hailand’s reputation for friendly service, along with its wide range of accommodations and overall value for money, has turned it into a destination of choice for brides and grooms, not to mention newlyweds celebrating their nuptials with a heavenly honeymoon. Couples from all over the world are enticed by the idea of a relaxing beach holiday, or an exotic locale to spend some time discovering fascinating local culture, food, and customs. According to tourism experts, more than 100,000 marriage-minded travellers become husband and wife each year in Thailand, and another million or more will spend their honeymoon holidays here in the “Land of Smiles”. The reasons for Thailand’s popularity have to do with the fact that this country has all the elements needed to create absolutely unforgettable memories—the very thing a couple associates with their precious wedding day. The legendary quality of service that Thai people provide, along with their innate sense of hospitality, gives Thailand the edge when it comes to luring prospective brides and grooms. In addition, organizing a wedding in Thailand is generally cheaper than in most other countries in the world. In Thailand, luxury is affordable and competition amongst hotels and resorts for potential customers is fierce. Finally, in most of Thailand’s well known tourist destinations the hotels and resorts generally have one or more specialists on staff to look after almost every detail of both the wedding ceremony and the various receptions before and after. In fact, almost anything is possible if you request it; whether you prefer to have a chapel set up on the beach, or partake in a lavish ceremony wearing traditional Thai outfits. When it comes to wedding and reception destinations, Bangkok is an obvious choice, as the number of hotels, restaurants, and other event locations within the city is virtually endless. However, there are plenty of other great places across Thailand for staging your nuptials. Locations such as Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, and Phuket all cater to the destination wedding industry, but the Kingdom is huge and there are hundreds of lesser known alternative options as well. In many ways these secondary destinations provide couples with an even more intimate experience, whether for honeymoon getaways or wedding ceremonies. So, if the thought of a reception in a lush wine valley strikes your fancy, then consider the vineyards of Khao Yai. Or, if the image of an unspoiled beach wedding, with dramatic cliffs as a backdrop sounds good, then Krabi might be what you’re looking for. Finally, if you want something really out of the ordinary, sign up for the annual underwater group scuba wedding ceremony held in Trang province each and every Valentine’s Day. The event, entitled “Adventures to Ancient Lanna: Prehistoric Botanics with Grandpa Dinosaur”, celebrates the glory of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, by fulfilling Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s vision of increased environmental conservation, as well as sharing with visitors knowledge about botany in Thailand. There will be an exhibition of prehistoric plants, which served as food for ancient herbivorous dinosaurs, with interesting geological information presented alongside. Visitors will also have the chance to get up close and in touch with the display’s life-size animated dinosaurs. In mid-May, Bangkok Airways Public Co. Ltd, led by AM. Dechit Chareonwong, Vice President of Flight Operations (pictured, 3rd from right), together with a few of the airline’s pilots, welcomed to their fleet the brand-new ATR 72-600 aircraft. The new aircraft was delivered to Suvarnabhumi International Airport from the ATR manufacturer in Toulouse, France. This new-generation ATR-600 is equipped with state-of-the-art full-glass cockpit monitoring and control systems, and it also features high comfort layout seating for 70 passengers, with larger overhead luggage bins to enhance travel convenience and contentment. The newly delivered airplane will be added to the services on domestic flights, including Sukhothai, Trat, Lampang, Samui (Surat Thani), Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai (Songkhla). Currently, Bangkok Airways’ fleet consists of 40 aircrafts; two ATR72500s, thirteen ATR72-600s, sixteen A319s, and nine A320s.

MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS AT THE PAI JAZZ & BLUES FEST 2019 (VOL.3) @ PAI, THAILAND The very first Pai Jazz & Blues Fest was created with the idea of bringing live jazz and blues music to the hip Thai mountain town of Pai, located just a few hours’ drive from Chiang Mai. Each year during the festival musical performances are held in a variety of settings in the heart of Pai, and this year’s event runs from the 5th to the 7th of July (the scheduled list of performers has yet to be announced). BACK-TO-BACK LANY CONCERTS AS PART OF THE MALIBU NIGHTS WORLD TOUR @ BANGKOK, THAILAND Formed in 2014 in Los Angeles, American indie pop band Lany have delighted their Thai fans by visiting Bangkok many times over the past few years. So when it was announced they’d be bringing their 2019 Malibu Nights World Tour to Bangkok, for an intimate show at the GMM Live House (at CentralWorld), the show sold out immediately. Thankfully a second show was added, which means the band will be performing in town on both July 29th and July 30th. HEMINGWAY’S SPRINGS BACK TO LIFE ON SUKHUMVIT SOI 11 In November of 2016 the, golden teakwood colonial-era mansion on Sukhumvit Soi 14 that was the original home of Hemingway’s was demolished to make room for a hotel project. It was a sad day for the bar’s loyal customers, but it was an even sadder day for the city’s history books, as this majestic, century-old, 2-storey terraced property was once home to dignitaries and ambassadors. The owners salvaged tables, chairs, and lamps from the original building, and meticulously recreated the rest, including custom-cutting wooden gables, and importing discontinued floor tiles from a warehouse in Spain. These loving touches give the new Hemingway’s—now on Sukhumvit Soi 11—a very similar look and feel to the original spot, where the street-facing ground level seating is enhanced by a soonto-be lush garden, while the 2nd floor portico offers relaxing sofa seating and refreshing outdoor breezes. Meanwhile, the bar areas inside are all shiny and new, with the promise of delicious food and daily happy hours—beer and wine from just THB 99, from 11am till 8pm (till 10pm Mon-Tues)—sure to lure back the faithful clientele that made the original Hemingway’s such a success. www.facebook.com/hemingwaybkk

