hen the single-use plastic bag legislation came into effect this year, some things happened. Firstly, there was a marked spike in the amount of swearing in my car. Mostly from me, I might add, arriving at the supermarket car park without my reusables. Secondly, I threw around a fair bit of casual scepticism. It’s too little, too late. Will that one thing help? Honestly, it all felt a bit hard and hopeless. But, then something else happened. Every time I went to buy something, the subject of bags came up. Whether I was celebrating the triumph of remembering, or muttering bad words while I trudged back to the car, the issue of climate change was tenaciously wriggling its way into my daily consciousness. Now, I see plastic everywhere, and little by little, my family and I are changing things. Don’t get me wrong; we are not leading the charge by any means – nevertheless, it’s those sodding bags that sparked the major shift for us. While the team and I worked on putting together the pages of our trends special feature for this issue (page 24), it struck me over and again how sustainability is no longer content to be a bullet point on a brochure. Mother Earth is on everyone’s mind, and environmental concerns are fast becoming a fundamental expectation threading through our consumer lives. It’s exciting, and as we enter a fresh new year with all its promises and possibilities, it’s hopeful. Happy New Year.

Hi Team, I just wanted to say how incredibly inspirational this magazine is! Every month I love reading people's stories and getting a glimpse into their lives and design style. There are some wonderfully bold and dedicated people out there and it's great to have a magazine capturing and recording their magic. So thanks!

S I Z E M AT T E R S We loved seeing the bach in Castle Hill village that was in the November issue. We are making plans to build a tiny home, and so it was really great to see a smaller house to get some ideas. Can we have some more? J AY A N D R O B , R A N G I O R A

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the magazine, or you could tell us about a project you have underway. In our next issue we will be giving away a copy of this beautiful book to a lucky letter writer: Email anna@27publishers.co.nz or you can write to us via our Facebook page.

ONCE BIT TEN Recently my husband and I worked with a builder to extend the deck and add French doors to the back of our house. I was worried about it as the last work we had done was a disaster, with a crew that either didn’t turn up or left early. This guy was great though and kept in touch, letting us know what was happening. Communication indeed makes all the difference! K AT E , B U R W O O D

ON THE COVER

The art of the home

A house is simply a place to live, but we’re in the business of building homes – one-of-a-kind expressions of our clients’ personalities where people come together, make memories, tell stories and thrive in each other’s company. A great home is more than just walls, ceilings and floors – it’s a sanctuary, a showpiece, a statement and a stage; the result of creative vision, craft, experience and the right people coming together to construct something truly exceptional. That, is the art of the home. LET OUR CRAFT REALISE YOUR VISION GREGGBU ILDERS .CO.NZ | T EL: 03 358 6 491

urquoise is one of the most calming and soothing colours you can use to make your space feel relaxing. Named after a mineral of the same brilliant chroma, its hue is reminiscent of the promise of Tiffany jewellery boxes or crystal-clear Caribbean waters. Turquoise is often confused with aqua, teal, and light blue. While it’s true that turquoise is similar to all of these shades, it is still a unique colour all its own obtained by mixing light blue, light green, and a tiny touch of vibrant yellow for its signature liveliness. Turquoise home décor can be perceived as exotic, but in fact, it’s practical and straightforward to combine with a wide variety of styles from bold and vibrant to more traditional looks. In what would have otherwise been a very basic bathroom, this space has been given a massive mood lift with Resene Yes Please on the tongue-and-groove panelling to complement the creamy yellow undertones of the Resene Elderflower walls. Staining the floors with Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash nods to a natural, beachy feel which inspired the incorporation of shells and sea glass coloured accessories in Resene Meditation, Resene Kandinsky, Resene Remember Me and Resene Freelance. By sticking to crisp white bath linens and bathroom fixtures with stainless steel chrome-finishes, such as the LeVivi Marbella Freestanding Bath and Devon Vanity, the result feels restful and spa-like. Why not take a bold step away from the neutral this summer and add a splash of turquoise to your favourite spaces. resene.co.nz/colorshops

le stories we tell

AB O D E’ S L A N D S C A P E A R C H I T E C T U R E E X P E R T T O N Y MILNE, OF ROUGH AND MILNE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, MUSES ON THE ROLE OF STORY TELLING IN DESIGN.

E

nglish filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott once said, “I’m a yarn teller. My job is to engage you as much as I can and as often as I can”. As landscape architects, we have an excellent opportunity to play the storyteller, to develop a narrative, to engage, to educate and to create a meaningful design response. To enrich a design, it needs a story – a collective and inclusive story. I wrote last time of hanging the calico-wrapped Christmas puddings. The puddings are something I have made for the extended family since Nana’s passing in 2006. It was the Christmas prior that I received an invitation to join her in the making of the plum duffs. Perhaps she felt it in her bones. We made the duffs with one ear to the night trots from Addington on the wireless, and one eye on the Black Caps playing Australia. The well-worn teaspoon,

16

crockery cup and pot from that evening are still in use today. Within this mix of seasonal fruitiness, there is a story. The fact that some years they are moist and others a little dry, well that's another story. A yarn also resides in the new home of my good friends Shakey and Carmel Hooper. Shakey is an arborist and pretty handy with a chainsaw, but it is the unexpected centrepiece in their lounge that hints at the delightful story sawn through the interior of their home. Attached with dowel to an internal wall, is a substantial slice through the trunk of a magnificent Sequoiadendron giganteum or redwood. Not your typical piece of art, it was born of a lumberjack’s frustration. Each time he drove past this former giant of our city, at that time standing naked on a city street, he couldn’t bear to see such nobility brought to its knees in favour of an unresponsive architectural form.

