30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014 3
FROM THE EDITOR
Women make the world go ‘round. When you really step back and look at what one woman can take on, it’s pretty astounding. This issue is near and dear to my heart as we have so many amazing women filling up every page. Our cover girl Sarah Davidson is on the verge of a career explosion as she releases her debut EP and balances a prime-time role on TNT’s unscripted series Private Lives of Nashville Wives. While chasing her dreams, juggling everyday responsibilities and relationship challenges, this girl still manages to be poised, warm and endlessly chic. If you recall, we first met Sarah back at SWFW and who knew, what exciting things would be falling in to place for this deserving singer/songwriter. Read all about it in our “Hello Darlin’” interview. Another woman you will most likely be hearing lots more from is Abbi Glines, writer of the chick-lit Fallen Too Far series set in Rosemary Beach. The books have developed such a strong fanbase that rumors of a movie or TV show are even buzzing for the New York Times best-selling author. If you need a romantic beach read this spring featuring a southern heroine Blaire, Abbi’s e-books are ones you’ll want read. Along with Sarah and Abbi, who are taking a turn in the spotlight, the most fascinating type of woman to me is the everyday mom. Inspired by websites like The Glow and Vogue’s recent “Bonjour, Brooklyn” feature, I wanted to take the opportunity with 30A Street Style to show what the pursuit of balance looks like in South Walton. I’m so proud of this look at working mothers, showing the sweet moments that make long hours and career stress all worth it. For other moms out there, stay-at-home or working away, I hope you’ll read through and see what these ladies say about their take on achieve a balanced, quality life - in style, no less. It’s an everyday challenge and adventure, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.
Sincerely, Jami Ray

“Here’s the problem: I have so much stuff in my bag that it won’t fit in a purse! Instead, a sequin backpack is my go-to bag! During the spring and summer months, I always make sure to tote around a swimsuit so I can head straight to the beach after work! I am a huge advocate for using vintage scarves to hold my wind-blown hair and this 1970s scarf is one of my favorites. I love film cameras and the imperfect pictures they create. My go-to MAC lipstick in “style surge” and earrings are my favorite accessory so I carry a pair of Majestical Jewelry earrings because they match with every outfit! I love these little Japanese candies and always like to munch on something. I get headaches if I don’t! Nerd glasses for when I want to work like a boss. Business cards to spread the word! Neutrals and brights: Balance is key in this summer trend. I grew up in the 80s/early 90s so neon day-glow was a part of everyday life. I am a fan of nostalgia so why not bring it on back! (And no, am not talking lime fanny-packs and magenta scruncies.) If you opt for a bright pink lip, stick with a simple eye that consist of only a few coats of black mascara. Pair this makeup trend with a white maxi and camel tote for a fresh, modern day look. Great pop of color. Pair it with a basic black eyeliner and mascara. Gorgeous.

I know most people say wearing makeup to the beach is a crime. While I do agree that a look you would typically wear for a night on the town with your ladies probably isn’t the best idea for the sand, I do think there is a way to look “put together” without being overdone. Start with a tinted moisturizer containing SPF like Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer followed by one coat of mascara and finish the look with a bold lip stain. I love Loreal Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara and Nars Satin Lip Crayon in YuYu.
3
I will be the first to say that nor I or my style is sporty. However…I am absolutely loving the spin designers have been putting on this look. Whether it be a cropped sequin track pant, a pair of reinvented New Balance for Jcrew or a leopard baseball hat, these looks will bring what used to be just for the ball field to a night out on the town!

ABBI GLINES
we’ve got a
rush crush Thanks to Abbi Glines, that is. The Alabama writer who set her
fictional romance in Rosemary Beach, is seeing women young and, well, notso-young fall in love with Blaire, Rush and a cast of characters she dreamed up during a 30A vacation, propelling her to the top of Amazon, iTunes and Barnes & Noble top seller lists, even earning a placement on the New York Times best seller list. Fans are even petitioning for a TV show to be produced about the books. Could this be the next Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars? We recently chatted with Abbi to get the scoop. 40 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014
WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND? DID YOU ALWAYS PLAN TO BE AN AUTHOR OR HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THIS CAREER? I’ve known since I was nine years old that I would write books one day. It was my dream and main goal in life I filled notebooks full of stories for years. Then life got in the way I graduated high school in 1995 from a private Christian school in North Alabama. One year after graduation I transferred to Faulkner State so I could live near my fiancé. I managed to complete two years of college before we started our family. Kids changed everything. I did freelance for several parenting and family magazines and the Mobile Press Register. When my youngest started kindergarten I decided it was time for me to write that book. So I did. That was four years ago. THIS STRETCH OF BEACH TOWN IS OFTEN CONSIDERED A BEST KEPT SECRET. HOW DID YOU FIRST MAKE THE ACQUAINTANCE OF 30A AND ROSEMARY BEACH SPECIFICALLY? We have always loved 30A. Typically we would find ourselves staying in Seaside when we visited. However, in the spring of 2012 we went with friends to Rosemary Beach for Spring Break. They assured us we would love it, which of course we did. While staying in one of the quaint little beach cottages along the water, I outlined the idea for the first book in the series. I never imagined it would be more than one book. I just liked the setting of Rosemary Beach and decided I would take my own fictional liberties with