EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome M

aybe you can recall back to our last issue in autumn, when I was lamenting about the value of time, and how wonderful it would be to be less “busy” and have more one-on-one moments with my son. Just like Wonky Donkey’s Craig Smith said in that issue, “find more time”. Cue: lockdown. I really should be more careful with what I wish for. This year has brought the best, and not-sobest, out in people. Stress and anxiety levels are soaring within families, not just with health concerns but also financial worries. It’s a really tough time. But it’s an important time to remember just to be present. Keep your conversations open with your family and close friends. See if you can support them in any way. Listening is the best free gift we can give someone. And be gentle. Words hurt. As artist and writer Austin Kleon says, “Be nice. The world is a small town.” And, my favourite, by author Ashleigh Brilliant: “Be kind to unkind people. They need it the most.”

And, just like that, I’m going to whisk myself away – much like Mary Poppins, who stays with the Banks’ family until the wind changes. A new season is here, and it’s time for a change for me. I’ve mentioned in the past, my life outside being this fabulous magazine’s editor is that of a marriage celebrant, and the months ahead are packed with so many wonderful weddings to officiate. And it’s a pleasure to introduce to you Anna Scaife, who has been with the 27Publishers team for a few years now. It’s like a little spring shuffle, as she moves from editing Abode magazine, over to Family Times. Anna, welcome! Wishing you all the very best on this adventurous parenting journey.

i! If I have any useful observations about parenthood, it’s that both the highlights and the worries of raising kids are made better when shared. Over the years, I have always made sure to scoop up my copy of Family Times while wrangling school bags and tired tots. And as mum to three, I gratefully receive the information, advice and inspiration in these pages. Thank you to Kineta for the welcome, I am excited to join the Family Times team!
