I

’ve had the pleasure of travelling around much of this country, and this job has taken me to some wonderful places. However, I will say that Christchurch is undeniably the best city in New Zealand. I’m sure there are some who may wrestle with this idea, and the New Zealand inferiority complex may come into play. So, let me present our case. Even five years ago, I believe many Cantabrians weren’t very optimistic about our city. But now things have changed. As the gaps continue to fill, we now have places and spaces that surpass those of other cities. Our green spaces are something we can all be proud of. A well-known New Zealand influencer with 77 thousand followers on TikTok recently praised this place as ‘having it all’ and questioned ‘why more people aren’t obsessed with Christchurch?’. I couldn’t agree more. Yes, there are still challenges, and some parts of our city require attention. Plans have been released, and work is beginning. New Brighton will have a new entrance to the seaside suburb, and work is due to start on a village green and market square. Meanwhile, wetlands are being reinstated in the red zone. What fills my heart the most is the emergence of a new, energetic culture in this city. Creative businesses, groups, and individuals are diversifying our offerings, promoting greater inclusion, and making a concerted effort to bring everyone along for the journey. So, I’m sure I don’t need to convince you any further, but just in case, we’ve titled this month’s magazine ‘City Scene.’ It’s a look at our changing landscape, honouring the heritage of our place, and keeping a firm eye on the future. WATCH THIS SPACE Celebrating Wāhine Toa Artists Kophie Su’a-Hulsbosch and Janine Williams Date September 2023 Location 92 Hereford Street This powerful celebration of the significant achievements of Ōtautahi wāhine toa serves as an inspiration, honouring the past to empower future generations. Made possible by the Hine te Hiringa – Empower Women Utilising FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 fund, the beautiful mural was collaboratively designed by local artist Kophie Su’a-Hulsbosch and Tāmaki Makaurau’s Janine Williams, with Su’a-Hulsbosch painting the work on the large Hereford Street building. The mural depicts a selection of five females, each representing the achievement of significant milestones for wāhine and for having led meaningful change within our communities. Arranged into clusters of whetū (stars) and utilising patiki designs to spotlight each woman’s achievements, the mural honours singer, broadcaster, and champion for Māori culture and language, Airini Nga Roimata Grennell; awardwinning writer and activist in feminism, social justice, and peace movements, Elsie Locke; prominent activist in the fields of Māori welfare and health, Erihapeti Rehu-Murchie; conservationist and leader in Ngāi Tahu, Wharetutu Te Aroha Stirling; and paraplegic Olympic archer, Neroli Fairhall, who won Commonwealth Games gold competing against ablebodied competitors. n the recesses of our memory, 2011 often seems like a time best left behind, shrouded in challenges and adversity. However, amidst the trials and tribulations of that period, a stronger sense of community spirit emerged, leaving an enduring legacy for Christchurch. One remarkable testament to this resilient community spirit is Encraftment Market. Born from the chaos of the post-earthquake era when retail spaces were scarce and traditional creative venues like the Arts Centre remained shuttered, Encraftment Market provided a much-needed platform for local artisans and creatives. Held twice a year, the next one on our calendars is the Christmas Encraftment Market. This seasonal extravaganza boasts over 120 stalls, each brimming with handcrafted Christmas gift items. Bring your Santa lists! Visitors to this month’s market can anticipate a diverse array of high-quality handcrafted products. The offerings span from jewellery and artwork to homewares, kitchen spices, artisanal foodstuffs, toys,

clothing for both adults and children, natural health and beauty products, hand-poured candles, outdoor goods, and much more. Made by the hands of local artisans, these are built-to-last gifts that also help sustain and strengthen the local economy. MEDITERRANEAN TERRACE WORDS Liam Stretch