the town. Fallen Too Far became my first New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. I never in a million years expected that kind of reaction from the book. Because of the reader response, I wrote a sequel and when that book soared to number one on the New York Times list, I decided this would be a series. Readers loved the characters and storyline. YOU’VE SAID YOU WROTE THE BOOK WHILE VACATIONING IN ROSEMARY BEACH. CAN YOU PAINT THE PICTURE OF WHAT THAT VACATION LIKE TO INSPIRE SUCH IDYLLIC ROMANCE? The cottage we had rented for the week overlooked the water. I sat out on the patio and brainstormed while watching the people on the beach. When I needed a break from the outlining, I would walk down to the Sugar Shak and get an ice-cream. I loved soaking in the area and the way of life in the town. Rosemary Beach isn’t a typical tourist location and it’s a more luxurious experience than most coastal spots. I liked the upscale feel and the idea of a famous rocker’s son living among this laid back lifestyle intrigued me. The idea grew from there. WHAT GAVE YOU THE INITIAL IDEAS ABOUT THE RUSH AND BLAIRE, THEIR PERSONALITIES AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? INSPIRED BY REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES? I wanted to throw a southern country girl into the world of
the wealthy and privileged. She would be tough but she’d have to be desperate to even consider staying among this people who lived so differently than she did. Writing Blaire was easy. I knew her. I knew several “Blaires” actually. I grew up in the area Blaire called home. Sumit, Alabama isn’t a city but Sumiton, Alabama is. Sumiton is not only my hometown but also the inspiration for Sumit. Writing Rush was more difficult. He was jaded and hard. He’d lived a life I wasn’t familiar with and I had my work cut out for me with research. I didn’t want him to fall hard and fast for the girl so completely different from him. I wanted it to be something that was a slow burn. He had too many walls she’d have to break down first. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO FIND YOUR NAME ON THE NYT BESTSELLER LIST AND #1 ON AMAZON? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ACCOLADES YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I write a “Goals List” every New Years Day. In 2012 I had written several goals down and on December 26 I read them and realized I’d accomplished them all but one. I hadn’t made the New York Times bestseller list I knew the next day that my agent would get the list and she’d know if I made it or not. The call never came. I won’t lie, I was devastated. I was so sure after hitting #1 on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and iTunes that I would have made the New York Times. That Saturday morning I was woken up by my Twitter going crazy and sending my iPhone into a frenzy. I grabbed it to see what the fuss was about and that’s when I saw all the congratulations for hitting the New York Times list at #7. I think I cried for two entire days. I couldn’t stop crying. It was monumental for me and my writing career. On a side note my agent felt awful about this. She was in Australia visiting her son that week and didn’t know that no one called me from her office. I’m glad I didn’t get that call early. It was two days before the new year when I found out I’d met every goal on my list Since then I’ve been interviewed by USA Today, The New York Times and I’ve had over eight New York Times and Wall Street Journal best sellers. I’ve had over thirteen USA Today bestsellers. My books have been translated in over twenty different countries and still weekly I get a call from my agent about new foreign offers. I am humbled and amazed daily by the success of my books. WHEN YOU STARTED THE BOOK, DID YOU PLAN FOR A SERIES OR DID THE STORY JUST TURN INTO ONE THAT NEEDED MORE PAGES TO TELL THE STORY? When I began Fallen Too Far it was supposed to be a standalone book that was a break for me before I went back to my established series Sea Breeze. However, as I made my way to the end of the story an idea hit me and I decided I was going to end this book with a heartbreaking scene because no one expected that of me. Then I would write a sequel with this other idea I had for the couple. With the second book readers fell in love with a side character named Woods Kerrington. So I gave him a book
30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014 41
ABBI GLINES
then I gave him two. Then readers wanted a book for Grant Carter. The list is endless now and I honestly don’t know when I will be done writing about these characters in Rosemary Beach. THERE HAS BEEN AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITH FAN SITES, APPAREL AND MORE ALREADY DEDICATED TO THE CHARACTERS YOU DREAMED UP. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE FANS TAKE SUCH OWNERSHIP AND INTEREST OVER SOMETHING YOU CREATED? It completely blows my mind. I never intended to have things like tee shirts made up for characters in my books but readers asked me to so I decided I would try it at an event last June. I only took twenty shirts that said “I have a Rush Crush” and they sold out in five minutes. People were then begging me for more. This led to having to build a store online for the shirts. I actually see people wearing my shirts. I saw someone in Disneyland when I visited with one of my “ I Love Woods” shirts on and then while in Atlanta, Georgia I saw someone wearing one of my “Cage Groupie” shirts. My store sells hundreds of shirts a month. This kind of thing isn’t what I imagined when I started writing. I love it but it isn’t at all how I thought it would be. WE’VE SEEN SO MANY REQUESTS BY FANS FOR THE SERIES TO BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE OR TV SHOW WITH FANS PUTTING TOGETHER COUNTLESS YOUTUBE VIDEOS OF THEIR DREAM CAST WITH EVERYONE FROM LIAM HEMSWORTH, EMMA ROBERTS, GABRIELLA WILDE AND HAYDEN PANETTIERE ON THE LIST. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE IDEAS AND WHO IS ON YOUR DREAM LIST (BUDGETS AND AVAILABILITY ASIDE!)? I don’t have a dream list as far as characters go. I would want new fresh faces. I wouldn’t want to associate my characters with someone else because of the actors. However, I don’t want a movie for this series. There is too much story with these characters. It needs a television series. I’m holding out for that. Movie options aren’t something I am entertaining right now. I want that television show! WHICH CHARACTER THROUGHOUT THE SERIES DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? Blaire simply because she doesn’t appear tough until she needs to be, then everyone better run for cover. YOU’VE SAID YOU WRITE THINGS YOUR GRANDMOTHER CAN’T READ. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF
42 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014
WRITING AND INCLUDING THOSE REAL-LIFE DETAILS THAT ADD TO THE STORY? My writing is realistic. I don’t sugar coat things. When I decided to write in alternating point of views I knew being in a man’s head was tricky. Men do not think like women. I was terrified to write the sexier scenes when I first started because I was sure I’d get kicked out of my church and possibly Fairhope, Alabama where I live. But I sucked it up and did it. I wrote it exactly like I thought it should be described without pretty words just real ones. It worked. It worked really well. Much better than I imagined. My mother on the other hand was appalled but has managed to get over it. My books have a storyline that has nothing to do with sex. They have real life issues and there are twists you don’t see coming. TURNING TO FASHION, CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE GOTO SPRING/SUMMER OUTFITS FOR SOME OF THE MAIN FEMALE CHARACTERS? Blaire - Sundresses. Above the knee and spaghetti straps. Floral and light. Bethy - Very short shorts and tank tops. Possibly with a pair of heels. Nan - Chanel’s newest spring fashion with a vintage Hermes bag then of course a pair of Jimmy Choo sandals WHAT BOOKS ARE ON YOUR MUST-READ LIST THIS SEASON? Breakable by Tammara Webber Beautiful Oblivion by Jamie McGuire Fall From India Place by Samantha Young ANY ADVICE TO ASPIRING WRITERS? Write everyday. Even when it isn’t good because you can delete it tomorrow. Listen to critique. Don’t be too proud to accept someone’s advice. Know that if you love your words someone else will too. If they bore you... they will bore others. Don’t write stuff just for filler space. If it isn’t interesting write something else that is. ANYTING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD? I’ve often wondered over the past year if anyone in Rosemary Beach even realized I existed. I wasn’t sure if this series had reached their ears. I’m honored to have a chance to talk about how this series came to be and the inspiration behind it. So, thank you. It was fun. FOR THOSE JUST DISCOVERING ALL OF THE SERIES, DO YOU HAVE A PREFERRED ORDER FOR READING THROUGH? Yes. The Rosemary Beach series is like watching a television series. You don’t just follow the couple in the book you are reading but their friends also have things happen around them that leads to future books. They need to be read in order. Fallen Too Far --> Never Too Far --> Twisted Perfection --> Forever Too Far --> Simple Perfection --> Take A Chance --> One More Chance (releases September 2). Also, Rush Too Far releases May 6 and it is Fallen Too Far told in Rush’s point of view. It can be read after Fallen or after Forever Too Far.

hello,
darlin’
Say howdy to singer/songwriter Sarah Davidson With a brand new EP, role onTNT’s unscripted series Private Lives of Nashville Wives and a penchant for coolgirl style, this Georgia peach is one to watch. Y’all, the girl is on fire. Q. We first met you back in October at South Walton Fashion Week and were immediately drawn to your style. A lot has happened since then. How do you describe your life right now with the upcoming release of your self-titled EP, a television show and a devoted fan base closely following your every outfit? Life is so exciting and fast paced for me right now and I’m loving every minute. I’m so honored to be able to live a life that is based around my true passions. I feel like the luckiest girl on earth to be able to share my music and story with people and its so rewarding for me to connect with the people that “get” me and my music. I’m a really open person and always have had a “more the merrier” mentality so naturally I love to share any style and beauty tricks that I have picked up through my time on the road and in front of the cameras! Q. How have your fashion and music influences changed over the years? Are there any style choices you want to erase from your past? Any absolute favorite outfits?
I grew up in south Georgia so my style was a little more “southern belle” when I first moved to Nashville but over time I have embraced the influence that Nashville has on both my music and my fashion. A style choice that I want to erase is probably ACM honors 2011 I wore an hombre royal blue and black skirt but wore black tights underneath...it was so confusing and was just not a good look! One of my favorite looks was at the CMT awards last summer. I adored that Sass + Bide sequin dress! Q. Do you have a woman crush on anyone in music or fashion right now? I have a massive girl crush on Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town. She has a one of a kind badass sense of style and knows exactly who she is and that is so refreshing. And she loves fabulous boots and leather fringe. Thats a woman after my own heart! In the fashion world I have to say I a massive crush on one of my best friends and a 30a regular, Cassie Kelley of Womanista style and beauty blog. Her style is impeccable, classy, and fashion forward... AND I love to raid her closet:-) Q. What about this EP gets you so excited? The fact that people are responding so positively is so huge for me. I want to personally hug every person that buys a song of mine because they are supporting my dreams and are helping fulfill my lifelong dreams. The opportunity to make this EP is exciting enough...but the fact that it will be available at Wal-Mart and iTunes for people to go buy is a dream come true. I grew up perusing the CD aisle at Wal-Mart in my hometown of Valdosta, GA so its just so cool to know I can walk in there and pick it up off the shelves. Q. Where do you picture people listening to these songs? I think this EP has such an organically coastal feel...the whole time we were in the studio we all collectively felt that it makes us want to drive down an open coastal road with the windows down. 30a would be the perfect spot to crank it up, and roll em down!

