Producers said the musical is set in a Midwestern industrial city set during the present time tells the tale of two childhood friends as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions.
‘initially I had doubts about signing on for the highly sought after role, I was honestly confused about why they came to me, I thought you cant be serious’ he told The Independent Newspaper’, ‘Then I found out he was into The Wire, then I thought – that’s amazing he might of kicked back and watched The Wire Box set. He continued, ‘To call the prospect of playing Nelson Mandela daunting would be putting it lightly, but it is a massive honour to play this saint amongst men’. Mandela: A Long Road to Freedom, based on his 1994 biography, is set to be released in the UK in 2014.
Return of Rocky Balboa? 80’s action hero Sylvester Stallone is currently in talks to reprise the role of his Oscar winning character Rocky Balboa for the seventh time at the ripe old age of 67!
Afeni Shakur, the late artists’ mother will serve as producer on the production.

In this instalment a spin off entitled Creed, Balboa has hung up his gloves and is now a retired fighter turned trainer. The story focuses on the grandson of Apollo Creed, Balboa’s friend and long time boxing rival, who was killed in the ring in Rocky IV. His grandson is to be played by The Wire’s Michael B Jordan, the character has intentions to become a heavyweight champion and looks at Balboa for mentorship. According to reports Stallone is said to “love” the premise of the spin off movie and will serve as producer as well as appearing on screen. Stallone last played Balboa in 2006’s Rocky Balboa, which revived the iconic franchise after a 16-year break. The actor is currently overseeing the transfer of the Rocky stage musical from Hamburg, Germany, where it debuted last November (2012), to Broadway, where it’s due to open early next year (2014).
Sharon Osbourne throws shade by saying Justin Bieber acting is “black”
Original Sugababes aka MKS Reunited They started out in 2000, a sassy young trio comprising Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Beuna and Siobhan Donaghy, storming the charts with their uncompromising and highly infectious sound, all infused with an urban twist.
Outspoken X Factor Judge Sharon Osborne has launched an astonishing attack on teen Idol Justin Bieber by saying that the reason why he is acting out is cause he is trying to ‘act black” She recently told the Daily Beast “I think that he’s lost, I really do, I think he doesn’t realize he’s white and not black, that’s a huge problem.”
Who could forget their debut single Overload. A nod to the girl power ideals that were still firmly in place in the early 00’s. Then came, the rumours of catfights and bullying and the start of the merry-go-round line up change.
Hhhhmm now since when has allegedly spitting at fans, trashing hotel rooms, leaving your fans waiting hours to see you perform live and trying to attack paparazzi signs of someone acting black? Her comments sparked controversy on Twitter
Siobhan was the first quit, quickly replaced by Heidi Range, Then Mutya bounced and Amelle Berrabah was launched as the newest member, but for many the final straw was the sacking of Keisha replaced quickly by Jade Ewen.
With one user CraigStunna, writing: ‘What Sharon Osbourne said about Justin Bieber was racist as hell! So him apparently acting “bad” means he’s trying to be black? Oh ok Rhoodje wrote: “Your comment about Justin Bieber is really racist! Define ‘acting black’ please?
But the girls fought back and fast forward 13 years they have reunited and have returned with a new name MKS (Mutya, Keisha, Siobhan) and a more mature sound. The girls are on the verge of releasing their first single entitled Flatline.
Idris Elba: Nelson Mandela is a Fan of The Wire.
Ironically the ‘new sugababes’ seem to be on a musical hiatus so it will be nice to see if the old and new “babes” go head to head, But it will interesting to see whether MKS reach the same success more than a decade on.
Luther star Idris admits one of the reasons why he took on the role to play the Iconic Nelson Mandela was because he found out that he was a fan of the HBO classic The Wire.

Jordan Dunn: Naomi Campbell taught me how to look after myself in the industry Super Model Naomi Campbell has often had the reputation as being difficult to work with and quite intimidating but according to new model Jordan Dunn that is simply not the case. She actually credits her success to advice she received from the Iconic supermodel. Dunn revealed that Campbell taught her how to look after herself on shoots and during catwalk shows by bringing snacks on set in case the crew forgot to feed her. Speaking to Vogue.com she said ‘Naomi sad I had to look after myself – remember to look after number one, she told me not to forget to ask for time off otherwise they will book you for job after job and never get a break’. Although many find the Streatham born supermodel imitating, Dunn had no qualms meeting one of fashions most famous faces.

