YEAH The Felt.co.nz Christmas Gift Guide. BBQ season – dust off the salad cookbooks. EDITOR’S NOTE
Canterbury’s beaches. Pack your sunscreen though!
It’s been a year
Breakfast at The Fig! Delicious! Resene Soiree is a fading evening glow, diffused pink oxide and terracotta.
NAH It’s too windy! Rough winds do shake the darling buds of… Canterbury. Overseas contractors holding us to ransom! The state of the city’s overgrown berms. Time to employ an army of goats? The first summer with water charges. No more children running through the sprinklers?
A
s I write this, it’s evident that summer is on the horizon. The air is dry, and I can sense it will be a long, hot one. It has also been a year since I began my role as editor. I made it! We’ve knocked off 11 issues; it’s been an action-packed year. We tried some new things in 2023. We introduced two wonderful new columnists, Chelita Zainey and Hannah Harte, who brought their unique perspectives to our pages and and we also welcomed Sam Parish as Food Editor. Sam shared her flair for food and helped us deliver two amazing Avenues Eats events, with Bubbles and Bites: Queens of Cake and A Mediterranean Brunch. Our magazine is such a great synopsis of our city and beyond; we’ve covered exciting additions to our cityscape, people that make us unique, the artists making their mark, and food, so much glorious food! This issue is no different, and we continue to highlight the best of Christchurch and beyond, and we ‘Keep it Kiwi’ for summer. Our themed features focus on sustainable tourism, and we explore a wellness retreat set within an ancient beech forest, a new walkway making the most of Dunedin Harbour, and take a whirlwind tour of Southland, a region where over half of its land is conservation estate. Thank you for being with us for 2023. I’ve loved getting to know you! Enjoy this summer wherever you are.
Yours,
Liam Stretch Editor

t’s time to play in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival will be hitting the streets of Ōtautahi Christchurch for its 31st year from 19–28 January 2024. Bread & Circus is one of the most loved and attended events in Ōtautahi’s summer calendar, transforming the city into the ultimate playground for colour, chaos, and charisma. The festival just won the title of the Best Arts or Cultural Event at the 2023 New Zealand Event Awards. The 2024 festival will run for 10 days straight during the summer school holidays in the heart of central Christchurch across multiple busking pitches and venues. Festival Director Scott Maidment says, “Bring out your inner child as we blend home-grown talent, festival favourites, as well as some fresh faces from far-flung locations. The line-up will see some mind-blowing acrobats, trapeze artists, and magicians, as well as comedians, musicians, and dancers, take to the streets and stage.” As the city comes alive with the vibrant energy of the festival, there is no better time to check out some of the best hospitality spots in between shows. In Ōtautahi, you are spoilt for choice when wining and dining. Right in the heart of all the busking action is Riverside Market – an indoor market and one of Ōtautahi’s most loved foodie spots. If you are heading to an evening show and fancy making a night of it, head to The Terrace for world-class dining, set along the beautiful Ōtākaro, Avon River. Or check out New Regent Street. It boasts an abundance of unique restaurants, vibrant bars, and indulgent dessert spots. You might even catch the tram running down the middle of the street. It’s as iconic to Christchurch as it gets! Go to breadandcircus.co.nz to find out more about the festival. breadandcircus.co.nz

GONE DOWN IN HISTORY
She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai and Naruki Nagakawa (translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori) brings together the stories of local cats on the outskirts of Tokyo as they weave through their homes and the lives of their owners as they navigate difficult times. A mesmerising, joyous, strange, and effortless read.
Wellington-based singer, songwriter, and producer Jessica Leigh has just released her EP, Lightbeam. Jessica is an excellent example of the maturing New Zealand music identity. These latest tracks have an 80s synth vibe but are ethereal, boppy, and lyrically magical. This excellently produced EP has a uniquely Kiwi feel but global appeal.
It’s a piece of history we all know – the assassination of President John F Kennedy. With so much said about the events, cutting through the noise and diving deep can be challenging. JFK: One Day in America, new to Disney+, covers the events that unfolded on 22 November 1963. Though fact, you’ll be gripped throughout this three-part special.
BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES Written and directed by Alice Englert (Oscar-winning director Jane Campion’s daughter), Bad Behaviour begins with promise, only to fizzle towards the end. We see excellent performances by Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun: Maverick), Ben Whishaw (Paddington), and even Englert herself, which take a snapshot of their complicated and nuanced mental health stories. Interestingly, the movie meets its crescendo halfway through, an optimal ending, yet it dawdles on for another hour to answer some half-baked questions.