SARAH DAVIDSON - HELLO DARLIN’
Q. How do you describe your music style and your fashion style? Are they complementary or do you have different style personas? My musical style is laid back and organic feeling but based around the telling of a story. My style in the same way is very relaxed and “thrown together” feeling but with special touches that tell a story. I love the juxtaposition of low maintenance meets glam. I feel that best describes who I am. Q. We’ve seen you in a variety of looks and styles. What designers and clothing lines do you gravitate toward? I love fabulous fun patters like ones by Mary Katrantzou. I’m really into Ash combat boots, or any combat boot for that matter! Waxed Leggings by JBrand and Hudson, anything by 3.1Philip Lim, Isabel Marant, Rag & Bone, Helmut Lang, or Vince. Leather leather leather! I love Wildfox for perfectly kitsch beachside wear. A Luli Fama bathing suit looks fabulous on every figure and I can’t wait to check out the spring suit selection at Ophelia and Willow! Q. What has been the best part and the hardest part of being part of / filming / promoting Private Lives? The best part of filming was being able to connect with five other very kind, strong, opinionated, and different women. I expected that the women would be a little caddy but everyone has been so incredibly supportive of my music and have been there for me through all of my life changes and challenges. It has been such a blessing to have added such a strong group of support in my life. The most challenging part about it would have to be opening up about my divorce. I took some time off from filming and did a lot of reflecting and I walked away with the quote by Julia Cameron that ultimately led me to continue with the show “Your own healing is the greatest message of hope for others.” I wanted to share that even though we aren’t all perfect we can still have hope. Q. So many singer / songwriters have looked forward to hearing a song on the radio. How does it feel to have yours on television as well? It’s really surreal to hear my songs on TV and to have written and recorded the title track of the show. Every time it comes on I get all giddy and smiley. I feel silly, but I have wanted a song on the radio or TV for so long and to finally hear it is just too much. I’m so grateful! I hope they start to play photos at left courtesty Turner Broadcasting photo at right by Jillian Hughes 46 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014

Nordstrom “drama” floppy hat, Wildfox Le Femme Deluxe sunglasses in pastel blue, US Magazine, Caudalie beauty elixir to stay moisturized and refreshed!
Q. Can you share a few on-the-go beauty tips? A perfect on the go powder sunscreen is a must have and it doesn’t irritate your eyes in the summer heat. I love Ole Henrikson vitamin c cleansing cloths to give your skin a refreshing kick of vit c and take off your makeup. Plus, they are so easy to throw in your carry-on. A side braid or top knot are both really quick and easy hairstyles that will take your look from beach to babe in minutes.
it on the radio more! Q. Spring is the perfect time of year for new beginnings and fresh starts. What about this season has your name written all over it? Spring is my favorite season! The flowers are blooming and the patios are open! Spring is all about getting outside, enjoying the warmer weather, and of course, a girls weekend getaway to 30A! Q. Aside from your own, what other music is on your current spring playlist? I’m loving Charlie Worsham’s whole album, everything Lady Antebellum, Imagine Dragons, John Mayer, Coldplay, “I Make My Own Sunshine” by Alyssa Bonagura is my springtime must. And I love that new Pharell song “Happy”. I can’t help but dance to that! Q. When did you start visiting 30A and how did you hear about the area? I am from Valdosta GA so I grew up going to Destin and Panama City beaches. I remember being a young girl and driving down 30a and there was literally nothing! Its crazy to see how much it has grown. I just love everything about the beachside lifestyle on 30a. Tres chic! Q. What makes the perfect beach trip, in your book? A perfect 30a beach trip starts with a fabulous caftan, straw clutch, and the perfect bikini. Me and my very best girlfriends hopping on the ever so convenient 1 hour Southwest flight from Nashville to ECP, heading straight to George’s for a glass of Spy Valley Sav Blanc, dropping our bags at the house and hopping on our bikes, and heading straight for the beach! Next we watch the sunset at Bud n’

Q. You are definitely on a roll! What’s next on your list? Whew! I don’t know whats next! I kind of decided that I’m going to leave that up to God. I was spending a lot of time focusing on the past and the future and I realized that I need to be here, in this moment and get everything done that I need to get done right now to the best of my ability. I’m feeling blessed that I get to make music and the fact that people get to hear it is just icing! I’m currently on a radio tour to play my single “Drink You Up”, I will for sure be writing music and taking it out on the road to play shows for anyone that will listen! --JR SARAH’S SELF-TITLED EP IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES AS WELL AS IN WAL-MART, WHICH INCLUDES AN EXCLUSIVE BONUS SONG, “BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY,” THE TITLE TRACK DAVIDSON WROTE AND RECORDED FOR TNT’S UNSCRIPTED SERIES PRIVATE LIVES OF NASHVILLE WIVES.”

BELLINIS & BIKINIS
O
phelia Swimwear’s Bellinis & Bikinis: refreshing, revealing and rejuvenating
the pieces are as vibrant as they are functional. The Spring/ Summer 2014 line was inspired by Monica’s travels to the sugary sand and warm waters of the Caribbean. These are definitely not your typical bathing suits!
