A month to bet on

ovember has a certain air about it, don’t you agree? We’ve long forgotten the frosts and bare trees, and flourishes of florals and lush greenery have taken over. We’re mowing the lawns more often, doing dinner on the deck, and even considering the beach again. Summer is seconds away. It’s a month where we come out of a collective hibernation and start to thaw – and for many here in Canterbury, a significant first stop on the shortcut to summer is Race Day at Riccarton Park. A quintessential Cantabrian event that we all experience at least once in our lives – for some it’s an annual event, with plenty of bubbles, extensive outfit planning, and an eager countdown to the day, while others are just after a quick flirt with the fillies. Either way, it’s an experience unparalleled: the atmosphere, the thrill of the chase, dressing up to the nines. Not to mention winning a bet or three. This year will be my second ever year at the races. In some ways, it’s more important than the first, as I know what to expect, and I’m excited about it! I’ve confessed in the past that I’m not much of a formal dresser (hello, typical Kiwi guy) but last year was an enormous amount of fun. This year, I’m extending the invite to a larger group of friends, wearing a floral suit that really pushes my sartorial boundaries, and preparing myself for a day of fun.

After all, that’s what it’s all about, taking a punt! Take a bet yourself, and see if you can spot me in the crowds.

House of Treasures: Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho celebrates this milestone by displaying iconic and rarely-seen taonga (treasures) from the Museum’s collection. See a brooch made from the beak of the extinct Huia (right), the boots from Edmund Hillary’s Mount Everest ascent, the dress worn by Kate Sheppard on our $10 note and more. These objects tell an extraordinary story of natural and human history, and of Canterbury Museum itself. yclical celebrations have a way of shaping and defining a year. Those events that return annually call for preparation and pomp from the attendees and nothing better represents that in Canterbury than Cup and Show Week. My first dealings with the races as they are known were walking the runways as a model for Portfolio. I was up close and personal with filial fashion and what it meant to each individual to curate the day’s attire with minuscule detail and design. These past few weeks, I have immersed myself into the racing world with benefit dinners, hat sittings, and most importantly, working alongside the newly appointed Riccarton Fashion Coordinator June Youngman. I privately photographed June in my studio where I learnt of her multiple award-winning competition ensembles and that she brings expert and international knowledge to the events. My family attended The Preakness throughout my life, but I was truly honoured for her time in educating me on what racing fashion is truly really about.

WORLD invited Avenues to the preview of Seventh and Figgs’ latest hat collection as a precursor for all that is to come. As far as my hat history goes, I don’t think that I saw my grandmother’s head uncovered outside of the house, ever. She was a staunchly religious fashion aficionado which left her head dually covered. I adopted this and have applied it to my selections for a week of fashion where I will be serving as a judge for The Ladies Day at Riccarton Racecourse. I have selected Christchurch millinery legend Roz Wilmott-Dalton to create a bespoke look to complete my outfit. She too is an awardwinning designer having trained in Europe and living in her native Canterbury where she creates hats for all occasions which are also available for hire. For this month’s couture collection, I have made a selection of pieces that could complement any outfit you have planned for the races: a mix of milliners, men’s fashion, and simple statement pieces to celebrate in style.

he body is a temple, and like all good temples, it deserves spring cleaning. Setting out to dust off the cobwebs with a holistic health approach is husband and wife, and business partners, Bridget and Henrik Prütz. They met in Europe while Bridget was travelling and Henrik, a Swedish native, was studying at Barcelona College of Chiropractic. They’ve now settled in Bridget’s hometown, Christchurch, and established the chiropractic practice Natura – a reflection of the pair’s guiding principles and values; an embodiment of who they are and how they love their life. “Natura offers family holistic healthcare. We have an emphasis on integrating the art, science, and philosophy of Chiropractic. We also support our practice members using the latest non-invasive scanning technology so they can track their progress and understand what’s going on in their nervous system.” As the drivers behind the business, the couple perform different but complementary roles. Henrik is the chiropractor, and Bridget is the creative energy and the ‘behind the scenes’ of Natura. As well as liaising and communicating with practice members, she also works with other holistic healing modalities and facilitates women’s wellness retreats to support the Natura family with an extra layer of support as it’s needed. At the Bealey Avenue studio, the environment of the space is a vital element. “It was our intention to create a space that encourages and supports the parasympathetic nervous system response as soon as you walk in the door.”