C

anterbury restauranteurs David and Jennifer Warring’s latest venture continues a legacy of quality. Now open on level one of The Terrace, overlooking the Avon River, their new restaurant and bar, ROCA, is inspired by the Mediterranean. “ROCA is Spanish for ‘rock’ and references the main feature of the space, which is a large Italian marble island bar and an open woodfire kitchen where we offer countertop dining and late-night cocktails,” David says. The husband-and-wife team developed one of the city’s most popular spots: King of Snake. A hallmark of their spaces is their interiors, creating a sense of luxury, yet still a place where local and international visitors would feel at home – it’s no different at ROCA. “My wife Jen and I worked together on the interiors at King of Snake and ROCA. We really wanted ROCA to be unique and international like you could be anywhere in the world. We wanted a feeling of luxury but also to make it feel welcoming and accessible.” “We didn’t want a fussy dining room, so we have shown some restraint around formality. ROCA is a restaurant designed to be enjoyed by everyone. You’d feel comfortable in a t-shirt and jandals enjoying a cold Peroni on the deck in the afternoon or dressing up for that special occasion. I think we’ve achieved that balance.” While spending a year planning and fitting out the space, David and Jen sourced several of the elements internationally, like some of David’s favourites, “the huge cluster of Tom Dixon pendants over the island bar”. The menu, much like the surroundings, exudes a Mediterranean essence. “It’s inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean, from Spain to the Middle East.

The woodfire grill adds another layer to both the flavours and the dining experience. It’s quite a unique offering.” Alongside an eclectic wine menu of some of the best international and local vino, the menu is designed to share, including Sturia vintage caviar on crisp rice paper and their Mediterranean reinterpretation of Peking Duck – confit duck leg, sour cherry relish, crème fraiche, and piadina wraps that you build the same way. David is proud of the menu, but one dish stands out. “We put a lot of effort into perfecting our sourdough flatbread, matched with the burrata and fennel jam. It’s delicious.” Though being inspired by the flavours from halfway across the globe, local produce was paramount to the success of ROCA and something David has long championed. “New Zealand creates some of the finest produce in the world. I think that’s something to be proud of and something we do everything we can to support. Local means fresh, and local also means less impact on the environment and the opportunity to work with sustainable businesses with the best practices.” After being open for about one month now, David and Jen are thrilled with the restaurant’s feedback and are excited about its further potential. “We’re thrilled with the love we’ve received on the food so far, and I think the chefs are all excited about building on that. We are developing dishes constantly, and we’re working on items that are perfect for that afternoon vino or cocktail. We really want people to feel welcome to drop in for drinks and nibbles.”

GEORGIAN REVIVAL WORDS Kim Newth

C

hristchurch developers Oliver Hickman and Vincent Holloway have made a lasting impact on the look of the city since launching their company in 2019. From settlers’ cottages to colonial homes and Georgian red brick townhouses, Brooksfield has been busy helping to fill a hunger in the local market for classically designed new homes. Shortly to begin construction at a prime Fendalton location on Glandovey Road is their most expensive development to date – Greystones. Working in partnership with distinguished London-based architects Ben Pentreath Ltd, Oliver and Vincent are seeking to restore the spirit of pre-earthquake Fendalton by channelling its Georgian Revival roots to create seven beautiful new homes on an extensive streamside block (3000m²). With steeply pitched rooflines and classical styling, the look of these new homes is strongly reminiscent of Heathcote Helmore’s residential architecture in Christchurch between the wars. Each five-bedroom home is generously sized from 224m² and priced from $2.325 million, with four already sold off the plans to Christchurch buyers. Naturally liveable, all are three-storey and feature a tasteful line-up of colours and specifications. Greystones is named after a grand old home – built in 1926, largely of grey basalt from the Port Hills – that formerly occupied the site. Extensively earthquake-damaged, it was deemed beyond repair. Since acquiring the property last year, Brooksfield has been gradually disassembling it, selling what can be salvaged but keeping the precious grey basalt for re-use. Construction of the seven new homes is due to get underway in February 2024. “Stone walls around the outside and chimneys in three of the houses are all of the same original stone,” observes Vincent, a

