EDITORIAL The fifth issue of 2bemag is finally here, and so far the journey has been interesting, challenging and full of surprises, but most importantly - so rewarding! Step by step we are closer to achieving the initial idea behind 2bemag, to create a base of both readers and contributors that is as international and diverse as possible. The photographers collaborating for issue Nr. 5 are for e.g. from Austria, Sweden, France, Spain, Canada and Russia, and it gives our whole team such immense pleasure to receive and be able to publish more diverse and original work for every day that passes. The essence of 2bemag is really about, freedom of expression through the medium of photography, videography & writing and as always we invite you to collaborate with us. It is important for us to be able to give our fellow collaborators free hands to realize their dreams, and with the finished end result be able to shine the spotlight solely on the artists behind the contributions. Always feel free to contact them for new assignments, comment on their work or simply keep on following their path! We love to discover a talent – as well as we love to be discovered by a new reader. Come as you are and join us again for a new issue of 2bemag, full packed with international raw talent. Be with us 2beMag Staff e-mail: rawtalent@2bemag.com

GREG ALEXANDER Born in Lausanne, he grew up in Geneva then in Athens. Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to seize on glazed paper all the quintessence of femininity. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he found his home port. As a child, Greg Alexander dreamed of becoming a plastic surgeon, in order to preserve the women from the ravages of time. Becoming a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which ables to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of the beauty : fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

Emerging Raw Talents

Stine Goya founded in Copenhagen in 2006 by the designer of the same name, Stine Goya’s ambition is to break with the dominating monochromatic spectra of brands by reintroducing vibrant color and sculptural form into the circuit of functional high fashion. Following a diverse career in fashion, modeling for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, and styling for, amongst others, American Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, the 29-year-old Danish designer graduated from Central St. Martins college of Art in London in 2005, specializing in fashion with print. During the course of her studies she spent time under the tutelage of cutting edge designers: Eley Kishimoto, Hussein Chayalan and Jonathan Saunders, each of which have influenced her work, in their mastership of color, form and prints. After her graduation she joined the cutting edge Danish magazine, Cover, as fashion editor for a year. The diversity of her experience in the industry greatly inspires her approach to fashion through an understanding of it’s many facets. From the artistic presentation of the catwalk to the functional nature of clothing in their everyday use, it is Stine Goya’s aim

48 2beMag

to create pieces which exhibit strength no matter the arena in which they perform. It was this ambition combined with her instinctive need to create which led to the establishment of her personal label. Today Stine Goya is carried in leading stores in 14 countries across the world. The brand is expected to expand further on the international scene, continuing to present collections which are compelling, refined, and vivacious with a touch of the avant garde. Her debut show, Konfetti, was presented at the Copenhagen fashion week in February of 2007, sparking profound interest for an upcoming designer with an agenda to influence Scandinavian design. Since then, Stine Goya has experienced widespread acclaim in the industry for her particular and yet talented use of vibrant hues and aptitude for creating atypical silhouettes.

Spring/Summer 2010 “Bulles d’été” collection: The collection that was shown at Mercedes Benz Fashion week in Berlin seeked to capture an air of untroubled decadence, referencing the latent atmosphere prevalent among the youth of the upper class in the leisurely costal retreats of The Hamptons. Beach promenades, frivolous enjoyment of life, sensuality and a renunciation of earlier generations solemnity Fall/ Winter 10/11 “La Ville Fantôme“ collection : Stine Goya presented a Western-themed collection called the “Ghost town” at Copenhagen Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by the American landscape photographer Ansel Adams. „His pictures have a truly striking character in their portrayal of barren yet dramatic landscapes. They resonate a wild, almost hostile feeling and yet they have the most fantastic texture which beckons you closer“, states Stine. The importance of authenticity and renewal has always shone brighter than the one of adhering to current trends. With reference to painter Georgia O‘Keefe the „La Ville Fantôme“ embodies lustrous flower portraits and Hispanic atmosphere in the outskirts of New Mexico. Goya’s reputation in Copenhagen precedes her, and she has quickly become one of the country’s most well-known designers since her first collection in 2007. We can’t wait to see what the future will hold for this talented Danish designer.

