30A STREET STYLE - PRE-SPRING 2014 3

FROM THE EDITOR

Prepping for spring is a process. We have emerged from the holiday season and chilly winter ready to see what’s ahead and let me tell you, we have a lot to look forward to. Though we may have felt the same buzz of optimism and excitement around this time in past years, I’m fairly certain that 2014 is going to be the best one yet. There is so much to love about life on 30A, especially this time of year. Streams of sunshine and the first true beach days make us giddy. Getting ready for all that a busy season brings is actually kind of fun. Everything looks clean, fresh and primed for activity. This is really when we come into our own. We find inspiration all around us in the crisp white sand, the pink sunsets, turquoise water and pastel sky (p. 8-19). A pop of color, a new dress or metallic heels (p. 22) can make us feel like new women, charged and ready for anything that comes our way. Motivation and anticipation are flying high. We get to find the romance in everyday life and fall in love with our beach town - and sweetheart - all over again (p. 26). New ideas and partnerships like Missy Robertson for Southern Fashion House are cause for celebration (p. 42) and we realize how lucky we are to live in a community that proudly supports its own - go, Steph! Girls rule as always, especially when guitars are involved. Hello, 30A Fest! (p. 45) A trip to Miami Swim week gives us bikini fever (p. 50). Flowers and floral prints are the poster girls of spring, bringing femininity, bold colors and endless outfit inspiration (p. 63). Red carpet beauty on stars like Reese Witherspoon has us ready to switch up our beauty routine (p. 74) and a super-cute popcorn recipe means we’re ready for a cozy date night on the couch. These are just some of the blips on our radar at 30A Street Style. Beyond the year’s first ezine, we have a few exciting things up our (fashionable) sleeve. Read on and stay tuned for all the wonderful things 2014 has in store!

Sincerely, Jami Ray

WHY WE LOVE CUFFED JEANS: 1. There’s no wrong way to wear a cuff. One cuff. Two cuffs. Tight Cuff. Loose Cuff. Dr. Seuss-ing aside, it’s all about style and preference, so experiment and find the one that flatters you best. 2. Forget worrying about the length of your jeans determining what shoe you wear. Cuffs can make long or slightly cropped jeans transition from heeled shoes to flat shoes - no change of denim required. 3. They show off our fabulous booties. Duh. My wallet also doubles as a clutch and is a great transition piece for day to night. I have a planner I always keep on my desk, but I love scratching random ideas and notes in these J. For my two-year-old Emery, I always seem to have her hair bows in my bag, tissues on hand and change for making wishes at the fountains in Watercolor and Rosemary Beach. Also, I normally have a banana as a snack for me or Emery, but that’s already been eaten today. Stay tuned! We’ll be featuring a different 30A lady (and her bag) each issue!

30A Street Style chats up Belle de Couture 34 30A STREET STYLE - PRE-SPRING 2014

Niceville native Jennifer Rand returns to the area with a fresh focus on fashion. We asked the Belle de Couture blogger what she’s looking forward to most this spring. THE BLOG: BelledeCouture.com FAVORITE FASHION ICON: Poppy Delevingne HER STYLE: My personal style is a mix of designer and department store pieces, along with my vintage and thrift finds (which are my favorite pieces to wear). I would say I have a very eclectic style. It ranges from day to day, but is always filled with a pop of color, fun prints, or bold accessories. FAVORITE PRE-SPRING RITUAL: Every spring I look forward to pulling out my bright printed vintage skirts and dresses. They are all unique pieces that stand-out and really make a statement. MUST-HAVE ITEM: I’ve been rockin’ the crop top trend since 2011 and I have to say I’m still a big fan, so I’m glad to see that the trend is sticking around this season. I love to pair a black or white crop top with a bottom that is colorful or has a fun print -- be it a skirt, a trouser, or shorts! I also am loving the espadrille flats that are making a come-back this spring and summer. Chanel, Tory Burch, and Loeffler Randall all have super cute options that can easily transition from a day at the beach, to dinner and drinks in the evening. Think comfortable and stylish. FAVORITE PLACE ALONG 30A: Bud & Alley’s! I love the rooftop bar and dancing below to the live bands! EXCITED TO BE BACK IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA? Home is definitely where the heart is, and coming back home felt so right. I’m very excited to be around family and close friends again and, of course, our amazing beaches! --JR 30A STREET STYLE - PRE-SPRING 2014 35

