COVER STORY DALE FARM INVESTS IN ITS FIRST RENAULT TRUCKS

COMMENT After overcoming the various challenges of 2023, what can the industry look forward to in 2024? As we went to press, it appeared that the return of a power sharing Executive at Stormont was most certainly on the cards, and not before time, so let’s hope an agreement is reached. Meantime, the race towards zero emissions and electrification in the transport industry continued apace in 2023, and no doubt it will gain further momentum in the year ahead. Indeed, as we report in this issue, demand for renewable gas in transport from Ireland’s road freight sector is continuing to show strong growth – in October, for the tenth month running, demand for this low carbon alternative to diesel saw another significant year-on-year increase, up 32% on the same month last year. And we hear from Logistics UK’s Nichola Mallon who, in her regular column, looks forward to Northern Ireland’s 2050 net zero emission deadline. As it draws closer, she reports on how businesses are facing the challenge of maximising operational efficiencies while moving towards decarbonisation. We also hear from a number of leading truck manufacturers on how they are moving in the right direction. The New Generation DAF XB series had its world premiere at the Solutrans exhibition in; full in the spotlight was the12-tonne XB Electric – Europe’s first 12-tonne electric city distribution truck. Our ‘Net Zero’ section is also packed with more stories on electrification. IVECO, meanwhile, has unveiled its new Way Range which sees the introduction of new advanced features, greater comfort, and a powerful yet efficient new xCursor 13 engine, while MAN Truck & Bus has received the “Truck Innovation Award 2024” from the International Truck of the Year jury for its research and development projects in the field of autonomous driving. Changing gear, as 2024 begins, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland will focus on the safe loading and unloading of vehicles in the haulage and logistics sector as part of its recently launched ‘Drive Danger Out’ workplace transport safety campaign. The focused inspections will continue until March 2024. Special features in this edition include a look at what’s new in the truck tyre market, together with the latest developments in the materials handling sector, and we turn the spotlight on SFG Forwarding as it continues to grow and expand its business. Well, that’s it for now. We hope you all had a peaceful time over the festive break and we look forward to your continued support in the New Year ahead – and don’t forget, you can keep up to date with all the industry news 24/7 by logging on to our website at www.exportandfreight.com.

Transport and Logistics Industry Celebrates Quarter Century of Transaid International development organisation Transaid celebrated its 25th anniversary recently in London with its largest ever showcase, attended by more than 170 industry supporters, partners and development organisations. Transaid’s Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, addressed assembled guests, thanking them for their interest, enthusiasm, and commitment to Transaid’s life-saving work. The event, held at the London Transport Museum, demonstrated the wealth of support for Transaid’s many projects, which have benefitted people in more than 20 countries across predominantly sub-Saharan Africa. Caroline Barber, CEO of Transaid, said: “I am immensely proud of all that Transaid, and our partners, have delivered over 25 years. We have grown the scale and impact of our work, improving access to healthcare services for communities in Africa, delivering pioneering road safety initiatives and working tirelessly to reduce death and injury on the roads.” Highlighting the benefits of supporting

Transaid as a corporate partner, Andrew Malcolm, Chief Executive of the Malcolm Group, and a gold sponsor of the event, said: “In 2014, we pledged to utilise our expertise, resources, and global reach to support Transaid’s mission to transform communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Our partnership with Transaid is a very special one and continues to be a source of great pride to me.”

driver training projects in Ghana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Transaid recently extended its motorcycle safety work with the FIA Foundation in Kenya, plus is working in South Africa and the UK to better understand the strategies young men implement to keep themselves safe while walking to public transport in low-income areas.

Transaid was founded 25 years ago by Save the Children, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) and The Princess Royal. Its aim has always been to support people to build the skills they need to transform their lives – with a focus on improving road safety and increasing access to healthcare for rural communities.

Transaid is also seeking the next phase of donor funding for its bicycle ambulance project in Zambia, which has been proven to dramatically reduce severe malaria mortality in children under six and described by the World Health Organisation as being “feasible, safe and effective in hard-to-reach communities”.

The entire Transaid team was in London to promote the organisation’s work, which currently spans nine countries, including professional

Expanding transporter returns to Krone as demand stays strong Noone Transport, Co. Meath, is undergoing a period of significant investment as it opens up new routes throughout Ireland, the UK and continental Europe. Established in 1986 and now one of Ireland’s leading transport and logistics operators, Noone Transport provides an extensive range of transport and warehousing services to numerous industry sectors, including food, retail, autoparts and pharmaceutical. A mixture of 50 Krone curtainsiders and temperature-controlled trailers will enter Noone‘s vehicle fleet over the coming months, most of which will operate from the company’s newly-built warehouse and distribution facility, 20 minutes from Dublin port. “As a leading warehousing and logistics provider, we have expanded our capabilities with our newly constructed warehouse,” says director, Daniel Noone. “With 80,000 sq ft and 24,000 pallet capacity, we can efficiently handle distribution, order fulfilment, cross-docking and stock management for part and full loads. Plus, our prime location just off the M2 puts us in close proximity to ports and airports.” The new trailer equipment

Manufactured by Krone in Germany the Cool Liners’ body strength lies mainly in the Duoplex Steel outer skins and heavy-duty aluminium floor. Plus, for extra rigidity, the chassis is constructed using double -T, longitudinal beams and a Z-profile rear traverse section with diagonal reinforcements. The rear doors are of high-security ‘container-type’ design, while the loading security certificate complies with European standard, EN 12642 Code XL. The curtainsiders come with Krone’s award-winning Multi Lock loading system, which features strapping points every 10 cms along each side rave, for multiple strapping options and secure loading. The high-impact phenolic floor, allows for fork loading up to 7 tonnes and for fast top-loading, each is fitted with an Edscha sliding roof. The Cool Liners are a mixture of Duplex steel, single and double deckers, some with multitemperature control. While in transit, each load benefits from KSC ProPlus Cool – the latest telematics system from Krone,

which automatically monitors inside temperatures, coupling status, brake condition, door openings, fuel level, trailer location and tyre pressures. “With the new tyre monitoring regulations coming into force in July 2024,” says Daniel, “whereby all new trailers must be fitted with a TPMS, the Krone system will prove vital. Aside from the regulations, it’s a good additional safety measure and will undoubtedly help to avoid excessive wear and potential tyre failure – both of which ad up to downtime and additional cost.” In addition, ProPlus Cool handles complete document management via WLAN, which enables the traffic

“We are delighted to once again be returning to Krone during this new growth phase,“ says Daniel. “Krone knows the product inside out and match the trailer specifications to our operational needs. Their efficient service and dependable parts supply enable us to provide an exceptionally reliable service for our customers. We bought our first Krone in 2008, and the build quality continues to be of the highest standard.” Noone Transport operates a fleet of 50 Mercedes Actros 18/45 tractor units along with a 100-strong trailer fleet including fridges, box vans and curtainsiders, with options to multiple destinations including the UK, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

Demand for gas in transport from Ireland’s road freight sector showing strong growth

Gas Networks Ireland and Virginia International Logistics have taken another step forward in reducing emissions from Ireland’s transport industry - one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise – with the opening of Ireland’s eighth Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling station. CNG is natural gas that has been compressed to fit into a vehicle’s tank and is available for heavy goods and commercial vehicles, while BioCNG is its certified renewable gas equivalent.

the first step towards net-zero commercial transport in Ireland.”

