ustainability is fast becoming knitted into our everyday lives. We’ve got charters at workplaces, products and services touting the latest in eco-friendly Earth kindness, and climate change is every second headline on news websites. Whether you consider yourself a ‘greenie’ or not – you have to face facts. The collective world is marching towards radical change to combat the rapid destruction of Earth. It’s frustrating that the onus is on the little man when large corporations are damaging the ecosystem daily at an alarming rate. But we do hold the power in our hands. Conscious consumerism is up to you. Together, we can shift mountains. Recently, I spoke with the founder of Untouched World, Peri Drysdale. This inspirational woman has led the charge on sustainability and ecological garment manufacturing right here in Christchurch, from the mid-nineties to today. She has reached a global scale with her efforts. Imagine the effort involved in trying to make these changes. Educating others around you when the mere thought of ecological practices or sustainable methods of production weren’t even considered? Peri is a trailblazer, through and through, and I’m immensely proud to have her in our magazine. It’s time for us, as a city, and as a nation, to embrace more than just the buzzwords. You can make a change. You can be kinder to our home, Earth. You can make choices that assist in the eventual recalibration of our ecosystem. Now is the time, more than ever. Let’s do this!

SQUAWKZILLA AND THE GIANTS Did you know, more than 60 million years ago, giant penguins swam in the warm oceans where Aotearoa New Zealand is today? Fast forward a quick 40 million years or so, and Central Otago was submerged beneath a giant lake. Here strange creatures like crocodiles, turtles, burrowing bats, and the world’s largest parrot, nicknamed Squawkzilla by scientists, lived in subtropical forest. BASEMENT JAXX

THE EAST POINTERS

SCARED SCRIPTLESS

The hitmakers behind Romeo and Where’s Your Head At, Brixton dance duo Basement Jaxx has been bringing the party since the late ’90s. The band have released seven studio albums and have enjoyed massive success. Their live shows continue to be eccentric, carnival-esque extravaganzas, featuring live musicians, dancers, crazy visuals, and a revolving door of guest vocals.

The East Pointers have always been musically complex and technically brilliant. Redefining the ever-evolving modern folk genre, the band has within their repertoire Billboard-worthy pop hooks, deep acoustic groove, trance-like trad breakdowns, and three-part harmonies. The group has made sure their new album Yours To Break will light a path for a new generation of music lovers who don’t care for labels.

Every Friday and Saturday, the fastest and funniest comedians come together to perform Scared Scriptless; the comedy show that’ll have you doubled over in laughter. Combining the wit of stand-up, the exhilaration of theatre and your most brilliant – or brilliantly stupid – comedy prompts, Scared Scriptless is the longest-running late-night comedy show in the country for good reason.

egendary, award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp headlines Venus Rising by the Royal New Zealand Ballet – a programme of four celestial ballets which is at the heart of the 2020 Season, showcasing inspirational and internationally renowned female choreographers. For more than 50 years, Tharp has trailblazed ground-breaking choreography in ballet, film, and Broadway. She has made over 160 works for stage and screen, which have earned her an extraordinary number of accolades and awards. The New Zealand premiere of Waterbaby Bagatelles (1994) will be the first time that the Royal New Zealand Ballet has had the pleasure of bringing the unique vision of this living legend to New Zealand audiences. Fjord Review has described Aurum by Australian Ballet Choreographer in Residence and former Royal New Zealand

Ballet dancer Alice Topp as ‘incandescent as liquid gold’. It has been performed to acclaim in Australia and New York and won a prestigious Helpmann Award in 2018. Its New Zealand premiere as part of Venus Rising is an exciting addition to the RNZB’s international repertoire. New commissions from Andrea Schermoly and new Royal New Zealand Ballet Choreographer in Residence Sarah FosterSproull complete the line-up for Venus Rising. Both choreographers premiered their first works for the RNZB to critical and audience acclaim as part of the hugely popular Strength and Grace programme in 2018, with Andrea Schemoly’s Stand to Reason then resonating with audiences all over New Zealand as part of the Bold Moves tour in 2019. By faith and art

S

tudio 125 Gallery’s much-anticipated autumn pop-up includes a new series of paintings In the Stillness by Heather Brown. The artworks are heartfelt and explorative; they come from a spiritual centre. It’s apparent her paintings come from a deeply spiritual and passionate place, and her faith influences her painting. Heather reflected on a well-known Bible verse, Psalm (46:10) “Be still and know that I am God”. “I adhere to the dictum that something made with pure intentions will always project its own aura of authenticity. I have found in quiet times that wisdom rises to the surface. When considering this new series, I tried to incline my ear to quiet places, listen and trust my instinct. “The moment of finding a voice for the creative impulse is a profound, mysterious, and prayerful space and time. It’s in that

quiet time, you get clarity of mind and hear the still small voice of truth.” The artworks are abstract, bold, and monochromatic with as many as eight variances of one colour shade layered over each other. The reflective nature of the finish is both literal and metaphorical. They appear as a combination of a sculpture and a painting in the way they are mounted – floating like a fine blade on the wall. A varying intensity of application is used across the boards to create the desired effect, embracing the random permutations of the paint in a highly creative yet structured way. In the Stillness is open until 24 April, from Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm. The gallery, located at 125 Aikmans Road, provides a unique opportunity for collectors and supporters of SCAPE Public Art to invest in sculptures and artworks. Everyone is welcome to visit.