The pair hold the belief that the body is connected to the natural world; there is ample capacity for healing if that relationship is restored. “Chiropractic care ‘takes the cuffs off nature’. By restoring the vertebrae to its natural position, you release the flow of nerve impulses. When the nervous system is functioning properly, and the brain and body are communicating it supplies the body with what it needs for wellbeing; it allows the body to heal itself and return to its natural state which is health.” A dysfunction in the nervous system is known as vertebral subluxation. This can result in communication problems between the brain and the body along the spinal cord – the “information highway that oversees the function of every cell, every tissue, every organ, every muscle, every movement”. This can translate to seemingly unrelated health challenges: digestion issues to menstrual problems, respiratory issues to sleep problems. Dr Henrik is trained to locate, analyse, and correct these. Along with like-minded chiropractors in Christchurch, Natura offers a gift culture payment. This means “that our practice members decide what they pay for their adjustments. We have fixed fees for the first two visits, and then we utilise a gift culture system in order to make regular holistic health care more accessible and sustainable”. haking up the glamour stakes at Riccarton Park for this year’s Cup Week is 2020 fashion coordinator June Youngman, who is encouraging a more open field of contestants for the much-anticipated ‘best dressed’ events. For the first time ever, winners will be selected using a Melbourne Cup-style points system that ties judging strictly to the outfit. Points will be awarded on style and originality, grooming, coordination, millinery, and overall look. June hopes the change will prove popular and would love to see real diversity with contestants stepping forward this November. “That is one of the reasons I wanted this job: to make a difference, make women feel comfortable in their own skin,” she says. “No-one will be judging you on your looks or size. It’s all about what you are wearing. We will encourage any outfit, provided it’s day time attire. I’d say give Riccarton Park a go, and you will not be disappointed.” New contestants this year can look forward to a dedicated fashion area with its own hospitality services. There are some great prizes up for grabs, including a ten night travel package with AwayToGo, and a chance to represent the region at Ellerslie in March 2021. June is overseeing all the Cup Week fashion events at Riccarton Park, culminating in Cup Day (14 November) – Fashion in the Field 2020 on the Tea lawn, which will provide a fantastic backdrop for the event. June has been busy in the lead-up, organising judges, designers, models, and photographers, writing rules for judges and contestants and taking registrations. On the day, it’s her job to make sure everything runs smoothly, (and she plans on looking

gorgeous too, wearing something special from Katerina Boutique at The Tannery). Cup Week is practically on a par with Christmas for June and her husband Kent, who eagerly anticipate being trackside every November; it’s an annual tradition that’s become simply unmissable. “For me, it’s all about the fashion; watching everyone all dressed up and having fun. I even pick my horses on how good they look!” It’s all a world away from June’s farm machinery business in North Canterbury, where her usual dress code is gumboots and overalls. She and Kent share a background in construction and built houses all over the country before settling in North Canterbury to be close to Kent’s family. June discovered her taste for fashion through a friend who loved dressing up and going to the races. “She took me to my first race event in 2011 and that’s where it all started.” June has since won many sashes including Best Dressed at Addington and Te Rapa, Purposely Beautiful Award at Riccarton (November 2019, when Kent also won best dressed man), and Supreme Winner in Wellington (January 2020). She picks her own fabric – matching everything with that – and works with select milliners and designers (including North Canterbury designer/ dressmaker Jo Laurenson) to create her outfits. No matter where you sit on the fashion spectrum, June says it’s worth making the effort to dress up for Cup Day and notes that an outfit need not be expensive. “You can get some really cool designer dresses or suits in an op shop. This is a day event, so make sure anything you wear is comfortable, including the shoes!”

