etting and staying healthy is an issue we’re all concerned about these days and for most people trying to keep in shape, visiting a gym or fitness centre is part of their regular routine. However, there’s more to overall wellness than just having a toned physique and some dynamite abs. There’s also inner health, which can be defined by the food we eat, the poisons we purge, and the peace of mind we can acquire through meditation. When it comes to eating right, the biggest change a person can make in their eating habits is to switch – even for just a day or two out of the week – to a plant-based diet. Going full vegan, or just plain vegetarian, gives your system a break from fatty proteins and processed sugars and adds nutrients and fibre, plus a whole lot of other good things, to your system. In a similar fashion, detox programmes limit the amount of health-risk food we intake and have the added benefit of flushing out our clogged-up digestive tracts, and cleansing both our overworked lymphatic systems and our much abused internal poison control centres (first and foremost our always overtaxed liver). Of course, being creatures of habit we in the industrialized world often go through our daily lives getting fast food on the go, sleeping irregular hours, and neglecting our exercise regimes. It’s very easy to get caught up in this chaotic lifestyle, especially if you live in a big city, which is why most people choose to book some time off once in a while and purify themselves at wellness retreats and health-focused hotels that are more often than not located in gorgeous tropical settings… something Thailand has in abundance! In fact, wellness vacations have become a huge business in Thailand, and no matter which terrain you prefer – hillside or beachfront – there’s bound to be a spa, yoga, or detox retreat just right for you. Interestingly, many of these wellness retreats also put an emphasis on meditation, because often our brains are frazzled from living in today’s high-tech, device-driven, non-stop world. We need time just to meditate, breathe, and realign our inner selves, and stop fussing with our smartphones every 10 seconds. Thankfully, Thailand has dozens and dozens of these sorts of vitality vacation spots where travellers looking for this kind of inner and outer healing can find everything their mind and body is craving. SEE CHINA’S FAMOUS TERRACOTTA WARRIORS @ BANGKOK, THAILAND Get set Bangkok, as China’s renowned Terracotta Warriors are now ready for viewing at the city’s National Museum until December 15. ARTBOX LIFESTYLE MARKET FINDS A NEW HOME IN CHUVIT GARDEN Back in May, ArtBox – one of Bangkok’s most popular outdoor art and lifestyle markets – found a new, semi-permanent home in Chuvit Garden (aka: Chuvit Park), located between Asok and Nana BTS stations, at the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 10. Inside the gates of the park the trees are hung with row upon row of fairy lights, and the vendors who have set up booths here range from indie clothing designers to stalls selling quirky souvenirs. There’s also loads of food available, from sushi and kebabs to classic Thai street food, as well as live music and plenty of craft beer. Another highlight is the newly relocated Golden Axe Throw Club, where you can learn to toss a hatchet at a wooden target a few metres away (trained staff are on hand to instruct and assist). Open daily from 4pm till midnight, ArtBox is scheduled to remain in its Chuvit Garden location till May of 2020, although that deadline may be extended.

MIA RESTAURANT OPENS ITS DOORS IN THE HEART OF PHROM PHONG Situated in a refurbished two-storey house, on a small side street running off Sukhumvit Soi 26, Mia restaurant is a highly anticipated new arrival on Bangkok’s dining scene. The overall approach is described as “modern European”, which essentially means anything goes as long as it tastes good. Most dishes here are served as large size portions suitable for group dining. A perfect example is the decadent Truffle Mac n’ Cheese, which has a creamy Bechemel base and a top layer of melted Emmental cheese. It’s far too rich for one person alone! Other menu highlights include: Beetroot Pappardelle with goat cheese and candied walnut crumble (great for vegetarians); Hokkaido Scallop Carpaccio with green mango ice cream and shiso; the meaty grilled pork chop with a peppercorn glaze and scoop of delicious chorizo jam; and the superb Uni Tart topped with sea-urchin roe. JAPANESE IZAKAYA DINING – WITH A FEW INTERNATIONAL TWISTS – AT BAMBINO BAR & RESTAURANT Located within walking distance from Phloen Chit BTS station, Bambino is a hip, yet comfortably casual new addition to Bangkok’s Japanese dining scene. Here the chef incorporates Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese culinary influences to create an inventive Izakaya-style menu, ranging from the rich-tasting Bow Tie Pasta with Grilled Mushrooms and Cashew Miso, to the uniquely delicious Eggplant Scallop Dengaku, served with red miso. However, the most popular dish continues to be the Wagyu Sando, wherein a deep-fried breaded cutlet of Wagyu beef comes sandwiched between slices of toasted milk bread. Bambino also puts an equal importance on drinks, so try some of their signature cocktails. Located on the 32nd floor of the Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse, the main dining area features a chic modern-Chinese décor while the open-air rooftop bar area one flight up offers unobstructed city panoramas. For starters try the Flower Shaped Bean Curd with Morel Mushroom Soup (a fabulous vegetarian option), and the 9 Elements of Shanghai platter, with gourmet versions of favourites such as crispy pork, tomato cherries, “drunken” chicken, and diced jellyfish. The Peking Duck is, of course, a must try, and along with spring onion, cucumber, and Hoisin sauce the toppings include caviar, cantaloupe, and a yummy lychee butterfly pea jam. AFTERNOON TEA AND MORE AT NIKKO HOTEL The Japanese brand Nikko Hotels International opened its first Thai property on Sukhumvit Soi 55 earlier this year, located just a block from the Thong Lo BTS station. There are 301 guestrooms in total, but local fans of Japanese cuisine will be most interested in the on-site restaurants. On the main floor, Curve 55 is a light-filled spacious café where visitors can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea set. The sweet and savoury set menu items change four times a year to reflect the changing of the seasons in Japan, and are paired with either Thai flower tea, Mariage Frères teas from France, or bubbly prosecco cocktails. For a more traditional meal visit Hishou, the hotel’s dedicated Japanese restaurant, which serves authentic specialties and is also home to a sushi bar and a very recommended tempura bar (the only one of its kind in Bangkok). www.nikkobangkok.com

