y proudest achievement over the summer break was my Birkenstock tan. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it’s probably the first time in my humble life that my legs and feet have tanned! This was because I was fortunate enough to tackle a few of those pressing backyard tasks over the break and spend a lot of my time outdoors. Think: painting, weeding and some general haranguing of my chickens. I love that we have our summer months over Christmas. Nothing beats a summer in Ōtautahi. Sure, we could all be sipping cocoa and making snow angels somewhere else in the world, but we choose to be here. And here, is good. Enough of that – because you, dear reader, are reading this in February. We’re well into a new decade, and I hope you’re settling into the twenties with ease. I was fortunate enough to recently host a dear friend, on his return home to New Zealand after a stint working in London. It was wonderful to see our city through fresh eyes – this was his first visit to Christchurch, and he was inspired and enthused with the modern, fresh vibe we had. We dined at Little High and drank cocktails on The Terrace. We listened to live music at Fat Eddies and limed our way down Cashel Mall on the search for gelato. We visited Cunningham House (did you line up for the corpse flower?!) and even spent some time exploring New Brighton. This is a great time to show people what we’ve got, and what is to come! Imagine Christchurch in 2030 – wow. I can’t wait. Me being close to 50 years of age can wait, but that, my friends, is another story.

TATTLETALE SAINTS
Slice of Life is an exhibition about the world-famous Dunedin study, which has followed the lives of 1,000 Kiwi babies born in 1972. Explore the displays at Canterbury Museum to relive the decades of the study and learn about its contributions to New Zealand healthcare and social policy. See how the lives of 1,000 ordinary New Zealanders reflect our changing nation.
Irish musician, singer and songwriter Andy Irvine has been hailed as “a tradition in himself”. After maintaining his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 50-year career, from Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.
On their third release, Dancing Under the Dogwoods, the New Zealand-born and Nashville-based pair offer thoughtful and minimal production with clever yet emotional songwriting. Audiences on the New Zealand tour will be treated to new songs, favourites from the duo’s previous two albums, and Tattletale Saints’ reimagining of country and folk classics.

SKIN SOLUTIONS If safety, experience, and fabulous looking skin is important to you, then you need to visit Dr Brigid Lee and Denise Prosser at The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.
T
he duo have been part of the Christchurch landscape for over fifteen years and have established themselves as the destination for aesthetic excellence. Everyone ages differently and has different needs. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic offers a personalised full face and skin assessment, and together you will decide on the treatments that will offer the best results. For some, it’s skin quality that needs improving: dull, tired skin with large pores, or sun-damage and broken capillaries. Others may notice their face has lost volume and seems to be sagging, causing unwanted folds and jowls and deeper lines. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has a solution for all these issues. The M22 is the gold standard of IPL (intense pulsed light) machines, it shuts down superficial blood vessels (thereby reducing redness) and lifts brown pigments from the skin. Ulthera uses focused ultrasound to tighten the face and neck. It has been FDA approved as a non-invasive face-lift. CoolTech uses cryolipolysis to freeze away stubborn tummy fat and back fat that diet and exercise alone can’t seem to budge. If you have fine lines and loss of firmness of the skin then Intensify (which uses the power of radiofrequency to tighten and tone) leaves the skin looking firmer and brighter. Dr Brigid and Denise are a team with over 35 years’ experience between them in aesthetic medicine. Why would trust your looks with anyone but an expert? skinrejuvenationclinic.co.nz