Fuelling with CNG can reduce a heavy good vehicle’s (HGV) emissions by up to 22%, while BioCNG, which qualifies as a renewable fuel under the Irish Biofuel Obligation Scheme, can turn an HGV into a carbon neutral vehicle. Demand for renewable gas in transport from Ireland’s road freight sector is continuing to show strong growth – in October, for the tenth month running, demand for this low carbon alternative to diesel saw another significant year-on-year increase, up 32% on the same month last year. Headquartered in Co. Cavan, Virginia International Logistics (VIL) first introduced BioCNG compatible vehicles to its fleet in 2018, which they have continued to expand and now makes up almost a fifth of the company’s vehicles. Working with Gas Networks Ireland, who installed and is operating the CNG equipment, the new station is located at VIL’s premises in Maghera, just outside Virginia. Speaking as she officially opened

the new CNG refuelling station in Virginia, Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD said: “Ireland faces a significant challenge to meet its emission reduction targets, particularly in the transport sector, as it currently accounts for 42% of Ireland’s energy use, making it the country’s largest source of energy demand. “This new CNG refuelling station allows hauliers and fleet operators in Cavan and the North-East region to begin the journey to sustainable transport and supply chains by switching their fuel from diesel.

“I am especially excited that a Cavan grown, and now international transport business, employing more than 400 staff with over 130 trucks on the road, is to the fore in helping Ireland transition to a cleaner energy future by providing a low carbon fuel alternative to diesel.” Gas Networks Ireland’s Head of Business Development, Karen Doyle said: “Ireland’s commercial transport fleet makes up just 3% of vehicles on the road nationwide yet is responsible for approximately 20% of transport’s carbon emissions. BioCNG is key to driving sustainable supply chains and is

James Cole, responsible for BioCNG at Virginia International Logistics, said: “This is the latest low carbon milestone for us.  Transport is changing and we are proud to be leading the way in moving Ireland to a cleaner energy future, particularly as we see increasing demand from customers for more decarbonised supply chain solutions. Being able to offer a lower-carbon transport solution is a strong differentiator for any business and it demonstrates a focus on sustainability when tendering for new business. “Thanks to having BioCNG compatible vehicles in our fleet, we are in a position where we can provide customers with route assessments and advise on the optimal route for emissions savings per pallet of goods moved or kilometre travelled.” In 2019, VIL became the first haulier in Ireland to complete a zero-carbon HGV delivery to Europe, when they brought a consignment of beef from Cavan to Caen in Northern France. The expansion of VIL’s BioCNG compatible fleet and the installation of the refuelling technology is supported by Gas Networks Ireland.

Michelin Calls for Bigger Sustainability Focus

Members of the Michelin Fleet Panel have called for the industry to accelerate progress towards more sustainable tyres and improve support for fleet managers transitioning to electric vehicles. The panel, comprising representatives from some of the UK’s biggest leasing, fleet management and rental companies, as well as several major end-user fleets, addressed a series of industry challenges at a recent meeting.

“It’s vitally important we better educate fleet managers and customers about how to avoid unnecessary raw material wastage, specifically that it is safe to use tyres down to the 1.6mm legal tread depth limit.”

Chairing the meeting, Martin Thompson, Michelin’s Brand Manager UK & Ireland, briefed the panel on the manufacturer’s target of using 100 per cent sustainable materials in its tyres by 2050, and 40 per cent by 2030, and urged the industry to make quicker progress in reducing the environmental impacts of tyres.

Some panel members called for the industry to put a greater focus on analysing tyre wear on EVs, saying the current lack of data was making it difficult to make informed buying decisions.

He also reinforced the importance of extracting the full performance out of every tyre, saying:

Lorna McAtear, Head of Fleet at National Grid, said the industry needed to tackle some myths around EVs. “There are some misconceptions that all tyres wear out quicker on EVs. The industry needs to deliver clearer

messaging to ensure people have the best performing and safest tyres on their EVs, and that they don’t cost more than tyres for internal combustion-engined vehicles.” The Michelin Fleet Panel has been meeting for more than 20 years; membership is voluntary and participants are not required to be Michelin customers.

Health and Safety Executive to step up inspection in haulage and logistics sector

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland will focus on the safe loading and unloading of vehicles in the haulage and logistics sector as part of its recently launched ‘Drive Danger Out’ workplace transport safety campaign. The focused inspections are now underway and will continue until March 2024. HSENI Principal Inspector (Transport Team), Kellie McNamara said: “Loading and unloading of vehicles can be a particularly hazardous activity regardless of the size of the business. We see incidents involving people falling from height including from flatbed trailers, being struck by a vehicle, or moving equipment, and from being struck by falling objects.

“While the management of loading and unloading forms part of our regular inspections, over the next few months we will be placing a particular emphasis on this area of work in a positive move to reduce the number of people killed and injured in the sector.” Businesses are being asked to ensure there is always adequate provision to allow for safe loading and unloading especially in relation to uneven loads which can result in a vehicle or trailer becoming unstable. Ms. McNamara added: “Companies must have clear signage and instructions for logistics and transport driver arriving at their site. In addition, drivers should always be provided with a safe place to wait which is located away from moving vehicles and

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 requires all loading and unloading activities to be risk assessed and performed by trained staff who are aware of the risks involved. Drivers should also be aware of the risk of the load, or part of the load, moving when the vehicle is in transit.

• Is work at height avoided when performing sheeting or the strapping of loads (including flatbed lorries)? If that is not possible what controls are in place in terms of fall prevention? During inspections, should significant risks be identified, Inspectors may take enforcement action to achieve compliance with health and safety legislation to ensure that the risks are adequately managed and reduced as far as is reasonably practicable. centre,” says Coolsaet. “Providing our apprentices with the right guidance and equipment to help take their careers forward is hugely important. We hope these men and women will form the backbone of our dealer network teams for years to come. Making this investment in their learning now, will only benefit our business in the future.”

Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland has officially opened its new Apprentice Training Centre. The manufacturer is investing more than £300,000 in the facility, located within Remit Training’s Automotive Academy, in Derby.

Currently Volvo Trucks has more than 300 apprentices, including 20 women, taking part in its three-year apprenticeship scheme. The Level 3 Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) apprenticeship, supported by partner Remit Training, involves a mix of academic learning and on-the-job training.

The move underlines Volvo Trucks’ commitment to its apprenticeship programme and the importance it places on providing its next generation of HGV technicians with rewarding career opportunities. Karen Bailey, Head of Competence Development at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “I’m proud to say we have always recognised the value that apprenticeships can bring to our business and the wider industry. “The shortage of skilled technicians across the sector in recent years has been widely reported and is something we are doing our best to address. The Apprentice Training Centre is a phenomenal resource to have and we’re confident it will help to attract even more talent into our network, whilst also being a great introduction to the wealth of career opportunities

DALE FARM INVESTS IN ITS FIRST RENAULT TRUCKS

COVER STORY

Dale Farm, Northern Ireland’s leading dairy company, owned by a cooperative of 1,300 dairy farmers, recently invested in its first two Renault trucks from Diamond Trucks who picked up no less than three awards at the Renault Trucks UK Dealer network Conference 2023, including Renault Trucks ‘Dealer of the Year.’ The two Renault T480 6x2 midlift tractor units, being used to collect milk from local farms across Northern Ireland, have already made an impressive impact on both the company and its drivers. Dale Farm, of course, is synonymous with dairy in Northern Ireland, with a rich heritage of family farming that has spanned

generations; the company operates a 100 plus mixed fleet of trucks from 15 tonnes upwards, as well as a considerable number of cars and vans. Dale Farm’s Fleet Transport Manager Adrian Currie says the investment in the two Renault T 480’s came about after a phone call from Diamond Trucks’ sales executive Mathew Keys who, he says, demonstrated an excellent knowledge not only of the Renault brand but also a good understanding of the Dale Farm operation and its specific needs.