COUTURE

Fashionably conscious

A Kia Dirkson, Fashion & Beauty Editor

s we all take more time to consider our life choices, we must look at the worlds of beauty and fashion as a sustainable source of personal style. I recently attended Ballantyne’s Sustainability Panel hosted by Aotearoa’s top fashion brands. Maggie Marilyn (pictured above) is one of those who is paving the way by remarkably producing her entire collection in New Zealand. We have choices today that no one has ever had in the world of beauty and fashion as brands branch out into the realm of awareness like never before. Ask yourself: What is actually in the products I use on my body? Do I need to ship that from overseas? I have been collaborating with global brands over the past few weeks and realise, through our eco-centric conversations that the change is real in the realm of both fashion and beauty. Yu Mei launched a purse initiative

for shoppers to return and recycle their old bags. Recycle Boutique at The Tannery gives clothes a second chance rocking labels like Levi’s Jeans, Ralph Lauren, and Guess for savvy shoppers to select affordable fashions. This month’s line-up of COUTURE pieces will inspire you to invest in sustainable style in a multitude of ways. Shopping locally, selecting organic fabrics, opting for recycled goods, and researching the brands you’re buying are all ways to shop smart in the modern age. Hand-selected for you is the PAMPER section with a gallery of the same eco-conscious products and treatments that you can use to give back to yourself with less impact on the environment. Ethique’s entire range raises the bar with its no packaging policy. I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zones and embrace the wave of change and charge into the fashionable future.

Purely Perriam

O

ur central city keeps getting better, with another addition filling the gaps. PERRIAM is set to open at The Crossing and will bring high-end merino products to Ōtautahi just in time for the cooler months. PERRIAM found its roots on owner and creative director Christina Perriam’s family farm, Bendigo Station in Central Otago – a place of rich history, pioneering spirit, enduring natural beauty, and the home of the famous Shrek the Sheep. The company, based in Wanaka, began in 2014 and Christina is excited to bring New Zealandmade merino products to the Garden City. “I’ve always had aspirations to open a boutique in Christchurch and to see it all come to fruition over the past few months has been wonderful,” she says. “We are very proud of this store – it is looking absolutely beautiful and embodies the PERRIAM ethos.” The introduction of a Christchurch store harmonises with a fresh new design direction for the brand, which Christina describes as “considered and timeless with a strong emphasis on merino and natural fibres”. The latest edition in Christchurch will be the third New Zealand store, following the success

of the flagship Wanaka store and the original boutique in Tarras. The aesthetic of the store can be described as luxurious, warm, and unassuming – distinctly PERRIAM – with a colour palette from the iconic Central Otago landscape where Christina grew up. The store stocks WOMAN (the core range which is centred around premium knitwear), BABY + CHILD, HOUSE + KNITTING, ACCESSORIES and the brand-new sumptuous LOUNGE range. Christina is thrilled to be set up in the city and is confident that the locals will love the brand. “Although we had been looking to establish a store in Christchurch for some time, the location had to be perfect, so we were thrilled when an opportunity at The Crossing came about,” she says. “Our high-country merino story really resonates with the Christchurch customer. We have a loyal following in Canterbury with many people having already visited us in Wanaka or purchased online, and we anticipate that a physical store will be well received.” PERRIAM makes pieces of quality, not fast fashion – take a look for yourself next time you’re at The Crossing.

his feat of mechanical engineering is stunning, remarkable, and fast. Anyone would stop and pay attention to the Ferrari, whether it is just stationary or on the move. However, with the wrong fuel and lack of maintenance, this majestic machine will soon sound horrid on the road and then break down frequently. With persistent neglect over time, it will soon look sorry, and we all know it will not last much longer on the road despite repairs. Amidst the chaos of today’s world, it is normal to force our body to perform like the Ferrari. We must be clever, look good, meet deadlines, and be available to those we love. However, we have become unskilled in nourishing, nurturing, and resting it. This neglect manifests as feeling chronically fatigued, falling sick on the first day of our holiday, a persistent infection despite antibiotics, or annoying bodily functions often invalidated by clinical findings and panels of laboratory tests. Over time, earlier onset of familial health conditions usually occurs like gout, obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, dementia, inflammatory conditions, and even