A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending one of the most alluring events in the area, Bellinis & Bikinis. Local swimsuit retailer Ophelia Swimwear officially welcomed spring by inviting us to an afternoon of delicious cocktails paired with bikini wearing models. The event took place at V Seagrove restaurant and I cannot imagine a better place to enjoy the amazing display of beautiful bathing suits. Chilled bellinis with friends, bikinis, and sunset... Fabulous way to end an already splendid day.
While I usually prefer to wear bikinis, for some reason I fell in love with the “Felicity” one piece suit. I guess the beautiful light blue color and bohemian vibe transported me to a relaxing beach. This suit provides the perfect balance between sophistication and playful. I loved how by adding gold accessories the colors came alive and made it the perfect combination. One of my favorite bikinis was the “Double Take” in denim color. It has beautiful gold stitching detailing around the bust and waist. Best thing of it all? It’s reversible! Yes, you can either wear the denim colored side or reverse to a lovely light green. Two bikinis in one with mix and match option? Yes, please!
The runway included pretty much everything necessary to make your beach day a perfect one. Bikinis, one piece bathing suits, cover ups, gorgeous jewelry, and, my most favorite accessory, glittering body tattoos! Most of the featured pieces on the show were from the L*Space Swimwear by Monica Wise collection. If you are not familiar with L*Space you are missing out big time. Her designs have an amazing variety of styles and colors. All
For the ultimate fashionista girl out there the “Celestial” print bikini is a must try. The colors are stunning and the fringe top makes it look stylish and fun. This is the bathing suit that screams “I’m ready for some fun, come join me!” Kudos to the Ophelia’s glam squad for making this piece look even better by accessorizing it so well. The 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014 53
NICOLE PALOMA

combination of feathers on the hair along with the long necklace and Flash Tattoos got this bikini to the “statement outfit” level. One of my favorites looks of the night as well. The runway included an interesting twist on the classic black bikini. Delicate crochet inserts on the sides of a “boyshort” shaped bottom took the piece from plain to pretty cool. The combination of accessories and unusual shaped bikini gave an edgy look to a bathing suit that otherwise could’ve seen as boring. But let’s face it, the ladies from Ophelia did a magnificent job pairing all the pieces together to offer us a show full of options and glamour. Next Step? Stopping by Ophelia Swimwear to let my inner beach goddess blossom. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mara developed a sense of style and an eye for all things fashion at a very young age. Strong influences include the ‘70s fashion revolution, pop art & culture, Harper’s Bazaar, along with a sense of practicality that is essential to make it all come together. She loves all things Mod wear, and has a strange fascination for “boho chic” trends. Mara is active in media and advertising, and is mother to two always perfectly dressed kids, of course. With a “fashion is my passion” life mantra, the Wear in Destin. fashion blogger brings to you the best of finds in the area along with tips and tricks on how to embrace the little fashionista in you. Working moms have a lot on their plate. Along with things like presentations, monthly reports and P&L statements are mental notes about packing lunches, potty-training, after-school activities and finding that favorite stuffed animal that mysteriously disappeared. As any mom will share, i’s not easy. Brief moments of sheer insanity can occur, followed by triumphs large and small. It is truly the heart-melting moments that make it all worthwhile. The fact that we are lucky enough to experience it all with the rich, colorful background of 30A makes it that much sweeter. 30A Street Style takes a closer look at what the pursuit of balance looks like for working moms around South Walton.
jennifer & rowan
WHO? Jennifer Steele, Executive Director for the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County and mom to Cale, 18 and Rowan, 7 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? My kids and I are fortunate to have been in Grayton Beach all of our lives. Our favorite thing to do is play in the sand and water at Grayton. We don’t get to the beach as much as we would like to, but when we do, we make it count! FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? Travel - especially during the busy season here on 30A; It’s nice to get away for a long weekend, but I always appreciate coming home. FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? I am fortunate that I have a job that allows me to work from home when I need to; I try to be home before Rowan gets off the bus, and I love that routine - hearing the bus pull up, watching him walk down the driveway and say “Hi, Mama!” It is a sweet part of my day. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? Eclectic; I enjoy pairing casual and elegant pieces. I love vintage finds especially blouses and handbags. I think the beach provides us all with some relaxed freedom that we wouldn’t have if we were in a city. For example, wearing a sun dress and flip flops to work, which I often do during the summer. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? My parenting style has definitely evolved. I would say I’m hands-on but not hovering. I think I’m pretty relaxed, but Rowan tells me I’m the mean parent and I’m okay with that! FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? I like to buy blazers for Rowan because he loos so cute in them when he throws one on with jeans and a t-shirt. He wore a blazer in his kindergarten school picture and I laugh every time I look at it and joke that it is his first campaign photo. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MOM MAKE YOU BETTER OR STRONGER? Working full time makes me appreciate the time I do have with my kids and it makes me aware of what my priorities really should be. BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? My advice to myself and to all moms is don’t feel guilty when you can’t be the best at everything. It’s impossible to give 100% to yourself, your kids, your relationship and your job all the time. RECENT THING THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? Rowan tells people I am famous because I run the CAA, which gives a real laugh to my staff. It makes me happy that he is proud of me and my work. On Jennifer: Skirt by Zara; shirt by J. Crew; shoes by Saks Fifth Avenue; earrings by Rock Hard Designs; pendant by Judith March On Rowan: Pants, shirt and tie by J. Crew
makenzie & campbell
