EDITOR’S NOTE

God only knows…

I

’ve really warmed to the idea of being married lately. Who would have thought? Ten years with someone incredible will do that to you. To be quite frank, I never pictured myself as a married man. Not for any nefarious reasons; I just couldn’t picture myself in any other ‘form’ other than how I currently exist. This is perhaps a somewhat ironic stance for someone who moonlights as a wedding celebrant. Well, it looks like all of that is out the window. Who knows what 2022 holds for my marital status – I’m picturing a cocktail party that turns into a surprise announcement of the ‘done deed’ via a black and white video projection of the nuptials. Throw in God Only Knows by The Beach Boys somewhere, too! Too much? Hold the phone... perhaps I pictured myself as a married man all along?! I’m sure there’s plenty of readers of Avenues who have surpassed my decade-long relationship with nary a wince. Who amongst you has 30, 40 years under their belt? I wonder who amongst the Avenues readers can take out the title of ‘longest union’? Do let me know if you think you’d take it out – we’ll flick a year-long Aves subscription to the winner. For someone who doesn’t keep a pair of socks longer than six months, you can rest assured my humble almost ten years is a momentous achievement. Mostly because it means someone out there puts up with me! Day in, day out. As you can imagine, it’s relentless. I’m relentless! Team Avenues has packed this issue full of celebration. Danni talks about her lockdown wedding, and Kia fills us in on something very special indeed… not to mention the beautiful bride on our cover. We’re so lucky to share with you Raksha and Sushant’s wedding – full of vibrancy, beauty and, of course, love. Enjoy the September issue and the embrace of spring – finally!

SYMPHONY OF SPRING

Liam Stretch Culture Editor

T

here is something strangely sacred about September. It’s a month where life leaps back into action after months of hibernation. Swathes of colour are employed by Mother Nature as daffodils and tulips fill the spaces that were relegated to muted tones over the winter – we’re an audience to this spring symphony. With our winter coats left by the door, there’s a whole new range of events to be experienced this month – both within and outside the theatre walls. Perfect for getting your dancing shoes on, and a recent discovery of mine, is local band Yurt Party. These boys play some rousing Balkan beats, and I last saw them at Ferrymead’s Nostalgia Festival. They’re performing at Level One Craft Beer Bar in New Brighton on September 11, which I encourage you all to go along to and unleash your inner Zorba.

DOLLY IS BACK!

FACE VALUE

The queen of country has returned with single Sent From Above. The track, which has been released in celebration of her new fragrance, has a 2021 melodic backing beat, but it has kept the essence that has made the 75-year-old singer’s sound so iconic. With 2021 seeing a shift in music to the melancholic, this is an antidote to a down buzz. This is one that both you and mum are going to enjoy – dad might also bop along.

Perhaps one of the more bizarre shows to hit Netflix in recent times, Sexy Beasts, puts a spin on the dating show model. On the show, contestants are done up in masks and costumes – think baboons, devils, rhinos, and birds – to see if a date can go well just based on someone’s personality, though most seem to be lacking one. It’s an entertaining watch, albeit a little disturbing. And, surprise, surprise, every single person behind the mask is attractive.

CHEAP EATS Michael Van de Elzen and Ganesh Raj, hosts of the TVNZ hit show Eat Well For Less NZ, bring the eponymous cookbook to shelves. It features around 70 recipes from the show – everything from Karaage Chicken Schnitzel through to Smoked Fish Pâté. It has certainly given me an option or two to make on a budget. This could be the perfect gift for your student child who is eating a few too many packets of twominute noodles – or maybe for your Auckland friends paying rents through the roof?

MOON FESTIVAL

It’s like no show you’ve ever seen when Dungeon Master Brendon Bennetts and his brigade of comedians roll dice, slay orcs, and shoot magic missiles – thankfully, Little Andromeda provides the stage. As an ongoing series of performances, each episode can be enjoyed on its own, or the audience can join in the wider conversation online.

Jamie McCaskill, Cohen Holloway, Erroll Anderson, and Regan Taylor are set to serenade as The Māori Sidesteps, with soulful harmonies, satirical skits, and superb song parodies. With rave reviews and a hit web series, this awesome foursome showband present your favourite songs with mischievous and hilarious twists. Don’t miss this Christchurch debut!

The city is to be illuminated this month with The South Island Moon Festival. This cultural event will see Ōtautahi pumping with displays of art, lanterns, performances, and food this spring. The festival is a tradition dating back 3000 years, coinciding with the harvest and the moon being at its biggest and brightest – a time for families to celebrate together.