Historically steel bands, Soca & Calypso Music have been at the heart of Carnival but in recent years these have been overtaken by the static sound systems playing anything from Reggae to R&B, Funk, House, Dub and much more. The core of the carnival is the smell, the wonderful aromas of traditional Caribbean food. APPLE iPHONE 5 RRP: £529.00 (16GB). The iphone 5 really is more than a longer iphone 4 with a new charger. The market may demand a new revolution every upgrade season, however Apple may just have supplied what the people need, and not what they say they want. This creates a powerful evolution on the theme of iphone which is currently putting the com-
SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 RRP: £500.00 inc VAT. The Galaxy S4 is a good phone with excellent performance and hardware, but it’s not flawless. The main let down is the build quality, considering the handset costs slightly more than its rivals and while the S4 is packed with features we find a lot of them to be gimmicky. key features -5in Full HD Super AMOLED display -13-megapixel camera with simultaneous dual photo capture -Easy mode simplifies-explore at your own pace. -Air gesture-makes touch screen touch free. -Group play -1.9GHz quad-core processor
SONY XPERIA Z -RRP: £520.00 inc VAT SONY XPERIA Z -RRP: £520.00 inc VAT. The Xperia Z is the first Smartphone that Sony have nailed. One of the favourite features is the stylish, desireable and rugged design. It includes a fantastic screen, as well as a combination of excellent performance and great cameras making the Xperia Z a force not to be messed with. There is very little to criticise about this phone.
Many of you may have heard of 4G technology as it has revolutionised the way we get information and how we get it. It has become a major factor and component, in particular through mobile smartphones and tablets. But what will it mean for you the consumer and what advantages will it bring to the table? Here will breakdown all that info for you and how it will benefit you and your phone. WHAT IS 4G? 4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone technology and follows on from 2G and 3G. It will provide faster internet speeds. 2G technology was suitable for making calls and sending text messages while 3G makes it possible to access the internet more effectively through your mobile phone. WHY DO I NEED 4G AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT? Essentially the way we use our mobiles is changing, as we use our mobiles and do so much more on them such as video streaming, as oppose to a time when we just needed them to make calls and texting. 4G services should make it much quicker to surf the web on your mobile, tablets and laptops – speeds will be nearer to what you currently experience with home broadband. 4G is ideally suited for services which demand more capacity like video streaming, mapping and social networking sites. For the typical user, download speeds of initial 4G networks could be around 5-7 times those for existing 3G networks. Essentially this will mean a music album taking 20 minutes to download on a 3G phone and just over 3 minutes on 4G, on average of 5 and 7 times faster. WHAT IS THE COVERAGE LIKE? Consumers will be able to surf the web stream high-quality videos and download big files on their mobile device from almost every home in the UK.’ However, given that it is easier to provide coverage outdoors, a network meeting this obligation is likely to cover more than 99% of the UK by population when outdoors. IS 4G AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE IN THE UK? Currently the 4G service is being rolled out through many service providers. Although the actual service will not be available in all local towns and major cities cities at present it is hoped by the end of 2013, early 2014 it will be available to most of the UK. To find out if you will have it in your area contact you network provider.
24/7 Rating 4.5/5 HTC ONE -RRP RRP: £529.00 There is no doubt that the HTC is up there competing with the best smart phones on the market today. It has excellent performance and built well although it is let down by its excessive heat while in use. The HTC also matches the other high end products in terms of price. The audio and visual output is competing with the other leading smart phones. The interface might be an acquired taste for some, and the camera was not the only feature which was impressive. Overall the HTC is not perfect, but it is near enough as good as the Iphone 5 and the Xperia Z. key features -4.7in display, full HD 1080P, 468 pip -BlinkFeed™ on your phone, you’re never out of touch with your world. All your favourite content is streamed live onto one screen. -slim improved design -dual frontal stereo speakers with powerful amplifiers -sense voice during calls 24/7 Rating 3.5/5

GOOGLE NEXUS 4 RRP: £239.00 FOR 8GB, or £279 for 16GB.
NOKIA LUMIA 925 RRP £442.00
As long as the storage capacities suffice, the Nexus 4 is a definition of a bargain. You get the performance and features of a high end smart phone for half the price you would expect to pay. Unless you are set on an iphone or Xperia z, the Nexus 4 is an unbeatable bargain.
The phone itself is light and has easy functionality. The screens sharp and has good colour to it- and the device has an improved camera. The battery itself is good, but like most smartphones battery consumption is used quickly due to phone applications. Having Windows 8 software also gives it an added advantage above most phones.
key features -Latest google apps -crisp 4.7” display -Gesture typing for texting -8MP Camera-records in 1080p HD video -Quad core performance, 2GB Ram -Android beam for quick sharing

24/7 MOTORING
There is a carbon finish to the centre console, a six speed manual gearbox, Ford Racing pedals, & also a starter button. Although this is a high performance sports car once you look behind you will see back seats for adults & children to sit comfortably. The boot space isn’t compromised either as you can still get the pushchairs & shopping in there without any issues.
FORD FOCUS RS By Jazinhino Phillips Manfucturer: Ford Make & Model: Focus RS Turbo RRP: £24,995 new / between £18,000 - £20,000 used. The Ford Focus RS is a car for the driver who wants practicality without having to compromise on performance. 305 BHP (brake horse power), with a top speed of 163 mph is what the RS gives you on front wheels. Considering the first generation Focus RS gave you 212 hp with a top speed of 144mph, it’s fair to say this is a remarkable improvement. However the improvements don’t stop there 0-62 is now 5.9 secs instead of 6.4 secs so your shopping trips/school runs will be that little bit more exhila-
rating. This 2.5 litre five-cylinder turbo charged engine with 440Nm of torque is not for the faint hearted, nor is it a car for women who desire a car that “looks cute”. This car looks aggressive, the grille, the 19 inch multi-spoke alloy wheels the spoiler are all signs that this car is ready to take the rough with the smooth. The driveshafts are much bigger, the ride height has been lowered and the steering rack has been fastened. I think it means business. The torque steer problem from the previous Focus has been reduced thanks to a clever suspension system called RevoKnuckle. Now you’re really in better control. This is no ordinary Focus. The moment you sit inside it you immediately have a better understanding why this car is a maniac. The turbo gauge sits on top of the centre dashboard; the front seats hug you tightly as if it’s a person that is really pleased to see you. The RS stitching on the headrest are nice little reminders of what you’re getting into. 16
This reduces possible arguments with the partner who is not enthusiastic about having a sports car as the family car. Only three colours are available for this model which are Ultimate Green, Frozen White, & Performance Blue. So what else do you get for a car that would of cost £24,995 new? You get figure hugging Recaro front seats, climate control, alarm, cd multi changer, headlight washers, cloth seat trim, PAS (Power Assisted Steering), ABS, passenger airbag, traction control, front & rear electric windows, side airbags, folding rear seats, & alloy wheels. So for paying just under a quarter of £100,000 you don’t even get built in satellite navigation. You don’t even get parking sensors unless you buy the RS500 or buy it as an optional extra. Thanks for nothing Ford. Did it occur to you that somebody
could be driving really fast missed his or her turning as a result & end up getting lost? So now we could potentially have a few RS Focus cars on the roads driving up & down aimlessly because they’re lost. However I doubt my little rant will deter anybody from purchasing your beautiful machine. It is to my understanding that some people may have sold their mother, father, grandparents, &/or even their own soul to own a RS. One friend of mine has this car; I wonder what he did to get it. Anyway I digress, is it worth getting? Yes yes and yes. This car is a winner & you should do whatever it takes to have one in your possession. If I don’t write another motoring article then assume I got apprehended while trying to obtain my RS.