BLOGGER SARAH POWERS SHARES THE MUST-HAVE ITEMS ON HER FASHION RADAR

1 2

I am SO excited for the airiness a pastel brings to the table. So excited that I have already started to incorporate this palette into my winter wardrobe. Most pastels work well as a neutral, which means you can work them directly into your current closet.

This pastel trend does not stop at the threads and the red carpet season has already put one trend in motion - a fresh, bright face. Eyelids filled with rich lilac pigments, cheeks kissed with muted tangerine and lips puckered in ballet pink. I also love taking the pastel makeup trend in a monochromatic direction. Carrying one defining shade throughout the entire face. This trend can be tricky though, you want to make sure to keep it in moderation.

3 4 5

Staring at your closet not having a clue what to put with what? The easiest color scheme to try is no color at all! While some may be driven to throw a pop of color in a solid ensemble, I am totally digging white from head to toe. You can give variation to the trend by incorporating multiple “hues” such as ivory, eggshell or cream. I do love the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” and I especially love it when something of mine that “ain’t broke” becomes a trend! The white nail trend has played perfectly into my staple nail color, OPI Funny Bunny. Now while I am totally down with straight up white on the digits, Funny Bunny offers a not so in your face approach to the clean, manicured spring must have.

The beach is your runway, and though a bathing suit is not my favorite part of fashion, we live at the beach so bathing suits are a way of life. This season, I have found my official beach uniform. I am totally in love with the chic element a one-piece brings. (These are stylish! Get those 7th grade swim team thoughts of your speedo out of your head!) The cover-ups that will take me from beach to beach bar are not really a cover-up at all. Multiple fashion lines have taken cue from the one and only Miss Stevie Nicks. The sheer open front cardigan hits in the right place to cover, the material doesn’t cause you to sweat to death and the fringe screams, “Um…of course I am famous.” While every fashionista loves a good accessory, I feel like beach accessories should kept to a minimum. Bag, shades, hat. Bing bang boom. FOLLOW SARAH ON INSTAGRAM FOR DAILY FASHION INSPIRATION AT @CLOSETINI OR SIGN UP TO RECEIVE SARAH’S STYLE NEWSLETTER AT STYLEBYSARAH85@GMAIL.COM.

southern fashion SOUTHERN FASHION DYNASTY

dynasty

Local designer Stephanie Carter partners with Missy Robertson for new clothing line WHEN A DETERMINED WOMAN SETS HER MIND TO DO SOMETHING, CONSIDER IT DONE. WHEN TWO WOMEN JOIN FORCES TO MAKE SOMETHING CREATIVE AND BEAUTIFUL HAPPEN, THE WORLD BETTER WATCH OUT! Stephanie Carter has been taking the South by storm since opening her first DeJa Vu boutique along 30A, followed shortly by opening additional stores in cities like Key West, Panama City Beach and Fairhope, AL as well as launching the popular Judith March clothing line, a new Jacque and Janis line and the freshly formed Southern Fashion House as a parent company for all of her projects. Her talent and creative drive have had the fashion industry taking note. Stars like Nina Dobrev and Melissa Joan Hart have been spotted wearing her dresses. Meanwhile, Missy Robertson of A&E’s Duck Dynasty and wife of Jase Robertson, was experiencing a growing schedule that demanded numerous public appearances. She felt beckoned to fill a void in the fashion industry – a stylish yet comfortable and age appropriate clothing line. Missy has long been a fan of the Judith March line and immediately turned to Carter to help bring her vision to fruition. Like a textbook definition of synergy, these two have come together to collaborate and create Missy Robertson by Southern Fashion House. “I felt there was a void in the market for active, busy, working moms who want to look put together without having to put a lot of effort into it while staying modest and age-appropriate. These styles are reflective of the fun new fashions that can always be found in the junior section of department stores. However, the silhouettes in the collection are intended to flatter women of all ages, shapes, and sizes,” says Missy. Much like the DeJa Vu and Judith March lines have become wardrobe staples for a variety of young women, the target Missy Robertson by Southern Fashion House customer is also an “every woman.” Nearly overnight, the Shop Missy Robertson Facebook page skyrocketed to over 370,000 fans, showing just how many ladies can relate. Missy says “At first I thought it would be a woman like myself – a busy, working mom who is always on the go. However, my 19 year old cousin loves every piece that I’ve worn so far and asks to borrow them. My 84-year old grandmother has also picked out a few pieces for herself. It seems to appeal to all ages, and that thrills me.”