“When it comes to adding new trucks to our fleet our number one priority is reliability, followed by fuel economy and service from the dealer and when we took that initial phone call to the next step to see what was on offer from Diamond Trucks we quickly discovered all three of our needs could be met by the Renault brand,” says Adrian. “While it is still early days, we are more than

happy with our investment.” Adds Adrian: “We operate 365 days a year on milk collections, so service and reliability are paramount to Dale Farm. We cannot afford any downtime. Our trucks cover about 100,000 kms a year, which may not be big mileage, but they do have a lot of hardships to contend with; they operate in challenging conditions on narrow, rural roads and country lanes. Some of our trucks would rarely see a motorway, so they need to be fit for purpose in every way.

“Making collections on busy farms and in restricted yards means our drivers need to have good all round visibility from the cab, as well as having a truck that is easily manoeuvrable,

and the Renault T480s, with their triaxle 27,000 litre capacity Crossland tankers, haven’t disappointed. They have already made a favourable impression on our drivers; they like

how well the trucks are spec’d, how well they perform and how well they are presented.” Powered by a 13 litre engine, the Renault 480s were supplied with extra specification that included an upgraded Optidriver gearbox, heavy rear drive axles at 65 tonne, rear dust covers, aluminium fuel and air tanks and steel bumper corners with headlight protection to cope with their arduous working conditions. They also feature an air suspension cab, leather seat trim, plenty of storage space for the drivers paperwork and personal bits and pieces, a high quality infotainment system, and even a fridge. The trucks have been supplied with a five year Start & Drive contract covering repairs and maintenance. “This is very important to us,” says Adrian. “We don’t have our own workshops, so such a contract gives us peace of mind that our trucks will not be off the road unnecessarily. We have them on an eight week inspection programme, so anything that’s needed will be catered for, and so far we are very happy with the support we are getting from Diamond Trucks.” Comments Diamond Trucks’ Matthew Keys: “We are delighted that we have been able to meet the needs of Dale Farm with these two new Renault T 480s and have every confidence they will serve the company well in the years ahead.”

Johnsons Hotel Linen introduces 52 rigids and 3 double decks from Tiger Trailers Johnsons Hotel Linen, one of the UK’s largest hotel laundry hire and service providers, has begun introducing to its fleet fifty-two rigids and three fixed double decks manufactured by Tiger Trailers, with an emphasis on durability to meet its demanding operations. Following a visit to Cheshire-based Tiger Trailers’ purpose-built facility in 2022 by Leigh Anscombe, Johnsons’ National Transport Manager, the order for the trailers was placed initially, with the first delivered in October 2023, during which time the first twenty 18-tonne rigids were also manufactured. Anscombe comments: “From our first introduction to Ignacio and Tiger Trailers we were impressed with the setup of the business and the attention we received as a potential customer. This has continued since placing numerous large orders through Tiger Trailers, with communication from Ignacio being fantastic and constantly keeping us aware of the situation and any changes. Issues that were encountered along the way and could have potentially arisen were communicated, headed off and dealt with before becoming a problem because of this. “The first batch of vehicles have been on our fleet for close to six months now

during our busiest period and show no signs of wear and tear. This is what we would expect from a company such as

Tiger and feel it is reflected in the overall finish and build quality of the product and service we have received”, he adds.

DAF XF 450 wins ‘European Transport Award for Sustainability’ DAF Trucks has received the important ‘European Transport Award for Sustainability’ (ETPN) for its New Generation DAF XF long-haul series. The recognition adds to the impressive list of prestigious titles the XF series has collected, including the ‘International Truck of the Year’, ‘Green Truck’ and ‘European Truck Challenge’ awards. The ETPN, presented by the German newspaper Transport, is another confirmation of the outstanding qualities of the XF series. The purpose of the European Transport Prize for Sustainability is to acknowledge companies in the commercial vehicle sector that display and support commitment to sustainable practices. The newspaper Transport aims to demonstrate that responsible and sustainable initiatives can go very well together with efficiency and the competitiveness of a vehicle. With its elongated and highly aerodynamic cab, the New Generation DAF trucks have set new industry standards in the areas of efficiency and sustainability,

resulting in class-leading low fuel and AdBlue consumption. Adding to the efficiency, are also long service intervals of up to 200.000 kilometres, the ultralow oil levels in the axle bodies for minimum internal friction loses, the low vehicle weights

and the intelligent Advanced Driver Assistant Systems like Predictive Cruise Control. Furthermore, the New Generation DAF truck series offers unrivalled direct and indirect view in their segments, guaranteeing the highest

safety for driver and other road users. The driver comfort of the vehicles also sets new standards with the most spacious and luxurious cabs in the industry.

‘Most convincing candidate’ Christine Harttmann, Editor-in-Chief of Transport and a member of the jury, highlighted the significance of DAF’s efficiency achievements, stating: “Diesel trucks remain at the forefront in purchasing decisions. Therefore, it is important and right that manufacturers continue to enhance the efficiency of internal combustion engines. The numerous strong entries in the ‘Conventional Drive Trucks’ category demonstrated the commitment of all manufacturers in this respect. In the end, however, DAF’s New Generation truck design concept, embodied by the DAF XF 450, was clearly the most convincing candidate for winning the award.” Bart Bosmans, Director Marketing & Sales and member of the DAF Board of Management: “We are delighted with this important recognition. DAF’s New Generation truck series is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. The XF 450 illustrates the great effort we have put in developing the most fuel efficient trucks in the industry.”

DRIVE FOR WORKPLACE TRANSPORT SAFETY MUST BE MAINTAINED In September 2023, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) launched ‘Drive Danger Out’ campaign, to promote awareness of the risks of workplace transport and provide industry with the means to manage these risks. In the 10 years to 2022, incidents involving workplace vehicles across almost all work settings claimed the lives of 34 workers and left 162 others with serious injuries. It was against this stark backdrop that HSENI developed the campaign with a call to action for all workplaces in NI. HSENI Deputy Executive, Louis Burns, said: “The campaign launch was very successful. It was supported by various industry bodies and companies. Our mobile billboard travelled around all local authorities and the press coverage achieved a reach of around 940,000 readers. “Since the launch, our inspectors have been busy on the ground checking for compliance. I am heartened by the way many companies and sections of industry have listened to our call to action, got their houses in order and put real effort into managing

workplace transport. Nonetheless there are some old issues we are seeing across different sectors. “These include poor pedestrian / vehicle segregation; no speed restrictions; blind corners; random parking in walkways; missing mirrors; mirrors dirty and not adjusted correctly; poor all round visibility; broken seatbelts or

seatbelts not being worn; training; and helmets not worn on ATVs. “All these issues have the potential to cause a fatality or serious injury. All these issues are easily solved. “In most sectors we publicised what we would be looking for, we provided the sectors with proforma inspection templates, and our inspectors have been out in the field

promoting and checking compliance with good practice in workplace transport safety. We want duty holders to imbed good workplace transport safety into their businesses to give this campaign longevity.” Looking forward to the next stage of the campaign HSENI recognises the need to reach out to a younger demographic. In the new year it will launch a series of short videos which will use a local comedian. This will strike a chord with everyone but will have a particular reach with the 18- to 35-year-olds. “While the videos use comedy, they will have a serious message and will direct the viewer to our Drive Danger Out call to action. Please look out for these and promote them in your businesses and industry sectors.” To support employers, advice and guidance along with inspection proformas detailing key aspects of workplace transport safety for each industry are available at: www.hseni. gov.uk/workplacetransport

ZERO EMISSION

FACING THE CHALLENGES OF ZERO EMISSION Along with the day-to-day challenges facing the transport sector, the looming uncertainty of 2035’s introduction of zero emission levels for rigid trucks up to 26t is perhaps the most challenging. Export & Freight has talked to James Hunter, Head of Sales at Dawsongroup, a leading UK asset rental, leasing and contract hire operation. James hails originally from South Africa, where for many years he was a successful transport operator, so he has a lot of practical handson experience. Now, alongside managing the sales operation for the Dawsongroup core fleet, approaching some 13,000 trucks and trailers, he also has responsibility for the sale of around 2,500 used vehicles every year, through the company’s Dawsondirect operation. It’s a position that gives him a unique insight into the move to ‘no-emission’ vehicles. He told us, “There are a number of factors at play as we move toward 2035: acquisition costs for trucks are currently around treble for electric vehicles, with the added current burden of poorly compensated weight restrictions, similar R&M charges and, thanks to the structure of the electricity market, fuel costs; the need for a workable infrastructure; and the pressure from Government on both the operating industry to meet the targets –and manufacturers to reduce production of ICE vehicles for the UK market in advance of the introduction. It’s a volatile mix and any one of these could bring major problems for Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. “There’s not much anyone can do about manufacturing or running costs. Truck makers are only just recovering from the Covid

18

EXPORT&FREIGHT

impacts on sales and staff shortages, as well as the global shortage of semi-conductors. And if the Government says, ‘Slow down’ ICE production before the 2035 deadline, they will have little option but to comply.”

closer look at quality used vehicles across the board: even among ‘blue chip’ operators.”

