Welcome to our first issue for 2014! During the production of this issue, someone reminded me of the age-old saying, “beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” And never is this statement truer than when applied to our homes.

Whilst all houses are essentially created and constructed using the same core materials, they evolve into a ‘home’ becoming a canvas for our individual personalities and taste. Our preference for geometric prints over spots, or bold colours over monochromatic texture is what makes us unique. It is also what makes the building process and the styling of our homes so exciting - no two, despite the basic fundamentals, will ever be the same. This issue we showcase two homes, both of which draw on the basic principle of creating a comfortable environment in which to live. One is a restoration (page 42), one is a new build (page 34). While they are vastly different in style, look and structure, the fundamentals of their make up are the same. And this got me thinking. In order to achieve and build our homes we must be inspired. We are all inspired by something, be it an item, a pattern, a saying, a need for information, or perhaps by someone. I want to know what inspires you, and what you need to know to get the basic fundamentals right. Be it how to integrate a particular soft furnishing into your home (page 20), or the showcase of a new product (page 52). Let’s make 2014 a year of inspiring information. I will look forward to hearing from you.

Perfect Ply

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Achieving a simple and sophisticated aesthetic, plywood is emerging as a must-have for interiors

Best Ply Beach-Smooth was used in conjunction with concrete to achieve a warm interior with industrial undertones. OPPOSITE Best Ply Beach-Smooth, has been used once again for a minimal and stripped back aesthetic.

Styling and photography by Katie Sporle, Lightbox Creative

wallcoverings all about ply

Long regarded as a dependable construction and utility material, it wasn’t until the experiments of mid-century designers (most notably furniture makers Charles and Ray Eames), that plywood was propelled into the spotlight. From furniture in the late 40s and 50s, ply was then used as lining material for utility areas before becoming the sophisticated interior product we know today. Readily available, cost effective and lightweight, this sustainable material has gone from drab to fab. The simple and raw wood finish has seen this light coloured wood become an interior hit. From ceiling linings, to kitchen cabinetry, to stairwells, walls and furniture, ply can be perfectly paired with even the most industrial of interior materials – ensuring versatility and appeal no matter what your style. Fusing the natural warmth and durability of real wood panels with

a unique translucent surface coating, decorative interior company Bestwood are the go-to when it comes to interior ply in New Zealand. We talk to product manager, Paul Kennedy about their offerings.

Q

What is Best Ply? Best Ply is manufactured in New Zealand using glued together radiata pine veneers. Adjacent veneers have their wood grain rotated relative to adjacent layers up to 90 degrees. This alternation of the grain is called crossgrain and has several important benefits: it reduces the tendency of wood to split when nailed at the edges; it reduces expansion and shrinkage, providing improved dimensional stability; and it makes the strength of the panel consistent across all directions. There are usually an odd number of veneers so that the sheet is balanced, which reduces warping.

READILY AVAILABLE, COST EFFECTIVE AND LIGHTWEIGHT, THIS SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL HAS GONE FROM DRAB TO FAB FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

14

all about ply Best Ply Beach-Smooth was chosen to create a minimal, clean line look in this paired back renovation.

AVAILABLE IN THREE FINISHES ACROSS TWO PROFILES, SMOOTH OR GROOVED, THERE IS A BEST PLY OPTION FOR EVERY HOME CLASSIC Uncoated high appearance panel allowing flexibility on coating selection.

PURE Factory applied clear coating for a visible natural wood grain finish.

Q BEACH Factory applied blonded translucent coating with visible wood grain finish.

Best Ply comes in two sheet profiles, can you tell us more about these? While both the smooth and grooved profiles will bring warmth to an interior they achieve two very different looks. Best Ply Smooth: The Best Ply smooth profile design is just that, it is a 2400x2700mm length panel, with a smooth finish. This unobtrusive profile design is suitable for any interior space, as it blends into its surroundings. From an inner city apartment to the kiwi bach, it is a versatile profile that would make a statement in any interior. Best Ply Groove: As it reflects the look and feel of a bi-gone era, the Best Ply groove profile instantly brings texture to your space. It is just as comfortable in a colonial home as it is in an industrial inspired conversion.

Q

How do I know which finish is best for my project? Finishes are a personal decision so choose the material that works for you both visually and financially. That, of course, is the rule for all materials. Architecture should be something that is built to last – permanence is a word people need to remember. The longer a

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

space should last for, should impact the type and look of your selected material. For example, a retail space will often be fitted with materials that may look fun now but not so great in a few years time, whereas a living room should be well designed to look great, now and long into the future. Think of plywood in that context and you’re on your way to making a well-informed decision.

Q

Where, and how, can I use Best Ply? Best Ply is ideally suited for interior use as a wall or ceiling lining, achieving a natural and warm look of wood, the result is modern and clean, with a touch of nostalgia. One of its greatest benefits is that the possibilities for use are endless – from whole walls, to features, to cabinetry, to shelving and more.

Q

How does interior ply differ from the ply from the hardware store? Plywood is a strong, lightweight material, which unlike other woods won’t split, crack or crumble – when you purchase a sheet of plywood you know exactly what you are getting. Broadly, plywood can be categorized into two types,

exterior and interior. Typically interior plywood has been made using glues that are resistant to bacteria, mould and moisture. While some interior plywood’s can be purchased from the hardware store, opting to work with a material such as Best Ply ensures you are integrating a product into your home that has the right grading and adhesives for your needs, offering peace of mind to your home project. Best Ply also ensures you are working with an environmentally certified product.

Q

Is there on going maintenance required with Best Ply? No not really, however for factory applied finishes (Pure and Beach) the coating needs to be cleaned. For this, you can use a diluted solution of warm water and liquid detergent applied with a non-abrasive sponge, followed by a fresh water rinse. If minor damage to factory applied finishes occurs a touch up spray can is available in Pure and Beach finishes. Where a Classic finish (uncoated) is used you will need to follow cleaning and maintenance advice from the applicable coating system supplier. bestwood.co.nz FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

cladding all about ply

Ply Outdoors From statement interiors to beautiful exteriors, plywood does it all While the warmth and familiarity that comes with wood is not a new concept for our home’s exterior, the ease of installation, versatility and lightweight construction properties which plywood cladding offers is hard to surpass. With our interiors embracing plywood as a decorative lining and go to material for everything from walls to ceilings, to cabinetry and more, it is little wonder that we are seeing our exteriors do the same.

aesthetically and sustainability driven products. As market leaders, they offer a vast array of wood based building products including plywood, and most notably Shadowclad Plywood Cladding. The physics of lightweight construction mean that when the walls of your home start moving in an earthquake, they don’t gain as much momentum as a heavier wall, which in turn makes your home’s bracing more effective as it doesn’t have to work as hard to restrain the walls movement. Ultimately meaning the wall won’t move as far, or as fast, or for as long; thereby reducing damage. With the earthquakes identifying a need to build our homes with lightweight construction materials,

PLYWOOD OFFERS PEACE OF MIND, BEING LIGHTWEIGHT, STRONG, DURABLE AND AESTHETICALLY DESIRABLE

Shadowclad plywood offers peace of mind, being lightweight, strong, durable and aesthetically desirable.

LOOK & DESIGN

CUSTOM TILED SHOWERS

Available across a range of sheet sizes, profiles and finishes, Shadowclad offers a wide range of design flexibility. Depending on your desired aesthetic and design of your home, Shadowclad offers two distinct profiles – texture and texture groove. Expansive sheets of texture will achieve a bold modern exterior of seamless details, ideal for highlighting architectural lines; while texture groove will create a more tactial effect similar in look and feel to weatherboards or a board and batten style finish.

