new philly news A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM NEW PHILADELPHIA MORAVIAN CHURCH Besides taking small steps toward regathering for inperson worship, fellowship and study, we have practiced If you have tuned into our Worship Services over the past resilience in finding new ways of keeping connected and two Sundays (December 13 and December 20) you have involved in worship and study while also trying to safely experienced the first two parts of a “Light of Christ Trilo- care for our neighbors and our congregation. Light of Christ Trilogy Written by: Sam Gray

On the third Sunday in Advent, I began the trilogy with a sermon on John 1:6 – 8, where we heard a man named John bearing witness to the True Light. John told the people gathered on the other side of the Jordan River that the Light was already among them but they just didn’t realize it or recognize it. That Sunday I invited all of you to send in your “seeing the Light of Christ among us” stories. Fifteen of you responded and I shared those amazing stories on Sunday, December 20 (part two of the “Light of Christ Trilogy”).

This coming Sunday, December 27, Clyde Manning will complete the trilogy by reading from John 1:10 – 18, and sharing stories about the light of Christ shining in and through many of you! My prayer is that these reflections on (and of) the light will illuminate our path as we enter a new year. On Sunday, January 3rd, I will preach on “The Promise and Presence of the Lord” (Jeremiah 31:7- 14) and on Sunday, January 10, we will celebrate Holy Communion in observance of the Epiphany. I look forward to discerning and living into all that God has in store for us in 2021.

Elders Update Written by: Kay Windsor Updates from the Board of Elders

Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and the physical distancing we have practiced, our Board of Elders continues to look to the vision statement: New Philadelphia seeks to be an open and caring Christian congregation in the Moravian tradition, worshiping God and honoring the scripture, while encouraging one another to live, love, and serve like Jesus as we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Sam Gray, Evie Blum, Clyde Manning, Steve Gray, Michael Westmoreland, Dave Blum, Sandra Gray, Carol Garber, Jane Shore, Terri Queen, Bill Donald, Frank Nifong, Jerry Tucker, and several other musicians have brought us meaningful worship each week, a few at a time, through livestreamed services. Services are streamed on the New Philadelphia Moravian Facebook page and also saved on YouTube (New Philadelphia Moravian Church Winston-Salem channel) for later viewing. A recent Sunday showed more than 1200 views of a worship service. Recordings of handbells, mission moments and middle and high school youth have been added to the livestreamed services. The prerecorded lovefeast aired at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve with lovefeast bags available on Christmas Eve morning in the parking lot (or delivered to homebound) was full of the light of Christ, available for all to share and shine. Members who are homebound or who do not use email have been contacted during the pandemic by Elders and Acolytes to share information, to deliver communion kits, just to share a word of cheer as a continuing part of the spiritual care of our congregation. A Zoom for listeners (those without email or computers) is a sharing of the Sunday morning livestreamed worship as well as a small fellowship gathering (virtually, by phone). The recent addition of two tablets and two hotspots for lending may bring more viewing possibility to some of these members. (See the tech buddies item in this newsletter for more detail.) Committees, Teams and Gatherings. Justice and Reconciliation Team, formed in response to the call for a renewed focus on the Statement on Racism made by the Southern Province in 1998, meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. to share conversation and action toward understanding racial, cultural and ethnic reconciliation and the work in progress in the Moravian Church. Regathering Team Update

Look for a meeting time and manner of meeting for congregational council during this first quarter of 2021 to elect new members for the Board of Elders and the Board of Trustees. Candidates for Board Members Needed Consider serving on one of the boards to help guide our church. Board members currently serve for a three-year term, then wait for two years before being nominated for another term. Nominating Committee members are those from both boards who are in the third year of their terms and who have now extended their service into 2021: April Greenwood, Frank Chitty, Nancy Renn, Tina Spach from Elders and Alan Barber, Brad Pitts, Chris Rogers and Ron Tedder from Trustees. April Greenwood and Chris Rogers are co-chairing the committee. If you are willing to serve on either of the boards, please contact Chris or April at chrisjrogers31@gmail.com or aprilcgreenwood@gmail.com or talk to any other member of the Nominating Committee.

As some have gathered for worship in person, beginning in October, we have used the guidelines that follow: Usually on Tuesday of each week, an open registration link appears on newphilly.org. If you have a temperature greater than 99.5, any symptoms or recent exposure to coronavirus, or you are over 65 with underlying conditions, we appreciate your caring for yourself and others by not attending in person. We will continue to livestream (and save) the service on the New Philadelphia Moravian Church Facebook page and YouTube page for viewing. We will continue to offer the Zoom for listeners for those without computers or mobile devices. Please arrive between 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. for the 10 a.m. service. Use the center Sanctuary/narthex entrance (front door) and stay at least six feet away from the persons waiting to be seated. Ushers will admit you, then seat you. You may pick up an order of worship before entering the sanctuary. (Yes, this does mean keeping your mask on while inside the building.)