former builder, who notes there is a strong appetite in Christchurch for Colonial Georgian Revival architecture. “In a way, we’re just reaching back to a style that was quite popular here in the 1920s and ’30s.” As Oliver observes, most people are instinctively drawn to the mathematicallyderived symmetry and balance that defines Georgian architecture. “I live in a Heathcote Helmore house – Vincent and I realised early on that we could build in that style too,” Oliver says. The original Greystones home was set within award-winning gardens. This has also been respected in the new gardens, designed by renowned landscape architect Robert Watson, where existing shrubs and trees – including a large Copper beech – take a lead role. Yew and beech hedging provide formal definition. Herbaceous borders, streamside planting, cobbled driveways, and private stone paved terraces contribute to the tranquil setting. Both Oliver and Vincent share a background in development and are proud to have one of the UK’s foremost designers of classical architecture working with them on all their developments. Ben Pentreath, who was recently awarded the prestigious Richard H. Friehaus Prize, has completed many royal commissions. “This certainly isn’t ‘mock heritage’– it’s classical design that won’t date,” says Oliver. Vincent adds that while contemporary trends may come and go, Georgian architecture has deep and enduring roots. In early 2024, Brooksfield will also be commencing a new three-storey apartment building on the corner of Worcester Street and Montreal Street, with all seven apartments already sold. Looking ahead, Oliver and Vincent plan to continue responding to strong local demand for single-storey cottages and standalone homes.

EXHIBITS POPPING UP WORDS Liam Stretch

W

hile Canterbury Museum undergoes a $205 million redevelopment over the next five years, the most significant in its century and a half existence, it has had to look elsewhere to house exhibits and keep the people of Ōtautahi Christchurch and visitors alike enthralled. Alongside Ravenscar House and Quake City, they have a pop-up museum just a stone’s throw away from the Rolleston Avenue buildings, housed at CoCA Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki. Open since July, the museum has leased the CoCA building for the duration of its redevelopment. Currently, it’s exhibiting Six Extinctions, featuring the life-sized cast of the largest T-rex skeleton ever found – alongside displays of collection highlights and visitor favourites. The world-renowned Gondwana Studios produced Six Extinctions. After premiering last year at the South Australia Museum in Adelaide, Christchurch visitors can now travel back some 485 million years to a time when complex life lived only in the sea and the first plants appeared on land. The journey continues as time progresses, and the top predators in each geological period begin to appear: Dunkleosteus, a giant armoured fish that terrorised the seas; Inostrancevia, a tiger-sized sabre-toothed beast; Postosuchus, a giant carnivorous reptile, and then the Tyrannosaurus rex. If you’re a scientist at heart, you’ll know there have only been five mass extinctions, so where does the sixth come in? The exhibit then brings us to the modern-day extinction

crisis: climate change – which is the first caused by a single species, humans. In the other half of the gallery space, the challenge for the team was to distil the feel of Canterbury Museum into only 80 objects, considering the 2.3 million items they had on display and in storage at the original site. Museum Director Anthony Wright said the items chosen from the collection were central to the museum’s identity. “We’ve selected for display taonga which represent the breadth and depth of the collection ranging from a group of taxidermied animals through to historic objects from the Antarctic, Mountfort, and Early Settlers galleries. We have beautiful taonga Māori and Pasifika for visitors to see alongside two firm visitor favourites, the horse from The Christchurch Street and Ivan Mauger’s gold bike.” The museum is undergoing redevelopment to ensure its future. With a growing number of visitors every year, significant heritage buildings, and items valued in excess of a billion dollars, the need for a state-of-the-art space has never been more paramount. The new space will have the ability to change out exhibits more often and more easily, display more items, engage with visitors more freely, and improve its local bicultural narrative. With a recent $10 million government funding boost, these all seem set to come to fruition, and it is sure to be a great space for learning and fun for the next 150 years, at least. You’ll find Canterbury Museum at CoCA at 66 Gloucester Street, and Six Extinctions is on till 3 December.

