riving down Durham Street recently it took me a few seconds to register what was ‘strange’ about it. With pedestrians and vehicles once again dwarfed by buildings, I was transported back to pre-quake life. While it is refreshing to have our eyes drawn up, and to experience architecture as it should be – rather than as a pile of rubble or in a state of disrepair – there is something surreal about things returning to ‘normal’. Things are the same, yet different. And of course the traffic cones, detour signs and construction found on the next corner brought me quickly back to post-quake living. The question is: are we making the right progress? In Melbourne earlier this month I was captivated by the effortless manner in which colour and texture have been used in their commercial buildings to achieve a sense of play, movement and personality. Old sits harmoniously alongside new, and the roads and footpaths have been crafted to allow for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to cohabit with ease. While we are constrained by the footprint of the past and pressured by the passing of time, my concern is that we have missed the opportunity to learn from other great cities, in a quest to reinstate the inner city with walls of glass and concrete. With the summer months well and truly upon us, now is the time to reflect on the year that has been and the progress we have made as both a city and personally. Enjoy this vibrant and fun-filled time of year, and of course our latest issue!

COLOUR CRUSH
Resene Colour Expert Nikki Morris is inspired by the raw, natural beauty of wood The beauty of nature has long inspired home design, and nothing can match timber for its infinite variety of natural markings and grains. While it has always been a popular option outside, we are seeing a resurgence of timber in interiors, which goes hand in hand with the return of an appreciation for craft production, and the current trend for Scandinavian or beach-inspired interiors. Easily achieved with Resene Colorwood Whitewash. Just as the bark of a tree protects the timber beneath, you need to make sure the timbers used in your home are well protected, be they coverings on the wall, floor or ceiling, or accessories. Whether you opt for a clear finish, such as Resene Aquaclear, or a stained finish, such as Resene Colorwood, timber is all about an appreciation for natural texture and will bring a raw warmth and richness to your space. 0800 RESENE (737 363) resene.co.nz/Colorwood.htm

G ET THE LOOK
T
he accessories in our home bring the walls, floors and furniture together. They showcase our individual tastes and personal flair, and complete the look and feel of a room. Before you start down the pathway of adding accessories to your home, take some time to consider the feel you want to achieve. Look around your home and see what your space is lacking: do you need cushions and throws for colour and warmth; do you need display items to fill your shelves and add texture, side tables for functionality or lamps for mood lighting? Creating a shortlist of your needs allows you to have a clear understanding of the pieces you are after; streamlining what can be an overwhelming search! It also pays to have a clear idea of the space you are working within. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a striking piece only to discover it won’t complement or even fit in the room! Remember, you are looking for items that are going to enhance and add to your space, not overwhelm it. Once you know what you are after it is time to head out and about. Take your time and, just like shopping for clothes, don’t impulse buy – you can waste a lot of money by investing in the wrong choices. Buying one key piece can be just as successful as buying a lot of little pieces. The key thing: make sure it’s right for your space. Listen to what the design consultants in the store have to say; as experts in the current trends and how spaces work, they can provide you with invaluable advice and assistance. The most important thing to remember is that you have to love it. It is you and your family who will entertain and relax in the space you are decorating. You have to live with it everyday so, while trends can provide a starting point, don’t get too carried away and lose sight of what makes you and your home so special. hubbers.co.nz | 03 348 2954

FLOOR COVE RINGS
FLOORED by POSSIBILITIES From bespoke designs to luxurious floor coverings, Artisan Flooring does it all. Having recently opened the doors of their new Christchurch showroom, we talk to flooring consultant Catherine Vanner about the way floor coverings can transform a space
Q
Tell us a little bit about your natural fibre flooring materials. Our natural fibre flooring
is imported from exotic destinations around the world. Sisal is extracted from the Agave sisalana plant, which is grown in Brazil, Mexico, China and Africa. Jute is made from the root of giant corchorus plants grown in Bangladesh. Seagrass is collected from the paddy fields and riverbanks of China and Vietnam. And Coir, a fibre extracted by hand from the husk of coconut, is grown on the swaying palms of India. Once Sisal, Seagrass and Jute are harvested, the fibres are graded for length and quality. Then, after colouring and drying in the sun, they are NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
spun into yarn or cords suitable for weaving. Coir, the toughest fibre, is first softened in seawater lagoons and pounded into a soft filament, ready for spinning into yarns. The spools of yarn are then woven on jacquard looms, a slow delicate process that is best for producing the beautiful and intricate patterns and designs. Our Sisal rugs are then made right here in our warehouse.
Q
How do I know which flooring material is right for me? Foot traffic is a key factor when
choosing a rug. High pile shag rugs are difficult to clean and not ideal for those with dogs or when placed under a dining room table. In contrast, low

came from. For example, our nomads are woven in Agra, India, using a double twist Persian knot, and each town is responsible for a different colourway. By opting for a handmade rug you know you are investing in a unique and ethical piece that has been crafted for durability and enjoyment.
Q
Colour and pattern are central to your ranges. Do you have any tips on how to incorporate these bolder styles in the home? Selecting colour
can be challenging. If you already have a lot of colour in the room you might want to go for a single colour rug or a natural shade that complements your furnishings. But don’t play it too safe! A bold rug with striking pattern might be just the thing your room needs to take it to the next level. Internationally we are noticing that colour trends are dominated by neutral shades; however we are also seeing spice shades such as curry, mustard, blue and even some greens coming through.
Q pile synthetic rugs such as flatweaves are great for high foot traffic areas and also have the added advantage of being easy to clean. This makes them perfect for the dining room and for kids’ areas where the likelihood of spills is great! Thin rugs such as kilims or vintage patchworks work beautifully as a feature of the room or to define a space; however they are not the sort of rug you would want to lie on for too long as they don’t provide any cushioning.
What can we expect to see from rugs in 2016?
Patterns are definitely the next big thing in floor coverings and, more and more, people are starting to see rugs as pieces of art rather than just floor coverings. Pattern is great for creating a focal point in a room, and we are seeing a lot of organic shapes and floral designs taking centre stage. We are also seeing silk rugs making a comeback. They create a luxurious feel and really illuminate a room as the light reflects differently into the pile, creating numerous effects from different angles. Art silk is an excellent, cost effective alternative to pure silk and produces a similar sheen. 021 550 623 | artisanflooring.co.nz
TOP LEFT Adding depth to the living room is a vintage overdyed blue rug. BELOW Perfect for bringing colour and warmth to a contemporary or industrial space is this Moldovan vintage kilim.
Q
How can a rug transform a space? Often a space can look empty or unfinished and it’s hard to put your finger on what is missing exactly. Rugs are a great way to add personality and comfort while providing a connection between different spaces, as rugs that incorporate colours from two rooms will help create flow.
Q
Where should I start when thinking about buying a rug? When choosing a rug, first and
foremost you need to ascertain its purpose. Do you want your rug to eliminate noise on wooden floors, make an entrance non-slip, or define a space for children to play? Or, do you simply want to add warmth and luxury to the space? From here it is about finding something you like that works with your interior. It also pays to consider the story behind your rug. Handmade rugs are very popular as there is something special about knowing where your rug NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