Shadowclad plywood panels provide a beautiful, natural wood exterior cladding that is well suited to most architectural styles. Adding street appeal to any home whether used alone or accented with other building materials.

Across the two textural profiles, Shadowclad is also available in two surface finishes assisting you in perfecting your desired exterior colour: Natural – an uncoated panel suitable for coating with high quality penetrating stains and paints. Prime – a specially formulated powder coat primer that is applied to the sheet surface, forming a durable bond and moisture resistant surface suitable for top coating with exterior acrylic paints and film forming stains. The powder-coating process seals the sheet surface and edges offering a protective barrier for a drier more consistent surface on which to apply topcoats. While saving time and money as traditional on site wet primers are not normally required. Whether used alone, or accented with other cladding materials this exterior ply product will add personality and street appeal to any home. chhwoodproducts.co.nz

The Shadowclad range can be used for cladding as well as for structural bracing purposes, giving increased peace of mind to the homeowner, while achieving the desirable aesthetics that wood based cladding have provided to New Zealand homes for generations.

Rugs, Rugs, Glorious Rugs Lucinda Diack steps inside a world of rugs and gets expert advice on how to successfully incorporate this soft furnishing into the home

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

on the floor Growing up in a home where rugs were as much a part of the interior décor as furniture, I have a love and fondness for this soft furnishing that puts it above all others. Pendant lights, bar stools and cushions I can live without, rugs, never. They are the perfect way to unite furniture, add atmosphere to your interior, or simply bring a new lease of life into a room. From bedroom accessories, to space definer, there is a rug for every purpose and there is no such thing as too many rugs! From Persian, to contemporary, to animal skins there is a raft of rugs available – the challenge is knowing how to incorporate it into your space successfully. Interior designer Lucy McMahon of Frobisher Interior comments, “when selecting a rug it is important to decide where you want the rug to go, as this will determine the texture you are looking for. Shorter cropped styles are more practical in high traffic and high use areas, while rugs with a longer pile and more texture, are better in areas where you want softness and ‘loungeability’. Don’t be afraid to use circular rugs,” she continues. “They can look very effective in living areas that have difficult shaped furniture, in entrance ways that are not perfect in shape, or spaces that have angled walls. In a sitting area, where possible, it is always looks best to have the rug running underneath the furniture, as it will help make your space appear bigger, less cluttered and more purposeful.” For Casual and Country interior designer, Shelley Rolston, selecting the perfect rug is about thinking about the space as a whole. “Make sure you measure your space, and get the right size for your room. But most importantly be brave in your choice! Go for a simple rug with punchy colours and interesting textures,” she shares. “You can then bring it all together with cushions, lamps and artwork.”

The Experts With such an array of colours, sizes and types on the market we talked to three of the best when it comes to rugs, in order to bring you the latest in looks, patterns and textures.

on the floor Designer Rugs Renowned for their spectacular collaborations, Designer Rugs have long worked with high profile designers to create “artwork” for the floor. “We want to create a unique vibe,” comments Laura Furey, “and collaborating with these types of designers has enabled us to think outside the box. Regenerating rug design so that it is synonymous with style.” “Our homes are becoming more diverse when it comes to space,” continues Laura, “hence, communal areas can facilitate a mixture of rug shapes and sizes, anchoring the furniture and defining the area. It is important however not to forget hallways, stairwells and landings. They are somewhat misinterpreted as uninhibited pathways, but can provide a chance to inject a small amount of design and colour as a flow on effect. Propelling you forward, as well as connecting individual spaces.” When integrating a rug into the home, Laura is quick to point out that “symmetry is the key to any long lasting design, so everything in your space needs to relate. Patterns and textures need to communicate with your space and furniture. If the furniture is heavily decorative a more textured or plainer rug would suit, however if the space is minimalistic, you can anchor the

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

furniture with a bold print or allow for a lot of colour. Decide what the space represents to you; is it eclectic, modernistic, or is it older and more conventionally inclined.” “Your rug needs to connect with your furniture, not create another entity to it, so allow your rug to sit at least 300mm under the front of your couch.” While bold geometric rugs are topping the chart in popularity at the moment, Laura predicts we will see these subside as we head into winter, “leading the way for finer textures and muted colour tones. These will achieve an unpretentious and demure ambience, as well as a sense of earthy warmth.” By using New Zealand wool, Designer Rugs are able to produce an infinite variety of intricate designs, structures and carvings, to give a unique finish, transforming a rug or carpet into a stunning work of art to underline and enhance the beauty of its surroundings. In addition to their internationally renowned designer collections, Designer Rugs also offer affordable inhouse ranges, and creative collections of handtufted and handknotted rugs across a wide variety of styles, influences and sizes. As Laura states “when it comes to rugs and what you want to achieve, we have opened Pandora’s box!”

on the floor

Dilana Rugs For Hugh Bannerman of Dilana the simple act of purchasing a rug for the home is all about not being afraid. “Think of it as an opportunity,” he comments. “So many people make the fatal mistake of going neutral when it should be about thinking outside the square.” “Balancing and understanding colour in the home can be difficult,” shares Hugh, “and often the introduction of a new, or unexpected colour can create something truly special. In a recent home we worked with, the client wanted a large area rug that had very little colour in it so as not to distract from the surrounding art collection. While the neutral option worked fine, when we tried the suggested orange rug it totally transformed the space. It brought out new colour stories in the paintings and ensured what was on the floor was reflecting the same design attitude that was being played out in the rest of the home.” With a portfolio of designers and hence a vast array of designs, Dilana Workshop offers everything from handtufted rugs, to area carpets, to dyeinjected carpet skins. “Dye injection is a method of manufacture that provides a seamless connection to today’s digital design culture,” shares Hugh. “This process breaks down the boundaries of conventional carpet design, creating a unique aesthetic in contemporary carpet. As almost all of our pieces are designed by fine artists, as unique pieces or limited editions, this form of manufacture allows our consumers to have access to a beautiful designer floor covering at an affordable price.” Like his counterparts, Hugh is quick to recommend and point out the use of New Zealand wool in his products. “It cleans well, is resilient and of course has the benefits of being locally grown. While we do have some rugs made offshore in Germany, Poland and Thailand, the majority of our rugs are made right here in Christchurch,” he continues. “The off-shore manufacture simply allows us to offer different techniques and hence price-points.” The way in which we live and interact with our homes has changed over recent years, with central open-plan spaces replacing intimate living areas. “Rugs are a great way to create a sense of space within these open plan areas, but you need to be careful when considering your rug size,” shares Hugh.”Too big and

you can flood the space and make your furniture feel insignificant, too small and it can look out of place. The perfect sized rug will provide an anchor for the furniture and define the area, while still maintaining an open-flow throughout. Rugs are a wonderful addition to the home, no matter what your interior style, they provide an acoustic layer, as well softening some of the more industrial materials and surfaces that we are now including in our homes. And of course they are a great way to bring your interior to life.”

on the floor Ascend Rugs For Ascend Rugs it is all about the client. “Depending on the room and the customer we can offer rugs with a 10cm long pile, and rugs that are very low in profile – each one is custom designed and unique,” comments John Grainger. “We had one client who requested a rug for their home in Maui, Hawaii,” he continues. “Inspired by the shape and colour of coral, the result was three floor rugs, which had been intricately designed and cut to represent this unique offering from the sea.” Producing handmade rugs in any colour, any size, any shape and any design, has seen Ascend export their luxurious creations as far afield as the UK, Taiwan, Canada and the USA. A notion, which ensures they are kept on top of trends from all around the globe. “The markets in the USA vary widely but at the moment we are seeing bright colours being used in Florida and more traditional colours and looks in the North Eastern states.” John comments that “the prevalence of hard floors in many modern homes, and the use of sleek, minimalist furnishings has meant feature, textured rugs are often used to soften, reduce noise and to add a colour highlight to a room.” With a focus on bespoke design paired with the finest of NZ wool, bamboo, alpaca and silk, the result is a contemporary rug that brings softness to a room, and a touch of luxury underfoot.

product showcase kitchens

Surface Spotlight Q

What is Corian? In simple terms, Corian is a solid, seamless, nonporous product manufactured by global company DuPont. It is made from natural minerals and acrylic resins.