OC Construction, a true family business, was founded by Les O’Connell in 1991. His son, Tom, started as an apprentice under his father’s guidance, and together, they’ve grown the business. Playing to their strengths, Tom handles project acquisition and nurturing client, supplier, and subcontractor relationships until project initiation. After that, capable foremen and a skilled team take charge of the ongoing projects. Les works directly with the foremen, overseeing all projects, ensuring the highest standard of work across all sites and setting a remarkable example with his unwavering work ethic. This family-oriented approach extends to the entire team, which has now grown to eight members. Every year, LOC Construction offers work experience to two students from St Bede’s College in Papanui. Currently, six team members hail from the same college. “For apprentices, it’s all about whether they can work hard. If they have a good work ethic and common sense and are actually committed to wanting to build, they won’t get a better start in the trade.” Specialising in high-end and hilltop architectural homes valued between $1 million and $3 million, LOC Construction has made a name for itself, amassing numerous awards. Most recently, it claimed the Supreme House of the Year award at the Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards for Mid and South Canterbury. The award-winning property is a new build located in Prebbleton. The angular 356m2 property sits perfectly in its semi-rural setting with a combination of Rockcote masonry cladding and LMA

Timber on the exterior. The large floor-toceiling windows flood the space with natural light and take in the views of the extensive property, which the owners landscaped prior to the build. It’s these features and the smaller details that Tom attributes to their success. “There was one ceiling right through the house, and there were no breaks in the ceiling. In any other house, in the bedroom, for example, there would be a separate ceiling but here, the doors go right up with no reveals. Essentially, we had a 400-square-metre ceiling. It had to be millimetre perfect.” The interior offers spacious and luxurious living, with four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and two living rooms on a large lifestyle block. The bespoke Palazzo kitchen, with contrasting black and white tones, exemplifies meticulous attention to detail. The LOC Construction website documents the many beautiful projects they have completed over the years along with the consistent Gold regional and National awards won in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year. Notably, 2023 is the third year of being included in the Top 100 Houses in NZ. Commenting on the key to their continued success, Tom highlights Les’s commitment to delivering top-quality work. “Les doesn’t accept anything less than perfection. He ensures that the team adheres to his high standards, and he’s not afraid to redo things to achieve perfection.” A reputation like theirs has ensured LOC Construction has had a busy few years and is nearly fully booked for 2024. The opportunity for Ōtautahi to evolve in the post-earthquake years has been signified beautifully in the development of projects that update and enhance the visual identity of this city. RM Designs, founded 25 years ago by Bernie O’Fagan, is pleased to have made its mark on the cityscape. The most recent is Hornby Club.

venues visited the team at RM Designs to discuss their largest project to date and the steps that led them to visualise Hornby Club. Rachel Mechen, Laura Goddard, and ‘Office Overlord’ Jodie White are the leadership team behind this award-winning architecture and interior design business. Bealey Lodge, a tourist accommodation facility, was the first post-quake building to utilise mass timber, in particular CLT (cross-laminated timber). There was a steep learning curve involved in working with the material, which came to assist in the construction of many future projects, reflects Rachel, who leads architecture.

Following the success of Bealey Lodge, which won a NZ Timber innovation award, RM and their engineering partner Engco worked alongside Kainga Ora on social housing projects with mass timber. The focus was to construct rapid builds to a higher standard than ever before, expanding into sleek multi-storey apartments with the intention of “trying to do as much as we can offsite, so we can really condense that timeline down onsite,” says Rachel. They also recently completed the development of Peke Waihanga’s (NZ Artificial Limb Service) new facility at Burwood Hospital. “[Peke Waihanga] loved the timber, loved the space. These clients are part of their family;

they are with them from the moment they lose a limb and remain with them all their lives – [they are] wanting to provide a welcoming, nice space at a time of great difficulty,” Jodie states, with a clear love and passion for the project. The team at RM are smitten with this environmentally sustainable wood, which can be carbon-zero. Engineer Julian Addington of ENGCO Consulting Engineers works closely with RM on many projects and elaborates, “Mass timber is one of the cleanest structural options we have at the moment, and Hornby [Club] proves it can also be cost-effective when it’s done right.” Bringing together everything learned from these builds, including the construction of