42 30A STREET STYLE - PRE-SPRING 2014

Missy Robertson by Southern Fashion House clothing line mixes vibrant colors and patterns with slightly longer hemlines, varying sleeve options and shapes resulting in fashion that is figure flattering, age appropriate and contemporary. The collection is rich in its interesting patterns and vibrant colors of bright jades, teals and turquoise mixed with touches of coral and balanced with neutrals, executed in substantial fabrics that are easy to care for. Textures like crochet and embroidery bring exquisite detail and dress up knits for stretch and comfort. The Spring Collection, debuted last month at Market in Atlanta, Dallas and Las Vegas, consists of approximately 55 pieces including dresses, sportswear, light cover-ups, and mix-and-match tops that are versatile and affordable. Retail prices will range from $54-$120 with the average price staying within the $78-$88 range. The collection will be available in department stores where this price point will make the most sense and the target consumer shops. The line will also be available in select boutiques across the United States, Canada, & Mexico. For Stephanie, the collaboration could not have been better. “Honestly, it was a match made in heaven. We are both from the south and I immediately felt at home when I met her. It was that Southern hospitality kind of thing. Forces joining was exactly what I felt when I left our first meeting. She is so real and I have a lot of respect for her because she is a hard working mom. We both felt the same way about the void in the fashion world that needed to be filled.” “I have been asked countless times to incorporate longer hemlines and higher necklines into my clothing line Judith March. I always wanted to do a line like this but had never had the kind of inspiration that Missy gave me that day we first met. It was truly meant to be because she wanted the clothes for herself and really knew what she wanted which gave me the inspiration to create it. Judith March targets a younger customer as far as fit and color story. The reason Stephanie never incorporated this concept into Judith March is because she wanted to keep that line true to itself. “Like the old saying...”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We asked Stephanie what it was like traveling to West Monroe, LA to film, photograph, and collaborate with

SOUTHERN FASHION DYNASTY Missy and she gave us another favorite saying, “hard work keeps you humble.” She says, “I was excited to get the opportunity but honestly is was work... exciting work but no time to think anything like ‘OMG I’m in Missy Robertson’s house right now!’ I was too busy helping present the 30 samples we had made that expressed our vision. When we returned later to film and do the photo shoot, I was working then, too. I have to say it was a long day but with the help from my amazing team and Tommy Crow and his crew, we got the job done. I have to say the part in the video when we are walking together and talking, we really connected. Missy had been so patient and worked so hard all day long. I mean, it’s not glamorous being in the spotlight all the time...it’s tough. She was a trooper and when we were walking in between the two duck ponds, I told her how nice it was to work with a hard worker. I told her thank you. She has a lot of patience and passion. I feel we really ‘get’ each other. You know, it’s kind of like a relationship...you have to be open, honest and always communicate.” If you don’t already get the feeling that Stephanie is some sort of modern day Superwoman, you will. With Southern Fashion House, Judith March, DeJa Vu stores and now this line with Missy, we had to ask how she manages to balance it all and be a mom to her son Fox. Her response? “It takes an army. I have an amazing team and honestly, I wouldn’t have been able to take this opportunity if it weren’t for my CEO Christy Smith. As far as balance goes, I pray for balance everyday...as my mother has always said, take it one day at a time.” We get the feeling this is only the beginning. With all of the success Stephanie has accomplished so far in the fashion world, we had to ask what she has next on her agenda. True to form, she has a humble answer. “It’s like reading a book. Everyday is a new page and as long as I’m excited to read the next page, I will be inspired to do the next thing. Honestly, I am just taking the doors that God opens for me.” --JR