24/7MONEYWISE The Bank of England Loves the Great British Summer of Sport
month-on-month progression in positive growth figures to ensure that the trickle down of money spent is converted into new jobs, companies expanding their operations, etc. To quote my mum, “one sunny day does not a summer make”. That caution holds true here. There was a lot of deep discounting across major retailers in order to entice customers back into the shops. There is nothing more depressing for the Bank of England to hear that footfall (shop visits) is up, but there being no real trade, purely an army of window shoppers out, enjoying the sunshine.
expected to need. Secondly, and perhaps even more surprising than the good weather, is that our nation is suddenly really good at sport. This has helped cash tills around the country to keep ringing late into the summer evenings. The successful Lions rugby tour of Australia, Chris Froome’s Tour de France victory, the Olympics Anniversary Games and of course the monumental Wimbledon win by Andy Murray has given the country a “feel good” factor, which encourages the nation, but especially the more frugal sex – us gentlemen – to spend more freely whilst we watch Messrs Froome, Murray and alike carve their names into the annals of sporting history).
The high street avoided this happening but the sales cannot continue for ever. The true test of the recovery will be the consumer spending figures which are reported during the gloomy months preceding Christmas, when 2013’s glorious summer of sporting triumph will be a distant memory and it is pouring with rain outside. The Bank of England may not have such a sunny disposition at this stage, but saying that, Greggs will probably see business pick up…
Helen Dickinson of the BRC noted that the high street is performing strongly around the sales of “feel good foods”. Throw the birth of the royal baby on the pile of good news, then there’s every excuse for an extra beer or banger from the ‘barbie’. Of course, the items to facilitate all of this fun in the sun are also performing well. Paddling pools, DIY tools and garden furniture have seen an uptick in sales, in comparison to this time last year. Well, that’s settled then; we’re all outside, watching the sport, in the back garden stuffing ourselves full of charcoaled food or in the shops buying swimwear and sandals. But for every winner, economics dictates that a loser must be named. What has the impact been to our friends, the internet shops? Interestingly, internet retail is yet to harness the power of the sun, as online sales grew by 7.9% for the same period, which is relatively anaemic for this sector. It illustrates the power of the sunshine to draw people away from their computers and back onto the “physical” high street.

Alongside the internet sales growth slowdown, Greggs Bakery have also reported a 3.2% fall in sales in the 5 weeks to 3rd August and a subsequent profit warning, grumpily blaming it all on the warm weather. According to them, record temperatures and flaky pastry treats do not seem to mix.