Papanui Club from scratch (which won a Gold in the 2017 NZ Commercial Projects Awards), the expansion of Hornby Club was completed in 2021, creating a new club for its members and the community-based groups that use it. The main challenge of creating the Hornby Club was the vast scale – around 2,500 square metres of new mass timber building connected to roughly 3,000 square metres of refurbished building. Laura Goddard oversees the creative realm at RM, and this spatial process was hers to solve. Her role included navigating the exterior look of the building and developing the look of the interior spatial layout and best placement of facilities, all the way down to every fitting and finish.


She admires the work and philosophy of architect Alvar Aalto. “Our clients are the ones inhabiting these spaces. There’s no point designing a fabulous-looking property that’s not actually appropriate for the user; a building is not a building unless it’s inhabited. Hornby Club is a pretty special one; obviously, there were challenges along the way, but the end result has spoken for itself. Seeing the families occupy it has been the best thing. We really wanted to break the stereotype of clubs by creating a lot of cubic

height in the main space to make it feel as bright and open as possible.” Jodie says one of the key factors in the project was the relationship she led with Contract Construction, saying that their problem-solving, timeliness, and quality of work were second to none. Hornby Club being awarded a 2023 NZ Commercial Projects Gold Award is recognition of this. Hornby Club has increased its membership and particularly enjoys the company of younger members and families while providing great amenities for community use.

Change is in the air

H

ere we are in this beautiful city of ours, and for me, at the time of writing, a week away from our general election and potentially a moment away from a moving (upwards) market. As a means of providing perspective, I recently read that “the argy-bargy of an election can have a cooling effect on the property market,” but this year looks different. There are changes, both current and potential, at play. Immigration remains a massive influencer for real estate, and three of the main parties have launched immigration policies that will likely result in an increase in the number of people choosing to settle in New Zealand and our own city. If I canvas the consultants we work with, it’s common to have international clients looking at our hometown, influenced by our value for money (given our property prices), our excellent education facilities, especially the universities, and the sense of safety the city provides. It seems if you add these factors together with lowered current property stock levels and loosening borrowing restrictions, you could see an upward price trend. Now, whenever I’ve made claims like this in the past, people treat it as a blanket statement – which it’s not. Properties that have issues – be they locational, structural or financial – as in prices that are unrealistic or inconsistent with their

surroundings will still provide owners with challenges. What isn’t such a challenge at the moment is the use of auction as a sales method. This now mainstream method is starting to resonate again with homeowners. They have leveraged the fact that property numbers are low, and a consequence of this is competitive bidding and some exceptional prices, especially in the price range between $600,000 and $850,000. It’s often said that auction provides a market barometer for price and location, so it’s interesting to look at locations that seem to be standing out. The interest in our hill suburbs – and that includes Cashmere and Huntsbury – is strong, as is anything in the St Albans, Shirley, and Richmond areas, and the school zones will soon call buyers to them. There’s also more enquiry from investors. The last few years have been difficult for some due to changes in tax deductibility and healthy home standards, but a potential change in government and the bright-line test are creating renewed interest, so I’ll watch that space. There you have it: a market capsule from a market expert and someone who loves the city. Soon, we get a chance to collectively celebrate our city’s anniversary, so here’s to getting out and enjoying it. And I will look forward to seeing what the market actually does in the coming weeks.

Cronut, step aside. Choux is having a moment in our Garden City, and I had to be the first to highlight some of the amazing brains behind these cream-filled puffs of pastry genius. These Christchurch patisseries have worked their magic, so join me in enjoying the fruits of their labour.