WHO? Makenzie Carter, Marketing Director for The Seaside Style and mom to Campbell, 2 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? We love to go to the beach and play on the Seaside playground. Campbell loves the swings! FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? Getting manicures and pedicures. FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? Picking Campbell up from school is my favorite part of the day. She is always so excited to see me and it means my work day is (somewhat) over. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? Classic with a little bit of prep. 90% of my wardrobe is from J.CREW if that says anything. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? I would like to think that I’m a warm and nurturing mom that also believes in fair and consistent discipline. FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? Seaside t-shirts (of course), inexpensive shorts & leggings, cotton dresses and TOMS in every color! And if I’m being honest… the smocked auctions on Facebook get me every time! HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? “Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had, and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.” ~Linda Wooten BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Have a glass of wine and go to bed early. ;-) RECENT THING THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? Campbell grabbed my face and said, “You’re perfect, just the way you are.” On Makenzie: J. Crew dress, Jack Rogers sandals from Perspicasity On Campbell: Gap Kids
erika, sloane & whitney
WHO? Erika Powell, Owner of Urban Grace Interiorsand mom to Sloane, 4 and Whitney, 10 months FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? We love the beach and ice cream or snowcones in Seaside! The playground at Padgett Park is also a favorite, the splash pad in the summer lots of fun. FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? Leisurely bike ride or dinner out with friends. FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? Picking Sloane up from preschool, as a working mom, there is just something so comforting about being reunited with your child. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? I gravitate towards what is comfortable... let’s call it “comfortable chic”, so I don’t sound like a grandma. I want to be able to come home from work and play in the backyard with my babies without the fear of wrinkling my dress. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? Oh goodness... I don’t know... maybe you should ask my husband this one. ;) I hope I’m lots of fun, with just enough disciplinarian in me.... that will eventually result in two wellrounded, sensitive, caring children. FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? Shoes! Sloane (4.5) has recently expressed interest in fashion, so together we have been searching Zappos for the most colorful tennis shoes and the coolest cowgirl boots. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? I’m getting better about setting boundaries and I think because my time is split between work and home this
30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 59
has been easier to do. BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Give yourself grace, don’t let the guilt of working or the guilt of being at home creep up on you... it’ll steal your joy and not allow you to be fully present wherever you are. RECENT THING THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? Last night I got a “you’re the best momma in the whole world”... I also love picking Sloane up from school and seeing that she spent her free time writing everyone in our family’s name on a piece of paper complete with little hearts all over. On Erika: Sam & Lavi top from Willow, Lucky Jeans Charlotte Kick Flair, Sam Edelman shoes, vintage bracelets On Sloane: Carter’s dress On Whitney: Feather Baby Top, Ralph Lauren leggings
cindy, barron, mae & walter
WHO? Cindy Krutz, co-owner of Willow Boutique and mom to Barron, 6, twins Mae and Walter, 3 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? Going Watersound Beach Club and play in the pool and go to the beach. FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? I get facials regularly. FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? Coming home in the afternoon to everyone screaming with excitement Mama. Warms my heart! HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? I would say modern classic. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? I am actually pretty hard on my kids and want them to grow up respectful and hard working. FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? I love Mae in tunics w/ bloomers (love showing off her legs) and for my boys, I put them in shorts with a pattern or stripe with a collard shirt. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? Since I am not with them all day everyday, I feel like I am more attentive and enjoy them more with the time I have with them. BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Mine would be to try and not always have guilt and to remember you are doing the best you can. RECENT THING THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? Mae has fallen in love with clothes and is always wanting to come with me to work. On Cindy: Rebecca Taylor dress from Willow On Walter: Havacoa swim shorts and shirt On Mae: coverup from Gigi’s Fab Kids On Barron: Puro Panno swim shorts, Johnnie O shirt from Fitz & Emme
rebecca, lake & georgia
WHO? Rebecca Balkcom, Owner of Bountiful Creative and mom to Lake, 2 and Georgia, 1 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? Strolling from our house in Old Seagrove to Seaside to visit Modica Market on weekend mornings for a chicken biscuit, comraderie with the locals, lunch at Barefoot Barbecue where Lake and Georgia indulge in Murph’s Mac and Cheese, a romp on the beach chasing Seagulls, followed with a mad dash to the Seaside Playground to exert some boundless energy before naptime. FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? I love going to Sundog and perusing new fiction and memoirs just for ME…without the kids in tow. Add a long hot bath for the setting to enjoy my new book and that is my ultimate “me time” escape! FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? I would say waking my children up or putting them
60 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014