Pottery Barn pieces are designed not only to look beautiful, but to stand the test of time. Drawers pull smoothly, performance fabrics are easy to clean, and finishes are forgiving, holding up to the daily wear and tear of a Kiwi household. The quality represents true value, because of the many years it can be enjoyed. Alongside the stylish look and feel of the brand, is a strong commitment to sustainability. Did you know Pottery Barn is currently ranked in the Top 10 global companies using organic cotton and responsibly sourced wood? They have an aim to be 100 per cent sustainably sourced by 2021. The design team at Pottery Barn understand that happiness at home starts with the little things – that’s why they pay so much attention to them. Button tufting on a sofa, contrast piping on a pillow, a cleverly hidden outlet in a bookshelf – passion, quality, and comfort are infused into every one of their products. It doesn’t matter if you’re a home styling enthusiast, with plenty of ideas and extensive Pinterest boards, or you are nervously putting together your dream home – Ballantynes can help you. The homewares team love to talk home styling, it’s their speciality! They’ve got the experience to back it up. Whether it’s a house you need to furnish, or a simple update to your bedding, or floor rugs, to planning a table lay – Ballantynes, along with Pottery Barn, both have the know-how to make your house distinctively yours.
ottery Barn emerged from New York in 1949, originally selling pottery and homewares. Fast forward to present day and the brand is well-loved and trusted, worldwide. Ballantynes is proud to be the sole New Zealand stockist – not only for Pottery Barn but Pottery Barn Kids and sister brand West Elm. The overall aesthetic from Pottery Barn means there are plenty of opportunities to incorporate your own treasured pieces. From rustic dark wood farmhouse tables to lush rugs, modern tableware, and exciting lighting designs. You get a calm, contemporary space that is texturally interesting, but not one that is prescriptive. It’s your house, with your vibe. We all know house trends come and go but creating a space you love is all about developing your own style. The Ballantynes team curated a range exclusively for New Zealand homes, so you can add some Pottery Barn magic to your abode. 2020’s evolving looks include Rustic Modern, European Chateau, and the return of the bar cart. Grounded in neutrals, the Rustic Modern look layers rich textures with reclaimed woods. Play around and add different metals – wrought iron, galvanised metals, and pops of brass for contrast. European Chateau is inspired by nature and contrasted with warm gold and cool tones, this look is cosy and soulful. Two, it’s the number of me and you. As homage to Valentine’s Day, this month Avenues celebrates duos who bring a little bit of light to the world through friendship, partnership, and love. Sweet Soul Patisserie founding sisters, Rea and Taina have transplanted the fine sweet treats of Parisian boulevards into our central city; we take a step into Rochelle and Kahanui’s wedding day at a refurbished heritage building – The Little Chapel; and inseparable best friends Kendal and Georgia have a few tales to tell about the meaning of true friendship.

isters Rea and Taina Scur have created something wonderful with a boutique patisserie, and it’s nothing short of a decadent experience. A short step off Cashel Mall, through the Guthrey Centre, you’ll find Sweet Soul. Specialising in fine Parisian style desserts, the aim is to offer the best possible taste, experience and aesthetic that you would find on the cobbled back streets of Paris – which Sweet Soul does effortlessly. Fresh desserts are created daily, with flavours like cherry blossom, matcha, and warm spiced apple. You’ll be back for more and more. The Scur sisters grew up in Brazil. Taina arrived in New Zealand over a decade ago, while on holiday from her university studies. As with so many other visitors, she was captivated by Aotearoa, put her studies on hold, and decided to stay longer. “It was only ever supposed to be for six months, and so far, it’s been twelve years! The entrepreneurship bug took over from my passion for business law and lead me to opening Sweet Soul with Rea.” Younger sister Rea says their “family’s European roots was part of the reason I fell in love with French patisserie and began my French patisserie training. Fine patisserie is an art of concentration and precision, from the beginning of the recipe until the end of the decoration. As you can imagine, there is a lot of patience involved.” The sister’s strong bond is apparent – this helps the duo run the business together. Rea states that from their initial conception of
the Sweet Soul brand they “knew that our different work experience and backgrounds would add to the business but being sisters, we felt comfortable expressing our opinions in a straightforward manner”. The pair play off each other’s talents – with Rea managing the kitchen and staff, and Taina on the front line working with customers. Taina mused on this dynamic. “Some of Rea’s strengths, are my weaknesses, and vice versa; but this gives us the balance,” she said. The sisters ensure the team has a holistic approach to the pastries offered. “When working on new concepts for our desserts, the most important thing is the approval of the whole team – their opinion is extremely valuable to us, as we all need to be proud of every product made here” The team celebrate Chinese New Year, Christchurch Pride, Matariki, and more, with a limited run of themed desserts. There’s a connection to our city through their art, and it’s appetising. “We couldn’t be more happy and grateful for Christchurch, and how Sweet Soul has been received. You made the previous two years so amazing, and we’re approaching 2020 with such excitement. It will be full of new and exotic flavours, combinations, textures, and techniques. We will surprise your paladar with remarkable experiences. “Everyone is always enthusiastic for our new desserts, and even personally bring ideas to the team. So far it’s been such a fantastic connection.”

