X FACTOR RETURNS MEL B JOINS THIS YEARS JUDGING PANEL 1

EDITORSNOTE Hello,

And it’s a warm welcome back! What a month August was, we partied hard and got drenched at Carnival, but it was worth it as Londoners really know how to put on a great show rain or shine and they reinforced the notion that Notting Hill really is the best street carnival in Europe. Our features editor Gavin to a mini break to beautiful Barcelona, make sure you read his profile outlining what the city has to offer. We also took a road to trip Mercedes Benz World in Chertsey to meet the gorgeous Bridget Kelly who invited us to an intimate evening where showcased new tracks from her latest album All or Nothing. This month we also introduce the newest member of the team nutrition and fitness expert Paul Cheesman aka Mr Powerful, who speaks candidly about his past battles with fitness and healthly living and the events that have led him become a fitness and nutrition fanatic. We get up close and personal with Olympic Gold medallist Anthony Joshua, who talks excitedly of his eagerly anticipated bout this month in Manchester as a pro. This month we also say goodbye to the comic legend that was Robin Williams, whose shock suicide is a poignant reminder that depression is an illness that affects as all. Sleep tight, Mork, Mrs Doubtfire, Jack and Dr Sean Maguire, you truly was one of the great ones. Until next month. Take care.

Karrueche Tran pregnant?

Mike GLC: ‘Tulisa betrayed me”

Social media has been awash with rumours that Chris Brown’s on/off girlfriend Karrueche Tran might be pregnant. The 25 year old took to instagram to post a romantic photo of their date night along with the caption ‘damn near 5 years and this woman is still putting up with my s**t. need to have this baby and stop playing! Lol! My WCW’. This post has led many to speculate that the model may be pregnant. The couple are definitely at the on stage of their relationship as Karrueche recently nominated Chris as her ‘man crush Monday’ recently saying ‘we love, we laugh, we fight…its complicated and I cant explain it but its not for you to understand but it’s my MCM”

Rapper Mike GLC has spoken out at Tulisa’s lack of support since the collapse of her drugs trial last July. The rapper was facing a lengthy spell in prison for supplying £820 worth of cocaine to the ‘fake Sheikh’ in part of a sting for a Sunday Newspaper in May last year. Speaking exclusively to Heat Magazine, he said that ‘she [Tulisa], ruins peoples lives’ and while Tulisa went on a PR offensive with a tell– all documentary on her ‘year from hell’ and revealing that she would be returning to X Factor as Louis Walsh’s guest at Judges’ Houses – Mike was left with nothing. ‘I feel betrayed’, admits the one time best friend of the star ‘she was like my little sister, and she’s left me with nothing. I don’t hate her – I’m just disappointed at how she’s treated me. I lost my business, my home, my family. I was loyal to Tulisa. She has done nothing to help me when I needed it the most. The rapper also claims that the documentary is not a true representation of the singer stating that ‘he’d never met that person in the documentary’ adding. ‘I’ve never met her in my life. Her family aren’t the closest thing in her world and then suddenly she’s calling her mum. The “poor me” act – she wasn’t going to prison, so what about poor me?

Jennifer Lopez: ‘I don’t whore around’ The star has speaking on the hit US chat show Chelsea Lately and exclusively revealed that… she doesn’t whore around…”I’ve dated younger guys and older guys.” Revealed the I’m into you singer, ‘I dated one younger guy. They are mostly 6

my age. I mostly go for a connection with a person. I don’t really plan things out, they just happen. I’m not one to like whore around and stuff like that’s not my thing’. TMZ reported that singer was spotted in a car with her ex boyfriend Casper Smart recently – and dicked for cover when they were spotted by paparazzi.

Oprah confirms Mike Epps will play Richard Pryor in new Biopic After much speculation Oprah Winfrey has confirmed that comedian Mike Epps will play Richard Pryor in a new biopic. Speculation was rife that the role would go to Marlon Wayans or Nick Cannon but Oprah confirmed his appointment by sharing an instagram photo of director Lee Daniels and Mike Epps sending social media into a frenzy. The comedian has thrown himself into the role and has started by perfecting the Richard Pryor look by recently rocking a thick moustache like that of the late comedians trademark look.

