RESEARCH In order to have a mutual standard of 'Good Stool' in our team, we design an experiment to figure out this issue.

First, we invite a person to sit on a stool without informing him our purpose, and we start to take some photos of his sitting posture. After a couple of tries, we finally had get enough data to do the analyze list. Proper height, comfortable size, the steps of people sit on a stool, are all the factors we consider in this paper.

The basic function research -

To have a mutual standard of a 'Good Stool'.

1. Most of the people cover about 80% of a chair when sitting on it.

2. According to the collected information, the most suitable radius of the stool is 175mm-150mm.

3.According to human factors, the most comfortable height of stool is 340 mm-370mm.

CONCEPT

The fundamental concept of this project is 'Freedom'. Comparison to chairs, stools owns the ability to have more changes, because of it has no restriction on its using direction. I try to use the most basic structure to define the new shape of stool.

Chair

Stool

Chairs have 'chair back', which set a limitation of using situation. However, high adaptive is the feature of stools. The user can move freely without restrictions. But traditional stools not always focus on both function and appearance.

Structure

Sketches

The most basic structure is : (Top surface) ďź‹ (Chair legs) These are the jigsaws I use to construct this product. The coming chapter going to shows product's development.

DEVELOPMENT The development from the concept frame to the real product. This is the most interesting part of the design process. Trying the find the most efficient shape to deliver my own design language to the user; Refining the initial concept and fit the original goal of 'owning powerful features and unique'.

Original source of inspiration

Use the basic element structure to try the posibilities in 2D. Simplify the shape. Go back and confirm the design purpose. Try the posibilities in 3D.

Sort out the shape and put human factors in consideration.

Final apperance

Four support points on the ground, and three on the top.

Prototype - To try the different view

FINAL DESIGN Use 3D Modeling to feel the real product, and thinking more details. For instance, the curve on the top surface, sitting stability, and balance.

Different shape in different view.

Curve To fit human's posture.

Screws Make the top surface more stable.

Pure White

Classic Black

Two main concept color system.

Rubber - Increases friction when sitting.