One day he stopped and politely suggested he could finish the task. Carefully felled and now painstakingly pieced together on the wall, the lumberjack is only too happy to share his story. But he doesn’t need to, and those that know Shakey, they would know that his usual modus operandi is typically to exercise a strict economy of words. Less is always more. The growth or ‘annual’ rings draw you in, you can count 130, and you realise this cross-section could tell a tale or two. The distance between the rings suggests a lot more than 130 years of life. A little like chirology, there is plenty of meaning behind and between the lines. To explain, the cambium of most trees growing in temperate climes, generally ‘awaken’ with the new growing season to form a growth ring of wood and bark. The closer the lines, the tougher those years. A time of survival rather than sustained growth. The further apart, a time of majestic growth. And one should always be wary of a possible false ring. I found myself counting back, trying to reconcile the pattern of the rings with my memory. Could there be a correlation between the years of close growth rings and the slightly drier plum duffs? Perhaps, I suggest, the blame for my poor baking skills could fall to the prevailing environmental conditions. Who would have thought a slab of a tree trunk could elicit such an engaging yarn; a yarn that is specific and responsive to the viewer. There is a skill in being able to articulate a meaningful design response. Who needs an HB pencil when you can use a chainsaw? The silence of the Sequoia slice speaks volumes if one stops to ponder, read and listen. 03 366 3268 | roughandmilne.co.nz

Proud winners Tim and Tamara Moriarty receiving their award.

s the only Canterbury-based builders to win a category award at this years’ Master Builders House of the Year, TMT Construction was thrilled to receive the national award in the Renovations under $500,000 category for their stunning project to renovate and extend a charming character home in Strowan. Registered Master Builder judges heaped praise on TMT Construction’s work on the winning house saying, “The seamless extension is so in keeping with the original house. The remarkable ceiling to the new veranda echoes the rimu floors within, and handcrafted rimu window joinery and sculpted posts showcase expert craftsmanship.”

TMT Construction owner and builder, Tim Moriarty, says he’s still coming to terms with his national award win saying, “I am so proud of the houses we renovate and build. I particularly enjoyed this home as it allowed us to handcraft so many elements and the end product was awesome. As a company, my team and I want to build great homes for our clients. It is phenomenal to have all our hard work recognised at a national level.” Tim says he loves renovations so much that he and wife Tamara recently purchased a 120-year-old villa in Merivale, which is now completely gutted and a sympathetic restoration is underway. “The building site has proved a treasure trove of historical items, from ink wells to pottery and even a 100-year-old shoe,” Tim says. “Too many beautiful homes have been bowled by the earthquakes. I am looking forward to ensuring some of our classic architecture and history remains in Christchurch.” 022 108 3326 | tmtconstruction.co.nz

hen Henry Oakley and John Morgan Taylor founded Taylor and Oakley Plumbers Iron and Tinplate Workers, Gasfitters and Bellringers in 1875, Cromwell was a shiny new town, flourishing and growing fast after the discovery of gold in 1862. Nearly 145 years later, the company they founded is still going strong as Oakleys Plumbing Supplies. In response to another building boom in the area, Oakleys has just opened a beautiful new bathroom showroom in the Central Otago town. After all these years, Oakleys is still 100 per cent privately owned and operated by a large team of passionate staff members who are committed to providing their valued customers with a broad range of high-quality products. The network of branches now encompasses Christchurch, Nelson and Dunedin plus the latest addition in Cromwell. Christchurch showroom manager and national showroom coordinator, Lisa Lemon, partnered with the award-winning team from Detail by Davinia Sutton to design the display area within the existing building, concentrating on how to best utilise the space and creatively showcase the product range. The layout includes six concept bathrooms designed to introduce clients to both classic and current looks in bathrooms. Working shower displays demonstrate overhead showers and body jets, giving customers an accurate idea of the experience they can expect from the products. An extensive range of kitchen tapware is also proudly on display.

Feedback from visitors to the new site has been overwhelmingly positive with many commenting that the space is calming and peaceful. This feedback will be music to the ears of Cromwell showroom manager, Lynda Abernethy, who has recently moved from Auckland to take on the role in this exciting growth area. Lynda brings a wealth of experience and product knowledge from many years in the industry. She is excited to be part of this new venture with a company that has such a proud history. Lisa is also delighted with the results and says, “The displays are beautiful and look high-end, but there are fittings and fixtures for all budgets on display. Oakleys continues to lead the way by putting customers at the heart of what they do and bringing the product range to Central Otago customers is just the next step in that journey. Oakleys welcomes visitors to come, relax and browse the displays for inspiration. 03 445 0008 | oakleysplumbing.co.nz

Quick-fire questions With landscape designer Henry Blakely ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS EMERGING THAT CLIENTS ARE BEGINNING TO ASK FOR?

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN HAPPENING OVERSEAS IN L ANDSCAPE DESIGN THAT YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT?

We are getting more requests for unique planting such as living walls, wild flower gardens and trees pruned in the Japanese cloud style. There is also much more interest in natural pools and mid-century style courtyards. Outdoor pavilions or rooms continue to develop into more useable spaces with integrated kitchens, TVs, fridges and furniture.

Piet Oudolf’s New Perennial Movement is beautifully demonstrated in the High Line, a project in New York City comprising a 1.5-mile long public park built on an abandoned elevated railroad in Manhattan. This New Perennial Movement mixes bold waves of herbaceous perennials and grasses into modern landscapes.

ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING NEW PRODUCTS OR MATERIALS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE OR YOU ARE BEGINNING TO USE? I like Capital Garden Products for pots and planters as well as modern versions of the traditional gatehouse and ombre visual tiles.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO CLIENTS WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IDEAS AND INSPIRATION? Each landscape is always so unique. We try to provide all of our clients with inspiration from our previous work and the creative solutions that we present them with.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR LOOKING AFTER THE GARDEN IN SUMMER? Spend time on edges and hedges. Make sure to water for more extended periods and then allow plenty of time for the garden to dry out before watering again. This method will establish a deeper root structure and give them a longer lifespan in case of drought.

beautiful lawn can be an elusive goal for homeowners. Keeping up with the constant mowing, weeding and fertilising is inconvenient at the best of times, and this is why more and more people are turning to artificial grass. Aside from the occasional brushing and rinsing, artificial grass maintains its look, colour and feel all year round, making deciding to go with a synthetic lawn the natural choice.

And with a range of eight kinds of grasses to choose from, it’s easy to achieve a look that’s fit for purpose with SmartGrass. “There are several different factors to consider when choosing the right grass for you,” says Jack. “How the grass in your lawn will be used, the environment in which you live, and the look you hope to achieve with your artificial grass.”