James is of the opinion that, coupled with the infrastructure shortages, all this creates what he describes as ‘the perfect storm’. He thinks however that there might be changes from the Government side over the deadline – or at least the strictness with which it is applied.

“My guess,” he says, “is we must echo the car/van profile and ease our way toward zero emissions with hybrid vehicles. Protect the environment with battery power first, but don’t damage supply chains by not having ICE back-up once that runs out on trips. I don’t know, but that would make sense to me, especially for HGVs on long-haul work.

“Ever since the move was announced I felt the deadline was unworkable for an industry as complex and central to the overall economy of UK plc. Now, on the car and van side of life we see a probable easing of deadlines to comply. Is that a good sign for the transport sector? To be honest, I would be very wary of making or, worse, acting on any such assumptions. The fact of the matter is that government is likely to view the medium and heavy transport sector as a different case, having fewer vehicles to manage through the changes.”

LOOKING FORWARD Clearly there will be impacts on vehicle acquisition as the deadlines draw closer. While some might say, ‘well it’s not until 2035’, for many operators that’s just three fleet refreshes away –the third of which will see them into the zero emissions era. “That opens the possibility,” suggests James, “for a

So, James Hunter believes there are two possible outcomes, assuming Government sticks to its course.

“Or, assuming no change in Government demands, the haulage sector, in huge numbers, might choose to buy more and more diesel trucks as the deadline approaches. Within the bounds of legislation, this could see operators run them for a far longer term than usual, say eight to ten years. Combine that with probable restrictions on manufacturers delivering diesel trucks into the UK, pre-2035 and beyond, and you can expect significantly heightened demand for used diesel trucks, with an emphasis on low mileage and later registration models. Our ‘Smarter Asset Strategy’ approach will help operators meet the challenge.” While Government vacillates wildly over solutions, it’s good to see at least one business planning to help operators through the challenging times ahead.

CLEANING EQUIPMENT

K.E.W. CLEANING EQUIPMENT: HELPING OPERATORS TO PROJECT THE RIGHT IMAGE ON THE ROAD In the transport industry, image is everything, so it is essential to keep trucks and trailers looking their best on the road, which is why many fleet operators look to K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment N.I, a company that has been at the forefront of the cleaning industry for almost five decades since it was first established by Robert Ingram when pressure washers were just beginning to be introduced to Northern Ireland. This family run company has come a long way since 1977 and has built up a wealth of experience in providing transport operators and a diverse range of other customers and sectors with premier brand equipment and an unrivalled aftersales support. While Robert has taken a step back, the company remains in good hands with son Matthew at the helm and it continues to grow what is a well established and loyal customer base, which includes many of Northern Ireland’s leading haulage operators. K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment’s purpose built premises near Banbridge in County Down stocks a large range of power washers - from domestic and commercial machines right up to cleaning solutions for food production plants. The company’s success down through the years can be attributed not only to its extensive and innovative product range, but equally as important, to its customer service. Comments Matthew: “We pride ourselves in the level of support we offer to our customers; we sell a lot of high quality products, which we install and set up on site, if required. We also train the customer on how to use the equipment so as they get the best possible use from it. We believe, however, that aftersales support is paramount to our success. “Transport companies especially appreciate good back-up. Come the end of the week when trucks arrive back in the yard for cleaning, they don’t want to have any equipment issues that will set them back, so we provide on-site repairs and service. The customer doesn’t have to come to us, we go to the customer when and where we are needed.”

ON-SITE SERVICE VANS To that end, K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment’s stores department stocks a wide variety of spares and replacement accessories for all brands of pressure washers and other equipment, supported by factory trained stores and service personnel. “We also have an eight-strong fleet of fully equipped onsite service vehicles manned by trained engineers to offer rapid response for onsite services and breakdown covering all of Northern Ireland and farther afield,” says Matthew. “We serve different areas for different brands and in some cases we would have customers as far down south as Dublin.” As we mentioned, K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment’s product portfolio is extensive. It includes hot and cold water static and mobile pressure

EXPORT&FREIGHT

washers, in addition to floor cleaning machines such as scrubber dryers and industrial vacuums, which are ideal for garages, workshop, and car showrooms and sweepers that can be used for tidying up warehouse floors, yards, forecourts and parking spaces. Leading brands include Denmark based Nilfisk, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of professional cleaning equipment, offering an extensive range of premium products, and German based EHRL, another one of the world‘s leading providers of innovative solutions in cleaning technology and vehicle washing. K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment is also the sole distributor in Northern Ireland for Egholm outdoor utility vehicles. These machines are ideal for keeping roads, parks and outdoor areas clean and inviting all year round. Special attachments have been developed for the machines which can be changed according to the season or task to be carried out. There are several different models, one of which has around 17 attachments, making it truly versatile for tasks such as road sweeping, gritting, snow clearance and even grass cutting. One of the latest additions is Dirt Driver which is a trailer mounted, diesel powered hot washer with 600L capacity water tanks, so it is ideal for mobile use in the likes of transport yards where there might be no available water or power source.

FIT FOR PURPOSE PRODUCTS “Because we are an independent company and a well established one, we are in a good position where we can choose which brands and products we want to promote – and that helps us to ensure we have the right equipment that will meet our customers’ exact requirements,” adds Matthew, whose company, incidentally, won a Nilfisk Dealer Excellence Award for the largest dealer in Northern Ireland and one of the Top 3 in the UK. “While our variety and quality of brands can be viewed in our showroom or on our website, the best way to evaluate the performance of our equipment is to book a demonstration which can be organised on our premises or the customer’s own premises. We are constantly looking to add new and innovative products so that our customers have a variety of options to choose,” says Matthew, who adds: “We can also supply a wide range of detergents and other cleaning accessories, so customers don’t have to go anywhere else to source them.” In addition, K.E.W. Cleaning Equipment offers different service contracts adapted to each customer’s specific needs. Some contract options include travel, labour and even parts to enable you to budget accurately for your equipment costs.