Life and business often share similar traits – companies are born, Every year, the Earth tilts ever so slightly on its axis to expose the frozen inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere to a small time window that we loosely refer to as “Summer”. During my school days ‘Summer’ was defined by a few simple truths: (i) It was the season that sat between spring and autumn; (ii) During this magical season, we school children would be released from our educational bonds for at least six weeks, to enjoy a period of freedom known as the ‘summer holiday’. (iii) During this season, every day lasted 84 hours and you could ride your bike or play football in the street with your mates, basking in blazing hot sunshine from dawn til dusk.
number of financial markers.
Sadly (iii) was merely a nostalgic fabrication for anyone not alive to experience the summer holidays of the 1970’s - in particular, the gloriously hot summer of 1976, since voted the happiest year Britain has ever seen. Is the blistering summer of 1976 and it being voted the best year of all time a coincidence? I think not.
The British Retail Consortium (BRC for short) has recently stated that the 2013 heat wave has had a positive impact on each and every one of us, influencing the way we spend our hard earned cash. The BRC noted that the warm, sunny weather helped retail sales rise 2.2% on a like for like basis compared with the summer of 2012.
But 2013’s summer has been a good ‘un. After an appalling winter and shaky spring, 2013 has delivered the goods, rolling back the years to show us how it feels to bathe in wall to wall sunshine, ‘70’s style.
There were cheers across the City and within the halls of the Bank of England, as the results came through. The heat has encouraged us to spend money on luxury items; food and drink mainly, as we seek to take advantage of the sunshine. It stands to reason; if the weather is pleasant, we come out to spend more time on leisure activities, such as shopping. The BRC reports that clothing was one of the big winners from the increased spending as people ran out to grab the skimpy, breathable garments they had not
What have all of these weather-based ramblings got to do with the economy, I hear you ask. Everything, I say. Consumer spending behaviour is often viewed against the seasons. JAY Z: MAGNA CARTA HOLY GRAIL
ROBIN THICKE: BLURRED LINES
No surprises that this LP went to number one not only stateside but in the UK, which just shows the amount of support and following Sean Carter (Jay Z) still has. Magna Carta Holy Grail is ’Jiggaz’ 12th solo album which surprisingly went platinum before it was even released.
Well what can i say, the R&B crooner, has produced a fair album, but it always concerns me when an artist feels the need to go mainstream from their roots and not producing the best music.
Musically the album relies heavily on Timbaland productions. Holy Grail featuring Justin Timberlake opens the album to which Timberlake does add a dimension to the track followed by a Jay Z rap sets the scene to the album of what we are to expect. The album arguably not one of Jay Zs best album but not the worst sees a blend of ignorance blended into one, which is not all bad. Lyrically this album is not the best I have heard of Jay Z. His insecurities of being a father are conveyed to us which shows a side to Jay we are not all to familiar seeing which I’m sure his fans will embrace. One juicy cut from the album is the track ’Tom Ford’ he mentions ”F**k hashtags and retweets,” runs one offhand soundbite. Having listened to the album several times it is quite a varied production which is far beyond the usual Jay Z content we use too. There isn’t really a great deal of headline news here, lyrically, just Jay’s constantly varying, beat-sensitive flow, familiar from ’Watch the Throne.’ Even though Carter may not need to continue making music or even to prove a point he is a global icon and phenomenon in his own right he continues to push a constantly changing world of the Hip-Hop genre as we know it. After establishing yourself as one of the greatest, what else is there left to do! Rating: 3.5/5
One of the major tracks off the album is, ‘Blurred lines’ featuring the help of T.I. and Pharrell Williams, baring in mind the single never had any promo-it proved to be very popular and gained viral status. ‘For The Rest of My Life,’ is also a well deserving track on the LP as this is the closest you will hear to Thickes R&B trademark roots. The music is sunny funk/ soul and is very happy sounding and has a commercial feel all throughout.
CHRIS BROWN ft Aaliyah: ‘DONT THINK THEY KNOW’ (July) Many artist have use the late singers Aaliyah vocals, within their song, although I think this track is put together well, with Chris Brown vocals alongside the angelic voice of Aaliyah. Its hard to believe she is still not aliveher voice still sounds very current. The track itself is well put together and I think the whole production has been thought through carefully.
RUDIMENTAL ft. FOXES: ‘RIGHT HERE’ (Aug 11) This group can do no wrong musically at the moment. The drum and bass beat is not only infectious but the chorus vocals are catchy too. This track, is definitely a crowd pleaser with its up-tempo sound that will get you dancing in or out of a club. Overall the track is well produced and easy to the ear. Rating: 3.5/5
LADY GAGA: ‘APPLAUSE’ (Aug 18) Having not released any vocals to this track, Gaga has decided to release just an audio of her upcoming single. This uptempo offering is definitely a club banger and has a hard house presence to it and a pulsating beat. The track I’m sure will be a hit with hardcore GaGa fans.

NAUGHTY BOY ft. EMELIE SANDé: ‘LIFTED’ (Aug 18) The follow up to ‘LaLaLa,’ ‘lifted’ is the new installment from Naughty Boy. The track featuring Emilie Sande adds yet again flawless vocals to a upbeat tune. The song itself is very likeable and has a good production, with stringed instruments adding depth to the song, as well as the catchy chorus. Im sure its likely to do big things in the charts. Rating 3/5
I’m sure fans of both artists will not be left disappointed with this mellow chilled tune.

A major down factor to this LP, is the lack of ballads that Thicke has been known for. Whilst producing a safe album Thicke himself does not overexert himself or try to hard and it shows. Rating: 3/5
TINIE TEMPAH: ‘TRAMPOLINE’ (Aug 4) This DIPLO produced track does not disappoint. The track opens up with an infectious beat along with the Tinie’s trademark ‘yeaaah’. This up-tempo club banger of a cut, has all the elements of a Tinie tune, full of energy and very quirky. 2Chainz adds another dimension to the track, which is not essential to the track, even so the track has top 10 written all over it. RIZZLE KICKS: ‘LOST GENERATION’ (Aug 18)
WRETCH 32 ft. JACOB BANKS: ‘DOING OK’ (Aug 18)
The boyish troublesome twosome known as Rizzle Kicks, release their new single ’Lost generation’ off their new album ’Roaring 20s.’ The single itself is very catchy and mainstream and that is why it will have a lot of popular appeal especially amongst younger audiences. It is nothing more of less from what we would expect from the pair.
The princess of Roc Nation, Rihanna reWretch32 can do no wrong at the moment, his songs continue to be consistently good, and this latest instalment from him is no different. With guest vocals from Jacob Banks, it brings a whole new added value to the track. A very melodic and upbeat song- it really has a feel good feel to it and will sound good this summer.

Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan release ‘Flatline’ from their yet to be titled debut album. Having listened to track at least 3 times- I think it is a fair attempt from the trio, the vocals and harmonies are great and work well for the track. The chorus is catchy and its nice to see all three ladies adding lead vocals throughout the song. It’s a worthy attempt and will have mainstream appeal, although I don’t really feel they have pushed the boundaries of which I know they are capable of. However I’m sure there will be more to come from the three ladies, so watch this space... Rating 4/5