WATCH THIS SPACE Wild Style Artist The DTR Crew (Dcypher, Ikarus, Wongi ‘Freak’ Wilson, Jacob Yikes) with Oi YOU! Street Art Date October 2020 Location South Frame, Durham Street In the quiet laneway leading from Durham Street to the Kahikatea Common in the South Frame, this vibrant production takes the viewer through a decades-spanning journey, celebrating graffiti art’s global and local legacies while also playfully riffing on popular culture icons. Produced by Ōtautahi’s most renowned graffiti collective, the DTR crew (Dcypher, Ikarus, Jacob Yikes and Wongi ‘Freak’ Wilson) with support from OiYOU! Street Art and Ōtākaro Limited, the mural unfolds across 40 metres, with multiple narrative threads and surprising details to explore. The mural begins with a slab of concrete transformed into a New York subway car painted with graffiti before a Star Wars-inspired text crawl sets the scene. Wall sections then draw from movies and television to evoke progressive time periods (from Back to the Future to Rick and Morty), while spray-can figures re-frame the evolution of graffiti artists within the famous march of progress, from a marker pen wielding tagger to a be-spectacled hipster street artist, a microcosm of the art form’s growth. WEDDING BELLS

I Kia Dirkson, Fashion & Beauty Editor

am engaged! Does this column count as an announcement these days? Seen above is us at The Heritage Hotel. This is where I lived when we first began and seemed fitting for our engagement shoot. This being my second time around, I have found that the formalities have changed quite a lot. E-vites and DMs now serve as acceptable platforms for a socially informal announcement. The modern bride has never had it so easy. I love weddings and once owned a stationery company that created custom designs for brides of a certain taste in America. Based upon the selected style, décor, and design of the day, my company handcrafted pieces that became framed keepsakes for the bride and groom to forever remember their nuptials. Despite this blanket announcement, I am personally creating our invitations, and I have visions of recycled ivory fabrics in the making. For this month’s Couture – entitled Bold, New, and a Bit of Blue – I put a new spin on an old adage that has always assisted in

16

shaping the style of weddings throughout history. We selected a bold print piece that makes a clear statement of style. Have your choice of the ever on-trend wrap dress that we spotted locally at both Lynn Woods and Workshop. Are you heading to a more low-key occasion? The maxi dress we feature here from Witchery is comfortably cool and well-paired with the Mollen heels we selected from Mi Piaci. Finish it off with smart accessories from Deadly Ponies and Christian Dior (I need those glasses!). Back to me, now. I found my ideal engagement ring at Youngs Jewellers; it’s classic and timeless, as will be the day I pray. We will have a private ceremony held at The Residence at The George Hotel where our publisher also celebrated her special day. Keeping it in the (27 Publishers) family, my editor Joshua Brosnahan will officiate the ceremony. He also took this photo. And, what will I be wearing? You’ll just have to wait and see.

A LOCKDOWN LOVE

I Danni Duncan, Beauty & Wellness Ambassador @danni__duncan

was meant to get married in April 2020. That’s right, smack bang in the middle of a nationwide lockdown. Cue the tears. Not one to be upstaged by a pesky virus, we made the most of it and spent the evening dancing, laughing, and letting the wine flow in our decorated lounge. It was definitely a night to remember. Our official wedding day became a very beautiful blessing in what was initially an anxiety-inducing disguise, and I’ve now become an advocate for intimate, low-key affairs. We celebrated the day a couple of months post-lockdown with 17 of our closest family and friends. We got married in the local church chapel and headed out to our favourite restaurant, Francesca’s Italian Kitchen, for our dinner reception. This saved

22

us a significant amount of money but more importantly, we were relaxed, we savoured every moment, and we were able to focus solely on ‘us’. I still felt incredibly pampered during the day with my friend Tom at Balayage Hair styling my hair into beautiful soft glam waves and my youngest sister doing my makeup. In fact, my family all played a special part in our day. Dad officiated the wedding, my brother walked me down the aisle, my brother-in-law captured the day on video, Mum helped me get ready, and both my sisters were bridesmaids. If the current state of the world has taught us anything, it’s that the connections we have with our family and friends are what is most important.

THE MARRIAGE OF MAREWA

F

our foot ten with light brown hair and blue eyes, Marewa Parkinson was the only daughter of a wealthy Banks Peninsula family. She lived at Kaituna Homestead on a large sheep farm that had belonged to her grandfather Thomas Hodgson Parkinson. Schooled at Rangi Ruru, Marewa enjoyed a full social calendar that included balls, tennis parties, race club meetings, and regular overseas travel. Accompanied by her parents, Walter and Agnes, in July 1925, she attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace. The following year, she was presented at Court by her aunt, Lady Parkinson, the wife of Sir Thomas Parkinson, physician to the Admiral Prince Louis of Mountbatten. Amongst the beautiful gowns and exquisite jewels, Marewa appeared in half-length white charmeuse embroidered with diamanté, pearls, and silver, with a matching train and feathered headdress. In 1928, over 400 guests came to Kaituna for Marewa’s wedding to Leonard Coop – to unite two old and respected Peninsula families. It

was one of the largest functions held in the district for years. The service took place in the garden. Marewa wore her oyster white satin Court frock, embroidered in crystal, with side panels and sleeves of silver lace. A V-shaped train hung from her shoulders, draped on one side with Irish lace. A long filmy tulle veil fell from a coronet of orange blossom and hid her face. She carried a begonia bouquet. Her chief bridesmaid wore a lupin blue taffeta frock, caught at the waist with a diamante buckle; the skirt fell in uneven lengths. The two bridesmaids and two flower girls dressed alike in lupin blue georgette, and they all wore blue capeline felt hats turned up in front, with a streamer falling over one shoulder. Each carried a small early Victorian posy of pink flowers mounted on blue tulle. When Marewa left for her wedding tour, she wore a cherry red crepe de chine frock with a cross-stitch design on the bodice and the pleated apron of the skirt banded in fawn. Her hat was of a fawn georgette closely stitched, and she carried a musquash fur coat.