Q

Where can I use this surface material? Generally Corian is used as a benchtop surface, predominantly in kitchens and bathrooms, although more and more it is being used in sculleries and laundries as well. I have seen a couple of absolutely beautiful kitchens where Corian has also been used on the front of the drawers and cupboards. Outdoor kitchens are also becoming more popular. And I’ve seen one house that used a large piece as a translucent sliding door between rooms, which looked amazing! FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Q

So, Corian is no longer just a surface material? We also have a range of elegant sinks and basins that are made of Corian. These can be seamlessly integrated into a Corian benchtop for a consistent surface. The basins also look great sitting on top of a Corian vanity top in bathrooms.

Q

Am I limited when it comes to colour and pattern for my Corian surface? We currently have nineteen different colours and patterns across three different ranges. There is the Whites range, which has the classic Glacier White, creamier Cameo Beige and Architects White. Our Patterns range introduces subtle texture in a range of neutrals, while the Organics is exactly that, an organic natural pattern in a range

We talk to Nicky Duggan from Evolution of Surfaces about Corian

CLASSIC, INDUSTRIAL, MODERNIST, VINTAGE – WHATEVER YOUR STYLE PREFERENCE, CORIAN WILL HAVE PERFECT COLOUR OPTIONS

kitchens

of sophisticated neutrals, where each sheet is unique. Some of the colours are translucent, which provides added depth to their appearance. Globally there are hundreds of Corian colours available. We have been checking them out and will be adding the best of them to our New Zealand range.

Q

What about design limitations? We like to think of Corian as providing unlimited design options. It can be shaped, moulded, grooved, embossed and the joins are virtually invisible; providing a seamless look which is pretty unique. Many of the colours can also be used externally, which is great if you want an outside kitchen. Classic, industrial, modernist, vintage – whatever your style preference, Corian will have perfect colour options and can be designed to give you the look you want.

Q

Are there any tips or tricks when it comes to selecting the perfect colour? While the benchtop needs to fit with the rest of the interior colour and design scheme, it is often the product that is selected first – especially in the kitchen

LEFT Kitchen designed by Morgan Cronin featuring Corian Glacier White. BELOW A Natalie du Bois kitchen also featuring Corian Glacier White.

– as it is the most prominent part of the overall look. I am reading a book by Kelly Hoppen (a top British Interior Designer) who makes the analogy between dressing yourself and dressing your home. So perhaps an interesting place to start is by looking at the colours you have in your wardrobe and love to wear.

Q

What trends are we seeing in surface colours and patterns? Apart from white, white and white! White and grey based colours continue to be very popular, but there is definitely a trend for more rich, creamier neutrals coming though. Corian Clam Shell is a great example of this trend and looks amazing teamed with paint colours such as Resene Thorndon Cream.

Q

What kind of maintenance/care will my Corian surface require? Actually very little if a few simple guidelines are followed. For day-to-day cleaning, all that is required is a simple clean with a damp sponge or cloth. Otherwise it is just common sense stuff like not putting hot pans on the bench, or using the surface as a cutting board. The good news is that most deep cuts, stains or damage can usually be repaired, without requiring a new benchtop. The surface can also be re-polished by an authorised Corian fabricator to make it look like new at any stage. DuPont also offer a 10 year installed warranty for extra peace of mind. corian.co.nz

Giving you a really clear idea of what your kitchen could look like. Of course we can also work with you in the comfort of your own home on design options if you would rather leave this to the professionals!

Q

What is your top tip when it comes to planning a new kitchen? Have a really good think about how you work in your kitchen before you start the design process. Take note of FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

your movements when you work in your kitchen and note down things that you don’t like about your current kitchen as well as things you do like. Also look online or in kitchen magazines to get ideas, and talk to family and friends about what works well and what doesn’t work so well, in their kitchen.

Q

Is there an order in which I should select materials for my kitchen? There are no hard and fast rules around the order in which things need to be selected, however generally we have found our customers select their door design and finish first, then the colour, followed by the benchtop material and colour. Splashbacks are usually the last thing selected.

Q

Tell us about your kitchen facelifts? The kitchen facelift is what makes Dream Doors truly unique. Aside from brand new designer kitchens, we are New Zealand’s kitchen facelift

specialists. A typical facelift is where we replace all the doors, drawer fronts, panels, toe kick and benchtops – leaving the cabinets in place, giving you effectively a brand new looking kitchen without the hefty price tag. Most facelifts usually involve adding, or changing cabinets around, or converting cupboards to drawers, fitting new appliances; basically whatever the customer would like to do. Aside from the obvious cost savings of a facelift, it is also less disruptive to the customer, and better for the environment, as we are not throwing perfectly good cabinets into the landfill.

Q

What are the advantages of replacing doors? The most basic facelift is replacing the doors, drawer fronts and panels. This is a very cost effective way of giving your kitchen a fresh, clean look, and is usually completed in a day. You can totally change the look and style of your kitchen just by changing

kitchens

of a new look Before RIGHT Before this kitchen had dark blue cupboards and a rather dated raised breakfast bar. After it was fitted with high gloss white doors, a black granite top, new appliances and cupboards converted to drawers.

the doors. It can also be a great way to brighten your kitchen, you might have dark blue or aubergine coloured doors that are making your kitchen look dark and small. Opting for new white or gloss white doors, will transform your kitchen to a light bright place.

Q

Is the kitchen facelift concept limited to just the kitchen? No, not at all, the facelift can also be applied to a laundry or bathroom, and often when customers have their kitchen done we will also do the laundry and/ or bathroom to ensure a seamless and continuous look is carried throughout the home.

Q

How do I determine which areas of my kitchen need practical lighting and which need ambient? Do I need both kinds? Again take note next time you are working in your kitchen where you carry out your main tasks such as chopping and preparing food, cooking, serving and cleaning up. Areas where you

prepare food and cook, are the areas where you want good directional light that does not cast shadows in front of you. Equally you don’t want light directly in your face, but rather focussed on the work surface. Ambient lighting can help show off your kitchen, perhaps highlighting an aspect of your kitchen. These days, LED strip lighting is becoming popular and is used under wall units or benchtop overhangs or even above glass splashbacks to give them real impact.