Utilising a classic silhouette from the early days of Nike, but switching it up by having the upper in mesh. A very lightweight shoe where you can feel the breeze tickling your toes. Rounding things off I’m going to touch on a couple of creps from the vaults (or just sitting above my wardrobe actually). The first being the Nike Chapuka. A strange shoe from 2001 that was designed by the Alpha Project team (who also designed the Presto). These keep your feet cool by basically having no sides and a plastic ‘cage’ to hold the laces. They probably sound awful on paper? Instagram was popping off the other day with people that are holding these in their collection. Finally, I’m going to leave you with the humble Nike Air Woven. A shoe that still gets manufactured today. A marmite shoe if ever there was one, but its simplistic woven upper means it’s a joy to wear when the weather is roasting. Whatever you reach for this Summer, do the right thing and make sure you chuck them kicks in a cool wash from time to time, as it’s no good being cool, if your feet are kicking up! By Grant Richards I was recently asked by an old school pal to jot down some words about one of my favourite subjects in life: Trainers. However, before I start waxing lyrical, I guess I should give you a little bit of background on what I can only really call an addiction. For me it really started back in ’91. I had work experience at Olympus Sports, Walthamstow (yep where that ‘amazing’ band E17 hailed from) which turned into a Saturday job and then I became a Footwear Specialist, where I got 98% in my exam. I was in trainer heaven seeing stock roll in like the OG 180s and Huaraches. I was such a little geek that I even designed my own kicks and sent them to Nike HQ (they politely told me where to go and palmed me off with next season’s footwear catalogue). So, I’m not one of those cats that has jumped on the bandwagon recently, just because it’s cool. Now being cool is the first thing I’m going to write about. Not in the fashion sense, mind you, more in the literal sense. After an elongated Spring, Summer has finally arrived and it raises the big question, ‘What kicks are best to rock in the heat?’ I’m talking trainers too, don’t step to me with any chat about Havianas or Birkenstocks. Most peoples feet are grim. Where we are going, we don’t need toes!! I’m going to focus on a couple of current creps and I’m going to talk about a few from the archives that I reach for each year, just to mix it up a bit. Firstly, if you are still wearing Nike Rifts, take a long hard look in the mirror. Then remove the offending shoes and ceremoniously burn them. Shed a small tear, for the once great shoe of Summer. Now let’s bring it bang up-to-date and let’s talk about the Nike Roshe Run. They snuck out last
Top Boy 2: The Drama Continues... In 2011 there was one TV series that had everyone talking, Channel 4 presented the urban drama Top Boy, it was an unapologetic account of inner city life, drug and gang culture that is prevalent in many a London Borough and big cities across the UK. The idea for the critically acclaimed drama came about when novelist and screenwriter Ronan Bennett a local hackney resident witnessed a 12 year old selling drugs in his local supermarket forecourt. ‘He [the young boy], was hanging around the forecourt. An older man approached him. They exchanged a few words and briefly shook hands - I just about saw the money passed over. The boy slid away. A couple of minutes later a second ‘tiny’ came up on a bike and spat something on the ground. The older man stooped to retrieve it and strolled off. It was a drug deal, five minutes from my home’ the writer explained ‘After seeing that I wanted to know more. I was already thinking about writing about this world, but I knew that if I did I would want to write about it from the bottom up, from the point of view, not of the police, but of the ‘tinies’ and ‘youngers’ hanging around the supermarket forecourt every day. But how was I going to get into this world I wanted to hear about the mechanics of drug dealing, but I also wanted to know about these kids’ lives. What were their homes like? Did they go to school? What did they think about their parents, teachers and the police? What music and clothes did they like? Relationships? What did they want from life? What were their expectations? How did they view the world? I was introduced to some kids on the street by my friend Gerry Jackson who was born raised in Hackney. They [the kids] talked with incredible and surprising candour. Some admitted to carrying guns, others bore the scars of knife wounds - Some stories were brutal and frightening, others sad – Some were unintentionally funny - “I didn’t get focused on making money until I was 13,” one ‘younger’ with a captain of industry’s soul said wistfully, “all them wasted years!” Others hoped to get out.’
By Michelle Martin The 247Livelistings Big Interview: Hanging on the phone with… Wretch 32. It can be perceived that North London is fast becoming the place to be from if you want to make it on the UK hip hop scene. Notable residents include double MOBO award winning rhyme master Chipmunk, acclaimed wordsmith Scorcher and 2012 BET Best International Act winner Wretch 32. 247 Livelistings.com caught up with the proud North Londoner who as he tells us about his pride at winning such an accolade, remaining true to his roots, his plans for 2013 and a dream date with Olympian Louise Hazel.
And armed with that information the critically acclaimed serial Drama Top Boy was born. Casting played a pivotal role to the drama’s success and saw stand out performances by So Solid founder member Ashley Walters, East London rapper Kano aka Kane Robinson and newcomer 15 year Malcolm Kamulete. The success of the series took everyone by surprise from TV critics to highbrow broadsheets even viewers were surprised at its success; everyone agreed that It was a voice that needed to be heard. And the timing couldn’t have been more apt. Premiering just after the 2011 summer riots, where the country witnessed two weeks of disorder that shook its foundations to its core. Many saw Toy Boy as gritty eye opener that was accurately reflective of the time. But as soon as the series finished the question on everyone’s lips was when would there be a sequel and this month sees that question answered.
Speaking to The Voice Newspaper Kano revealed ‘ since the first one finished, people have asked me, ‘when’s the second one coming out?’ It got such a huge fan base; people were online talking about it. So we do want to please those people and we hope they enjoy it. I think series 2 is gonna appeal to a wider audience, while hopefully still keeping the roots of what made the first one so successful. This time round, Drug dealer Dushane (Ashley Walters), has made it to Top Boy but has fallen out with his best friend and main ally Sully (Kano), who has become more desperate and aggressive in his measures to make money and has formed a new bond with his new ‘Co – D’, Mike, (Paul Anderson). But as the ‘Feds’ close in on their activities, tensions mount, Dushane and Sully have to reunite to take on a ruthless Albanian gang to save their livelihoods and their lives. Meanwhile Ra’Nell played brilliantly by newcomer Malcom Kamulete hopes football might be a way to escape life on the streets but his best friend Gem (Giacomo Mancini) has other plans that take him in a direction he is unable to control. Many agree that the thing that sets Top Boy apart from their contemporaries is its realism; it’s something the producers, actors and writers strived to portray accurately. ‘We are showing a slice of life’ Ashley Walters recently told The Guardian ‘I think its good to show that these humans are doing things they know they know are wrong, but they are normal people’ Something that co- star Kano agreed “From the very start, we – especially me and Ash [Walters] – stressed that that this [drama] is a slice of life. It’s not everybody’s life. But you’d be a liar if you said this didn’t happen in Hackney and in a lot of places around the world. And I come from east London, so I know. Series two of Top Boy series starts 20 August on Channel 4, series one is out on DVD.
24/7FEATURE