BIG ON LOVE AT THE LITTLE CHAPEL WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTOS Joseph O’Sullivan
T
he Little Chapel is more than a church – it’s home to a social enterprise that quite literally changes lives in the most perfect way. An offshoot of non-profit The Home & Family Society, all profits generated by weddings and functions at The Little Chapel go directly towards funding their services. They’re dedicated to helping Christchurch children and families. The Little Chapel opened its doors in March last year, with a dream of creating beautiful, bespoke weddings. It’s a place for the public to use and enjoy a stunning heritage hidden gem, all the while enabling Home & Family to continue to deliver their essential services to our community. The chapel was built in the late 19th century and was designed by the renowned architect Benjamin Mountfort, who was one of the country’s most prominent architects. He was the first official Provincial Architect in the development of the Canterbury region, and was responsible for many notable buildings including Canterbury Museum and The Canterbury Provincial Chambers. The chapel features a wooden altar, sculpted by Frederick Gurnsey, who carved the Bridge of Remembrance, and stained-glass windows by Veronica Whall. The chapel is now nondenominational – which means they welcome civil unions. In fact, you can personalise your ceremony to your heart’s content. Recently at The Little Chapel, a very special union took place, thanks to The Little Chapel’s Claire Quinn, and a promotion with a local radio station. Rochelle and Kahanui’s story started in the early 2000s – Rochelle mentions the pair bonded in an unlikely scenario – at the infamous Holy Grail pub.
“We bonded over our mutual love of Bon Jovi, on the dancefloor, one night in 2004. I was 24 and he was 23.” After a full circle journey, including another marriage, a move to Australia and more, the couple have been back together for five and a half years, which includes the birth of their son. “When Kahanui proposed in February last year, it was a massive surprise to me, and all our family and friends. They’ve always believed we should be together.” The blended family includes Imogen, 19 and Diezel, 14 – completed with two-year-old German Shepherd, Kubo. “A good friend of mine, Julia, was helping me with all the wedding planning, as it was stressing me out a little. She tagged me in The Breeze Canterbury’s post on Facebook, so I entered the competition via text and told our story; how we had been together when we were younger, then parted ways. After a separation, and my move to Australia, Kahanui came and spent some time with us in Brisbane. We had a great time, and it helped reignite our old flame, so to speak. So here we are, 14 years later.” The wedding was a good old-fashioned Kiwi working-bee – with several local businesses on board to make the day as wonderful as possible. Everything from beauty, the dresses, the cake and even luxury accommodation was provided by local business for the duo. “The whole day was a highlight, in my opinion. Everyone who was a part of the competition contributed to making our wedding absolutely amazing. The day was beautiful, from start to finish” The Little Chapel has won over these hearts, and in the process, helped our community. A wonderful initiative that means the best day of your life, can help to make someone else’s life better.

ME AND MY BEST FRIEND AS TOLD TO Kim Newth PHOTOS Joshua Brosnahan
O
n a summer’s day in the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch girls Kendal and Georgia take a pause in their game of tag and tree climbing adventures to explain the essence of friendship…
In the holidays, we both went to the Sounds with our families and met at Lochmara Bay. I went in a kayak and we had a barbecue together and went swimming. Kendal: I went on a paddle board … When I stood up in the water it was up to my hips. I kept pranking Georgia that there was a sting ray in the water! She knew I wasn’t serious though. I turned 7 in October and she got me an LOL [doll] in a basket. We play with each other’s LOLs a lot. I like it when she gives me presents and when I give her presents. We had this BFF necklace that broke when I was trying to put it on but now we’ve got a new one. It’s a fairy necklace in two halves for each of us.
Kendal: When I first started school and met Georgia, I thought she was going to be a good friend. She looked really nice. We became friends from day one and were in the same class at school, and we’re still going to be in the same class in Year 3. We sit together in class and spend interval and lunch together. When I’m sad she’ll say, ‘hey Kendal, don’t be sad – let’s go and play’! We both love chocolate ice cream with sprinkles and everything, and we like the same colours – pink, gold, purple and blue.
Georgia: Sometimes she comes to my place to play with my LOLs and sometimes I go to her place to play with her LOLs. I’m turning seven soon and we’re going to a flower place to make headbands. It is so much fun when we go on play dates. Me and Kendal went to [Taiora] QEII and went on the hydro-slide. I thought I was going to fall off!
Georgia: Our favourite animals are horses, dogs and koalas. Kendal: … and unicorns! Every girl likes unicorns! Georgia: Kendal is kind and she makes me laugh. When I’m upset she makes it all right. We play tag, and hide and seek and have our favourite places. If it’s raining outside then we’ll do dress-ups or play with our Barbies or Polly Pockets. We often write each other a card; I write one to her and she then gives one to me. Or sometimes Kendal writes me one and then I write back. We draw bubbles and things in them and write, ‘you’re my BFF’.
Kendal: I thought everyone was going to come down on top of me. Georgia: I want us to be friends when we’re grandmothers. Kendal: I want us to stay friends for 10,000 years. Georgia: Best Friends Forever!