Jack goes on to explain that most of his customers are busy people who have a beautiful home which they always want to look good, inside and out. “Many customers have busy family lives and children who want to play sports outside all year round. We appreciate that playing football in winter on the mud is no good for a conventional lawn. And with dogs in the picture too, it very quickly becomes a mud-fest. The great thing about SmartGrass is that the lawn will always be suitable for playing sports on, and with the short blades, draining and cleaning pet messes is really easy.” But there’s also the question of durability and Jack says that’s where

artificial turf has advanced so much in the last decade. “Depending on the thickness of the blade and the density of the grass that you choose, and the amount of usage it gets, these turfs can easily last twenty years,” says Jack. “We offer a ten-year warranty on our Earth Series range, which has a permeable triple-layer backing meaning it drains faster and is much stronger than other products.” The longevity of SmartGrass lawn is also due to the care that goes into the preparation of the site. SmartGrass work hard to excavate the site first, then box it up and install crushed and compacted rock to create a solid base that doesn’t sag. With several years of experience laying hundreds of lawns and sports areas all over Christchurch, you can be sure that the team at SmartGrass know what they are doing. And customers rave about it. “I’ve got my weekends back,” smiles Lorraine Herles from Harewood. “No more muddy dog footprints around the house after they’ve come in from the garden, and no lawn mowing. It’s made our outdoor space into a sanctuary, rather than a chore.” More and more Kiwis are choosing SmartGrass to create their easy-care, peaceful outdoor zone - a space to kick back and enjoy the summer. 0800 TURF NZ | smartgrass.co.nz J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Bringing the inside, outside is ever popular. This approach isn’t that new, but the complexity of the design and what’s included has grown to include covered outdoor living spaces connected to the house with full kitchens, fires, ovens, fridges, tiles, and lighting. Natural products like stone, timber and concrete, and natural stone tiles are all growing in popularity. Artificial turf is also definitely in, with a lot of new suppliers and products to choose from. Clients are also asking for on-site water collection. And not so new, but becoming more commonplace, is the theme of sustainability (self-sufficiency, rain gardens, ecological planting design, small-scale food growing, water collection, bees) made even more popular by the rise of the plant-based diet.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN HAPPENING OVERSEAS IN L ANDSCAPE DESIGN THAT YOU LOVE AT THE MOMENT? We are seeing the ever increasing necessity to down-size, busier lives and the need for low-maintenance living and less in general. Clients are enjoying the Japanese art of wabi-sabi outdoors. This is the art of welcoming imperfection, less of the manicured hedges and standards and more ‘relaxed’ plant selection and planting style. Also we are seeing more wild and perennial meadows on a small and large scale.

We are also creating gardens for climate change; gardens that can cope with extreme weather conditions, especially drought-resistant plants. Not pandering to plants by installing automatic irrigation systems, it's more important to collect and store rainwater.

ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING NEW PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS THAT YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT? I love using metalwork and laser cutting to create screens, gates, letterboxes, signage, and water features. Also, natural-looking artificial grass, vertical green walls, indoor gardens and plants; and the luxury of robot lawnmowers!

WHERE DO YOU SEND YOUR CLIENTS WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IDEAS OR INSPIRATION? I encourage clients to collect online inspiration from Pinterest, ArchiPro, Instagram, Houzz, or magazines like: NZ House and Garden, Home, Urbis, Defign ... and Abode, of course.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR LOOKING AFTER THE GARDEN IN SUMMER? Apply mulch to all garden beds, whether it’s fine bark, pea straw or compost. Mulch limits weed growth, helps retain moisture and adds nutrients. In pre-summer, install an on-site water tank for harvesting rainwater, water your garden for longer periods, but less frequently.

Home and away Q & A with Massimiliano Capocaccia (Max) Architect at MC Architecture Studio HOW IS ARCHITECTURE CHANGING IN NEW ZEAL AND? The homeowner’s awareness of the world of architecture is evolving and so are their expectations. As architects, we now have an opportunity to explore and be inspired by architecture from across the globe. Architecture is a form of communication and self-reflection of time; the freedom of exploration allows us to strengthen our New Zealand identity.

WHAT ARE YOU SEEING OVERSEAS THAT WILL MAKE ITS WAY INTO NEW ZEAL AND OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? New technologies and, with it, new materials are already finding their way in New Zealand. A key piece of technology is the thermodynamic solar panels. This system captures energy from the outside environment, even when temperatures fall below zero, using refrigerated liquid instead of water. Another example is triple-glazed windows. Ten years ago, it was rare to see them used in New Zealand. Now we specify them in one-third of our projects. Two decades ago, it was common for architects to design every aspect of the home. This allowed no solution to be incoherent in the whole project. Recently, we have begun to do the same here. At present, we are working on several house designs which include everything from the landscaping to designing the light fittings. I believe this holistic approach has been lost in recent years, but I trust it is getting stronger.

WHAT ARE SOME NEW MATERIALS OR PRODUCTS THAT YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT AND WHY?

Architecture is the art of shaping poetry

I like everything that allows us and our clients to feel happy about our design and gives us the freedom of expression. Importantly, it should allow the building to lessen its impact on the environment. For example, the use of GRC (glassfibre reinforced concrete) tiles is endless; almost any shape, colour and texture is possible. This goes back to my previous comment on the new age of tailored design. One of my favourites though is thermally broken steel windows with triple glazing or the more affordable version with timber inside and aluminium outside. These products allow great performance without compromising the design.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE CLIENTS WHO ARE LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION AND IDEAS? The use of pictures for inspiration works well, but not to truly feel the space. Often, I see people staring at images and struggling to grasp the meaning. Our imagination can help us understand what captivates us about the colour, the texture or the proportion of a space; or a combination of those things. To further add to this discussion, when I was in class teaching architectural students, I often compared architecture to cooking; there is no wrong ingredient, nor one that is right, we all have preferences, but in the end, it is how they are combined that can make a dining experience unforgettable.

We strive to question the boundary between Art and Architecture, providing engaging and innovative living spaces with the highest sustainability standard.

Moving into the new year, at NK Windows we are continuing to see many exciting window trends gaining traction in New Zealand, expanding on existing products and improving on current technology and performance. COMFORT AND WELLBEING

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

There is an increased interest in building more comfortable and healthier homes. Homeowners are often willing to trade off floor area to improve specification, whether it be improved insulation in walls, ceilings and floors, improving the glazing performance or improving the airtightness and breathability of a home, or using better building membrane systems. Interestingly homebuilders at either end of the age spectrum are making these trade-offs – either young couples building their first homes, or older couples potentially building their last homes.

The other interesting trend is the increased demand for improved acoustic performance. As housing gets denser and often closer to noisy traffic corridors, we are seeing specific requirements to improve acoustic performance appearing in specifications.

PERFORMANCE COUNTS More people are certainly considering improving the glazing performance. Almost all clients building new homes will take the glass upgrades to improve the thermal performance, specifying both Low Emissivity coatings and argon gas, which combined can more than double the insulation value (R-value) of the window. We can now also use more advanced glass that has a higher shading co-efficient (reducing solar gain and hence overheating), allowing it to be used selectively on north and west-facing glass areas.