Her musical style however she describes as “something that she cannot pinpoint to a single genre, as it is a fusion Jazz, r&b, Motown and Soul, but she adds smiling “singing has always been in my blood”. Fast-forward to 2013 and Leyla’s biggest influence is a little closer to home In the guise of British born singer songwriter Lianne La Havas “I just love everything about her about at the moment,” gushes the young singer “she is at the top of my wish list and I would really love to work with her right now. Born in Amsterdam to a Vincentian /Trinidadian mother and Yemen/ English father, the family moved to London when she was 11. The recent graduate tells Young Voices when her love for singing and song writing first started. ‘I’ve always wanted to sing for as long as I can remember, but I really noticed that I could sing from about 9 years of age. My parents will tell you otherwise though, as they claim they new I was born to sing because as a baby my screams were not normal”, laughs the east Londoner “when it comes to writing I seem to be really comfortable writing sad songs even though I’m really happy and at a good stage in my life at the moment I’m also very driven and a bit of a perfectionist’ That drive has seen Leyla perform a series of live shows across London whilst still a student at the BRIT school and one of her highlights was performing a solo for The Duchess of Cornwall on her visit to the famed institute. She also boasts live performances at Canterbury Cathedral and at Dame Angela Rumbolds Memorial service.
By Michelle Martin Leyla Ley, The Little Girl with the big Voice It’s not everyday you get into a sing off with one of r&b’s heavyweights, but for one ambitious 17 year old this happened, and luckily for her, she came off the victor. ‘It was crazy” admitted singer songwriter and Brit School graduate Leyla Leiy“I was backstage at the The Show Tour, (The Jodeci, SWV, Changing Faces, Blackstreet and Dru Hill show that took place in March) and I got introduced to Sisqo from Dru Hill. Everyone kept telling me to sing for him so I did and then he joined in, it was so surreal, I started to go high, and then he went higher and then I hit a real high note and that’s when he gave up! And told me that I was a great singer and that I was going to go far” The impromptu sing off impressed the backstage audience, so much so that a certain Mr Teddy Riley or Blackstreet invited her out to Atlanta to work with him and discuss some projects for the future. A natural Soprano, at first glance Layla Ley’s resume could easily mirror that of a young Alicia Keys. She is a singer, songwriter and pianist, just like the Award winning Girl on Fire songstress, who she admits “was her first ever inspiration. She inspired me to play piano and to write my own songs.” But unlike the New Yorker, their looks are distinctly different. The diminutive singer who stands at barely 5ft rocks an impressive Afro and striking red lips. “I’ve always been different and I really cant define my style, if I like it I will wear it” admits the confident teenager. “ I try not follow trends and I think my personality is reflective in my style”.
“It was an amazing experience when she {Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall} came to visit us at The Brits, they were looking for someone to sing for her and every one said I should do it so I did” she said I had a great voice.
Singing for dignitaries is not the only string to her bow, for Leyla has also appeared in the Tesco HTC advert recorded with Sheek Louch of the Lox, and has been featured on various mix tapes. Her debut EP Notes to Self has been released to much acclaim for the public and industry insiders alike and her most popular track to date Do Not Disturb has been on heavy rotation on both 1Xtra and Choice FM. hotel has beachfront and landscape views and each apartment is linked by walkways and landscaped gardens. It is also home to two luxury pools including an infinity pool and one of Cancun’s best restaurants serving authentic Mexican food.
cANCUN: mEXICO’S REDISCOVERED TREASURE
I can honestly say Cancun is the perfect destination to recharge your batteries. I fell in love with Mexico right there and then and at present I am currently looking at ways to get back to this beautiful country.
At our official first night beach party we are treated to a live set by illusionist Derren Brown and then its music and party time. But before all the entertainment began Sir Richard took to the mic to personally welcomes everyone to Cancun and tells us that ‘he is delighted to be here to celebrate Virgin Atlantic’s new route to Cancun. Mexico holds a special place in my heart and it is great to be here with all my family and friends’.
But before we said a reluctant goodbye to Cancun Virgin Atlantic had one more ace up their sleeve to make sure that I would not forget this trip in a hurry. For on my return back home I was upgraded to Virgin’s spacious Upper Class cabin. With flat beds, a dedicated hostess service, entertainment station and access to the onboard bar, pyjama’s and much more, it was a fitting way to end my time in paradise
He added ‘Cancun is one of the top five long-haul leisure destinations for UK travellers, and as a market leader in this area, we are pleased to be able to add this route to our network.”
Five Facts about Cancun 1) Before the city acquired its current name, Cancún was called Ekab, meaning ”Black Earth”. Cancún is the Mayan word for ”nest of serpents” or ”snake pit”.
Then it was party time and the Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays staff are going to great lengths to make sure all the guests are up and enjoying themselves after a few hours we make oiur excuses and leave as we are booked on the first excursion the very next day.
2) When Cancun was first developing in 1970, there were only three residents living there. Now there are over half a million people who call Cancun home. Can you imagine waking up to that beach every day?
We are off to the Ancient Mayan city of Tolum and this definitely is a must-see when you visit Cancun. With several Mayan temples to admire and explore. The site is located high up on a cliff looking over the second largest reef in the world, and the views are truly breath-taking. The Ancient Mayans were keen mathematicians, artists, linguists and astronomers (they famously predicted that the world is due to end this year) and guided tours around Sian Ka’an are available to learn more about their way of life and their legacy.
By Michelle Martin Picture the scene, you’re lying on a outdoor four poster bed on a beach that boasts white powder soft sand, it’s 80 degree’s in the shade and a waiter hands you an ice cool tequila, whilst relaxing, you take in the warm blue sea as it gently cascades into soft rippled waves. You’ve just realised that you are relaxing in paradise and it is not a dream – you have just experienced the idyllic wonder that is Cancun- welcome to Mexico.
Once seated in Virgin’s award winning Premium Economy cabin, we were all encouraged by their ever friendly cabin crew to start the flight with a huge Mexican wave and with drinks flowing, it was a massive Ola! As we were Cancun bound. In Premium Economy you are welcomed into a separate cabin and offered a beverage of your choice and then led to your seat which features enhanced ergonomics for extra support. You are given an amenity kit which holds all the essentials to have a comfortable flight, including, tooth brush, earplugs, eyeshades and socks. There’s a great choice of food on the flight and it’s all served on china plates, with stainless steel cutlery and you are constantly topped up with refreshments. The entertainment was spot on. With over 50 movies to choose from I was spoilt for choice and you could watch any film of
4). Cancun’s beaches have white sand, which is made from crushed coral and is not hot to the touch. 5). Destination weddings are very popular in Cancun & the Riviera Maya region. There are approximately 46,000 weddings in the area, annually.
Then it was back to the Royal Hideaway to get ready for the ‘Dress to Impress party’. Here we were whisked away to an ancient ruin where Alexandra Burke headlined an evening of live music and quality entertainment.