AT WATER’S EDGE Every collaboration, whether it’s a marriage, a business proposition, or the building of one’s home is a lesson in thoughtful compromise. Bringing together two distinct visions for a home is no mean feat. Still, architect Richard Dalman has created his own home with a partnership of his love of contemporary designs and minimalist detailing, and his wife Marion’s affection for water and seaside living. This is the Water House.

ituated on the Christchurch Estuary (Ihutai) in Redcliffs, the site of the Water House is ensconced in its coastal position – this is on the main road to Sumner Beach and extends all the way to the water’s edge. In fact, the boundary for the property falls in the water. With the challenge of construction in such a locale presented, the land was fully remediated pre-build with a combination of stone piles and a 300mm concrete slab. From the street, there is a 7.5m narrow frontage. The site angles outwards toward the water to a 14.5m wide boundary. Access to the house was obviously from the road, but Richard

and Marion’s wish to live on the water’s edge meant a long, narrow house was designed to achieve this. The couple wanted a design that would minimise the effects on the estuary, and the neighbours. The clever design allowed the pitched roof planes to be continuous the length of the building. While this is a long house, there are two distinct ‘cut-outs’; one for a service court combined with a third vehicle or small boat park, and the other a generously sized, partially covered courtyard that is a sunny retreat from the prevailing Christchurch easterly wind. A tall urn fountain bubbling 42

under a palm tree enhances the sense of serenity and quiet relaxation in this space. The entrance to the house is to the side via ‘floating’ granite steps. The lobby affords access from both the garage and front entry steps and also leads to a spacious guest suite that can be used by friends and family when they come to stay. Providing passage from one end of the house to another is a long corridor. Along this hallway, the architect has increased the width to form a gallery which provides a journey, with floor to ceiling cedar fins framing tall glass panels, and large glass sliding doors affording different views along

the way. There is even enough room for a sunny afternoon sitting area. At the end of the gallery is an atrium space that turns a corner to reveal 180-degree water views from the open plan living areas. These encompass a generous kitchen, dining and living area with continuous glazing affording floor to ceiling views across the estuary to the South Brighton Spit, Sumner Bar, and the Pacific Ocean beyond. In order to make the most of the iconic setting, one window is the largest double-glazed unit produced in Christchurch for a residence and meets the client’s requirement for an unobstructed water view.

Various other structural elements work to connect the sea with the home; sliding stacker doors open out to the deck that doubles as a pier out over the water. Marion’s love of water meant this needed to be the main focus of the house. This certainly has been achieved. Even in her home office, Richard has carefully framed a view across the courtyard and through the large glass windows of the living area out to the estuary. Despite the water focus, there are still views up to the hills behind from well-placed windows. The atrium space at the end of the gallery also provides access to the master suite via a second set of stairs framed by four-metre-high oak slats.

Heath Waters, General Manager for Clive Barrington Construction, who were responsible for the build, mentions that the stairs are one of the most notable achievements throughout the build process. “From a pure carpentry point of view, the stair balustrade appears to float above the floor and beneath the ceiling with minimal visible connection to the stair. Oak is such wonderful material to work with and the decorative blocking adds to what really is a very clever detail – tricky to execute but well worth the investment in time and planning.” Materials for the house have been carefully selected to provide a seaside aesthetic, such as aqua glass tiles to the bathrooms that shimmer

like pāua shells, grey granite vanity tops with a tidal pattern, and two types of floor tiles that look like a stony beach and a sandy beach respectively. Oak floors, stairs, and joinery complete the light, informal look. Materials are also durable for the seaside location, utilising top quality colour coated aluminium roofing and powder-coated aluminium joinery, high-quality Resene painted vertical cedar boards, and stainless-steel fittings – all are sure to withstand its waterside location, and the changeable conditions that New Zealand is well known for. Landscaping around the house features succulents and Māori Princess Pōhutukawa that are prevalent in the Redcliffs and

Sumner area, which tends to enjoy a warmer winter than Christchurch city. Olive trees create visual privacy along one boundary; their first growing season provided a bumper crop of olives, preserved by Marion and enjoyed by many. While a glass balustrade was obvious for the deck/pier because of its height above the water, Richard and Marion did not wish to have a balustrade to the sea at the lower level. A two-tier seawall was designed and constructed to provide acceptable safety from falling code solutions, with an exposed aggregate face to the water. In a continuation of the symbiotic relationship that the house has with its surroundings, a rocky foreshore