to bed, but right now we’re dealing with the escape artist otherwise known as “Houdini” coming into our bed so I get the benefit of snuggling with him all night. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? I love wearing skinny jeans with signature patterned flowing tops and luxurious scarves paired with my signature jewelry collection from my husband….Gold bangles from Garden and Gun’s “Made in the South” designer of the year Christina Jervey paired with the timeless necklaces from Mary James Jewelry in Nashville and Blessings in Disguise found at Mercantile. I love keeping my clothes simple and adding jewelry as a statement. I need to be able to move quickly and to chase toddlers through the streets of Seaside! HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? Remember everything you said you would never do when you had a child? I’ve done every…single…one…of those things. I turn a blind eye to my dusty ceiling fans so I can spend my limited time cuddling and giggling with Lake and Georgia in our bed, free playtime on the floor and trying not to let the day-to-day routine creep into indulging them with sheer love and laughter. FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? I always envisioned smocked frocks with monograms. Now my kids (as young as they are) dictate their dress. I’ve learned quickly that my kids’ have their own style and that’s empowering to shape them into who they will become Georgia wears lots of color and pieces that are comfortable. She will thank me one day for not adorning her head with trendy headbands and bows. (No offense to mothers who do!) HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? I had my children later in life so I don’t miss or regret anything, but I am challenged to step up my energy level to keep up with their rigorous schedule while balancing my clients’ needs. It makes me throw all of my so-called “plans” out the window and focus on the present. I am stronger in that all I have to do is make it through one day to the next…something to which I am sure other mothers can relate. So fortunate to have a husband who reminds me of this daily and supports my endeavors while being an equal partner/parent! BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? You truly cannot do everything. Work with people you love, throw yourself into your career giving it your all, then turn off all devices when you are back on “mom time.” Be honest with yourself about your work load with not just regard to balance for your husband and children, but also balance for yourself to recharge batteries and come back to work and family with a healthy dose of inspiration and vigor. RECENT THING YOUR KID DID OR SAID THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? Mommy, I lubb you. You are buuuutiful! On Rebecca: blouse from Mercantile On Lake and Georgia: outfits from Duckie’s
jami & emery
WHO? Jami Ray, Owner of Outright Social and 30A Street Style and mom to Emery, 3 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? We love to mix it up. Wandering through Rosemary Beach with a treat from the Sugar Shak or blowing bubbles on the green is a favorite as well as taking Emery to ballet in Seaside and finding a quiet place on the sand in Blue Mountain Beach. FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? Quiet shopping trips where I can take my time to browse are really relaxing. And every woman needs a pedicure with a good foot massage! FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? There is something about the morning routine and getting out the door that is always an adventure. The sweetest
moments are usually right before bed, when I snuggle with Emery to tuck her in and we say her prayers. Even with a lot on my mind, I can shut down long enough to enjoy and really take in every little smile and story she has. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? I am obsessed with anything black and white. I like bright color, oddball patterns and graphic styles that are easy but still look put together. I’m not usually one to wear frilly ruffles or flats. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? I try to be as sweet as I can while still creating boundaries - if that’s possible. The days might be long, but the years will fly by and I know I’ll want some of these moments back. I try not to take the little things so seriously and take full opportunity to be silly and laugh with Emery. FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? My bright color, black and white love has continued to kids clothing. I try to buy pieces that are like regular clothes - no characters, no slogans - just kid-size versions of dresses, blouses, shorts and accessories. I never got into the smocked and monogrammed look. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? I’ve found that I have become much more assertive and efficient. I realize how valuable time outside of work is, so I make the most of working hours and knock out as much as I can. I’ve learned to say no more often and really focus on quality projects I am passionate about. BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Compartmentalize! You can’t be successful doing everything at once. There has to be some separation to really make the most out of work time and play. I try to be more hands-free and not have a phone in one hand. RECENT THING THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? When Emery grabs my hand to interlace our fingers, my heart melts. The other day she said, “I’ll tell you everything you ever need to know because we are best friends. Right, mommy?” On Jami: Karlie dress from Willow, Philip Lim for Target bag, Nine West wedges On Emery: Old Navy top and sandals, crochet shorts from Fitz & Emme
wesleyann, brayden & liam
WHO? Wesleyann Knetzer, Owner of Dear Wesleyann Photography and mom to Brayden, 5 and Liam, 3 FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? Between riding bikes, ice cream from the Sugar Shack, playing at the Fonville Press playground in Alys Beach and concerts at the Seaside Amphitheater....30A is like a dream for my boys! FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? Since most my time is spent in a dark room sitting in front of a computer, I love nothing more than stepping out into the sunshine and strolling the streets of Rosemary and Seaside, grabbing coffee at Amavida and popping into al the little boutiques to shop! FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? I’d be lying if I didn’t say my morning coffee. My schedule is rather crazy and never seems to be the same...but my coffee....that my daily constant! HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? functional and fashionable. But like I said...I sit in a dark room most days...so yoga pants are my primary attire!! HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? I’m a pretty laid back person who is used to just rolling with it and my parenting is rather similar. Even though little boys can be a handful, they’re pretty easy! While I don’t let a lot get to me, I do expect my boys to be obedient, respectful, kind, always put others first, treat others as they would want to be treated, and to belly laugh often! FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONES? My boys, ironically enough, love clothes! My oldest actually asks to go shopping for clothes. Their style tends to be like little men...lots of skinny jeans, button ups, and layered