WHAT’S HAPPENING OVERSEAS? European hardware systems are particularly designed to provide more airtight seals. While standard entrance doors and windows have been well sealed for decades, the current focus is on improving sliding door systems, as these have always been a challenge in terms of the traditional brush seals. There are now several hardware systems that can deliver airtight sliders, by moving the sliding door sash off the seal before opening. PVC has always had the image of being available in white only, but not anymore. PVC profiles can now have laminated foils applied, on both interior and exterior surfaces, allowing for a wide range of design options. We see a lot of clients opting for dark exterior colours, but lighter interior colours to match more neutral décors. Another option is to add an exterior ‘clip-on’ aluminium skin, which can be powder-coated to match a far wider colour range and is particularly popular when trying to match to profiled metal cladding systems – the window frames almost disappear!

KE Y TRENDS FOR THE NEW YEAR

THE RETURN OF COLOUR After so many years of monotone, it’s great to see bright colours appearing in the kitchen. Bright oranges and burnt yellows are particularly popular, with cabinetry going bold and adding fantastic vibrancy to the heartbeat of the home. Granite sinks with coloured taps and accessories, for example, gold taps and coloured waste kits, are a great way to add colour. And even with natural products such as wood, we are seeing more use of rich, red woods, such as walnut.

STOR AGE/CUPBOARDS Open shelving is proving very à la mode for 2020. This configuration makes it supereasy to access all the utensils and ingredients you need, particularly if the storage space is within a pantry, away from the heart of the kitchen. Overhead cupboards and power packs are also trending. Bars and nooks and places to store keys are also becoming feature areas rather than add-ons. Europe also sees a move towards pull-out pantries, where space is a premium.

BENCHTOPS Waterfall ends for benchtops are all the rage currently. This makes for a seamless effect, with the benchtop returning down to the ground. Materials are typically moving towards marble and quartz benchtops, with darkveined 20 mm stone tops being particularly popular. Angled waterfall design and adventurous island designs are emerging trends in Italy.

HANDLES “Over the last few months we have seen five key trends emerging,” says Lauren. “It’s certainly a very exciting time to be designing a new kitchen or renovating an existing home kitchen.” The team at Misco Joinery meet regularly with suppliers, attend trade events and follow trends online both nationally and internationally. “We love making kitchens come alive,” says Lauren. “Designing, manufacturing, and installing your kitchen is what we specialise in.” 03 383 4384 | misco.co.nz

It’s either all or nothing when it comes to handles right now. Chunky handles are making a come back, with interesting feature items making a stand against the cupboards. Textures such as wood and brass are popular choices. On the other extreme, some are choosing to go for minimal or no handles at all, and instead making sure that drawers close seamlessly every time.

PA N T R I E S / L A U N D R I E S Laundries are starting to receive more attention, with a much more designed look emerging. People also want a functional preparation space within the pantry, including sinks and waste kits. J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

The 10-metre wide windows draw in the winter sun, trapping the warmth in the concrete floor and allowing the owners to walk barefoot in June and July.

T

here is a Māori legend that tells of the blossoming of the kōwhai, New Zealand’s flower of spring. A young Māori man was seeking the love of the beautiful Kotiro. But she would not accept his love until her suitor performed some great and unprecedented deed. And so, the young man shut his eyes and put forth his powers and caused the kōwhai tree to spring into flower before her eyes. The girl was amazed, and ever since that day, says the Māori legend, the kōwhai has flowered on leafless branches, a sign and a reminder of the ancient miracle. The result is indeed a great and unprecedented home situated just north of Oxford, thanks to the team at LM Built, alongside some smart architecture and the inspiration of the beautiful kōwhai tree. Both originally from northern hemisphere islands, arriving in New Zealand nine years ago, the homeowners were immediately struck by New Zealands’ tree life and birds. They loved tramping and exploring the native bush and marvelled at the diversity of the flora and fauna. “We just love the abundance of New Zealand’s native bush,” says one of the homeowners. “We knew we wanted to build our home here. We wanted to combine our love of the Philip Johnson Glass House [an example of a building with minimal structure, geometry and proportions, that showcases the effects of transparency and reflection] with our deep appreciation of the New Zealand nature, particularly our love of the kōwhai tree.”

“There are not many houses out there in New Zealand with a bright yellow roof, but it works here.”

EXTERIOR

The exterior cladding on the walls and roof is an Espan tray roofing product in Kōwhai Glow.

It’s this analogy and homage to New Zealand’s unofficial national flower that threads throughout the home. The ‘bones’ of the house, in the form of exposed polished concrete, represent the ‘roots’ of the kōwhai tree. The plywood interior walls and cedar exterior walls represent the branches, and the bright yellow roof is a nod to the distinctive flower of the kōwhai. “This is a very different home,” says Leo Meredith, director at LM Built. “It is a unique and bespoke build – something we are passionate about, and specialise in at LM Built.” It is clear talking to Leo that he is just as passionate about this build as the owners. Specialising in architecturally designed homes, he values his clients and shares their dreams and desires for their home. He loves the natural look of the polished concrete floors, the Okoume plywood walls and the outstanding white American oak joinery.

“The roof is just amazing as well,” says Leo. “There are not many houses out there in New Zealand with a bright yellow roof, but it works here.” It’s thanks to Metalcraft Roofing that the roof has turned out so brilliantly. Manufactured from New Zealand steel into the architecturally designed tray roof, the Espan product proved to be a winner. “It’s an innovative design that Metalcraft is used to working with,” says Jason Lambert of Metalcraft Roofing. “The product has no external fixings and a sliding clip system. All of our installers that work with the product are certified and approved. It’s painted at our own steel mill north of Auckland and the colour looks fantastic. We don’t hold it in stock so it’s entirely made to measure, meaning there is minimum wastage, and it’s also designed specifically for New Zealand conditions.”

BUILDING SUCCESS IS OUR FOCUS… “Communication, planning and attention to detail have all been superb.”

The 175 square metre home is nestled considerately into the hillside, beautifully finished by TK Plastering, using the Rockcote system. TK Plastering regularly works with LM Built and with over 20 years of successful business, they know how to create top results. The company specialises in new home exterior plastering, but also works on existing homes or businesses to transform the exterior, giving it a brand new, modern look and increasing the value of the property at the same time. The cladding is a natural cedar colour on three of the elevations that face the road. It’s a modern box-look from the public-facing side, but from the back, the yellow is striking, yet measured. Every room has a view, and every room is walled in plywood, representing the woody compartments within the kōwhai pod. Complementing the eco focus of the home is the all-natural, sustainable insulation, in the form of Knauf Earthwool Glasswool, installed throughout the property by Living House. Living House managing director, John, has been fitting insulation in the Canterbury area for over eight years and is proud of the product he installs. “It’s got all the latest technology in it and is built to acoustic standard. It's great to be working with recycled glass, and our customers love it,” says John.

