The Adventure Stage and Racer Alley have moved across Point Hudson with more space to showcase adventures great and small. Kids’ Cove has moved out to The Point where we can provide lots of open air and space, not to mention incredible views of the bay and the Festival. Journey back in time aboard replicas of Captain George Vancouver’s boats from 1792. Work together as a crew to row and sail aboard these 26’ open boats with 8 rowing stations. Ages 12 and up. Signups start at 9:00 AM each morning at the longboat dock in the NE corner of the marina. The boats go out 3 times a day for approximately 1.5 hour trips.

A pioneer of long-distance voyaging and longtime Wooden Boat Festival icon, Lin Pardey is most certainly the real deal. Since the 1960s, Lin has accrued more than 217,000 sea miles sailing on boats ranging from 24 feet to more than 60, the majority without engines on two wooden cutters she and her husband Larry built: Serafin and Taleisin. Lin and Larry have been called “the first couple of cruising” and started the mantra “Go simple, go small, go now.” Lin is the author of 12 books and countless articles on cruising and her adventurous life with Larry, who passed away in 2020. Now based in New Zealand, Lin continues to voyage and share her expertise with others around the world. She has just been inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame - the first cruising sailor to be so honored and only one of a handful of women.

Nigel Calder is best known for his books Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual, and Marine Diesel Engines, both considered the definitive works of their field. In addition to over 200 magazine articles, he has also authored a Cruising Guide to the Northwest Caribbean, Cuba: A Cruising Guide, Nigel Calder’s Cruising Handbook and How to Read a Nautical Chart. Nigel has always had a fascination for all things mechanical - prior to becoming a full-time writer, he worked on automotive assembly lines, in foundries and machine shops, and on offshore oil production platforms. Nigel, his wife Terrie, and their two kids have sailed extensively in Europe and the North Atlantic on a variety of boats. He is currently on the editorial teams of PassageMaker, Professional Boatbuilder, Sail, and Ocean Navigator magazines and a consultant on marine energy issues.

Steve Callahan brings a uniquely harrowing experience to the Wooden Boat Festival. During a transatlantic crossing in 1982, his small sloop sunk and he spent 76 days lost at sea—an ordeal described in riveting detail in his best-selling book Adrift, published in 2002. The book has become a model chronicle for sea adventures. Steve consulted on the movie The Life of Pi, and his story will be the feature of the upcoming documentary 76 Days. A

s anyone with a wooden boat will tell you, owning one is like having another member of the family. A little highmaintenance, yes, but strong and beautiful, with captivating stories and the scars to go with them. Not to mention the kind of charisma that would induce you to expend a nice weekend going through stacks of sandpaper and picking bugs out of wet varnish.

Over time, the boat’s legacy—its stories, its sorrows and triumphs, where it has been and who it has carried—becomes an integral part of its value. The time and the money put in become an investment in the care of something precious and beloved, not part of a return-on-investment calculation with some hoped-for profitable outcome (ha).

It’s no surprise that when it comes time to sell a wooden boat after investing all that care, you want to find someone who shares those values.

Dave and Rosemary Lesser were enchanted by traditional canoe yawls: their simplicity, fitness for purpose, and functionality for a small crew in any conditions. Working with Paul Gartside over several years, they refined the design for La Vie en Rose—a 40-foot cold-molded wooden yawl that fuses the traditional and the modern, perfectly outfitted to take them on the cruising adventures they’d dreamed of. Jespersen Boat Builders completed the boat in 2012 and the Lessers spent six summers living aboard, exploring Puget Sound and the British Columbia coast all

When Rosemary was elected to the Utah legislature in early 2020, the Lessers knew it was time to find a new steward for La Vie en Rose. They wanted people to continue to enjoy learning to cruise, with some assurance that the new owners would be committed to keeping her in tip-top condition. When the Lesssers offered to donate the boat to the Northwest Maritime Center, Executive Director Jake Beattie was thrilled, but knew he had to do some due diligence to be sure the organization was up to this responsibility of stewardship. The Lessers were relieved to see a knowledgeable group “doing the math” and validating that the boat would be cared for long-term. After some paperwork and a celebratory splash in early 2022, La Vie en Rose begins her first season this year as part of NWMC’s educational fleet, gathering new memories and building a new legacy as she continues to the next phase of her life.