Creativity at the heart of the city
T
he Central Art Gallery is now three years old. A vision born of five local stakeholder families to offer exhibition and selling opportunities to contemporary New Zealand artists in central Christchurch, post-quake. Solo exhibitions by Neil Dawson, Bing Dawe, Elizabeth Thomson, and Simon Edwards have been punctuated by themed group shows like Glimpse Panorama (landscape) and One Moment Please (still life in contemporary New Zealand art). There have been new work shows which include artists rarely seen in Christchurch, like Ann Robinson, Veronica Herber, Martin Poppelwell, and Stanley Palmer. Fiona Van Oyen and Kirstin Carlin have shown an array of organic forms. Dick Frizzell has stolen the floor, and Reuben Paterson’s glitter works dazzled visitors through December and January just passed. The gallery also offers space to browse stock on accessible sliding steel racks. Whilst print drawers offer a large variety of works on paper by gallery artists. These are easily viewed on an iPad that catalogues and displays every available work. The Central is a flexible space
(with mobile walls offering intimate moments and a sense of enclosure within something much bigger). Flooded with graceful natural light and the warmth of old timbers and stone, the Old Library Building from pre-Arts Centre days has come back alive. Now, under the stewardship of gallerists Jonathan Smart and Laura Gobbe, a wonderful variety of contemporary work continues to be offered in the city. Emma Camden’s sculptural cast glass currently glows in the generous window bays, Karl Maughan’s layered brushwork and vivid palette will tantalise in March, and Hannah Kidd will explore the mixed blessings of inheritance in a lavish show of sculpture come May. The Central Art Gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome to come down and peruse their collection of work. Two new precincts for the CBD

ne-third of the vacant, undeveloped private land in Christchurch’s CBD east of the Ōtākaro/Avon River is set to be transformed by the new ‘North of the Square’ development. The half-billion-dollar development comprises a hotel precinct around the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and a new Catholic precinct in the block bordered by Colombo, Armagh and Manchester Streets. A collaboration between the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, the Carter Group and Ōtākaro Limited, ‘North of the Square’ is a great outcome for the city, according to Ōtākaro Chief Executive John Bridgman. “Up to four hotels will be built on the Te Pae site, through our development agreement with Carter Group, and that includes a fivestar hotel that is due to be completed by April 2023,” Mr Bridgman says. “Having a five-star hotel near Te Pae is a requirement for many significant international events, so this broadens Te Pae’s appeal in the globally competitive event market. “This is good for our city as business event attendees typically spend twice as much as leisure tourists. Once Te Pae is in full swing, our visitors are likely to inject almost $100m into the local economy each year, according to ChristchurchNZ.
“Importantly, most business events are held from March to November, outside of our big summer visitor peak.” Te Pae will host an array of local, national and international events when the doors open in October. This includes the national College of Midwives conference and a 1000-delegate international wetlands conference, while a Grand Ford Mustang Show – featuring more than $16m worth of classic and modern muscle cars – is sure to attract local car enthusiasts through the doors. A Crown company, Ōtākaro was established with the goal of balancing both commercial and regenerative outcomes for Christchurch. “The ‘North of the Square’ development is a great example of us benefitting the city as it also enables the private land adjoining the City Promenade that we created to be completely revitalised through the Catholic Precinct.” The church precinct will comprise a Cathedral, a pastoral centre/community hub, a primary school for a relocated St Mary’s Primary School, offices for the Catholic Diocese, residential accommodation for clergy, and a multi-storey car park building. ‘North of the Square’ is the largest private, multi-site construction undertaken in the central city post-earthquakes and is the final piece of the jigsaw connecting the Avon River to the performing arts precinct and Cathedral Square.