Q

Where should I start when choosing my kitchen doors? The first place to start is by looking at a variety of different kitchens, and then once you have an idea of the type of door style you would like, for example tongue and groove, plain, wood grain, high gloss etc, hop onto the Dream Doors website where we have all of our door designs available and find which one is going to give you the look you desire. dreamdoorskitchens.com

A well planned kitchen can save a lot of time and stress. So it is worth investing a little extra time at the planning stage to ensure cabinets are well-organised, ergonomically designed and are made to the highest standards in order to stand the test of time. Because Austrian company Blum specialises in the design and manufacture of kitchen hardware and organisational accessories, the comprehensive array on offer can be easily customised to suit any width of drawer up to 1.2m. Blum prides itself on its highly practical and ergonometric systems and products. In fact, all of their ORGA-LINE accessories are made specifically for drawers – as opposed to cupboards – as Blum recognises that goods stored in drawers are easier to access, more visible and, in the case of food items, more likely to be used. The range of Blum organisational accessories includes high-quality cutlery and utensil dividers, knife, plate and spice holders, pot lid dividers, oil stores, space efficient pantry solutions and much more. All of Blum’s product and storage solutions can be viewed and experienced at either of the company’s Auckland or Christchurch showrooms. blum.com

Ways With Glass Ben Larter from Canterbury Glass offers an insight into using glass in the home

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Q

Who are Canterbury Glass? Created to meet the demand for quality, friendly and reliable service, Canterbury Glass have brought together a team of glaziers with a huge amount of experience in providing high quality workmanship with a smile. We cover everything from single broken windows, to showers, splashbacks and all the way up to commercial fit-outs.

Q

What makes you stand out from the crowd? Locally owned and operated, all of our staff have been picked not just for their exceptional workmanship, but for their personality which we see as an important part of our service. We also work hard to ensure that every single job meets the high standards we have set.

glass

you are using the right type of glass. We only use toughened safety glass, which provides the extra strength needed to ensure your splashback lasts. The next thing to remember is that you only get one chance to get your sizing right with glass. By working with a specialist, you have the peace of mind that you are going to get it right – first time. We like to visit our clients in their home and template up the space to ensure their new glass splashback is going to be a perfect fit.

Q

When you talk about showers are these custom designs? Exactly. A number of our clients like to work outside the parameters of shapes and sizes associated with store bought showers. We are then able to work with the individual to customise a frameless shower to meet their design and space needs. Like the splashback, we use a thick toughened glass to ensure strength and durability.

Q Q

What are the benefits of using glass as a splashback material in the kitchen? Glass offers one easy surface to clean, which ensures hygiene is kept at an optimum. When using a material like tile, the grout in between the tiles is notorious for collecting every little piece of food and fat that can spit up from the stovetops while cooking. Glass achieves a clean and sleek surface, which can be reflective to help move light around the space, enhancing the size of your space, or frosted for a more textured finish. The options are expansive.

Q

Why should I use a glass specialist for my kitchen splashback? Due to the busy nature of the kitchen, your splashback can take a lot of knocks so first things first, it is important

GLASS ACHIEVES A CLEAN AND SLEEK SURFACE, WHICH CAN BE REFLECTIVE TO HELP MOVE LIGHT AROUND THE SPACE

What is your top tip when it comes to shower design? Uncluttered and clean! Custom designed frameless showers are surprisingly not that much more expensive than some of the packages offered by retailers, and can bring a touch of bespoke design to your space. We come out and do an obligation free measure and quote and discuss what you are trying to achieve. From there we work with you to design something that is not only functional but aesthetically cohesive with the rest of your bathroom.

Q

When using glass in the kitchen, or bathroom am I limited when it comes to colour? Absolutely not. While in the bathroom we find most people opt for clear glass to maintain a clean, uncluttered look, it is possible to integrate frosted areas for privacy, and colour. Reds, greens, and shades of blue have, in recent years, been popular for kitchen splashbacks. Essentially the choice is yours, as we can colour your glass to any Resene colour you like. canterburyglass.co.nz FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Smaller, Smarter, Better Built by Carpe Diem, this new home is all about showcasing a better way to build and live

For many the notion of building is a daunting task. However with the revolutionary Smarter Small Home initiative from James Hardie, it doesn’t have to be as daunting as one might imagine. And for Christchurch builder Steve McMillan, it is an initiative he and his team at Carpe Diem Homes, are very passionate about. “If we are smart about what we build, homeowners will live in healthier more efficient environments,” states Steve. FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

With this in mind size really does matter, the smaller the better. “While some might see it as a compromise to build smaller,” continues Steve, “it should be viewed as building to satisfy needs. How big does your home really need to be? Our homes should be about building quality, energy efficient houses which are healthier and more affordable to live in.” For Steve and his team, they have undertaken a number of Smarter Small Home builds, including their show home

in Sovereign Palms (featured here) and their newly completed display home in Pegasus Town. “We are also building a home in St Andrew’s Hill which embraces this concept,” shares Steve. “As the Smarter Small Home concept is based on a modular construction this home can be two storey to satisfy the needs of the homeowner, and still meet the standards of being a Smarter Small Home.” The modular nature of this building concept enables homeowners to build

on the standard floor plan and tailor their design to suit their family needs; adding garage space, bedrooms, lounges and more; while staying within specific design parameters to keep it affordable. With principles based on minimising on-site construction there is a reduction in both waste and labour costs. “One of the greatest benefits of this initiative is the speed of build,” comments Steve. “Our show and display homes have each been completed in 12 weeks.”

The Carpe Diem build is all about showcasing a need to be smarter about what we are building. Following the Smarter Small Home concept from James Hardie, the home is not only affordable but sustainable. At 183sqm and 175sqm, this is a significant saving in time and money when compared to traditional construction time, with no compromise on layout or quality. The display home comprises four bedrooms, an ensuite, walk-in-wardrobe, bathroom, separate toilet, open-plan kitchen living and garage. “We opted to embrace the Smarter Small home Concept as we identified a need in Christchurch, and across New Zealand, to build in a more affordable manner and with renewable resources,” comments Steve. “With the cost of building continuing to rise we wanted to be providing a solution, and ensure that for future generations the dream of building your own home could still be a possibility.” Flooded with natural light, the neutral palette of the home offers a calm canvas onto which potential homeowners will be able to make their mark. With lightweight construction principles recommended by the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment, James Hardie have ensured their concept embraces emerging knowledge when it comes to building in Canterbury. One of the benefits of the Smarter Small Home design is that it uses lightweight and durable products, meaning better seismic performance when compared to traditional heavyweight construction methods and products. It is not just efficiency in building times that is seeing this concept build in popularity, as when it comes to durability the selected building products are unsurpassed. With fire resistance properties the inclusion of products such as James Hardie’s Scyon Linea Weatherboard and Scyon Stria Cladding, ensure the home not only looks good, but offers peace of mind when it comes to safety and resilience. HydraMASTER in-slab heating, mositureMASTER ventilation systems from ecoMASTER and solar energy are just some of the other features being included in Carpe Diem homes, which are designed to ensure the home is healthier, warmer and more efficient, all whilst embracing affordability. Passionate about ensuring his homes are energy efficient, Steve turned to Laser Electrical Rolleston to complete the electrical work in the Carpe Diem Show Home. The team at Laser Electrical worked with Steve to select products which would tick the energy efficient boxes, such as low energy LED lighting and HPM excel life switch-gear with illuminated switch bezels. For added peace of mind for future homeowners, a Paradox spectra alarm was installed for security.