KIDS
for the little ones Passionate about adding fun and function to a space, Rachel Blake of Mocka provides us with food for thought when it comes to kids’ bedrooms
THIS PAGE Stylish and affordable, the European inspired, Mocka Aspiring Cot and Brooklyn Change Table and Drawer Set will tick every box for parents seeking seeking quality nursery furniture that adapts to their child's needs. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
KIDS
A
nursery or child’s bedroom is their haven, their own little space to rest and play, and the design of the space needs to reflect their personality as well as be functional for them and for you. BEGINNING WITH THE COT When it comes to nurseries, it is about creating an environment that’s fun while being calm and relaxing for the baby, without compromising on the basics. Babies grow incredibly fast so look for furniture that will grow with your child. Look for a cot that can transition into a toddler bed and a change table that can be used as a chest of drawers once your baby has outgrown its initial use. This will save you a lot of money by not having to replace items as your child grows. When purchasing a cot the number one rule is to ensure it complies with the AS/NZS 2172 safety standards. In order for the cot to comply with the safety standards, the spacing between each bar needs to be between 5cm and 9.5cm to avoid the baby’s head from getting stuck. It is also important to ensure the cot is sturdy and does not have protruding edges that your baby can injure himself on. Always remember that baby fingers are tiny and can get caught in the smallest of spaces. As babies grow they also become the ultimate escape artists, and it pays to double check, before you buy, that there aren’t any ledges in the cot that your baby can use for climbing out. Most cots come with an adjustable base setting that allows you to lower the mattress base as your child begins to sit up, which helps prevent them from climbing out when unsupervised.
ABOVE Perfect for the style conscious, the Belle Table and Chairs give your child their very own place to sit and play, balancing both style and function. Curtains from Niche Designs complete this neutral space.
STORAGE Children’s spaces are all about balancing play with function. Kids have a lot of stuff. So, investing in practical storage pieces will help to keep the room tidy and streamline the space to enhance the style. Opt for storage pieces that are fun and that add that playful touch. A toy box is a classic piece that will never date, and a simple design makes it easy for your child to tidy up their toys once they have finished playing with them. Also, look for items that have a double use, for example seats with hidden storage compartments or storage units with display spaces. Always look at ways that you can increase the storage space in your child’s bedroom, by making use of the space under the bed or on the walls for example, while adding to the style of the space.
ABOVE When adding colour to a kid’s bedroom, start off with a minimal approach; it’s easier to add more than to take it away. A simple, coloured bed like the Sonata Bed can make a big impact to the space and liven up a room.
WHERE TO START WITH DECORATING Start with the end in mind, then set a budget and stick to it! Use magazine clippings and Pinterest to create mood boards to help focus your ideas for the room. Decorating a child’s bedroom is fun but you can get caught up in the whirlwind created by so many great products on the market. If you stick to your mood board and budget, it will make it easier to decide on key pieces for the room and eliminate unnecessary items. COLOUR & PATTERN Using colour in a nursery or kid’s bedroom is all down to personal taste. Gone are the days of gender-specific kids’ bedrooms. Today we are creating bedrooms which feature soft pastels, bright and bold colours or monochrome themes. However, colour does inspire a child’s imagination and there are many subtle ways that you can add colour. Wall decals, prints, artwork, garlands or bunting add instant splashes of colour and pattern, and are affordable and easily adaptable. mocka.co.nz NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

esigned to store those necessary bathroom items, a bathroom vanity is generally a timber cabinet, finished in a suitable moisture-resistant material and fitted with a basin top or benchtop and basin. Sounds pretty simple and basic. However, there is more to consider such as: cabinet material, size, colour, storage, style and how it fits into the overall bathroom design. Today, many vanity cabinets are imported. When purchasing, consider the quality, the conditions of the warranty provided, as well as the environmental impact of the materials used. The Athena Create vanity range is made in New Zealand from MDF/Particle board that has been sourced from locally-managed sustainable forest plantations. Manufactured to the international E1 low emission standard (low formaldehyde) or better, the board is regarded amongst the best of its type in the world. COLOUR Manufactured using the latest heat and moisture-resistant bonding technology, Athena use a range of Laminate and Exochique finishes which provide a superior finish: more resistant to bumps and knocks, with higher UV and impact resistance compared with other gloss finishes. In terms of current colour trends, white is still dominant. However we are seeing preferences for Charred and Dark Oak wood textures; and
THE FINISHING TOUCHES Selecting the perfect tapware and handles to complement the style and size of your vanity is very important. For a small hand basin, such as the Athena Mini Composite, you could consider going for something small and minimalistic in design, such as the Methven Tahi Twin Lever Basin Mixer; whereas, for a basin mounted on a benchtop, like the Athena Sirocco range, a wall-mounted faucet tap like the Methven Kiri Wall Faucet is a beautiful complement. Designed to complement their Create range of vanities, Athena offer three handle options to ensure your vanity is perfectly tailored to suit your personal style. grey-based colours have also grown in popularity, in particular Graphite from the Exochique colour range, and the Savanna and Piper colourways, which come in a standard laminate finish. DESIGN There are a variety of cabinet designs to choose from and most are available in floor or wall hung units. Recently, wall hung vanities have gained in popularity as they are easy to clean and provide a feeling of more space in the bathroom. Single and double drawer designs are also becoming very desirable. They offer good storage and easy access to items: simpler to pull out a drawer to get what you need than open a door and then have to fossick around in the back of a cabinet. Negative detail cabinetry is also proving a winner. Essentially the cabinets have a concealed opening and therefore no handles, providing a sleek and uncomplicated appearance. BENCHTOPS Recently there has been a shift in the choice of material for vanity tops. Previously, acrylic and vitreous china were the primary options; but with recent improvements in mineral composite/polymarble top construction, especially around UV stability, composite vanity tops have grown in popularity. Vitreous china is still the most desirable option, but composite now offers a surface that comes very close in terms of its glossiness. The other advantage with composite is its dimensional stability. 03 366 7137 | edwardgibbon.co.nz athena.co.nz NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

