I

’ve mentioned in previous editorials that I am fortunate enough to have travelled a fair bit of the world, but I’ve never mentioned my all-time favourite holiday; a family trip to Tangiteroria in the mid-’90s. Dad drove us from Christchurch, across the strait, and all the way up to the far north in a 1965 Vauxhall Victor, believe it or not! How it survived the trip, I’ll never know. At 11 years old, I hadn’t seen much of the New Zealand landscape, and I revelled in the ability to hang out the window like a cocker spaniel and wave at every car and truck we passed. It was a still, hot summer, and I’d anticipated this, our very first big family holiday for close to a year. While staying in an old farmhouse, we created lasting memories with some of our closest family. I remember a large wooden dining table, shared dinners, and lots of laughter. Mum (the quintessential rule breaker) took us to snoop through the summer house just up the hill from the farm. We found it packed quite literally to the rafters with turnof-the-century antiques, pictures, and clothing. I crashed a motorbike into a woodpile (who let me ride at 11?!) and fed cows, and shot at possums. It really doesn’t feel like thirty years ago, but here we are. We chose Here to There as the theme for this issue. We Kiwis love an OE, so whether you’re planning a tropical escape to Fiji (take inspiration from page 43 onwards) to celebrate the impending swan song of our winter or packing up your own Vauxhall for a roadie to visit family, we hope you find some inspiration within these pages for your escapades. Ōtautahi is the gateway to so many key southern destinations – whether you’re after hometown comforts, alpine adventures, or just simply a change of scenery, we’re well-placed to begin many a family memory right here. D

o you remember a film, a show, or a book from your childhood that made you want to be that person, go to that place, or do that job? Well, I do, many times over. And though I yearned to be an archaeologist (thanks Indiana Jones) and had a deep desire to travel the world in 80 days just as Phileas Fogg did or belt out Seasons of Love with a troupe of Rent cast members on Broadway, I found myself slipping into the shoes of the writers and journalists that had been constant characters bubbling away in my crock pot of media consumption. It’s their portrayal of anti-heroic ‘guardians’ of the world in dramatic interpretations that I found so gripping. They discovered things as Indiana did, travelled as Fogg did, and even had their moments on the stage – yet without the glitz and glamour of the more traditional hero. So, here’s to those anti-heroes that continue to inspire.

THE ANTITHESIS HERO

As a bit of a history buff, this is right up my street. Half-Arsed History strikes the perfect balance as a podcast; it’s exceptionally interesting and educational without boring the living daylights out of you. Host Riley Knight can finally use his history degree and delivers tales of some of the world’s biggest events and characters in an enthralling way.

The boys are back. Amazon Prime’s foray into the superhero genre, The Boys, is an unexpected triumph. With Kiwi Karl Urban taking a leading role alongside fellow Kiwi Antony Starr (of Outrageous Fortune fame), the series breaks the mould of what we have come to expect from a caped Crusader. It’s human, debaucherously deep, and not at all for the faint-hearted. An excellent watch.

THE WRITER One of the world’s most successful writers James Patterson, Along Came a Spider and Alex Cross, has penned an excellent memoir, James Patterson by James Patterson: The Stories of My Life. Perhaps what makes this so good is James’ mastery of colloquial writing. It is an exceptionally easy read, not because it is basic, but because it feels like you’re seated opposite James as he tells you the utterly fascinating story of his life.

NEW WORKS AT RAVENSCAR HOUSE Six large glass sculptures by contemporary artists from Aotearoa have been added to the galleries at Ravenscar House Museum. These artworks have been waiting in the wings since the House Museum opened last year while their steel display stands, delayed by Covid-19, were fabricated and installed. WATCH THIS SPACE Graffiti Game Artist Ikarus DTR Date March 2022 Location Welles Street When he was named as one of the headline artists for the 2022 Flare Street Art Festival, local graffiti legend Ikarus wanted to ensure his work represented his roots and spoke to the urban creatives following the same path he began decades ago. Mural festivals often marginalise graffiti art and its aesthetic in favour of more palatable images, creating a sense of disconnect for many young artists from the world of graffiti. For Ikarus, Flare was an opportunity to put graffiti’s traditions and styles on a large-scale platform. The artist is depicted at the bottom left, wearing virtual reality goggles as he enters the metaverse to play the game of graffiti. From tags to throw-ups, the pitfalls and the rewards, graffiti’s specifics unfold level upon level, eventually reaching mastery with a ‘masterpiece’ and a tribute to South Island graffiti icon Jungle. Matilda somersaults into town Roald Dahl fever will soon hit the city, with Showbiz Christchurch’s production of Matilda – The Musical somersaulting into the Isaac Theatre Royal on 16 September. Featuring an all-local cast of both naughty and nice characters, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin has penned a catchy and clever musical that is just as appealing to adults as it is for children.