A GIFT FOR CENTURIES WORDS Sarah Dillon PHOTO Emma Brittenden

W

hat do you get for the couple who has it all? Laura Dalzell and Charles Smart had set up house five years prior to their wedding and were looking for gift ideas that would mean the earth. The couple met in their first year at the University of Otago – although there were no signs of romance for a few years. Now together for eight, they’ve made their home together in Auckland with Sylvie, the cat, and were married in January this year. While most COVID considerations were solved with a simple video call link, the problem of how to allow guests near and far to contribute meaningful wedding gifts remained. “Not only did we feel we didn’t need any physical gifts, we didn’t have room for much in our wee townhouse,” laughs Laura. “There were some family members who really wanted to give us a special gift – for which we were grateful – but we felt that it would mean much more to us to be able to give back to the world. We wanted our marriage to reflect our values of caring for others and the planet.” The solution? Native trees. After some initial Googling, Laura stumbled across Trees That Count, a website that helps connect people wanting to donate native trees with over 700 planting groups across Aotearoa. Laura and Charles set up their own native tree registry, which works just like any other gift registry. Guests could log in to donate native trees and leave a message for the couple. They were overwhelmed with the positive response. “Our guests loved the idea. Many of them commented how nice it was to give to a charity, rather than giving ‘stuff’.”

The opportunity also gave rise to a number of tree puns from creative guests, including, ‘We can’t be-leaf how lucky you are to have each other’, ‘We know you’ll stick together in the years ahead’, ‘Make sure to branch out and try new things; that’ll keep you feeling chipper’, and ‘You’ve grown so much together, and we know you’ll have a treemendous life ahead.’ Laura and Charles’ wedding registry received an amazing 452 native trees donated. The trees, of course, don’t head to the couple’s own backyard – they’ll be distributed to experienced planting groups in their chosen region of Canterbury. Most of the native trees gifted for Laura and Charles’ wedding will find their homes at Hidden Valley Farm, south of Christchurch. The landowners have fenced off two hectares of stream gully for native regeneration and are already seeing native birdlife return to the area with over 10,000 eco-sourced native plants in the ground. More of the native trees donated by wedding guests will be planted at AvonŌtākaro Forest Park, an indigenous forest park established within the red zone. The final ten were matched to West Harbour Beautification Trust in Dunedin, a nod to the couple’s history in the city. “We have strong environmental values, and we know that trees are so important for carbon storage and biodiversity,” Laura says. “We felt that by creating our registry for native trees, we are contributing in a small way to our future. Being able to give in this way has meant a lot to us and added to the spirit and values of our wedding, which is a lovely way to start our marriage.”

ride and groom are bright with garlanded flowers and smile into each other’s eyes as they hold hands. She is dressed in red and gold (a bridal lehenga), draped with gorgeous jewellery, her veil delicate and exquisitely bordered. He wears soft red trousers, a debonair high collar coat with red chiffon shawl, and a cream turban. What a picture for Raksha and Sushant Saxena to cherish, one of many that so beautifully capture the Christchurch couple’s wedding day on 27 February 2021 at the Lower Hutt Events Centre. They chose a contemporary ceremony that was also steeped in Hindu tradition. Fijian-born Raksha Kajol Singh was newly graduated from architectural studies at Victoria University of Wellington when she met Sushant Saxena, an IT engineer who had moved from India with his family in 2001. That was in 2017. They soon became friends and eventually, as they got to know each other better, started dating. When Raksha found work as a design consultant in Christchurch, Sushant began job hunting here too and followed her down. They continued dating for another two years, living separately until their wedding day out of respect for their religion and culture. Whereas typical Kiwi weddings focus on ‘the big day’, Raksha and Sushant say Hindu weddings such as theirs take place over several days, with various ceremonies held before the main event. These include Ganesh Pooja, performed by a priest with only close relatives in attendance and Mehndi night when the bride and female relatives are adorned with intricate patterns in henna. The following day, Haldi or turmeric is used as a skin cleanser, and

Sangeet is held in the evening – when the bride and groom’s families meet and mingle over food and dance. On the day of the wedding, the bride’s family arrives at the venue first. The groom and his family and friends then parade to the venue with dancing and drumming (Baraat). It is also traditional for the groom to ride in on a horse. “My sister helped me source a horse, [along with equine wedding attire],” says Sushant. “We drove to the car park, which was 200 metres from the actual venue and then I rode the rest of the way with my nephew sitting in front of me and everyone dancing and joining in.” Following Raksha’s arrival, the couple exchanged floral garlands to welcome each other to the mandap – a four-pillared canopy – for the ceremony. It took place over an hour and a half and included many prayers and offerings. One touching ritual saw veil and shawl tied together to symbolise the couple’s union (Gath Bandan). The bride’s family stayed in the mandap to participate in prayers and gave Raksha’s hand in marriage to her groom. To sanctify the ceremony, a small fire (Agni) was kept burning and offerings made. The bride’s brother gave fistfuls of puffed rice to the groom as a wish for his sister’s happy marriage. As well, seven promises or vows were recited, and this bride and groom’s first steps as a couple were also around the fire (Phere). Traditional Indian wedding day fare is vegetarian with no alcohol served, but guests were able to toast the newlyweds at a joyous reception event held the next day.

