s I write this column, the cloudy sky is gently darkening our freshly landscaped garden and the rain is setting in. Our new pittosporum hedge plants are enjoying the downpour that’s giving me a break from the watering can. The rain reminds me of just how much I enjoy staying in on cold winter nights, something we’ve all been doing more lately. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been living with a pandemic for two years now. This year, Covid-19 has become an expected disruption to our plans, as illness and isolation have changed the way we live. Many of us have either had Covid-19 or know people who have, and some lives have been changed forever by loss. As we continue to spend more time at home, we look at ways to make our lives more comfortable and transform those once-neglected spaces into places we love. We hope you find some inspiration for your next project in these pages. Homes featured in this issue include a small, but striking property with big hillside views, a dazzling riverside residence in Avonside that engages with the landscape, a modern masterpiece in Halswell and a cleverly positioned Merivale home with views to the Southern Alps. Experiencing landscape, the e-bike way

his summer past, I had one of the better days of my life. Of course, it didn’t supplant the arrival of my two children. The fact that we live out of wedlock fortunately takes that out of the equation. Company notwithstanding, it was the mode of transport that made it. I’m an infrequent cyclist and more often do so while on holiday. Cycling through the parks, promenades, lanes, streets, river trails and around the waterfront of cities abroad stirs fond memories. Several years ago, we biked the Otago Central Rail Trail, hauling our children along on tow bikes. A fantastic experience of frosty morns, followed by sun-drenched days, open landscapes with big skies, swooping magpies and warm cheese scones in Hyde. Not to mention the odd decision I made to grab a pint in the Commercial Hotel in Ranfurly. Nothing odd about that, cycling does raise a thirst. It was the fact I wore my white tennis shorts. I digress. Back to our recent summer’s day. Rebecca and I hired e-bikes and cycled, pedal assisted, from downtown Nelson, via the railway reserve, out along the edge of the incoming tide of the largest semienclosed estuary in the South Island. The Waimea Inlet. Leaving the ebb and flow of the tide, a cheese scone (of which I am partial) and coffee were enjoyed on the balcony of a country café. Back on cycles, we found the estuary edge again. Skirting beds of oioi (the New Zealand native reed), a winding gravel path and boardwalk we followed, past a fertiliser factory, too. 18

Down a country lane, over a river bridge and along a stopbank track, we were at Moturoa/Rabbit Island. Here we lay on towels, read our books, and in the temperate water of Te Tai-o-Aorere/Tasman Bay, we did bathe. Refreshed, and with lunch beckoning, we threaded our way through the back roads of the fertile Waimea Plains, the landscape a fabric of production and summer haze. Bucolic almost. I did point out the new Appleby Fire Station, apparently it was obvious, and I needn’t have. Lunch was among the vines at Brightwater, a platter of local produce accompanied by wine and cider, borne from the verdant local land too. Satiated and in saddle, we hugged the true left bank of the Waimea River before crossing it on a purposebuilt swing bridge. Through vineyards, along the fringe of industrial Richmond, we reunited with the edge of the Inlet. The tide was now out; salt marsh vegetation and cockle beds lay exposed. Enjoying the downhill finish back into the town centre, a careful negotiation of traffic crossing the dedicated cycle lanes, we had our bikes back on time. Imbibing with a mango and lime cider, we reflected on our day’s experience. A thoroughly pleasant 80 kilometres adventure, a vignette of landscape types unlocked, enjoyed and experienced from our hired e-bikes. Despite my mother suggesting we were ‘wusses’, who, along with my father, is still pedalling unassisted, we have since bought an e-bike each. 03 366 3268 | rmmla.co.nz

n this serene lounge, the walls feature Resene Frozen, a cool winter grey blue, introspective, modest and delicate. While it’s a great paint colour in its own right, even more softness can be gained by layering it with a second hue applied as a feathery paint effect. That’s where Resene Nepal, a muted grey blue pastel, comes in – which is a great option over purer blues that may seem too harsh. The mottled, almost tile-like effect was created by first painting the walls in two coats of Resene Frozen. Once dried, a tape measure was used to mark out with pencil an 80 mm x 50 mm grid. Next, high quality 24 mm-wide painter’s masking tape was carefully applied, ensuring all of the lines were square. A testpot of Resene Nepal was mixed into a 1 litre tin of Resene Paint FX Medium and applied with a paintbrush in a criss-cross motion, gently wiping over the strokes with a clean, dry rag. Once the paint effect was dry to the touch, the carefully removed masking tape revealed the ‘grout’ between the ‘tiles’. The floors were then painted in Resene Walk-on and tinted to Resene Blanc, a subtle and restrained Parisian white with a warm undertone, to bring extra cosiness to the space.