Located on Sukhumvit Soi 27, in a converted 2-storey house, the recently opened ICI (French for “here”) is a candy-coloured café where the dazzling dessert creations of Chef Arisara ‘Paper’ Chongphanitkul are meticulously crafted works of edible art, and so breathtakingly beautiful it seems a shame to actually eat them. Some of her signature creations include the incredibly lifelike Blueberry Balloon (really a cheesecake), and the unbelievable detailed ‘Starfish’, a dessert that was originally created for an exclusive Michelin Guide Thailand gala dinner. The menu also offers colourful macarons, delicious homemade ice creams with intriguing flavour combinations, and lots of small pastries that take their inspiration from fairy tale books. TREE ROOTS RETREAT: This wellness getaway began operations in October of 2016, making Tree Roots Retreat a relative newcomer to Thailand’s wellness holiday scene. Over the years it has proven itself to be both a popular spot for health and fitness buffs looking for a laid-back getaway that’s not too far from Bangkok… or the ocean. Another interesting aspect of the Chiva-Som experience is that guests are required to refrain from using cell phones and cameras in all common areas. en years ago you could have said that Phu Quoc was Vietnam’s hidden gem, but these days it’s no longer so hidden. In fact, it’s now one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations thanks in part to its designation as a “special economic zone”, which is great for international visitors who can arrive here without a visa for stays of 30 days or less. Last year, the island – which is about the size of Phuket – welcomed approximately 2.5 million tourist arrivals. Located off the southwest coast of Vietnam, the island is actually geographically closer to the Cambodian shoreline. Its enviable location means it shares the azure waters of the far eastern reaches of the Gulf of Thailand, as well as its bountiful supply of seafood. On the island itself you’ll encounter a lot of dense inland forests, but it’s the stretches of powdery,

barely-trodden beach that have attracted investors. In the past five years Puh Quoc has seen a construction boom, with an influx of integrated resorts, residential developments, theme parks, and even casinos. Phu Quoc National Park – which was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2010 – takes up a huge portion of the island’s north end, and the wildlife here includes hornbills, long-tailed macaques and silver langurs. Of course, if sun, sea, and sand is more what you have in mind, Bai Truong (Long Beach) has a multitude of resorts and it’s located close to the airport, however there are many other beach areas to explore as well. For visitors to Phu Quoc one of the biggest attractions on is taking an unforgettable ride the on what is officially “the world’s longest oversea cable car”. The length of the Sunworld Cable Car measures a whopping 7,899 metres, and the route links the southern tip of Phu Quoc with the neighbouring island of Hon Thom, more commonly referred to as ‘Pineapple Island’. The adult round-trip fare is VND 150,000 and the large cable cars offer 360° aerial views of the An Thoi archipelago from a dizzying height. The ride takes about 15 minutes each way, during which you’ll float over lush islands, turquoise seas, coral reefs, and fishing boats. And once you arrive at Pineapple Island you can take a refreshing dip at the beach (so don’t forget your bathing suit). There’s also a large waterpark under construction on Pineapple Island, due to open soon.