A combination of Scyon Linea Weatherboard, Scyon Stria Cladding and Scyon Axon Panel has been used on the exterior of the home. The result is modern and clean with a hint of texture. A Perma Eco timber deck by Gracol Composites completes the look. FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

The use of renewable resources is an ongoing theme in the show home, extending right through to the deck. A quintessential element of all kiwi homes, the deck extends out from the openplan living space, providing an easily accessible outdoor entertaining area. As distributors of Perma Eco Timber decking, local Christchurch company Gracol Composites were brought onboard to craft the outdoor living area. “The 146mm width Perma Eco Timber composite Teak decking boards, with a grooved finish were chosen for its great looks and low maintenance properties,” shares Stuart Hay of Gracol Composites. “It doesn’t require any annual staining, oiling or painting, making it ideal for families who want to enjoy their garden and outdoor space without time-consuming maintenance. It is also colour fast, UV stabilized, easy to install and has a lifespan of over 50 years.” With family living in mind, the Perma Eco Timber is perfect for high traffic areas, doesn’t splinter and is anti-slip. “Perma Eco Timber looks beautiful,” says Stuart, “and is very similar

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

to natural stained timber. The hidden fixings not only add to the sleek looking design, but provide barefoot comfort.” Highlighting the deck and adding to the ambience of the exterior, is landscaping completed by design, construction and hydroseeding company, One Square Rate. “As the outdoor living area interacts directly with the interior layout of the home, our design needed to complement this,” shares owner operators Gareth Scarlett and Karl Odell. “Good landscaping should be designed around the home, and in itself make the home stand out. To complement the strong lines of this home, we opted for simple planting and an expansive new lawn.” With more understanding than ever before about how house design relates to seismic performance, and about Canterbury land, now is the time to ensure we are rebuilding with modern building methods and materials that will not only add value to our homes, but ensure we are living in healthier more efficient environments.

he Smarter Small Home is built on a modular system (not to be confused with kitset or prefabricated – all homes are built on site in the traditional manner). Being modular means that we are able to maximize efď€ ciencies and reduce waste by 80% of a standard build. Those savings are passed directly onto the home owner. The other great concept of this is that you can design your own home using the modular system. We have these modules available and are happy to show these to you, enabling us to truly understand what it is you are looking for in your new home. Everyone is different and we have a large number of innov ative ideas to change or add to existing designs (as seen on our website: www.cdcc.co.nz).

Preserving Character Retaining a sense of character around the city is builder Anthony Bown. Lucinda Diack uncovers his passion for older homes and meets one of his homeowners There is a huge difference between ‘repairs’, ‘restoration’ and ‘renovation’, and yet the three terms are very commonly used to describe work being undertaken on our older homes. These may be historically listed buildings, recognised as having heritage significance and registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, or family homes, which contain the character and history of the past. The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has very clear definitions: Repair - to make good decayed or damaged fabric using identical, closely similar, or otherwise appropriate material. FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Restoration - to return a place to a known earlier form, by reassembly and reinstatement, and/or by removal of elements that detract from its cultural heritage value. There is no recognition of renovation as a means of conserving heritage. “Without an understanding of what conservation means, and why it is important, many of the repairs being undertaken on Christchurch’s earthquake damaged heritage homes risk causing even greater damage than the actual earthquakes themselves,” comments Victoria Bliss, a heritage listed homeowner. “It is not possible

Where possible Victoria and her family tried to respect and retain the original fabric of the building. For example, broken studs or joists were left in situ and new timbers bolted to them; the original hearths were left in situ and samples of the bricks from the chimney stacks left under the floors; new piles were placed alongside the original red rock foundation stones. All new work and materials were very clearly date stamped: “having done our best to keep the building authentic we needed to ensure that future generations would not be confused as to what work was original and what was a result of the earthquakes.”

Renovate!

to treat a heritage building in the same way as a new build. The materials and construction methods of the time do not meet modern code requirements, and standard repair solutions do not fit. These homes require a step back and a whole different approach if they are to be protected for future generations as tangible evidence of the continuity between our past, present and future.” Working with Victoria on the restoration of her listed property in Lyttelton was Anthony Bown from Smith & Sons Port Hills. “Architecturally, Victoria’s property was very rare and in order to work through the damage that had been caused by the earthquake we needed to be sympathetic to the way the home had been built and work within the parameters outlined in the Temporary Protection Plan (TPP).” “A TPP is put in place to protect the heritage fabric of the listed dwelling during the construction period,” shares Victoria. “It identifies areas of the building at risk during construction work. For example windows with original hand drawn glass, original doors, architraves, flooring, stairways; and provides detailed measures to mitigate the risks to prevent damage. Even if a dwelling is not listed

WORKING ON OLDER HOMES, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET, YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH WHAT IS BEST FOR THE BUILDING it is a sensible precaution to ask the contractor to prepare a TPP as it will help preserve the character features of your home.” “The TPP meant we had to be nimble in our thinking,” comments Anthony. “and undertake the work in a totally new way.” “The floor of the master bedroom was the only remaining original kauri floor in the property”, describes Victoria. ”Dating from the 1870s it is worn and marked with the wear of generations, and now with the added scars of the earthquakes, it is a significant heritage feature,” she continues. “But the floor structure beneath it had been damaged and needed to be repaired. Rather than lift this floor and risk damaging it, the builders had to undertake the work from below, removing first the ornate plaster ceiling rose in the sitting room. The earthquake damaged ceiling was removed, the repairs completed and the rose reinstated on the new plasterboard ceiling.” For Anthony, this nimble thinking is a concept that can be applied to work undertaken on any character home around the city. And working in the Lyttelton, Banks Peninsula area, he is no stranger to the challenges that can come from these homes. “Working on older homes, you never know what you are going to get, you need to be able to work with what is best for the building, the homeowner, the Building Code standards ensuring the end result is viable for future use. So, it is important you engage a building team who are comfortable with this kind of work, and understand what character homes are all about!” Having FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

home

lovingly renovated his own 105-year-old villa into a family home suitable for modern life, Anthony has a passion for older homes that goes beyond just the day-to-day work. While our local environment is continuously changing, and many of our older homes deemed too expensive or too damaged to repair, Anthony is quick to add, “while we don’t want to lose who we are as a city, we need to ensure our character homes are being repaired in such a fashion that they meet the new building standards, while still offering all that makes them wonderful – their beautiful proportions, intimate living spaces, high ceilings, character and so forth.” For those facing a restoration this is about ensuring the heritage home is brought in line as closely as possible to the current standards.

For Victoria and her family, their restoration work wasn’t just about their love for their home and its history, “we were keen to illustrate that it is possible to practically and economically upgrade a heritage building, without affecting its heritage values.” And for many whose character homes aren’t listed, the notion of preserving is one that can still be applied. “With so much of our city having been lost, only to be replaced with modern, often sterile buildings it is comforting to be in a home which shows its life and its scars proudly as evidence of its survival,” comments Victoria. “The patina of age in these homes are part of the narrative of the buildings, and one of the few remaining tangible records of our past.” smith-sons.co.nz

DID YOU KNOW? Christchurch City Council have a special fund, the Heritage Incentive Grant, which can be applied for by owners of listed heritage buildings. This fund can help to meet up to 50% of any shortfall between EQC/ insurance pay-outs and the actual cost of the repair works required. It can also meet up to 50% of the costs of approved betterments/upgrades and maintenance works required for heritage buildings, and approved consultants’ fees.