Abbey Lee Kershaw – a bohemian summer child born the 12th of June 1987 in Melbourne, Australia. She is 180 cm tall, and her measurements are: 86 – 66 – 89 (EU). She is nowadays better known as just Abbey Lee, and has overcome some of the unluckiest of missteps on her road towards becoming a successful model. Everything started in 2004 when Abbey Lee was 16 years old, and was discovered on the beach by Kathy Ward from Chic just 100 meters from her home. During her first year of modeling Abbey Lee was working part time at the bakery section in the Newmarket Safeway, until she won the Australian Girlfriend Covergirl Model Search and decided to move to Sidney. Only a year after that, Abbey Lee packed her bags and traveled to New York to pursue her new career as a model. The road to success wasn’t easy though, in 2008 she famously fainted at Alexander McQueen’s Spring/summer show due to a particularly tight corset and Fashion Week fatigue. Two weeks prior Kershaw had fallen at Rodarte wearing Nicholas Kirkwood’s vertiginous heels. The latest controversy surrounding Abbey Lee has been about her and two other models being dropped from Alexander McQueen’s 2010 spring show in New York after they refused to wear his fa-

64 2beMag

mous lobster claw-inspired shoes with curved 25 cm heels because the girls believed they were dangerous. Despite the drawbacks Abbey Lee continues to charm the fashion world with her tattoos and piercings and is to this day one of the most coveted faces in the business. Since her start she has appeared in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Cover Girl, Decjuba, D&G, Gucci, H&M, Lord & Taylor, GAP, Chloe, Karl Lagerfeld and Ralph Lauren to name a few. She has also appeared in editorials and graced the covers of V Magazine, Dazed and Confused, Allure, Harpers Bazar, Numero, and last but not least Korean, Australian, Russian, Italian and Japanese Vogue. In March2010 it was announced that she will be the new face of Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear ad campaign. The news came after she closed the Chanel Spring Couture show and opened the Chanel Fall/Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear show. Abbey lives in Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and usually hangs out with other model friends such as Cathrine McNeil, Freja Beha and Karlie Kloss.

HITACHI’S EXTERNAL DOCKABLE HARD DRIVE Hitachi has released a new version of their famous external dockable hard drive. The brick is still there, but now it’s got a dock to slide into, and a little “friend” in the form of a removeable USB key if you just want to carry around a smaller percentage of the files. The drive’s designers have also gone beyond the physical form to incorporate a software package that displays your media in an on-screen 3D interface (on your computer monitor, not the drive itself)..

GHETTOBLASTER IPOD While modding old audio hardware to accept and play music from iPods is nothing new, finding something more unique is always a bit more difficult. aar_works_dsn took apart this classic 8-track player design and made it something all his own. Take a read of the full story behind this mod at aarn. It’s a one off but if you ask nicely, he may help you out.

CANON S90 The most impressive aspect of the Canon s90 design is the new Control Ring built around the lens, which can be set to control exposure (i.e. aperture or shutter speed), AE compensation, step zoom, manual focus and a selection of other functions. Finding a way of offering usable manual controls has proved surprisingly difficult for the normally ingenious designers of ultra compact cameras (although we’ve suggested a traditional ‘aperture ring’ like this on many occasions); this seemingly simple addition has a transformative effect on the utility of the S90’s extensive manual controls.

MUSICAL SHOWERS Fancy name aside, the Musical Showers are pretty simple: Customers plug their iPhone or iPod into a dock, and then they’re allowed to listen to their own music. Burger King installed them as part of a renewed “upscale” push to re-enter the Japanese market, which they had left for a while due to poor sales. Customers can listen to their music as loud as they want without disturbing other customers. It’s your own Fortress of Solitude, where you can slowly digest those 800 or so calories in peace.

Consolidated Talents

PROENZA SCHOULER Designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez met in 1998 while studying at New York’s Parson’s School of Design. At Parsons, the two became instant friends. While Hernandez supplemented his class work with the internship at Michael Kors, McCollough took a similar position at Marc Jacobs. During their senior years, they also worked together at United Bamboo and found that they were in agreement about the things that matter most to designers: silhouette, color, proportion. Due to that they got permission and decided to co-design a collection for their final thesis project. The name they came up with was Proenza Schouler - a moniker out of their mothers’ respective maiden names. The look Proenza Schouler showed at their graduation was glamorous yet hard, pared down to the essentials: a pencil skirt, a bolero jacket that hit right below the breast, and all of it in a palette of dirty pastels just right for a city summer. Peter D. Arnold, the head of the CFDA, (Council of Fashion Designers of America) saw the collection and was so impressed that he convinced Julie Gilhart, the fashion director for Barneys, to take a look at the collection. Julie Gilhart fell head over heels in love with the young duo’s sophisticated work, and even though Barneys buying season was officially over, she bought the whole