Rita Ora delays release of second album because she can’t use Calvin Harris tracks The singer was set to release her second album later this year, but according to reports it seems everything is on hold and the alleged delay is down to her ‘fraught’ relationship with her ex boyfriend Calvin Harris. Her sophomore effort reported to be released next year has a number of tracks she recorded with the producer and now it is claimed that Rita will not be using them on the album and is instead working with will.i.am and DJ Mustard. The 23 year old confirmed the rumours at the launch of her new fragrance in New York. The pair have a strained relationship since they split in June. The RIP singer told Heat radio’s Ryan Seacrest that she was unable to perform their song I Will Never Let You Down at the Teen Choice Awards last month. ‘For anybody who doesn’t understand how it works, he (Calvin) produced the song so he has to approve anything TV-wise…obviously he owns the rights to it and he didn’t approve the Teen Choice Awards’ After the awards was aired Harris spoke out telling his fans, ‘you’ll only know 1 side to the story, because I choose not to talk to the papers about every aspect of my personal life. But just know I had a damn good reason”.

Poor Rihanna, the Bajan superstar has filed yet another restraining against an alleged stalker. According to reports the singer got a restraining order against a man who was seen lurking outside her Hollywood Hills home last month. Her security saw the man hanging around for nearly 4 hours and they believed he was casing the joint. When the man noticed the guard he fled, but was later captured by police who later arrested him on an unconnected vandalism charge. But once ar-

Jackie Chan: I’m ashamed of my son after his weed bust in China Rush Hour star Jackie Chan says he’s ‘very ashamed’ of his son Jaycee, recent drugs bust, claiming his 31-year-old son humiliated him and his family. Last month Chan’s son was caught in a huge drug crackdown with the police claiming that they found about 3.5 ounces of the green stuff in Jaycee’s Beijing home. So embarrassed at his sons recent arrest the actor recently penned an open letter, where he publically blasted his son and essentially said he had failed as a father. In the letter posted on his official website the Chan wrote ‘as a public figure, I feel ashamed, as his dad I’m very sad and disappointed. 24/7GADGETS BACK TO SCHOOL! FOR THOSE OF YOU SOME OF THE USEFUL

RETURNING TO SCHOOL GADGETS TO HELP YOU

COLLEGE OR GET THROUGH

UNIVERSITY CHECK OUT THE SCHOOL SEMESTERS...

GOOGLE CHROMECAST, AMAZON FIRE TV, FROM £79.00 Streaming devices which gives students access to online entertainment come in a range of guises, but my two favorites are Google’s Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV. Amazon connects your television set to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon instant video, as well as TV shows and films if you’re part of Amazon Prime, whereas Chromecast can also stream a variety of services, including YouTube and whatever is shown on your browser. I happen to prefer Chromecast due to its ease of use and cheap pricetag, and the plug-andplay device makes a valuable gift if you’re packing your kids off to college. MICROSOFT SURFACE 3 TABLET, FROM £580.00 If your student prefers the Windows platform on their mobile device, Microsoft’s 12-inch Surface 3 tablet, available in both entry and high-end versions, runs on Windows 8.1 and is lighter than its predecessors. It might not be the first tablet you would consider for a student -- considering its high price for a tablet -- but decent specs and a full HD 2160x1440 resolution make it a possible laptop replacement which will last for some time.

LIVESCRIBE 3 SMARTPEN, £91.00 The Livescribe 3 Smartpen is a modern piece of kit which should be in any back-to-school bag. Dubbed a ‘smart pen,’ the Livescribe 3 is equipped with a small infrared camera that digitizes the user’s notes when used in conjunction with the company’s specialist paper. What makes the gadget useful for those heading back to school is that these digital notes are beamed to your iOS mobile devices via Bluetooth -although Android support is expected soon -- where notes can be organized using apps such as Evernote. Especially useful when compiling revision notes.