By now we felt like one big happy family with Virgin staff and Sir Richard himself getting up on stage to dance to with the X Factor winner.
24/7Livelistings flew to Mexico to celebrate Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays newest route and we were invited as a VIP guest on its celebrity studded Inaugural flight. Sir Richard Branson and his staff pulled out all the stops to give us a very warm Mexican welcome from the moment we checked into this packed inaugural flight. Guests on-board included X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, Leigh Francis (AKA Keith Lemmon) Illusionist Derren Brown and 80’s comedy actress Cleo Roco’s and Daybreaks TV pundit Richard Arnold.
3) The second busiest airport in Mexico is Cancun’s international airport – with the most international traffic in the Latin American area. Cancun’s airport has 2 runways that can be used simultaneously and its control tower is the tallest in Latin America (the 18th tallest in the world)

Then it was off to bed ahead of our final day of excursions. There was a choice of either Zip Lining in the Mexican Jungle or the once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with sharks.
On landing we were greeted by a traditional Mariachi Band and Sir Richard, decked in traditional Mexican Robes had a photo call on the red carpeted wing to officially welcome the flight onto Mexican soil with singer Alexandra Burke whom he lifted into his arms and was flanked by two Virgin Atlantic air hostesses armed with both the Mexican and British flag.
Now seeing as I am not a strong swimmer (I cant swim!) I opted for what I thought was the least scary of the two Zip Lining. How wrong was I! Xplor excursions is a must for thrill seekers, it’s an adventure park that offers 4 different adrenalin filled activities which are Zip lines, Quad driving, rafts and swimming inside underground rivers. A must for anyone who likes highoctane activities.
Not to be outdone fellow guest comedian Keith Lemmon stormed the wing and attempted to lift the enigmatic media tycoon off the ground in a similar pose and ended up in a crumpled heap on top of the laughing 61 year old.
After scaring myself half to death we return for a final night of partying. It’s an all white affair held at one of Cancun’s most opulent and luxury holiday resorts.
Then we were whisked off to what was going to be home for the next four nights. One thing Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays do and do very well is luxury accommodation, they offer some of the most luxurious and opulent resorts in their catalogue and we were settling in one of Cancun’s finest. The Royal Hideaway is an adults only all inclusive resort situated on Riviera Maya, it’s a 5* resort that boasts exclusivity and a picture perfect setting. It’s the ultimate retreat if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. This Idyllic
Rosewood Mayakoba is a popular celebrity haunt it’s a resort that comprises of cabins, complete with their own private butler, which are situated on a lagoon. You need to take river taxi ride to get to the hotel’s Palapa Lounge, an open air-dining venue of which the final night of partying was taking place. And it is here that we said a very reluctant goodbye to Cancun, as it was our final night in Mexico. Cancun is beautiful. Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays sure no how to make their customers feel special and made sure that this trip was an unforgettable experience. 41