They’ve now entirely replaced the transom (where Mandy hand painted the name in elegant script), repaired key planking, updated the transmission, added a crab-pot-puller, a new stove for wintry crabbing days, and more. June has grown up on the boat, and now at age 9 has had more success fishing than many of us can hope for. The family has explored Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, and has aspirations to take the boat farther afield as time, resources, and family obligations permit.

A couple of recent owners had not had the time or inclination to keep her in fine fettle but luckily for Henrietta, Luke, his wife Mandy, and daughter June were looking for a wooden boat that they could pour their hearts into.

In 2007, Miles met Tupper Griffith while working with Robert D’Arcy (Tupper’s brother-in-law) on more restoration work for Sharon L. Tupper impressed him with his commitment to fine craftsmanship, and his family connection to the marine trades. Tupper recalls, “The more I started crawling around the boat–I thought WOW. She’s simple, comfortable, home like–I really liked this boat!” Miles recalled, “By that time I was thinking it was time to move along. Tupper looked me in the eye and said, “would you consider selling this boat to me?” I only had to think for a minute - yes I would!”

Fifteen years later, Tupper, his wife Korie, and son Owen still call Sharon L a part of their family. Tupper said, “Thanks to Miles and all the care he always gave her, she’s in really sound shape!” Owen, now 12, recently committed to helping his dad with ongoing maintenance, and the family looks forward to stewarding the boat’s story for many more years to come!

When Seattle engineer Luke Seever first saw Henrietta, he was really in the market for a fast fiberglass fishing boat. But he was drawn to her classic lines and a boatwright friend inspired him to take a closer look. “I got convinced that wooden boats weren’t all bad, and might even be good! There’s this incredible community around them that switched it from something impossible for me to something desirable.”

Luke wanted to learn to care for the boat himself, and worked alongside John Thomas (Thomas Boat Repair) who was willing to share his expertise with an eager and committed pupil. “The fact that you can do that in this community is amazing,” Luke remembered. “You come in with a little humility and people are excited to share what they know and pass on the love of the craft.”

Afteryears. the war, Miles and his father reconnected by working together taking care of the boat, and as a young man Miles moved to West Sound on Orcas Island, and lived aboard for a number of years. They operated a charter business which became an Orcas Island institution for more than 25 years, and raised 2 children with his wife Louellen and Sharon L as a member of the family. A 1987 restoration, including a deck replacement and resfastening, was costly, but

Miles McCoy spent a lot of time hanging around the docks and yards of Lake Union as a boy in the 1930s and 40s. Having taught himself to sail and made friends with boatowners, keepers, and builders as a selfproclaimed “water rat,” he had a ready-made community of advisors when he bought the 1932 Alden catboat Sharon Lin 1945. These included Norm Blanchard (whose yard built the boat and who was concerned that Miles was cutting school!), who agreed to work alongside him to replace the cockpit, the water tanks, and re-bed the canvas that covered the house. Thus began Sharon L’s membership in the McCoy family, one that lasted more than 60

ver the past 150+ years, our region has become the adopted home of many people from around the world, some of whom have brought their own maritime traditions to our waters, adding to the rich maritime culture and technology of the indigenous people of the Salish Sea.

BUILDING A BATANA: A SYMBOL OF CROATIAN HERITAGE IN PUGET SOUND

WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL 2022– 16 –

In the 19th and 20th centuries, war, disease and diminishing resources ravaged the mainland and island of what is now known as the Republic of Croatia—formerly part of Yugoslavia. People who had lived among the islands of the Dalmatian Coast for generations brought their rich heritage of fishing, shipbuilding, and voyaging halfway around the world as they sought out opportunity, peace, and a new place to call home.

As early as the 1850s, Croatian immigrants’ maritime endeavors and industries were popping up around Puget Sound, with a special concentration in the South Sound. Emerging settlements on Vashon Island, around Gig Harbor, and in Tacoma gave birth to enterprises such as Barbara Bros. Shipbuilders, Martinolich Shipyard, Skansie Shipbuilding Co., J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Western Boat Building Co., and Kazulin Boat Co., among many others. Croatians were innovators in boat construction, commercial fishing, and seafood processing and were also the first to add motors to fishing boats, to employ ice to keep the catch fresh at sea.