ICONIC DAY, ICONIC VENUE WORDS Kathy Catton

C

hoosing a venue for your wedding is a huge step. It’s an important one, too: once you have a destination in mind, you can start filling in all the other details that will transform your wedding into a truly special event. If the Christchurch Town Hall hasn’t been on your wedding venue horizon, it’s time to look at what this iconic location offers. When most people think of the Christchurch Town Hall, they think of large concerts and visiting dignitaries. But did you know it’s host to dozens of weddings every year? This iconic Ōtautahi destination is an impressive setting for what will undoubtedly be one of the most important days of your life. And it’s not just for large weddings either. Small, intimate affairs are equally at home here. The Town Hall offers two spaces in which you can host your wedding. The Avon Room offers exceptional views out over Victoria Park and the iconic Ferrier Fountains. With its white ceilings and blonde wooden features, it’s an elegant and welcoming space that can accommodate up to 170 guests. The Avon Room is fully customisable to suit your vision and offers optional access out to the beautiful fountain terrace for a refreshing outdoor element. The Limes Room is the perfect setting for larger affairs, able to accommodate up to 260 people seated banquet style or approximately 400 cocktail style. The Limes Room is situated on the second floor, up the Town Hall’s grand staircase. Fully refurbished, this large and immaculate room

combines light, space and treetop views to stunning effect. Catering for weddings at the Christchurch Town Hall is provided by an adept culinary team – headed by a well-known chef with over 23 years of experience. He can work with you to create a bespoke menu, or you can choose from four packaged options featuring a delectable range of canapés, bowls, main courses, and desserts. The Christchurch Town Hall has a local procurement policy, meaning your menu and beverage choices won’t simply be mouth-watering for your guests; they’ll be supporting local businesses too. You’ll be assigned a dedicated wedding event manager when you choose to host your wedding at the Christchurch Town Hall. They will assist you with everything, from designing the big picture to taking care of every last detail. Everything you need will be provided for by experienced experts, from set-up to coordination, sounds, and lighting – leaving you to focus on friends, family, and the things that matter. The Christchurch Town Hall has long been a city icon, and as a setting for your wedding, it will also become a treasured part of your life. Imagine your special day in the midst of our stunning garden city, remembered through photographs on the grand staircase, in front of the Ferrier Fountain, in the gardens, or somewhere uniquely urban. One thing is certain. After experiencing a wedding at the Christchurch Town Hall, neither you nor your guests will ever pass by this iconic place without thinking back to your special day, and the memories created.

STORIES BROUGHT TO LIFE

L

ifetime Legacy’s stunning ‘Magical Moments’ book is perhaps only missing one thing – your stories. As a vehicle for recording personal life stories in a oneon-one interview with your own writer, the experience is remarkably easy and enjoyable. Artistically illustrated native birds and flowers form a delightful backdrop, an apt setting to life stories being lived in New Zealand. Mother and daughter team Joanne Cormack and Jasmin Bristowe – writer and videographer at Lifetime Legacy – transcribe a person’s stories into the book before it goes to print. Ten life-stage sections form its basis, with personal photographs and the sharing of well-earned wisdom a key feature, and all with a view to creating an heirloom for future generations of one’s family. The final book run, of perhaps ten or twenty, are store-quality, engaging coffee-table pieces. Jo’s passion for honouring the passing down of stories is inspiring. “A person’s stories are the greatest legacy of their lifetime and have enduring value to future generations of their family. As digital

print and video become increasingly viable, more everyday New Zealanders are recording their stories,” Jo says. Lifetime Legacy also offers Living Legacy Videos where, in a one-on-one interview, a person shares their stories, life events, and memories, all within the relaxed setting of their own home. “Imagine how wonderful it would have been to have viewed your own great-greats talking about their lives. It wasn’t an option back then, but it is now,” Jo says. “Our framework supports people who want to be intentional about gifting their stories forward. It gives them a structure for the production of their book or video.” So often people don’t get around to recording their stories. Even if it’s what is considered a bucket list item, sometimes this important and integral part of recording your personal heritage is side-lined. This is usually because people ‘just don’t know where to start’, according to Jo. “At Lifetime Legacy, we make it happen, and in the process, we make it a fun and rewarding experience.”

