ften referred to as the magical East, Southeast Asia is definitely spellbinding in many ways. Out of more than 1,000 UNESCO-listed historical and natural sites all over the world, 38 are located in the region. Many more are actually under review and even more are to be submitted in the near future as new jewels are discovered or uncovered every year. And while Southeast Asia cultures, histories and landscapes are increasingly recognized for their unique value for mankind, the 10 countries of the ASEAN community recently decided to organise themselves in order to improve their way to preserve -and maybe rehabilitate if needed- their natural and historical heritage, while making it properly accessible to the world. Initiated by a Thai public organization named DASTA (Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration), the 1st ASEAN World Heritage Summit was held on 2-4 August 2018 in UNESCO World Heritage site, Sukhothai, Thailand with more than 100 stakeholders and ASEAN professionals in the field of heritage management, culture, art and tourism who shared their experience and best practices to determine how to strengthen the protection of ASEAN sites and how to mitigate the impacts from tourism growth in the areas. By traveling these wonderful but often fragile sites, one may help local communities to strengthen themselves, but on the condition we do it wisely and respectfully. Pierre QUEFFELEC

PHUKET TOURISM RUSSIA ROADSHOW @ PHUKET, THAILAND Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization invited tourism businesses in Phuket to a roadshow in Moscow, Kazan, and St. Petersburg to meet local representatives from 125 Russia’ s leading tour companies on 14-16 August 2018. The roadshow was the cooperation between government authorities and private sector in Phuket and Tourism Authority of Thailand, Moscow Office, with the aim to attract 1.5 million Russian visitors in 2018. Mr. Phumikit Raktaengam, the President of Phuket Tourist Association, pointed out that Russian tourists love the sea, sun, and the beaches in Thailand, and with chartered flights from 25 Russian cities to Phuket, it’s easier to travel to the island. In the future, the association will extend its reach to Siberia and Far Eastern Russia to attract more potential visitors. Mr. Phot Hanphol, Minister at Royal Thai Embassy, Moscow, Russia said “Tourism business owners in Russia are always interested in Thailand’s tourism market. From 2015, more Russian tourists come to Thailand and the number of Russian tourists is expected to reach 1.5 million in 2015. Russians are impressed by unique Thai culture, as well as the weather. STANDING AT THE TOP VOLCANOS MOUNT KELIMUTU Located in Flores, Indonesia, this volcano is known mostly for what might seem like nature playing tricks on the eyes. Close to the summit of the volcano there are three crater lakes, each of which changes color due to the volcanic activity below. Indonesia’s tourist board tells us the lakes are now changing hues of green, blue and red, although just over the last few years they have turned black, white, turquoise and brown.

This cartoonish geographical phenomenon still baffles geologists today. Located in the Bohol province of the Philippines, looking over the landscape of brownish bumps one might think giant moles had been digging in the vicinity. In all, there are 1,260 of these hills (chocolate-colored only in the dry season) spread over around 50 km.

MUI NE The natural wonders here are the surreal-looking red and white sand dunes, something you might not expect to see in this part of the world. The dunes are easy to get to from the small fishing town of Mui Ne in the south-central Bình Thuan Province of Vietnam. Lots of activities are on offer, such as driving ATVs through the dunes or seeing them from above from a hot-air balloon.

KOMODO ISLAND As you can imagine many visitors to the island are coming to see the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon. But the island is also home to one of the world’s few pink beaches. The bustling marine life also attracts scuba divers from all over the world.

KOH RONG ISLAND Cambodia’s second largest island could be called its jewel in the ocean. Sitting just 25km off Sihanoukville’s coast, visitors are afforded the luxury of over 40km of quiet beaches as well as a string of small villages. KUANG SI FALLS Located less than 30km from Luang Prabang, the falls comprise of a series of shallow azure-colored pools, fed by a network of small falls. Depending on rainfall, swimming is not always recommended, but still, the scene is quite ethereal.