The continuation of the kōwhai metaphor is seamless. With no interior external right-angled corners, every internal door is painted a different shade of yellow (as a nod to the eight recognised species of kōwhai). “This is so much more than an eco-home. Yes, it is exactly facing north to the winter sun; yes, it has a high level of insulation, thermally broken windows, low-E glass and a log burner that runs the underfloor heating, but it also has so many additional cool features,” smiles Leo. The curved walls required a large amount of skill and precision to build. Curves were cut out of multiple layers of plywood as a template and then studs spaced at very close centres following the curve. The spaces between the sheets are created using a negative detail with a Coloursteel flashing behind, creating a unique feature where the sheets join. All of the wall sheets line up with the sheets

We are proud to offer a wide range of Knauf wall, ceiling, underfloor, thermal and acoustic sound absorbing insulation. Knauf Earthwool Glasswool are sustainable products designed for a building’s energy efficiency with some of the highest R-value ratings in New Zealand.

on the ceilings; this takes precision set out and workmanship. The spaces have indents that are painted black, and the studs in the ply are screwed close together and left visible, creating a feature. The result is a long way from the 'chalet' look, instead, giving the home an industrial vibe that is modern yet homely. Another impressive feature is the ten-metre wide sliding doors, included to maximise the north-facing views. Made with some ingenious steelwork and an exposed post, when fully open the eye is drawn immediately to the light and the view beyond the home. “I love the ever-changing views,” says the homeowner. “Especially at night. We can see Matariki rising in May. Jupiter, in fact, all of the stars! We never get tired of it.” The eye-catching kitchen features high-gloss bright orange cabinetry and a large black granite island benchtop. The space is connected seamlessly to

the living area, providing a linking heartbeat to the home. With plenty of storage space, there is a place for every appliance, creating a sleek, clean look. It’s interesting to note that the kōwhai analogy continues into the bathrooms, with the homeowners not afraid to continue the plywood interior into the wet spaces. “We used marine grade ply in the bathrooms,” says the homeowner. “And some encaustic tiles which are thicker than normal which we had shipped down from Auckland. The hexagonal shape and the loud colours give it that psychedelic look, which certainly creates a different mood!” As Leo from LM Built says, it's so outrageously different, that it works. With the challenge of a steep site and a high level of detail required on this build, it is surprising to learn that there were very few problems encountered during the project. The team at LM Built had to relocate some power cable services which ran through the section, but it was all in a day's work for the team. Hitting rock during the digout was the only significant challenge of this build.

“We knew that we possibly could hit the rock,” says the homeowner, “and if we did this could mean a delay requiring special machinery and additional cost, but Leo managed our expectations right from the start. Luckily, we only hit a small amount of rock. That meant we had to change the timber retaining walls to concrete retaining walls, but Leo made sure we always knew what was happening.” The attention to detail extends beyond the footprint of the home, with decorated spongefinished concrete on the paths and patios surrounding the house. Riverstone Concrete has worked with LM Built on previous projects, and they were delighted to be working on this project, too. Scott from Riverstone Concrete says, “It was a challenging site for laying concrete, due to some steep slopes. But it was all very do-able for my team. We work all over Canterbury, and we employ experienced excavators and truck drivers, as well as specialists in concrete.” Often overlooked on residential projects, quantity surveyors have a valuable role to play. Focus Project Services facilitated the tender process and established the project budget for the home from the conceptual documentation. This approach assisted both LM Built and the homeowners to understand the forecast cost of the project before committing to the full architectural design, giving them the confidence to continue with the design process. “We provided a budget and a management process to stick to that budget, so there are no surprises for the clients,” says Darryn Crawford of Focus Project Services. All in all, it was a very positive experience building with Leo and the team from LM Built, according to the delighted homeowners. 42

HOMES “Leo and his team were very easy to work with,” states the homeowner. “Leo is someone who listens and gets back to us all of the time. He was always patient in explaining things to us, and he came out to the site whenever we asked him to.” It’s this focus on the customer that motivates Leo, too. “The most rewarding thing for me is seeing the smile on the client’s face,” says Leo. “And we have an exceptional team who all have the same goal. My staff are my most valuable asset.” Employing nine full-time builders and a full-time administrator means LM Built are big enough to handle more complex and labour-intensive jobs, but still small enough to be able to offer a very personal service to the clients. States Leo, “The clients love that I am only a phone call away at any time so there is no miscommunication.” The foreman for this project, Brad, has been working with LM Built for five years. The company prides itself on working to a high level of detail and workmanship usually completing around three to four homes a year, depending on the size and complexity involved. Demonstrating the depth of the solid working relationship, Leo presented the homeowners with a kōwhai tree as a house-warming gift. The kōwhai tree legend is as satisfying as any lover of fairy tales, or poetic soul could wish for. The homeowners have respectfully named the home Te Aonga Kōwhai meaning ‘where the kōwhai blooms’. Māori holds the tree in high esteem, valuing its hardwood and many medicinal properties. Indeed this is a home that LM Built and the homeowners can also hold in equally high regard.

t’s not easy to envisage how your new home will look simply by looking at the plans, and that's why the chance to wander through a show home offers a unique viewpoint that can both inspire new ideas or help to crystalise existing plans. Signature Homes’ latest show home, recently completed in the North Canterbury community of Ravenswood, offers a close up look at what's possible, allowing clients to see for themselves the quality they can expect from a Signature Home. Ravenswood, situated at the north end of the Woodend township, offers a taste of country living with all its benefits such as beaches and rivers, the Waipara wine valley, Pegasus and Hanmer Springs. And all within a short distance of the central city,

plus the nearby amenities and shopping at Woodend, Amberley and Rangiora. Residents can savour the peace of rural life just a short commute away from the bright lights of Christchurch. Signature Homes offers a range of options to clients including design and build and house and land packages plus pre-designed homes. The show home at Ravenswood is mostly based on the Moturiki home from the Aspiring Collection, with minor alterations to add a bedroom. Adam Baylis, franchise owner for Signature Homes Christchurch North, says, “We put our clients first and recognise they all need different things from their homes. For that reason we cater for alterations and personalisation to the pre-designed homes, or there's the option of design and build.”

BENCHTOPS

The island benchtop is Silestone Gris while the rear bench is Prime laminate in Black Velvet with a matt finish, from Millbrook Kitchens.