THE MIGHTY MIC, FROM 42.00 Photojojo’s Mighty Mic is a bolt-on for your smartphone. Once plugged into the smartphone’s headphone jack, any footage you are recording will have improved, clearer sound -- and the mic also has a headphone jack of its own, which lets the user hear the recorded sound and adjust settings accordingly. For travel, nights out, dictating thoughts or for recording a lecture, this is a useful gadget. Used in conjunction with apps like Evernote or Dragon Dictation can also help keep your student more organized and productive. WD MYPASSPORT ULTRA 1TB PORTABLE HARD DRIVE, £57.00 Streaming devices which gives students access to online entertainment come in a range of guises, but my two favorites are Google’s Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV. 24/7GAMING

By Darren Lobban

The summer round up

IT’S BEEN A GOOD SUMMER FOR GAMES THIS YEAR, NORMALLY THE SUMMER GAMES ARE TERRIBLE OR THERE IS A SEVERE DROUGHT NO MATTER WHICH PLATFORM YOU CHOOSE. IN ALL HONESTLY THAT’S PROBABLY DUE TO THE INDEPENDENT GAMES COMPANIES WHO CAN SEEMINGLY CREATE MULTIPLE SMALL BUT EXCELLENT GAMES.

One of the games which has taken up a huge amount of my spare time is Rogue Legacy, Rogue Legacy looks like a simple 2D platform game from a bygone era...don’t let this sweet little game fool you because it’s a procedurally generated rogue like game that will kick you neatly in the crutch then punch you in the back of your neck. In Rogue Legacy you take on the role of a knight who has to conquer a castle and its surrounding areas (forest, dungeon etc) with enemies who can take you out in seconds, each time you die you get to choose from one of three heirs with their own unique (and sometimes hilarious) family traits. Any money you collected before you die can be used to purchase items or boost your statistics for your next play through. You always get a little further in each play session until you get that godly feeling on a truly impressive run and rack up large amounts of money. Rogue Legacy runs great on all three PlayStation formats and is cross buy and cross save, a special mention must go to the sound which is 8-bit- tastic! I have also been playing Ratchet and Clank trilogy on the PS Vita (it’s also out on PS3) and I’m glad to say it runs really well on the PS Vita and all three games in the trilogy look excellent too. Unfortunately there were a few bugs that

I came across in the digital version I played, the first was that at some random points the background music would just stop for a while and this happened on the first two games but not part 3?!?. The second niggle I had was that to save space they compressed some of the cut scenes a bit too much and it really looks bad compared to the rest of the in game graphics. My third complaint straight up pissed me off and that’s the lack of R2&R1 buttons which would normally be used for strafing but since that is not an option you have to use the back touch pad which is rubbish. Why they wouldn’t let me map that function to the d-pad is a god damned mystery to me! It doesn’t effect the third game which has auto strafing.

The next game i will pick up and play is Counter spy, Counter spy see’s you take the form of a secret agent trying to stop two superpower’s from launching nuclear weapons at each other. I will give my impressions on that next month. Well that’s it form me for now, I’m off to troll fanboys on random forums and watch lots of wonderful ice bucket challenge videos on YouTube. Hurrah!

Of Logos and Lawyers It’s been an interesting week in City Land – work has been ticking over. There are less people scurrying around the office pretending to be busy, so I assume that everyone must be on holiday or just hiding from me…It’s been a quiet week on the startup front as well, so I have turned my attention to the other bits and pieces surrounding Operation Startup. The last few days have been all about the logos and lawyers. Those amongst you who know me well can attest that I do not possess a single artistic bone in my body. Creating a logo is a job that I outsourced to a new member of the SPM fold, who we shall call The Designer. The Designer was recommended to me through friends who know of her prowess in the logo/ sign design field.

Forty seconds into the conversation outlining her credentials, it was apparent that she has produced half of the advertising paraphernalia that mankind absorbs subliminally on a daily basis, and was more than suited to the task. It also became quickly apparent that The Designer does not possess the circadian rhythms that you or I work with. Emails of draft designs, colour schemes and suchlike were often delivered to my inbox between 3 and 4am. It was a useful insight into working with someone in a different time zone – or a small window into the life of an insomniac. The logo has been completed. The aim was to go for something which would appeal to guys, but wouldn’t alienate women; something which would give a view as to what the business is, but is not cringingly obvious. It’s been a hit with everyone who has seen it. Feeling inspired, I tried to add a little slogan to it (just underneath it, in italics) – that bit was deemed an instant fail – it was like Mrs Needham’s art class all over again.. I also engaged the services of a lawyer this week. I’ve noticed that lawyers tend to come in two forms : 1) The slippery fish, who agree with everything you say, regardless of whether it is contradictory (of known as Ambulance Chasers within the profession and are found to focus on the field of Personal Injury claims

