EDITOR’S NOTE

We begin the issue with On the Road, a photo feature exploring the true meaning of travel through the wonder of the endless skies above. Next is The Roundup, a feature in which we choose a covetable wardrobe piece (this time it’s round shades) and spotlight a few of our favorites. Check out our picks, both new and vintage, on page 24.

Welcome to the Summer 2015 issue of MeetMinnie magazine! We’re so happy you stopped by! Summer is magic. No doubt. It can be both transformative and transportive. In this issue, we explore the beauty of casual, easy summertime through travel photos, DIY projects, style picks and even a favorite recipe.

Finally, we’ve brought back one of our favorites (and yours!): 9 Designs. With projects ranging from jewelry to furniture, and from clothing to home goods, 9 Designs provides ideas to inspire. Perfect for rainy days. (See 9 Designs, pg. 27.) We hope you enjoy the issue!

In other news...we’ve started a blog! We love being able to keep up with our readers between issues. Check out the blog for the latest in MeetMinnie news, shopping picks, inspirations and projects. To read the blog, go to www.meetminnie.com.

On a personal note, I would like to extend my continued thanks to the artists, designers, shops, advertisers, friends and family members who have helped make MeetMinnie magazine a possibility. ON THE

ROAD Travel. It’s the cornerstone of summer. But travel begins the moment we step outside, day after day. Over the past few months, we set ourselves a challenge: to capture the skies through the car window during our everyday travels using only a smartphone. We were amazed at what we saw. The mundane. Transformed.

Not for squares. Apart from the classic wayfarer, round sunglasses are our favorite eyewear shape. Surprisingly versatile, round is never just round. It can be edgy. Bohemian. Throwback. 9 DESIGNS

SIMPLE SUMMER PROJECTS.

MIX & MATCH COLLAR NECKLACES

1. TOOLS & MATERIALS: collar necklace blanks, assorted beads

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Screw off bead end from collar necklace blank. Step 2: Add beads as desired. Step 3: Complete by reattaching bead end. Create different looks simply by switching out the beads. One of our simplest projects, these mix & match collar necklaces are equal parts minimal and bold. And constantly reinventing itself? We’re all for that.

2. TOOLS & MATERIALS: fabric slingback beach chair, black fabric paint, disposable cups or bowls, paintbrushes, water

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: If fabric cover is removable, remove it and place it on protected work surface. Step 2: Add fabric paint to disposable cup. Step 3: Add water to thin paint to desired consistency and mix well. Step 4: Load brush with paint and carefully tap brush so that paint spatters. Repeat until entire piece is covered. Step 5: Let dry according to instructions on fabric paint. Spot clean. We love this paint-spattered beach chair. Fab on the beach (of course), on the porch, by the pool or even in the living room.

INKBLOT BEACH CHAIR

MIXED MEDIA BANGLES

3. TOOLS & MATERIALS: pair of cabinet pulls, rubber pencil grips, air dry clay, clay roller, clay cutter

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Find coordinating cabinet pulls that, when joined, fit your wrist comfortably. Step 2: Join ends of cabinet pulls with pencil grips to form bangle. Check for size and adjust as necessary. We went with a rectangular shape for an edgy twist, but you might find a square to be more wearable. Step 3: On protected work surface, roll out small amount of clay using clay roller. Step 4: When clay is fairly thin, use clay cutter to cut a rectangle large enough to cover pencil grip completely. Step 5: Smooth clay onto pencil grip and let dry according to instructions on clay. Step 6: Repeat on other side. These bangles, with their rectangular shape and clever mix of everyday materials (hello, school supplies!) are unapologetically chic. A must-try.

4. TOOLS & MATERIALS: assorted lamps, lightbulbs

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Collect lamps or lamp bases in different sizes, types and heights. Be mindful of sockets, as they will be visible. We chose dark lamps with black sockets for this reason. Step 2: Find lightbulbs that match acceptable wattage for lamps. Step 3: Screw in lightbulb, plug in and enjoy! Important: Be sure the bulb you choose matches the wattage on the lamp base. Admittedly, there is no real project to this project, but that doesn’t lessen it’s impact. And we love easy, right? Simple lamps make a utilitarian, industrial statement with an assortment of unexpected bare lightbulbs. Why not ditch the shades?

BARE BULB LAMPS

CHOPPING BOARD MIRRORS

5. TOOLS & MATERIALS: assorted wooden chopping boards, mirrors in assorted sizes, polyurethane construction adhesive, caulk gun if necessary for adhesive

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Work in a well-ventilated area. Load caulk gun. Step 2: Decide where to place mirror and mark. Step 3: Apply adhesive according to instructions on adhesive and let dry. Hang from hole on top, or prop along wall or on shelf. These wooden kitchenware mirrors are screaming to be clustered on a wall. All the art you’ll need.