olvo’s XC40 is the small SUV that’s big on innovation. With expressive design, ingenious storage and smart technology, this SUV is designed for the way you live, now. This is a vehicle at home in the city. Brimming with Scandinavian style and innovation, and created around your needs, its combination of ingenious storage features with smart, easy-to-use technology and useful connectivity features make urban life less complicated. The interior is a versatile space full of storage features that help keep your car clutter-free. The bin under the front centre armrest is large enough to hold a small handbag or a full-size tissue box, for example, and there’s storage space on the tunnel console where a mobile phone can be stowed and wirelessly charged. The XC40 has support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This allows the use of some phone functions on the move via the car’s touch screen, steering wheel controls or through voice control – intuitively and safely. You can even write text messages, make a call, listen to music and use app-based navigation, so there’s no need to pick up your phone while you’re driving. A high seating position and excellent visibility put you in command of the driving experience, while uncluttered design and intuitive technology help reduce distraction. The focal point is a portrait-format touch screen that has bold, clear graphics, and which is so responsive you
can use it wearing gloves. The voice control function understands normal speech, rather than set prompts, making it easy to use on the move. The elevation of the driver’s seat means you have panoramic views of the city roads. Together with agile handling and responsive steering, you always feel in control. Models with intelligent all-wheel drive technology provide extra traction, with minimal increase in fuel consumption or emissions. City Safety, standard on the XC40, is like having a co-pilot looking out for you. It identifies other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals ahead, warning you if a collision is imminent. If you don’t react in time, it will brake automatically to help avoid or mitigate a collision. Lightweight powertrains are the perfect combination of responsive performance, low emissions, and efficient fuel consumption. The basis for each is a turbocharged engine, matched with smooth-shifting manual or automatic transmissions. A range of accessories makes the XC40 even more useful. Load compartment mats help you keep your interior looking smart, while a protective steel grille helps you transport bulky loads safely and securely. For cyclists, there’s a strong, lightweight bicycle holder, and a tow bar that slides out electrically when needed if you need to tow. Volvo has effectively delivered a safe, intuitive SUV that is well-suited to Christchurch’s roadscape. It’s built for city life.

spiring singers, songwriters, and music producers will take their places in the ground floor of the restored Wood’s Mill heritage building in Addington from this month as Sacha Vee’s SOLE Music Academy gets underway there. It marks an exciting stage in the rebirth of the 19th century flour mill as a new creative complex for Christchurch. Owner and structural engineer Michael King had the vision to make something of the old quake-damaged mill. Today, this place oozes sophistication. The vibe is industrial steam-age crossed with New York loft style. “I took this on because I wanted somewhere for the people of Christchurch to unleash their creativity and here you have a building with endless potential,” says Michael, whose consulting firm is on the first floor. International platinum-selling artist Sacha Vee, who launched SOLE Music Academy at The Piano in 2018 to help support and develop Christchurch’s talented singers, songwriters and producers, found Wood’s Mill through word of mouth. She’d long dreamed of finding somewhere with a creative atmosphere to provide a truly out of the box place for music-making. “As soon as I saw this building, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness – this is perfect!’” says Sacha, who used a crowdfunding campaign to help raise the funds needed to complete the fit-out of SOLE’s new space. “It went really well: people want to be involved in supporting the performing arts in Christchurch.” Wood’s Mill is an evolving project that still has months to go. The full plan includes co-
working offices, 15 apartments, seven ground floor boutique restaurants and a central bar. At the time of writing, an outdoor stage had just been completed for summer gigs. The Mill Theatre – formerly the home of Riccarton Players – is also on track for a fit-out as part of the development. “It’s going to be three-levels with flat seating and a stage in front and it will be fully configurable as a venue so it could be used for anything from a TED talk or corporate function through to a full play or rock concert,” Michael says. For Sacha, the prospect of being able to access the adjoining theatre and outdoor stage is hugely exciting. “Having the old Mill Theatre there was a selling point,” she says. “The outdoor stage means we can have mini-festivals out front. These facilities will complement SOLE’s new teaching and music studios really well.” There is no shortage of musical talent in Christchurch. Currently Sacha has around 100 students and has had to employ additional staff to keep up with demand. “I assumed we’d just be working with musicians who wanted a music career, but that’s certainly not the case. We’re finding there are a lot of people of all ages interested in learning how to sing, write songs and produce … also, because we offer day and evening sessions, it suits students who may not be able to commit to a full-time music degree.” Michael is confident the whole building will eventually function as one big vibrant community, with regular concerts and events set to make this a busy year-round venue.

ook around you at any time during the year and you’ll notice couples going about their lives professionally and personally. Although this integration may appear simple, when you’re working together in business there can be a lot at stake. Some people make it look seamless: they’re calm, happy, on the same page, and pushing for shared goals… but have you ever thought about how they actually do it? To be fair, I’ve got no idea how others manage, but what I can do is shine a light on how I’ve been able to work happily with my husband, John, for 24 years in a competitive – at times, combative – industry. It’s not necessarily easy, but I’ve learnt lots of lessons and, to be frank, as a team we have achieved so much more than we could have as individuals. So, here are some of my personal thoughts. I hope they help.
39
Communicate. In business, no-one’s an island. Know what you are doing individually and do it, don’t just talk about doing it. Work to your strengths and offer encouragement. There’s no need to oversee what your partner’s doing. They know what they’re doing and both of you focusing on one thing slows the business, and your momentum, down. John and I have very specific strengths and anything else I outsource or delegate. Keep any home annoyances at home. If something didn’t go well at breakfast or with children, it doesn’t need to come to work with you or be dropped like a bombshell at a meeting. This only creates discomfort for you and anyone else involved. Finally, be grateful. It’s a privilege to work with someone you trust and love. So, there you have it, four of my 400 tips! To my mind, this kind of working relationship can make you formidable in business and happy in life. Enjoy February!