2) The “deliberate talkers” who speak as if everything is being recorded for trial and one wrong word will result in someone getting the death penalty My counsel is firmly in camp 2. “Methodical” doesn’t even come close to describing how this guy tackles problems. Analysing issues down to an atomic level is definitely his forte, which bodes well for me. It’s interesting to observe that this sober, meticulous individual looks about 17, at best. I swear his voice was actually breaking during our first conversation. Either I’m in the company of a child genius or this guy drinks Oil of Olay by the pint. The Lawyer is currently using his microscopelike mind to build out the other elements of intellectual property protections that I need to put in place. The company logo will soon have a “TM” sitting proudly next to it, whilst we await Registered status to be endowed from the European distinctive mark gods. The Lawyer is also looking over my shareholding agreements and proposals.

As I can learn from the Winklevoss twins (http://www. bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13886534) I’d do well to ensure that any promises of equity shares/ownership rights to my gig should be encapsulated pretty early on. Not that I’m aiming to “Zuckerberg” anyone, of course...

Sheep or Unique

After I touched on SPX in last month’s article, it made memories come flooding back and I got all glassy eyed thinking of some old brands that aren’t really around anymore, or not in the way that they used to be. Whether it helps to evoke memories of yore for the older heads amongst you, or highlight a few brands that came and went in a blaze of glory in the late eighties and early nineties, for the youngers. This one is all about the Brands That Time Forgot…….

I’ll start off with my favourite brand from yesteryear, Travel Fox. This was a brand that was touted as a luxury trainer brand, with premium leathers which had a price tag to match that luxury feel. I distinctly recall Jazzie B from Soul II Soul wearing a pair that had a colourway that reflected the red, gold and green of Jamaica. I specifically remember them as I was at school doing a music class project on Soul II Soul and had drawn both the Funki Dread logo, along with a pair of Travel Fox. What I’d do to get my hands on a pair of those original Travel Fox (not the poor attempt at retroing them that turned up in Sports Direct) and my music report too. Everyone knows of a brand with the swoosh that hails from Oregon in the USA, but I bet you there isn’t too many people who can name another sneaker brand that comes from the same state? I’m not even that sure too many people even remember this brand, but Avia is the name and back in the day it held its own. So much so it had Scottie Pippen as an endor-

38

see. To give that some context, Pippen was a bit like Kevin Durant whilst the primary players were/are Michael Jordan and Lebron James. I remember a few pals having Avia in the early 90s and I even ended up with a pair myself, and that particular shoe ended up in some legal battle with that other Oregon player, about their 180 technology as Avia’s design employed ‘Cantilever technology’ that was deemed similar to Nike’s 180 degree air bubble. However it was Avia, that was suing Nike about stealing their idea. Unfortunately Avia became another brand that ended up in Sports Direct in a much lesser form, but for the sake of this article I’m now ignoring that Sports Direct even exist. What about LA Gear, you’ve got to remember them, right? The only trainer that the ‘other’ MJ ended up endorsing and one that had questionable technology including a light up midsole and a cumbersome equivalent to Reebok’s Pump innovation. Initially they were endorsed by a ‘baller as prominent as Mr Jordan back then, being Karim Abdul-Jabbar, albeit towards the end of his career, but eventually the brand became a bit of a joke. Sneaker heads may have been passing up on LA Gear but the general public were buying in to the brand, especially as they were happy to court musicians and celebrities like Belinda Carlisle and Jennifer Aniston, who opened the brand up to that vast expanse across the pond. Last up, is by far the most controversial and the only one, from the brands I’ve listed, that does not exist in any way anymore. That brand is Troop. I’m not sure whether a brand has captivated me as much as Troop did, which was made worse by the fact that a) I never owned a pair and b) the furore surrounding the brand. Troop wasn’t a performance sneaker, it was purely for the streets, or the stage. Not for the court or track. One of their endorsee’s was LL Cool J, who subsequently (and allegedly) went on to protest AGAINST the company for the fact that there was Ku Klux Klan links to the brand. The facts don’t seem to be out there, but one thing I do know is the brand was started by two Jewish brothers and a Korean guy, so make up your own mind. I also heard back then, that if you took the sole off a pair of Troop you would see KKK on the sole. I can tell you for a fact that was not the case, as I witnessed a school friend put the sole of a battered pair to a sanding machine in my CDT class to find nothing of the sort. I wonder if such a smear campaign could exist in this modern era?