With a cult following and a line halfway up the street every Saturday for his 10am–12pm window, it’s safe to say Butter, run by choux extraordinaire Corentin Esquenet, is well and truly stealing the hearts of Christchurch foodies. This charming one-day-open-to-thepublic operation (but order online anytime) is setting the bar high for choux with rotating flavours – don’t get me started about his trademarked creation, the Tiramichoux: stuffed with a house-made sponge dosed in Supreme coffee, coffee cream, and topped off with a good dusting of cocoa. But the genius continues with his recent ginger boi creation. Cracklin’ choux bomb filled with a heated ginger-spiked cream diplomat, topped with a ginger white chocolate ganache montée, oat granola, crystalised ginger and golden syrup reduction. It is TO DIE FOR. I’m completely besotted with anything Correntin makes.

Based in Wigram, this French-inspired bakery was one of my first ‘finds’ in Christchurch. An army of highly skilled pastry chefs keeps this venue stocked to the brim with endless options of butter-laden, flavourfilled creations – the Basque cheesecake is magnifique – all made on-site and with flair and expertise. Owner Will Leung recently opened another venture in Brisbane, Australia, called Beurre, which heroes his incredible pastry creations. But I’m here to talk choux. Lebakerman offered two options for choux on my visit. Here, I tried their hazelnut ParisBrest filled with hazelnut cream patisserie and adorned with gold leaf, hazelnut praline, and the pearl sugar commonly found on Swedish scrolls (an innovative addition). It was delicious and the perfect wingman for a coffee! Alternately, they had an Earl Grey version, which I’m sure to try next time!

Sweet Soul, run by sisters Rea and Taina Scur, is the kind of ‘food art gallery’ we need more of. Picture-perfect pastries are lined up in a glass cabinet. The smell of freshly cooked cakes perfumes the air, and for a second, you could be in Paris. Lemon meringue tart (pictured in the back) has always been a weakness for me. Pictured are two choux creations: a Paris-Brest (the round one) and an éclair. The éclair is feather-lite and filled with a creamy chocolate mousse, then dipped in rich dark chocolate and scattered with bitter cocoa nibs to counter the sweetness. The Paris-Brest is piped with a star nozzle to add texture through the intricate lines of the crisp choux, then filled with a green pistachio cream patisserie and studded with a tart raspberry reduction for balance, and finished with pistachio praline. Enjoy this upstairs with a glass of champagne for the full Sweet Soul experience.

TABLEBLOOM Christchurch Farmer’s Market @tablebloomnz Julie, owner and genius behind Tablebloom, is a powerhouse when it comes to both flavour and pastry precision. Found at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market on Saturdays or ordered directly through her website for bespoke dessert creations, she’s got some of the city’s best sweets (her baked cheesecake is a big tick from me). Always rotating flavours, as is her seasonal approach to her cooking, her choux, which I should add is gluten-free, showcases the calibre of skill this well-travelled pastry chef has. When I wrote this article (‘cause I’m sure the flavours may change by the time you read this), Tablebloom was fashioning two choux items: a lemon meringue bomb that oozed out a jammy lemon confit wrapped in a vanillabean cream (it was gone in three mouthfuls) and a passionfruit and mango choux that oozed out a golden lake of passionfruit reduction, topped with edible blooms.

n the Central City’s West End, INATI takes a unique approach to fine dining. Celebrating its sixth year, INATI, meaning ‘to share’ in Te Reo Māori, is led by husbandand-wife Simon and Lisa Levy. Simon, the executive chef, and Lisa, managing business operations, lead a team of 10 passionate hospitality professionals. Simon’s passion for food traces back to his early memories of Covent Garden markets in London. After 15 years of honing his skills in the UK, he and Hawke’s Bay-born Lisa immigrated to New Zealand in 2013. Opening in 2017, INATI is still a young restaurant, though it has made an impact, making it into the Cuisine Good Food Guide’s Top 100 restaurants in New Zealand the year after it opened – no easy feat in your first year. Since then, it has continued to wow diners, winning several awards. This year, INATI was named a finalist in the Best Metropolitan Restaurant category at the Cuisine Good Food Awards. It is also one of three 2-hatted restaurants in the Canterbury region, among a select group of 26 in the country, featured in the Cuisine Good Food Guide 2023/24.