SAFE Status Labcraft lamp ticks the safety box for lifting deck trailers Labcraft, designers and manufacturers of LED lighting for commercial vehicles, has responded to calls from transport operators to produce a safety light which guards against potential incidents during the use of lifting decks in trailers. Mounted at the trailer rear on the inside wall, the new SAFE Status dual colour safety lamp displays a red warning light when the trailer deck is moving. Only when the lifting deck is locked into place and the trailer is safe to enter, will the light turn green. The slimline SAFE Status lamp is easily surface mounted inside the trailer frame and connects to the existing circuitry for the lifting

deck controls. It is constructed from solid aluminium with a tough polycarbonate lens protecting the high efficacy green and red LEDs. Waterproof to IP67 and ECER10 approved, the new lamp produces a strong and intense light. The LEDs, as with all Labcraft lights, run at a low temperature to maximise product life. “We are continually monitoring where new vehicle lighting

requirements are needed across multiple transport sectors,” says Labcraft’s sales manager Matt Stubbs, “and as such, we work closely with vehicle manufacturers and operators to innovate for improved safety and economic use.” The SAFE status trailer deck lamp is no exception, says Labcraft, and is very likely to be seen by operators as an essential component

- especially in busy loading environments and docking bays, where the available light is poor. “The handy new lamp is lightweight, unobtrusive and easy to retrofit or attach during trailer manufacture,” adds Matt, but most of all, it’s a big tick in the safety box for anyone using lifting decks. Not only that, but the new SAFE Status lamp is also available in both 12V and 24V, making it suitable for a broader range of vehicles and applications.” All Labcraft lights, including the new SAFE status lamp, are made at the company’s ISO9001/14001 facility in Saffron Walden, Essex, where they follow an environmentally conscious, ecological, and responsible manufacturing process.

“The Good Move”, a journey right to the heart of Renault Trucks’ ecological transition How can a key player in road freight transport a sector responsible for 7% of CO2 emissions in Europe - contribute to limiting global warming? Bruno Blin, President of Renault Trucks, gives us a first insight and explains how his company is getting organised and making significant changes to rapidly and drastically reduce its carbon footprint in “The Good Move, committed to decarbonisation”, a seven-part web series.

“Global warming is a reality and we are all individually responsible for our decisions and actions. What does this mean for me, President of Renault Trucks, a company that manufactures trucks found on roads worldwide? These are Bruno Blin’s opening words to the web series “The Good Move, committed to decarbonisation”. Road freight transport does indeed account for 7% of total CO2 emissions in Europe, making it a key sector in the fight against climate change. “We are part of the problem, which means that we have a fundamental role to play in solving it,” says Bruno Blin. “Because we can no longer be satisfied with baby steps, at Renault Trucks we have made commitments to decarbonise our industry and conserve resources, with many concrete actions already in place. Of course, a lot still remains to be done. This is what I wanted to share and document in this series.” In “The Good Move, committed to decarbonisation”, a seven-part web series in a documentary-style format, Bruno Blin, accompanied by a company employee, meets the experts: a battery recycling professional, a plant director, an urban logistics specialist, as well as a glaciologist and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They all share the same desire to collectively embrace change - in practices, models, and above all, mindset. Because the answer to the climate challenge lies in collaboration and innovation. Each of the seven episodes in the series explores a specific aspect of the transition process and highlights Renault Trucks’ commitment to driving the move to sustainable transport. The first episode of this weekly series is now available online, at www.renault-trucks.com “The Good Move, committed to decarbonisation” was produced by Régis Granet, with the French agency Alunites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK1fONZL6oA

Head of Trade and Devolved Policy, Logistics UK

2023: A YEAR IN REVIEW The Windsor Framework, a new Border Target Operating Model, decarbonisation, workforce and skill shortages: the NI logistics industry is going through a period of significant change. In this article I will explore some of the key challenges faced, and progress made, over the past 12 months and look ahead to what lies in store in 2024. At the end of February, the EU and UK announced the Windsor Framework –the agreement between the UK government and EU to ensure NI has full access to both UK and EU markets – to replace the NI Protocol.

GB from the Republic of Ireland and other countries inside the EU post-Brexit. This means thatfrom31 January 2024 some goods will face full customs controls when moved directly from Irish ports to Great Britain.

Ensuring the new agreement is implemented in a sensible, pragmatic and streamlined way that works for our members was a priority for Logistics UK in 2023 and remains so as we move into 2024, especially in advance of October 2024 when custom changes and the movement of parcels via the green lane take effect. Logistics is the backbone of the economy. It is an integral part of complex supply chains across these islands, and it must be allowed to operate efficiently, with the minimum of disruption or delays. That is why, among other asks, Logistics UK has been pressing for real world road testing of proposals with hauliers and logistics businesses ahead of implementation. Conversations with the government on these matters are ongoing.

Britain and Ireland are key trading partners, and it is vital that changes to trading processes under the BTOM are designed to support this smooth flow of trade and minimise disruption. The model in its current draft does not provide this reassurance. More detail is needed especially when it comes to ensuring unfettered access for Northern Ireland Qualifying Goods under the Windsor Framework.

Looking ahead, the industry, north and south, is heading into a period of further transformation when it comes to customs, borders, and trade. The UK government published its Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) in August, which is the framework to realise the ambition of the government’s 2025 Border Strategy. The aim? To create a world-class border system that protects against biosecurity threats and illegal imports while making it as easy as possible to do business and trade. Due to be implemented in stages from January 2024, the BTOM governs the new processes for importing goods – including fresh fruit and vegetables, diary, and meat products – into

26

EXPORT&FREIGHT

Logistics UK will continue to press for clarity on the urgent details logistics businesses need, as well as highlight the challenges surrounding the short timelines before implementation, given that adaptation of business operations and models, including developing, testing, and operationalising new IT systems can take a minimum of six to 12 months. With the Windsor Framework, new GB import controls on EU SPS goods and new Safety and Security Controls planned on all imports, the logistics industry is treading a new path, and needs a solution which works both for logistics and the wider economy; this will continue to be a key focus for Logistics UK throughout 2024.

ACCELERATING TOWARDS NET ZERO With Northern Ireland’ 2050 net zero emission deadline drawing closer, businesses are facing the challenge of maximising operational efficiencies while moving towards decarbonisation at pace.

There are significant challenges right now, with the need to progress decarbonisation plans being held back for several reasons, including the current lack of a devolved government to make key decisions. While logistics businesses are working hard to decarbonise their operations, a lack of certainty and clear direction from the UK government is also hampering progress. This was highlighted in the autumn when the government announced its decision to delay the ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2030 to 2035. The UK government needs to earn business trust by providing certainty, and it needs to focus its attention on ensuring vital supporting infrastructure is in place, and that it is clear on the vehicles and technologies it is backing. While the work conducted by the industry and government to encourage new recruits into HGV driving, including the new driving apprenticeships, Skills bootcamps and the industry’s successful Generation Logistics campaign, skills shortages continue in key roles in NI as in GB. Our members cite shortages in numbers of technicians and dual role drivers available to work, and recruitment for these careers must remain a priority in the next 12 months, to keep the supply chain moving efficiently. Logistics operations are complex, and as we enter 2024, there will continue to be opportunities and challenges for businesses to navigate: decarbonisation, workforce challenges, emerging technologies, and post-Brexit trading arrangements will continue to be key areas of focus. Throughout 2023, Logistics UK worked with its members and the government on the key challenges facing logistics to achieve the best possible results for the sector; we will continue to do so in 2024 to support effective operations.