SUMMER TIME BERRIES FOR SUPER HEALTH AND DELAYED AGEING!!!!

IT’S OFFICIALLY THE END OF SUMMER BUT IN THE SHOPS AND SUPERMARKETS THERE IS STILL AN OVER ABUNDANCE OF BEAUTIFUL JUICY BERRIES. DELICIOUS LOOKING STRAWBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES AND RASPBERRIES!

These are super tasty and locally grown, and these berries as part of a healthy diet can help you stay

healthier. Here is how they help and why.... LOCAL PRODUCE IS IMPORTANT .

Getting locally grown produce such as the berries mentioned above has the following benefits. They are left in the plant longer to further develop and fully ripen. This has the added benefit of hugely increasing the vitamins and mineral content of the berry giving you more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre and an even greater taste. Buying fresh fruit out of season and of non local produce reduces the amount of vitamins and minerals and other benefits by harvesting the produce to early... Generally when it’s still green and under developed. This is then shipped half way round the world to get to you ripe... But sadly it loses many of its nutrients in the process. Berries are a good source of carbohydrates as part of a full balanced high protein meal. The sugars or carbohydrates in the berries due to the fibre content create a GL (glucose load, similar to glucose index) measure that is very efficient at storing the carbohydrates in the liver. The carbohydrates stored in the liver are the only stored carbohydrates in

the body that can fuel the brain. This leads to greater concentration, better brain function and with a high omega 3 and high vitamin diet means a better memory too.

HOW VITAMINS THEY BENEFIT US Vitamins and minerals play a huge role in our daily lives, the help create hormones that control processes within the body such as fat loss, energy production, muscle repairs and even how we feel when we wake up. Vitamin C keeps us healthy by boosting our immune system, helping us utilise collagen to build new cells (slowing and reversing the ageing process... Omg) , and also works as a universal antioxidant.

ANTIOXIDANT... I’VE HEARD OF THOSE... Ok to understand what an Antioxidant is we have to know what an oxidant is... this is also known as a free radical. Oxygen has the chemical symbol of O2. This means for it to be a stable stand alone oxygen molecule it has to have 2 oxygen particles... A free radical or oxidant is O1. This means

it is unstable and is actively searching for another O1 to make itself and O2 and then become stable. What it does to get this O1 is steal it from another O2. We have lots of O2 in our body so the O1 takes an O1 from elsewhere in our body and that place that has had the O1 taken breaks down and dies. This is known as oxidative breakdown and is the reason why apples go mouldy and food goes bad, also known as the ageing process. Antioxidants are utilised in the body by sacrificing themselves to the O1 so it doesn’t use an O2 from our body. This will reduce the amount of ‘’oxidative breakdown’’ lowering the amount of cell breakdown or cell death and therefore slowing the ageing process.... Omg! So eat your berries, be healthy, stay young and support your local farmers!

Choose one that contains more electrolytes than sports drinks and can hydrate your body quickly. Things You’ll Need • Water • Sport drinks • Ginger ale • Children’s rehydration solution DRINKING AND ON YOUR FEET ALL DAY (CRAMPS) WHAT SHALL I DO Many people experience cramps when they sleep, which can be associated with excruciating pain. Athletes, on the other hand, tend to develop muscle cramps when they are exercising. A wide variety of factors can cause muscles to contract painfully. The following are common causes: · A mineral deficiency involving potassium, calcium, magnesium and/or sodium. · Dehydration, which can occur in athletes when they exercise hard in hot conditions and do not drink sufficient liquid. · Excessive intake of fluid (drinking 2-3 litres or more of water in addition to your daily fluid intake) - this can ‘wash’ the above-mentioned minerals out of your body and lead to cramps. · Lack of fitness - well-trained muscles are less likely to cramp. Although this mainly applies to athletes, people who are not fit and get too little exercise often develop cramps because their muscles are so poorly used. · Wearing tight constrictive clothing, especially in bed. Try to wear comfortable, loosely fitting clothes at all times (be comfortable, rather than stylish if you are plagued by cramps), as constriction of the blood supply to muscles can cause them to contract painfully. Minerals that play a role There are four minerals that can influence how a muscle contracts, namely calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium.

