUR LYRICS ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCES? The way I see it is, as long I stay true to my experiences and myself then I can never run out of content. So yes I do.

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF BUZZ AROUND YOU ESPECIALLY FROM A LOT OF MEDIA OUTLETS SUCH AS SBTV WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR INITIAL REACTION FROM THIS? Yeah -I’m appreciating the support, it’s just making me want to keep pushing. YOU WERE MENTIONED IN VIBE MAGAZINE WHICH IS A BIG THING, HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU FOUND OUT? Vibe was a very good look, I’m just hoping that they keep their eye on me then maybe in the future I can get on the front cover lol

HOW EASY IS IT FOR YOU TO WRITE YOUR LYRICS, DO YOU GO THROUGH A PROCESS? I just need a beat that inspires me, it could be something that matches the mood I’m feeling at the time or have a bounce to it that jus makes me wanna flow over it but either way I prefer to have the music first then work the lyrics around it.

WHICH ARTISTS DO YOU LOOK UP TO GROWING UP AND WHY? Bob Marley as my mums always been a big fan of his; she used to play him in the car a lot when I was a kid so I was always singing along. I guess when I grew up and got to understand what he stood for and the messages his songs were sending, it had a lasting effect and influence on me as a person.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU AS AN ARTIST TO MAKE MUSIC? Music that feels like it has a greater purpose than to just to be listened to. Music that breaks down boundaries in the way people think and music that uplifts and inspires. I want to entertain people with intelligence not ignorance.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT WINNING CHOICE FM BREAKTHOUGH COMPETITION? Felt great but not for long as the nerves soon kicked in when I realised it was actually going to happen and I was going to be up on that stage in front of everyone.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? When people enjoy listening to my music as much as I enjoy creating it.

YOU RECENTLY PERFORMED WITH HIP HOP GIANT NAS, WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH HIM, DID HE GIVE YOU ANY ADVICE? I never got to meet him. I’m guessing he was either too busy or not

bothered. I arrived while he was doing his sound check which they let us stay in on, that was cool as I was about to go up and do mine next so I got to watch and learn from the don. HAVING LISTENED TO YOUR MUSIC, IT’S NOT LIKE A LOT OF UK HIP HOP IT HAS A LOT OF AMERICAN INFLUENCE. YOU REMINDED ME A LOT OF NAS EARLY WORK, IS THIS SOMETHING YOU EMBRACE IN TERMS OF SOUND AND FLOW? I take that as a massive compliment. Nas has made some epic albums in his career which have inspired me as a musician. So if people are making that link through my music than I must be doing something right. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I’m still tryna figure out how It all works myself, so no changes as yet so far so good. LYRICALLY YOUR GREAT EVEN DOWN TO YOUR FLOWS, HOW MUCH CREATIVE IMPACT DO YOU HAVE UPON YOUR MUSIC AND HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS FOR YOU? I’ve always been into jumping on 90s beats but found it hard to get hold of any original production of the same quality level until I met my bro Talos whilst studying at Uni. I can’t say we started at the level it’s grown to now but that’s why we work well together bacuase we grew the sound together. As for my writing I write all my own lyrics and I’m always trying to better my craft, putting thought into my structuring and rhyming patterns. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT AN ALBUM FROM YOU? Too early to tell, but I look forward to making one WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I like to enjoy the moment; don’t really have plans, I’m pretty spontaneous and do things last minute but I plan to stick around.

Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Ann Johnson April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American poet, memoirist, actress and an important figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than fifty years. She received dozens of awards and over thirty honorary doctoral degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ (1969), tells of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim. She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, night-club dancer and performer, cast-member of the opera Porgy and Bess, coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the days of decolonization. She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. Since 1982, she taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she holds the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Since the 1990s she made around eighty appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem On the Pulse of Morning at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961.

fense of black culture. Although attempts have been made to ban her books from some US libraries, her works are widely used in schools and universities worldwide. Angelou’s major works have been labeled as autobiographical fiction, but many critics have characterized them as autobiographies. She made a deliberate attempt to challenge the common structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing, and expanding the genre. Her books center on themes such as racism, identity, family, and travel. Angelou is best known for her autobiographies, but she is also an established poet, although her poems have received mixed reviews. Although Angelou is best known for her seven autobiographies, she has also been a prolific and successful poet. She has been called “the black woman’s poet laureate”, and her poems have been called the anthems of African Americans. Angelou studied and began writing poetry at a young age, and used poetry and other great literature to cope with her rape as a young girl, as described in Caged Bird. In 2001 she was named one of the 30 most powerful women in America by Ladies Home Journal. Maya Angelou is known for her series of six autobiographies, starting with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in 1969 which was nominated for a National Book Award and called her magnum opus. Her volume of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die (1971) was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She was also the first African-American woman to be honored with a Pulitzer Prize.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change With the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” Sings, Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal ― Maya Angelou – life. She was respected as a spokesperson of black people and women, and her works have been considered a deRest In Perfect Peace Maya Angelou 77