By choosing a neutral off-white sofa with simple lines and instead taking the colour to the walls, you’ll be spoilt for choice in how you can accessorise your space – which means it’ll be simple to swap out accents as the seasons change. Plus, it’ll be much quicker and more affordable to repaint your walls than it will be to replace your sofa. Try using each of your accent hues in at least three places within the room so that your colour scheme feels cohesive. Look to cushions, throws, side tables, plant pots, vases, candleholders, artwork, rugs and painted furniture to carry your colour palette across the space. In cooler months, try bringing in a combination of ruddy terracotta, inky blue and whisky gold such as Resene Tuscany, Resene Madison and Resene Noosa offset by clean-lined soft black furniture in Resene Half Bokara Grey. Other colours that look right at home with muted grey blue pastels like Resene Nepal and Resene Frozen are pale honey yellows, classic creams and muted and greyed green blues such as Resene Oasis, Resene Pearl Lusta or Resene Casal. resene.co.nz/colorshops

HOW TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE IN OUR HOMES

WALLPAPER AND PAINT Various wallpaper companies are providing sustainable manufacturing processes focusing on forest replanting, water recycling, natural dyes and recyclable packaging. There are several wonderful New Zealand companies manufacturing natural paints and oils, and reducing exposure to harmful chemicals both during and after painting.

here are all kinds of things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. The list is likely familiar to many of you by now – biking to work, turning off household lights when you’re not using them, buying local produce and so on. A common area that is often overlooked lives right under our noses: our homes. CURTAINS AND BLINDS Our curtains are one of the features of our house that we may not actively think about much, but they serve so many important purposes (decoration, warming the house, keeping out light, giving us privacy). We would be hard-pressed to live without them! Reducing our electricity bill not only does wonders for our wallets, but also the environment, and one of the easiest ways to achieve this is through good quality and well-manufactured window furnishings. Tight-fitting honeycomb blinds are a superior insulation solution, helping with both cooling in the summer and heating

in the winter. Try to fit your curtains close to the window and, ideally, make them go from ceiling to floor. This is because warm air rises up under short curtains and goes out the window, while cold air from outside then drops and moves in under those short curtains into your room. Brrr!

MATERIALS Opt for organic and low-impact natural fibres. Natural fibres are a truly sustainable option when it comes to fabrics. Linen, hemp, wool and cotton come from readily renewable resources. These take only months to grow (or a year in the case of wool). Organic fibres are grown in the same way as organic food, through practices such as companion planting and growing healthy soil. Several fabric suppliers are utilising PET plastic waste from consumers and industry to create durable and UV-resistant yarns, which are then woven into fabrics for curtains, upholstery and blinds. BUY ONCE AND BUY WELL When it comes to buying furniture, make sure you choose well-made pieces that will stand the test of time. There is a significant amount of cheaply made furniture, which can often not be repaired, so it will eventually end up in landfill. Choose pieces that can be fixed easily and repurposed over time, saving the planet and your hard-earned cash in the long run! Interesting furniture pieces made from sustainable materials such as rattan are excellent choices, as well as floor rugs utilising leather from the fashion industry. he “less is more” approach is certainly gaining traction in the building world today. With the prospect of a more cost-effective build, a closer connection to the natural environment and a beauty in the visual simplicity, there’s a lot to like about smaller homes. Add to that a father who’s an architect, and it’s hard for this particular homeowner not to have something of an interest in houses. But more than just the aesthetics of a home, this homeowner wanted to embrace functionality, simplicity, integrity and presence when designing his own small home. “My dad used to drag me around building sites, and so I’ve always known I wanted to build a house at some point in my life,” says Matt, homeowner of this newly built architectural treasure in Christchurch. “I’m interested in something that looks functional and has fantastic engineering solutions within it. But more than this, I wanted the building to have a presence which meant it needed to go against some of the typical design trends,” says Matt.