Shower Spaces Lesley Storm from Edward Gibbon opens the door on showers

Q

Tiled or Acrylic? The first decision to make is whether to go for an acrylic lined or tiled wall shower. Both have their advantages and it will most likely come down to personal preference and budget.Tiled showers are generally larger and allow you to create an individual space by carrying the bathroom tiles through to the shower for a seamless look. All Athena tiled wall showers use an acrylic tray which is quicker to install and eliminates leakage issues that can be associated with tiled showers. If you are opting for a tiled wall shower, be sure to consider the price of the new tiles and cost of a new installation. FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

If you decide not to tile the walls inside the shower, then an acrylic wall shower is the way to go, providing a clean and crisp appearance. When compared to a tiled wall shower, the installation time offered by an acrylic lining can make them an attractive, more cost effective option.

Q

What are some of the key features I should look for when buying a shower? Generally speaking look for products that have been specifically designed to meet the needs of a New Zealand home, like that of Athena. Beware of imported

TOP Athena Lifestyle 1000x1600 2 Wall Shower with flat acrylic wall. ABOVE Athena Allora 1000 Round Moulded Wall Shower.

bathrooms products as they do not necessarily include features, or use materials, of a suitable standard for our NZ homes. Things to look for are, shower trays which incorporate properly constructed moulded up stands which prevent water leaking, this is particularly important with timber framed homes. Acrylic wall liners are not all made the same, so make sure you select a shower that has a liner with a minimum thickness of 2mm, this will avoid glue lines appearing through the liner and prevent warping of the liner from warm water. A good sturdy door seal will keep the shower alive for much longer, and keep your bathroom floor safe from a soaking.

Q

Are there different shower designs? Showers basically come in three different designs: framed, semiframeless and frameless, each which refers to the design of the shower doors and return panels. A framed shower is just that, fully framed with aluminium extrusions. The advantages being that the aluminium provides strength and rigidity to the shower. They can be seen as a less attractive option but are generally more affordable. Semi-frameless showers such as the Athena Seville and Charisma provide an attractive and stylish shower with their subtle clean lines, and are ideally suited to small to medium sized bathrooms. Frameless glass showers have captured people’s imagination and the key here is less is more. Products such as the Lifestyle and Allora showers from Athena provide a sleek un-complicated look, with their elegant glasswork, minimal joinery and stunning fixtures.

Q

What else do I need to consider? You also need to make decisions on the size, shape and height of your new shower. The feeling of space is key; if you buy a large enclosure it may cramp the rest of the bathroom, but one that is too small may feel uncomfortable to shower in. The perfect size shower will feel reasonably roomy when in, and out of it. When it comes to positioning, if you are replacing an existing shower, aim to place in the same location, as moving a shower will significantly increase the overall cost. There are numerous shapes to select from, historically the most common sizes are 900mm and 1000mm square two sided showers, in recent years round showers with curved sliding doors have become very popular. Tiled showers tend

Lifestyle 1000x1800 3 Wall Rectangle Tiled Wall. to be larger, sizes such as 1200x1000mm all the way up too 1800x1000mm. Sizes above this become more of a design and build project. With a proliferation of shower heads and slide showers available today it is important you consider the height of your shower to get the best out of your shower head. There are various shower heights available but the best way to measure is by the door height, not the overall height which includes the tray base. Athena showers have a standard door height of 1920mm, which by current industry standards is regarded as being taller/over height.

Q

How do I clean and maintain my shower? To assist with maintenance and cleaning you could spend a little extra and get your shower glass coated at installation with a product such as Vitroglaze, this is a similar system to that which is used on car windscreens, and helps prevent staining and dirt build up. Generally though you should always wipe down the shower walls and glass after use with a squeegee, and use a suitable trusted glass cleaner on the shower glass. Regularly remove your waste lid and cup assembly from your shower waste, clean and rinse it out.

ABOVE A Lifestyle shower tray which incorporates a properly constructed moulded up stand to prevent water leaking.

At the same time we recommend the removal and cleaning of the drip seals on the shower doors, if the seals are not looking their best, then simply pop into you local Edward Gibbon store and order a replacement. athena.co.nz | edwardgibbon.co.nz FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

Clean, Green Energy As the experts in all energy efficiency matters we talk to Right House about the benefits of solar energy

Q

How can you help me when it comes to installing a Solar PV system? Right House has a unique structure which allows us to deliver an end-to-end service to customers. We are in control of the scoping, supply, and installation of the whole system; ensuring we can meet residential, commerical and rural needs. Our aim is to make the process easy, with the first step being a roof assessment where we will analyse your energy usage. From there, an average solar yield and economic optimisation is provided. After the scoping work is completed, we present a detailed plan of the proposed layout for the panels and a position to install the inverter.

Q

How do I know which system is right for me? To size a PV system it is necessary to understand your current energy use and determine where this energy is being used. This is where it is important to ensure you are working with a reputable

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

company who can assess your individual situation and provide a detailed solution. To maximise the economics of a Solar PV system, exported energy should be kept to a minimum, so the more you can use yourself the better. Kiwis are starting to understand the value of Solar PV, and we are seeing more enquiries coming from people building new homes and wanting to incorporate Solar PV into their plans early on. Solar panels are easily installed onto an existing roof, they are unobtrusive, require minimal intervention and have no moving parts, they offer reliable, long term energy production.

Q

When we talk about the benefits of Solar PV, this isn’t just about being able to generate your own energy is it? There are many benefits; firstly the ability to take control of your own energy and knowing you’re locking yourself in for cheaper power for the next 25 years always makes people feel good.

technology

Other benefits include: Immediate savings. After the initial cost of the system you continue to enjoy cheaper energy for years to come. We are seeing customers saving 40% upwards on their energy bills. This saving varies of course depending on the size of the system and the customer’s electricity usage pattern. The Return on Investment (ROI) on a Solar PV system is more attractive now that the price of solar panels has dropped. Right House estimates a 6-10% ROI but is seeing 10-12% presently, especially in rural installations. Increasing the capital value of your property. People are seeing the benefit of purchasing a home with solar already installed.

The power you generate but don’t consume, you can export back to the electricity grid and receive a credit from your retailer for that excess electricity.

Q

Do you install Solar PV Systems all over NZ? Right House has branches throughout New Zealand. In the Canterbury region alone, we have installed, or are currently installing a total of almost 150kW of solar panels. This is saving customers approximately 180,000kW hours per year, a collective saving of approximately $50,000 per year. We also work with local Christchurch company EnaSolar who supply us with a range of leading edge technology solar inverters. Manufactured here in New Zealand, their inverters have built in wi-fi offering homeowners web-based PV

system monitoring and reporting, which is proving popular.