24

cancer. Poor health is a concern evident in the annual New Zealand Health Surveys. Our health budget has increased at least three times for the treatment of chronic health conditions in the past decade. In 2021, it is forecasted that 1.77 billion New Zealand dollars will be needed to treat diabetes alone. We are also developing chronic health conditions at a younger age and living longer in poor health. Like the neglected Ferrari, it is a painful thing to watch, especially as a doctor. At Real Healthy Me, the team can help you optimise your body and health. They do this by identifying your health needs and goals, and then hold you accountable to your individualised health plan with health coaches. You will learn how to nourish and heal your body with what you are already doing every day – eating, moving, sleeping, thinking, and connecting. They can also teach you to “boost” your health for specific life goals. The health solution is simple as the body already knows how to take care of you. The hardest part is for you to take care of it – but the team at Real Healthy Me are here to help.

Restore, revive, renew In 2020, there’s a focus on preservation like never before. In essence, individuals, communities and the entire world are finally facing up to the urgency behind the need to restore balance to Earth. Ballantynes’ recent sustainability forum IMPACT: Redressing Fashion and Beauty in Sustainability heard from designers Maggie Marilyn, Juliette Hogan, Emma Wallace from Kowtow, and Ethique’s Brianne West about how sustainability integrates into their business practice; we meet the couple behind The Silvan, formerly an art gallery and café in Selwyn Street, who have reframed their business to salvage, repurpose, and renew, creating homewares that bring out the beauty in the forgotten, lost, and broken; and we talk to Peri Drysdale, who is twenty-odd years ahead of the eco apparel game – she kickstarted a sustainably-focussed revolution in the nineties and has created something quite unique in her Untouched World flagship store. Three stories to treasure – people and businesses who genuinely care for our city and want to do the best possible for Earth.

conscious conversation has been a long time coming in the world of fashion and loyal locals, Ballantynes, are helping to pave the way. At the centre of this conversation is sustainability. It is essential to understand that the decisions we make when shopping have a more significant impact than the price we pay at the till. Ballantynes hosted a powerful panel of entrepreneurs and female founders: Juliette Hogan, Brianne West of Ethique, Emma Wallace of Kowtow, and Maggie Marilyn. These four are some of New Zealand’s top designers and businesswomen who are at the forefront of changing the way we look at brands. This inspiring quartet encourages progress, not perfection and actively seek engaging opportunities like this to discuss, encourage, and teach about sustainable practices within the fashion and beauty world. The discussion was guided confidently by Ballantynes’ own buying manager Megan McKee and Vanessa MacRae, the marketing manager. The vegan fare was on offer to a host of guests that included some of Christchurch’s most stylish folk who have a keen interest in understanding how we stay true to a sustainability stance in today’s modern world of fast fashion. Kowtow managing director Emma Wallace says having a long-established relationship with Fairtrade and creating a deep devotion to advocating for better trading conditions is what set the brand apart in its early days. Founded in 2006 by Gosia Piatek, Kowtow is a label committed to creating positive change. The brand makes a conscious decision to only use renewable and sustainable fibres as well as employing ethical manufacturing – as guided by their mantra of preserving the planet and protecting the people that inhabit it.

Brianne West is the brains behind Ethique, and as one of the finalists for NZ Young Entrepreneur of the year in 2019, she serves as the voice for global beauty awareness. She devotes her brand to the science behind the products we use and packs her products with only the necessary ingredients and a strict no packaging policy. Having established Ethique over eight years ago, she encourages the knowledge-hungry new generation to seek out the realities of the products we use. Damage Control Shampoo Bar, her first product, is still a best-seller today. Maggie Marilyn represents the younger generation as they strive to be more conscious about their shopping choices. She hails from Kerikeri, and her small-town roots have given her the fortitude to maintain manufacturing right here in Aotearoa; thanks to which she keeps a direct relationship with everyone in her supply chain. Launching her brand straight out of design school, the famed Net-a-Porter picked up her line and established it as the first New Zealand company sold through the online retailer. Juliette Hogan finished her design studies at Parsons in New York City and moved on to establish her eponymous brand in 2004. It sits today as one of New Zealand’s most successful boutique designers – creating timeless, everyday luxury pieces. The hugely talented Louise Cuckow oversees Hogan’s unique designs which use the likes of recycled wool coating and end-of-line fabrics which would typically fall to the cutting room floor. As an active member of MindfulNZ, which promotes long-term sustainable growth through responsible business practises, Juliette believes, “In this day and age, sustainability is just common sense. We can’t afford to behave any other way.”