smaller homes

This home does not come with the label of ‘trendy’ or ‘stylised’, and that’s how Matt intends it. In contrast, it holds an elegance and longevity in its presence, and is crafted with an outstanding level of finishing. Situated on some gnarly, steep terrain on the outskirts of Christchurch, this abode seems to emerge from the surrounding rough landscape and dominate in a confident and stable manner. The brief from the owner to architect Joff Kennedy was to design an 80 square metre, two-bedroom home styled on a military bunker, with clean lines and a high level of functionality. “After I bought the land, I taught myself SketchUp. Through that process, I started playing with some of the angles, inspired by military fortifications,” states Matt. “And it was an obvious choice for me to employ Joff from my father’s old architectural firm to turn these ideas into a reality.” Blair Watson, project manager from Gregg Architectural Builders, was also involved from the very start of this project, as the home went through Council sign-offs and budgets were set.

“As soon as I was shown the plans I was instantly attracted to the home,” says Blair. “It was clear an incredible amount of thought had gone into the floor plan, and that shows in the finished house, which feels spacious and roomy, despite its small footprint.” Affectionately known as the SkyFort, the home achieves this spacious feel largely thanks to a huge twostorey high window, letting in light and at the same time capturing 180-degree views of the sea and the city. But the project wasn’t without its complexities. The steep and slippery terrain was probably the biggest challenge of this build, with almost all items being carried by hand onto the site. “We had to start this job in the summer, as we knew the ground would be treacherous in the wintertime,” says Blair. “There was a lot of manual labour involved in simply carting and lifting timber frames into place on a steep site.” Bad weather also played its part, with Canterbury’s biggest rain event of 2021 leading to the slumping of the dig out for the retaining wall at the back of the property. “That was probably the worst of it,” says Blair. “After letting things dry out a little, it was a case of reinstating the bank and carrying on. I’m grateful we had two fantastic builders working on this job. Will Roberts and TJ Maea did a fantastic job from start to finish. And all with a positive, can-do attitude.” 38

HOMES The homeowner agrees, saying, “Will and TJ went above and beyond before the storm hit, and Blair too, to secure the site and put in some temporary measures to stop any damage.” It’s this seamless working together by Gregg Architectural Builders that impressed Matt all the way through this project. “Throughout the entire process you question everything and second-guess yourself all the time,” says Matt. “Despite all the sleepless nights, I never secondguessed my decision to build with Gregg Architectural Builders. They were outstanding. They had the patience of a saint answering all my questions and didn’t sting me when I changed my mind on things midway through the process.” The finished home speaks for itself with its natural feel inside. Downstairs the kitchen and lounge feature plywood walls, ceilings and floors, with a large deck to the west providing a beautiful connection to the outside world. The double-height void in the lounge adds volume to the open plan living. The plywood staircase leads you to the bedrooms, with the master bedroom enjoying the double-height window and the expansive views.

“For me, it’s the finishing of the home that brings me joy,” says Matt. “For example, the different sheets of ply on the wall are all lined up, so the grain running between them matches up. Gregg Architectural Builders exceeded my expectations crafting this house. It shows they really care.” Building a home is a delicate balancing act. It can be scary and all-consuming for the homeowner. The builder needs to navigate emotional and financial requirements with the homeowner, on top of the logistics and planning of the actual construction. Add into the mix the Council consent process and the realities of working with multiple subcontractors from multiple parts of the country, and we can start to appreciate what skill Gregg Architectural Builders have demonstrated in this build. “Gregg Architectural Builders have woven all of these threads into a fantastic home,” concludes Matt. “And they’ve done it in a respectful and dignified way. It’s been awesome for me.” Setting the standards for quality craftsmanship are integral to Gregg Architectural Builders’ work. And that is largely thanks to the team effort of homeowner, builder and architect. A home is more than just a place to live, we all know that. It’s a reflection of who we are and what we value. So when we build a new home, we want it to be perfect. But for this homeowner, enjoying the process along the way was equally as important. She wanted the process to be enjoyable and enriching, rather than stressful and depleting. So for that reason, she chose Jarrod Southon, the team at Simplexity Builders and Noel Strez of Noel Strez Architects to take on the task of building this home. “With a small site of 520 square metres, combined with the town planning regulations and recession plane requirements, the building form was largely predetermined for us,” says Noel. “But we worked hard on the design to gain maximum orientation to the sun and gardens while at the same time meeting the brief for an easeful, low maintenance property.” The homeowner’s desire for a two-storey property was so that she could see and enjoy the view of the Southern Alps from her bedroom. She also wanted a calm outdoor space. “I had a desire for an internal courtyard as a place to relax in," says the homeowner. “I’ve travelled to Japan a few times, and I love that sense of peace that’s created by the use of courtyard spaces with tasteful green planting.” Once the design of the home was signed off, the architect set about recommending builders for the project. Top of the list for the homeowner was finding a builder who was easy to work with and receptive to her ideas. Jarrod from Simplexity Builders was an obvious choice. The architect and builder have worked together on over eight home build projects prior to this one, and they are both on the same page with their design philosophies. “I saw my role as being the glue of this project,” says Jarrod. “Everyone does their part, and my team and I are always looking forward to keep the project on time and on budget.”