WEDDING PICTURE STORIES

W Lynette McFadden Business Owner & Mentor Harcourts gold @lynette_mcfadden

hat comes to mind when you think about weddings? Is it the bride resplendent in white, accompanied by eight bridesmaids? Is it the venue, beautifully styled? Or maybe it’s the cost, which can take on the semblance of a mortgage. For me, it’s this: I’m intrigued and drawn to wedding pictures. I like the story they tell, the promise they offer for the journey ahead and the fashion snapshot they offer, travelling through the various decades. I’m reminded of old wedding photos proudly displayed in my grandparents’ best (and only) living room. The bride is young; there’s one, two at most, bridesmaids and often a flower girl with a little silken horseshoe on her arm ready to give to the bride. Is this still done? Next to these pictures came the next generation of wedding photos with my cousins in flares, wide ’70s ties, and sideboards. The colours were brighter, dresses shorter, and smiles bigger.

40

I got married in the ’80s, along with many of my friends. It was simple by today’s standards. My mother made my dress, which was knee-length, my large Māori whānau was in attendance, along with rugby mates and nursing pals. A kind and elderly Catholic priest who was the Christchurch Hospital Chaplain performed the vows as well as talking to John and me about the sanctity of marriage in the weeks beforehand. I always appreciated him turning a blind eye to the fact we were living together. I remember being overjoyed, and I remain that way. In the last ten years, close to 50 per cent of the weddings I’ve attended have ended unceremoniously and quickly. The care that deep love promised eroded. It’s hard, it’s beautiful, it’s a journey, and after 38 years of marriage, I’d like to wish anyone on the cusp of getting married all the very best for everything that lies ahead. Enjoy the moment, the promise, and of course, the photos.

icking a colour palette from artwork or a cushion is one of the simplest interior design tricks to help create a scheme. I have pushed this monochromatic scheme a little more with the addition of geometric patterns and stripes. Resene Black adds a focal point that anchors and grounds a room, adding white to that sets off the drama. Violá – a monochromatic one-two punch – knockout. The Kiwi-made occasional chair from Frobisher has been upholstered in a striking houndstooth fabric from James Dunlop but can be custom made in any fabric or leather options. Got a wall that needs that a little something extra? Why not a mural? Grab some Resene testpots in your favourite hues and go wild with geometrical shapes or stripes. An instant space saver, a side table offers a single-seater the option for popping down your glass of wine without taking up the space of a larger coffee table. This elegant piece from Belle Interiors is simple and beautiful, with the detail of steel dowels holding up the functional top. Next month we channel Mondrian with colour and shape! Which will you prefer?

THE ESSENTIALS WORDS Liam Stretch

ome things go out of fashion, but a welldressed man is not one of them. Thankfully, 3 Wise Men at Merivale Mall has been there to ensure the fellas in our lives are in top shape from head to toe. The brand, started by three mates (you guessed it, the ‘wise men’) back in 2004, was established with the aim to make shirt shopping, in particular, a pleasure and not a chore. All these years and 10 stores throughout the country later, it stocks everything from dress shoes to ties, suits to cufflinks. Jess, store manager at the brand’s Merivale Mall location, has been with the company for six years and really enjoys being in the heart of Merivale and the mall itself. The warm, contemporary space fits seamlessly into its surroundings. She cites the brand’s ethos as a reason for her long-time dedication to the high-end brand. “3 Wise Men’s company values and attitude are what makes the business stand out from the rest. We are encouraged to strive to be the best we can be and acknowledged for our contributions to the company,” she says. With options across the board in terms of high-end men’s clothing, from casual shirts and chinos to more formal suits, ties, and shoes, Jess believes there is something to suit all tastes and types.

“We target a wide range of customers here, whether you need a new shirt for an important board room meeting, [a] hot date on a Friday night, or something to wear to the Sunday BBQ.” As spring has sprung and the season of weddings is beginning, Jess said it’s key that men make their mark, and a great outfit is the first step. She says that a complementary suit and shirt combo is the one thing every guy needs for a day of nuptials. One accessory is a must, though – a ‘3 Wise Men leather belt’. Suits are investment pieces and should serve you well in her opinion, and the way 3 Wise Men does things means that a good suit will work for you beyond the wedding day, business trip, or networking event. “Our suits are 100 per cent merino wool and come with two pairs of trousers, which doubles the lifetime of the suit,” she says. On top of this quality, Jess says that customers will be treated right and visitors can expect exceptional and friendly service. “We all enjoy helping customers find what they are looking for, and we will go above and beyond to ensure this; after all, this is what we do best!” Jess says relationships are an essential part of the 3 Wise Men ethos – hence many customers have been with them since the brand’s beginning all those years ago in 2004.