WATCH THIS SPACE Christchurch Hip Hop Summit Graffiti Jam 2023 Artists Drows (pictured) and additional artists Date September 2023 Location 248 St Asaph Street When a dozen local artists gathered for the 2023 Christchurch Hip Hop Summit graffiti jam, it hardly felt like we had started towards the summer months. Heavy rainfall made painting hard (ultimately extending the event’s completion by a week), but the energy of the jam signposted the optimism and excitement that is synonymous with this time of year. The colours, combining bright greens and pinks against fiery orange backgrounds, and the congregation of creatives exemplified the spark that summer brings when increasing activations can be found across the city, providing a pervasive feeling of artistic rejuvenation and possibility. The graffiti jam component of the Summit provides a vital platform for one of hip hop’s foundational elements. Graffiti is a visual exemplification of the culture’s emphasis on style, manipulating and reimagining letterforms with a signature flair, evident here in Drows’ rolling and overlapping forms. By creating a legal platform, we can shift our observation to an aesthetic focus, recognising the unique creative qualities of this art form. BONOBO To owners Deane Simmonds and Annelies Basten, Bonobo isn’t just a café; it’s a sanctuary on a mission to spread kindness to the planet, animals, and everyone who walks through its doors. Four-legged friends are embraced both inside and outside this Sumner plant-based haven, with dedicated dog bowls and treats available. The BonoBowl, Big Love Breakfast, and the Boss Burger are dishes that continuously prove popular. Beyond the food, Bonobo is a hub for community connection. Annelies describes it as a space with a warm and positive energy, where people and animals alike feel at home, surrounded by laughter, hugs, and boundless kindness.
FRANCES NATION Operating since 2017, Frances Nation feels like a long-standing Christchurch institution. Offering top-quality New Zealand-made goods, it has dramatically expanded its home store across the ground floor of Old The Boys High Building at The Arts Centre, with its café right next door serving coffee, lunch, and real fruit ice cream. A stone’s throw from Hagley Park, their garden seating facing Worcester Boulevard is popular for a post-dog walk coffee. Pups are allowed inside the café and home store. In the home store, you will even find dog accessories such as locally-made leather leads and natural dog soap. The café has Joe Bennett’s dog treats on offer and plenty of water. For the two-legged customers looking for refreshment, every Friday evening over summer, the café transforms into a little wine bar – serving a range of wine, beer, and bar snacks until 10 pm. It’s relaxed and family-friendly, and yes, the family dogs are very welcome!

THE BREWERY BAR & RESTAURANT
DUX DINE AND DUX LIVE
At The Brewery in Woolston, dogs are very welcome. Dogs on leads and under control are allowed under the weatherproof marquee, which provides shelter from the elements year-round, and water bowls are also provided. For owners to enjoy while their pup chills out is a new summer menu, and year-round, they have a range of weekly deals, like Monday, kids eat free with any paying adult or come the weekend, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, grab the Takeaway Deal, which is two pizzas, one fries, and a twolitre rigger of beer for $70. Adjacent to The Brewery, The Tannery is also dog-friendly. It is up to each store’s discretion, but many of them love canines and even have their own store dogs! The Tannery’s Christmas Store is open now, and a Christmas Market is on 7 December, with live music, a bar, complimentary canapés, and extended store hours – and, of course, dogs are welcome!
Both Riccarton’s Dux Dine and the central city’s Dux Central have expansive outdoor spaces where they provide water bowls and have dog treats available at the bar. They also offer Dog Beer for purchase. Perfect for pooches is Dux Dine’s courtyard garden. It’s sheltered, and you wouldn’t know you were on Riccarton Road as it’s so quiet. For dog owners, the Crusted Fish is highly recommended. This is a dish that has not changed since its opening, as it’s their absolute number one signature dish. You also can’t go past the scones, including their famous toasted cheese (“best in Christchurch”) with salmon and cream cheese mousse, or date scone with cream and berry coulis. 28 Riccarton Road, duxdine.co.nz 6 Poplar Street, duxcentral.co.nz

Enjoy a coffee and scone or a cocktail after a beach day; they promise summery vibes! Live music graces Saturday afternoons and Friday evenings in summer. With a large dog-friendly courtyard, it’s perfect for a pint with your pup post-beach. They care for thirsty canines, provide fresh dog bowls, and offer free puppacinos on weekend brunch bookings! A new menu has just launched too, with the desserts coming highly recommended – the chocolate panna cotta comes with cocoa crumbs, freeze-dried raspberries, and house-made peanut butter ice cream. It’s seriously good. Explore the new Coastal Pathway, hit the beach, and visit Sumner Social this summer!
GRATER GOODS With the roller doors open this summer, Sydenham’s Grater Goods is the perfect spot for canine friends! URBAN EATERY For the owners of Urban Eatery Cashmere, their fluffy family is a huge part of their lives. It started with Shepherds and now a headstrong Shih Tzu named Betty goes with them wherever they go. So, to them, it was logical that their non-threatening and accepting cafés allowed them as well. Owner Manu says, “I recently heard a saying that resonated with me. From the eyes of a dog, ‘I may be only one chapter in your life, but to me, you are my whole chapter.’ So who wants to leave their dog in the car or at home?” The food on offer is a full à la carte and cabinet offerings. With an extensive cabinet range from savoury items through to all types of slices, everything is made fresh.