24/7FITNESS MY BIG FAT SLIMMING
DIARY
24/ 7Live Editor Michelle Martin charts her quest to lose weight in time for the summer. The summer is officially here and my quest to lose weight for this time of year seems to have hit a wall. Not even the prospect of a family wedding and a trip abroad has kept the momentum going. I’m finding any excuse not to train and my bad eating habits have slowly crept back into my life.. It doesn’t help that it’s been the hottest July in nearly seven years. Who really wants to pound the streets in 80-degree heat and endure themselves to an extensive workout when they could be enjoying the sun. But fitness my instructor Sweeney is having none of it and can tell when I. trying to make excusing as to why I cant train and has subsequently turned into a hard taskmaster. Gone are the days when I could complain of aches and pains to get out of doing a set of sit-ups. Now he just ignores me, shouts louder and makes me do an extra set for moaning. Sometimes I feel like I really hate him, continually cursing the day that I asked him to help me get fit. We have taken the 5k walk up a notch, Sweeney has got me jogging a small portion of the way, something I hate very much but, as he keeps reminding me if I don’t push myself, I wont see a change and all the exercising will be in vain. The first time we did the jog, I was sick, and I cursed him out again. I threatened to give him a pasting when we did the boxing part of the session. He just laughed, I swear the guys a sadist. He has taken to timing everything now, from how long it takes us to do the walk, how long the sets are and how long we box for. Then there’s the skipping something of which I simply cannot do. I’m fine for the first minute but as soon as I catch on the rope, I lose momentum completely and only skip for about 30 seconds at a time. I get so frustrated that I cant skip that I try to avoid it all together, but as he keeps reminding me its one of the best ways to lose weight and forces me to continue. Boxing is still the highlight of the session, I love the raw aggression, I love the combinations and I love the discipline of the sport. My ultimate aim is to be able to go a full 3 minutes with Sweeney, when I get the combinations down right he as promised to buy me a mouth guard and head guard and he said we can have a good bout! I another thing is the warm up and warm down. I just don’t stretch enough; Sweeney has warned me that if I don’t stretch properly before and after our sessions I will do myself an injury. But as much as I moan and complain after each session I feel a sense of achievement and know that the ultimate goal is just around the corner, its just about getting my MOJO back. When it comes to weight loss I seem to have plateaued. And that is 44
very frustrating, but Sweeney has very little sympathy because I have not made a drastic change to my diet. For many the summer is great to shed the pounds but for me it’s been an absolute nightmare. For the past month the invites to BBQ’S have been coming thick and fast! And BBQ food is my weakness, there is nothing like a burger, n ribs on a hot summers day I always put a bit of side salad on my plate but to be honest its there as garnish! The worst thing about a good BBQ’s is that they go on all day and without realising, you can literally end up eating your whole body weight in food. I’m still not confident enough to reveal my weight as yet but The truth will be revealed but the truth will be revealed very soon next month I will reveal before and after pictures and you guys can let me know if its paying off. Until then wish me luck with the training see ya!
24/7SPORTS PROFILE: Fabian Collymore
and three of the days I do two sessions a day. My training involves lots of repetition of 200metre runs so I can get the muscle memory for the event that i am aiming for
you not wanting to do it and putting in the work to do it.
HAVE MANY RACES HAVE YOU COMPETED IN? I have been competing in racing since I was 15 so thats about 12 years now and I have taken part in between 200 - 300 races.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT STATE OF ATHLETICS? The current state of athletics is good it could be better without the negative press about drug cheats but there’s great things going on in the sport at the moment .
WHAT TITLES AND ACHIEVEMENTS DO YOU HAVE? I’ve won sliver medals in 100m 200m in the uk Bedford trail and then got selected to compete for Great Britain, but now I have changed over to compete for barbados thought parentage.
WHO IS YOU FAVOURITE ATHLETE AND WHY? My favourite athlete is my training partner levi reid because we are training to reach the top of the sport some day we are tired but we push each other to get the best out of each others.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST SPORTING MEMORIES? In terms of victories it was probably one against Christian Malcolm in 2004.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF ATHLETICS FOR YOU? The most rewarding part of racing is the victories at the end of each race and obviously the prize money helps. The victories are always good the loosing- you can learn more from the loosing then actually winning so in some aspects it can also help when you do lose.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST SPORTING AND RACING EXPERIENCE? My worst and most embarrassing racing experience has only just happen to me this year in 2012, I warmed up for my race as normal got to the start line and did my last sprint out of the blocks and one of the starting officials walked across my lane, and I smashed right into him knocking him down and injuring myself having to miss the race and having to miss two weeks of training.
WHAT DO YOU DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF TO RELAX? I See my family, friends, girlfriend and probably just go for a massage- bit of ps3 and personal train a few clients of mine to get fitter. WHAT WOULD YOU IMPROVE OR CHANGE IN ATHLETICS? Bring it back to the old rule each person can false start once and still be in the race.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY INJURIES? I have been injured a few times in my track and field career. A normal injury for me is hamstring tear or pulls. At first I used to be affected by it all but now I know how to deal with the injury.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN THE SPORT? The best advice I would say is train smart and specific to what event you are training for. Listen to all the advice you get given and take all bits from different people never limit you. When your training makes sure you work very hard because hard work always pays off.
HOW DO YOU VIEW GOVERNING OFFICIALS WITHIN YOUR SPORT AND DO YOU THINK THEY ARE STRICT ENOUGH? BOA and IWA are trying the best they can at the moment in terms of performance enhancing drugs’. They are trying there best, and every year the amount of people getting tested is coming down so i guess their doing their best to clamp down. –the best thing to do is to listen to your coach ‘cos he or she has got the best advice for you.
By Gavin Peters The 2012 London Olympics was a memorable and highly successful sporting occasion, especially for Team GB. On the back of our Olympic team spurred the way for many athletes to want to achieve more within their individual sports and one day hope that they too may become winning Olympians. Here at 24/7 Live we decided to profile a London born, rising athlete Fabian Collymore and get a little insight into the world of Athletics.
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE A COACH, AND HOW THEY IMPACT YOU? I would say its 50/50- essentially the coach does do a lot but if you haven’t got the motivation and the dedication that you need then its just gonna be a one way street, the coach wanting it for you and
Athlete: Fabian Collymore Discipline: Athletics (Running) Achievements: Won sliver medals in 100m, 200m in the UK Bedford trial. Selected for Great Britian, now runs for Barbados HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AN ATHLETE? Yes, I have always wanted to be an athlete- and the reason why I have is because my dad was an athlete when he was younger and he always use to tell me about the times he use to run and I basically just wanted to fulfil my potential and beat his times and that was my first and main aim.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? My motivation is definitely my family and friends- they motivate me and i also motivate myself-just to prove them right that i am doing it for a good reason.