WASTE NOT WORDS & PHOTOS Kim Newth

treaks of old cream paint still cling to a beautiful wooden picture frame, fresh from the Silvan Made Christchurch workshop. On the back of the frame are the words: ‘NZ kauri, 1930s prep school, Christchurch earthquake timber 2011.’ Along with frames, Silvan Made is crafting items like trays, boxes, and trestle tables from lovingly salvaged earthquake timbers. For GT and Debs Thompson, the husband and wife team behind this enterprise, it is all about honouring and remembering the city’s lost places while also demonstrating the power of repurposing. Before the earthquakes, The Silvan was their thriving art gallery and café in the heart of Addington. It was a creative base of operations for GT, who was then juggling a busy career as a photographer, artist, picture frame-maker, and film location scout. Debs managed the business day to day and loved the role, bringing to it many years’ experience in hospitality. Everything they’d worked for came to a stop in the February 2011 earthquake. The café building was broken, the film and photography work dried up. Things were looking pretty bleak until the couple began fighting back with a whole new change of focus. In the 1980s, in an earlier phase of life, they’d run a salvage business together. After the 2011 earthquake, they were dismayed to see so many quake-damaged buildings being demolished with no attempt to save materials. It led to the reboot of The Silvan as a dedicated salvage team. Their yard soon filled with saved timber, but even so, it was a tiny amount compared to what was being sent to landfill.

“We hate waste,” says Debs. “What happened was a crime against Christchurch. All that irreplaceable old timber was our heritage, and it got dumped.” Fortunately, they found others who shared their perspective. In 2013, the couple were buoyed to be part of the Whole House Reuse project, facilitated by Rekindle. This involved the full deconstruction of a house in New Brighton, with all materials catalogued and listed for creative reuse, culminating in an exhibition at Canterbury Museum in mid-2015. As well as red-zoned houses, other salvage projects by The Silvan included the 1930s prep school, Hillmorton Hospital’s chapel and Akaroa Hospital. A film school graduate and artist working with recycled materials (GT Art), GT is Silvan Made’s chief maker. He honed his woodcraft skills in the Addington workshop of master carpenter Ray Hastie. “I was using Ray’s workshop to make picture frames and could see that Ray was the most amazing joiner; I loved his skill,” GT says. “When the film industry slowed down, Ray employed me in his workshop to help out, and I learned a lot from that.” Artist Yasoda Dulal, who once exhibited at The Silvan, created the distinctive figurative sculpture that is their icon. Along with GT and Debs, their daughters Terryn and Jyr are also very much involved in this inspiring family business. Silvan Made goes to market on Saturdays at the New Brighton Seaside Market and Sundays at The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora and is also available through Sollos (The Welder), The Kowhai Collective (Guthrey Centre), HAPA and Felt.co.nz.

eri Drysdale could be the most innovative Cantabrian you might meet. Thirty years in the making, Peri’s vision has led the way in sustainable practices in textiles and brought to life brands Snowy Peak as well as Untouched World. The latter boasts a unique identity here in our city – a combination of the Burnside flagship store, the manufacturing plant, the Untouched World Kitchen, and a garden café oasis. “My vision was to promote a cleaner, greener way of living, so this space brings that whole philosophy together to promote a healthy lifestyle. For us, it means doing our best to make our clothing sustainable, by trying to use natural fabrics and fibres that aren’t going to leech chemicals onto your skin or wash microfibres down the drain. It means keeping our manufacturing local, so we can be sure we’re delivering quality and those making our garments have great working conditions and fair pay.” The company came into fruition at a time in Peri’s life where she was travelling frequently, and she became alarmed at the state of the planet. “Sustainability was just not on the radar back then. People were focused on profits and didn’t really give the planet – or working conditions – a thought. I decided to create a brand that was more than beautiful clothes.” Through the use of luxurious natural fibres and fabrics and adopting sustainable business practices that don’t harm people or the planet, Untouched World has extended their reach beyond the business, engaging the community in a way that raises awareness around issues they see in the world that need addressing. “Rather than throwing money at the problem with short term solutions, we

32

decided if we were to do it, we’d do it properly. We committed to channelling a percentage of all sales to our Untouched World Foundation, working with stakeholders and community partners to roll out ‘Leadership for a Sustainable Future’ programmes around the country for students. Our aim was to ignite the passion in youth to do things better and lead their generation toward a more sustainable future.” Peri mentions that while all of this is hugely rewarding, there is a lot of tireless work done behind the scenes. The entire team behind Untouched World authentically care about leaving the world in a better state than they found it. “People don’t tend to get excited when you start talking education, but we need to start at a grassroots level if we’re going to encourage behaviour change.” An auspicious acknowledgement from the United Nations has further cemented Untouched World as a global exemplar in sustainable development. In Peri’s words, this was ‘humbling’. “It confirmed for us that our efforts were having an impact. We’re getting more and more interest from different organisations wanting to get on board with what we’re doing, which is really exciting.” Constantly pushing the boundaries with new sustainable fabric combinations, their latest Autumn/Winter range includes shirts made from eucalyptus trees, sweatshirts made from organic cotton and recycled fibres, and a new children’s range made from fabric and fibres left over from their men’s and women’s collections. “I really want Untouched World to inspire positive change in the world and to challenge the status quo.”