Not without the odd difficulty, this build was challenging primarily due to the enclosed nature of the section. With eight adjoining properties, getting the support of neighbours was a significant undertaking for Jarrod and his team. “Tristan Walter was my foreman on this project and did an absolutely outstanding job,” says Jarrod. “He managed the excavation during very wet times, and did a fabulous job of keeping the neighbours up to date.” Noel agrees, saying, “Tristan’s ability to analyse projects three weeks in advance is second to none.” Access to the site was the most significant challenge on this project. With the land labelled TC3, this meant the foundations needed to be of a superior standard. Letters were prepared for neighbours, advising them of site activities. The narrow driveway meant the transporting and storage of materials had to be carefully planned and executed. From the moment you walk inside, you are struck and delighted by the attention to detail and the highquality workmanship that went into building this home. There is certainly a sense of being drawn in to discover the delights that lie within.

The lounge with its cathedral ceiling is another example of superior craftsmanship and the meticulous nature of the team’s work, made with dozens of narrow planks of cedarwood. “It’s one of my favourite parts of the home, as it creates a peaceful and quiet environment,” says the homeowner. The large, sliding windows in the lounge create a beautiful open flow between inside and outside, and the engineered oak flooring gives the home a warm and natural feel. The lighting blends beautifully and provides focal points to catch the eye as you float through this tranquil home. “Because I could select the subcontractors on this job, I knew there would be no surprises,” says Jarrod. “I’ve been in the building business for over 25 years, so I know who I can rely on to provide a quality job. It also means I can be fairly accurate with my cost estimates, so no one gets any nasty surprises from a cost perspective.” Jarrod points out, in particular, the clever use of entry-level textured tiles in the bathrooms and ensuites, to complement the superior gunmetal fixtures and fittings, which give the home a sophisticated, modern look.

HOMES “It’s these small details that make a big difference. For instance, the strip drains in the showers and the alcove in the master ensuite. These are relatively straightforward things to do, but they can really lift the home to the next level of luxury,” says Jarrod. The close-knit team of builder, architect and homeowner worked seamlessly together throughout the build and met frequently on-site to talk through any changes or upcoming work. “At the finish of the build process, I missed not having them around,” says the homeowner. "It was a pleasure to work with Tristan.” In Jarrod’s words, “You have to enjoy the process and have a laugh. That’s what it’s all about.” It’s clear that this combined team took a lot of pride in their work, and it shows in the results. These walls will certainly stand the test of time and provide the homeowner with years of joy and laughter.

here’s something quite special about homes designed and built with a sense of creativity and artistry in mind. Often reflecting the personalities of the people who live in them or representing moments in a place’s history (with all its struggles and joys), homes that ooze uniqueness are a delight to explore. Such is the case with this home. With a desire to be close to family and the central city, the homeowners asked South Architects to design something that engaged with the landscape, namely the adjacent Avon River and the city of Christchurch. The couple also wanted a sustainable home with room to enjoy the garden and admire the long vistas across the river. “After listening to our clients, we wanted to create a sense that this timber material rises up from the ground and encapsulates the first floor,” says Craig from South Architects. “This way, the timber form entwines the home with the landscape, and in a sense, drapes from one end of the home to the other.” The timber lattice screen is a central theme of this home. It rises up over the entry and merges beautifully with the first-floor volume. The north side of the home is

