o matter where or how you travel, there’s always a certain amount of planning and organizing involved ahead of time; usually quite a bit if you want things to go smoothly. But for whole families on vacation, the planning ahead and the organization involved is multiplied substantially. Thankfully, countries like Thailand make it easy to plan family-friendly vacations that are both fun and affordable. Thailand has an incredible diversity when it comes to geography, so whether you and your family want a sun-soaked beach vacation or a holidays in the hills, there’s something for everyone. However, the thing that really sets Thailand apart is that it’s generally extremely safe. Parents still have to be careful, obviously, and depending on the age of the children in tow there are definite health concerns to keep in mind at all times. It’s probably best to drink only bottled water, at least for the first few days, but treating your kids to fresh fruit shakes made with ice is almost never a danger as the ice in the majority of restaurants and food stalls is made with clean water. And when it comes to eating at street stalls in general—which is where most travellers agree you’ll find the best food—just go with your instinct when it comes to hygiene. Most street eats are perfectly fine, but if your children aren’t keen on Asian food there’s almost always a McDonalds, or a pizza outlet close at hand in the heavily touristed areas. If your kids like the beach, there’s no shortage of beautiful ones to choose from in Thailand, especially in destinations such as Hua Hin, Phuket, and Koh Samui. However, almost any hotel or resort with a swimming pool is a kid’s dream come true, and many hotels now also offer specialized kids’ clubs, as well as babysitting services and other play facilities. Another sure bet for entertaining children is visiting zoos and aquariums, and Thailand has plenty of those. Finally, you can’t go wrong with amusement parks and water parks, and Thailand has some of the best in Southeast Asia. Visiting temples, palaces, ancient cities, and other historical landmarks is also a great idea, as it exposes children to the traditional culture of Thailand. Just remember as you go along to keep everyone hydrated, well fed, and rested. Some parents even enroll with their children in Thai cooking classes, which is a very unique and wonderful family bonding experience. Travel within Thailand is also not a problem for families, and short haul domestic air travel is overall quite affordable. But don’t shy away from taking the trains. The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, for instance, is a both comfortable and affordable, and most children will probably love the adventure of sleeping in the jiggling bunk beds. There’s literally no shortage of things to do in Thailand with kids, and it’s probably the best set up country in Southeast Asia for family vacations. And, of course, wee ones are always made to feel welcome by the warm smile of the Thai people. Bruce Scott

CALI-MEX OPENS THEIR SECOND BANGKOK BRANCH The successful Hong Kong-based, American-style, Mexican restaurant Cali-Mex Bar & Grill opened its first Bangkok branch on the main floor of the Holiday Inn on Sukhumvit Soi 22. Now there’s a second location, right in the heart of busy Sukhumvit Soi 11. The new outlet is more of a flagship venue, with two floors and an outdoor patio area overlooking the street. Enjoy a Californian-style take on Mexican classics, like nachos, burritos, and quesadillas, using quality farm produce flown in fresh from around the world— from Australian Angus beef, to Mexican avocado, to Vietnamese seafood. Open daily from 10:30am till 2am. Meanwhile, if you want a more secluded spot for potent late night cocktails, Los Atico is a cool new Mexican-style speakeasy bar that sits directly above the new Cali-Mex on Soi 11. Accessible via a clandestine spiral staircase out back, they offer 50 premium mezcals and tequilas, as well as five unique margaritas on the drink list. DISCOVER KOREAN COCKTAILS AND MORE AT SULBKK The recently opened SulBkk is a slightly hidden, speakeasy-style club venue on Thong Lor Soi 10, serving Korean fusion food alongside inventive cocktails that use Korean spirits—such as soju and rice wine—and featuring DJs that know their Korean pop music. The mix of exposed concrete and red bricks walls give it an industrial, big city nightclub vibe, but it’s still small enough to make you feel like you’re “in-the-know” for being there. The interior is split into three zones, with the main bar area in the middle and two cozy seating areas on either side. For snacks try the kimchi risotto, the pork belly injeolmi (a type of pounded rice cake), or the “K” poutine, which uses Korean beef in the gravy and comes topped with diced kimchi. From the cocktail menu, try the Sansachun Sangria, made with Korean rice wine and topped with mixed fresh fruit and elderflower syrup, or take a chance on the Bulgogi Old Fashioned, which features real Korean bulgogi sauce and is served with side of dark chocolate. THE WOOF TOP IS A ROOFTOP BAR WITH AN ARTY ANGLE By the time you read this the Woof Top bar will have officially opened its doors. This fifth floor rooftop venue offers amazing treetop level views over the green expanse of Lumphini Park directly across the road, and there’s even a retractable canopy for inclement weather. The daily “happy hour” specials also make it way more affordable than Bangkok’s more sky-high rooftop bars. It’s open daily from 5pm till midnight, but if you arrive earlier be sure to check out the entire Woof Pack building (located on Sala Daeng Soi 1). This creatively repurposed office block is home to several boutique design firms and marketing agencies, but the team behind the reclamation project also made room for art-related public access areas and cool drink and dine spots. There’s an art gallery on the second floor, as well as the Bangkok Screening Room, an art house cinema showing a diverse selection of indie films, provocative documentaries, and cinematic classics. Meanwhile, the food and beverage venues include: Gus Damn Good, an artisanal ice cream shop; Meatchop Butcher & Spirits, a steak restaurant and bar; Hung-Sen, a casual Thai food eatery; F.I.X., a nitro coffee tap café; and Happy Endings, a cozy little romantic hideaway serving contemporary takes on classic Vietnamese dishes. www.woofpackbangkok.com