CITY SCENE

O

nce filled with over 70 homes, Christchurch’s Avon Loop has been a quieter but no less loved part of the central city post-earthquakes. Cyclists, pedestrians, and dog walkers, in particular, have continued to meander along the battered asphalt, enjoying the riverside views. Now what’s underfoot has been dramatically improved with Ōtākaro Limited creating a 700-metre shared pathway along Oxford Terrace, between Willow Street and Kilmore Street (or Pomeroy’s Pub if you’re more familiar with that). The upgrade of the Avon Loop is essentially an extension of the already famous paved City Promenade that runs through the CBD, creating a riverside walkway from the Hospital to Fitzgerald Avenue for locals and visitors to enjoy. In time, the Loop will also connect the completed City Promenade and any developments in the Residential Red Zone further east. A focus of Ōtākaro’s work has been making the river a more prominent feature within the city. The terraced steps, eel habitats, and punt stops already incorporated into the City Promenade have given people more opportunities to get down to the water’s edge.

The addition of the central city’s first dedicated canoe and kayak launching ramp in the Avon Loop, easy entry and exit and a stabilised riverbed footing, offers another way to enjoy the iconic Avon River. The ramp has received rave reviews from keen paddlers who have welcomed the replacement of the “rickety old thing” on offer prior to the earthquakes. For a more sedate outing, the area also now includes a stunning boardwalk made of Purple Heart hardwood. New seating has been scattered throughout the Loop, so you don’t feel the need to rush the journey. Around 17,000 plants are about to be added to the area to further remove you from the pace of the central city, but not all the greenery will be new. Come Spring you will notice the return of some familiar daffodils, planted by a river warden/guerrilla gardener, Ross Edgar, more than a decade ago. Before work started, the bulbs were thoughtfully removed by members of the Avon Loop Planning Association and have now been replanted around the entrances to the boardwalk. The Avon Loop is an excellent example of what a regenerated city should look like, the places we’ve long known and enjoyed injected with some additional wow factor.

HOMES

FOR PASSION OR PROFIT? WITH Harcourts Gold Real Estate

Lynette McFadden discusses the ‘DIY dream’ of renovating property, whether your reasons are financial, personal, or just to get on the property ladder to own your own home.

L Lynette McFadden Business Owner & Mentor Harcourts gold @lynette_mcfadden

ong before the days of large subdivisions and multiple numbers of brand-new properties – before every new home came complete with landscaping, smart wiring, and gleaming chattels – it was often customary to buy something old, or even decrepit, to renovate and restore to its former glory. It was almost seen as a Kiwi rite of passage, and for many, me included, it was the only way of getting on the property ladder. The factors guiding prospective purchasing decisions were usually money, location, time, and ability. For some, a renovation was planned as a lifetime pursuit, restoring old dwellings into proud character residences, for others the project was a stepping-stone. And regardless of whether it’s a thing of the past or your current occupation, attention to detail while renovating will always determine both the success of the venture and future prospects when it comes time to sell (should that be relevant).

37

Let’s consider the money first. It’s not just about the purchase of the property, but how much is required to renovate it. Old homes – and I know from living in four properties that were between 80 and 100 years old – when you move beyond making them ‘look pretty’, can demand enormous sums for updating the electrical wiring, rotten timber, chipped paint, and other ‘surprises’. It’s a task that takes time and skills which can stretch beyond a home handyman or handywoman’s ability. All that aside, however, the hard work, expense, and sacrifice are more than made up for with the joys of restoration and pride of ownership. There’s often a sense of history continuing too and I, for one, think that’s special. Christchurch is still home to suburbs that are renowned for providing exquisite restoration and renovation opportunities, so do take the time to get close and personal with them.

Health insurance or self insurance?

T Emily Walton Partner, Wynn Williams 021 972 155 wynnwilliams.co.nz

he uptake of private health insurance in New Zealand is dropping. With our public health system and ACC meeting the cost of urgent medical care, and some resultant income loss, you might ask “is health insurance worth it?” Self-insuring to save on insurance costs can be a valid option if you have selfdiscipline and won’t be tempted to spend your medical emergency fund on a tropical holiday or a new car. For most people, private health insurance is a good idea. Not only does it provide cover for non-essential medical treatment, more importantly, it also enables you to avoid public waiting lists and to choose your doctor. When you are battling a severe or chronic medical condition, timing and your choice of doctor can make all the difference. If you choose private health insurance, there are some critical considerations. Firstly, shop around and find the cover and cost that suits your needs. An insurance broker can help, and there are also websites online that can compare health insurance policies and premiums for you. Secondly, you will need to make full and frank disclosure of your medical history when taking out health insurance. Your health insurer can decline a claim if you fail to