HEALTHY PLANET, HEALTHY PEOPLE
I
n the heart of Tasman, Maruia River Retreat is a haven for well-being and healing, not only for people but for the planet. Founded by husband and wife Lasse and Cristina Holopainen, the pair have long understood their connection with the land, and they started their foray into eco and wellness tourism with a yoga studio in the Philippines called Urban Ashram, which is one of Manila’s most popular. Later, they ran Easy Adventure, an off-grid, eco-glamping surf and yoga resort in Baler, the birthplace of surfing in the Philippines. 2018 saw the Holopainens make New Zealand their home, and they settled into a 500-acre estate just outside Murchison. This decision was not merely a change of location but a conscious effort to weave nature into their project, to counter how modern life has stripped us of many ways we would once interact with the natural world. The retreat comprises seven luxe villas, a spa for massages, facials, saunas, and contrast therapy, and even a private airstrip. By only accommodating 12 guests and five staff, Cristina says this gives them the chance to really experience its natural elements, especially the jewel in the crown of the estate – a 180-hectare private nature reserve on the border of Kahurangi National Park, home to old-growth trees, rare bird species, and native flora and fauna. It’s this ancient, natural space that Cristina says helps guests understand the connection between people and the earth. “There are thousands of trees giving you pure oxygen and energy, and all they want from you is carbon dioxide. So it’s really a heightened sensory experience,” she says. “There is a lot about nature that reflects humanity. The source of our energy comes from nature: the food we eat, the air we
breathe, the water we drink. It’s about reciprocity.” Further enhancing their commitment to the environment is an ambition to be a fully electric resort powered by renewable sources. Their determination to walk the talk is evident in the development of an on-site mini-hydro plant. This electrification also includes e-bikes, e-scooters, and buggies, complemented by the expansion of onsite tracks. This mindset also extends to the food on offer. “We put a lot of love into it, and it tastes better because everything is from here.” Granola is handmade in Nelson, pears for juice are picked in Canterbury, and honeycomb and bee pollen are harvested from their hives, while fresh bread is baked every morning. These strides have been noticed, and Qualmark awarded them the Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Award. At Maruia, wellness is approached holistically. Different retreats are centred around hearty meals, walks in the natural environment, meditative sessions, wellness workshops, deep sleep experiences, and guided yoga by Cristina or Lasse. These are designed to mirror everyday life, says Cristina. “Every day, you walk, you eat, you sleep, you do leisure activities, you pamper yourself, and you work. The only thing missing here is the work. But the real work is actually finding the balance to rest. What we’re trying to do is elevate the everyday experiences in a more mindful manner.” With the holiday season approaching, Cristina thinks it’s important for people to make the chance to celebrate life. “There’s something special about imprinting in your body the sense of joy and celebration. And you can only find that when it’s quiet.”

Why river cruise? River cruising has become immensely popular and for good reason. House of Travel shares some advice with Avenues readers. WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?
WHAT TO EXPECT ON LAND
Think of it as a luxury hotel on the river. All travel and excursion arrangements are handled while you soak up the scenery. The real charm lies in waking up to a new city or town every day without the hassle of packing and dragging luggage from place to place. No airport or transport hassles, just a worry-free experience.
You’ll have access to exceptional onshore excursions led by expert English-speaking guides. While independent exploring is an option, following the cruise line’s lead ensures a curated experience.
WHO TAKES RIVER CRUISES? These cruises attract curious and sophisticated travellers who appreciate luxury, excellent dining, and a preference for hostedstyle holidays. Some cruise lines cater to active enthusiasts with options like bike tours, jogging, and even painting classes.
QUESTIONS TO ASK When comparing cruises, it’s crucial to inquire about inclusions. Accommodation and meals are typically covered, but some cruises include drinks, cocktails, shore excursions, and gratuities in the upfront fare. It’s also important to ask about stateroom options. Basic cabins often have a waterline window, but you can book into balcony cabins and larger suites for a small price increase. Also, ask the best time to travel.
WHAT TO EXPECT ONBOARD Luxury is the letter. With a limited number of guests, dining becomes a sociable affair. Crew members often know guests by their first names within a short time. Evening entertainment is low-key; think lectures on your destination’s history and cultural shows, nightly movies, and often a pianist filling the bar.
WHERE CAN I GO ON A RIVER CRUISE? Europe is a prime destination, with rivers like the Seine, Rhine, and Danube offering rich itineraries. Beyond Europe, rivers in Asia, South America, and Africa are becoming enticing cruise destinations.
CHOOSING ITINERARIES It’s best to choose a river or route that features what interests you most. Check out the departure and finishing points, flight options, and the possibility of extending your holiday. House of Travel consultants can guide you in this decision.
DINING ONBOARD Chefs offer classic and contemporary European cuisine, accommodating various dietary requirements – don’t fret, vegans and vegetarians! Skilled bartenders often craft cocktails inspired by the destination.
PACKING TIPS Attire tends to be stylish, smart casual for dinners and excursions so you can leave the suits and sequins at home. Dress comfortably and wear walking shoes for day excursions, while a slightly smarter outfit is suitable for dinner.

IN DETAIL
LIFE IN BALANCE FOR BOWLER Lea Tahuhu can’t wait for the upcoming Pakistan series to get started. Hagley Oval holds a special place in the pace bowler’s heart as a born and bred Cantab. Playing junior cricket at St Albans Cricket Club, Tahuhu loved seeing the venue expand and evolve and looks forward to seeing Ōtautahi turn it on for the summer of cricket. Avenues sat down with the record-holding WHITE FERN to chat all things cricket and Ōtautahi Christchurch.