REFLECTING ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE PAST YEAR With a new year stretching ahead of us, now seems like a good time to reflect on the challenges of 2023, both internally within our own operational area and those faced by the haulage industry, and to consider what 2024 may bring. Over the last year the UK Government carried out a consultation on reforms to Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC). They have now published a proposed set of reforms for drivers operating in the UK which are due to be introduced this summer. These include: • Introduction of a National DCPC qualification (N-DCPC) which will allow drivers to utilise the reformed training programme but will only allow professional drivers to drive within GB and NI. • Reducing the minimum course length from 7 hours to 3.5 hours. The total of 35 hours every five years remains. • Decoupling e-learning from trainer led courses to allow more at home learning. • In spring 2025, introducing

30

a fast route for drivers to return to the workforce through a 7 hour course. • The existing qualification will remain for drivers who operate internationally and will be referred to as the International DCPC (I-DCPC) Proposals to allow the validity of driver CPCs to be extended when there are serious problems (as was done during the pandemic), to allow changes to be made for drivers whose CPCs were acquired abroad, and to enable driver cards to be electronic, will be implemented when time is available to legislate for it in the future. From a TRU perspective, the challenges of 2023 have inspired reflection and consideration as to how we can do things differently to ensure we regulate to allow us to achieve our aims of improving road safety and fair competition

in a more effective way. This is vitally important given the stark number of road fatalities – 65 at the time of writing. We remain committed to road safety and helping to play our part in ensuring that our roads are safer for all. Road fatality or serious injury is something that no person or family should ever have to experience. With this in mind, we have been looking at how we can develop our own approach to achieve more effective regulation. This involves ongoing consideration about: q how we can better direct our resources to where they should be, that is, operators of most risk q how we can streamline our processes and procedures to have a more effective outcome q how we can better work with the industry so as to allow us

to, for example, seek a greater understanding of technological developments within the industry and how, as regulators, such developments can be used to influence behaviours and compliance with the law q better engagement crossdepartmentally with those who deliver regulatory functions to identify how we can work together or learn from the experience of others. While this work progresses, TRU has also been taking forward work to update the Departmental Practice Guidance documents to bring them into line with the recently updated Senior Traffic Commissioners statutory documents on areas of operator licensing and decision making, and to reflect the changes to legislation post Brexit. It is anticipated that the new guidance will be published early in 2024. We look forward to continuing to work with industry to raise awareness around compliance and regulatory requirements.

TURNING THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE TYRE MARKET… The importance of good tyre management cannot be over stated. Tyre neglect is widespread: 17% of MOT test failures are tyre-related. Improved tyre stewardship would bring significant improvement to both the environmental impact of mobility and road safety. Surveys show repeatedly that 25% of vehicles have at least one tyre 25% underinflated. Over 600,000 tyres and 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 are wasted in the UK every year due to tyre under-inflation – and the financial implications can be significant, especially for fleet operators.

vital is proper tyre selection, especially as the cold winter days and nights make driving conditions that much more challenging – and, of course, since the 1st February 2021 it has been illegal to use tyres more than 10 years old on the front steered axles of heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches.

Not only is good tyre management a primary focus in keeping overheads down for the cost-conscious transport operator, but also

TYRE ADVICE

TYRES THAT ARE CARED FOR LAST LONGER Preventable tyre issues can not only cost fleet operators’ money, but they can also pose a risk to drivers and public safety. Tyres that are cared for last longer, give better handling, are safer and can improve fuel economy. Making sure tyres are properly inflated and carrying out an all-around inspection of your tyres before each journey is arguably the simplest precaution to take for a stress-free and smooth point-to-point journey.

TYRE INFLATION Tyres that are either under or over inflated can pose a significant safety risk to the driver and other road users. An underinflated tyre is more susceptible to picking up damage from rough terrain and potholes and can also lead to excessive sidewall flexing, which can result

in a blowout. Fuel efficiency will also be impacted, as low pressures increase a tyre’s rolling resistance. An overinflated tyre can cause uneven wear and impact a vehicle’s grip and handling characteristics. Too much air can also make the tyre more prone to avoidable damage as their comparative stiffness can make them less able to absorb impact. Tyre health – just like our own health – should be taken very seriously. That’s why it’s vital that you’re aware of what to look for when a tyre has begun deteriorating.

WALKAROUND TYRE INSPECTION When you’re inspecting each tyre on your vehicle, firstly look for any cuts or localised wear. Next, check for bulges, a vertical bulge on one side is a result of an impact fracture, meaning the tyre must be replaced. A diagonal bulge on both sides means the tyre can still be used. However, a qualified technician

must make the call on this. Examine the tyre bead fitting line which is a good guide to whether the tyre bead is positioned correctly. Have a look at the wheel rim too. A rim in poor condition can damage the tyre bead. Next, check that all the wheel nuts are present. Do the wheel nut indicators move? They shouldn’t. It’s important to inspect the sidewalls of each tyre for damage. If tyres are scuffed, it could be down to the way the truck’s being driven. You must be able to read the writing on at least one sidewall of each tyre for them to be legal.

TREADING CAREFULLY Using a tread wear indicator is an effective and easy method of checking whether your tread is worn down to the 1mm legal minimum. If the wear indicator is at the same level as the tread, the tyre must be replaced. It’s best practice to have no more than a 4mm difference in tread

depth across the twinned axle. If one tyre does have significantly more tread than its twin, it’ll be taking more of the strain, and could suffer premature wear or even damage to its casing.

TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEMS Commercial vehicle operators also have the option of utilising Continental’s own tyre pressure monitoring system, ContiPressureCheck, and its virtual tyre management platform, ContiConnect 2.0. Drivers can monitor their current tyre pressures and temperatures using the in-cab display and fleet managers can access the same information remotely through the ContiConnect 2.0 desktop site or mobile app.

CONTI360° SOLUTIONS TYRE MANAGEMENT Although drivers and fleet managers are encouraged to check their tyre pressures frequently, customers of the Conti360° Solutions tyre management programme can specify regular fleet inspection checks by an experienced tyre professional. In the event of a puncture at the side of the road, Continental’s Europe-wide, 24/7 breakdown service is on hand to get you moving with minimal downtime.

TYRE DEVELOPMENT:

WHY CUSTOMERS ARE AT THE HEART OF CONTINENTAL’S TYRE DESIGNS

At a first glance, it isn’t always obvious that a truck, bus, or van tyre has been optimised for a specific application. Operators could be forgiven for thinking that tyres, on the whole, all look the same. However, the process of creating the perfect tyre is highly scientific, blending physics, chemistry and product design principles. Continental has a diverse portfolio of tyres, not least in the Commercial Vehicle sector. From construction and semi- off-road tyres, through to haulage, distribution and passenger-carrying vehicle rubber, each has a unique set of characteristics that deliver real-world performance, efficiency, and safety benefits for its customers. To help shed some light on the process of designing and developing a tyre, Alexander Stangner, Head of Product Management Commercial Mobility at Continental Tyres addresses some of the commonly asked questions.

36

EXPORT&FREIGHT

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER BEFORE STARTING THE TYRE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS? It’s no secret that our customers’ needs are a core factor when it comes to the development of our tyres. Whether operators are seeking a tyre that offers low rolling resistance, or one that delivers a high mileage performance, each tyre is designed to speak to their requirements. For instance, vehicles operating on building sites require tyres that sport a tread pattern and sidewall with enhanced durability – a characteristic mostly relevant only to the specific application.

TYRE DEVELOPMENT

WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM Other performance criteria are outlined in our requirement book, such as low tyre noise, aquaplaning safety and braking performance in dry, wet, and snowy conditions. Certain legal requirements must also be fulfilled, such as pass-by noise, wet braking, and rolling resistance standards, as well as several criteria around lifespan. Retreadability is also a key consideration when developing a tyre for commercial use. This is in addition to costsaving potential and sustainability – all of which are significantly important to our customers.

HOW DOES COMPOUND CONTRIBUTE TO THE DESIGN CHOICE? As the tread compound is responsible for adhesion to any surface at a microscopic level, it directly influences the design. It’s also important to note that tread compound has a particularly high influence on tyre wear and rolling resistance. Both the compound and tread need to be synchronised and fine-tuned in order to achieve the desired performance. We also cannot forget the carcass construction, which is another significant contributor to the overall performance of a tyre.

