What if a High Chair can be Folded as easy as a piece of Paper ?
02
shutting seat Baby High Chair
SHUTTING SEAT is a high chair designed for unban family with baby around 6 months to 3 years old. With the function of being set up and folded altogether in one time, SUTTING SEAT not only simplifies the step of using the high chair but saves the storage space.

The experience of sitting in a high chair is a common step that most people have. That is, a high chair is a vitally important product for babies, allowing them to be seated at the same height as their family and preventing them from feeling isolated.
Background of High Chair
The design of the high chair has been perfected in many ways, with special attention given to function, structure, materials, and especially safety. Besides, the diversity of forms provides multiple choices for users. Even multifunctional purposes, which are becoming more commonplace, allow short-term transformations of the product into desks or even an adjustable-chairs, extending the traditional usable period.
Opportunity for Next High Chiar However, there is not much difference in the ways high chairs are folded. As an established product, many high-chair innovations have already been created and accepted. While considering the limited space in urban areas, it is necessary to think about managing a larger chair in a small space.
05
Analysis
of Existed Products To know about the high chair, we did the online research and also went to Lerado (a Taiwanese company that specializes in baby products) to discover more possibilities.
• • • • • •
Requirements
06
Seat back must be higher than baby’s shoulder Length of seat should fit the baby’s thigh Size of tray needs to be big enough for the baby Seatbelt must be included to protect the baby Height needs to be adjustable Capable of being folded and storage
Observation and interviews
Without any experience childcare, we went to playgrounds in the department stores to interview parents. We also visited several kindergartens and observed how the little kids enjoyed having their meals.
Feedbacks • • • • •
Products which offer multiple functions can be too difficult to set up Tray is often spilt with food or biten by baby, so it should be easy to clean up Uncomfortable feeling makes baby escape from the high chair The stability of highchair is really important because baby is really active High chair is not only used for dining but as a place for baby to draw and play
07
Goal Setting
We reanalyzed scenarios that urban nuclear families face when using high chairs. After current products testing, user observation, and interview, we found out “complicated set up process” and “no space for storage” can be the tmain problems for parents. Therefore, we would like to bring an easier and pleasant experience for modern unban families. Our goal is to design a high chair with the values of lightness, easiness, modernity, by chanllenging ourselves to experiment and create a new mechanism for folding and storaging the high chair.
Ideation
08
Development In the convergent phase, five ideas were made in 3D drawings and presented to others. After dicussion with coaches, the concept with surprising folding system was chosen and developed till the final stage.
09
SUTTING SEAT is a high chair designed for urban family. By simplifying the set-up process and reducing the required storage space, parents will have a more easier and delightful dinning experience with their baby.
Final Design
To achieve the goal, our approach is to make the high chair as light and simple as it can. Firstly, the concept was started from paper prototyping. We tested the stability, lightness and foldability through trimming and connecting the pieces of cardboad. Accordingly, the inspirations of paper were then integrated into the high chair.
10
The structure is divided into two parts with an axis as a connection, which shows a aesthentic symmetrical form. Thanks to the innovative folding structure, STUTTING SEAT is able to folded altogether in one time. In addition, the traditional four stand point design was replaced by the three stand point, which enhances the stability.
SHUTTING SEAT has functions. Firstly, large explore the food or Secondly, the cushion easy cleaning. Last, adjustable.

What I Learned In May 2013, we presented the concept of SHUTTING SEAT in the Design exhibition in Taipei, a lot of visiters were inspired by the way of how the high chair being folded, luckily, we received an award and also some companies were interested in. However, SHUTTING SEAT was still a concept due to lots of safety issues have not been verified yet. Besides, we recieved some suggestions for the improvement of the structure. On the other hand, materials and manufacture process also have to been considered carefully. Nevertheless, the most valuable part was that both of us had lots of fun. We learned to be really self-motivated, made the plan, found the resources, and as well shaped the model by ourselves. Although the final design was not perfect enough, we were quite satisfied the way we have achieved.

easy meal An Independent Lifestyle supported by Food Service
EASY MEAL is a new eating lifestyle proposed for Taiwanese, especially students and living alones to prepared the meal in an easier way. Which also enables them to take control of thier food. EASY MEAL is supported by a vending machine, the food sold inside is packaged in small amount. The package is made of special bags which introduce a new way for preparing the food and a new experience of having a meal.

Project Background I decided to take Denmark as an example of western culture, and introduce that to Taiwanese, because I had stayed in Copenhagen for half year, I thought it would be nice to share the idea of individualism to Asia.
Oversea Study in Arts and Design (MOE) is an workshop which students with design background joined to win a sholarship for studying abroad. In that year, the topic was announce by the coach from TU Delft, our challenge was to introduce a culture of a country to another country by designing the food or the kits.