This love of local is supported by weekly foraging escapades. “It’s an important element to Mrs Bottomley’s. We’ve been doing this since Hannah was a child… she was a little embarrassed at her mother’s foraging, with flax stems poking out windows.” Leaving a Mrs Bottomley’s postcard in a letterbox requesting a few branches in return for a seasonal bunch has also proved fruitful – these methods ring true of sustainability and also keep the team connected with the community. It’s refreshing to find a group dedicated to nature and more importantly, people. Their philosophy is simple – to create breathtakingly beautiful, wild and whimsical bouquets, designed with love and care. Liz herself shares the perfect quote by Roald Dahl with those attending her floristry classes. “And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
mongst the seasonal drying blooms and fresh-cut bouquets resides a team of truly wonderful women. Making up a magical woodland at the far end of The Tannery, Mrs Bottomley’s Flowers is a place of whimsy and quirk – set to reflect the very nature of its namesake: matriarch of the business Liz’s maternal grandmother, Millie Eleanor Watkins – aka Millicent Bottomley. Mrs Millicent Bottomley was an author’s dream, Liz says – she read, knitted and listened to The Archers or parliament simultaneously on the wireless each afternoon. Millicent always had at her disposal a 20-pound wooden box of Cox’s orange apples, stored under her bed – and would never turn her nose up at a drop of brandy. This zest for life is transplanted into her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Liz and Hannah who own the florist shop. It’s all about local at Mrs Bottomley’s; the plants and flowers are being sourced from Canterbury and New Zealand producers, with attention paid to the carbon footprint that many florists and flower shops build up by purchasing imported flowers.

sk any gardener, and they’ll tell you tending to plants is good for you. Taking time to connect with nature, relax, destress, and reflect brings untold benefits and combined with the gentle exercise and daily shot of vitamin D that gardening provides, it’s a winning formula. Increasingly, there is evidence that growing plants, and spending time outdoors, can aid with recovery from illness or addiction and improve your physical and mental health. This understanding of the therapeutic benefits of gardens and plants is nothing new. These restorative powers have been employed throughout history to cure ailments and calm the mind. Over centuries, the design of Japanese gardens encouraged meditation and contemplation, and in ancient Egypt, the mentally ill were prescribed walks in the palace gardens by physicians. In nearly every culture, there is evidence of the use of herbs and plants to treat illness and promote health. More recently, in Norway, people with depression are given the opportunity to work on farms; while in Singapore, mental health patients are prescribed gardening duties on hospital grounds to help reduce stress. Wonderfully, we are now seeing gardens make a major comeback. Gardens now feature in the design of most hospitals,

care centres and assisted living complexes, forming a central consideration in the design of the space. Residents and visitors to these facilities are treated to a sensory feast of fresh breezes, fragrant and vibrant greenery, shady spots to sit, walkways, and hidden sculptures – fascinating visitors of all ages. Two exceptional local examples of this are the sensory garden for children at Burwood hospital in Christchurch and the Dyslexia Discovery Exhibition on Worcester Boulevard, both providing an opportunity to explore using smell, touch, and movement. At home, the process of creating a garden brings a bounty of rewards. Picking and eating your homegrown vegetables or admiring a flower bed overflowing with blooms is enormously satisfying, but the process of planning, building, and caring for a garden also creates a unique opportunity that’s therapeutic. The required creativity, spontaneity, and responsibility promote emotional and physical health while encouraging community involvement and social interaction – a kind of magic potion for overall wellbeing. A garden can give the gifts of health and happiness, and these warmer months are the perfect time to set to work planning, planting, and pottering. All that effort and dirt under the fingernails can bring only good.