PIZZAIOLA BY PIZZA MASSILIA OPENS UP IN CENTRAL WORLD Located on the 7th floor of the massive Central World shopping complex, Pizzaiola is the latest project from the award-winning team behind Pizza Massilia. The varied menu here features a mix of traditional and not-so-traditional pizzas, many utilizing ingredients from local farmers and producers. The décor features Mediterranean white and blue Greek inspired ceramic wall patterns, with a grand Stefano Ferrara pizza oven as the centrepiece. For those who like classic Italian, the marinara is pizza as its purest— with fresh mozzarella flown in from Campania that will stay gooey all the way till the end. Or, try a pizza with a Thai twist and order either the Chiang Mai-style sai-ua sausage pizza, or the spicy pork pad kra pow pizza. Some of his cocktails also invite participation from the customer, including the Holi cocktail (THB 350), which lets you create a multi-coloured design of your own in the white foam, and the Undecided (THB 450), a mystery drink that lets you scan an edible QR code to find out what the ingredients are. Delicious bar snacks are also available, derived from the kitchens of the hotels three in-house restaurants: Da Vinci (Italian); Mexicano (Mexican); and Rang Mahal (Indian).
Described as an “upcycled urban space”, Model Market BKK is a new open-air eating and drinking venue, with assorted food trucks, food stalls, and drink stations from some of Bangkok’s most loved bars and restaurants (Peppina, Tropic City, Mikkeller, etc). The team behind the project—which is temporary, and may only last another six months—have converted an abandoned urban lot into a unique social hub, while at the same time mandating a “zero waste policy”, as the décor is all repurposed material and there is little or no plastic or paper waste. The vibe is definitely laid back and casual, with music provided by Bangkok’s hottest DJs, plus live performances by singer songwriters on the weekends. hailand is probably the best set up country in Southeast Asia for family vacations. You also can’t go wrong visiting amusement parks and water parks, and Thailand has some of the best in this part of the world. And even when the weather doesn't cooperate there are still plenty of indoor activities to choose from as well, including wacky museums, game arcades, and fascinating arts and crafts workshops.

The main beach at Hua Hin is a 4km strip of white sand that stretches from the town centre to Khao Takiap, and overlooks the gentle waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Many four and five star hotels can be found along Hua Hin beach, so staying at one of these properties means easy access to the sand and sea. There are lots of familyfriendly activities are on offer up and down the length of this shoreline, including pony rides and banana boat rides. Plearn Wan Vintage Village The term Plearn Wan means the “joy of yesteryear” and here you can experience what Hua Hin—and most of Thailand—would have been like in the 1950s. Baan Sillapin Artists Village Let your child’s artistic side run wild with a visit to Baan Sillapin, also known as the Hua Hin Artist Village. Vana Nava Water Jungle The Vana Nava Water Jungle transformed an empty plot of land into a tropical oasis, with over 200,000 plants and trees delivered from across Thailand to this 3.2 hectare property. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Sitting at an elevation of 1,050 metres, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a Theravada Buddhist temple located about 15 km from the Chiang Mai city centre. This sacred site is commonly referred to as simply ‘Doi Suthep’, although this is actually the name of the mountain it sits upon. Legend says that the temple was founded in 1383, and over time the complex has expanded and been made to look more extravagant. The road to the temple was built in 1935, and from the parking lot at the temple's base visitors can climb the 309 steps to reach the pagodas, or take a tram. he southern province of Trang may be one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. It’s located just south of Krabi province, and offers visitors an abundance of beautiful beaches, idyllic tropical islands, and scenic mountainous countryside. With so much to explore and enjoy it’s surprising that Trang is not flooded with more tourists. However, the fact that it is somewhat “undiscovered” just adds to its charm. Trang City, situated just north of the Trang airport, is the capital of the province and has a very attractive historical district. Take a leisurely stroll around this laid-back town and discover the many historic “Sino-Portuguese” style buildings that have been lovingly preserved. Most of Trang’s historic houses are concentrated around Kantang, Sathanee, and Ratchadamnoen roads, and recently local artists have painted colourful frescoes and murals on some of these historic walls—turning them into great selfie spots.