Q

Tell us a bit more about solar in the dairy shed. We have seen interest from the rural sector significantly increase in the past 18 months. Farms are large electricity users so investing in a Solar Power System makes economic sense. A recent installation of a 28kW Solar PV System on a large Waikato Dairy Farm (milking 1100 cows) promises substantial savings for the owners. It is estimated to give them savings of around $7,555 annually*, with a simple Return on Investment of 12.8%. * Calculations based on an energy cost of 21.6c per kW and an export price of 0.6c a kW. righthouse.co.nz/solar

automation technology

Home Automation UNCOVERED Lucinda Diack talks to the experts about home automation and why this technology is making the way we live easier

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

When it comes to home automation, I know very little! Our 1970s home is barely capable of running wi-fi let alone being powered by a touch-pad system. Our TV sits on the floor above a tape player, our stereo system has a space for cassettes and as far as multi-room audio goes, we can flood the outdoor entertaining area with sound if the stereo is at full volume and all the windows open. However, these days I am far from the norm! For the average Kiwi homeowner whether they are building or renovating, future proofing their homes with technology is quickly becoming a need, not a want. Yesterday it was all about smart kitchens, today it’s all about smart homes. It’s about the lifestyle that comes with a custom installed automation system offering you the ability to rid yourself of those five remote controls that adorn your coffee table, listen to music in the bath at the touch of a button, set mood lighting by the push of another, light up your house when you arrive home and on a cold day turn on your

home heating before you leave the office. So where do you start, and for those of you like me, what does it all mean? As market leaders in Christchurch, Automation Assist are able to guide even the most technology illiterate homeowner through how to integrate an automation system into their home. “Our focus is on making the home user-friendly, efficient and simple,” says Sales and Marketing Manager, Josiah Murray. Opting to integrate a home automation system into your new build may be as much about meeting someone else’s needs as your own. “Future proofing your home by having good structured cabling installed is critical. It allows you (or a future owner) the option to add automation and control in the future while also adding value to the home by ensuring it is ready for emerging technologies.” “Your automation system should simplify the daily use of services in your home,” comments Josiah. “Whether this

technology automation

ABOVE Control4 offers the ultimate home automation solution. By integrating everything from lighting, audio-visual, heating and security, a smart house by Control4 creates personalised experiences that provide added comfort, savings, convenience, and peace of mind. Start small by automating just your family room or expand into whole-home automation. Control4 is built to grow as you go.

is your lighting, electric blinds, heating, your security system or multi-room audio visual systems, these can all be made to work together and integrate seamlessly. This is not to say that all automation systems need to include all of the above, you may simply want multi-room audio and your security needs to be met by this technology, or just remotely control your heating. We then take your needs and combine your services through a control system interface.” There are number of options when it comes to your control interface, these range from programmable wall switches to touch screens and portable devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Depending on the scale of your system and your personal preference, a combination of these may be used. By being able to access your system remotely you can monitor and control the systems in your home from the office, the bach or even overseas!

With its ability to be retrofitted into existing homes as well as being designed into new homes, Control4 is emerging as one of the largest and fastest growing automation systems in the world. “Control4 is easy to use, scalable and affordable,” comments Josiah. “It allows the control of third party products in your home such as TV’s, heat pumps, irrigation systems, security and more, all through a single remote control or portable device.” The Control4 interface is also available on iPad, iPhone,Android and PC/Mac. “Home automation systems can also be used to achieve a much greater level of security,” comments Josiah. “For example, when you leave your home and set the alarm, your system can be programmed to turn off your lights, heating and audio-visual systems, and vice versa when you return. It can also be set to schedule lighting and blinds when you are away to give the appearance of someone being home. Lighting can also be linked to your alarm so that if

it is activated your home can light up automatically.” However, not all automation companies are born equal so when choosing your company make sure that they have the right experience, have a credible and long term presence in the market and have a well proven and well supported range of products and suppliers. Choosing the right service provider is “mission critical” to ensure you have their support into the future. Working closely with renowned architects and designers across the city, Josiah and the team at Automation Assist can’t stress enough the importance of talking to your home automation specialist as early as possible in the design stage. “If everyone knows from the outset where cabling needs to go, this forward planning will reduce time and cost at the consent stage and beyond, as your builder is aware of what is going into the home from the beginning.“ automationassist.co.nz FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

heating

Healthy Heating New underfloor technology is changing the way we think about warming our homes Heating our homes is a simple enough concept. However, did you know that in many instances traditional forms of heating – a fireplace, heater, heat pump – are designed to heat the air only? While in theory this may seem suitable, the reality is that in many cases this form of heating isn’t warming your floor, furnishings or even you. In most instances it will be creating pockets of uneven heat – where the living spaces and bedrooms might be warm and cosy, but the hallway and bathrooms require you to dash through in haste, or put on an additional layer of clothing. In days gone past the idea of incorporating, or operating, underfloor heating in the home has conjured thoughts of instant dollar signs – well not any more. For Martin Reilly and his team at ecoMASTER, their hydraMASTER in-slab heating is offering Kiwis a home heating alternative that is quickly gaining momentum. “Essentially this system turns your floor slab into a heating source,” comments Martin. “Using a heat pump, the system heats water circulated through pipes laid in the concrete slab of your home. The result is an even heat from one end of your house to the other.” Unlike traditional underfloor heating, this new generation of technology, modern hydronic in-slab heating, FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

generates heat energy from the air at a ratio of around 4 to 1. “In other words,” shares Martin, “for every kilowatt used to run the heat pump, the heat pump delivers four kilowatts of heat energy to your floor. In comparison, an electric system delivers one kilowatt out, for each one in. So what would cost $400 with an electric cable system, costs only $100 for the same amount of heat. We are yet to uncover another heating system which can produce more home comfort for anywhere near the cost of our system.” Identified as one of the largest contributors to comfort in the home, surface temperature is important to create a healthy living environment. “We all know how cold we suddenly feel when our feet are walking over cold flooring. By transforming your entire floor into a giant radiator, the largest surface in your home is instantly offering comfort, ensuring your surfaces, family and air are being heated,” comments Martin. “Heating your surfaces also significantly reduces moisture that otherwise might be in your carpets and fostering hidden mould and mildew growth, providing you and your family a healthier and warmer home.” For many Kiwis the ambience that comes from a fireplace is a must when it comes to home heating, and one of the greatest benefits of hydraMASTER is that

you can still have the flame. “The system has been designed to be self-leveling,” explains Martin. “The slab will always warm the coolest areas faster, so should you want to have a fireplace or heater operating in one area of the home, the slab will adjust automatically. We have a number of clients who leave the slab on all year-round,” he continues. “While in the winter they might have it set at around 23 degrees Celsius, in the summer they can turn it down to 18 degrees, all while maintaining a comfortable level of living in the home.” Based on a 185sqm (living space) home the technical running cost is $717. When compared to an air-based heating system (in the same home design) operating at an annual running cost of from $1,500 - $2,600, the savings and health benefits are hard to ignore. ecomaster.kiwi.nz

TOP LEFT The in-slab heating uses an air-to-water heat pump to heat water that is circulated through a series of pipes laid in the concrete floor slab. TOP RIGHT A concrete slab is being poured over the hydronic pipes that are laid over the top of the insulation.

Displaying

Drawers We turn an old set of drawers into wall hanging display units

YOU WILL NEED: Old Desk or Cabinet Drawers Wallpaper PVA Glue Craft Knife Fine Sandpaper Screws

We used Feel Good 48323 from Aspiring Walls, as our wallpaper of choice, however you could use a range of different wallpapers for a bold and colourful look.