The neighbouring city of Cha-am, to the north of Hua Hin, is also a fine seaside getaway spot, with excellent hotels, a slower pace, and much less crowds. One of the area’s must-see attractions is the gorgeous, all-wood Mrigadayavan Palace, built in the 1920s. This property served as a summer palace for Thai King Rama VI, and today visitors can stroll around the various royal buildings and the beautifully manicured gardens. There are many hotels in this region, including quite a few that have “Hua Hin” in their name even though they are technically within the boundary of Cha-am (Petchaburi province). Excellent wedding venue hotels include the Regent Cha-am Beach Resort, the historic Dusit Thani, the grand Sheraton Resort & Spa, and the 136-room Veranda Resort Hua Hin Cha Am. he island of Phuket is perfect as a setting for large-scale wedding celebrations, as well as intimate honeymoon getaways. The west coast, nicknamed the sunset coast, is where the most populous resort towns are located, and the majority of hotels along this scenic shoreline are located around the numerous small bays and white sand beaches. hiang Rai is Thailand’s northernmost province, and historic Chiang Rai city, situated in the Mae Kok (Kok River) basin, served as the first capital of King Mengrai’s Lanna kingdom (a memorial statue of this famous monarch is a revered city landmark). Meanwhile, the amusingly named Kok River serves as a Northern border to the town, and actually runs all the way up into the Shan State in Myanmar. Many people come to see Chiang Rai’s famous White Temple (proper name Wat Rong Khun), which is located about 13 km south of the city. Visitors are immediately dazzled by the sight of this blindingly white, intricately detailed structure, wholly conceived by Thai artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat. To enter the main temple visitors must pass through a pair of giant fangs, demon guards, and a lake of miserable hell-bound figures. Once inside, you’ll be surprised by one of the strangest temple murals ever painted. Opening hours are from 8am to 5pm daily and admission is free for Thais but THB 50 for non-Thais.

Another “colourful” Chiang Rai city spiritual site is Wat Rong Seur Ten, also known as the Blue Temple (for obvious reasons). It’s only a few years old, so it is still relatively unknown among tourists, but like the White Temple it is a photographer’s dream, with fantastic artwork and sculptures—designed by Phuttha Kabkaew, a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat—adorning every surface. Admission is free.

In stark contrast to the White Temple is Baan Dam, also known as the Black House, conceived and imagined by Thawan Duchanee, another visionary Chiang Rai-born artist. Located on the main road north of the city, it’s a series of Thai-style houses and temple-like structures, filled with Duchanee’s truly bizarre, surrealistic artwork. From macabre furniture made with bones, claws, and antlers, to erotic wooden sculptures, the collection offers a glimpse into the artist’s “unconventional” tastes. Open daily from 9am to 5pm, and admission is THB 80.

For a more family-friendly outing, visit Singha Park, also known as Boon Rawd Farm. This agro-tourism destination encompasses over 12.8 sq.km of fertile land to the southwest of the city, growing everything from tea to ornamental flowers. There’s a THB 100 tram tour that includes five stops: fish feeding station with white swans; tea plantation; tea house; a small zoo with giraffe, zebras, and oxen; and an adventure zone with a zipline ride (THB 300), adventure rope course, rock climbing, and bike rentals (THB 150 per hour). Another fun family-friendly attraction is the Mae Fah Luang Botanical Gardens on top of Doi Tung mountain. Along with lots of beautiful flowers visitors can now go on the exciting new Tree Top Walk & Zipline experience. The 295-metre long jungle walkway dangles 30 metres above the ground, and the course ends with a zipline ride back to the flower gardens. Finally, if you were touched by the 2018 saga of the Wild Boars Thai soccer team trapped in Tham Luang Cave, you can visit the scene of this worldwide drama at Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park. At this time visitors are still not allowed to enter the cave, so the entrance is only visible from behind a fence. There’s also an information centre that tells all about the rescue operation, and a memorial statue of the former Navy SEAL who died during the rescue.