BUILDING
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
BUILDING
raising the standard Lucinda Diack sits down with compelling characters Jamie and Irma Buchan of Buchan Homes
N
o strangers to the construction sector, husband and wife Jamie and Irma Buchan began their journey into building in Auckland many years ago. Jamie entered an apprenticeship straight out of school; and with passion and persistence in equal measure, he has spent the past thirty years building the family business, an enterprise which involved transferring the business from Auckland to North Canterbury before finally settling in Christchurch. They are a formidable, yet entertaining pair, and approach their clients’ builds as if they were their own. With Irma undertaking the day-to-day operation and six staff out there on the tools, Jamie has perfected his business plan to allow him to dedicate his days to what he does best – attending to the detail. Fondly referred to as ‘Hawk-Eye’ by his staff, Jamie supervises every build, driven by the principle: ‘do it once and do it right’.
'The team shares this commitment', explains Jamie, 'with a number of them, including Hayden Johnson, having worked for us for many years'. For Hayden, Buchan Homes has been much more than a job, having worked for the company for over six years. During this time, Hayden completed his apprenticeship, and has gone on to become Jamie's right-hand man. Working alongside a consistent and dedicated team of sub-contractors, including designer Mitchell Coll, Buchan Homes provides homebuilders with the confidence that they are getting a quality custom-designed house that meets their needs, and that is also built with respect for the environment and the site. Embarking on a building project, the clients’ needs are paramount. ‘We are receptive and proactive when it comes to understanding and meeting our customers’ needs’, shares Irma.

BUILDING
‘We begin our builds by sitting around the table with our clients and discussing what they want to achieve’, explains Jamie. ‘In some instances they already have a plan in place; in others we bring a designer on board. Each client is different and we are very respectful of that. It’s what makes working in construction such an enjoyable and varied experience’. ‘We also appreciate that building is an expensive and daunting process, so it is our aim to make it as fun and easy as possible.’ It is evident from the animated way in which they recount past builds – as they recall celebratory drinks that mark the culmination of a build and refer to many past clients as firm friends – that the pair develops excellent rapport with their clients and have fun along the way. However it is not only the construction side of things that Jamie and Irma bring to the table. As shareholders of Red & Black Scaffolding, they have NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
positioned themselves firmly as experts in all things building. Reflecting on the current Canterbury building environment, Jamie comments: 'the earthquakes changed our thinking; they presented a steep learning curve for everyone in the sector. In the weeks, months and years following the quakes Jamie dedicated much of his time to assessing houses across Canterbury – a ‘confronting and eye-opening’ process which gave him a deeper understanding and appreciation of how seismic movement impacts on the structure of homes. Jamie recognises that this period of heartbreak and devastation has seen a shift in our attitudes towards building. Canterbury homebuilders are asking more questions, seeking a greater level of understanding and detail, and raising their expectations around seismic performance. CL ADDING
the IDEAL HOUSE Building the perfect home is a completely different journey for every designer, builder, renovator and homemaker. But for one couple, their journey wasn’t just different; it was ground-breaking
I
n 2012, Murray and Lee Ann Durbin, along with s3architects and the School of Architecture at The University of Auckland, set out on a cutting-edge building project: to create the ideal house in the Pohutakawa Coast region of Auckland. Right from conception, the project had some lofty goals: to become one of the most energy-efficient homes in New Zealand, certified under the German ‘Passive House’ programme and highly rated under Homestar, all the while sticking to an attainable budget. Designed for a family of five, the house needed to be comfortable, healthy, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly. Additionally, the aspiration was that the house would produce an energy surplus which could then be fed back into the national grid. When it came to choosing a sustainable lowmaintenance exterior product that would stand the test of time, Murray, Lee Ann and their team chose to use Linea Weatherboard by James Hardie. ‘The house was originally designed and specified in cedar cladding’, Murray explains. ‘However, my parents had recently had to replace large sections of cedar cladding on their Auckland home after about 20 years. We decided to look for a durable cladding option which would be easier to maintain, particularly because many areas of the house require scaffolding to access.’ As well as being functional and easy to maintain, the ideal house needed to look good. ‘We love [Linea’s] weatherboard look’, continues Murray. ‘We considered timber, but we’ve had issues with resin-bleed from timber weatherboards previously; plus we liked the flexibility of being able to paint the Linea any colour we wanted.’ As for the final result: ‘We love it. The way the white weatherboards contrast with the grey friars of the other vertical cladding looks amazing; and deciding to leave the stainless soakers exposed really helps our home fit in with its coastal surroundings.’ And Murray isn’t the only one who likes it. In late 2013 the house was awarded the prestigious 8 Star Homestar Rating and now ranks alongside only a handful of other environmentallyfriendly, sustainable builds in New Zealand. So would Murray use Linea Weatherboard again? ‘Yes, we are sold on the product. We will always look to use Linea as the main cladding product on any home we build in the future.’ jameshardie.co.nz | 0800 808 868