HOMES largely glazed, giving views towards the Avon River. It’s delightfully created, almost like a nest on the edges of the bustling, rebuilding city. “The traditional gable form is pushed and pulled to create differing levels of shading and shelter, where the form raises from one side (sitting area on the ground floor) to the other, encasing the first-floor balcony,” says Craig. Despite the small size and narrowness of the site, this 258 square metre home is surprisingly bright and open both inside and outside. It’s almost as if the narrowness is part of its beauty, and this is captured through the use of the angled timber fins. Of course, the danger with a narrow site is the potential overbearing feeling from neighbouring properties. Craig explains, saying, “The narrow shape of the site meant recession plane angles had a bearing on the overall concept. This proximity to the boundary encouraged the creation of timber fin privacy devices to avoid overlooking towards the neighbour.” This series of gaps and openings throughout the house further contribute to the openness of the home, while creating privacy and the opportunity to create different views to the riverside. The use of cedar cladding on the ground floor and cedar-stained cladding on the first floor instantly create a homely feel and complement the relative greenery of this central Christchurch suburb. With sustainability in mind, the thickness of the framed walls and roof structure has been increased to enable a greater level of insulation to both floor, wall and roof. The window frame is thermally broken and has been pushed back against the timber frame to align the thermal break with the double glazing and wall insulation. The air quality is managed with a mechanical ventilation system, located within the ceiling space and ducted to various areas of the home. Solar panels and batteries allow the occupants to manage the electrical demand as cost-effectively as possible. The inside of this home is just as impressive as the outside. The use of Gaboon ply for large amounts of the interior walls, ceiling and outside soffits, as well as the bespoke cabinetry lend a natural feel throughout the home. There is not a right-angle in existence in this home! The irregular angles provide a quirkiness and homeliness at the same time. A building of this complexity required an outstanding builder.

HOMES The homeowners have worked with John Garlick Builders on all their building projects, and this home build was no exception. Specialising in high-end architectural builds, the team at John Garlick Builders has the experience to understand the unique challenges of any area or house built in Canterbury. “With a project like this one, we needed to do a large amount of prior planning,” says Kade Atkinson, managing director of John Garlick Builders. “It was about always having the ability to forward think and foresee issues and next steps quite far down the track.” For example, the tight, narrow site meant there was only 400 millimetres of spare space to manoeuvre around on one side of the building and 1200 millimetres on the other. “We had to think about what materials we would need for landscaping and future parts of the build from the very beginning,” says Kade. “Everything was brought to the site by hand because of the narrow restrictions.”

HOMES Add in the traffic management required when preparing the site (due to the property being close to a major intersection), and it becomes clear just how expert the team at John Garlick Builders is. “My staff have a meticulous eye for detail and have worked with me for many years,” says Kade. “We all work on the same page, and as a result, we’re a welloiled machine.” The kitchen benchtop is just one of the standout features of this home. With a geometrically angled benchtop that resembles a diamond shape in parts, it’s a focal point for this open-plan living space. Kade is quick to praise his staff and is proud of the result they have achieved, saying, “I’m not the one swinging the hammer, it’s the guys on-site who have made this happen. The team and I gained huge satisfaction and pleasure out of this project. I feel very proud that, together, we built this.” Nothing quite like this home has been seen in Christchurch before. This one-of-a-kind home is a true work of art. It is a reflection of the creativity and imagination of its architect. The sheer intricacy of the structure and the meticulous way it has been built is a reflection of the professionalism and craftsmanship of the builder. hile out on a regular road bike ride, the homeowner came across this quiet, secluded subdivision and instantly felt its charm. Two years later, the homeowners are newly moved in and loving their new home. “It just felt right,” says the homeowner, on describing the initial connection he had to the site. “The open space, established trees, and larger section size, coupled with our kids leaving school, made it feel like it was the right time to build again." The ball was rolling just prior to the impacts of Covid-19 and before the rising construction prices and difficulties of supply of building materials. In hindsight, it was the perfect time. The couple’s brief was for a four-bedroom home with ensuites in each bedroom, great indoor-outdoor flow and a pool. “My parents put a pool in at their property, and it really helped to bring the family together,” says the homeowner. “We wanted to create that same sense of invitation.”

There was also a desire for a timeless, elegant home. Thinking they were not going to be building again, they wanted this home to be the best it could be. It was an obvious choice to enlist Lee Johnstone as the couple’s architectural designer for this build. Lee has designed over 600 beautiful homes and buildings throughout New Zealand. He describes his design vision as heavily traditional but with the best of modern. “I research quite heavily and incorporate traditional styles into modern designs,” he says. Recommended by a friend of the homeowners, Lee developed initial ideas on the drawing board by hand and then worked closely with the couple to mature the design.