nduring powers of attorney (EPA) are excellent things! So, what exactly are they? They provide authority to someone you absolutely trust to carry out certain functions for you: to pay the monthly bills, to buy or sell property, or to make investment decisions for example. There are also many other potential uses. Your attorney should know how you want your money and property handled; they should stand in your shoes and do what you would normally do. A different type of EPA allows your attorney to assist in making health decisions for you if you lack the capacity to make those decisions yourself. In this situation, your attorney will be working with your doctor or health professional to create the best course of action. Your attorney should understand how you would want your life handled and be your advocate if necessary. If you are a couple, the obvious choice is to appoint each other as your attorney – it is likely you will know each other’s wishes. It is prudent though to have one or two back up

attorneys as well – these can be adult family members or other trusted people. Completing EPAs means you get to choose the attorneys yourself and appoint those you feel will make the most appropriate decisions on your behalf. Sometimes a person doesn’t get around to completing an EPA. If that person loses capacity, then they cannot sign an EPA nor anything else for that matter. There is a process to fix this, but it is substantially more expensive than simply organising EPAs with a solicitor; it involves an application to the Court for a management order. While EPAs are useful in situations of ill health or accident, they have a pivotal role when a person loses capacity. It means anything can be dealt with promptly and any problems solved. EPAs are also useful if a person is heading overseas and signing authority needs to be left here. So, all in all, completing EPAs is something that should be considered by everyone as a very practical life tool and could save you a whole lot of hassle.

RED DOOR GIN 45%
ECLIPSE
BRASSIERE D’ORVAL
The Red Door gin is produced by the family-owned Benromach distillery on the fringes of the Speyside region in Scotland. Distilled in Peggy, the distillery’s hand-made copper pot gin still, the base spirit is vapour-infused with local botanicals including some that are uniquely Scottish such as rowanberry and sea buckthorn.
Domaine des Pothiers are producers of Gamay Noir in the Cote Roannaise, in the north of the Loire. Eclipse is its stunning Methode Ancestral, also known as ‘Pet Nat’ – a verdant pink with silky berry fruit and crunchy acid and bead. This is a natural wine with a tenacious bubble.
Orval’s Trappist ale is characterised by a fruity, earthy, and slightly acidic bouquet. Its flavours are complex with distinct hoppy bitterness and a long, dry finish. The smell is of lemon peel, tartness, and spicy sourdough. Like all Trappist ales, Orval is sold only to fund the monastery itself and other charitable endeavours.

right, fresh, and friendly. They’re the first impressions you’ll get at newcomer Belle, on New Regent Street. Newly constructed, next to Rollickin’, Belle sits on a curved corner spot. The decidedly deco vibes of the building frame the interior – which is bright, bold and filled with quirky artwork. This place would fit right in, in Berlin. It also fits in right here, in Ōtautahi. Owner and operator Bink Bowler had a hand in bringing the chain of Black and White Coffee Cartel to life; he’s also the man behind the Wellington institution Memphis Belle. Now that Memphis Belle is sadly no longer, we can claim Bink as one of our own. The place was well populated for a midweek brunch date, but this didn’t stop us from having friendly, quick counter service. On order were the beans on toast – a healthy pile of smoky warm beans, with

A quick-pickled red onion, fresh coriander and an egg. Another stellar dish on the menu for our visit was the smashed avocado on toast – slathered on some house-made ciabatta, with a balsamic reduction and a couple of poached eggs, tomatoes, greens and finished off with crispy lotus chips throughout. If you’ve not experienced a lotus chip as of yet, please do! A couple of flat whites rounded off our order, and we settled in to people watch at the bench on the window. The food is nicely seasoned, well-proportioned and generous – and with plenty of classic cabinet options, and a microroastery for coffee beans on-site, you can take away a little bit of Belle home with you. Bink himself says that Belle ‘is a place about good people, good coffee, good food and a whole lotta charm. Our story will be written as the years go by and it will be shaped by the people who come here.’

Chicken burrito bowl Local foodie and photographer Nadia Eves creates healthy recipes that are lovingly presented and photographed like works of art. “These burrito bowls are a twist on the classic burrito. They’re easy to make for a delicious fresh dinner, or perfect to pack for lunches. You can use up any left-over veggies – you can really chuck anything in there! The chicken can be replaced with mince or chickpeas, and feel free to add some black beans – the possibilities are endless.”