38

disclose material information, for example, a pre-existing medical condition, illness or injury, even if the eventual claim is entirely unrelated to the initial non-disclosure. Smoking, mental health issues, and chronic pain conditions are all red flag areas here. Thirdly, the younger you are when taking out health insurance, the better; as you will usually have less medical history to remember and disclose (and potentially for the insurer to exclude from cover). Fourthly, if you can avoid it, it’s best not to change health insurer. Changing insurer will trigger a whole new disclosure obligation and the risk of you overlooking disclosing something. Finally, if you do make a claim and your insurer has concerns about that claim, it may decide to investigate, which can include obtaining your medical records and/or reviewing your social media presence. Most material non-disclosures are identified this way. Ultimately, while health insurance can meet your medical costs, your loss of income during a period of illness or incapacitation (not caused by an accident) can also be a significant burden. Income protection insurance, which can be bundled up with your health insurance, is worth considering too. So, what will it be: a holiday in Fiji or private health insurance?

DESTINATION

An Antarctic adventure Our city has a long history as the gateway to Antarctica, and it continues to be a proud part of Christchurch’s identity, with Sir Edmund Hillary commenting, “much of the history of Antarctic exploration has flowed through Christchurch”. Beginning over one hundred years ago, back in the age of exploration, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton used Ōtautahi as basecamp before their unprecedented voyages – setting sail from our little port town, Lyttleton. The team at Avenues are proud of this heritage too and we have tracked down some of the ways you can explore the cold continent – from a distance by visiting one of the attractions, exhibitions, and performances around Christchurch or from the comfort of a luxury yacht visiting the South Pole itself. So, get your winter woollies ready because we’ve got the gossip on what’s hot down south.

The Antarctic is awash with dramatically diverse scenery and unique wildlife, its west coast is a land of white icescapes, towering peaks, and a maze of protected channels – providing a home to vast colonies of penguins, seals, and pods of whales. Take a dive with the onboard sub, view humpbacks from the air, or absorb the majesty of the glaciers while you do yoga onboard. It’s exploring with much-needed luxury. The packages are return trips to Buenos Aires, and three have options including the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. here is often a sentiment that those who make their living in the country are disconnected from the progress of the city – for these farmers and producers, that could not be further from the truth. Because of a determined effort to be sustainable in practice, several hard-working locals were honoured at the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards. With green-tinted glasses on, winners across the Canterbury Plains shone thanks to the implementation of different techniques which aimed to improve the quality of life of the livestock and workers, but also protection of the environment as a whole. Hailing from Dunsandel, the Canterbury Supreme Regional winners Tony Coltman and Dana Carver of Canlac Holdings – a dairy herd – received the award thanks to their early adoption of research and method to reduce their carbon footprint. The pair, who took over the farm in 2013, has managed to reduce the nitrate leaching associated with dairy farming by 50 per cent. Keen to leave the piece of land in tip-top shape for future generations, Tony and Dana (pictured bottom left) have an ongoing planting programme underway that includes shelter and native plants. They’ve also made some technical improvements with the farm’s effluent area significantly increased, while they continually improve the sophisticated irrigation system and maintain the fertility of the soil. The pair are now eligible for the Gordon Stephenson Award, and they will be profiled alongside other Regional Supreme Winners at the Awards’ National Sustainability Showcase in Wellington on June 4.

In addition to the 2020 Supreme Regional Award, they also received the: Bayleys People in Primary Sector Award; DairyNZ Sustainability and Stewardship Award; Synlait Climate Stewardship Award; and the WaterForce Wise with Water Award. Robin Oakley, pictured bottom right, of Oakley’s Premium Fresh Vegetables in Southbridge – the leading supplier of several varieties of vegetables to one of the South Island’s most prominent food chains – won the Balance Agri-nutrients Soil Management Award, the Hill Laboratories Agri-Science Award, and the Massey University Innovation Award. Within their ethos is taking care of the small details with an environmental lens applied – meaning an innovative, agile approach is taken across the business, resulting in consistently highquality vegetables that meet the changing demands of consumers. Other winners included beef and deer farmers Mike and Nicky Salvesen from Wakare, Mount Somers (pictured centre right) who received the Environment Canterbury Water Quality Award and the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award. With a progressive vision for the future, the pair have actively reduced the farm’s environmental footprint. In essence, a substantial planting project has occurred, and the farming activities are carried out with an acute awareness of how action taken on the pasture can affect the surrounding environment. Also from the Mount Somers area, Richard and Chrissie Wright at Tamar Farm (pictured top) came away with the Norwood Agri-Business Award. The proof is in the parsnip that future of farming is bright – and sustainable – with farmers and producers like this at the helm.