What’s it like to be playing back on Hagley this summer? I’ve been playing on the oval since I was eight, and while it’s looking very different today, it’s a fantastic ground and an asset to the city. What they’ve done to develop the ground and the pitch as well – it must be one of, if not THE best in the country. Rupert and his groundsmen hold that very special to their heart and produce a fantastic pitch. When you’re playing at home, you play in front of your family and friends, and for me in particular, it’s special to be able to speak to those on the side-line and have some fun while you’re there playing. Having that personable contact is super special to the oval. As a team this summer, the WHITE FERNS are looking to play an exciting brand of cricket. We’ve got some really big hitters, fast bowlers, and talented spinners putting pressure on teams when we’re bowling, and we’ll work a few balls over the boundary when we’re batting – if you want to be entertained, bring the family down and have a great experience. How does it feel to be the first WHITE FERN to take 100 ODI wickets? It’s incredibly special to be the first WHITE FERN to reach 100 ODI wickets; no one can take that away from me. Others will go on to take 200 wickets, but they’ll never be the first. I’m not a huge milestone person, but in reflection, it’s something I’m incredibly proud of, especially having to overcome a bit of adversity throughout my career, and I know my family is extremely proud as well. As a pace bowler, I’ve had my fair share of injuries keeping me on the side-line for long stints of time. Having to mentally wrap your head around another rehab and training with no possibility of playing for several months is challenging at times. I’m really proud of being able to show that character, find the motivation and fight my way back in. For anyone who faces those trials, it’s just about continuing to turn up. If you’ve got a drive within you and believe you are enough, then never give up.
as it was very much our routine of life. Heading to training together in the morning, picking bub up from preschool, going to the park with the dog or those simple family things. They’re what you miss when you’re away on tour, and you’re in such a structured routine. All you see is the bus, the hotel, and the cricket ground, and an outsider could think it’s this exotic life you’re living, touring the country, touring around the world, but that’s not always the case. Coming home to that balanced family routine is always really special. While cricketers don’t style themselves as foodies, we certainly eat some serious cuisine all around the world! As a team, we’re lucky the wonderful Maddy Green takes notes of all the best spots around the country and around the world, and if we end up in that city again, we head straight to our favourites. We’ve recently found the coolest Japanese restaurant here called Bar Yoku, tucked away in the back of The Welder – if you haven’t been, you gotta go! As far as free and fun things to do, Margaret Mahy Playground is a must. It’s so much fun watching your three-year-old climbing to the top of the big slide or get stuck up the top of the tower. I’ve had to scale that a couple of times on a rescue mission. Amy is from a farm, and Grace picked up a love of animals, so we’ve got an annual pass to Orana Park and Willow Bank and get there as much as we possibly can, too.

The architecture of outdoor spaces
W Richard Dalman Managing Director, Dalman Architects dalman.co.nz
ith summer upon us bringing warmer temperatures and longer days, we have the opportunity to spend more time enjoying the outdoors – whether it’s a BBQ with friends and family, relaxing in a shady spot with a good book, or playing with kids in the sunshine. In most cases, both natural and built landscapes will play a part. As architects, we have considerable influence over the design of these outdoor spaces and often work with our landscape architect colleagues to create a total outdoor living environment. For residential buildings, we think about outdoor areas in terms of public/private, sunny/shaded, windy/sheltered, views to and from, and indoor/outdoor flow. All of these considerations relate to changing climatic conditions diurnally and seasonally. We considered all those factors when designing the Water House. Starting from the interior, there was the opportunity for unobstructed views out to the water and stacking sliding doors, allowing a seamless flow to the outdoors. By the water, the opportunity to sit at a lower level than an overhanging deck was created. And on the deck itself, above the
44
water, we can feel totally exposed out in the big landscape of the Ihutai Estuary reaching out to the sea beyond. It’s a great place to be on those early Christchurch mornings when the sun shines and there is no wind. But when the ‘Easterly’ blows, shelter is needed, so a courtyard was formed, enclosed by the house as it wraps around it, delivering protection but allowing the afternoon sun to penetrate. Large sliding doors enable the interior to connect with this ‘outdoor room’, and a ceiling heater under an overhang ensures it can be used for alfresco dining even on chilly evenings. Coastal-appropriate planting selected in conjunction with a landscape architect contributes to a sense of enclosure in this courtyard haven and creates a softer, more intimate landscape than that by the water. As well as creating outdoor spaces conducive to relaxation and recreation, practical aspects must also be provided. Here, these include an entry forecourt for cars and pedestrians and a service courtyard hidden out of the way. All of these spaces were considered and designed as part of the holistic house design to enrich the residents, allowing them to fully enjoy our temperate climate.

them, I’d dutifully attended lectures on bird and butterfly life whilst on the expedition boat. Little was I to know that I’d see only a handful of birds and no butterflies. The most common animals were the cows and horses grazing the land that had once been jungle. All of this faded into the background, however, when we were gifted with numerous viewings up fairly close to the pink river dolphins found only in the waters of the Amazon River. These beautiful and unique creatures are in imminent danger due to droughts and numerous other environmental factors, so I’m deeply grateful to have seen them. I mention all of this not to offer a reminder that the world’s climates are changing, waters are warming, ice shelves are melting (going to the Antarctic showed me that), and entire species are disappearing or on the verge of extinction, but to remind myself to live in the moment whilst caring for the future. We live in a beautiful country. We have a small population by world standards, and we can all make little or big choices to help our planet. To ensure that our native species, particularly our native birds, flourish and that when people come to our shores, their expectations aren’t just met, they’re exceeded. So, I’m determined to do whatever I can to both assist this process and support our very own Mother Nature in the hope that others will too. And now it’s time to take care as we all rush to the end of this full-on and sometimes crazy year. Christmas is coming, and I’m hoping for a kinder, greener world ahead.
imagine that most of us live with a sense of expectation, and I’m certainly no different, especially when it comes to travel. Over the past 11 months, I’ve made trips to Argentina on our way to the Antarctic, South Africa to take part in a safari and, in October, to the Amazon. Essentially, it’s fulfilled numerous bucket list dreams and a deep desire to see some of the incredible natural bird and animal species that inhabit our world. Prior to going, I’d only dreamt of what I’d encounter, and Antarctica and South Africa were very close to what I would have envisaged. Wildlife in abundance, animals that I’d previously seen only in books or zoos, and, despite the obvious fingerprints of mankind’s involvement and influence plus the increasing effects of global warming, it felt both heartening and hopeful for the future. Not so the Amazon. This amazing region, including its enormous rainforests and the Amazon River – said to be the world’s largest next to the Nile – is changing exponentially. Visiting on an expedition boat, accompanied by experts who had been brought up in the region, gave us valuable insight into the many changes that are occurring. Record droughts, obviously low – extremely low – water levels, numerous wildfires, a state of emergency in one of the cities we went to, large areas of deforestation, and no animals unique to the area to be seen. In my rather naive way, I’d expected to see at least some of the 2,000 bird and mammal species I’d learnt of. In preparation and, yes, the expectation of seeing many of