MARA HOFFMAN PRINT MERCEDES-BENZ

H

itting South Beach for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s Miami Swim event in the peak of swimsuit season is an experience like no other. It’s like hitting the bikini motherload. Hot bodies, curves and vivid shades entice -- and those are just the cars. Ha! All joking aside, Miami is truly a lesson in glam. From crisp black and white that exudes easy sophistication to loud neons and piled on look-at-me accessories that scream for attention, the styles showed quite the range. Here are my top lessons learned from Miami Swim.

more black & white stripes

The chic entrance at The Raleigh Hotel adorned with striped umbrellas along with countless pool-side and beach-

front cabanas boasting flowing black and white curtains were enough to make any style-lover swoon. Dozens of store-fronts along Collins Avenue were finished with black and white canopies or awnings, making the perfect match to the white art deco buildings everywhere. The look is clean, timeless and has a certain movieset glamour I couldn’t get enough of.

colorblock with brights

As one might guess for Miami, there was no shortage of neon on hand. From highlighter yellow to a bold 80s pink with black accents or lime green and pink colorblocking like at BEACH RIOT, the street style and the runway style were full of strong, vivid color. Strong edge accents of white or black were also a trend.

sweet can be sexy

No one puts a sexy spin on bubblegum sweetness quite like LOLLI SWIM. With models wearing hearts on bikini tops, soft feminine colors, bows on the boobs and the booty and carrying actual candy down the runway (see Princess Pia Mia’s candy bracelet at left), this collection was a girly girl’s best friend.

always do more squats

Strong and toned is the new sexy and with bikinis favoring cheeky bottoms, you’ll want to add a few extra to your gym routine to get as much firm junk in your trunk as your taste allows. I chatted with model THAIS MARTIN after the marathon of shows she walked in (including L Space, at left) and asked what her workout routine was like. She demonstrated on the spot. “My trainer makes me do a lot of leg lifts with weights around my ankle and way too many squats. Always do more squats.” Of course, her Amazon-woman-like genetics don’t hurt either.

look the part

Accessories were plentiful as silver sandals, white heels and sky-high wedges hit the runway. Pom pom hair accessories, lots of gold jewelry and even a belly chain or two were bikinifriendly. Of course, beachy waves would be expected to accompany an oceant-front setting, but

MIAMI SWIM

there was also a mix of stick straight styles and fresh-from-the-pool slicked ‘dos like at MINIMALE ANIMALE. Casual knots and center parts also made a statement.

orange is the new...orange?

Though not as chic as black or white and not as fun as hot pink, orange is really a color in a category all its own. It’s quirky and different but has a certain bold appeal and there were plenty of orange styles in every shade from cantaloupe to creamsicle to red-orange. I loved the black, white, pink and orange printed caftan at MANGLAR. What’s even better? Orange makes sun-kissed skin pop!

turquoise takes over

Perhaps taking a cue from the refreshing shades of the ocean, designers showed a range of turquoise styles from delicate crochet coverups at ANNA KOSTUROVA to serene blue bikinis.

