IRIS CH I EN I am 24 years old students who is currently doing an exchange program in Strategic Product Design, Delft University of Techonology. I have a cheerful personality and enjoy working in as a team, since every step is developed by collaboration from different perspectives. In the near future, I would like to learn more about how to run a project in a more systematic way and combine innovative ideas with practical use.

collaborating with Little Sun, a social business distributing solar lamps, to help bring clean, reliable and affordable light to off-grid African regions.

Brief Understanding of Solar Lamp A solar lamp is a portable light fixture composed of an LED lamp, a photovoltaic solar panel, and a rechargeable battery. Outdoor lamps may have a lamp, solar panel and battery integrated in one unit. Indoor

solar

lamps

with

separately-mounted solar panels are used for general illumination where centrally generated power is not conveniently or economically

available.

Solar-powered

household lighting may displace light sources, saving money for the user, and reducing fire and pollution hazards.

02

Existed Products Analysis Solar garden lights are used for decoration, and come in a wide variety of designs. They are frequently used to mark footpaths or the areas around swimming pools. Some solar lights do not provide as much light as a line-powered lighting system, but they are easily installed and maintained,

and

provide

a

cheaper

alternative to wired lamps.

Solar

street

lights provide public

lighting without use of an electrical grid; they may have individual panels for each lamp of a system, or may have a large central solar panel and battery bank to power multiple lamps.

Eco Tray Seedling Tray

A sustainable planting container design, which lets the whole lot back to earth, allowing farmers to plant the sprouts without using indecomposable plastic.

/ Sustainable Design / 2014 Autumn

07

Problems of Original Seedling Tray Generally, the seedling trays are made of black plastic which can’t be decomposed. Every time, the sprouts may easily be hurt while the farmers taking it out.

• The traditional seedling trays use indecomposable material

• The sprouts need to be taken out from the trays.

08

Benefits of Eco Tray Eco Tray is a sustainable container design, it shows three features 1. The material will become the fertilizer and blend into the soil. 2. The trace between enable each unit be split out easily. 3. The bottom was designed as a corn which is easier to stick into the ground.

• Corn shape enables it to be easily inserted into the soil

• Easy to aplit apart each unit

09

Eco Tray let the whole lot back to the earth. The farmers would never need to take the sprouts out with exceptional caution, and even the problem of wasted plastic would never happen.

Bottle Chair Chair for Kindergarten

A one-piece seat which used minimal materials is easy for production. The plasice bottles are given a second life by being reused as the seat legs. Children in kindergarten enjoy making their own chair and knowing the importance of ecofriendly. / Sustainable Design / 2011 Autumn

11

Problems of the Wasted Plastic Bottles Research has revealed that the average number of plastic bottles used per person annually in the U.S. is 167. It takes three times the volume of water to manufacture one bottle of water than it does to fill it. Water bottles are made completely of recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, but PETs don't biodegrade they photodegrade, which means they break down into smaller fragments over time. They may take centuries to decompose while sitting in landfills, amounting to endless billions of little environmentally poisonous time bombs. Eighty percent of the water bottles we buy end up in landfills, the absolute worst place for them to be. That means, roughly, for every 10 bottles we drink, only two end up in the recycle bin.

12

What Came to My Mind Given the shocking, dramatic statistics, it is imperative for us to explore ways to protect the environment. I started to think about reusing the bottles, which though they may not reduce the overall amount of waste, to some extent they can assist in doubling the value of the bottles.

Examples of Reusing the Bottles Many have recycled plastic bottles for decorative or practical use, such as curtains, lamps, shelters, pencil boxes and walls. But most were about aesthetics and somehow lacked feasibility. The “2-nd Lives project of Coca Cola provided a lot of inspiration for this new focus. They offered a surprising amount of upcycled

functionality.

For

kids

they

designed water guns, bubble blowers, paintbrushes, and drums; and for adults there were spray bottles, soap dispensers, hand

weights,

and

even

condiment

dispensers.

13

Thus, I decided to build on this idea, and chose young children as the target group in order to deliver the concept of reusing bottles in an early age.

What Do Children Experience in Kindergarten It was said that kindergarten is a place for “teaching children a rich, meaningful, and balanced information,