Manchester Street gelatiamo.co.nz
High Street utopiaice.co.nz

A mobile gelateria brings back nostalgic memories of neighbourhood ice-cream vans and Gelatiamo’s converted ambulance surely fits the bill. Jan and Lisa have brought true blue Italian gelato to Christchurch, without any artificial aromas, stabilisers or other commonly used additives. We ordered the Amarena Cherry, a swirl of preserved Morello cherries and creamy gelato. A lemon sorbet accompanied this, with an impressive 25 per cent lemon juice. Last ordered was the Fererro Rocher Sundae – chocolate, Nutella and hazelnut gelato, topped with whipped cream, candied hazelnuts, chocolate and caramel sauces and decorated with Ferrero Rocher and chocolate wafer sticks. Whoa. All these options were delicious – the sorbet especially if you lack the constitution for a pile of dairy!
A warm welcome to Utopia Ice on High Street. This was a highly anticipated scoop, as the Sumner branch of Utopia Ice is a firm favourite, and always manages to have a line akin to the latest nightclub on any given sunny day. The great things about Utopia are its range of flavours (black sesame, and salted caramel and popcorn, for example) and the wide range of dietary options which include gluten-free waffles and vegan gelatos. Sadly, during our visit, I felt my gelato was icy and gritty. Not enough to return it, but enough to notice. The flavours were definitely there, the service was pleasant, and their minimal aesthetic is so chic and fun – but perhaps we’ll visit again once they’ve settled into their newest location for a second round.
With a nod to the science behind the icy treats, The Gelato Lab’s décor features a ‘table of elements’ of all their wonderful flavoursome concoctions. A great range of sorbetto and gelato awaits you. We ordered a cardamom, apricot and pistachio gelato, and a double scoop of Speculoos with a plain pistachio gelato. The former was a standout flavour – modern but balanced well. Speculoos was a warm and delicately spiced flavour and would be perfect with some crumble or texture added. We managed a few samples while on-site, including a spiced guava, and rosehip sorbetto, so you’ll be pleased to find plenty of bold combinations to whet your appetite. A special mention of the service too – we were looked after and treated to an experience.

ROLLICKIN’ GELATO
top pick
New Regent Street rollickin.co.nz
Now, we’ve featured our mates at Rollickin’ Gelato in a few issues; is it really biased if they’re just simply that good? It’s worthwhile to note that you’re getting more than gelato in your cone – layers of sponge, hokey pokey, or fruits like mango or kirsch-soaked cherries mean you’re digging through a medley of yum. Try the Gerry Brownie (yes, you read that correctly) – a ridiculously soft, gooey dessert to give you the sugar rush you crave. For those not keen on chocolate, try Pop’s Lemon Pie – a lemon gelato stacked with crumbling butter biscuit and fresh lemon curd. At the time of writing, the passionfruit and pineapple sorbet was piled up and being scooped out with gusto. Rollickin’ do their best to integrate local events and foster a community spirit in the central city. Limited edition flavours are aligned with shows at the Isaac Theatre Royal (Hansel and Gretel gingerbread gelato, anyone?), and their keenly anticipated annual Doggie Day Out supports Christchurch SPCA, and provides scoops of dog-friendly Woof Woof gelato for participating pooches. Yes, sir. Rollickin’ has so many excuses to keep on lickin’.

HUMANS OF ŌTAUTAHI
Ken KAIAPOI
“I was born and bred in Christchurch. When I was twelve, I was groomed and assaulted by a hospital orderly. Back in those days, we had stranger danger – but he wasn’t a stranger. He was nothing to the picture we were brought up [to believe] as kids – a man in an overcoat and a brown paper bag. I got sucked in. “He assaulted me over a period of time, and I turned from a happy-go-lucky cheeky little kid into a nasty, violent boy. I ended up in gangs and abusing alcohol and drugs. In about 1991, when I threatened to kill a man, I realised I needed help. I went to the mental health system and got turned away. “It was then I realised there was nothing for men. In 1995 I found an ad for a male survival group and went along and realised that was a place where I needed to be, that’s where my healing really started. “So, I’ve set up services for male victims of sexual trauma with a peer support model.
Specialists and therapists are great, but I feel the peer support model works. Male survivors supporting males. Men are predominantly seen as perpetrators in a patriarchal system, so speaking out as victims has been difficult. It has been seen as a weakness. I think our vulnerability is our strength. For us, it is about the power of your vulnerability – if you are able to talk about that it will give you the strength to go forward. “My work is not about empire building, it’s about building people. It’s about sitting with men who have experienced violence and finding a way through. They’ve got to find who they are inside. When that trauma has happened to you as a child you don’t know who you are, so you put a brick wall around you. But as you grow up you are capable of lashing out [and] doing huge damage. So, it’s about sitting with the men and talking about the little boy who has got them to where they are now and looking at where they want to go.”
Ken is a finalist in the 2020 Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year Awards. facebook.com/humansofchch
