Sounds Of Paramo Interview by: Juan Casco

Photography : Pablo Naranjo

What is EVHA? How was the project born? EVHA, El Viejo Hombre de los Andes, ( The Old Man of the Andes), is born from the need of its members to find a sound identity that represents their cultural heritage, hence it is an audiovisual project that articulates elements of Ecuadorian music with electronic soundscapes. "The Old Man of the Andes" is the name of a huge cactus that grows only in the Andean region and looks like an old man covered in white hair. From this being we create a mystical character between human, reptile and vegetable, with cangahua skin, as old as time. When we composed the album we dressed as this character and related our experiences through his eyes.

Who is part of this band and what is their background? The project consists of four musicians and a visual artist. Alejandro Mendoza (Synths) Sebastian Schmiedl (Percussion) Renata Nieto (Singer) Mateo Kingman (Singer) MartĂn Calderon (Visuals) All the members come from different regions of Ecuador, from where they extract the different sounds that give color to the music.

RENATA NIETO

UiUĂ

What are the rhythms with which you work? The album narrates several stories that take place in the different regions of Ecuador, which join as tributaries to form a single river that does not stop from its beginning to its end, like the album itself that has no pauses between songs. Our music is a blend of in colors San Juan, Yumbo, Bambuco, Bomba, Albazo, and more Ecuadorian genres. Sometimes we mix them all.

Sebastian Schmiedl

Culebra de Monte

What do you have planned for the future? At this moment we have some trips planned to play outside the country, the closest is to Mexico. We are also launching a very colorful EP with influences from different regions of Ecuador. We expect to release the first single in June.

Alejandro Mendoza

Todo su cuerpo brilla

Where have you been on your Pรกramo Tour and where will you go next? We started the tour in Cuenca, then we left for Buenos Aires, Montevideo, then we returned to Quito for Saca El Diablo festival. In May we were in Mexico City and Puebla and in July we will travel to Europe.

MATEO KINGMAN

Caminar a donde sea

How has the new audience received your music? We feel that our music has been received well by audiences of different ages. The older people get hooked on the traditional elements of our music, while the young people enjoy the electronic, and this has generated a bridge between generations.

ADRIA ALVARADO ADRIA ALVARADO Between Myth And Realism

Interview by: Juan Casco Translation by: Miguel Vargas

At only 18 years, Adria Alvarado, artist from Peru, has made magnificent paintings.

When did you start painting? I started drawing lines on surfaces since I can remember. However, I started painting seriously three years ago when I was 15. I practice every single day between 3 to 4 hours a day..

Is your technique based on hyperrealism? Or how would you call it? If you are asking me now, I don’t think that my paintings reach the levels of hyperrealism, and probably they will not even in the future. I put in lots of effort to obtain a clean and realistic effect, but each painting has a dose of both marks similar to veins and wildness technique. Hyperrealism demands lots of patience and prudence. The time a drawing takes to dry, the thorough movement of the brush are like magic. But, I don't have too much patience. That is the reason why many pieces of art have the main character very neat, but the background and secondary elements are sort of transparent and fuzzy. I learned how to internalize the unconscious path that a brush takes. This is my perspective at least for now. Though we know that art mutates and partial, so I don’t know what is going to happen in a few years.

“I started drawing lines on surfaces since I can remember.

What are the topics you focus on? I am focused on a topic known as fantasy, and everything that it means. I have planned to explore not only with the altered human figure, but also with the creation of mythological characters and all the topics related to it. This genre of painting allows viewers to access an infinite number of possibilities. Each viewer can accept or reject each possibility, but he is obligated to consider each of these possibilities at least for a moment.

How do you feel about the process you have followed? What have you learned or changed? During the last year, I have undergone huge changes. I began creating paintings and illustrations from scratch. I started exploring with oil painting and watercolor based on anatomic and illumination references. Working this way takes much more time and it is very complicated, but I believe this is the way to start building your own brush style and aesthetic.

Lifestyle and portrait photography, emphasizing natural light I like to work with organic elements, scenes that project life, spiritual freedom and free will. It is a challenge to take a picture of human emotions. Connecting with the real person to the other side of the camera is very challenging, but I love taking people to the scenes in which they can discover themselves on both, what they can achieve while waiting for me to take the picture and how they feel when they see the final results.

Photography turns out to be a process in which one can know oneself, and it also takes you to give more of you every time, to experiment more with facial expressions as an extension of the individual process of present. Usually as humans, we don’t face too much tests, but photography has taken me to encounter these tests where you can create a connection with the subject, a.k.a. model, in order to keep experimenting at the intersection of corporal language, environment, nature and aesthetic.

WITSAJA

The Festival That Reinvigorated The Voice Of The Sapara Nation Over 3000 visitors attended Witsaja, a festival celebrating the Sapara language, between March 22 and 24 in the city of Puyo, Ecuador. The event’s purpose was to teach visitors about the Sapara nationality’s culture and worldview, as well as to spread consciousness of the importance of preserving languages at risk of dying out. Witsaja was organized by the Global Center of Happiness and the Government Board of the Sapara nation of Ecuador, and many members of the Sapara community travelled from communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle to manage and participate in the festival.

Over the three days of festivities, visitors had the opportunity to learn about dream interpretation, medicinal plant uses, arts and crafts, traditional foods, daily life in Sapara communities, and the history of the Sapara nationality. Visitors also enjoyed watching live performances of song and dance.

A future for the Sapara For organizers of the event, Witsaja was a means of providing visitors a small window into the depths of Sapara ancestral knowledge and the benefits that such knowledge can offer to the world. The event was also a means of mobilizing outside support for revitalization of the Sapara language, intercultural child education within the communities, and for the Sapara’s territorial struggle against petroleum companies.