2015 NKBA AWARDS
CREATIVE EXCELLENCE We take you inside five award-winning kitchens and bathrooms
W
hen it comes to creating exceptional kitchens and bathrooms, the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association introduces homeowners to dedicated design and manufacturing professionals from across the country, and delivers ideas, information and inspiration on tap. Bringing these practical, inherently personal spaces into the spotlight, the annual NKBA Awards celebrate innovation and outstanding design. This year attracted an astounding 66 entries, each an expression of the unique personality of homeowner and the unbounded creativity of designer. Looking to the entries, the benchtops and cabinetry from sponsor Prime Panels make their mark. ‘While we work closely with a number of suppliers’, explains designer Ingrid Geldof, ‘Prime Panels has an extensive range of melamines and some unique veneers, providing versatile solutions when it comes to achieving the perfect finish for a project.’ The awards showcase the ways their products have
enhanced such beautifully crafted spaces. Also adding wow factor to many of this year’s design entries is stone. Tom Molloy, of Artisan Stone by Trethewey, notes the current trend towards using stone in different parts of the house, beyond the main kitchen. And what is exciting, he explains, is that, 'as well as the stunning natural stone, demand for products like Caesarstone’s Supernatural range has expanded the possibilities for design – with colours inspired by natural marble and the performance advantages of engineered quartz stone.’ Tom acknowledges the important role the organisation plays: ‘It gives a voice to the industry, bringing members together and encouraging growth and the sharing of knowledge, as well as recognising great design and innovation.’ This year the standard of entries in the NKBA Awards was excellent. Celebrating outstanding creations from across the country, many of the top awards for 2015 were picked up by local Canterbury designers.
ABOVE Awarded the People’s Choice Bathroom Award for 2015 was Rachel Barnes of Ingrid Geldof Design. Simple yet effective, the ensuite was to be a relaxing space that included a bath, double vanity, storage solutions and separate areas for the toilet and shower. The vanity carcass is made from 18mm Sovereign Oak by Prime Panels with matching PVC edges and solid faces, and with Prime Panels veneer insets; while the top is Alarti marble by Artisan Stone. Rachel Barnes, Ingrid Geldof Design For these owners, their holiday home would one day become a place of permanent residence.Their kitchen needed to be the heart of family life as well as a hub for entertaining. Sophisticated, dark and masculine – designed to contrast with the rough, pale textures of the adjoining bagged schist feature wall – the joinery makes a striking statement. Enhancing this effect and ensuring a simple, polished palette, an Absolute Black granite benchtop with a textured finish, by Artisan Stone, was selected for the island top. Underfoot, Belgian Bluestone was selected for its organic, naturally aged appearance, and this was also used for the splashback. A large stainless steel oven satisfies the homeowners’ desire for a semi-commercial feel; while its red knobs add pops of colour and personality to the refined palette. Meeting the homeowners’ desire for functionality, the scullery provides a utility zone for everyday use, and doubles as a service space for when the owners have guests. This is a stunning kitchen for work and play. JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The strength and dominance of this kitchen add to the overall impact of this large area. Good use of texture and material add to the sculptural effect, while the design provides a very functional space. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

Indoor-outdoor flow was the driving force behind this renovation by Emma Morris of Eterno Design. Part of a complete interior makeover, the kitchen boasts all that the modern home chef is after, while effortlessly retaining the character and personality of the existing dwelling. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
Eager to transform what was a narrow, confined space, and envisioning a semitraditional, industrial kitchen in their villa, the owners had already stripped the interior flooring and wall linings when designer Ingrid Geldof came on board. With no connection to the outside deck, the space benefitted from being opened up. Pivotal to the transformation, French doors opened the kitchen to the deck and outdoor barbecue area, allowing fresh air and light to flood the space. The indoor-outdoor flow is fabulous; exciting with summer on our doorstep! An L-shaped kitchen fitted with the existing space; and a narrow wall adjacent provided space for a working pantry, as well as additional storage and concealed bench space. Above, the exposed roof trusses enhance the sense of space and also allow for innovative lighting by Jeff Merrin. Complementing the white wall tiles, Black Stained European Crown-cut Ash joinery from Prime Panels creates a fresh, yet moody atmosphere, and features such as the stainless steel butler’s sink enhance the desired industrial look. Breathing new life and light into this kitchen, the design has transformed the way the space works.

Seeking a bathroom that reflected modern architecture, the clients requested sophisticated lines, beautiful natural surfaces and elegant fittings and fixtures. This cleverly designed master ensuite matches absolutely the vision of the clients, and shows how a confined architectural space can be utilised fully to create a feeling of openness as well as tranquillity. The result is a private sanctuary – at once calming and invigorating. The vanity – custom-made from natural honed slate by Artisan Stone – adds wow factor. Inset between two walls and raised from the floor, the vanity contrasts sharply with the natural travertine walls and reinforces the sense of space. The American White Oak drawer unit below the vanity, by Prime Panels, provides ample storage and functionality. The design utilises all the available space, and the clever mix of selected finishes and fixtures creates an atmosphere that is spacious, soothing and completely satisfying. JUDGES’ COMMENTS