e are so lucky in Aotearoa to have many delicious, locally-produced beverages. From my favourite bitter orange aperitif to the wine department, where Pét Nats, orange wine, and chilled reds are taking over. Many are made by exciting young winemakers from the Eat New Zealand Kaitaki – a collective of next-generation food leaders who are telling stories of place through their wine. Let’s start with L’Opera, crafted by Hastings Distillers, this bittersweet orange aperitif is NZ’s version of Campari, but better! It makes a dreamy negroni, or the Instagram-famous Negroni Sbagliato, ‘with prosecco in it’. It can be served long with ice and soda water and comes in a strikingly tall, vintage bottle. For those who made it to Italy this year and are missing aperitivo hour, you can use it in place of Aperol in your spritz too. In the wine world, you’ve likely heard of a Pét Nat (short for Pétillant Naturel). It means ‘naturally bubbling’ and is a return to the old tradition of producing sparkling wine. With its natural yeasts, it ferments in the bottle, creating a unique wine that is often cloudy and offers funky aromatics. It’s different for sure, but I’m a big fan of its bright, bubbly, and unique personality. Both Greystone and Black Estate have a handful of Pét Nat vintages, and every single one has been heavenly – full of fruit, fun, and funk! I’ve heard through the grapevine that young North Canterbury winemaker Will
Bowman from Vita Wines is soon to release a new Pét Nat called ‘Kisses’ encapsulating the sweet, soft taste of summer. Matua Murupaenga (Ngāti Kuri, Ngāti Kahu), a chef based in Tāmaki Makaurau, has just launched Tāwhiti Wines, a natural wine label that incorporates Māoritanga, alongside his partner Imogen Weir. Their first wine is called Awatea (the dawning of a new day), and it’s a glorious Chardonnay Pét Nat made with organic grapes from Te-Matau-aMāui (Hawke’s Bay). Orange or skin-contact wines are an interesting style with a little more oomph. Some love it, some hate it, but the amber or orange hue occurs due to fermenting white grapes with their skins on. It creates more body, higher tannins, and a more exuberant profile than traditional white wine. A rise in chilled reds provides the perfect excuse to drink red throughout the hotter months. Some are blends, like Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris, while others are lighter Pinot Noir. Jannine Rickards from Huntress Wines in the Wairarapa has a flavourful chilled red called Kuratea, that offers juicy red fruits with a savoury depth. Another female winemaker, Ashleigh Barrowman, has just released her beautiful new range, all grown biodynamically from The Wrekin Vineyard in Marlborough. The 2023 Empress Chilled Red is a pale Pinot Noir, described as ‘popping’. It makes the ideal beach or BBQ wine that I plan to fervently sip in the sun.

One-stop block It’s time for summer in the city! Our central city has made its mark as a dining, wining, and entertainment destination. Avenues checks out one city block – Colombo, Gloucester, and New Regent Street – to find out what’s hot!

With its signature pastel colour scheme and art deco vibe, gin gin is the place to be this summer. New to the menu are the pizzettas (miniature Neapolitan-style pizzas), with a favourite being the Pizzetta Stracciatella with confit garlic, Wairiri stracciatella, saffron zucchini, and hot sauce. Gin gin has also added lots of new summer dishes, including BBQ’d asparagus and whitefish crudo as lighter options to enjoy during the warmer months. In early November, they also launched a brand new gin with New Zealand artisan gin makers, Elsewhere Gin, called ‘Elsewhere x Gin Gin Premium Gin,’ created using hand-picked botanicals from Christchurch. If that wasn’t enough, jazz fills the street with live music every Friday and Saturday from 9–11pm. From now to February, they also have live music early evening on Sundays.
Odeon, the city’s Andalusian gem, is tucked around the corner on Gloucester Street. Inspired by Mediterranean dining, shared plates of varying sizes transport diners across time and continents. The wine list spotlights passionate producers who respect the land and share compelling stories through their wines. General manager Loren Mitchell Moore is excited about the new season’s dishes, “My current favourite dish is our Surf Clam Crudo with White Asparagus and Macadamia Ajo Blanco. It is incredibly fresh and creative, showcasing what we can grow in Aotearoa but with a lovely coastal Mediterranean influence. I also love the heirloom tomato dish with stracciatella. It has been so thoughtfully put together and really lets the purity of the ingredients shine through.” As summer arrives, Odeon introduces aperitivo hour in the bodega – an opportunity for people to gather for cocktails, mocktails, or wine with shared snacks. Rare and unique bottles will be available by the glass for guests, and Odeon is open for a special New Year’s Eve celebration featuring a curated menu by chef Jack Burgess.

