Biography As a 23 years old industrial designer with a cheerful and responsible personality, I really enjoy thinking out innovative ideas and sketch all these concepts down as much as possible. I strongly believe a thorough research improves the idea generation and let concepts flourish in real life, so that’s why I choose this domain for my Master thesis topic. In the near future, I am curious to learn more about how to run a project in a more systematic way and combine creative ideas with practical use.

Research Kompan
Kompan believe that every human being has the right to play, what ever the age or circumstance.
05
Kompan believe that the function of playgrounds is to encourage children to meet and interact with other children and together learn from one another, or to play on their own without being alone.
Playful Living expresses: The importance of play for all. The commitment to children's right to play. And the belief that every human being is unique and valuable.
2012 Spring / International Design Program
Target Group
User Persona
The target group is school children, more specifically ages between 5 and 9. The playground will be situated in a school playground and should combine some sort of fun learning. The skills that can be taught through learning are vast however through waterfalls, discussions and research of types of learning that already takes place in schools we have narrowed it to balancing, music, geometrics, climbing and social skills/teamwork.
Mission Statement To design unique and safe playground equipment for 1st to 3rd grade schoolchildren focused on the topic of learning while playing in the school environment, combining both mental and physical abilities, which can fit into Kompan’s product range, taking into account its philosophy and know-how and using existing fabrication processes.

2012 Spring / International Design Program
Learning through Activity Participants in an activity construct their own knowledge by testing ideas and concepts based on prior knowledge and experience, applying them to a new situation, and integrating the new knowledge with pre-existing intellectual constructs; a process familiar to us from real world situations. Piaget, known for his theory on the psychological development of children, believed in the role of action in development and the notion that children develop cognitive structure through action and spontaneous activity [Piaget 1973; De Vries and Kohlberg 1987].
Learning through Play Play is a child’s favourite activity, so the belief that learning occurs more readily in an environment of fun, challenge, and variety may seem obvious. However, concern has been raised regarding the drawbacks of learning through play, especially if learning is made to be “too much fun.” According to this view, the goal is not to create fun-only environments but to create meaningful tasks, so that students take learning seriously and learn to do difficult tasks.
07
2012 Spring / International Design Program
Safe Environment
To prevent injuries and potential lawsuits there are a number of safety regulations that must be followed when designing and constructing playground equipment. There are three ways of verifying that the product fulfils with the standards needed. 1) Declaration of Conformity issued by the manufacturer. The declaration applies to a single delivered product. 2) Certificate issued by an external institution, on the basis of this product, or a precise project. The certificate shall certify that each such manufactured product complies with the standards. 3) A certificate or report issued by an external control institution, based on the control of nature, that is for every single object.
Control Playgrounds’ Center issues such documents.

Final Model Features
This conceptual illustration shows in light blue where a set of external ropes would attach to the structure These ropes are fundamental, and have been included for two reasons. There is a functional reason, as to make the whole sphere easily climbable some elements needed to be added between the structure’s cells. There is also a safety reason, as it provides multiple points for the children to grab and it is a passive safety element, just in case some falls occur.
13
The image above is a concept on how the interior of the globe would be sorted out. Kompan can use Corocord’s high quality and proved technology and know-how (as they have a fully developed roping assembly system, with all kinds of add-ons, like platforms that suit within the cells the ropes form when they are arranged in a 3-D space).
2012 Spring / International Design Program
Manufacture The idea behind this ropes and platforms assembly is to enable the children to experience a three-dimensional way of travelling from one continent to another. Each set of platforms of the same color makes a 3-D path joining two of the continents. This offers our users a challenging and exciting way of traveling from one of the continent to another. In the process, the children learn about geographics, do exercise, and have fun, all of it in the same package! It feels like a board game where the child is an alive pawn, and with some modifications other “board games could be easily made!

Evaluation
All designs where original, some created through inspiration and some designed through a number of initial sketches. For this part of the project, the engineering students had to learn the basics of drawing and being imaginative, were as it was less of a challenge for the design students of the group. Other segments of the work load took a similar turn when it came to exploring and selecting the materials. This was the engineer’s forte and a new topic for the other team members to extend their knowledge of. The final concept was selected through numerous discussions and calculating the negatives against the positives. GloBall was chosen due to the amount of positives. The product includes both educational elements with play as well as safety aspects.
The project can be explained quite simply. Once broken down, the aspects were equally divided amongst the members in group three. Each person in the group felt comfortable with the given work as it was appropriately chosen to ones existing knowledge. Many times through out the project, each member would stretch their knowledge and abilities to achieve work that wasn’t in their comfort zone. At the beginning of the project research was a must, this did not only help with the understanding but also brought the group together. Not only did the group research into the company, Kompan but other research sections including types of play and the importance of play to a child’s development. This was not only important to the Kompan project in general but especially to this target group, ‘school children’ as child development, progression and education were significant factors that needed to be a constant thought throughout the design process.

Introduction

Initial Concepts

Idea Generation
