New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk I am writing this during Holy Week, before Easter. You will not read it until after Easter. By the time you read this, time will have passed, and the future will be history.
future that is coming to us in him. Because he lives, we will live also, and we do live, and we live at his pleasure, and for him, in a way we could not in the dark and awful time before God opened heaven just a crack, and showed us a glimpse of the future in the risen and exalted Christ.
The ancient Jews waited for the arrival of the Messiah, “The Lord is risen!” and for a resurrection that would take place at the end of history. The righteous dead would be raised to “The Lord is risen indeed!” life, and the unrighteous to judgement. Our human appeal for justice would be answered. Those who had I hope you have a blessed Easter for the rest of your patiently practiced well-doing would be rewarded. life, in this world, and in the next. Those who had ignored the needs of their neighbors, or trampled upon them, would be judged and punished. ~ When Jesus came, he was an unlikely Messiah. The Jews expected a conquering hero, who would lead his people into a new day of prosperity, and, ultimately, into resurrection and Eternal Life. However, the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. The crucifixion was the world’s rejection of the Servant. The resurrection was the stamp of God’s approval upon his life and sacrificial death, revealing him as the heavenly “Son of Man” of Daniel who receives the kingdom from the ancient of days, and, as St. Paul would say, “He was designated Son of God in power, through a Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead.” (Romans 1:4)
The Pastor
In Jesus the future has become history. In Jesus a little bit of the end of time has been broken off and made manifest in the midst of history. He is the first fruits, the first born from the dead that in all things he might have preeminence. Though our personal “resurrection,” must wait upon his revelation in Glory, or upon our being called home to him (they are two sides of the same coin), by faith we live in the light of that first Easter Dawn. The tomb was empty, and for a period of forty days Jesus showed himself alive by many proofs to his disciples, and in at least one instance, to one who persecuted his disciples. We live in the history of Jesus, and of his death, for us, and of his resurrection. Yet we also live from the

Missions and Social Concerns Cuba Mission: Joe Jarvis shared some historical facts on Cuba. Bruce Ledwith provided an update on current projects and Evon Crooks shared some history on the children of Cuba and his sermon at a Presbyterian Church in Sparta North Carolina. Historical facts, Cuba is approximately 42,000 square miles, with a population of just over 11 million people. The capital city of Havana has just over 2 million people. Life expectancy for Cubans is 78.2 years. The literacy rate in Cuba is currently 98%, one of the highest in the world. Thoughout Cuba’s history they have never had democratic elections, they have been ruled by one dictator after another. Fidel Castro was president from 1959 to 2008. Raul Castro became president in 2008 and instituted some reforms which allowed Cubans to own small business and property. Currently the majority of the congregations worship in homes, garages or back yards. There is a great need to purchase property to create sanctuary for worship. Armando is negotiating the purchase of a house in Jaquey Grande for approximately $20,000. This will require renovation into a sanctuary at additional cost. There are also negotiations to purchase another building in Santayana for approximately $10, 000, renovations would be required. Renovation of the Comenius Children’s Center is near completion. The dedication is tentatively schedule for the end of May 2016. This center will service approximately 100 youth. Another water purification system will be installed in Santayana during the May/June trip along with some adjustments to one of the previously installed system. Operation “Pedro Pan” shaped the lives of a generation of Cuban-America. Between 1960 and 1962 this program air lifted more than 14, 000 Cuban children from Havana to the US, mostly Miami. Fifty + years later those children are recalling how the flight to the US changed their lives. This journey began in 1959 after Batista fled the country and Fidel Castro arrived in Havana. The fear of Cuba moving to a totalitarian direction led Father Bryan Walsh a priest in Miami to work out an arrangement with the State Department that allowed him to sign visa wavers for children under 16. These children were received in
Page 3 the homes of many families in the US, some never to see their parents again. At the same time when Castro revolution took over Cuba with a literacy rate of 74%, Castro thought this was unacceptable. So, Castro drafted a plan where all students 14 to 15 years old were summoned to go out to the rural areas of the country where the literacy rate was the worst. He asked them to leave their homes and live with host families. They were each given a lantern because there was no electricity in the countryside at that time. These young people worked in the fields with their host family during the day and teach them to read and write at night. Over 100,000 students stepped up to this cause. Within 12 months the literacy rate increased from 74 to 95%. Today the literacy rate in Cuba is 98%. Meeting and speaker schedule set through April: i.January 10, 2016, Ray of Hope, Michael and Ceci Tesh ii.February 14, 2016, Greener Pastures Ministries, Dennis Caudle iii.March 20, 2016, Cuba Mission, Joe Jarvis iv.April 10, 2016, Coalition for Drug Abuse Prevention, Ava Troxler Mission moment schedule: 1.February 14, 2016 - Tiffany Wood/Grace Shut – Homeless Shelter 2.February 21, 2016 – Susan Cook – Medical mission in Haiti 3.March 2016 – None 4.April 10, 2016 – Ava Troxler 2016 Budget and disbursements for February: 1.Total budget $54,440 2.Balance as of February 29, 2016 $28,120.29 3.March disbursement approvals, Michael and Caroline Woo’s ministry in China $3000, ARMF Cuba mission $2500.