With an old desk set to be broken down and turned into fire wood, the drawers were repurposed into multiple uses. From the smallest being used as a dumping ground for the day’s mail on the kitchen bench to the larger ones being used as wall hanging display units. To start, gently sand the surfaces – inside and out – removing any sticky residue or rough edges. Wipe down the inside of the drawer to remove any dust. Depending on the outside of your drawer you could apply a coat of varnish to give it a more polished look. Once you are satisfied with the exterior of your drawer and the inside is clean and dry, it is time to wallpaper. Lay your wallpaper over the opening of the drawer and carefully cut the wallpaper down to a more manageable size to work with. From there you simply need to gently press the wallpaper down into

the base of the drawer – paying careful attention to the corners. Once your wallpaper is firmly in place, use a craft knife to trim away the extra wallpaper. When your wallpaper is trimmed to a perfect fit – it should be sitting flush with the drawer sides – gently pull it out and apply PVA to the base of the drawer. Once the surface is evenly coated in glue, press the wallpaper back into place and gently apply pressure, ensuring all corners and lengths of the wallpaper are being smoothed out over the PVA. Repeat this process with as many drawers as you like. Once the PVA has dried you are ready to hang the drawers on the wall. We did this by screwing the drawers to the wall – one screw in each corner of the drawer. You could also stack the drawers on top of one another and use small clamps to hold them together to create a bookcase. FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

construction building

When Your Build Goes Wrong What you need to know to ensure your building project goes smoothly Building or renovating is a stressful, timeconsuming, costly process, and as a result disputes are not unusual. With your dreams and in many cases life-savings on the line it is critical to ensure you are engaging a construction team, who you can openly communicate with, is reliable and capable of doing the job. It is also essential your contract is set up correctly; as for many this is where problems can occur. The contract you have with your construction team essentially outlines who is responsible for what, the costings, timings and so forth, so make sure you put the time and effort into getting this right. Ensure you are comfortable with the terminology throughout, your contract might state work is to be completed in a ‘reasonable’ timeframe – however what is reasonable to one party may be entirely different for another. Clive Barrington from the Registered Master Builders Association, Canterbury comments “there are generally two ways to run a building contract, but there are FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

also contracts which have elements of both so make sure you are comfortable with what you are signing.”

FIXED PRICED The problem here is, what is the contract based on. While the list can be extensive when it comes to things to consider, here are few questions to ask yourself, and your builder… Are the drawings and specifications crystal clear? Are any excluded items made clear? Has the builder included everything? Is the builder’s quote clear and clean? Has a start and finish date been set? Are some trades or materials being supplied by the owners? For alterations and additions is it very clear as to where you stop and start? How are the payments set up? Are they on a monthly basis or staged? Is there a clause in the contract

for variations? If so how are they managed? Are consultants such as an architect employed to certify payments?

COST PLUS OR CHARGE UP While most of the above items are still relevant here, the builder is not held to a fixed price, in other words you are paying for what you get. However… Have you agreed on an hourly rate? Have you agreed on different hourly rates for different people? Have you agreed on a contractor’s margin? Have you any idea on how long the project will take? Have you set a budget? And so forth. For Clive, when something goes wrong in your build it is all about communication. “Generally there is fault on both sides and before going further,

building

it is important that both parties are honest with each other and try to reach a middle ground.” If you aren’t happy with your builders work, or have an issue with one of the sub-contractors work then call a meeting to discuss this. Under contractual law you must give your builder a chance to rectify any defective workmanship – simply getting somebody else in to rectify a problem is not the answer. Under the Building Act a builder is liable for any defective work for up to ten years, so it is not in their interests to cut corners. While the Disputes Tribunal may be an appropriate forum for minor non-technical disputes, the first step in resolving an issue is self-resolution. There are three simple steps to selfresolution of a dispute: Check your facts Communicate Record any agreement in writing

By recording the meeting in writing there is the assurance that key issues have been accurately addressed and solutions agreed upon. Should the agreement not be adhered to enforcement is made easier. “Ensure your builder is affiliated to an organisation such as the Registered Master Builders Association,” comments Clive. “These contractors have a strict code of ethics to adhere to and work by and have a complaints process you can go through should all else fail.” The complaints process will see you be assigned an independent facilitator who will then arrange for a mediated meeting to take place. The best building contracts are the result of a good client, architect or designer, and builder working together. While building can be stressful it should also be fun, and the end result what you want.

Outer Layer Create a great first impression with expert advice on your exterior colour scheme As your roof is the most expensive and difficult component to change, begin your exterior colour selection here. Start by standing in front of your home and observing it. “If you can see the roofing pitch and it is quite prominent then it’s vital to consider how the roof and walls will work together,” shares Resene Colour Consultant, Nikki Morris. “A contrasting exterior can look great when the colours are chosen well,” says Fraser Martin of Weathermaster Roofing, “just don’t go too extreme. You want your scheme to work harmoniously as one. At the moment, when it comes to the roof, dark colours are very much on trend.” “Matching your spouting to your fascia and or roof colour is common practice, and gives the perception of the stud height being lowered, whereas if matched with the cladding colour it will appear heightened. While if you have a contrasting spouting and fascia this will give a detail line to the home,” shares Kyle Miller of Canterbury Architectural Spouting. “There are no given rules however, it is simply dependant on your desired aesthetic.” “Over the last couple of years we have seen trends for weatherboards focusing on greys and dark impact colours,” comments Nikki. “This year we are going to see more powdered blue greys, softer creams replacing brighter whites, and earth based greens slowly replacing beige and brown tones.”

PITCHED STATEMENT Where your home has a strong and dominant roof, the choice of colour will dominate the rest of your scheme. In a soothing tonal scheme of browns this exterior sees the roof and deck work as a cohesive unit, providing unity to the proportions of the home.

the last word

Where have all the baristas’ gone? Darren O’Neil ponders a topic close to his heart - good coffee I like to go out. My weekend often features one or two leisurely outings for coffee with my family and sometimes even Alfie the dog, if he is allowed. This coupled with an every second week meeting of the Racket Club – a dinner group of distinguished men – I think I have been to nearly every bar, café and new restaurant our city has to offer. My wife tells me I am a grumpy old man, but I’m disappointed. Don’t get me wrong there are some interesting and cool offerings available, but in many instances the atmosphere, and especially the coffee lets them down. Why can’t anyone make a good cappuccino anymore? It pains me to say it but they can do it in Auckland, although they drink mostly soy lattes up there. The social aspect of any city is its mainstay. Cafés, restaurants and bars have historically been the meeting ground for friends, family and business colleagues. They have been the backdrop for art movements, political dalliances and more. So are we letting the people of our city down by failing to offer them the most simple and enjoyable pleasures of life - a good atmosphere and great coffee? Atmosphere can be difficult to achieve, especially in a city with a shortage of old buildings. While new buildings are often surrounded by levelled sections and road cones. However it is not impossible, we just have to work harder to achieve it. For iconic café C1 they have found a great building and managed to draw on what they once were, and reopen with vigor and passion. Quirky and unique in so many of their offerings, it is easy to sit back and forget the earthquake-damaged city around you. Although their pancakes are a bit on the stingy side.

Also ticking the boxes when it comes to atmosphere, despite it’s location, is restaurant Passenger & Co. Tucked down the back of an industrial area out by the airport, it offers a sophisticated and interesting food experience of high quality, and is a great example of how to give the interior of a brand new building a great feel by creating an atmosphere out of nothing. Both C1 and Passenger & Co have created something that is simple and inspired. Once you walk in the door you could be in any city around the world. Escapism by café, I love that. But back to the most important question at hand… where have all the good baristas’ gone? With an abundance of new cafés in our city, surely must have come a raft of new coffee machines, however I am yet to discover the perfect cappuccino or even a very good cappuccino for that matter, most are overfull and weak, with pond scum masquerading as milk floating on the top where a thick layer of creaminess should be. Is this because we have lost a number of the younger generation and you have to be young and hip to make a great coffee? It has been suggested that if I am this unhappy with the state of coffee in our city I should stay at home and use a fancy machine – however then you lose the chance to be a part of the city. The chance to sit back, relax and take in an atmosphere. And while I might be disappointed in the state of the coffee, Christchurch is set to become a city of wondrous offerings. We just need to make sure we are rebuilding with atmosphere – then perhaps the baristas will come back. oneil.co.nz