ARE TYRE TREAD PATTERNS ALWAYS DESIGNED FROM SCRATCH, OR ARE THEY AN EVOLUTION OF PREVIOUS DESIGNS? Although we don’t always start with a blank canvas, when it comes to designing a tyre, we do refer to the core design principles for every new tyre. In some cases, we may blend a known pattern with a new rubber compound, or vice versa. Ultimately, it’s producing something that we think best serves that specific requirement book. For brand new tyre lines, however, a new, dedicated tread formulation is needed, which requires a completely original design. Regardless of originality, the tread is a very important element in achieving our performance criteria, as it’s the part of the tyre making direct contact with the road surface. It’s also the tread pattern that is responsible for the drainage of the contact area and provides the grip needed to tackle differing terrains and weather conditions. For adverse conditions, such as snow, a tread pattern with multiple sipes is optimal, while a pattern with little flexibility is required for high mileage performance and outstanding handling characteristics.

HOW MUCH TESTING IS INVOLVED IN THE TREAD DESIGN PROCESS? We must never underestimate the importance of testing. It’s a crucial stage in the tread design development process, as it not only justifies our aims for the tyre, but also ensures legal compliance. We’ll typically test a number of different design candidates as part of a test loop, evaluating the response of each. It’s very much a process of refine, test, refine until we’re satisfied with the product we’ve created. We’re also further developing and testing tyres virtually to

make them even more efficient and sustainable. Naturally, testing is completed in consideration of the customer and legal performance criteria.

HOW LONG DOES THE ENTIRE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS LAST? The duration of the development process varies greatly. It mostly depends on the product development target and how specific the design is. An average would be somewhere between two and five years, depending on how much development is needed above that of the previous tyre.

ROLLING WITH THE SUSTAINABILITY ADVANTAGE Economic and environmental stakes are putting greater pressure on fleets to perfect their tyre strategies, with the focus on reducing energy consumption and carbon footprints a real business priority.

Another way to unlock the full sustainability advantages of energysaving tyres is through regrooving and retreading, to get the optimum total cost of ownership.

Tyre manufacturer Michelin stands out for having two distinct ranges of energy-saving tyres, one for long-distance use at sustained high average speeds, and another for regional use, making the product accessible to more fleets, in more applications, than ever before. Carl Williams, Customer Engineering Support Team Manager at Michelin Tyre plc, explains: “Both the MICHELIN X Line Energy 2 and MICHELIN X Multi Energy tyre ranges reduce the energy consumption of trucks, and can have a substantial and positive impact on a fleet’s bottom line. Crucially, they can do this whilst still having the same grip potential as standard ranges when it comes to traction and braking. At Michelin, we don’t compromise on safety and quality.” Tyres account for around 30 per cent of a traditional diesel- or gaspowered vehicle’s fuel consumption, and are also critical to maximising range performance for the new generation of battery electric trucks. Highlighting this advantage on a diesel-powered 4x2 tractor and

38

Carl Williams.

Williams says: “When you specify MICHELIN truck tyres, you are investing in a sustainable fitment policy, with a tread pattern that can be regrooved and a casing designed for retreading. It’s something we actively promote, as it can lead to improved fuel economy, better electric vehicle range, and lower maintenance costs.”

tri-axle trailer combination at 40-tonnes, on a mix of regional and long-haul work, Williams says: “Our studies show that with a one labelling class improvement in rolling resistance, you can save 1L/100km if you change the tractor unit’s tyres and up to 2L/100km if you change both the tractor unit and trailer’s tyres.

“There’s also an energy saving advantage on battery electric trucks too, where these tyres can offer an improvement in range of between five and 10 per cent. So, if you’re starting with an electric truck offering a range of 500 km, that means you could benefit from up to a 35 km increase in range, which can be significant when returning to base after a shift.”

The process of regrooving increases the potential life of the tyre by around 25 per cent in its most fuel-efficient state – meaning it’s around five per cent more fuel efficient than a new tyre – whilst also extending its grip potential. And when a worn regrooved tyre needs replacing, by following the MICHELIN Remix process, the tyre casing will offer the same mileage performance as a new tyre. It can also be regrooved again to deliver another life in service – extending the tyre’s life once again in its most fuel-efficient state.

Additionally, these aerodynamic cameras mounted above the doors provide a fuel saving benefit of up to 1.5% compared to a standard mirror thanks to reduced wind resistance.

PERSONALISE THE LOOK Customers can now make their IVECO S-Way and X-Way even more individual and increase their sense of belonging to IVECO family with a range of new personalisation options. In addition to the distinctive new IVECO logo available in chrome or gun metal matt, there are eight grille options to choose from. These include glossy finishes, metallic elements or even body-coloured choices, allowing operators to adapt their vehicle to mirror corporate branding or to choose a style which makes their vehicle stand out from the crowd. New technology delivers a userfriendly vehicle interface for comfort and stress-free driving Innovative technology plays a big role in the new IVECO Way Range’s cab. A graphically rich 12- or 10-inch digital instrument display provides the driver with vehicle information, with the screen being configurable to their individual preferences. Featuring an advanced ADAS (Advanced

Driver-Assistance System) interface and full infotainment integration, information is presented clearly, reducing the driver’s cognitive load. All-new fully reconfigurable 10 or 7-inch infotainment displays put media and other key controls at the driver’s fingertips. The responsive screen hosts everything from climate control to fully integrated Alexa experience. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide access to all the apps on the driver’s smartphone, while the new system also enables two phones to be paired via Bluetooth simultaneously. The IVECO Way-Range now gets Full Level2 Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, a big step ahead both in term of Safety and driving comfort. The top level of Drive Assist is capable of aiding the driver in long-haul missions. Highway Assist helps the driver keep position in the centre of the lane, detecting and correcting trajectory deviations via camera, Active Steering and Capacitive Handsoff Detection. Adaptive Cruise Control Stop&Go ensures a fixed speed is maintained, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, also in traffic jams thanks to automatic vehicle stop and restart. On top of this, a comprehensive package of safety features is introduced across the entire WayRange such as Blind Spot and Moving-Off Information Systems that protects nearside and nearby vulnerable road users, Driver Drowsiness Detection, Intelligent Speed Assist and Alcohol Interlock.

Guided by the principle that technology must adapt to the mission and meet mission targets, IVECO has developed electric versions of its light and heavy ranges while continuing to improve its internal combustion engine vehicles, including those running on natural gas, to reduce their environmental impact.

IVECO complements its vehicle offering with a rapidly evolving ecosystem of solutions IVECO Services -designed to support customers in managing their vehicle or fleet easily and efficiently, reduce their Total Cost of Ownership and ensure their business profitability. The offer also includes services developed to enhance the drivers’ lives on the road, improving their comfort and safety. FORKLIFT TRUCKS MARKET MOVING TOWARDS ELECTRIC POWERED MACHINES Choosing the right forklift truck can be a minefield, with so many types and variants on the market. Do you go electric, or stick with diesel or LPG? What are the pros and cons of making such a choice? Without a doubt, the forklift truck market has been undergoing a rapid change in recent years, and it seems inevitable that electric powered machines are set to dominate, not least because of environmental issues and rising fuel prices. Historically, the forklift market has been split roughly 60-40 between LPG or diesel-powered and battery-powered

REAPING THE BENEFITS: ELECTRIFY YOUR FORKLIFTS WITH BYD With over 250 BYD forklifts already in operation across Ireland and sales increasing rapidly year-on-year, many local businesses are reaping the benefits of moving away from engine powered forklifts. Since 2015, Electric Forklifts Ireland has established a position as the market leader in transitioning businesses traditionally reliant on diesel and LPG models, to cleaner, more cost-effective electric forklifts. BYD’s unique range of 1.6 ton – 8 ton forklifts is powered exclusively by their own lithium-iron phosphate batteries. Super-fast charging, long run-times and no battery watering mean they are suitable for a diverse range of applications including manufacturing, warehousing and recycling, even when working 24/7 across multiple shifts. Originally established in 1997 as a battery manufacturer, BYD has rapidly grown into a global leader in renewable energy solutions. Now the second largest lithium battery manufacturer in the world, BYD is poised to overtake Tesla as the world’s top seller of electric cars. With three showrooms already open in Dublin and Cork and Charles Hurst Group poised to open another in Belfast in early 2024, BYD cars will soon be a common sight on Irish roads. This engineering capability is reflected in their range of forklift trucks, where reliability and performance are key.