The unique design of the Moturiki home features a clear delineation between the living areas and the bedrooms formed by the walkway, which begins with the front path and extends to the rear of the house. A continuation of the exterior cladding through the hallway blurs the lines between outside and in and draws in light through the floor-to-ceiling glazing. The spacious living area features a cathedral ceiling and sun-drenched lounge, which opens out to the sheltered rear deck via sliding doors. A dining zone and chic designer kitchen complete the highly functional layout of the communal areas. Rangiorabased kitchen specialists Millbrook Kitchens designed, manufactured and installed the kitchen joinery. Millbrook Kitchens designer, Ange Pratt, says, “Signature Homes were after a sleek modern young vibe with the kitchen that was in keeping with the rest of the home. Being an open plan concept, the kitchen needed to have simple lines so it wouldn’t take over the space.” Millbrook Kitchens has for many years enjoyed a stellar reputation both locally and in the wider Canterbury area. All Millbrook’s kitchens are custombuilt, fitted with skill and absolute care and designed with the client's wants and needs foremost in the

process. Millbrook Director, Andrew Millbrook, says, “With the Signature show home situated in Ravenswood it has become part of our beloved area. As a locally-owned and operated business, heavily involved in the community, it was a pleasure to work on this project with Signature Homes.”

ohn Ross Architectural Builders have made it their business to seek out the winners amongst the remaining hill sites, and this Redcliffs beauty sits proudly on one of the best. Enjoying an expansive view of the estuary and across the city lights to the Southern Alps, it also ticks the ‘flat section’ box – the holy grail of hillside living.

Proud owners Sarah and Paul lived in Fendalton for many years having renovated and built homes in the area. Their decision to move up the hill was inspired by the appeal of this Redcliffs section and the unique design of the house, which was already under construction when they made the leap and purchased. John of John Ross Architectural Builders created the concept plans for the angular, wedge-shaped home, which was then designed by Invercargillbased M.A.S Architecture to maximise and create a usable, sheltered outdoor area. John says, “The house is designed to get the best out of the section. When the house sold, we were selling the vision of the finished home.” Paul and Sarah loved the design and bought the house at the foundation stages. Coming in early in the project meant there was flexibility for the couple to make changes to suit their lifestyle and John says, “The elements that Sarah and Paul added have made the house what it is today.”

HOMES INTERIOR DÉCOR

Sarah and Paul collaborated with an interior designer to choose the soft furnishings; the finishing touches to an elegant and cohesive interior.

The Redcliffs home is an excellent example of thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship. John Ross and team painstakingly extracted the the multi-toned Redcliffs stone to be used in the striking feature walls on the exterior and inside the entranceway of the house. Spread over two floors, the upper-level layout comprises a dramatic double-height entranceway, with an exquisite oak screen, leading up to the open plan kitchen, dining and living area. The split-level configuration allows for a separate media room which Sarah says is a brilliant space to curl up in and watch a movie. The integrated audiovisual set up for this media space and throughout the home was designed and installed by Le Comte Electrical, whose work features in all of John Ross’s projects. Le Comte Electrical offer a full design and install service for lighting, security, media and household wiring and the team completed a full wiring install for Paul

The finished result is a home that has a real sense of space, privacy and rugged-ness. With Vicki’s love of interiors and exteriors and Chris’s expertise in building, they found a section that suited their requirements on a desirable corner spot that would showcase what they could create. “We love Corten steel and the semi-industrial look of concrete panels,” says Vicki. “We wanted to incorporate this with the cedar and stone.”

Chris of Chris Shearer Builders has been building for over 43 years. You could say it runs in the family. His grandfather started the family building business in 1917, his two sons are both builders, and he has three brothers, all working in the construction industry. From working for his father, who Chris says was a great builder, to setting up Chris Shearer Builders in 1989, he has built over 500 residential homes throughout Christchurch. His passion now lies not only with standard home building but also architecturally designed homes, such as this one. “I like to be able to use my expertise in building to do something a little bit different,” says Chris. “With architecturally designed homes, it often means we can explore some interesting roof lines and create a truly out-of-the-ordinary home.” It’s these architectural homes that Chris aims to continue to build, and hence provide his team of four builders with more challenges and more growth. Chris Shearer Builders has an established business, with his foreman building with him for over 20 years. It’s this commitment to his team that shines through with Chris. He likes to see it as a family business. And now that his wife, Vicki, is pursuing her career as a freelance interior designer, after ten years working in interior design, Chris Shearer Builders now offers a complete project management and design and build service. 62

HOMES KITCHEN

Clean cupboard lines and sleek joinery make this kitchen a stylish and integral part of the home.

Faced with an unusually shaped 650 square metre section, it was a trouble-free choice for Chris to select Kelvin Boyd of Kelvin Boyd Architectural Services to design this unique home. “Chris showed me the site, and I drew up some basic concepts before he put an offer in on it,” says Kelvin. Having worked together on previous projects, Chris knew that he could rely on Kelvin to design something that was visually appealing to the street and created privacy at the back opening up into as large an area as possible. “Chris is brilliant,” smiles Kelvin. “He wants to have my ideas and input, and he and Vicki have a natural eye for design and architecture.” The distinct advantage Kelvin brings is having worked on ‘both sides of the fence’, so to speak. He trained as a builder at the start of his career and then went back to university to study architecture. For the last eight years, he has worked as an architectural designer, completing projects all over Canterbury. “It’s a useful skillset being both a builder and an architectural designer,” he states. “Builders can relate to me very easily, and I know exactly what they are talking about. Equally, I can help clients see all parts of the build process and all of the practical implications of the design.” Chris and Vicki were particularly impressed with how Kelvin was able to design a home that lay perpendicular at both sides to the wedge-shaped section. Between two mono-pitch wings, there is an interconnecting low-pitch roof with large internal gutters.