Sustaining a Rich Tradition

One of the project’s goals is to help highlight and sustain Croatian traditions in Gig Harbor and throughout Puget Sound. Throughout, they will gather even more maritime stories—histories of Croatian fishing and boatbuilding families that have been in Puget Sound for more than 150 years, the stories of their contributions to maritime industries, and how our area’s salmon runs and old-growth forests helped them develop thriving working waterfront communities. The team is excited to share these stories (and gather more of them) at Wooden Boat Festival.

Although much has changed over the years, substantial Croatian maritime influence remains within the boats and the people that continue to maintain and preserve the proud traditions of our working waterfronts. The construction of the wooden Croatian fishing skiff batana is being undertaken in memory and gratitude for those that came before us. But also as a reminder of how important the natural resources of the Pacific Northwest were to our ancestors, and how important they need to remain for future generations.

and Gig Harbor Boatshop, master shipwright, fisherman, and Tacoma native Mike Vlahovich has been building a batana—a Croatian flat-bottom fishing skiff which is a variant of design once common to the Northern Adriatic. His project began in July 2022 and can be seen in the Boatshop just inside MainThisGate.istruly a project of international collaboration. The plans for the batana were donated by the Batana ECO Museum of Rovinj, Croatia, an organization listed in the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for its dedication to the preservation of this design and its fishing heritage. Port Townsend’s Pacific Northwest Timbers has donated reclaimed Douglas fir for the boat’s construction—reusing quality lumber that may have still been “on the stump” when Croatians first arrived in the Pacific Northwest. The Artful Sailor is making a traditional lugs’l finished in the traditional Croatian checkerboard pattern. And finally, the Northwest Maritime Center’s Boatshop will build the batana’s spars using reclaimed lumber from the Schooner Martha mast project.

It felt like a no-brainer that I had to meet her and her box

illian Kuehl is no newbie to racing or even Race to Alaska. In 2019, previously known as Team Quilbillians, she pedaled her way to the finish line with her father and uncle on their custom-made 27-foot boat.

Arriving in the nick of time, I finally introduced myself to Lillian as she settled into Dave’s boathouse (her boyfriend and previous racer for SEVENTY48). Despite her double fisting a cup of coffee and a shot of espresso, preparing herself for the caffeine, she appeared as cool as a cucumber, somehow making me feel anxious for the race. Her laid back demeanor made it clear that racing and all things boat-related coursed through her veins.

kit boat in person. A 3-hour drive to Seattle, I started to question my GPS until I found myself in front of a row of boathouses on a dead-end street. Yep, this is definitely where a racer would live.

Post-pandemic, Lillian was back and ready for the 2022 race—but with a new name, new team, new approach, and new boat. Going by the name Team Interstice, Lillian competed in the race solo, paddling a boat built from a kit.

“Okay, I’ve got to ask, why do you want to do this race?” I questioned. I watched her casually shrug. “I

choose to build your boat from a kit?” I finally asked the question that radiated in my mind.

was born to suffer,” she replied, elaborating that she thrives on endurance racing that doesn’t rely on the wind. Understanding how far she could row in a day was another appealing factor.

The nonchalance of her answer didn’t convince me that this was just chance. Having completed several races in the past—with her family, no less—and being a business owner of one (for now), working on vessels, knowing her craft is in her blood.

I chuckled, but I also knew she 100% meant it. “Alright, I have to ask a follow-up. Why are you racing solo this time?” A humble grin crossed her face as she retold her R2AK experience with her family—stressing her need to want to do things on her terms, on her schedule, and without anyone slowing her down. “And, besides, I find racing solo easier. I don’t have to synchronize my movements.”

“What exactly happened back in 2019?” I couldn’t help myself from prying. Lillian smiled again, “Let’s just say it was a very mentally challenging race.”

Interrupting a leisurely morning, Lillian finished her coffee(s) before driving us to Fisheries Supply. I followed behind like a paparazzo as she chatted with the staff she knew by name before deftly navigating the store with confidence—the kind of confidence only someone who owns their own business repairing and upgrading recreational vessels would have.

