KERRI & CALDER The couple’s first date was fishing on a creek near Crawford, Nebraska. One snowy day, Calder took Kerri back to the same spot. When he asked Kerri to pick a fly out of his tackle box, he got on one knee and asked her to stay hooked on him forever. “Start planning early,” Kerri said, “it makes the entire planning process less stressful.” Starting early meant they had time to plan thoughtful details throughout the day. Kerri’s grandparents celebrated their 61st anniversary on the day of the wedding, so the couple had a special cake cutting to celebrate. Full-service planners attend appointments with you and keep everything running smoothly, including on the big day. On the other hand, consulting and “day-of” services are an affordable option. They are less comprehensive, but are a great way to be able to relax on your big day without paying for a full-service wedding planner.

You can apply for a license in any county in South Dakota; it doesn’t have to be the one you’re getting married in. Make it easy and apply at the Register of Deeds closest to where you live or work.

To apply for a license in South Dakota, both of you must be present and bring a form of identification and your social security number with you. These are acceptable forms of ID you can take: • Driver’s license • Military ID • Certified birth certificate • Passport You can apply at any County Register of Deeds office. They will tell you who needs to sign the license and where to return it. Have someone take care of this for you, like an officiant or family member, so it doesn’t get lost.

fees and waiting periods

There is no waiting period for marriage licenses in South Dakota, and you do not have to be a resident in order to apply. You can use the license as early as the day you receive it, but it must be signed and returned no later than 90 days from the date of issue. The fee for a marriage license in South Dakota is $40. It’s best to take cash: most offices do not accept checks and may charge a fee for using a card. If you want to change your name, you will need a certified copy of the marriage license for your new driver’s license. Certified copies cost an additional $15 each. #BlackHillsBride

One of the easiest ways to blow your budget? Inviting too many guests. Each person that attends will increase your rentals, catering, beverages, and stationery, but can also require additional staff like bartenders or servers. While not required, it’s usually courteous to allow those who are contributing financially to have a say in the guest list. It’s a good idea to discuss who gets to add people to the guest list when you first sit down to discuss your budget.

Invitations SHARE THE LOVE. You’re getting ready to throw the biggest bash of your life, but no party is complete without guests! Invitations may seem easy, but don’t let them sneak up on you.

When you’re deciding on the style of your invitation suite, a good rule of thumb is to follow the formality of your wedding ceremony and reception. Having a backyard barbecue? You can send out a simple postcard if you want. Opting for a black tie affair? Feel free to pull out all the stops on an impeccably designed invitation suite.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure your invites go in the mail no later than 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding date. If you’re sending save-the-dates, you’ll want to mail them 6 months prior, or up to a year before a destination wedding. Keep in mind many local print shops can take 2-3 weeks to print invitations, and longer during busy times of year. Online designers can take up to a month or even longer!

Transportation is an important aspect of wedding arrangements that you shouldn’t overlook. From getting your wedding party to the ceremony on time to shuttles for your guests – and, of course, your grand exit from the reception – transportation plays a big role in your wedding day.

Guests often provide their own transportation, but if you’re having your ceremony and reception at different sites, provide detailed directions from one place to another. If you have guests from out of town, consider renting a shuttle or setting up a ride share system to help them all arrive on time.

STORMY & D A LT O N When they met in 2009, Stormy and Dalton became fast friends. It wasn’t until a couple years after they had graduated college and gone separate ways that their love really took off. Dalton called Stormy one day out of the blue and took her out for dinner, and it was the spark that started a romance. CASSIDY & JACK In 2019, Cassidy ran a local turkey trot race with family.