HOMES “Most clients don’t really know what they want until we discuss all aspects in detail,” says Lee. “It’s a case of sitting down and talking through the requirements bit by bit, piece by piece, to form an initial image in my mind. Then I go away and put it all on paper and refine as I sketch out some initial ideas based on the clients’ needs and wants.” What Lee has designed is a modern masterpiece, with a plaster finish and an abundance of glass to provide all-day sun and outstanding views. Careful attention to detail is apparent everywhere, from the internal staircase with glass balustrade to the hidden gutter details for the level entry tiled patios. With budget in mind, the cladding was kept simple, with a StoArmour Façade Panel System being the product of choice. Lee states, “As a designer, weathering is a top priority. For the sake of minimal additional cost, this is one of the most robust and long-lasting systems around.” All went smoothly with the design. “Lee is an excellent communicator,” says the homeowner. “Typically, he would have replied within minutes of sending an email.” This acknowledgement goes both ways, with Lee saying, “What makes this project special is that the clients love it so much. It was a great build process, and with a great building team, nothing was too much trouble.”

It was a very uncertain time, but we are so glad that we took the plunge and chose to work with Wayne and his team.” Driven to achieve the best possible outcome for their clients, the team at Wayne Murrary Builders pride themselves on high-quality craftsmanship and close on-site involvement and supervision. Jason Barlow, the project foreman, and Wayne worked together to construct a first-class home and deal with any complexities as they arose. “Like a lot of architectural builds, there were some exciting challenges along the way,” says Wayne. “In the case of this build, one such challenge was the finding a way to install recessed roller blind pockets into a confined and restricted structure at both ceiling levels.” In addition, the cantilevered glass stair balustrade also presented complexities. “It was about creating a finish that looked seamless but allowed the balustrade to rise out of the side of the stair, while at the same time be fully accessible, if required,” explains Wayne. “And with the pool, we implemented a design for the perimeter pool tiles that allowed a tile overhang with square edges and crisp lines around the perimeter of the round-edged fibreglass shell pool.” M AY/J U N E 2 0 2 2

It’s this attention to detail, impressive rapport and teamwork across all persons associated with this build, and the relationships developed on-site between the builder and the homeowners that is second to none on this project. “All of the builders and subcontractors were amazing,” says the homeowner. “Jason Barlow set up a Messenger group so we could send through photos of anything we weren’t sure of or ask questions about details of the build. There were never any issues, just challenges to easily overcome.” “We were fortunate enough to work with clients who trusted us implicitly, allowing us to push a few boundaries to create a home we are all super proud of,” says Wayne. Wayne Murray Builders have joined a very small group of elite Canterbury builders to have won the prestigious overall winner or ‘Supreme Award Winner in the Master Builders House of the Year Awards’, in this case, not once, but twice. “I’m enormously proud of my team and what we’ve managed to achieve. To also be acknowledged at that level by your industry peers makes it all the more satisfying,” says Wayne.

omes on this Cape Town cul-de-sac are not easy to come by. Situated high up on the slopes of Signal Hill and overlooking the world-renowned beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, this is probably the city’s most exclusive location, and properties aren’t regularly on the market here. The owners of this remarkable house, for example, purchased their property back in the late 1990s, following a lengthy search for just the right spot for a Cape Town home. Situated at the end of the street, a position with jaw-dropping vistas in almost every direction, the

plot had a small existing house on it. However, it “didn’t take full advantage of the views that made the property so special,” say the owners. “We were attracted to the location and views that the site offered.” And so, after a lengthy process of planning and approvals, the old structure was demolished to make way for something new. And the resulting house most definitely does showcase those superlative views – while also giving them a bit of healthy competition in terms of the visual appeal of its architecture and interiors. I N T E R N AT I O N A L H O M E R AW B E AUT Y Contrasting textures of concrete and marble lend a raw beauty to this contemporary kitchen.