Afterward, we finally arrived at Dave’s storage unit. The doors opened; fumes wafted out as the sunlight lit up a bright canary-colored boat hanging upside down, nearly dry from its second UV coating. My eyes lit up as I envisioned its bright contrast out on the water. This color is going to be perfect for photographing!

Editor’s note: Lillian successfully completed SEVENTY48, and made it as far as Bella Bella in the Race To Alaska. She ended her journey with the text message “Sorry friend; my heart of hearts says, go home.”

“I didn’t find one I liked, so I ordered one online,” Lillian casually explained. “Although, in hindsight, perhaps if we’d kept an eye out, we would have found one, and I would have gotten more training in, but c’est la vie,” she adds.

Northwest Maritime Center’s annual extravaganza of human-powered boating yet again graced the waters of Puget Sound, June 10-12, 2022. Eighty nine teams made it from Tacoma to Port Townsend in under 48 hours through the strength of their muscles alone: by paddle, row, or pedal (in one case). More than a few racers used wooden boats, and in many cases, they had built them themselves. There was no award for “fastest wooden boat,” but the first to cross the finish line was the pedal-powered Boogie Barge

For going on four generations, the Hanke family has worked together creating port-based businesses and volunteering in our community. Peter and Sue Hanke launched their first charter business in 1981 and later founded Puget Sound Express with their son Pete and his wife Sherri. Their operations have expanded over the years and now inspire over 20,000 people to get out on the water and connect with our region’s marine life.

In addition, Peter has volunteered driving boats including the M/V Lotus, and Sue served on the board of the Wooden Boat Foundation. A native of Southern California, Steve’s boyhood love of sailing drew him to a career in boatbuilding, and later to the Pacific Northwest. He began his career as a finish carpenter in Costa Mesa in 1964, and after his return from naval service in Vietnam, he started moving northward, working in sales, commissioning, and yacht repair, and developing a skill for high-quality, custombuilt boats. In 1977, Steve founded Schooner Creek Boat Works building everything from 7-foot rowing prams to the 42-foot ULDB sailboat Magic Carpet, where he pioneered wood construction over a foam core for high strength and low weight.

Steve has led more than 70 projects including the Alden Schooner Tiama , Robert Perry-designed powerboats, cruising sailboats, and the 60-foot sloop Ocean Planet which has completed two singlehanded circumnavigations. Along the way, Steve has managed to sustain his love of sailing as well, having completed 21 trans-Pacific crossings, one race to Tahiti, and more than 75,000 offshore and coastal miles under sail.

Straight-talking empath, sometimes boatyard agitator, and salty raconteur, Diana has been a listener, planner, leader, and mentor to many since arriving here in 1990. As one of the first woman shipwrights/boat shop owners in Port Townsend, her work space, Taku Marine, served as headquarters for the “coconut wireless” for boatyard news, port politics, and career and boat owner transitions.

Jim Franken spent his earliest years surrounded by boats and voyaging in waters around the world. In 1978, he arrived in Port Townsend and landed a job at Admiral Marine. Jim later taught lofting and design at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, and he designed several boats built by the school including the gaff cutter Bryony.

In 1987, Jim started his own design and lofting business of boats large and small. He is a patient and thoughtful guy who is always willing to share his experience and knowledge with fellow boat lovers.

Dave arrived in Port Townsend during Festival in 1978. He worked at numerous yards, out of his truck in the Boat Haven, progressed to General Manager of Admiral Marine Works, and ultimately was a founder and the CFO of Townsend Bay Marine from 1999 to 2015. He served for eight years on the City Council (four as mayor) and has dedicated years of service to Maritime non-profits.

Diana served on numerous boards and committees, ran as a candidate for Port Commission, served as Shipwrights’ Regatta Goddess, presented as Festival faculty, and co-founded the PTMTA.

Seattle, PatamarWA is a mid-’30s bridge-deck cruiser that was built by a Boeing engineer in Wallingford. The hull is red cedar over white oak frames with a teak cabin and original canvas decks.

Que Será is hull number 11 of a limited production run of 19 K43 Sloops built by Kettenburg Marine, San Diego, in the mid-1960s. To our knowledge, she is one of three K43s built with teak decks, house, and cockpit.

Sir Isaac is a custom-built, cold-molded schooner rigged for short-handed offshore sailing. She’s more of a modern design for easy and efficient handling.