A MODERN CLASSIC In Colombo Street’s historic Isaac House, a pub with a difference has emerged. Opened in October, The Victoria Free House is the latest venture by Christchurch hospitality trailblazer Luke Dawkins. When the city’s Permit Room restaurant was shuttered, Luke jumped at the opportunity to set up shop in the 1927 building, which evoked memories of pubs back home in the UK. A recent trip to the UK where he revisited pubs he grew up around further inspired him. “I came from a background of living and working in pubs from an early age and have always been fond of maybe opening one.” Luke was helped in realising his vision with a menu that has been spearheaded by executive chef Shafeeq Ismail, known for Odeon and Story. It features classic pub grub in an elevated style. Think Scotch egg with Gentleman’s Relish, chips and curry sauce, and fresh daily fish and chips. In the new year, another British classic will join the menu – Sunday roast dinners. The modernised British-style menu is complemented by the space’s design. The Vic, as it’s known colloquially, is a modern take on a traditional English-style pub with a worn-in, relaxed, and modern feel. It has a bar offering alongside a second-storey restaurant. Luke says, “It’s a place to meet friends and family and to bring them all along for a catch-up and a pint and a chat! The Vic is not focused on sports but rather on good food and beer offerings. You can come for snacks and drinks or dine in the upstairs restaurant.” The pub is named for Queen Victoria in the adjacent Victoria Square. “Given its location, it was pretty hard not to give the pub a bit of a classic name. Pubs are also traditionally named after royals or a coat of arms. The ‘Free House’ component refers to not being tied to a brewery and therefore having the freedom to choose any desired beers to offer the guests.” 779 Colombo Street, thevictoriafreehouse.co.nz

No need to travel back in time and soak fruit! These Christchurch foodies have dessert sorted with fruit-forward sweets to devour after the obligatory glazed ham this Christmas. Here are some of my picks for a spiced and fruit-forward dessert honouring tradition without the need to turn the oven on. Merry Christmas from our families to yours!

From pudding to fruit cake, mince tarts to truffles, traditional Christmas desserts are sorted at Pōhutukawa Pantry. Baked in Christchurch and packed in eye-catching bright red boxes, these guys fulfil your Christmas wishes for fruit-laden sweets. With recipes dating back four generations, the cakes are moist and loaded with a bespoke spice mix, then topped with the foodie jewels of glacé cherries and scorched almonds. One taste, and I was instantly 10 years old in the backyard eating my nana’s hot steamed pudding (with a wedge of pavlova on the side). You can’t beat tradition when it comes to Christmas; this offering will surely bring on the nostalgia we crave at this time of year. You’ll find these red-boxed puds and cakes all over Christchurch, including Ballantynes, but head to their website for more info before they sell out!
Sophie from Full Time Tart is back for another year with her incredible Christmas cake offering. Packed to the brim with dried fruit that has been soaking (drowning) in rum since August, these perfectly sized cakes are inspired by Caribbean black cake, making it the fudgiest festive dessert. The spiced dense cake is mouthfuls of Christmas nostalgia. Topped with brandy buttercream and maraschino cherries, Soph knows how to tiptoe the balance between tradition and innovation. Her Christmas pop-up will be at Addy and Lou (12 Battersea Street) on 10 December so that you can cake and present shop all at the same time and meet the lady herself! Head to her Instagram for updates, and here’s hoping you can be patient and not eat it until Christmas!
Created by Gina Park, owner of bespoke patisserie Pebbles in Riccarton, this wreathshaped black forest mousse cake will steal the show this Christmas. Cutting into the wreath, you will find an oozing cherry compote, rich dark chocolate mousse, black griotte glaze, and white chocolate whipped ganache. The wreath will serve eight to 12 guests (depending on how much turkey has been eaten) and is served cold or frozen if the weather is creeping into the 30s (hello, summer). Park has returned to our city after spending years working in fashion magazines – including Paris Vogue. Since her return, she’s made a U-turn in her career and has spent the last years finessing her pastry skills. As well as her base in Riccarton, she features at Christchurch Farmers’ Market, but you can also order online and pick up.

PILGRIM PANFORTE 1/81 Lichfield Street @pilgrim_nz Pilgrim Panforte is the ultimate finish to your hot Kiwi Christmas. A traditional Italian Christmas cake sliced cold and best served with dessert wine. Pilgrim pushes the expectations for these wheels with their four flavours. The Traditional comprises fig, almond, and walnut. The Chocolate is spiked with hazelnut and cranberry, and the two blondie options push panforte barriers. The Oat melds cinnamon and ginger, and the Kiwiana is filled with dried kiwifruit, strawberry, and cashew (think pavlova meets slice). I’d recommend one of each, and you’re sure to suit all your guests’ tastes this Chrissy. These wheels of wonder are made here in Christchurch at Pilgrim café on Lichfield Street in the central city. While you’re there, grab a coffee and maybe a few ‘Sammy bags’ for stocking fillers – these reusable paper bags are the next ‘Keep cup’.