Carla: I get in trouble at home for leaving things behind or losing things.

ith a cast of 19 talented children who sing, dance, and act through two hours of high-energy theatre, three younger actors playing Matilda (Millie Hutchinson, Carla Ladstaetter, and Eva Thompson) sat down with Avenues to share some insight into what’s important to Dahl’s little naughty heroine.

Tell us one strong woman you admire. Carla: It has to be my mum, of course! She is always there for me. Eva: Franc Bol, who started Luminaires Charitable Trust to give young people opportunities to be involved in theatre. Millie: I have two! My great-grandmothers – on both sides of my family. One received a Queen’s Service Order for services to local government in a time when it was difficult for women to hold such positions, and the other was still cross-country skiing at the age of 85!

Matilda loves books! What’s your favourite? Millie: At the moment, I am really into The Babysitters Club series by Ann N Martin. Eva: The Pages and Co series by Anna James. Carla: A Clue For Clara by Lian Tanner. She also adores her teacher. Who has been your favourite teacher? Millie: I love my teacher this year, Miss Rollo, because she is kind and really supportive of me. Eva: Mr Matthews because he is so nice and has really funny (dad) jokes. Carla: Mr Greening because he makes lots of jokes and learning is fun with him.

What’s been the best part of rehearsing? Carla: The experience of being in the story, the music with all the harmonies, and the relationships we all have together. Eva: Making a bunch of new friends. Millie: I have learned so much, gained so much confidence, and made so many amazing new friendships!!

Matilda thinks that ‘sometimes you need to be a little bit naughty’! What do you get in trouble for? Millie: Sneaking in extra screen time when Mum’s not looking! Eva: At home for doing cartwheels and tumbling inside (sometimes things get broken!).

Finish the sentence. Matilda is... Millie: …smart, determined, and a little bit mischievous! Eva: … really confident of who she is. Carla: …very smart, has magic powers and is caring for other people.

Agnes Thacker – “one of the best” WORDS Wendy Riley

F

or a time, Agnes Thacker had the distinction of being the first child born in Christchurch to pilgrims from the First Four Ships. Born at ‘The Bricks’, where her father had a wharf, she was the eldest child and only daughter of Essy Joynt and John Thacker. A newspaper man from Ireland, Thacker brought out printing machinery and set up the Christchurch Guardian. Its brief fourmonth existence ended when the “lack of adequate support” forced Thacker to “try his luck at the diggings” in Australia. On his return, the family moved to a house on Cashel street built with timber salvaged from shipwrecks. After a varied career as a publisher, trader, and steamer operator, Thacker moved his family to Okains Bay, where they took up farming and saw-milling. He built the first wharf and operated cargo and passenger vessels. Educated in Christchurch, Agnes returned to Okains Bay to manage the family’s large dairy. “In those days, the forest covered the peninsula, and pit sawyers worked by

hand. Food was brought in a whaleboat from Lyttelton, and the means of communication by land was through bush tracks.” When she was 12, her father took on the mail contract. Narrow tracks made riding difficult, so Agnes carried the mail on foot between Okains Bay and Akaroa. Before starting, and again on her return, she milked up to 25 cows. s the South Island’s largest community event, The New Zealand Agricultural Show has an extensive history. With 2022 welcoming its 159th year, this iconic cross-generational event brings together a passionate group of rural exhibitors, innovators, and celebrators, helping to bridge the urban-rural divide during three days packed with competition, entertainment, and fun. After a two-year absence from its traditional foundations, The Canterbury Agricultural & Pastoral Association is proudly showcasing a triumphant return. It’s bigger, better, and focused on the future of our region. Many will have memories of the rural games, and this year, it is set to return old favourites. New Zealand Rural Games Trust founder Steve Hollander said, “The Show is an iconic South Island event, with a long relationship with rural sports like gumboot throwing, timber sports and more. We’re excited to bring some of the Rural Games offerings to Canterbury.” On top of the traditional games, a raft of new rural-focused events for rangatahi and tamariki will premiere in 2022. Run by the New Zealand Rural Games Trust, these games are designed for our rural communities and for those interested in learning more about rural life. The Clash of the Colleges is a hands-on amazing-race-styled event developed to increase the skill level of the next generation. The Kids n’ Country event is all about having a go, with everything from hay bale racing, sack racing, cow pat throwing, pedal tractor racing, and face painting. The adults get to play too! ‘The Show’ is host to some of the best South Island craft brewers and boutique vineyards. Their beautiful fruit is then transformed into pure, artisan wines. Last but certainly not least is the Iron Ridge Quarry Sculpture Park. Sculptor Raymond Herber purchased the abandoned lime works in 1997 and transformed the quarry into a magical wonderland. His own work, along with guest artists, lies carefully curated around the dramatic landscape, nestled in under the shadow of the breathtaking hillside. H