Seattle, SerenityWA is a restored 1951 34’ Chris Craft cruiser. The hull was painted black by a previous owner. All of the mechanics are modern. It has a 1962 Chevy small block 327 engine.

Plywood-planked trailer boats were the rage in the late 1940s and 1950s as lumber companies pushed easy-to-build DIY boat plans and kits to increase plywood sales.

Solitude III 2012

Scout is a John-Carlson design, Sam Devlin-built 23’ raised deck cruiser. In 2018, 3’ were added to the stern and Devlin repainted her. Scout’s cabin has V-berths, a wood stove, and sink.

Riptide is a classic bridge-deck cruiser built in Seattle during the 1920s. She’s hosted three marriages, moonlight cruises, and longer voyages throughout the Puget Sound, Salish Sea, and Alaska in her happy life.

Silva Bans is a replica of an 1840 British Cutter designed for fishing off the west coast where the harbors were so full of boats, they had to steeve their bowsprits to fit or drag her up the beach on logs with human-powered windlasses as she has a full keel.

Tern is a ‘70s barn-built boat from Lauren Giles blueprints of John Guzwald’s Trekka. Her home has been Orcas Island, WA, for the past 50 years.

Viking Mariner is a 54’ retired drum seiner built by Mario Tara in Ladner, B.C., in 1955 and originally christened Mar Brothers. She is currently powered by a Detroit Diesel 6-110.

South Paw is a Skipjack Knockabout gaff-rigged sloop.

The hull for the Susan Joanne was built by the owner and finished by Sam Devlin and his crew. The boat has a trailer so it could be towed north to the Inside Passage or south to California.

The Sputterbug runabout is a newly constructed, classically-styled mahogany outboard boat with accents of Alaskan yellow cedar and design elements of purple heart, sapele, and leopard wood.

Tsunami, the 8’ Tiny Titan, is a classic 3-point hydroplane race boat designed by Glen L. Witt and raced in competition races by its 12 year old co-builder.

Starlight was designed for Harvey Garett Smith in 1938 by Edwin Monk Sr. The keel was laid by Cecil M. Lange and Son in 1971. She is strip-planked Port Orford cedar on white oak frames and bronze fastened.

All the boats at Festival have wood hulls (the buoyant main body of the boat). Some are traditionally built plank-on-frame, some are modern plywood construction, and a few are built using ancient technology or the newest experimental composites

Schooner – A sailing boat with multiple sails and two to seven masts. Schooners can lie closer to the wind than square-rigged sailing ships, use a smaller crew, and are very fast.

Yawl – A twomasted sailing boat with the taller mast forward and aft mast (called the mizzen mast) behind the steering rudder and station. [Dutch jol, possibly from Low German jolle.]

amed for his spectacular maritime paintings, Steven Dews is one of the most successful living maritime artists in the world. After graduating art school and returning to his childhood home, he turned to art to express his love for the sea. He studied photographs, reference books, model ships, and architectural drawings while producing hundreds of pencil sketches, becoming a skilled draftsman.

He held his first exhibition in 1976, selling virtually every painting in his entire collection on the first night of this show. Ever since his blockbuster opening, Dews has enjoyed remarkable success and critical acclaim, showing at galleries worldwide and earning numerous prestigious commissions and awards.

Jacob Talamante’s dedication to volunteerism runs deep. Stemming from his passion for helping others, he started Labor Leaders in Port Townsend, mentored several young men, and has supported many companies—including the Wooden Boat Festival during its operation.

Thank you to our volunteer captains for the untold hours, energy, and commitment you bring to the Festival each year, and to our staff for everything including leadership, excellence, resilience, sweat, tears, and good humor.

We wouldn’t have the Festival without the boats and boat owners. Your dedication to your boats is honored here! We appreciate those who spend all summer working on their boats, those who spend all summer playing on their boats, and everyone in between. Because of your love and care of your beautiful vessels, we have something to celebrate—this is your party! Thanks for coming and sharing your passion and joy with us.

Jacob and his wife Shawna are the best kind of volunteers, the first on the job and the last ones to leave. Though they recently moved to New Mexico, Jacob will be flying back for the Festival to manage the setup, tear down, and the Grounds & Recycling Team as he has for many years.