black is beach-friendly

From black one-piece suits to bikinis, dress and black sandals galore, the darkest color in the spectrum is big for 2014. Black is classic and fail-safe, never really leaving the scene for long, Pair it with crisp white or mix it in with pastels and vivid hues to make them stand out. There’s no question, it’s having a moment in 2014. -- JR

“Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” As noted by Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly

in The Devil Wears Prada, the flower trend in spring may be tried and true, but isn’t exactly an original idea. To freshen our perspective, we’re taking outfit inspiration straight from the experts. We asked BRITTNI WALKER of IONA’S FLOWER MARKET and MELANIE JORDAN of BELLA FLORA to share flowers perfect for the season. Brittni’s bouquets have sweet southern flair with classic, preppy style. Melanie’s arrangements have a fresh-cut feel as if each item has just been plucked from a field. Turn the page to see the fabulous designs and the outfits they inspired.

BEAUTY

get the

Jamie Gummere of Blush Beauty Lounge shares her favorite pre-spring ritual: getting an organic spray tan and prepping skin the right way. By the time February hits, I’m oh so ready for spring: warmer weather, a fresh pedicure, and just a little sun on my face to make me feel pretty. It’s also the time of year where I start thinking about bikinis (yikes!) and my pasty-looking winter skin. Fortunately, I live in a country where organic spray tans are available and help me get through this “icky” phase of winter (and for the record, I am thankful for my many blessings in this country. Here they are in order of importance: food, clothing, shelter, spray tans, lipgloss! As an added bonus, a tan just makes you feel skinnier! Am I right, ladies?!? To prep for a spray tan, a full body exfoliation is a must. The dead skin needs to be sloughed off the surface so that the tan can develop on the skin (that is, only if you want to extend the life of your tan). This can be done the night before or the morning of your tan. See one of my favorite at-home scrubs at bottom: Now you’re off to your tanning appointment. In most salons, you can bring an old bikini to tan in, go a’la birthday suit, or some salons provide disposable undergarments. The technician will then begin to spray you. I prefer to use an organic solution to avoid toxic chemicals to the skin. As an added bonus, organic solutions don’t carry the stinky factor. The process takes approximately 15 minutes in which you will demonstrate various poses to ensure an even spray. When finished, the solution may still be slightly tacky to the touch. Bring loose-fitted cotton clothing for post tan. Most spray tans require 6-8 hours (sometimes more) before showering. To ensure the longevity of your tan, avoid exfoliating the skin (this includes waxing, razors, and your scrubby in the shower). It’s best to use a soft cloth or your hand for washing and avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine pools (yes, you can still swim, I’m just simply warning you that the tan will fade quicker). Keep the skin moisturized and enjoy. Learn more about Jamie and Blush Beauty Lounge at blushbeautylounge.com.

Here’s a simple recipe for your own at-home scrub:

2 Cups Coconut Oil or Almond Oil 1 Cup Epsom Salt 8 Drops Essential Oils (optional, use your favorite scent) Mix ingredients and store in an airtight container. Be careful when using this in the shower as the oil can make the tub slippery. Scrub away and rinse for freshly prepped skin.

Red Carpet MAKEUP In the midst of Hollywood’s annual awards season, we’ve been taking note - well, lots of notes. The gowns are gorgeous, diamonds captivate as always and funny moments keep us giggling to our televisions. (We’re looking at you, Jennifer Lawrence). This year, it is the beauty that has us nodding in approval as each starlet emerges onto the red carpet. The flawless glowing skin is just the right mix of winter porcelain and warm-weather bronze - no poorly matched spray tans! Natural looks on REESE WITHERSPOON, AMY ADAMS and MARGOT ROBBIE include only a sliver of eyeliner, a soft swipe of blush and a sheer shade of lip product. Pouts on KERRY WASHINGTON and EMMA WATSON are subtly nude or perfectly pink, adding just the right girly touch. The dramatic exception is a dash of silver and a few dabs of blue eyeshadow that creates a bright smoky eye.

Go for soft & sweet beauty!