6. TOOLS & MATERIALS: sweatshirts, white fabric paint, paintbrushes, disposable cups, cardboard, water, fabric scissors

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Wash sweatshirt according to instructions on fabric paint. Step 2: Cut off ribbed collar, hem and sleeves from sweatshirt. Step 3: Figure out where to crop sweatshirt and cut a straight line across. Step 4: Place piece of cardboard inside shirt to prevent paint bleeding onto other side. Step 5: Add fabric paint to disposable cup and add water to thin paint to desired consistency. Mix well. Step 6: Load brush with paint and carefully tap brush so that paint spatters all over sweatshirt. Repeat until entire shirt is covered. Step 7: Let dry according to instructions on fabric paint. For best results, hand wash. We love the easygoing style of this boxy crop top. Similar to the quilted crop top we featured in our Winter 2014 issue, these painted sweatshirt tops make the perfect beach coverup or casual weekend layering piece. Thus proving crop tops are a year-round necessity. Yes, really.

PAINTED CROP TOPS

PAINT DRIP CATCHALL BOWLS

7. TOOLS & MATERIALS: terra-cotta plant saucers in assorted sizes, acrylic paint in white and other desired colors, disposable cups or bowls, paintbrushes in assorted sizes, water

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Add white acrylic paint to disposable cup and add water to thin paint to desired consistency. Mix well. Step 2: Brush watered-down paint all over saucers. Let dry. Step 3: Add brushstrokes or paint spatters in desired colors. For best results, water down paint and let it drip and dry where it may. Step 4: Add layers of paint until desired look is achieved, allowing sufficient dry time between coats. We’ve dotted these catchall bowls around the entire house. Perfect for holding jewelry, keys, office supplies or bath soaps, these decorative dishes add warmth, color, texture and high style to even the smallest spaces. Not for use with food.

8. TOOLS & MATERIALS: small ceramic or marble backsplash tiles (lightweight enough to feel comfortable when worn), flat back earring posts and earring backs, jewelry adhesive

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Remove tiles from mesh backing. Step 2: Mark backs of tiles where you’d like to place earring post. Step 3: Dot glue on spot and attach earring post firmly. Step 4: Clean off any excess glue and let dry according to instructions on adhesive. Talk about statements. These marble tile earrings are simultaneously bold and classic. Wear with your favorite monochrome black or white outfit and prepare to stand out.

MARBLE TILE EARRINGS

TEXTURED PLANT POTS

9. TOOLS & MATERIALS: unglazed or terra-cotta plant pots, craft sticks, rubber gloves, spackle, assorted tools for decorating (we used modeling clay tools)

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Work in a well-ventilated area and wear rubber gloves. Step 2: Following instructions on spackle, use craft stick to apply spackle to pot like frosting to a cake. Before spackle dries, create texture with modeling clay tools or other household objects. Step 3: Let dry according to instructions on spackle. Homes just aren’t complete without plants, and we love the idea of creating a personal collection of plant pots to show off your green thumb. For indoor use only. See pg. 49 for product directory.

SUMMER

PUNCH

INGREDIENTS: prepared lemonade, limeade or berry lemonade; ginger ale; fresh fruit for garnish (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Add one part lemonade or limeade and two parts ginger ale to a glass. Step 2: Garnish with fresh fruit and serve cold. For this recipe, we used raspberry lemonade with a blackberry garnish. This simple drink is our favorite summertime treat, especially when served in quilted glass jars. Perfect for outdoor picnics, clambakes, fish frys or barbecues, and all of the times in between. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS.

What is MeetMinnie? Launched in December 2012, MeetMinnie is an online style magazine.

Who is Minnie? Minnie is our muse, a character we created for the magazine. In our minds, Minnie is that girl, the one who makes a $5 tshirt look couture. The one who rocks a choppy pixie cut with ease. Leather shorts? No problem. Mixing prints? In her sleep. She’s the one who takes chances. The one who pulls it all off with attitude alone. But why does she get to have all the fun? We’re all a bit Minnie. And there the concept for MeetMinnie was born.

Can I buy MeetMinnie magazine in print? Not at this time. MeetMinnie is exclusively an online publication, available at www.meetminnie.com.

How can I get my shop or brand featured in MeetMinnie magazine? We are always on the lookout for new shops, products and brands to feature in the pages of MeetMinnie. If you think your

shop or brand fits our aesthetic, email us at submissions@meetminnie.com. Be sure to include a link to your site or lookbook.

How do I advertise my shop, website, blog, etc. in MeetMinnie magazine? Thank you for your interest in advertising in MeetMinnie magazine. For complete ad info, including rates, artwork guidelines and deadlines, please visit our Advertising page at www.meetminnie.com/advertise.

How often is MeetMinnie published? When will the next issue be online? MeetMinnie magazine is published semiannually. The next issue will be online in December 2015.

How do I keep up with the latest news at MeetMinnie magazine? It’s easy! For the latest news and information about MeetMinnie, take a minute to sign up for our mailing list or check out our blog.