THI LO SU This is Thailand’s giant in terms of cascades, standing almost 300 meters tall and 450 meters wide. Visitors can either take a rubber boat down the Mae Klong River and walk a further 10km, or trek through the jungle for about 25km. It’s located in Tak Province, in the northwest of the country.

We should tell you that the staircase down to the lagoon can be tricky to navigate, so young children or older people may have some problems.

LAKE INLE The freshwater lake in the Shan State of Myanmar recently made the list of World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The lake is home to many ethnicities living in strings of villages that surround the lake, or in the lake on top of stilts. The largest ethnicity is the Intha, the “children of the lake”, who can sometimes be seen performing the art of legrowing – a way of fishing stood on one leg that is thought to go back to the 12th century.

There is much to explore in the area, and one might even catch a freshwater dolphin swimming in the many pools beneath the falls.

The province of Phang-Nga, in southern Thailand, is situated directly above the island of Phuket.

isitors arriving by air touch down at the Phuket International Airport, and then drive due north—most often heading towards Khao Lak, which offers 30 km of Andaman Sea coastline and dozens of amazing 4 and 5 star hotels scattered along a series of dazzling white sandy beaches. The west coast of Phang-Nga is also known as the gateway to the Similan Islands, one of Thailand's main scuba diving destinations, famed for its reefs, variety of pristine corals and diversity of marine life.

However, there’s more to Phang-Nga province than just beautiful beaches and worldclass diving. The dynamic eastern coastline offers panoramic views of Phang-Nga Bay, where massive limestone islets rise dramatically out of the turquoise waters. The most famous of the islets, a 20m-tall rock called Ko Tapu, is found in Khao Phing Kan. More commonly known as James Bond Island, it was featured in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun, and still attracts endless hordes of selfie-taking tourists on a daily basis.

A much more unique and interesting way to soak in the natural beauty of the PhangNga Bay rock formations is to drive up to the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint in Takua Thung District. The cost of admission is 90 baht, which includes round trip transport from the car park up the very steep rugged mountain road towards the summit, which sits 1,316m above sea level. Once you arrive you’ll be greeted by stunning vistas of the bay, the limestone karst formations, and the surrounding countryside. There’s even a seafood restaurant here if you want to stay for a meal.

For those wanting some closer contact with Phang-Nga’s many undulating rivers, several local operators offer exotic bamboo rafting expeditions through lush forests and past jungle waterfalls. Unfortunately, seasonal rains affect the water levels and safety conditions, so adverse weather conditions can limit or even temporarily close these tours. A safer, year-round bet is a voyage along the Sang-neh River, in the Takua Pa district, which is known locally as The Little Amazon. For a fee of 800 baht per boat, passengers board inflatable kayaks— two at a time, plus driver—and embark on a leisurely paddle down a meandering shaded waterway, passing the snarled roots of 100-year old Banyan trees. Meanwhile, wildlife watchers can keep their eyes peeled for snakes, lizards, colourful birds, and the occasional monkey.

Along with its natural wonders, Phang-Nga province is also courting active travellers with events such as the recent inaugural L’Etape Thailand by Le Tour de France, which attracted approximately 1,500 amateur and professional cyclists. On Sunday October 21st, 2018, hundreds of flag waving fans were on hand to cheer on the participants—a mix of young and old, Thai and foreign, male and female—who were competing for a chance to win one of the official Tour de France prize jerseys by completing either the 70km, or the full 140km course. The race culminated in the historic city of Ta Kua Pa, where smiling spectators were on hand to cheer the competitors as they cycled over the finish line. At the event’s official press conference, Mr. Tanes Petsuwan, the TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, confirmed that Thailand has signed up to host the L’Etape Thailand by Le Tour de France race for a period of three years. The 2019 race is already confirmed to take place once again in Phang-Nga province, while the 2020 race location is still unconfirmed.