The cladding for the 251 square metre timberframed home is made up of cedar, Corten steel, plaster and stone. Enhancing the presence of the house, the feature stonework on the exterior taps into the surrounding environment. The Corten steel gives a weathered look and has been designed to eliminate the need for painting and form a stable rust-like appearance. The rustic look is very popular and well loved in the world of architecture. Ian McLeish of Avon Plastering installed the exterior plasterwork. Ian frequently works with Chris and his team. Avon Plastering, licensed exterior plasterers for all plaster system brands, have a clear understanding of the demands of Christchurch’s buildings and the diverse weather conditions they face. The finished product was an excellent solution for this home. Vicki’s flair for all things interior shines throughout the four-bedroom home. From the moment you open the front door, you are drawn into oasis of tranquility. The striking and beautiful wallpaper by designer Catherine Martin, titled Majorelle, threads seamlessly from the front door through to the main space, drawing you into the high-ceilinged living space and dining and kitchen areas. The polished concrete floor adds a rustic element, and the oversized rugs provide the homeliness feel that is so important to Vicki. J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

“... I like to be able to use my expertise in building to do something a little bit different.” “We chose concrete flooring over planking due to the unusual shape of the floor plan,” says Vicki. “The angles wouldn’t have worked with planking, and the concrete is beautiful. It is so easy to keep clean and has wonderful thermal insulation value.” It’s this attention to detail that shines out in the property. But this requirement for a particular look did not come without its challenges. Chris remembers the anguish involved with the macrocarpa screens that partly partition the living and kitchen area. “We’d seen a programme on HGTV where the wood had been burnt to provide a rugged look,” says Chris. “We figured we could replicate that, but it took a couple of goes to get it just right.” And the finished product is entirely in keeping with the rest of the home. Chris also prides himself on the one-off custom made sliding barn doors, that Vicki designed. They add that sense of outdoors and natural beauty within the walls of the house. Cleverly positioned and connecting the dining-living space with a formal lounge is a beautiful double-sided gas fire. Supplied and installed by GasGuys, the company employs craftsmen specialist gas fitters and service agents of the Escea product range. The installers know their products inside and out and have

worked with gas fires for over nine years. Roger Shadforth at GasGuys is delighted with the chosen product. “The Escea DS 1400 double-sided fire is a great choice for this home,” says Roger. “Escea is the biggest selling brand of gas fires in New Zealand and is known for its quality and reliability.” GasGuys also supplied and installed the Rheem gas water heater in the home. The outdoor space is undoubtedly a firm favourite with Vicki. She worked with Debbie Rimmer Landscape Design to create a garden that complements the style of the home: contemporary, yet rustic and low-maintenance. The lush planting and the use of rocks and corten steel have created not just a relaxing garden, but also a complete New Zealand scene. With creative use of lighting to light up the West Coast ferns and feature ornamental trees, the garden is lovely by night and day. “This was a fantastic project to work on,” says Debbie Rimmer. “The garden flows beautifully from the home and provides a stylish and lowmaintenance space for the couple.” And the feeling is mutual, with Chris and Vicki feeling thrilled with the landscaping. “It’s always a pleasure working with Debbie, she’s such a lovely, talented lady,” says Vicki.

n arrival at this stylishly-executed hillside home, it is the beautifully framed views from Heathcote Valley to the Southern Alps, superbly balanced with a strong sense of connection to the land, that impress. The house that previously occupied the site caught owner John's discerning eye when it came up for sale in 2010. He was instantly enamoured with the Jonty Rout designed 70s-style house and the sensational views, so bought it; moving in just nine weeks before the February earthquake struck. Following that event, and the long wait to settle the insurance, Stephen Fitzgerald Architecture was engaged to develop a concept design that resembled living in the landscape. In a serendipitous twist, then draughting technician, Stephen, had worked with David Sheppard and Jonty Rout at the time of the original design, learning the ropes from the best at a young age. “I admired David and Jonty’s design abilities and gained a massive amount of knowledge collaborating with them on projects until I completed my Bachelor of Architecture degree at Auckland in 1986,” says Stephen. 70

ENJOYING THE DECK

The much-loved house is home to John, Lyn, Carlo and Ike.

The renewed configuration bears little resemblance to what came before. Still, both owner and designer were careful to honour the spirit of the 1970s design in the reimagining of the home. The new 140 square metre floorplan now extends out from the hillside with the upper-level housing entry gallery, living and kitchen plus a discrete service area. While the lower floor comprises three bedrooms, including the master with ensuite, plus the main family bathroom. The floor area has remained the same and, viewed amongst its neighbours, appears petite, taking the form of a box tucked into the slope.

J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

With the build project underway, John met nurse Lyn, and the pair got talking. Lyn confesses to being partial to only wearing black, and she laughs, “When John told me ‘I’m building a black house!’ that caught my attention.” Thus acquainted, the project soon became a shared journey towards the elegant home they now enjoy together. The tall recessed slot on the facade reveals the entry via a pivot door. A spine wall of art enhances the tradition of the entry gallery drawing you through to the cedar-clad fireplace and opens out to the expansive landscape vistas beyond. Inside the dining room, the sleek linear kitchen is discreet and allows for an unobtrusive flow to the deck. Lyn says the space works beautifully for the two of them. The simplicity and proportions of the rooms give the home a laidback air that a friend once described as a “flash bach”.

HOMES

The open plan living area gives the impression of two zones delineated by the vertical timber feature wall which houses the gas fireplace. Playing with asymmetry at every opportunity, Stephen Fitzgerald has offset the fire, and each of the large windows facing the view has been treated differently, with one set out from the wall and the other flush with the cladding. A plywood window seat is a well-used perch, with fierce competition between John and Lyn and their two pugs, Carlo and Ike for the best seat in the house. The steepness of the site and the orientation of the land to the sun were crucial factors informing Stephen’s design and also provided an opportunity to create a large deck bridging over to the ground from the upper house level to provide greater connection to the land. This alleviated the need to retain the house into the hill, and also provides future-proofing against potential earthquakes. The black exterior cladding is vertical shiplap cedar combined with metal cladding. The exterior look was a design element John requested, and he says, “I wanted a shape and form that blended with the landscape and hid itself to an extent.” The designed solutions with integration between hard and soft landscaping were a success.