Clean lines, textural surfaces and simple, elegant fittings and fixtures were elemental to their vision. With a dual walk-in shower at the centre, this bathroom utilises the existing space and blends contemporary design with a practical layout. Twin vanity bowls sit neatly atop a custommade piece of furniture providing ample storage below. Creating a feeling of balance, a mirror cabinet provides further storage above. BEYOND BUILDING For Christchurch builder Daryl Hewitt the rebuild of his family home is not only a feat of engineering and design, but an award-winning showcase of his skill, knowledge and attention to detail WO R DS LU C I N DA D IAC K

ith their house damaged beyond repair as a result of the February 22 earthquake, Tara and Daryl Hewitt were left with little choice but to rebuild. As the owner-operators of D J Hewitt Builders, the rebuild would be their fourth build for themselves and the second on their beloved Redcliffs property. Specialising in architecturally-designed builds, particularly in the hill suburbs, their personal journey back from devastation has showcased their talent, commitment to quality and their passion for innovative technology. While Daryl started the demolition process, behind the controls of the bulldozer, he is quick to credit those who assisted in clearing the site and preparing it to start afresh. 'Having done the excavations for Daryl's previous house on the property, and seeing it translated into the beautiful home it was, to then have to demolish it after the earthquakes, it seemed only right to give Daryl the controls of the excavator to start the process', shares Trevor Stevens. Having worked with Daryl for a number of years, Trevor Stevens Excavation was a natural choice when it came to his excavation needs. ‘Trevor did most of the demolition work, all of the excavation and the backfilling of the foundations’, explains Daryl, paving the way for home number four. The construction of the home sets it apart. Daryl’s unique understanding of the performance of buildings during seismic movement meant that he was focused on rebuilding the safest house he could. Working with Daryl on this was hill and architectural build specialist, Coastal Brick & Block. ‘A great home starts from a solid foundation and good strong bones’, shares Managing Director Steve Canavan. Solid filled Viblock 20 and 25 series masonry blocks, regarded for their specialist retaining properties, were used for the foundations, subfloor, landscape and site retaining walls. While the majority of Coastal Brick & Block’s work is then hidden from sight, they leave their clients safe in the knowledge that their section and home has been future-proofed. For the supply of general building materials, Daryl brought Carters into the team. Working across the greater Canterbury region with three branches, Carters is a leading supplier of building products and works closely with builders, Nestled into its hill site the exterior is primarily clad in stained cedar, with a crisp feature wall of vertically grooved Axon Panel from James Hardie adding architectural interest and detail. homeowners and designers to ensure the materials supplied meet the outlined specifications. Carters Madras Street boasts a specialist team dedicated to servicing high-end architectural builders such as D J Hewitt. As well as providing a wide range of materials including in this instance cedar cladding, Carters supplied pre-nailed frames. The Carters pre-nailed frame and truss plant, dedicated to Canterbury, provides framing, mid-floor materials and trusses which are largely complete prior to delivery to site, reducing waste and saving on build time. The Rockcote Exterior Render from Resene Construction Systems complements the cedar cladding. Applied by Licensed Building Practitioner Julian Robertson of Get Plastered, the premium exterior cladding system offers homeowners a construction material that is BRANZ appraised and conforms to the Department of Building and Housing guidelines for lightweight construction in NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
Canterbury. Low maintenance and versatile, this plaster facade features the premium Rockcote finishing system that allows it to be pre-coloured in the Resene range. ‘This system offers homeowners complete peace of mind’, shares Mike Olds, Resene Construction Systems General Manager. ‘Our OnSite Assistance programme provides added surety to each and every project, not just during the construction process, but again two years after completion when a member of our team returns to review the project and offer advice and support to the homeowner.' Daryl turns to Resene Constructions Systems time and time again, for their high-quality product and their attention to detail. As specialists in the laying of all types of concrete, I Pave Concrete & Asphalt came on board to add the finishing touches to the exterior and to complete the driveways and pathways, which navigate each side of the house.
ABOVE The well planned open nature of the upper level allows for seamless interaction of the living spaces. Expona commercial tread-plate vinyl tiles from Nextdore bring the warmth and texture of real wood to the space.

Completing the exterior is an Idaho Negative Detail fully insulated garage door from Custom Made Garage Doors. While the hardware was powder coated Warm White Pearl, the door itself was powder coated Matt Black, to integrate seamlessly with the crisp lines of the home. And Tara and Daryl are able to enter and exit their garage at the simple push of a button with the super fast and quiet Merlin Whisper Drive automatic garage door opener. Stepping inside the expansive garage there is storage galore thanks to the addition of a robust free standing wardrobe system from Simply Wardrobes. The garage is also home to Daryl’s trap door under the house, and walk-way between the house structure and retaining wall. Nestled into the side of the hill, the house is essentially suspended above ground level. ‘Like in a traditional house, the steel beams connecting the ground floor and the concrete beams of the foundation create a crawl
space’, describes Daryl, ‘but unlike a traditional build, at the back of the house there is a walkway ensuring the retaining wall is separate from the home’. Thus, should there be another earthquake, there is no chance of the retaining wall pushing against or into the home. Enhancing the modern lines of the exterior is the Butynol roofing membrane, applied by Thomas Roofing. ‘Daryl and Tara’s house is a great example of a simple roof design that has been flowed to efficiently remove water’, explains Larry Thomas. Larry and his team were on site throughout the build. ‘We applied the damp-proofing membrane to the retaining walls of the house that are below ground level, as well as to the block walls of the courtyard and planter areas to prevent moisture ingress. For every project we adopt the mindset: how would we do this if it was our own home?’ A mindset that ensures they are ticking all the boxes when it comes to quality workmanship.

With its sharp and uniform appearance, the vertically grooved Axon Panel was ideal for the exterior, sitting harmoniously with the stained cedar and Rockcote Render. They supported Daryl and his team with intricate technical details, whilst sharing his drive to achieve an outstanding final result. As Chris explains, ‘We work closely with builders to ensure they are getting the most out of our products’. Offering picturesque views of the estuary and out to sea, the balcony at the front of the property looks like an indoor sunroom but can be opened up on all sides for enjoyment of the sea air. ‘Secura Exterior Flooring is the ideal substrate for outdoor tile finishes’, shares Chris, ‘as it gives peace of mind against moisture damage’. So, regardless of the weather, this space can be enjoyed year round. Chris Brown acknowledges the commitment and vision behind this build: ‘Daryl and his team have put a lot of care into the design and build of this home to ensure it stands out architecturally, while showcasing their talents, as well as specific products that have been crafted to deliver unique and bespoke aesthetics.’ NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