was reestablished in front to encourage sea creatures to find a home. The area is often frequented by herons and kingfishers; shags dive for fish in the water immediately in front, and godwits find their summer home on the sandbanks opposite. Ihutai and the sky are always changing, making living here a delightful experience, and the careful and considered design of the Water House maximises this. Marion feels that living at the Water House is “amazing. I could never have imagined living so close to the water in Christchurch and the clever design making the most of what was a difficult site, means that we can enjoy the everchanging water and birdlife from most areas of the house”. Heath says Richard and Marion’s ability to articulate their vision, taking it from paper to a built form was absolutely invaluable to the project as a whole. “The overall aesthetic of the house really hit that ‘beach house feel’ nail on the head – the light exterior and interior with windows framing views over the estuary and creating constantly changing vistas for the inhabitants is something pretty special and while more of a design feature, it was a delight to craft it for the owners.” dalman.co.nz

History with heart

rom a 112-year-old charitable trust facilitating the delivery of Allan McLean’s will to one of the city’s finest retirement villages, Holly Lea’s history is as long as it is illustrious. A successful runholder and philanthropist, McLean left a substantial amount of his estate to be used by The McLean Institute, incorporated in 1908 after his passing. Part of this charitable directive included operating Manchester Street’s palatial McLean Mansion (the original Holly Lea) “as a home for women of refinement or education in reduced or straitened circumstances”. Holly Lea continued to operate from the site until 1956, when the Government purchased the property, and Holly Lea made the move to Fendalton. While Holly Lea has since been transformed into a retirement village, the caring and nurturing that are the heart of its foundation remain. 1 cup buckwheat flour (blended from buckwheat groats) 1 cup coconut flour (blended from shredded coconut) 1 cup any type of milk (oat milk is used in this recipe) 3 tbsp J Friend & Co. West Coast Rich Rainforest Honey 2 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup blueberries

Blend the buckwheat and coconut into a fine flour. Add the remaining ingredients, apart from the blueberries. Blend the mixture until you have a smooth and thick consistency. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and melt your 1/2 tsp of coconut oil in the hot pan. Spoon the desired amount of mixture for each pancake into your pan. It’s best to cook each pancake for approximately two minutes on each side. Serve these pancakes with your desired toppings – try a coconut yoghurt, a smattering of hemp seeds, a nut butter, or even fresh banana and extra blueberries. Leftover pancakes will store in the fridge for up to 10 days.

have to be honest here, I have never understood the appeal of Cup Day. Sure, there may be some bitter side of me – due to never being invited to a Cup Day party – that has just written the entire experience off. I do fret that I’ve robbed myself of that quintessential Christchurch experience of being blind drunk, sun-burnt, and screaming at a horse that I’ve spent my course-related costs on to make me rich. I’ve never even really experienced much of Christchurch town nightlife as a whole either. The only time I ever made it into town was on the night of my Seventh Form formal. Using my friend’s fake ID, we missioned out to the strip; as soon as I stepped out of the taxi, my eyes were met with two young women engaged in a fistfight on the ground, both attempting to pull out each other’s fake hair extensions. I immediately clicked my heels three times and chanted ‘there’s no place like home’. Parties have never been something I’ve been that good at; I was convinced it was a pastime only reserved for the ‘cool

kids’. Monday morning form class at high school was always filled with stories of who lost their virginities and who had brush-ups with the police after doing ‘nos’ in a park. Naturally, I felt a pressure to overcompensate – playing catch-up at our uncool drama kid parties, where we would drink orange and vodka from the goon sack as if our lives depended on it. One fateful night, a few of the cool kids somehow crossed over to our nerdy drama kid party and were left stunned by the velocity that we were drinking at. One of the rowing boys turned to me and said, “Wow, you drama kids really party hard!” to which I replied, “We are only drinking this much because we thought that’s how much you drank”. I’ve always wondered if that’s why all the big amazing artists in this world are such booze and drugs users. Deep down they are still the uncool drama kids, trying to play catch up with cool kids and, without even knowing, overtook them years ago.

There were a few people who didn’t like the idea of a female taking over and changing things, but I think change is often a good thing. That’s why we don’t have the run-of-the-mill boring supermarket items. We make all our bratwursts, frankfurters, biersticks, and our big range of small goods by hand here on-site with only locally sourced meat and natural