Understand the Context Taiwanese culture was influenced by Chinese and Japanese a lot, while due to the globalization, lots of Taiwanese start to live based on western lifestyle nowadays. However, when thinking about the big difference between these two culture. From my perspective, western students act more independently and recognized more as an individual. Next, I went a step back from understanding the system or values which make it different or support this lifestyle. Then, I began to think about how I had my meals when I was in Demark. I found out that, in Denmark, I had chance to prepare my own meal, to decide what I want to eat, to learn how to cook, to be more control of my own diet because the student houses there normally suited with a kitchen. However, in Taiwan, we seldom have chance to cook. Students always buy outside and unsure about the sanitary. Even though it is convenient with affordable price, most students still eager to have kitchen in their dorms. On the other hand, Taiwanese have problem of deciding what to have for lunch. It might sounds funny, but actually it makes people tired if they does not have chance to “create what to eat, but only can choose from the fix options.

people share the dishes
Compare Food and Lifestyle In this phase, I selected certain type of food as the representitives of each culture base on my personal experience. A comparison was made to understand the context behind. In order to respond to the lifestyle of the young generation in Taiwan, the examples were focusd on the food which can be made/got easily.
The advantage of Boil-in-bag is identified as easy for one person, simple cooking process and less time consuming. Though the taste of boiling rice may not be comparable to the steam rice, its values are somehow interesting to inspire Taiwanese.
Denmark - Cold food It is common to have cold food such as open sandwich and salad for lunch. People here use to have light lunch, they usually prepare by themselves. Boil-in bag is a type of product which small amount of rice is packaged in a special bag , speciphically let one person to cook rice easily and quickly.
Package - Single Rice is packaged in single package, easy for one person to prepare his/her meal for one person
Cook - Boil
Rice can be cook just by boiling, and it only takes 10 minutes.
Individual Easy Fast
19
Define the Focus After comparing the food, culture and context, I decided to introduce a new experience of preparing a meal. Which at the same time shows the value of being self control. The focus groups are university students and workers who live alone and seldom or have no chance to prepare their own lunch.
Taiwan - Warm food Students usually get the lunch outside. Multiple frozen food sold in 7-11 is easy and quick to get. Instant noodle is also one poplular option, though is unhealthy. Lunch box is the most typical food students and employees buy for their lunch.
Package - Big Rice is the main food for Taiwanese, it is usually sold in big pack for faimily use.
Cook - Steam
Every family has at least on electric pot specifically for cooking rice for around 4 - 10 people. The process takes around 45 minutes.

Rina (21) International student Okinawa, Japan
Wei-wei works as an accountant in Taiwan Bank. At the lunch time, her colleage will order the lunch boxes for evey employee. Even though the food is a bit different during a week, she feels tired of the lunch.
Rina is an international student who currently studying Chinese at the language center in NCKU, Tainan. Because of the language barrier, she usually buys her food in 7-11. Rina usually go jogging in the evening to stay healthy.
Wei-wei hopes she will have time and place to make her lunch in the office, so she can decide what she really want to have. Besides, a delightful lunch time will make her happy and energetic in the afternoon.
Rina loves Taiwanese food, but the salty and oily taste makes her sick, and sometimes she misses Japenese food.
Development Why the boil-in-bag should be introduced to Taiwan? Why do people cook instead of eating out as it is the most convenient way in Taiwan?
In order to clarify the meaning and culture values which I intend to incorporate in the new experience, I began with clarifying some questions.
21
The lifestyle and value are changing, people want to live more independent and healthy. To incorporate the values of boil-in-bag, so preparing your own meal in an easier and fast way is possible.
WHY HOW

EASY MEAL is a new cooking and eating experience for the modern Taiwanese. The values of boil-in-bag are embeded into the design which enables students and office workers to make their own meal in a faster and easier way. The vending machine is a platform which customers can decide, buy and cook. A company will support the whole service system, by collecting the meat and vegetable directly from the producers, cleaning and packaging the ingredients. The food will be delivered to each vending machine situated in the offices or student dormitories. The meaning behind EASY MEAL is to let people be more independent and be seen as an individual. On the other hand, being able to manage their meal, people can live healthier and happier.

What I Learned This project was made in 10 days, and we discussed and built the concept with six instructors from overseas. I learned to keep clearly about the culture and values I intend to deliver, because the advices given by each coach were quite diverse.
However, EASY MEAL is not intended to replace the original Taiwanese eating culture, but to give a chance for people to decide and make what they want to eat. In the future, the idea should include the business perspective and takes the stakeholders into consideration, in order to make it more sustainable.
In addition, instead of stocking in designing an object, I tried to go deepr into the context and think about the experience, service, or system. Therefore, the solution would not only benefit the end customers, but other stakeholders.

Can we fix the most annoying problem that
students meet in NCKU campus ?
26
b . park Bicycle Parking Slot
According to the observation, we found out that students in NCKU are tired of finding thier bicycles because it is always difficult to be aware of the daily routine. Therefore, B . PARK is supportive parking slot for students in NCKU. Instead of using high-tech, we challenge ourselves to come up with a more feasible solution, which the university are able to implement as aoon as possible.