ave you felt it, that incredible desire to leave our shores? Have you dreamt of sitting by a pool somewhere tropical, looking at the sights in any of the capitals of the world or foraging through markets in southeast Asia? If you have, you’re not alone. I’ve often found myself dreaming about travelling (anywhere, absolutely anywhere!) over these two-and-a-half Covid-influenced years. Now, with the opening of world travel and the lifting of many of the restrictions that made it so difficult, it’s become a highly anticipated reality. The beautiful thing about travel is that it shakes you out of your routine whilst providing experiences that excite and invigorate – and now my own wanderlust has been rekindled, having just returned from a trip to Paris with my husband, John. There is nothing like absence to make your heart grow fonder or at least beat a little faster. What did we find in this, the City of Lights (which, by the way, pertains to the fact that there are 50,000 streetlights, most of them impressive black antiques, and 33 of the city’s 37 bridges are illuminated at night)? We found a city that was energised and manic. Both hot (at times 40°C +) and extremely busy with international visitors. The consequence was enormously long lines wherever attractions, galleries, or cafés could be found. And do you think even one person had a mask on? No, not one. Nor was there any evidence of social distancing, and if you have ever seen how closely French restaurants

position their tables, then you’ll know what it feels like to sit almost cheek-to-cheek with your neighbour becoming a passive smoker at the same time (France has the dubious reputation of one of the highest percentages of smokers in Europe)! It’s all part of the experience: exploring different surroundings, hearing different languages, and trying your best to at least murmur the simplest of French phrases. As is chancing yourself to cross main roads without getting run over by cyclists, who appeared oblivious to any form of road safety regulations. There are major cycleways in Paris and the fact that very few cyclists wear helmets, despite being surrounded by motorists jockeying for space, makes for some terrifyingly close calls. All of this contributes to the culture, and, for me, being reacquainted with the best art in the world adds greatly to that, in addition to daily observations and interactions. In fact, it’s the stuff of dreams, my dreams, and I’m grateful. So, grab that chance to travel, and see what the rest of the world has been doing during these periods of isolation. It’s been moving on, and it’s time to catch up. Little wonder travel agencies are reporting that they’re busier than ever! It doesn’t have to be a long trip to be a trip of a lifetime. It can challenge, it can change, and whether it’s Paris or the Gold Coast, a getaway within our own borders, or somewhere much further, if you get the chance, take it.

I

was in the middle of a 10-day Covid isolation period when the deadline for this month’s travel issue was looming. As much as I wanted to pull together a column that waxed lyrical about how my favourite way to travel is through my stomach, I found myself experiencing the fascinating phenomenon: the complete absence of taste. For someone whose job it is to taste food and make something meaningful of it, by day three, I was both intrigued and disheartened. It was the most bizarre experience to have a familiar ingredient on my tongue and not be able to differentiate whether it was an orange, lemon, or mandarin. I’ve always savoured the food I eat. Friends often comment about how slowly and thoughtfully I consume each meal. I’m genuinely interested in the nuances of flavour, and textures and temperature. The tingly sensations of Sichuan pepper, the chew of thick noodles, and the way the addition of sea salt flakes on a dark chocolate cookie balances the bitter cocoa, making it sweeter and even more chocolatey. Upon googling ‘how do I get my taste back?’ at 4.50am, I discovered that losing your taste is most often a result of losing your smell. When we eat, the flavour molecules are carried from our mouth into our olfactory receptors, found in our nose – it’s here that they are perceived as taste.

I also stumbled upon the idea of scent training, where you inhale strong and aromatic foods like citrus, peppermint, ginger, and peanut butter for 10-20 seconds each day. I started making my way around the pantry, sniffing the peanut butter jar, taking spoonfuls of mint choc chip ice cream, and making very gingery lemon drinks. Tangy citrus, strong mānuka honey, and even wasabi (with its intense nosetingling burn) gave me some experience of a sensation. I could taste if something was sweet, sour, salty, or bitter, but I couldn’t differentiate the characteristics that set each ingredient apart. Taste isn’t all about flavour. Texture and mouthfeel play a big part as well. I discovered a new appreciation for varying textural sensations. Everything from the crunch of corn chips, chocolate melting on my tongue, and the bite of a fresh carrot to the grinding of roasted cashew nuts between my teeth. Despite feeling some sensation, without any complexity or detail, anything I ate felt dull and unsatisfying because it didn’t match up with how my brain remembered it should. If you, too, have been plagued by the loss of taste or smell through this Covid saga, you’ll understand exactly what I mean. Safe to say, when my ability to taste returns, I’ll be stoked.