THE JOURNEY BACK FROM DEVASTATION HAS SHOWCASED D J HEWITT'S TALENT, COMMITMENT TO QUALITY AND PASSION FOR INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY of the cedar on the exterior. Working with Resene products, waterborne enamel paint was used for the walls, allowing them to be easily wiped clean, while oil-based enamel was chosen for the trim for its hardwearing qualities. Durability was an important factor outside where Sikkens Oil was used to stain the cedar – ensuring it will stand up to the harsh coastal conditions. Boasting four times more structural steel than a standard hill rebuild, the house has been designed and built to withstand significant seismic movement. While the commercial TC3 foundation system is hidden from view, there is no disguising it on the inside, with the exposed central steel K-bracing system acting as a room divider on the upper level. Complemented by an impressive glass balustrade, this central structure brings industrial and sculptural aesthetics to the stairwell and entry hall. Designed and developed by Glassforce, the internal steel and glass structure isn’t the only impressive glass inclusion in the home, with the frameless glass sliding doors of the external patio providing uninterrupted views of the surrounds. Glassforce was also involved with the addition of the frameless glass balustrades, the frameless glass shower enclosures and bathroom mirrors. As an interior designer for D J Hewitt and passionate about creating a personal space for her family, Tara has achieved an interior which is both intimate and expansive with the open-plan living areas on the upper floor seamlessly interacting with one another, while crafted so as to stand as individual spaces. At the heart is the kitchen. Looking out to the private, sheltered courtyard at the back of the property, the kitchen features a lowered ceiling and, like the rest of the interior, a contemporary colour palette of black and white. Manufactured by Lyall Park Joinery, the kitchen balances Tara’s love for both contemporary and old-world elegance, and is a clear illustration of how the two can stand side by side, with the detailing of the lacquered doors and drawers a perfect partner to the eight metre long single piece of satin-finished stainless steel benchtop. Lyall Park Joinery was also involved in the manufacture of the master wardrobe, and the vanities and shelving units in the bathrooms. Like many of the sub-trades involved, Craftsman Gas Services has worked with Daryl on numerous projects, and the company prides itself on the knowledge and efficiency of its staff. ‘We know our appliances, and we aim to supply and install these efficiently’, shares Steve. ‘In this instance the appliances were chosen for their technology and efficiency.’ Able to manage and oversee all the other cablebased sub-trades, Ross McGregor of McGregor Electrical was the natural choice when it came to completing the wiring. Working in niche-market, architecturally designed homes, Ross is no stranger to a challenging job, or to the high standards expected by Daryl. ‘I am a bit pedantic when it comes to doing my job and I like to ensure everything is completed not to just a compliant level, but to the best level it can be’, says Ross. ‘I don’t call anything complete until it is perfect.’ Project managing each and every one of his construction projects, Daryl admits to being ‘extremely particular and passionate’ about what D J Hewitt Builders produces. 'Each of our projects is about collaboration and trust to achieve an outcome based on excellence and quality. While ultimately guiding our clients through an enjoyable building experience.' And with his own home currently acting as the company’s benchmark and show home, as well as gaining award-winning success for its architecture and interior detailing, he has a lot to be proud of.

uying a new home, you want to move in and make it your own. But for Kathy Graham and Cliff Bellamy, making their mark involved much more than a simple lick of paint. Having lifted the kitchen tiles, the couple ‘just kept going’, translating a humble brick country home into a modern masterpiece. At the heart of the renovation was an extension of the central open-plan space to accommodate the addition of a second formal living area. ‘It was the only structural change we made to the home’, shares Kathy. ‘Everything else was simply about working within the confines of what was there.’
‘The existing kitchen was fast approaching its expiry date’, explains kitchen designer Sarah Van der Kley of Palazzo Kitchens & Appliances. ‘It was in a partly closed-off corner at the edge of the home and the client wanted the new kitchen to open up the space, with a fresh look that would make the country house both modern and stylish.’ With the removal of the wall that blocked the kitchen from the dining room, a central island could be installed. This opened up the space for deep, long drawers on two lengths of the kitchen, providing ample storage in keeping with the owners’ minimalist and bespoke style. ‘Renovations can definitely be more

challenging’, shares Sarah, ‘as you are usually required to work within existing perimeters such as windows and walls that can't be moved. Behind the tall joinery in the corner of this kitchen is actually an angled wall that I managed to make disappear by squaring off the front of the joinery!’ Desiring a white-on-white aesthetic with mirrors, Kathy and Cliff were able to achieve not only a sense of openness but a touch of elegance. ‘The mirrored splashback reflects the rest of the room’, continues Sarah, ‘which creates an illusion of space while ensuring it stands out from the crowd. The combination of the splashback with the mirrored toekicks is one of my favourite aspects of the design: it makes the whole kitchen feel as though it is floating.’ Wanting to achieve a touch of French Country and play with the abundant natural light, the owners opted for shutters throughout the home. ‘They have a really lovely effect. And in such a sunny home allow us to control how much light is coming in.’ At 64mm, the louvres are not only functional but add considerable value to the overall style and