Background In the beginning of design process, we observed some problem around our department and school. For example, we found trash and chair position problem, and as well bicycle problem in campus. Bicycle problem was chosen as our group project since many of students in NCKU used bicycle and many students concern about this problem as well.
Oberservation and Interview To start with the issue of bicycle, we did brainstorming to questioning anything about bicycle/scooter to the users. And according to the observation, we narrowed down into three questions, which are about barriers and parking slot. Next, we set out to do ethnographic research on the campus of NCKU.
The bicycle repair man to find out story related to bicycle accidents near the barriers. Thought not much stories were got, however, it is true that bicycle pedals tend to crack because of the barriers. This was also confirmed by a young student who had a pedal broken off.
29
A maintained lady whose job was to keep the parking for bicycle neat. She acknowledged the parking was messy and one time she even hurt her hand when putting the bicycles back in order. Other cyclist thought the parking could be better, but a few did not find it such a problem. The barriers however caused most concern. Our interviewees mention it was wither too high or too dangerous. For some pedestrians, it was not so much a problem during the day, but Others said it was difficult to pass if you were towing a suitcase behind you or was even dangerous if you didn’t paid attention to where you were walking, for eample, checking smartphone).
30
Cultural Probe A tool called 5 days game was made to discover users insights related to bicycle. The participants followed different task each day for five days. A campus map is provided to mark the pros and cons based on the traveling experience.
From the result of cultural probe, 5 points are in bad environment, 3 points problems are about parking. For example, no enough parking rack, no roof over parking area. Based on our findings, the bicycle problems that most student concern about is parking. Therefore, we decided to solve parking problem by designing new parking concept.
31
Persona is made to visualize the user’s characteristic based on the finding from cultural probe. We created five personas of different target users, among them are local students, international students, and a campus cleaning lady.
Persona
Pei-yi Zhang (20) EMBA student Tainan, Taiwan Likes: reading, speech club, sleep early and wake up early Dislikes: noise, crowded places Characteristic: hardworking, punctual, a bit shy In the morning, Pei-yi buys her breakfast on the street and then ride the bikes to school. At lunch time, she usually get a simple lunch box nearby the campus. Pei-yi is a diligent and self discipline student and she studies in the library almost every evening,. In addition, Pei-yi joins the speech club once a week to train her public speaking skill. She needs bicycle to travel between her dorm, class, library and speech club, however, since everything is as a daily rountine, it’s hard to remember where the bike is.
32
Ideation In the beginning of idea generation, brainstorming was used to warm up and gather a broad range of ideas. Next, we made the ideas into group and sketched the possible solutions. We also used paper to make simple prototype to demonstrate the design.
Concept Development In the end, one concept was chosen and made into 3D drawing. Two rough prototype were built not only to test the scale but also placed in the campus for a week to get the feedbacks from students.
33
The concept of the design covered 3 major problems : Roof to protect the bicycle from sun and rain; color parking space to mark the parking location and stamp to remind the bicycle location for the user who often forget where they park their bicycle; while solar power will absorb the sun heat that become lighting power in the night. The solar power system will keep support the green environment as NCKU has done and also help the bicycle user to be able find their bicycle in the night. Color stamp students can mark on their hand/note as a “Reminder
Solar panel support the lighting system at night
Color parking grid divide the one parking area into several small slot, so students are able to search their bikes easier
34
Testing The bicycle parking design simulation was performed in NCKU dormitory parking area. The area was marked with yellow and blue color, with the strip provided as a stamp “reminder” in order to help users remeber where they parked their bicycle. Thus, users takea strip after they park their bicycle. For each bicycle which parked in the marked area, we put note and asked their feedback about strip and color function in parking area. After filling feedback in the note, the users could stick the note in the pole that we have prepared.
Feedbacks from users After the product simulation, we collected the user feedbacks and reviewed it. The main findings of this user test are mostly about color function, which allows them to find their bike easier, recognize parking area, and help them to park in the right place.
While the strip function didn’t have significant impact to help the users remember their bicycle location. From these findings, we concluded that, color function in bicycle parking area has big contribution to solve user’s problems that we have identify in the research process.
35
What I Learned In this project, we realized that since bicycle is the most common vehicle for students travelling in NCKU campus, thus a lot of infrastructure are built to support the bicyclers. However, it is hard for the university to manage thousands of bikes. On the other hand, students still complain the insufficiency of the facilities.
In the end, our team presented the concept of B . PARK to the university, though the final solution still need to be optimized, they thought the problem we identified was quite true but was overlooked before, and the design was simple and feasible enough for them to fulfill as well. Our team is formed internationally, with students from Netherlands, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan. We learned to share and respect each others perspectives and cultural background. For example, student from the Netherlands provided great information about bicycle system, we were all impressive.
We hope B . PARK could be a stimulus to help university organization realize the problems that the students meet when cycling in the campus. Instead of using high-tech, we developed the solution which is easy to reach with low budget and integrate into the existing facilities.