INATI’s culinary philosophy centres on showcasing the best seasonal produce from Canterbury. The menu includes categories like Earth, Land, Sea, Large Plates, and Nectar, available à la carte or as ‘Trust Us’ set menus. At the heart of the restaurant is a chef’s table, providing a view of the kitchen for 19 diners. Conventional table options are also available for a more intimate dining experience. Simon’s classic French training meets culinary innovation on the menu. Highlights include the Boeuf-nut, a braised beef cheekfilled doughnut, and the famous duck trumpets and blackberry jam waffle cones – inspired by Simon and Lisa’s children enjoying ice cream, these creations have been menu staples since the restaurant’s 2017 opening. INATI offers lunch on Fridays, with the addition of Thursday and Saturday lunch services for the remainder of the year. Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday. Reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are welcome when space is available, and there is always room in the lounge for guests to pop in for cocktails and a snack without enjoying the full menu.

King of Snake David Warring (owner of King of Snake restaurant) created the King of Snake cocktail in 2003. The King of Snake is one of New Zealand’s most famous original cocktails and has been published around the world. The recipe requires some preparation and technique, but if you follow these steps carefully, you’ll be amazed at the results.

15ml Grand Marnier 15ml chilli-infused Belvedere vodka (put three fresh chillis in a bottle of Belvedere and leave to infuse for two days – this will keep for months) 30ml Belvedere vodka (not infused) 30ml fresh lemon juice 2 or 3 tsp grated palm sugar 2 or 3 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and sliced Crushed ice

The secret to this cocktail is in the first step. If your King of Snake tastes bad, the problem will be right here. Take the ginger and the palm sugar, add to your Boston Shaker glass and muddle into a paste. It is suggested you use two or three measures of each ingredient; this is because it is more important to create the right colour and texture in your paste rather than follow an exact recipe. Once muddled, your paste should be the colour and consistency of a non-translucent mānuka honey. Add your other ingredients, fill the Boston shaker with ice and shake. Double strain your cocktail over crushed ice into a short rocks glass and garnish with fresh lime, ginger, and chilli. here’s something so memorable about the month of November when Christchurch and Canterbury spring

touch, to move, and to sense our physical place in the world. When we consider the nature of gardening, it’s no wonder we are so engaged in our connection with Rongo, as it stimulates all the senses, especially once the bounties of the garden begin to blossom and we can taste the rewards of all our hard work. It’s also wonderful to pause and consider the sense of calm and peace that imbues itself when we take the time to plant some seeds and watch them grow, and nothing evokes more fun and joy for the senses than if you get children involved in the creation of a māra kai. The therapeutic benefits of gardening could well be attributed to Rongo, and personally, in the past, when I’ve had big issues to process, turning to the garden to dig and release whatever is in my mind or my heart has certainly proven itself to be invaluable. By digging, planting, and growing, this sensory process of bringing a garden to life inevitably brings my inner landscape a sense of peace and improved well-being. As we enter this busy end-of-year season, perhaps take some time to plant a few seeds, connect with the peace of Rongo, get your hands dirty, and breathe in that warm kōanga air – no doubt it will do wonders in calming all the senses.

Kōanga, or the spring season, is also the time when we turn our attention to our māra kai or food gardens. Māori have gardening in their DNA. According to our histories, they brought the reka/sweet kūmara with them on the waka from Hawaiki and seasoned them in various ways so they could grow in the many varying climates, even in the south. Rongomaraeroa is one of the atua or gods we would invoke when we placed our hands, seeds, and intentions in the whenua for the upcoming season. Rongo is also the atua of the kūmara, all cultivated foods, and the atua of peace and the senses. When we invoke Rongo, we invite peace and well-being into our lives through the many senses – to hear (think whakarongo/ to listen), to see, to feel, to taste, to feel, to