a) Calcium Most people are not aware of the fact that calcium is essential for the normal contraction of muscle tissues, including those of the heart. Patients with extremely low blood calcium levels can develop a condition called tetani where the muscles fibres contract continuously. When this occurs, heart failure can ensue. Fortunately, such severe calcium deficiencies are rare, but on the other hand, sub-optimal calcium intakes are relatively common, especially in teenagers and young women who cut out calcium-rich foods like milk and dairy products because they are afraid of gaining weight. If you hardly drink any milk and never eat yoghurt, or cheeses, you may well be inclined to a subclinical calcium deficiency and will need to top up on these foods or take a calcium supplement (Calcium Sandoz or Caltrate or Berroca Calcium, for example). b) Magnesium Once again, outright magnesium deficiencies are relatively rare, but people eating a western diet that lacks fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes and unprocessed grains and cereals, may well have inadequate intakes. If you suffer from muscle cramps, you can try increasing your intakes of the foods listed above (especially green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli) or take a calcium and magnesium supplement (taking these two minerals together improves their mutual absorption). Â c) Potassium Potassium is one of the most abundant minerals available in common

foods and most people should not develop a deficiency. However, eating minimalistic or monotonous diets to lose weight or cutting out all fruits and vegetables and grains and cereals, can cause a potassium deficiency. Drinking too much water can also deplete your potassium reserves. The easiest way of ensuring that you have abundant potassium is to eat five or more servings of fruit and/or vegetables a day. If you think you lack potassium, buy a variety of fresh or frozen vegetables and boil them lightly in chicken stock to make a delicious, fat-free soup that is loaded with potassium. If you have a juicer, make an apple or grape and carrot drink to boost your potassium intake. Potassium supplements should preferably only be taken if your potassium levels have been checked by a medical doctor and have been found to be low. Potassium supplements should also only be taken under the supervision of your doctor, because a number of medications can influence the potassium levels in the body - for example, the so-called ‘potassium-sparing diuretics’ prevent loss of potassium from the body. If you take a potassium supplement, you could develop hyperkalaemia (excess potassium in the blood), which is also harmful. So rather eat fruit and vegetables and whole grains to top up on potassium, unless your doctor has prescribed supplements like ‘Slow-K’ for you. d) Sodium

Most people on a western diet, which is based on processed foods, won’t develop a sodium deficiency. However, drinking too much water, sweating a lot, and certain imbalances in kidney function can lead to sodium depletion, which in turn can cause cramps. If you do a lot of exercise in hot weather or if you are an athlete training hard, you need to make sure that you are getting some sodium in your diet. Luckily, most sports drinks like Energade and Powerade contain sodium to assist with hydration, so drink some while you exercise and during the recovery phase. People who develop cramps and do not eat any salt or use salt substitutes (which are rich in potassium) should consider that they might have a sodium deficiency. Try adding a pinch of table salt to your food for a week or two to see if this alleviates the problem. Other tips on preventing cramps · Get as fit as possible - the fitter you are, the fewer cramps you will develop. · Drink sufficient liquid to prevent dehydration, but don’t overdo your fluid intake. · Follow a low-fat diet to prevent clogged arteries as poor blood circulation to the limbs can cause cramps. · Do stretching exercises every day, especially with the muscles that tend to cramp. · Wear loose, comfortable clothes, especially at night Be safe and drink wisely!