As the design team at Stephen Fitzgerald Architecture are all affiliated with the New Zealand Green Building Council, are all accredited HomeStar Practitioners, and active members of the SuperHome movement, energy-efficient principles were applied throughout the design. Stephen says, “This home embodies energy-efficient design principles that exceed the building code to create a comfortable environment. The connection to the land and streetscape is what makes this home special and gives it an identity. The architecture allows its occupants to appreciate the magical location fully while providing a modern and clean aesthetic, enhancing their living environments both inside and out.” Stephen was humbled to be asked to design a home that combined respect for Jonty’s legacy and design principles with his client’s brief, plus the chance to improve the performance of the building to superior health and comfort levels. John was heavily involved throughout the process and enjoyed the challenge saying, “If a space is well designed, it doesn’t need to be cavernous,” although he admits his love of designer objects, particularly chairs, means the garage remains jam-packed. recently completed an architectural degree, this home could be just the beginning for him. Of working alongside John, Stephen says, “John has an amazingly astute eye for finesse and detail. He was a valued member of the design collaboration process.” Settled and loving their decision to live on the hill, John and Lyn are thrilled with the results, finding living there relaxing and peaceful. The home’s connection to the street also offers a sense of community. “We love living here. We live in it as if it was a bach.” Grown-up children come and go, and Lyn says, “The kids love coming home.” With his study completed and his interest in design as strong as ever, this is unlikely to be John’s last project. Still, both homeowner and designer are justifiably proud of their to reinvent a classic residence and create a thoroughly modern home that brings a lot of joy.

artistic expression This reinvigorated late modernist home at the foot of Table Mountain has become an ever-evolving personal exhibition space for its gallerist owners and their young family. WO R DS GRAHAM WOOD

andace and William Marshall-Smith decided to renovate their Cape Town home while Candace was still energised after the renovation of her fine art gallery, SMITH, in the historic city centre. Not long after moving from Johannesburg to Cape Town with their young family, Candace and William found a house in a wonderful spot in Oranjezicht in Cape Town’s City Bowl. The house itself was a reasonably unremarkable 1970s double-storey. “It looked like a school building,” laughs Candace, “but it had a wonderful sense of space, which is rare in Cape Town. It had incredible views of the city and Lion’s Head to one side, and it’s right at the foot of Table Mountain.” A terraced rocky garden with a beautiful stone staircase seems to bring the mountain right down to the edge of the house, giving it a strong presence and sense of place. Yet, somehow, it’s potential had been overlooked, perhaps because of its inelegant architecture. But the position and 360-degree views were enough for Candace and William.

“I just remember being astonished at the views,” says Candace. Also, the couple could see potential in some of the house’s late mid-century features. Nevertheless, she and William didn’t renovate immediately. “We lived in it for three years,” she says. “We had time to consider what we wanted to do.” Besides, Candace was rather taken up with the launch of her gallery in a beautiful, idiosyncratic heritage building in the historic city centre. After the success of that project, however, she was ready for another challenge and decided to renovate. “I was excited to start the project,” she says, adding that they’d decided to have a third child, so she finally knew how many bedrooms to plan for. She and William worked with architects Stuart Thompson and Matt Pretorius of STARC to convert the existing house into the mid-century dream Candace had been nurturing in her imagination. They managed a remarkable alteration, retaining many of the late J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

modernist features Candace and William had grown fond of, such as the fireplace, the stairway with its glazed façade on the southern side of the house, which let in views of the mountain and lovely soft natural light. “I had quite a specific vision for the interiors,” says Candace, who was keen to pick up on the mid-century cues in the architecture. “I’m a huge fan of furniture that is functional,” she says. “And I love furniture that is fitted.” Built-in window seats and daybeds have been worked into the bedrooms and study. For the rest, Candace worked with interior designer and stylist Christine Joubert, who helped bring together a combination of new and vintage furniture pieces to complement their existing collected furnishings and, of course, the art. Candace values the sense of time that a collector’s sensibility brings to a home, rather than everything looking like “it had all been acquired at once”. The sense of an easy-going, evolving interior was exactly what she was after. Restored modernist pieces picked up at auctions rub shoulders with contemporary modernist-inspired works by the likes of James Mudge, setting up a lovely sense of dialogue between past and present. Perhaps inevitably, the house has become something of a gallery in its own right. Candace laments the lack of wall space in many extensively glazed contemporary homes, something she was careful to retain during her renovation, balancing the spectacular views with space for art and everyday life. Apart from the southern façade, Candace points out, “The views are carefully framed and quite subtle. A lot of houses only maximise the views, which is not always the best solution.” The result is a much more thoughtful relationship with the home’s beautiful setting.

78

J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

While she does have a few heirloom artworks and has picked up some twentieth-century modernist pieces by the likes of Walter Battiss, the majority of Candace and William’s collection is contemporary local art. “I really like how contemporary art is pushing the boundaries with medium,” she says. “I love conceptual art.” So, while the architecture and furnishings might hearken back to the twentieth-century, the art is upto-the-minute. “We have a lot of art from artists I work with at the gallery,” Candace confirms. It’s a lovely expression of her belief in the artists she represents, but also brings a wonderful sense of life to the house. With its beautiful light and ample wall space – little nooks as well as large expanses like the stairwell, it really does flatter art as much as life!

Using every spare minute they can find, the couple share a passion for DIY and home dĂŠcor sharing the details of each project, accompanied by beautifully styled photographs, with their many followers on the blog, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Embarking on the renovation of their St Albans home, the couple realised that many others would be doing the same thing. Shayden says, "We figured that our journey isn't unique, it's what most people go through at some stage in their life, so let's share it." As the followers grew, the blog expanded to upcycling furniture and showcasing how they have used favourite products in their home, partnering with brands to share recommendations with followers. With four years of hard work on the house behind them, there is now just the bathroom, laundry and landscaping to complete before moving on to the next exciting project. INGREDIENTS

Recipe extracted from Vegful By Nadia Lim Publisher: Nude Food Inc Ltd

175g plain flour 1⁄3 cup caster sugar 75g fine polenta or semolina 1 free-range egg yolk finely grated zest of 1 lemon 2–3 teaspoons finely chopped thyme leaves 175g cold butter, cubed

J A N U A R Y/ F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 0

500ml cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or seeds of 1 vanilla bean pod 12–18 thyme and lemon shortbread 1 quantity flash-roasted rhubarb and strawberries

+ Combine flour, caster sugar, polenta/semolina, egg yolk, lemon zest and thyme in a large bowl. Add butter and use your fingertips to gently rub it in until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Alternatively, place ingredients in a food processor and pulse until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

+ On a clean, dry, lightly floured surface, roll a ball of dough out to 0.5–0.75cm thickness. Use a cookie cutter (approximately 6cm diameter) to cut into rounds. Whilst quite delicate to work with, shortbread dough is very forgiving. So, if the mixture starts crumbling or breaking up, don’t fret as you can just press and patch it back together with your fingers — you can even add leftover bits of dough to help patch up cracked bits! + Transfer to the prepared trays with the help of a metal fish slice or edge of a knife. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until shortbread is light golden around the edges. Swap the trays around halfway through cook time, so that the batches cook evenly. + Remove from oven and allow to cool on the trays for a few minutes. Gently transfer shortbread to a wire rack to cool completely and let them crisp up. Store in an airtight container or cake tin — they will keep for a few weeks if they don’t get gobbled up before!