118 2beMag

collection. The duo borrowed some money from their parents and managed to produce the small run for the famous department store. Barneys asked for a spring collection as well. Hernandez and McCollough were worrying over how to produce it when a friend introduced them to a German venture capitalist who offered to back the label. A few other stores (Linda Dresner, Jeffrey) picked up on the buzz and bought that collection, too, even though they’d never had a proper show. In february of 2003 during fashion week they finally got their full runway show. The collection played with their now-signature ideas of proportion (shrunken pea coats, pencil skirts), color (browns, army greens, battleship grays), and silhouette (sleek, minimal)—clothes with the refinement of Narciso Rodriguez and the edge of Helmut Lang. That same year they were awarded the “Swarovski’s Perry Ellis Award for Ready-to-Wear,” which is annually given to an emerging talent at the CFDA’s annual fashion awards. The rest is history. It helps that Proenza Schouler’s talent matches their hype and that their collections showcase technical skills usually reserved for much older designers. Initially popular for its modern interpretation of bustiers and corsetry, the line features tailored coats

www.2bemag.com

in lush menswear pattern prints, sleek pencil skirts, color-blocked chiffon evening gowns cinched with satin belts, and tight, minimal silhouettes that often come in dark neutrals like bronze, battleship gray, and military green. Their greatest strength has always been their appreciation of the construction of clothes: the skilful tailoring, the linings, the seams—all are done perfectly, and that’s what makes them so successful. This modern luxury label offers an edgy, youthful take on upscale dressing. Many celebrities like for e.g. Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Demi Moore, Chloë Sevigny, Julianne Moore, and Kate Bosworth wear their pieces regularly. The design team of Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough—media darlings and self-proclaimed “dorks” has only been in business since 2002, but the duo has already enjoyed numerous hit collections, and a reputation as one of fashion’s most talked about labels. So let`s just face it, Proenza Schouler is here to stay and continue to “wow” their viewers.

Discovering Raw Talents

MARINA68 Rafel Oliva, born in Palma de Mallorca 1982 and Cristian Montesinos, born in Barcelona 1979 are two industrial designers that in year 2008 set up their own design studio in Barcelona called Marina 68. From the first moment on, the two designers have tried to find their own style, as well as trying to distance themselves from everything already established, looking for something genuine. In 2008 they presented their first collection at NUDE Habilitat Valencia, a collection of avant-garde furniture made out of cork, natural fibers, metal, wood, advanced upholstery, everything beautifully mixed together to create a series of furniture with a lot of character. Always fully committed to their personal style these two designers create very original work.

INTERVIEW

How did Marina 68 originate? It just happened, we were both just about to finish our studies and had made a bunch of prototypes so then one day we simply started to look into the financial situation, the industry, the craft and little by little after a couple of weeks of conversations the idea seemed more defined and really started to grow on us. At the same time the idea became a statement of intentions to protect the local product and ourselves, that really was the beginning of everything. How would you describe your work? Well you could say that we are a little mad as industrial designers should be, but generally we try to be as true to ourselves as possible, meaning that we have the all issues regarding ecology and the local industries under control, from there on our work always is an end result of tests and errors. Lately our work and ideas have originated from an independent platform, or association called “Surtido, a group of designers that just get together, have fun, and brainstorm/discuss about design. Can you describe us your creative process? Research +Analyze + Experiment and then just go for it until there is something that comes out that we actually like or until there’s only a couple of hours left until we have to hand in the product to the client. Whatever happens before... Hahaha usually both scenarios tend to come together somehow though!

As industrial designers, what do you think is the difference between design and art? There is a big difference between these two mediums, even though in a small but very visible sector of design you can consider art through very different point of views. So talking about this tiny sector of design, we could say that; the definition of art and design isn’t closed, like any other concept, art evolves with the culture and humanity, there’s nothing we can do about it. To some level it is disappointing that design has to adapt to a form of art, and not just be defined as design, the design is design and art is art even though some people like to think the opposite. Do you think that your work is more appreciated nationally or internationally? Even though we were finalists at the 2009 Injuve Awards we have hardly received any national publicity were they would talk about our work, but in the other hand we’ve had some pretty cool coverage in China and Korea, and we were even invited to show in an expo in Seoul. Do know a lot about the fashion world? Well now days you basically work in the same way with both fashion and industrial design, creating your brand and always be digging under stones for new opportunities, just so that you can create your own style and that you are visible online as much as possible.

What is the latest thing you guys have been doing? It’s called 7049 and it’s a chair made entirely out of bits of wood, the kind that anybody can buy in the local carpentry. It is part of a exhibition that takes place in the galley ”Otras Cosas de Villarosas” www.otrascosasdevillarrosas.com that you can visit during the period they’re showcasing the latest project “on the table”. And what will be your next project? At the moment we are just about to finish a first test for a pretty casual amorphous form with four legs, the bare minimum to create a chair.