Apple & walnut baked oatmeal Local foodie and photographer Nadia Eves shares her healthy creations and recipes through stunning photography over on her Instagram. “It all started with a passion for cooking healthy, nutritious, yet still delicious food. I love getting to experiment and showcase my recipes through my Instagram page to show the world it is so possible to still eat all of your favourite foods, no matter what diet you follow. All of the recipes I create are paleo based, gluten-free, and sugar-free.” One of my go-to things to eat when the weather starts to get cooler is a nice hot bowl of oats. I’ve created a baked version here with a few classic flavours like apple and cinnamon. This is such an easy dish to make, with it only taking a couple minutes to put together. Pop it in the oven to bake and you’re done! Once it’s cooked you can eat hot from the oven or save it in the fridge for breakfast for the week!

SERVES 4–6 | GLUTEN-FREE

2 cups of milk (whole or plant-based) ¼ cup of maple syrup 1 egg (use substitute to make vegan) 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence 2 cups of oats 2 cups of diced apples ½ cup of walnuts ½ cup of sultanas or raisins 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of baking powder ½ teaspoon of salt

Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease a slice tin. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together milk, maple, egg, and vanilla essence. Add in the remainder ingredients and mix thoroughly to combine. Pour mixture in pre greased slice tin and place in the oven. Cook at 180°C for 50–60 minutes. Serve warm with yoghurt for breakfast or ice cream for dessert. Can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for a few days.

t’s not often you’d cross a lawyer with a budding chef – but Elle Chrisp, the face behind Elle Herself manages to juggle both with ease. Elle Herself is a platform brimming with free recipes and fitness content as well as tips and tricks, for an active lifestyle. Elle created her website and social media as a way to document and share what she was doing to restore herself to her optimum best. “Entering into my 30s, I had fallen into some pretty bad habits, and my lifestyle choices meant that I was gaining weight, bloated all the time, and lacked energy. I didn’t want to start off a new decade feeling like rubbish.” Elle set out on a journey of selfimprovement and made it her mission to motivate and inspire others who feel like they can’t make a lasting change or reach their goals. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In the beginning, she felt like all the odds were stacking against her. While working as a junior litigation lawyer, the demands of the job meant it was hard to fit in workouts in around her daily routine. “I also found that I was using food as a mechanism for dealing with the stress and anxiety I felt. At the end of the day, all I wanted to do was sit on the couch and eat comfort food.” By following a ketogenic diet, Elle has lost 18 kilos, has more energy, clearer skin, better sleeping habits, and no longer has the dreaded ‘3pm sugar-slump’. You don’t have to buy expensive speciality products to follow keto. The majority of the

items Elle buys are from the supermarket and are easily accessible. “I always remind my audience that when it comes to weight loss, there isn’t anything particularly special about keto, other than because the food you’re eating is higher in fat, you feel full and more satisfied. This helps you maintain a moderate calorie deficit without feeling like you’re deprived or hungry – and if you maintain a calorie deficit for long enough, you lose weight.” Typical keto foods for Elle include granola with yoghurt and berries, chicken salads, and even nachos, curry, or even pizza. Dessert is absolutely on the menu – chocolate mousse, or jelly and cream. When quizzed about the future, Elle is excited. She hopes to start a family soon with her husband, Dave. “We’ve both always struggled with our weight, and this is the first time neither of us considers our weight an issue. We used to visit our doctors and be reminded that we were in unhealthy ranges, but all of that has changed. We will never go back to our old habits, so the future for us will continue to be filled with delicious keto recipes and embracing an active lifestyle following our favourite workouts. “You don’t have to be keto to enjoy my lowcarb, keto-friendly recipes, like my peppermint slice! They work perfectly for those who want to cut back on their gluten and sugar intake without feeling like you are missing out. Who can resist a slice of gluten-free, sugar-free peppermint slice?! Definitely not me!”

Cellar Door takes flight

T

he Cellar Door takes on an important mantle, as the very latest wine bar and tasting room in the centre city. Set in the historic School of Art building in The Arts Centre, the space – formerly occupied by Annie’s Wine Bar – has been swiftly brought into the now. After major structural overhauls, the co-owners and Christchurch wine industry stalwarts Kate Hide and Tim Ogle, said they ‘let the building speak to them’ and set to work on making the spot their own. And own it, they do. The sensitive restoration is pared back, comfortable, and rustic – meaning you’ll experience the Arts Centre spot in a whole new fashion. A fun fact: you’ll sit on bentwood chairs from famed and long-gone institution Le Bon Bolli, and latticed features on the bar and walls are made from barrels that held Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir a mere few months ago. Make sure you investigate the offer of ‘Wine Flights’. In the world of vino, a ‘flight’

describes a group of wines that are tasted side by side for comparison. The cheekily named flights (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Buttery, Everything Happens For A Riesling, et al.) are four 40ml tastes – adding up to a little more than a glass of wine, but with the added bonus of demonstrated differences in region, variety, winemaking style, and provenance. The seasonal menu on offer is simple, classical, and perfectly matched – tasty dishes for nibbles through to large plates for sharing, all designed to complement the large variety of wines on offer. Make sure you check out the ample list of daily cheeses behind the bar. There’s also plenty for the non-winos amongst us – craft beers, gin, whisky, cognac, aperitifs and digestifs, cocktails, as well as local soft drinks and a range of house-made soda syrups. There is no need for booking, just head on down. Kate, Tim, and the entire Cellar Door team will be chuffed you came to visit. Tell them we sent you!