ROBIN WILLIAMS

(July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014) 56

Robin McLaurin Williams was an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker. Starting as a stand-up comedian in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, he is credited with leading San Francisco’s comedy renaissance. Williams was bullied badly during childhood for being chubby and would often spend much of his time playing alone in the family home to avoid his tormentors. Eventually, he conquered his overweight label though by joining the wrestling and tracks teams, and he soon learned he could make the other children laugh as a way of gaining respect from them. Williams practiced stand-up in his spare time and he soon realized, after taking advice from a friend, that comedy rather than acting was his best way forward. He promptly left Juilliard for Los Angeles and ended up working on the West Coast comedy circuit. In 1977, Williams won a spot on The Richard Pryor Show but his big break was just around the corner. Garry Marshall, creator of the hugely popular TV show Happy Days was planning an ‘out-there’ episode where the Fonz would be abducted by aliens. At the auditions, Marshall asked Williams to sit down but he instead sat on his head and was instantly employed. Playing Mork from the planet Ork, Robin was a sensation so much so that a new show was created for him – Mork and Mindy. The show was a hit, earning Williams his first Golden Globe win in 1979 - Mork’s greeting, ‘Nanu-nanu’, became a worldwide catch-phrase. Disney’s Aladdin in 1992 was a landmark in establishing the talents of Williams as a voice actor in his role of the Genie, the majority of which he improvised and ad-libbed. He played numerous memorable film roles, both comedic and dramatic, and after three previous nominations won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in Good Will Hunting. While his career was taking off, Williams faced many personal challenges. He developed a drug and alcohol problem while working on the sitcom Mork and Mindy, and would struggle with addiction for more than two decades. He also became involved in several tumultuous romantic relationships; while married to actress Valerie Velardi, he was involved with other women. Williams and Velardi ultimately divorced in 1988. The following year, he married his son’s nanny, Marsha Garces. Despite personal setbacks, Williams continued acting. He appeared in the hit Penny Marshall drama Awakenings (1990), with Robert De Niro and Julie Kavner, and received his third Oscar nomination for his role as homeless man Parry in the 1991 redemptive drama The Fisher King. Tackling family friendly fare as well, he starred as a grown-up Peter Pan in Hook (1991) and provided the voice of the genie in Disney’s animated film Aladdin (1992). Williams starred in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Jumangi (1995) and Flubber (1997) as well. His more adult-oriented films also made waves, including The Birdcage (1996) and Good Will Hunting (1997). His performance as the psychiatrist in the latter project won him an Academy Award as best supporting actor. For the next few years, Williams took on a range of roles. He starred as the doctor who treated his patients with humor in Patch Adams (1998) and then portrayed a Jewish man in Germany during World War 57

II in Jakob the Liar (1999). Based on a work by Isaac Asimov, Bicentennial Man (1999) gave Williams the opportunity to play an android who develops human emotions. And he returned to voice acting as Dr. Know in A.I.: Artificial Intelligence in 2001. Williams poured his energy into his sold-out shows. But health problems would derail the comedian in March of 2009. Several months into his fast-paced tour, Williams began experiencing shortness of breath. The complications led him to cancel performances and he ended up undergoing heart surgery. While Williams was recovering, the actor was once again seen playing Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. In November 2009, he starred alongside John Travolta in the Disney film Old Dogs. Williams again continued working on a number of different projects. He made guest appearances on TV shows like Louie and Wilfred. In March 2011 he appeared on Broadway as part of the original cast of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, with the show running until July. On the big screen, reprising his roles of Ramon and Lovelace from the 2006 original, he lent his voice to the 2011 animated sequel Happy Feet Two. He and graphic designer Susan Schneider also tied the knot that October. Williams had supporting roles in two 2013 projects: the romantic comedy The Big Wedding with Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton, and the Lee Daniels’ drama The Butler, where Williams portrayed Dwight D. Eisenhower. That year, Williams also announced his return to series TV. He co-starred with Sarah Michelle Gellar on the sitcom The Crazy Ones, which debuted in the fall. Set in an advertising firm, the show featured Williams and Gellar as father and daughter. The show was canceled after only one season. Then in 2014, Williams starred as disgruntled Henry Altmann in the film Angriest Man in Brooklyn. On August 11, 2014, the 63-year-old comedian was found dead in his California home.