country atmosphere of the home. ‘The shutters add a lot of charm and character’, comments Graeme Rose from Window Treatments. ‘And, as well as controlling sunlight and providing insulation, they are a great solution for covering irregular shaped windows, such as the curved window in the living room.’ Translating Kathy and Cliff's passion and natural flair for design into a reality was Marion Freeman and the team from About Colour Paint and Design. ‘What makes this home unique’, shares Marion, ‘is the way in which Kathy and Cliff have turned a nice home into a spectacular, glamorous retreat’. Marion recalls the collaborative process where ideas and suggestions were bounced around. Kathy and Cliff were ‘fearless’, continues Marion, with a smile. ‘The master bedroom has a French romantic feel; the study is all about beautiful dark complementing tones; and the TV room is pure New York glamour!’ From the purple velvet on the couch to the warm, yet moody tones of About Colour Squire on the walls, the TV room contrasts with the crisp neutral palette in the open-plan kitchenliving-dining; yet at the same time is the perfect complement. And Kathy loves it: ‘We spend a lot of our time in here. with the powder room and bathrooms providing instant wow factor with their striking high-end bathroom fittings from Mico. Surrounding the home are the property’s expansive lawns. Carefully planted with a variety of trees, the landscaping has been crafted to be easy-care and picturesque year round. ‘The lawn is one of the first things you see when entering the property’, describes Richard Parry from Perfect Earth. ‘So it needed to make a good first impression.’ No stranger to landscaping large lifestyle blocks, Richard was charged with translating the existing garden and area into a ‘park-like setting with lush green lawn’. ‘We have specialist equipment that buries stones, clods and debris, bringing topsoil to the surface and laying seed at the same time. We then use a heavy roller to compact the seed and give a nice even finish.’ A rye fescue mix followed by a Ravensdown DAP fertilizer ensured the owners were left with a high quality product – for them to nurture. ‘Once it is all laid, it is up to the owners to make sure the area gets plenty of water and is able to flourish. In this instance the owners have obviously put in the effort; their lawn looks great!’ The surrounding lawns have provided the couple, who are keen entertainers, with a picturesque backdrop for their NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

ollowing on from the award-winning success of their previous show home in West Melton, architectural design and build company Dwell Homes set about crafting their second. Working within a moderate budget, this is a showcase of modular design and innovative thinking. ‘Currently there is limited choice for those who want to build something a little bit different but don’t have a million dollar budget to play with’, explains director Bryan Doull. ‘What we are trying to do is offer a contemporary, modern design solution which gets the most out of your budget, takes advantage of your site and doesn't compromise on quality.’ Having purchased a narrow TC3 section, Bryan set about illustrating the possibilities homebuilders have, despite the perceived limitations of their site. ‘We shouldn’t be afraid of TC3 land; we just need to understand it.’ For Bryan, this understanding comes from his close working relationship with multi-disciplined company, Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers. Engaged by Dwell Homes, they set about providing both geotechnical and structural design services associated with the foundation system. ‘The site has high ground water combined with soft soils, including a layer of peat between 2 to 2.5 metres deep’, explains Steven Roberts. ‘The site is also susceptible to liquefaction settlement, with predicted settlement increasing towards the street boundary due to deeper sandy soil layers below ten metres deep. With the issue of weak soils at shallow depth combined with moderate ground settlement due to earthquakes, an engineerdesigned concrete base slab and re-levelable timber was used as the most practical foundation system.’ Upon this safe foundation, Bryan could then build his modular masterpiece. Kirk Roberts was also involved in the engineering of the home. ‘What makes this house unique is the steel-less canopies’, continues Steven. ‘The impressive ten-metre span roof parapet along the north side of the dwelling has been created using specifically designed timber trusses. It avoids the design and construction of a conventional steel roof beam.’ A feat that Bryan is thrilled about. In terms of capitalising on the possibilities presented by the site, Bryan sought assistance from surveying and engineering company Survus Consultants. Involved in the pre-development site
survey and levels, they delineated the placement of trees and existing services on the site – important considerations for designers should they wish for these features to remain. Their findings helped to clarify Bryan’s vision for the site and informed his architectural drawings. Providing Dwell Homes with the materials to make his vision a reality was ProBuild. Part of the ITM group, they supply high quality building products to the industry, on time and at competitive prices. One of their key partners in achieving this is Akarana Timbers, a frame and truss manufacturer based in Rolleston. Together they use innovative approaches to exceed their customers’ expectations. General Manager John McCann comments that the whole team at Probuild ITM relished the opportunity to work with Dwell Homes. ‘We love a challenge and, while this project pushed us, there was real pride amongst the guys - to be involved in such a special project with such a professional company.’ From the concrete required for the foundation, to the prenailed Akarana Timbers frame and trusses, to the insulation and interior linings, ProBuild ITM worked with Bryan on it all. Of particular note, they supplied the Shadowclad cladding, found both internally and externally. Fast becoming a trademark of Dwell Home’s modular creations, the dark stained timber provides a high quality and organic finish. Modular in construction, the show home falls within the Qube Modular collection from Dwell Homes, and their relationship with ProBuild ITM enables them to provide Cantabrians with more efficient, innovative design and build solutions. ‘The modular nature of our designs means we can pre-order and manufacture components the same day a build is agreed to’, shares Bryan, ‘expediting the build time and minimising waste. All while achieving an environmentally sensitive result, constructed from natural products and materials.’ When it came to the interior of the home, Pat Smith Plastering & Painting was brought to the team for their eye for detail. Utilising GIB plasterboard throughout the interior, they translated the shell of the home into a blank canvas for painting. ‘We supply the whole package’, explains director Pat Smith. ‘We GIB, fix and stop the walls, leaving a smooth and consistent finish for the painters.’ Having worked with Bryan on all of his