Its unique twist comes from the Kwai Fe lychee liqueur, which may have some hidden benefits. Emperor Ming from the Tang Dynasty used to supply this to his consort in return for love and affection – is it really that easy? It’s mixed with peach schnapps, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and a touch of lime to make this cocktail a must-try this autumn! kaiserbrewgarden.co.nz

@Tony’s Ferrymead is an eastern branch of the Christchurch institution, known for teppanyaki. Okonomiyaki has slight variations throughout Japan – what arrived at Tony’s was a fritteresque version, well-cooked and rather solid compared to the others reviewed. The brown sauce and mayo were generous, and the waiter was most accommodating when it came to gluten-free and vegetarian options. All in all, the service was perfectly attentive and polite, and the teppanyaki grills were in full swing, but ultimately wasn’t our favourite destination. The dish could have been prepared with a little more panache, and the atmosphere was a tad reserved. Tell us if you experienced differently, and we’ll gladly try @Tony’s again.

A late-night visit to Kenzo meant we were one of only two tables, and the host graciously seated us even though it was close to closing. Bonus points, there! The okonomiyaki arrived swiftly and had come right off the hot plate – a sizzling dish with tiny swaying fish flakes. This was another okonomiyaki that was cooked firm, more like a pancake or fritter. The toppings were ample and delicious – a Japanese brown sauce and Kewpie mayo mixed well with the base. Other dishes ordered were more than complementary (fried tofu and the Kenzo signature tempura salmon sushi), and we ended up with a good variation on flavours and textures. Not bad. 54

Straight off the bat, Mori Mori wins points for feeling like an authentic Japanese experience. Sleepy warm lighting and beautiful plating meant we had been whirled away from Colombo Street and transported to Japan. We love the local feel of Mori Mori – the waiters know the regulars, and the regulars know Mori Mori. This means the staff are attentive with drinks, and additional dishes can be ordered easily. In our humble opinion, this okonomiyaki needs to be ordered with a few additional dishes, and perhaps shared with others – an excellent excuse for the lotus chips and sake rice crackers. The Mori Mori okonomiyaki is not a huge feast, but the overall flavour is fresh and delicious.

Lyttelton is Christchurch’s Portland; there’s no mistaking it. At the epicentre of all this alternative coolness, is Super. A Japaneseinspired restaurant and bar set in the oldest standing heritage building in the port town. It’s worth a trip through the tunnel. Super’s okonomiyaki is a meal and a half – with options to add meat and a serving size that rivals all other pancakes reviewed. It’s jam-packed with greens, piled with mayo, and arrives piping hot. The umami in this dish is next-level. Super’s 55

waiters are so friendly and down to earth – so much so, that when they had run out of a particular IPA, the banter that went with it meant we were treated to a few other options without feeling too let down. It’s a great crew, a beautiful, busy setting, and the dishes are mostly around the $20 mark – all reasonable for a night out for dinner. Do yourself a favour and order a plum wine on ice, and a side of the kumara fries. Possibly the best we’ve had. Super is just super, so go visit.

to get there, but it was very close. I went through the Lindis at 60km an hour, with a friend who was in a better model EV driving close in front of me the whole time reducing the energy I needed. I managed to get to Omarama with 20km spare. That was really fun, you feel like a pioneer, trying to blaze a new route, seeing if you can actually do it with the constraints. It’s a lot more fun than not having any challenge at all. “As I learned more about EVs, I became aware of all the reasons why we should be using them, from both the cost perspective and also the environmental perspective. I have this dream of New Zealand being a nation that doesn’t import oil, and all our vehicles are running off renewable power. In 10 years’ time – ideally, 100 per cent of new cars coming into New Zealand will be electric. I think that’s possible, but it’s going to depend on how much everyone gets behind it.”

“I’ve always been a bit of a sci-fi fan. I got into electric vehicles when I learnt about Tesla; I found out about Tesla through Space-X and Elon Musk. That started my spiral into suddenly caring about electric vehicles, ’cos I’m not a car guy, I’ve never really cared about cars. Now I spend my Sundays at car shows, talking to people about cars, and helping people test drive cars! It’s very bizarre in a way. “Being an early adopter has been an exciting experience. I went to Cromwell for an electric vehicle meet up in 2018. Leaving Cromwell, we had the choice of going back to Christchurch via Dunedin or coming back through Tekapo. But to go through Tekapo, which is the fastest way, you have to go through the Lindis Pass which is uphill to Omarama. “There’s an app which tells you how far you can probably get, based on elevation and everything. It said I wouldn’t be able
