God is working in Sierra Leon. Safie Braima – Sierra Leon Ministry This was Safie’s first visit back to North Carolina since Mohammed was called into the more immediate presence of our Lord and Savior. Initially, Safie was overwhelmed on how to pick up the pieces and manage four churches, a high school, a mission house and a library. You see, Mohammed was a visionary and he built all these facilities to lift up his village. Safie engaged in prayer with our Lord and Savior and asked one question: Lord help me to move forward after Mohammed’s passing. The Lord answered her prayers, she had a meeting with all the churches, school and library leaders and asked for solutions to help move Mohammed’s vision forward. They volunteered to cover each area to keep the vision going. When the school was faced with the government only paying certified teachers, the school has three certified and 11 non certified teachers, Safie negotiated with the government to pay half salary and the mission organization pay the other half. With difficulty getting teachers in rural areas they developed a plan to help teachers with lodging to attract them
Jamaican Province: The Jamaica province provided two counselors (Rev. Ruth Stephenson and Rose Williams) and one camper (Demario Jones) to Laurel Ridge during Sr. high week July 8 – 13, 2019. They provided a very uplifting spiritual and cultural experience for the campers at Laurel Ridge. They also enhanced the mission moment at NPMC by sharing their Laurel Ridge experience and sharing a spiritual musical note. This is the 16th year of Laurel Ridge requesting Counselors and a camper from the Jamaica province. Celebrating Bona Vita
“Bona Vita” is Italian for “good life”, and wow is that an appropriate name for this New Philadelphia Sunday School class! The Bona Vita class recently started a new chapter in its story as it merged with the David Jones class. So it’s an especially appropriate time to take a look back and remember some of the people and events that have made this class so special.
Johnnie Hauser is recognized and appreciated for being a constant unifying force. What a history, and what a legacy this class gives to New Philadelphia-73 years of discipleship, fellowship and community sharing the “good life”!
Summer Sunday School Continues!

Both men and women are invited to these book discussions; they are not aimed toward a particular age or gender, but it is good to have read the book before you arrive. (We’ve also had good discussions among those who might not have finished reading a book, but generally, we recommend reading it before the discussion.)
For a fourth season, the (Mostly) Southern Authors book club will discuss books that members have suggested or requested on the third Thursday of each month September to May. We meet in the Friendship Room at 6:00 p.m. and books that have been chosen by the group at the end of the previous season are discussed. We invite varied opinions and appreciate listening to different voices both in the room and in the books we read. We began as a group discussing Southern authors’ works but have branched out a bit (thus the “mostly” part of the name). We wanted to learn what was regional or specific about a work to its time and place and reader but also what is universal, applying to all of us at all times. We still look at how a work reflects us and a region and the larger world, examining the role of religion, family, time and place as contexts in our discussions. We ended last spring’s discussions with Rachel Held Evans’s Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again, and we will begin the new season with her earlier book (2015), Searching for Sunday. Some of you may have heard Sarah Bessey, Rachel Held Evans’s friend speak after the memorial to Rachel Held Evans at the Moravian Women’s conference in June.
The bookmark lists both dates and books for 2019-'20 season. We find copies of the books we read in public libraries, borrowed from friends, in used book stores and as ebooks. Bookmarks, our local independent bookstore on 4th Street offers a discount for members of the New Philly (Mostly) Southern Authors book club, and they feature the books we are reading in a display showing what local book clubs are reading. (See https://www.bookmarksnc.org/mostly-southern-authors-bookclub and contact Kay Windsor for the discount code or for more information at kehwindsor1@gmail.com). Guiding the Advent Season Advent 2018 saw the production of Good Tidings! A Guide for Advent Action. This little book contained devotions for the days of December 1 -25, and presented many ideas for serving our community. This year’s Guide will have a different focus. While there will still be a daily devotion, we’d like to add a component that will come from you. We’re wondering: • What is your favorite childhood memory of Christmas? • What Christmas gift do you still remember fondly? • What seasonal traditions do you still celebrate? • Which do you most anticipate? • Which events bring your family closest together? • Provide the most laughter? We’re collecting your stories and hope you’ll freely share what makes the Advent season special for you. Perhaps your stories will rekindle fond memories for someone else. Maybe you’ll be attracted to a tradition that you decide to adopt for yourself. Let’s give the gifts of remembrance to each other this year as we celebrate what this glorious season means to each of us.

Green Nest, and Amani are two of these. It is Amani, in fact, that will be our focus as we kick off 12 Days on Sunday, December 1, which is World AIDS Day. The Amani Children’s Foundation serves children orphaned by poverty and AIDS in Africa. Get ready for December action as we venture out into our community to make a difference. How will you live, love and serve like Jesus during the coming Advent season?
Does Your Pet Need Blessing? Sunday, October 6 is the date of New Philadelphia’s second Blessing of the Animals event. Held on the lawn in front of our sanctuary, the service will begin at 4 p.m. and is open to all pets and their owners. Last year’s event, a first, brought out more than 50 families. While dogs made up most of the pet population, cats and a fish (by proxy) were included.
The blessing of pets and animals is often celebrated on October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, or on a Sunday near that date. While often associated with the Episcopal Church, other denominations have chosen to hold a blessing service in honor of the animals who occupy important places in Please submit your stories, from one to four their owner’s lives. Service begins at home In Stretching the Soul (Revell), Ronald Wilson warns that a commitment to Christian service shouldn’t come at the price of neglecting our other responsibilities — namely our families. “If we don’t serve in little ways the people we love best, we may question our motivation for serving those we don’t know as well. Service means putting ourselves below someone else, and it’s harder to do that with those we know best.”
Birthdays are unique because they celebrate who someone is, not what they’ve done. Henri Nouwen wrote, “It is more important to celebrate a birthday than a successful exam, a promotion or a victory. Because to celebrate a birthday means to say to someone, ‘Thank you for being you.’ ... On a birthday we do not say, ‘Thanks for what you did, or said, or accomWilson writes: “We can’t serve our family plished.’ No, we say, ‘Thank you for being born if we’re not home.