Mahanakhon Bangkok SkyBar THAILAND’S TALLEST DINING LANDMARK OFFERS MORE THAN JUST PANORAMIC SUNSET VIEWS

hen it opened in late 2018, the 78th floor outdoor glass-floor observation deck drew scores of tourists to the iconic King Power Mahanakhon tower, which for a brief time was officially the tallest building in Thailand. That lofty title was soon usurped by the Magnolias Waterfront Residences at Iconsiam, which measures just 12 feet taller. However, in July of 2019 the Mahanakhon Bangkok SkyBar finally opened it’s doors, and it remains Thailand’s highest restaurant. This modern 2-storey brasserie, expanding over the 76th and 77th floors, features a menu of sophisticated Western and Asian dishes along with signature creations by US-born Executive Chef Joshua Cameron; making dining here not just a novelty, but a true gourmet experience. The menu is accompanied by an extensive selection of classic cocktails and a list of over 100 wines with an emphasis on natural vino. Meanwhile, the beautifully designed French-inspired indoor and outdoor seating areas are the handiwork of Tristan Auer, from Wilson Associates studios. Of course, the star attraction for many will be the view from the restaurant’s many floor-to-ceiling windows, which overlooks downtown Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River. From the à la carte menu, Chef Joshua’s signature dishes include the richly decadent Hokkaido Uni Panna Cotta (THB 900) with ikura and yuzu ponzu, which combines Japanese elements with French techniques. A similar sophisticated twist is evident in his American-style Whole-roasted Chicken (THB

1,400), which arrives in a smoking, hay-filled roasting pan. Here a stuffing made of duxelles, black garlic, miso, butter and brioche breadcrumbs, which is layered beneath the crispy golden skin of this organic fowl. From the dessert menu the Kaffir Lime Cheesecake (THB 350) is a boldly colourful treat, with a classic Graham cracker crust, kaffir lime base, and a gelée topping of purple dragon fruit, all served with yuzu and passion fruit gels, fresh mangosteen, and a mango sorbet. The chef's tasting menu changes regularly with the seasons, but there's still time to catch his amazing 'Monsoon Season' set menu (THB 2,912 ++), which showcases the freshest ingredients available during Thailand's rainy season. At R-Hann, the term "beautiful dishes" refers to both the food and the flatware, as each course in the evening’s meal is presented in a breathtaking format on custom designed plates; some of which are hand-painted pieces of china that evoke the royal grandeur of the Rattanakosin period of Rama IV, while others employ carefully crafted natural materials such as wood and stone. A standout among the amuse-bouche starters is the indescribably yummy Crispy Coconut Coriander Crepe Roll, served with aromatic Tom Kha cream sauce and Royal Project caviar. Served on an intricately sculpted black earthenware pedestal, it lies hidden until the smoke-filled glass dome encasing it is lifted. From the appetizers list, the Thai Puff Ball Mushroom Collagen Jelly Soup, served with bamboo grass and sweet bamboo shoot crumble,

has an ethereal otherworld beauty to it; like something a shaman would have you eat in order to pass into another astral plane. Arriving in a hollowed out wooden bowl the jellied mushroom droplet is easily cleft in two with a spoon, and best enjoyed scooped up with some of the green crumble. Before the mains arrive the Trio of Siam Journey engages the palate with three one-bite delicacies served on a single plate, beginning with some charcoal grilled Northern Thai spicy Korat Wagyu sausage, followed by a tapioca ball with river prawn filling, and finishing with a dollop of crab meat and creamy crab with red curry. The main dishes continue to enthrall, including a Thai perch curry paired with rattan shoot, and a dish of stir-fried young tamarind with ground pork, to name but two. As a fitting finale, the multiple desserts courses – which include a divine Thai Chocolate Mousse Dome served with a roasted pancake wrap, tamarind ice cream, and chili salt – are all absolutely superb. After monsoon season ends this tasting menu will be retired, but Chef Chumpol will soon be dazzling diners with yet another aesthetically arranged multi-course meal, featuring exquisitely delicious seasonal specialties.

Royal Barge Procession THE UPCOMING ROYAL BARGE PROCESSION IS THE FINAL EVENT OF THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY KING MAHA VAJIRALONGKORN (RAMA X)

he 2019 Royal Barge Procession will take place on Thursday, October 24th along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. It will be the first Royal Barge Procession in the present monarch’s reign. The sacred barges, carved from huge pieces of teak wood, are reserved for auspicious ceremonies and state occasions and in the last 65 years have only appeared on the river a total of 16 times. On each vessel the prow is engraved with mythical creatures, gilded in gold and intricately decorated with tiny shimmering pieces of glass. The Royal Barge Procession is a ceremonial event undertaken by Thai kings since ancient times. The upcoming procession will be performed as part of His Majesty King Rama X’s city tour on the occasion of his coronation in 2019. The royal procession pays homage to the Holy Footprint, and brings significant Buddha images from the provinces to the capital, as well as a reception of foreign envoys. The entire procession is comprised of 52 barges, arranged in five groupings, employing more than 2,000 oarsmen. The procession measures about 1,200 metres long, and 90 metres wide. The rowing is performed in a synchronized movement and rhythm, accompanying the boat songs that praise the King and also describe the beauty of the boats themselves and the surroundings on both sides of the river. This elaborate procession opens a window into Thailand’s rich cultural history. It’s a rare spectacle and not to be missed!