Trang City is also proud of its iconic “froghead” three-wheel tuk-tuks. Take a city tour in one of these contraptions and you’ll pass by sights such as the very modernist, concrete Clock Tower, which was erected back in 1961. Other historic landmarks include the Dugong Fountain roundabout, which pays homage to Trang’s famous marine mammal, and the Trang Church, which dates back to1915. The original church was built out of bamboo, but it was renovated and rebuilt, using brick, plaster, and concrete, back in 1985.

From Trang City it’s about a one-hour drive south to the coast, which has some incredible beaches looking out onto the Andaman Sea. However, there are even more amazing beaches to be found on some of the small islands that lie just off the coast, and organized boat trips to these tropical hideaways leave from the pier at Pakmeng every morning. Our trip took us first to the ‘Emerald Cave’, which is a beautiful hidden lagoon accessible only by swimming slowly through a dark and narrow cave underneath a giant karst (limestone) rock formation. It’s a bit of a spooky journey, but expert guides lead all visitors in and out. And when large tour groups arrive, the line of swimmers forming a human chain in the water can be extremely long. The next stop on our trip was a bit of snorkeling off the coast of Koh Kradan. The shallow waters here are crystal clear and the corals are quite healthy, which means you’ll see lots of fish as well. After snorkeling we had a seriously delicious picnic lunch on Koh Kradan, followed by some leisure time just enjoying the stunning white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters. Afterwards, we did a second snorkel stop at Koh Chuek, where the fish were even more abundant. The trip to and from the mainland passes by many giant karst (limestone) rock formations that jut straight out of the water at seemingly impossible angles. Southern Thailand is famous for these dramatic natural wonders, and the ones in Trang are just as breathtaking as the ones in Krabi, PhangNga, and Phuket. Trang is also a producer of robusta coffee beans, and you can learn more about coffee production in this region by visiting Father's Farm Thailand, located at 235 Moo 1, Ao Tong sub-district, Wang Wiset district (near the border with Krabi province). Check out this fun and funky family-run business, and try some of their delicious coffee, as well as teas, juices, and even oven-baked pizza.
Not far from Father's Farm is a small apiary (bee farm), where local farmers produce both honey, and honey-based soaps and shampoos. You can also learn about local rice cultivation here, and perhaps eat fresh mulberries (in season) picked right of the bush. We even got to try a special Thai delicacy that is quite popular in this region—steamed pitcher plant pods filled with black sticky rice and coconut milk. Delicious!

n Thailand, Songkran is the annual new year’s holiday that runs from April 13th to 15th (however, some regions of the Kingdom, such as Chiang Mai, stretch the festivities out a few days longer). Over the past few decades Songkran has taken on legendary status as one of the wettest and wildest parties on the planet, but it’s important to remember that this festival—also celebrated in other Southeast Asian Buddhist countries, including Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia—is rooted in ancient traditions. The solar-lunar New Year, when the sun passes from the sign of Pisces into the sign of Aries in the zodiac, is called Samkranta (Sanskrit for “fully passed over”), which is where the word “songkran” comes from. of the festival, people traditionally give their homes a thorough cleaning to welcome the New Year spirit. New clothes would be worn, while old clothing and dispensable household possessions would be thrown away. On the second day, important Buddha images would be taken from local monasteries and paraded in the streets. Typically, on the third day of celebrations, Buddha images are returned to their monastery homes where they receive a ritual bathing as devotees pour water over the images. The faithful will also pour water over the hands of older Buddhist monks, and elders in their family. Although the meaning of this “water festival” is kept alive by traditional ceremonies, nowadays it’s also a festival devoted to fun… and getting very, very wet! In the bigger cities Songkran has escalated to a fullscale aquatic assault, involving water guns, hoses, and virtually anything that can soak other people.