On arrival at street level, one’s eye is immediately caught by the home’s intriguing façade. A boldly ‘patchworked’ raised stone pathway leads to the front door, which is handle-free and almost invisibly punctures a wall clad in smooth, warm-toned cedar wood. Above this rises a semi-transparent, intricately patterned brise-soleil, created using thousands of slimline terracotta tiles. Once inside the door, the sense that one has arrived is continued in the entrance hall, which combines dramatic, triple-height proportions with a sculptural staircase. And before there is even time to take in the stairway and intriguing, poetic artwork applied directly to the wall alongside it, a sensational feather-clad polar bear sculpture by Italian artist Paola Pivi creates a diversion for the eyes. With additional lightbox artworks catching the eye under the stairs and a multi-strand pendant light fitting, this is a playful, impactful and gallery-like space.

Take the long staircase up into the house, and the sense of boldness and an almost theatrical atmosphere continues. At the top is an expansive, open-plan living area – but the element that immediately draws the eye here is the spectacular 180-degree view of ocean and sky that unfolds all along one side of it. Once again, the space is filled with dramatic appeal, but as much of this is derived from the breathtaking view as it is from the considered mix of contemporary furniture and art that fills it. What the owners have achieved – both here and on the higher floors of the house – are interiors that both complement and enhance the clean lines and view-framing simplicity of the architecture. In the living area, for example, sleek Antonio Citterio sofas provide comfortable seating but are also an ideal design selection because they don’t visually interrupt the vista to the horizon. Also notable for their beauty here are the interior finishes and fixtures, which range from sandstone and marble to wood panelling. Throughout, the palette of natural materials chosen to complete the interiors adds a feeling of ease and luxury to the spaces. At the same time, the furnishings include a plethora of prominent names in both contemporary and classic modernist design.

Among the many highlights are modern classic pieces by Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier; sculptural contemporary chairs by Tom Dixon; elegant outdoor furniture by Patricia Urquiola; and patterned rugs from Moooi. Adding unique touches are items such as the custom-made drinks cabinet by Ceramic Matters and a “pixelated” server by Cristian Zuzunaga for Barcelona Design. And the final layer takes the form of artworks that are bound to be perennial conversation starters, including an ornate bust by South African contemporary art star Athi-Patra Ruga. There is much to divert the eye and attention from a design point of view throughout this multilevel home, but the flow of the spaces is also organised to seemingly intuitively pull you through them – and inevitably, towards the panoramic views of the ocean at its front. Of course, the pristine and picturesque mountainside above and alongside the house is suitably celebrated, too. The kitchen-diner space, for example, is perfectly situated for enjoying an alfresco breakfast, where one is positioned seemingly in the middle of nature rather than being mere minutes from the urban bustle of nearby Camps Bay and Sea Point. The owners spend their southern hemisphere summers at the house, and throughout that time, invite multiple sets of visitors to stay with them. Their spacious, open-plan home lends itself perfectly to entertaining, and sunset cocktails, as well as alfresco meals, are regularly taken in the outdoor patio area adjacent to the top-floor “skybar” – as the owners say with characteristic understatement, from this vantage point, “the sunsets over the ocean are quite spectacular”. This is a house filled with dramatic design appeal, but the loveliest element of all remains the all-natural panorama that encompasses both the pristine mountainside and the bold expanse of ocean. As the owners say, while they appreciate and enjoy spending time in every room of their home, it remains a “privilege to wake in the mornings to the wonderful views”. 74

P R E P TI M E : 25 minutes S E T TI M E : 2 hours FR E E Z E R L I FE : 4 months I N G R E D I E NTS : BASE: ¾ cup dried coconut ¾ cup dates, soaked in boiling water to soften, then drained ½ cup almonds ½ cup buckwheat 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp vanilla bean paste or extract Pinch of salt FI L L I N G : ½ cup cashew butter 1 ripe banana 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted 2 tbsp honey ½ tsp vanilla bean paste or extract Pinch of sea salt Flesh of 3 passionfruit TO S E RV E : Coconut yoghurt Flesh of 1 passionfruit Drizzle of honey M E TH O D : For the base, place the dried coconut, almonds and buckwheat in a blender and blend until you have a rough flour. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until you have a cookie dough consistency. Line a tart tin with plastic wrap and press the base into the tin. Press up the sides to create a crust. Place the base in the freezer while you make the filling. For the filling, add all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Take the base out of the freezer and pour the filling onto the base. Spoon the passionfruit flesh over the filling and gently make a ripple effect with a skewer. Place back in the freezer to set for 3 - 4 hours. Once the slice is set, top it with coconut yoghurt, passionfruit and drizzle with honey. Cut it into slices and enjoy.