or travellers in Chiang Rai wanting to visit Myanmar, the Mae Sai border crossing is about an hour’s drive from Chiang Rai city. Public vans depart from the bus depot every 30 minutes (THB 50 one-way), but you can also hire a taxi to go there for around THB 600. Visitors needing a visa to enter Myanmar can get one quickly and easily online at evisa.moip.gov.mm, but you can also enter Shan State—the section of Myanmar located directly north of Chiang Rai—for 14 days without a visa, provided you leave your passport at the border and collect it upon your return. Visitors without visas must also secure an official guide, as well as official hotel-sponsored transport. After crossing the border you’ll find yourself in the city of Tachilek, a duty-free shopping zone with great discounted wines. From here it’s about a three-hour drive to Kengtung. available, but a private taxi is preferable, with prices starting at around US$65. Driving through Myanmar’s pristine Eastern Shan State you’ll be treated to a vista of rolling hills, undulating rivers, and verdant rice paddies, with crisp, clean air and moderate temperatures (due to the increased altitude). The city of Kengtung is referred to as the ‘Capital of the Golden Triangle’, a geographic region that encompasses sections of Northern Thailand, Eastern Myanmar, and Western Laos. Kengtung was once a hotbed for narcotics, as the majority of the world’s opium was grown in this region before the early 21st century. Opium was introduced here in the late 19th century by refugees from southern China known today as the various “hilltribes”, and visiting these ethnically distinct cultures in their forest communities is a huge part of the Kengtung’s tourism trade. There are half a dozen trekking routes in the area to choose from, visiting hilltribes such as the Akha, Lahu, Hmong, Lisu, and Wa (to name a few). However, be aware that hiring a local guide is mandatory. Kengtung is situated in a charming mountain valley, centered around Nongtong Lake, and has a population of 60,000. There are several historic temples here worth visiting, including Wat Ho Kong in the centre of town, and Wat Zom Khum, a hilltop temple with a massive gold pagoda and excellent panoramic views. A bit more out of the way is Wat Yang Gong, a beautiful teakwood temple with a Buddha statue whose robes are made of exquisite gemstones. Other hilltop religious monuments include the massive Standing Buddha, which overlooks Nongtong Lake and is visible from almost everywhere in town. Erected in 1994, this impressive statue stands right next to the town’s historic Catholic church, which was built 118 years ago.

The restaurant’s head chef Monthep Kamolsilp puts the focus on hyper-local innovative Thai cuisine, and each delectable item on his various tasting menus also includes the number of kilometres the main ingredient travelled to arrive on your plate. For us the brilliant 9-course Taan’s Tasting Menu (THB 2,100) began with some wonderfully spicy bite-size starters, the star of which was the Ranong spiny lobster cured in fish sauce, with frozen green chili and Chiang Rai caviar. Other memorably mouth-watering courses included the fermented organic pork from Nan province, served on a cylindrical block of wood, and the Wallago fish southern coconut curry. However, one signature dish that

always steals the show is the Khon Kaen grilled crispy pork belly with stir-fried young sataw beans. It's completely addictive! The delicious dessert finale consisted of an egg- and dairy-free pumpkin ice cream, paired with coconut, banana, and gold fleck, which once again amazed all at the table with its perfect balance of disparate flavours. And just like all the courses that came before it, the plating and presentation was visually stunning. For drinks with dinner Taan also offers a menu of highly inventive custom cocktails (average price THB 330), many of which incorporate Thai made spirits. he main tourist draw for the city of Dan Sai, in the Thai province of Loei, is the annual Phi Ta Kon festival. It starts with a cavalcade of local men strutting around town in outrageous, vibrantly coloured patchwork costumes; their faces shrouded behind ghost masks so ghoulish they might haunt your dreams. But perhaps more nightmare inducing are the massive wooden phalluses the men wave like unsheathed swords at passersby. The festival’s name roughly translates to “ghost with human eyes”, and the celebration is linked to the harvest season. The origins are traditionally ascribed to a story in which the Buddha, in one of his past lives as a prince, embarked on a long journey but was presumed dead after so much time had passed. Upon his return, the celebrations were so raucous they could “wake the dead”. Phi Ta Kon will take place this year from July 5th to the 7th, the dates having been set only a few

months in advance by the town’s local mediums. On the first day the residents invite protection from Phra U-pakut (the spirit of the Mun river), and the opening celebrations include games and races, followed by a long and lavish parade. Many in the procession are wearing the frightening masks, which are comprised of rice baskets attached to large pieces of coconut bark, which are then painted to resemble sardonically grinning monsters. The parade also includes dancers in traditional costume, musicians, and the “mudmen” who walk the parade route covered head to toe in dried mud. The second day incorporates a ‘Rocket Festival’—homemade rockets fired into the clouds to bring rains—plus costume and dance contests, and more parades. On the third and final day, the villagers listen to sermons from monks.