Fig summer salad This salad by Fig Restaurant chef Mark McCracken is made with dates, but with summer fruits in season, you can also use figs. As the figs won’t be as sweet as dates, you can drizzle a little honey over the salad. Zhoug is pronounced ‘zoog’ and is a traditional sauce from Yemen. You can serve the salad with some lovely fresh baguette and olive oil to turn it into a light lunch or even serve alongside some BBQ fish on a warm summer’s night. SERVES 4
160g ricotta cheese 4 Medjool dates, pitted, or fresh figs 4 mandarins 100g rocket lettuce Fresh As freeze-dried mandarin pieces 80g smoked nuts Edible flowers Zhoug 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 small bunch of coriander, finely chopped 1 tsp cumin seed, toasted and crushed 50ml apple cider vinegar 100ml olive oil Pinch of Aleppo chilli flakes Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cut the dates or figs into quarters. Peel and segment the mandarins, remove pith, and cut in half. To make the zhoug, mix all the ingredients together. If you want a smooth sauce, you can blend in a machine. Zhoug can be stored in the fridge but is best used at room temperature; remove it from the fridge an hour before you use it. To serve, spoon or pipe the ricotta onto plates, scatter the fruit, nuts and rocket around the ricotta. Drizzle the zhoug over the salad and finish with some edible flowers. Use the best ricotta cheese you can find; they have different flavours and will impact the final dish. figrestaurant.co.nz 54
SERVES A PARTY!
Prep 20 minutes | Cooking 2 hours 1 Peter Timbs whole smoked ham leg 1 cup (250ml) ginger beer 1 (400g) can of peaches in juice 2/3 cup (160g) firmly packed brown sugar ¼ cup (60ml) white wine vinegar 1 tsp each ground allspice and sumac ½ tsp each ground cloves, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper 3 bay leaves Whole cloves to stud ham Herbs to decorate hock To make the glaze, place ginger beer, canned peaches (including juice), sugar, vinegar, and ground spices in a saucepan. Use a stick blender to blitz until smooth. Add bay leaves and place over high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar, then reduce heat slightly and cook for a further 10–15 minutes or until reduced by half. Set aside to cool slightly. Remove all plastic from the ham and add any residual juices from the packaging to the prepared glaze. Using a small sharp knife, cut around ham shank, then carefully run a knife under the skin, around the edge of the ham. Using fingertips, separate the fat from the skin and gently peel away, running your fingers between the rind and the fat to lift off skin in one piece. Discard skin. Score the fat of the ham in parallel lines, 2cm apart. Then again, in the opposite direction, to create a grid. Spike corners of cut squares with cloves. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a shallow oven tray with foil and then baking paper. Place ham on prepared tray and pour over prepared glaze. Roast ham, basting with glaze from the roasting pan every 20 minutes for two hours or until caramelised.
Glazed Ham WITH SPICED PEACH AND GINGER BEER Dripping with flavour, dress your Peter Timbs ham properly this Christmas with this sticky spiced glaze!
Wrap the hock of the ham with baking paper and a piece of material and fasten with twine or ribbon. This will make carving easier. Add hard herbs for decoration and spoon over the remaining glaze to serve.

hen Karen and Jason McGrath started Southern Alp Sprouts in 1998, they had no idea that 25 years later their “cottage industry” would be the largest supplier of sprouts in the South Island. A lot has changed since that fledgling business in her garage. Southern Alp Sprouts is now based in a state-of-the-art facility on the family’s Yaldhurst farm, where they produce sprouts ranging from mung bean to broccoli, snow pea to alfalfa. This factory is a point of pride for them both, with Karen saying this is the culmination of a lot of hard work and “very few days off” and them working as a team. “I couldn’t have done this without Jason, he is the backbone of the business’s development.” Despite the growth and success of the business, what keeps them passionate is the swathes of research pointing towards sprouts as a superfood with an array of health benefits. “I love them because they are so good for people,” she says with a smile. “Sprouts promote health.” One area of research gets her particularly excited: “I completely revere broccoli sprouts.” Broccoli sprouts contain sulforaphane, which protects cells against inflammation and studies have shown it to slow tumour growth and prevent benign carcinogens from becoming active ones. Other sprouts they grow, such as radish and alfalfa, have similarly beneficial concentrated natural phytochemicals. All sprouts serve to protect against a variety of diseases. Sprouts being functional food with such high nutritional value is even more important to the pair now amid the cost of living crisis. “They’re affordable nutrition. You only need a little bit, and they are all so important for the structure of your well-being.” Karen, Jason, and family plan to celebrate with their “awesome team”, with Karen saying: “Cheers to 25 years of eating good quality, nutritious food for a good quality of life.” southernalpsprouts.co.nz

Perfect for the summer holidays, Ataahua Riesling is equally at home with canapés or as an aperitif. Sam Kim says of 2017’s: “Gorgeously complex and enticing, the bouquet shows grilled apricot, orange peel, honey and warm spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate offering creamy texture and elegant sweetness, well countered by bright acidity. Delectably expressed and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2027. Order a three or six-pack now for Christmas.