Inspired by the flavours and flames of Andalusian cookery, Alma prides itself on being both familiar and foreign. I can personally attest to their infamous anchovy tomato tostada, a hunk of sourdough slathered with tomato butter and four giant anchovies laid to rest. It’s decadent and ridiculously moreish. With Spanish wines and vermouth, alongside a curated gin list, the food offering includes a meltingly tender lamb tagine with yoghurt and zhoug and a bowl of mushrooms drowned in brown butter that you cannot miss. The stunning brick and tile fit-out transports you to Spain; the open kitchen allows you to watch head chef Jo Pearson and her team create empanadas, beef tongue with olives or my death row dessert, Basque cheesecake. If you’re traipsing through Britomart anytime from 11am, make your way here.

For passionate and plant-curious diners like me, going to Forest is like taking your tastebuds to an exciting outdoor adventure park. Owner and full-time pickler Plabita Florence is a young, vibrant, and incredibly creative chef who utilises all parts of the ingredient, making dishes like sticky purple kūmara with Marmite cream, paprika, capers, and olives through to caramelised butternut ice cream with rosemary sherbet, coffee syrup, and rhubarb. The three-course vegetarian or vegan menu changes every week – apart from the favourite seaweed fries with an addictive toasted chilli ‘goop’. In her tiny 16-seat restaurant, located on Symonds Street, while you’re sipping on a green apple whiskey sour with apple skin sugar, she can (and likely will) single-handedly transform the way you think about vegetables. Forest is plant wizardry at its finest.

Tucked up on Shortland Street, Hugo’s charm exists in its stylish dining room, a deceptively simple yet complex menu by Head Chef Alfie Ingham and the gentle, generous hospitality of his wife, Sophie. The grilled flatbread with washed rind cheese, thyme, and honey has my heart, and anything involving ‘Hugo’s chilli crisp’. This weekday-only dining oasis offers glorious things to eat and drink from morning ’til night. I first experienced wapiti or elk here recently, a Fiordland deer with super lean and tender red meat (like venison), served medium rare alongside celeriac, quince, and an unctuous bone marrow jus. For dessert, I still think about the wild and whimsical olive oil semifreddo, a sweet and seductively sticky frozen mousse that is cut through with grassy oil and salt flakes. A lesson in liberal balance.

ADA 454 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland @ada_akl Since emerging onto Auckland’s culinary landscape in November 2020, Ada has shone brightly. Inspired by Italian fare, I’ve become a die-hard fan of its modern, seasonally changing, sharing-style menu. It’s located in The Convent, a historic Grey Lynn nunnery that’s been brought back to life as a 22-room boutique hotel. Deep in the back, you’ll find the dining room, with high glass ceilings, exposed brick, and a food and wine offering

that is both approachable and adored. Chef Hayden Phiskie (ex Cotto) is at the helm in the kitchen, churning out pizza fritta, a puffy fried dough adorned with toppings such as cacio e pepe or ricotta, pinenuts, and cime di rapa (turnip tops). I’m confident the fried Brussel sprouts with stracciatella, aged balsamic, and mint here could convert any sprout doubter. The beef short rib with ‘nduja (a spicy, spreadable salami), beetroot,

and walnuts; is the most flavourful bite of red meat I’ve had all year. But mostly, it’s about the pasta. All handmade, ethereally thin, and always drenched in an alluring and glossy sauce. From saffron spaghetti with crème fraîche and leeks to a pork fazzoletti/ handkerchief pasta. I go to eat but also to sit in the bar courtyard to drink the cutest and most delicious pre-bottled cocktail, the Chocolate Negroni.

hat does one do when they’re at a loose end during lockdowns? Bake lockdown loaf, froth up some whipped coffee, or binge watch all of Downton Abbey? How about making cheesecake and getting really good at it. This is exactly how Bored Emma Cheesecakes was born. Emma Schimanski is the woman behind Bored Emma Cheesecakes. As managing director of the Banks Peninsula Festival, the stops and starts we have all experienced over recent years meant Emma was looking for a creative outlet to scratch that itch. Through scouring Christchurch’s backyard on Banks Peninsula, Emma uses locally-sourced produce and

Thanks to her larder of unique ingredients, she is able to pull off some daring combinations like damson and gin, hawthorns and juniper, whiskey and grapefruit, sage and walnut, and even Central Otago thyme and rosemary. These are not your run-of-the-mill store-bought cheesecakes; they are a reflection of Emma’s passion and the landscape and amazing produce around her. They are also pretty bloomin’ delicious. In 2022, plain old cake is boring, and Emma aims to share an elevated dessert experience with her customers. Through her choice of modern palate collaborations that offer an all-around taste sensation, Emma is able to shake up the cheesecake and deliver something truly worth celebrating.