In all of this time, may our question continue to be, “How can we be God’s church, right here, right now? How can we love our neighbors and show God’s love and light to all?”

Mostly Southern Writers Book Club Written by Jerrie Andrews

We enjoyed an extra special New Philly book club zoom in December. Mona Ketner played Christmas carols on her piano at the beginning and end of our meeting. The music was beautiful and spread Christmas cheer throughout our group. We all enjoyed the book, The Further Adventures of Ebenezer Scrooge and agreed that Charlie Lovett had written a story that was timely and relevant. Our discussion included appreciating what we have and wondering about ways our post-COVID-19 lives and priorities may look different from our pre-COVID-19 existence. Here are the picks so far for 2021:

South Fork Elementary Coat Drive Written by Marla Sparks Last year, because of the generosity of our congregation, we collected 77 new and gently used coats for the students at South Fork Elementary School. Due to the economic effects of the Corona virus, the need is even greater this year.

January 21: All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren

February 18: Fair and Tender Ladies by Lee Smith

March 18: A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Fowler

We extend an invitation to all to join our group. Our discussions are lively and thoughtful and we are looking forward to reading a varied and interesting selection of books in 2021. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at 5:45pm. For now we are meeting on Zoom but will resume meeting at the church as soon as able. If you would like additional information or to be placed on our email list please contact: Jerrie Andrews by email: jerrieandrews@yahoo.com

As you finish your shopping or clean out your child's closet to make space for new clothes, please think about the South Fork Scholars, as the new principal, Dr. GreenHughes, calls her students and help them stay warm this winter. Coats for pre-school children through 5th graders are needed. Coats can be dropped off at designated spots 4

New Friendship Sunday School News Written by Beth Byrd The New Friendship Sunday School class meets every Sunday via Zoom from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. We have consistently enjoyed averaging 20 class members each week. Through January 17, 2021, we will continue studying a curriculum called "New Testament Characters." In it, we learn about some lesser-known characters of the New Testament. Typically, the study presents a few pieces of scripture with plentiful discussion questions. Our discussion is always insightful. We welcome any visitors who are just looking for some community in which to discuss our faith. There is no commitment to join! We'd just love to have you visit. Send an email to Beth Byrd at ebyrd797@gmail.com to obtain the Zoom link.

For months, school-aged children have used our facilities for supervision and help with online school through the oversight of Imprints Cares, a local nonprofit that aims to help children and parents. We have continued to livestream video of our worship services when it was the only way we could participate in worship and when we have begun to have a few attend in person. People have been able to join us from New Jersey, Missouri, Jamaica, widening our connection. Our small group of dedicated sound and video technicians ( primarily Michael Crotts, Valerie Crane, Eric Bradley) have helped us every single Sunday.

We have used Zoom videoconferences and chats each week since late March to study scripture (Glimpse), to meet with Sunday School classes, for board meetings (at least 30 times, once even managing to connect during an international Zoom outage), for committee and team meetings, for children’s and youth programs, for choir After Christmas, the class will decide whether we can and handbell gatherings, for confirmation classes and safely proceed with the annual Pine Needles sale tradimore. Troop 715 Update Written by: Prakash Keeley, Troop Scribe Due to CDC COVID-19 guidelines, Troop 715 has had to adapt to stay safe and continue meeting. We are now only outside with everybody wearing masks and socially distancing. Half of the troop meets at the Scout Hut while the other half has a meeting on Zoom. The next meeting the two groups alternate. We are also going on socially distanced campouts. For example, in November the troop went to the Outer Banks and did lots of fun activities like fishing. The troop also cleaned the campsite behind the church to prepare it for a day of challenges with the Webelos. All of the campouts and activities complied with the CDC COVID-19 guidelines. The troop will continue to meet in person next year as allowed by the church and consistent with recommended guidelines. Trips and other activities will be evaluated on a case by case basis to ensure any participation is safe for all involved.

Aging Well in a Pandemic World Getting A Good Night’s Sleep We all crave sleep – just like we hunger and thirst, we have the need for sleep. Sleep strengthens our immune systems, our memories, and our ability to learn. Seven to eight hours of sleep a night is considered optimum and restorative. As we age, getting a good night’s sleep can become more difficult. We have more trouble quieting our minds, forgetting all the bad news, and turning off the day. Researchers estimate that about half of adults over the age of 65 have sleep issues. Sleep problems can significantly interfere with older adults’ daily activities and reduce our quality of life. We have to learn to think and act like good sleepers.