ndrew and Elizabeth Hayes are the owners of Million Springs Farm in the stunning Hakataramea Valley. The former sheep, beef and dairy farm has been in the Hayes family for six generations and is now the proud home of Nest. Since taking over the property in 2009 and progressing the farm, the couple has constantly been searching for other ways to celebrate the land. Nest is a hidden jewel on the family farm. These luxury treehouses offer guests something special, an enchanting experience to remember. Guests are spoilt with luxurious amenities, local produce, and attractions. Treehouse guests will be taken back to a time of simple, carefree joy and can truly relax in their peaceful surroundings. As ‘Nest makers’, Liz and Andy are a selfdescribed ‘pair of big kids’ looking to help others relive their childhood adventures in the lap of luxury amongst the treetops – they wanted to provide a space where people could come, breathe, and return to a carefree, idyllic state of mind. “As kids, there was no better way to escape and dream than to climb high into the arms of tree branches. “Walking through the trees, with the lights glittering and swing bridge ahead, it’s hard not to return to the magic and adventure of our youth. In this busy, racing world, we wanted to create not only a place to stay, but a place to experience, one we hope you walk away from feeling refreshed, invigorated, and recharged.” So what can one expect at Nest? You’ll be able to snuggle in style under the stars in your very own treehouse, perched high amongst the branches overlooking the dramatic

contours of the majestic Hakataramea Valley. A short stroll through the trees is a swing bridge, which will lead you to your architecturally designed treehouse, where you will be enveloped in style, invigoration, and comfort. You can soak up the unique scenery from the tree canopy in your private outdoor cedar bathtub or get your steam on in the luxury cedar sauna with breath-taking panoramic views from the mountain tops to the sprawling farmland far below. Inside your treehouse, floor to ceiling windows ensure you feel one with nature while you’re warmed by the cosy, flickering fire and wrapped in your sumptuous surroundings. According to the couple, Nest is all about rewarding the intrepid tourist by showing them rural New Zealand at its best – to tempt them to take the road less travelled, in the utmost style and comfort. Nest subtly immerses people in nature to enjoy a more authentic rural New Zealand. “We feel we live in a little piece of paradise. It’s largely undiscovered to New Zealand travellers, and we are loving showing it off, and enjoy being able to provide a place for loved ones and friends to celebrate, reconnect, and just take time out from their busy lives.” Liz says the duo have booked two elopements for the upcoming summer season and even helped with a proposal. “We have been overwhelmed and blown away by the response so far, and just glad people seem to love the concept and project as much as Andy and I do. It’s completely understandable that once guests arrive, they may never want to leave. For a beautiful moment in time, they won’t have to.”

THIS IS ME

H Jax Hamilton, Food Editor jaxhamilton.co.nz

ello, Avenues readers. I’m so happy to meet you between these gorgeous pages. Welcome to Palate, with me, Jax Hamilton, your brand new and excited to be here, Food Editor. Last month, I was proud to celebrate my 20th year as a resident of Christchurch. I arrived fresh from London in 2001 with my family and, since then, I have witnessed so many changes to our city regarding the hospitality and weekend market scene. Food has always held such mystery for me. We didn’t have a huge amount of money growing up, but our meals were always incredible. From the instant the garlic and onions hit the pan until the ladle of soup kissed the bottom of the dish, our mealtimes were always something of a feasting enigma. However, when I began my high school years, I was so surprised and bitterly disappointed to discover the meals served at lunchtime in the halls of my Ursuline

59

Convent School to be bland and completely void of any personality whatsoever. It wasn’t all bad; in those same halls, I was introduced to pastry, and together we’ve enjoyed a deep and passionate love affair ever since – ha! The difference? Love. As an eight-year-old child, I began to cook for my family and realised the first thing you ever put into the pan is love, with an intention to share as a gift. That way, it will appear on the plate every time, whether you’re cooking with two or 24 ingredients. Christchurch and Canterbury is a veritable smorgasbord of ingredients. Out there is an enormous, ever-evolving pantry to be discovered and shared. We’re so lucky to boast some of the finest, freshest produce and wine and beer on this beautiful little island – as well as award-winning restaurants, cafés, and eateries. Loosen your belts, my friends (ooh, is it too soon?) because I’m raring to go. If you see me out and about, say hello.

FIRST DATE DILEMMA Get it wrong, and you’re gone. Right, and it may last all night!

THE PERMIT ROOM

THE BREW ACADEMY

ISAAC THEATRE ROYAL

779 Colombo Street, Christchurch permitroom.co.nz

84 Falsgrave Street, Waltham brewacademy.co.nz

145 Gloucester Street, Christchurch issactheatreroyal.co.nz

Arrange to meet your date by the Poupou fountain in Victoria Square, then wander over to dine in the dark, sexy opulence of The Permit Room. Out: flock wallpaper, Taj Mahal posters and copper curry bowls. In: cut crystal glasses and porcelain platters. Here, illicitness meets opportunity, and the Southern Indian menu reflects all of this wonderfully. Perfect for small plates and shared dining. From banana and kale bhajis to Keralan fried chicken, gunpowder cauliflower, and much more – plus fabulous vegan selections. The drinks menu is extensive, with a range of bespoke, exotic, and spicy cocktails.

Now, this is a true geezer-pleaser. Take your geezer and head down to Waltham and learn how to brew your own beer from the experts. Classes include a beautiful lunch from Smoke ‘n’ Barrel, plus you get to take home 40 bottles of freshly brewed grog. The Smoke ‘n’ Barrel menu is a beer match made in heaven. There’s a range of burgers, 1kg sticky ribs, beef cheek mains; Mac n cheese, mayo-loaded slaw. Oooh, potato skins and a nice little salad (+ meat) menu if you’re watching your weight. Or just head down for a plate and pint of my personal favourite, the Chinchilla – Hop Life Hazy IPA.