Tin Lizzy 1911

T

hey made tens of millions of Tin Lizzies – 10,000 cars a day at their peak – but every time I drive this beautiful contraption, I feel like I’m the only person in the world. Part of it is they are now few and far between – this one lives at the Nelson Classic Car Museum, coming out on rare occasions – but part of it is that the driving experience is so strange. Forward and reverse gears are selected with your feet, and the handbrake lever is used to get you into second (which is top) gear. There isn’t even an accelerator pedal; instead, you swing levers on the steering wheel to control your speed and other things that computers do for you in modern cars. 111 years old, restored by a man called Tiger, painted in a chook shed, still sporting the original leather seats, and dicing it up with modern traffic. That’s pretty special in my book.

Light at the end of the EQC tunnel

S

ometimes getting from here to there is not about travelling in the conventional sense. The first thing I thought of when our lovely editor Joshua mentioned this month’s theme of ‘here to there’ was the light at the end of the EQC tunnel. I know some people are sick of hearing about anything to do with the earthquakes, insurers, and EQC but a surprisingly large number of Cantabrians haven’t yet reached the end of the long road back to normal (whatever that is). If all is going to plan, about two weeks after this edition hits the shelves and interweb, our more than 100-year-old ‘forever’ home will be forever gone. I didn’t think I’d feel much emotion about our failed EQC repair being bulldozed. The cracks in the foundation, the gaps around the door frames, and jamming a sock in the door to stop it from swinging open by itself have all been constant reminders of the nightmare so many have been through. Almost five years after we moved in with two teens in tow (they have left home now), our home is being reduced to rubble, and we’re building a new one. This is the second time we have lost a house to the quakes; the first was destroyed by the February quake, and this has been destroyed by ineptitude and bad decisions. But it’s the fruit trees we planted at both homes, growing to produce beautiful fruit, that reminds me about what time can achieve. My late dad loved fruit trees, so they always make me think of him. The Sundrop and Moorpark apricots, the Black Doris plum and Peasgood Nonsuch apple – they will be gone soon too. Nevertheless, we can and will plant more. We have our plans; the consents are pretty straightforward, and we are advised that we should be opening the door to the new house nine months from the build start date. Until then, Rob and I, with Billy, the greyhound, will hunker down in Dylan the Housebus alongside Edith the Suzuki and dream of apricots, plums, and apples growing in our garden again. P.S. Our thoughts are with those of you still not out the other side of the earthquake ‘here to there’ yet.

“I moved to Christchurch in 1993. I was 14 years old, [and] came over with pretty much the whole family. My father’s brother moved to New Zealand a long time ago, like, 50, 60 years ago. “I’ve got two older brothers. They went straight into the workforce, but I was lucky enough to get educated in New Zealand. I’ve done a couple of diplomas. I found myself a job at a construction company as a draftsman, and then I worked for an import company where I took up the role of a manager. “My wife is from China as well. So, by the time she came over, I tried what I could to support her and the family at the same time. We started a lunch bar in town called the Cake Tin, but I lost the business in 2010 due to earthquakes. Luckily, we got out of there, but it pretty much put me back to ground zero. That’s also the time we had our first child. Yeah, so that’s why life was turned upside down. “It was pretty rough, but we’re still standing here. All the family is here, so it’s hard to pack up and just leave. I decided to stay. Family

always comes first. It took me about three to four months to find another business in Bromley and start again. I also got this café; I was running both of them. But I struggled to run both cafés at the same time, so I decided to sell that one. “And then we had the terror attack. We are only a few hundred metres from where it happened, so it had effects. And then Covid started, so it’s not fun. Over the last two years, I’ve been trying my best, and unfortunately, I lost one staff member to try to keep it viable. It’s not easy. But I must admit I have had great support from the staff, the landlord, and all the regular customers. “I quite enjoy doing the café business. You have such a relaxed environment, and people come in having their cuppas and food; everybody’s nice and social and chatting to each other. “Lately, I’m enjoying snorkelling with friends. We’ve been to Wainui, Kaikōura, and Gore Bay. It’s quite fun, and it’s great travelling in the car with friends talking about the week.”