Tama nui te rā - balance in all things
Chelita Kahutianui o-te-Rangi Zainey, Waitaha/Ngāpuhi/Ngāti Kahu/Ngāti Haua Chelita is a māmā, writer, Kai Rongoā, spiritual mentor, and certified breathwork facilitator. Her passion activates and inspires others to heal and transform their lives into one of aligned purpose, love, and joy.
I
’ve had the good fortune to be basking in a fair bit of Rā energy over the last few months, courtesy of the Aussie sunshine. It’s 6am here on Kabi Kabi country, and already 18°C. It’s going to be a warm day blessed with a fair bit of sun and inevitable heat. As I sit and meditate with the morning sun breaking through the banana tree leaves, I smile at the memories of raumati or summer. A flood of blissful, sensory memories envelops me, many of which revolve around long summers spent at my grandparents’, devouring delicious food and immersing in the simple joys of playing in nature. Day after day, we would scramble down the hill to the beach to swim, dig out crabs from under the rocks, get bitten by lord knows how many sandflies, and then gently, over the holidays, our sun-kissed skin would turn a caramelised brown – no sunblock back in those days! Our daily adventures would only be interrupted by the clanging of my grandmother’s dinner bell, which would be rung for morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. We were lovingly fed at every opportunity and would then race back off after each meal to the beach or bush. Memories of sun and kai always seem to go hand in hand, perhaps because raumati intertwines itself with Christmas and the inevitable feasting or perhaps because of the bountiful produce – cherries, berries, apricots,
nectarines, and peaches spring to mind – all of the good things that stir the taste buds and the puku. In Te Ao Māori, the Rā or Sun is personified as Tama-nui-te-rā – the “great son of the sun”, and it is interesting to note how the Rā energy and connection permeates throughout many cultures and timelines, including into Egypt. The purakau or story goes that Tama-nuite-rā has two wives, Hineraumati, the summer maiden and Hinetakurua, the winter maiden. In the cyclic unfolding of a year, Tama-nui-terā divides his time evenly between the two, marking the transition and balance between the seasons. ‘Balance in all things’ and ‘too much of a good thing’ are often spun catchphrases, and as we begin to emerge from the coldness of takurua into the warm embrace of raumati with all its festivities and fun, it’s good to keep the matter of balance in one’s mind’s eye. Just like Tama-nui-te-rā, it’s a good idea to keep oneself in balance and harmony with the natural lore and progression of things. As you merge into Raumati with all of its joys, be sure to temper yourself with some solitude, selfcare, and introspection. “Kia hora te marino, kia whakapapa pounamu te moana, kia tere te kārohirohi i mua i tō huarahi.” May peace be widespread, may the sea glisten like greenstone, and may the shimmer of light guide you on your way.

tautahi’s summers are a season I eagerly anticipate but with a caveat. I no longer expect long, hot days and balmy evenings or consistent weather until well beyond the new year. If I ever have the opportunity to travel in Aotearoa, I always, always pick a time closer to autumn, especially if I intend to head north towards the Tasman region. While the odd night can get quite chilly, the warm, calm days and lack of crowds allow a more reliable chance of an enjoyable break. Christmas Day conditions in Christchurch are so erratic that the temperature can range from scorching and sunny to cold, windy or drizzly, to the extent that I would never plan an outdoor event around December or even January. When I lived in Takaka, it was a running joke that all the ‘townies’ rushing to the touristy beaches on Christmas holidays were more likely to experience extreme climate events than bask in lovely, calm weather. Certainly, some of the wettest months have hit during the festive season, with particularly devastating flooding in December 2010 and 2011. Te Waipounamu’s meteorological patterns are far from predictable, but it does seem increasingly obvious that spring is unsettled at best, and summer doesn’t always become consistently pleasant until February, with some of the best conditions stretching into April, which is technically autumn. In fact,
‘autumn’ in Ōtautahi has become my favourite time of year, akin to the memory of the long, delightful summers of my youth. It’s almost as if the seasons have shifted, often fully arriving four to six weeks later than they are supposed to, though spring flowers and blossoms can appear while winter is still in full force, something I have noticed becoming more prevalent in the past decade or so. El Niño and La Niña episodes are likely to complicate climate issues further, but year after year, it becomes more apparent that the summer holiday period rarely coincides with well-favoured, outdoorsy temperatures. Getting flooded out of campgrounds and festivals or shivering at an outdoor wedding isn’t fun. With this in mind, maybe it is time to consider shifting the dates when the population usually takes a break from work or study. It makes sense to take some time off to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s, but perhaps shifting extended public holidays forward a month could allow people to enjoy what can be relatively shortlived comfortable weather conditions. Contemplate a week or more break for everyone during the frequently magnificent, dry, sun-drenched late February to March period, and what that vitamin D-rich interval could do to lift both the morale and health of the people who call our meteorologically volatile island home.

“I’m in my second year of biology. “I’m very into climate activism. So, kind of learning about all of biology and then also having in the back of my mind, ‘Oh, like, there might not be all this biology around’. It’s quite scary. And it’s also de-motivating and motivating at the same time. “I’ve kind of been mulling over whether I should even do next year or if I should, like, drop out and just do climate activism because I feel like that’s a much more urgent thing to be doing. “So, I’m part of a group called Restore Passenger Rail. Basically, our goals are to restore passenger rail and have free public transport. How we do that, we create disruption, like we protest. “It takes up a lot of my time and mental energy. And it feels really good to actually be doing something and to be part of a group that has a goal. And then at the same time, doing my biology courses, and then seeing my lecturers, being like, ‘Oh, yeah, climate change is real. And it’s happening.’ But you know, they’re not really doing that much about it.
“I just saw a poster around uni and went to a talk. And now I give the talks. I don’t like public speaking at all, but I feel like just being with the group has just made me more confident. Like, I sat on the road in Wellington, and I got arrested. And I went to jail. And it was a horrible experience. But, it was like, ‘Wow, I can do this. I can do everything. Anything!’ You know? “I’m just getting my head around how the world works. And how do I fit; what can I do to… make a world like I want to live in it? If that makes sense. “I think I will finish next year. I’ve already done two years, and I might as well do the last one. I do think studying biology has improved my mental health as well. I just notice so much more. I can look at this tree, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I know how that works’. And it’s so cool. “And then, being part of Restore Passenger Rail, I’m just in a community where I feel like I truly belong. Just being around like-minded people is really nice.”