clothing, Their closet are packed full with clothes from H&M crewcuts, GAP and the more practical Target and Old Navy. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? I absolutely adore my job! My career as a photographer allows me to chase after my passion for creativity, satisfy my love for travel, and challenges me daily by the constant changing. Because I’m able to do what fuels me and brings joy, I feel as though it allows me to have a balance in life as a creative, female individual, as a wife, and as mother. I want to be an example for my boys with my career as well as in my marriage. There is definitely a lot of “mommy guilt” that comes with a double role as a working mom because you want to give your all in every area. My prayer is that my boys, first and foremost, know that they are loved wholeheartedly, but that they have a mother who is driven and passionate about what she does and that with hard work, determination, and even a few tears, you’re able to achieve your dreams! BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Don’t be afraid to ask for help and let go sometimes! Business and balance has been my quest for this year in order to put my family first. I’ve realized that in order to have a life outside of work, I have had to learn that I can’t do it all and I can’t do it all on my own! Oh...and that it’s ok to say “no” sometimes :) RECENT THING YOUR KID DID OR SAID THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? The daily morning hugs, kisses, and “i love yous” are a constant reminder that it’s all worth it!! On Wesleyann: Banana Republic Dress On Brayden and Liam: J. Crew crewcuts

WHO? Celia Tucker, co-owner of Willow Boutique and mom to Huxley, 18 months FAVORITE THING TO DO ON 30A WITH THE KIDS? We love to ride bikes to the Farmer’s Market in Seaside on Saturdays. FAVORITE “ME TIME” INDULGENCE TO BALANCE MOMMY LIFE? When my husband brings early morning coffee to me in bed before the crazy life with a toddler begins. FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A WORKING MAMA? Just those days when I feel like I am contributing to my family. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLOTHING STYLE? Beach chic. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MOM/PARENTING STYLE? Oh gosh...I am not sure yet. I am actually more laid-back than I thought I would be, but still controlling. I’ll probably be the most strict mom on the block. That’s for sure! FAVORITE CLOTHING/STYLE ITEMS TO BUY THE LITTLE ONE? Well I am a true Southerner so I love a sweet smocked John John or a bubble. While he’s a baby, I’ll dress him like a baby.... because before I know it, he will be asking for some Levi’s and Patagonia. HOW DOES BEING A WORKING MAMA MAKE YOU BETTER/ STRONGER? Everything about it...independence, growing thicker skin, learning to be a mentor/role model for my employees, leadership skills, confidence, people skills, patience. Everything about my job...the good, the bad and the ugly makes me a stronger person. I hope one day that Hux, my son, will be proud that his mom started and owned her own businesses. BEST ADVICE TO BUSY MOMS TRYING TO BALANCE IT ALL? Stop and take it all in every day. Be thankful and proud of yourself and your family. RECENT THING YOUR KID DID OR SAID THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE? This morning we were watching Mickey and crawled up in my lap and laid his head down and just cuddled up and keep saying “momma momma.” On Celia: Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent dress, Rag & Bone hat, Karbn necklace, Willow signature Love necklace On Hux: Vintage pants

Keep your preventive screenings current. Are your pap, mammogram, thyroid, and cholesterol screening tests current? Screening recommendations are based on an individual’s risk factors. Your doctor will consider your personal health, family history and medications to determine which tests are needed and how often to order them.
2
To examine anything new on your body. Whether it is a bump, rash, color change, pain, whatever, if it’s new, have it evaluated. It may be a perfectly benign change, but it might not. Even if someone has told you in the past that it’s normal, if it changes, have it looked at again.
3
To maintain a healthy sex life. Yes, this is extremely important! Every woman should be able to enjoy a healthy sex life throughout her lifetime. If you are having pain during intercourse, dryness, decreased libido or any other issues, ask! There is no reason to be embarrassed and so much to gain from discussing your concerns.

reasons to see your OB/GYN now
4
Discuss Contraception. An unplanned pregnancy changes your life, and most of the pregnancies in our country are still unplanned. So discuss contraception. With so many options available to you today—condoms, pills, rings, patches, implants, injections, sterilization and of course abstinence— you can find something that fits your needs. If you choose not to use contraception, ask your doctor what you should be doing to keep yourself healthy in case of pregnancy.
5
Discuss supplements. Women are inundated with advertisements for pills and products, and some of those can be very tempting. Always ask your healthcare provider before starting anything new, even over-thecounter products.

@seasidecrewlife What inspired you to start to @seasidecrewlife?
I have been a Seaside-lover my entire life. My grandmother and her husband built a condo in Seagrove before Seaside was ever developed. There was nothing besides her condo and the beach for miles. When Seaside was developed, my family fell in love and I have not missed a summer since. I always wanted there to be an account that had super neat photos from Seaside, a way for me to get my fix of home away from home. One day, I decided I would make one myself. So I did. And three years later, here we are, 136,000+ followers later. This selfie is the first time anyone has ever seen my face associated with the account! Aah!
Why do you think people are so fascinated with the account?
30A is a phenomenal place. It really is. It offers the nations most beautiful, clear and white beaches along with the most beautiful seaside towns the world could offer. People LOVE everything about 30A. It is such a family-friendly area and it is like a slice of paradise for everyone. People really enjoy seeing photos taken in Seaside because whether they are in the office all day working or drowning in reality, they get a little glimpse of home away from home.
76 30A STREET STYLE - SPRING 2014
Once I noticed that some of the 30A area accounts were following SeasideCrewLife and liking our photos, I was really shocked. TheSeasideStyle, 30A, the official Seaside account and others began following us and interacting with us which was super neat because it gave a sense of credibility. We also got a shout out from the official 30A Facebook page through a photo we posted with Luke Bryan. That was awesome.
How do you choose which photos make the regram cut?
I try to choose really lively, quality photos. Thousands of pictures have been submitted since I began the Instagram account and unfortunately, not all of them get posted. I try to best portray Seaside and the life it offers!
It is really simple and easy to submit pictures! You just hashtag #instagrammeseasidecrewlife under your picture and that’s it!