Impress your date with some heady romance and book the Royal Box, canapés, and champagne experience. This can be done independent of tickets for a show. Hosted by an ITR team member, you’re treated to canapés and champagne whilst in the Royal Box, where you can enjoy views of the lovingly restored dome and stage. If you are there for a show, you enter the theatre 35 minutes prior to the main audience and are personally seated by an attendant. Come interval; you will be treated to ice creams and any additional pre-ordered drinks. P.S. if all goes well, you’re able to get married in the box, too – just saying!

Not to worry, at Bottle and Stone, every eventuality is covered. It’s a fun, funky, and impressive little space off Quill Lane. There’s a mixture of high leaners and intimate tables, and it has

a small and delicious menu. There’s an interactive kitchen with fabulous pizza toppings and the ability to order a slab, half a slab or if you need to exit quickly, just a slice. All going well; you may want to send a sly message. Order a side of *BAE shoestring fries (*[you] before anyone else) that’ll kick up the heat; you may even find yourself brushing digits with your date. They’re

This family patisserie has an ever-evolving range of pasties, entremets, choux, tarts, and plenty of ‘cakey stuff’. Silky smooth pink chocolate is sometimes all you need in your life. With 28 per cent cacao white chocolate and generously topped with a tart punch of freeze-dried raspberries, New Zealand dry roasted hazelnuts and crunchy cacao nibs, each of these gluten-free bars has a touch of edible gold flake for a luxe finish. House of Chocolate is a carefully handcrafted Kiwi brand stocked locally at Ballantynes.

Butter’s latest menu offerings have arrived, which means spring ushers in bold, sweet flavours with fruit. The office favourite here at Avenues HQ is the lemon and hazelnut tart. A mix of crunch, zest, and pillowy soft meringue, and locally sourced ingredients mean this is set to be a menu favourite for the warmer months. Butter’s tarts easily feed four people, maybe six if you’re restrained. Not us.

HAGLEY CHERRY BLOSSOM This dessert is one of Sweet Soul’s iconic limited editions. The pastry chefs create these when the cherry flowers blossom at Hagley Park and continue to serve them until summertime. This year, spring will be even more special than usual, as every Hagley Cherry Blossom dessert sold means a donation of one dollar to the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Foundation. Founder Taina Scur says that this offering is a special dessert. “Not just because of its amazing taste and the meaning behind the name, but because we support Pink October and the wider community. It’s a sweet fulfilment for us.” sweetsoul.nz

Braised octopus WITH MARTINEZ CHORIZO, PRESERVED LIME, AND TOMATO MARINARA

Kinross Winery is in the heart of Gibbston’s incredible wine region, only 20 minutes from Queenstown. Chef Pete Franklin and his team have made a conscious decision to carefully source local, free-range, organic, and sustainably focused food. They have been foraging, preserving, fermenting, and proofing; the team was inspired during the 2020 lockdown to focus on utilising all the incredible fruits, plants (and skills) at their disposal to create delicious additions for the winery’s menu. 99 per cent of the ingredients you will taste on your plate at Kinross will be created on-site – from the sourdough base of the pizzas, the sauces, pesto, preserves and pastes, the cured and smoked meats, crackers, and even honey from their hives.

SERVES 4

Braised octopus One whole octopus Stock 2 onions 6 cloves 4 sticks of celery Juice and zest of 2 lemons 3 star anise 3 bay leaves 2 tbs salt 2 cups red wine 8 cups water A handful of basil leaves to garnish

To make stock, put ingredients into a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Blanch octopus for 10 seconds, then add to stock. Simmer for one hour, covered and weighed down so that the octopus is submerged. For the marinara sauce, blitz the tomatoes in a blender and pass through a sieve to remove the seeds. Following this, soften the shallots, garlic and lime in a little olive oil and water. Add the wine and reduce by half. Then add the tomatoes and reduce by a third. When cool, finish with a splash of sherry vinegar, cherry tomatoes, and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Combine and serve with crispy baby octopus and Martinez chorizo, some preserved lime, and crusty ciabatta.

Marinara sauce 1kg tomatoes 4 large shallots, finely chopped 10 cloves roasted garlic, chopped 2 tbs preserved lime, chopped 100ml white wine 2 tins cherry tomatoes Sherry vinegar 1 cup of chopped parsley

SOUR SIMPLICITY

SWEET N’ SMOOTH

LIL’ BIDDY!

We love cocktails that are creative with a mix of well-balanced, considered ingredients. The Violet Sour showcases simplicity over complexity. Highlights include gin, violette liqueur, lychee, and lemon with a hint of hibiscus extract. To enjoy one with 360-degree views, we suggest the Pink Lady Rooftop, which undoubtedly is one of the best spots in the city for an openair drink. Bring on the sunshine, and bring on the Violet Sours!