clients, giving them the peace of mind that their vision is being fulfilled throughout.’ This is something that is really important to Dwell Homes’ Interior Consultant, Lena Doull. ‘There are three responses to interior design’, explains Lena. ‘“Yes”, “no” or “wow”; and it is my aim to achieve “wow” every time.’ As a fully qualified interior designer, Lena’s minimal yet effective décor is conceived and created with reference to the architectural lines of the home. ‘With an internal footprint of only 140 square metres, it was essential the interior was balanced, to enhance the feeling of space rather than overwhelm it’, she explains. And she has achieved this result with seemingly effortless style! This objective – achieving balance – was of utmost importance in the central open plan space. ‘I wanted to achieve a kitchen, a dining and a living room, each its own zone, yet interacting with the others’, continues Lena. And taking centre stage: the kitchen. Of the kitchens she has designed, this is one of Lena's favourites. Manufactured by Advanced Joinery, the galley kitchen draws on a monochromatic palette and is a functional space, designed and built for the serious home chef.
‘It is a stylish and contemporary design that has a timeless quality to it’, shares Jo Morrison from Advanced Joinery. Featuring a Glacier White Corian benchtop, Corian sink bowls, which have been separately moulded into the benchtop, and top of the range technology, this kitchen exudes efficiency and durability. Balanced by the floating shelf above the cooktop, the tactile nature of the timber adds the perfect finishing touch to a kitchen that is all about clean, crisp lines. Advanced Joinery provides a dedicated and personalised service. From start to finish, sound communication with the client is essential for a successful project; and they work hard to combine the client’s ideas with the latest trends and products to produce an exceptional result. ‘We also believe that joinery has to be functional and complementary to all other areas of the house’, continues Jo. STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE SERVES 8
2 cups flour
¾ teaspoon salt
VANILLA BEAN CREAM
2½ tablespoons caster sugar
4 tablespoons butter, cold
1 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup cream, plus 1 tablespoon
1 cup mascarpone 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped into the cream
Preheat the oven to 180–190˚C (350–375˚F). Sieve the dry ingredients into a bowl. Press the butter and the flour mixture between your thumbs and forefingers until the mixture resembles large cornflakes. Pour over the cup of cream and bring together until just combined. Make sure you don’t over-work the dough. Don’t worry if you can see lumps of butter; that will make it all the better. Lightly dust the work surface with flour and shape the dough into a rough rectangle. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin. You want it about 2cm (1in) thick. Cut into rounds, rectangles or squares with a sharp knife or cutter, and brush with remaining tablespoon of cream. Bake on baking paper until golden, about 8–10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Cut the shortcakes in half, and serve with a good spoonful of Vanilla Bean Cream on top of the base, followed by fresh strawberries and even a scoop of sorbet. Dust the shortcake lids with icing sugar and place the lids on each ball of sorbet.
Place the cream, mascarpone and vanilla seeds in a glass or stainless steel bowl and whip until thick and soft. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge until ready to serve.
C OOK ’ S NOTE There has to be something magical about eating a fresh strawberry, just picked and still warm from the sun. The first strawberries of spring always seem to slap you with an invitation to summer. They do need to be very ripe to be naturally sweet, though. If you have an abundance, you can always make them into a purée or strawberry jam. However, one of the best ways to impress is to make shortcake — a glorious marriage of strawberries and cream.

HOW TO
MAKE YOUR OWN TREE With the festive season approaching, up-cycler Alana Shinn of Threadbare Cloak gets creative with driftwood YOU WILL NEED:
+4 0 pieces of driftwood, plus a few extras
+ Drill + 1 small nail
+ 2m length of reinforcing rod + 20cm wide slice of log
TIP:
You can decorate your tree and have it inside for Christmas, or you can leave it outside as a garden sculpture – the choice is yours!
The first step is to collect your driftwood. Pick pieces that are as straight as possible and remember no two pieces should be the same length. Gather the longest piece first: this will form the bottom branch (mine was 1.15m). From there, collect shorter and shorter pieces until you find your shortest piece (mine was 15cm), which will be the top branch. To make sure I have the right amount, at the right lengths, I lay mine out on the beach before heading home. It does pay to grab a few extra pieces just in case some break during the drilling process, especially the smaller ones. When you are ready to construct, drill holes in the centre of each piece of driftwood. Make sure you use a drill-bit the same size as your reinforcing rod. Then, drill a hole in the centre of the slice of log 3/4 of the way through, using a drill-bit slightly smaller than the reinforcing rod. Slide the reinforcing rod into the hole in your log. You may need to use a hammer to gently tap it in, ensuring it fits snuggly. Measure 30cm up the reinforcing rod from the base, and drill a small hole through the rod. Place the nail through the hole. This will hold the driftwood up and create the illusion of your trunk. Now the fun part! Slide the driftwood pieces down the reinforcing rod starting from the longest to the shortest. Arrange the driftwood branches so they are pointing in various directions to resemble a real tree; and you’re done. threadbarecloak.com

THE L AST WORD
the
RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB Following recent discussions around self-regulation in the construction industry, architect Greg Young offers an insight into why this is a step in the wrong direction
R
ecently I have been hearing far too many reports of new houses under construction being demolished part of the way through the build due to fundamental construction errors, before being started again. And this at a time when the Government is suggesting the possibility of self-regulation…. If your home is on the hills, or has any complexity to it on the flat, then you need to make sure the right consultants are involved in the design and detailing, and that the right contractors are doing the work. In the current Christchurch market this can mean pushing for a second opinion should you be presented with a process or ‘solution’ that doesn’t sit right. With such an extensive amount of work on offer in the city, it is little wonder there are some cowboys in operation and it is more important than ever to ensure those working on your project are competent. If you don’t, the outcome could be devastating. As an experienced architect my role is to work with the contractors onsite, checking on the best sequencing of construction, on workmanship, insurances, costs and payments. However, to ensure a smooth process and sound result, you also need to be secure in the knowledge that your contractor has the skills. Finding the right contractors isn’t about relying on them to tell you they can do it, it means that they have a proven track record – they have done it well, without exception, over several years. There have been some pretty tough times over the last ten years with both the
global financial crisis and the Canterbury earthquakes – and any contractor that has traded through these has proven they can run a business, as well as be good at their trade. And this is essential; as you need to be sure that your contractor will be around in the next ten years in case there are any issues. We are seeing some ridiculous proposals from some insurance companies and their consultants on how they are going to fix our quake-damaged homes. For example, Tower Insurance’s engineer proposing to winch my own house uphill after it had moved downhill in a landslip due to the earthquakes. This will end in tears. I know of too many houses where the insurance companies have ignored independent engineers in favour of attempting to undertake such ludicrous proposals, only to get six months into the repair and have to demolish the house anyway. Accepting such proposed ‘solutions’, when these are not commonly-used construction techniques, will more than likely end up causing long delays and costing you money. I’m all for innovation, but not for taking unacceptable risks. My advice for all is to use people that have proven that they know what they are doing. We should have learnt some never-to-berepeated lessons from the leaky building debacle…. The question is: have we? Or are we heading down the same road all over again? 03 384 7879 | young.co.nz