Looking for a premium Kentucky bourbon for dad, infused with the sweetness and smoothness of New Zealand honey? Batch10 has a strong, up-front Bourbon flavour with a smooth, natural honey finish which is proving very popular. This Puhoibased spirit brand recommends that your drink is best drunk neat and cold or with a cheeky splash of ginger beer. Try the Mānuka Smoked option for an alternative.

Reefton Distilling Co. and Swanndri have a lot in common; both are transforming raw elements of our environment into something wonderfully refined, with a dedication to enduring quality and down-to-earth Kiwi ambition. A bit like dad, really! Make him smile this Father’s Day. Little Biddy’s dry gin has notes of foraged watercress, snow moss, kahikatea tips, and toatoa – all delivering a soulful, aromatic experience.

SNAPSHOT IN TIME

ine is incredibly unique in its ability to capture time and place. If you’re a brewery or a distiller, then you can have ferments going any time of the year to suit demand. Winemaking means you only get one shot at it annually. It doesn’t matter if there has been a frost, if you can’t get staff due to a pandemic, or if there is a plague of locusts... I should not tempt fate! Good wine doesn’t rely on additives and winemaking tricks. It should tell you the story of the vintage, whether it was a wet summer or a drought. It should tell you where it was from in the world. North Canterbury wines always show intensity from the drying effects of the nor’wester and beautiful aromatics from our soil profiles. Just as a wedding, anniversary, or birthday celebrates a specific time, so does great wine. If you are to be celebrating a specific event, look to put some wine down in your cellar in advance or gift a special bottle from that year. You don’t need some fancy wine storage place, just somewhere that doesn’t get hot – in the back of a wardrobe works best. Most North

Canterbury Pinot Noir will taste better around the seven-to-ten-year mark. Then when you open that wine, you can reflect on what you were doing and where you were – a real snapshot in time you can enjoy with friends. Some wines I recommend: Greystone Vineyard Ferment Pinot Noir 2019 This is fermented outside in the vineyard so that it captures the native yeasts and flavours of Canterbury. A unique and award-winning wine for the true Pinotphile. $75, greystonewines.co.nz Muddy Water Pinot Noir 2018 From old, ungrafted vines that have deep roots into the clay-rich soil of Omihi. Organic and uncompromising with a fuller, richer style than many Pinots. $42, muddywater.co.nz Norwester Pinot Noir 2018 A blend of three sites across North Canterbury to capture that sense of what true Cantabrian Pinot tastes like. $28, vinofino.co.nz

named this Mark V ‘Winston’, after Winston Churchill, like Churchill, the car has that British Bulldog look. This car was manufactured in England but was first registered in Australia in 1949. It was imported and registered in New Zealand in 1996. It was fully restored from then up until 2002. This is my favourite car. Winston is a classic 1949 Jaguar Mark V, one of the most impressive saloon cars built in the first years after WWII. It has outstanding classic lines and is magnificent in metallic beige and bronze tones, with white-wall tyres. With sumptuous red leather upholstery and walnut panelling, it exhibits colour, class, and style. With its powerful 3.5 litre 6 cylinder motor, it is fast and very comfortable to ride in and drive. My business, All Black Classic Cars, specialises in classic car hire. With drivers for weddings, birthdays, school formals, elder person excursions, and tours in Christchurch and throughout Canterbury. I also have a 1937 Rolls Royce 25/30 limousine, a 949 Jaguar Mark V, a 1953 Jaguar Mark VII, and a 1996 Jaguar XK8 convertible.

“I love pattern design. It really, really excites me. “I moved to Melbourne when I was 19 with the dream of working for Julia Green at Greenhouse Interiors. With no experience, I found it really hard to find a decent job that would have me full time. I think I was a bit naive to think I could just turn up and slot into a dream role! “I came back home and landed a job in a trade design library. Every day I was around these beautiful fabrics and wall coverings and was able to keep in the know with what was happening with some of my favourite textile houses in the UK and Europe. That’s when I decided to make the move to London. “In March 2020, I packed everything up and had three months of backpacking planned before arriving in London. I had a job interview lined up at Chelsea Harbour, working in one of the showrooms there. I was in Nepal when things were really happening with the virus. “I was trekking the Annapurna Circuit at the time and was asleep one night, wrapped up in my sleeping bag, when my phone started

quacking – my duck ringtone. It hadn’t rung in four weeks, and it was my Dad. He said, ‘airlines are shutting down, borders are closing, you should try to get off the mountain tomorrow if you can’. I managed to get a jeep off the mountain, and I got a flight out on the 1st of April. “So I came home, and I thought, ‘what am I going to do?’ “I’m really passionate about jewellery design, and if I see something that I love, I want to be able to wear it. I started planning in lockdown how I was going to make these pieces of jewellery. I didn’t have any clay; I was living out of a backpack. My lovely friend delivered wine and art supplies! “I’m working on a range of wearable and functional ceramic art. I’ve been making earrings for the last year. I’m also doing classes learning how to take materials from the land to create glazes as an alternative to using commercially produced glaze. My work is ever-evolving as I experiment with different techniques and media.”