A SMART BUSINESS MOVE In recent years, rising operational costs have highlighted the need for businesses to run their forklift fleets as efficiently as possible. Unlike electric cars, which are more expensive than their engine powered counterparts, BYD electric forklifts are comparable to, or cheaper than, the cost of engine-powered models. Combined with significant savings on fuel and maintenance, businesses transitioning to BYD electric forklifts can expect tangible financial benefits.

waterproof electrics and increased ground clearance, BYD has proved that its range is capable of meeting and often exceeding the capabilities of engine powered trucks. This evolution in electric forklift technology marks a significant step forward in material handling, offering all businesses a solution that meets their operational needs without compromising on environmental sustainability.

DIVERSE INDUSTRIES

Electric forklifts also bring substantial health and safety improvements to the workplace. The absence of dangerous exhaust fumes makes them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and their low noise and reduced vibration contributes to a more comfortable and less fatiguing experience for operators.

The versatility of BYD electric forklifts is evident in their widespread adoption across a variety of industries. From the fast-paced world of logistics and distribution to the demanding requirements of manufacturing and fabrication, BYD forklifts are proving to be an indispensable tool for many Irish businesses.

Thermo King Axle Power Transforms Sustainable Transport with Successful Trial Results Thermo King has revealed the results of its Axle Power energy recovery system’s trials, proving the technology’s unprecedented value in sustainability and efficiency and emphasizing a significant shift in sustainable refrigerated trailer transport. This system is a result of a collaboration between Thermo King and BPW Bergische Achsen KG, a leader in running gears and mobility services for transport. “At the heart of the Axle Power system lies Thermo King’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and dedication to innovation and efficiency,” said Laurent Debias, product management and marketing leader at Thermo King. “We have closely monitored the trials with

our customers and the findings make it clear that Axle Power is set to become a pivotal component of environmentally conscious refrigerated transportation. Not only does it drastically reduce carbon emissions and noise, but it also significantly diminishes operational costs, responding to

the current market emphasis on sustainability and cost-efficiency.” Since the initiation of trials in the fourth quarter of 2022, Axle Power system has been fieldtested across Europe by different customers in six countries. The configurations of the refrigeration

units varied from hybrid versions with diesel backup engines to engineless, fully electric systems. This intensive real life testing phase featured a wide range of applications including the daily distribution of fresh products and long-haul frozen goods transport with multi-night stops.

Michelin input supports key Transaid road safety projects Two Michelin Training Instructors from the UK have successfully completed secondments with international development organisation Transaid, each spending a week supporting the charity’s professional driver training programmes in Ghana and Zambia. Paul Ryder and Stephane Bonnard, who are normally based at the Michelin Training and Information Centre (MTIC) in Stoke-on-Trent, delivered a bespoke training tailored toward the needs of truck and bus driver trainers – supporting Transaid’s ‘train the trainer’ model, which aims to develop skills at a local level. Their inputs covered everything from understanding tyre sidewall markings to vehicle configurations, wheel fixings, and tyre fitting, including wheel security and safe vehicle jacking procedures. They also taught how to assess tyre wear and damage, what different wear patterns mean, as well as correct vehicle inspection techniques and the importance of tyre pressure maintenance. Ryder flew 16 hours to Zambia to complete his secondment with Transaid’s longstanding partner, the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Lusaka. During a busy week he ran two separate two-day courses, sharing his knowledge with 16 professional driver trainers, who will in turn go on to

train hundreds of drivers each. This was followed by Bonnard’s visit to Ghana, where over a similar timeframe he trained 25 HGV driver trainers and road safety officials, utilising the facilities of local haulier J K Horgle Transport in the port city of Tema.

appreciation for what Transaid is working so hard with its local partners to achieve. It was also a fantastic development opportunity for me personally, and a great way for Michelin to mark 25 years as a founding member of this very special organisation.”

Speaking upon his return, Ryder said: “The feedback from participants at the end of the trainings was fantastic. We covered so much over those four days, and I flew home knowing we’d successfully imparted new skills which they will be able to utilise when training the next generation of drivers.

Ryder’s visit is an extension of the project Transaid began in Zambia in 2008 when it partnered with the ITC, the only public commercial driver training centre in Zambia.

“I felt a huge sense of satisfaction, as they’d been so receptive to the topics we were covering. I am confident our time together will help to create safer roads.”

Transaid’s current work in Ghana began in 2021 and forms part of a three-and-ahalf-year project, funded by Puma Energy Foundation, to raise training standards and expand training capacity for HGV drivers – in a country where approximately 98 per cent of freight is transported by road.

Bonnard shared a similar experience in Ghana, saying: “The participants were really engaged in the process from day one, and so keen to learn. I now have a much better

Volvo FH Electric Wins International Truck of The Year 2024 Volvo Trucks has scooped a prestigious industry award for its Volvo FH Electric, with the model becoming the first-ever electric truck to be named International Truck of the Year. In explaining their decision, the jury praised the electric truck’s performance, seamless acceleration, quietness, and vibration-free behaviour. “With the introduction of the FH Electric, Volvo Trucks has delivered a state-of-theart battery electric vehicle range, suitable for a wide array of transport operations. It’s proof that the energy transition is gaining strength even in today’s challenging business environment,” stated Gianenrico Griffini, Chairman, International Truck of the Year. Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, accepted the prestigious award last night during the prize ceremony at the Solutrans Transport Exhibition in Lyon, France. “I am very proud that our Volvo FH Electric has won this highly respected award. For the first time in history, the transport industry has chosen an electric vehicle as Truck of the Year. The Volvo FH Electric represents a new era in trucking and winning this award clearly shows that the shift to

zero emission transport is happening here and now,” commented Alm. “I sincerely want to thank everyone who has contributed to this success. It’s based on great teamwork among our colleagues within the Volvo Group, and close cooperation with our valued customers, partners and suppliers.” This is the fourth time that Volvo’s iconic FH model has been named International Truck of the Year. The Volvo FH is one of the industry’s most successful models of all time with nearly 1.4 million trucks sold all over the world. The Volvo FH Electric can operate up to 44 tonnes. Production of the truck started in 2022 in Volvo’s factory in Gothenburg, Sweden, expanding to its factory in Ghent, Belgium in 2023. Volvo Trucks was the first global manufacturer to start series production of electric trucks in 2019, and today it has a broad electric line-up with a total of six electric trucks designed to

handle a wide variety of transport assignments. The International Truck of the Year organisation was launched in 1977 and is made up of 24 commercial vehicle journalists from major trucking magazines throughout the UK and Europe. The annual award is given to the truck introduced in the market in the previous 12 months that has made the most significant contribution to road transport efficiency. Several key criteria are evaluated, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, driveability, energy efficiency, environmental ‘footprint’, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

DAF ‘right behind’ Government’s Electric vehicle funding programme DAF Trucks has said it is ‘right behind’ the recent announcement of funding from the UK Government and Innovate UK for the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme. DAF XD Electric and XF Electric tractor units will form part of a 370-vehicle fleet comprised primarily of battery electric, plus some hydrogen-fuelled,trucks, rolled-out through four consortia made up of numerous stakeholders, each with responsibility to demonstrate higher weight / longerdistance zero emission operations and associated infrastructure. The three consortia into which DAF Trucks will deliver XD and XF Electric models are headed-up by Gridserve, Project Zero Emission North and Voltempo. Major operators involved in the programme include Maritime Transport, Marks & Spencer, Menzies, Royal Mail and Eddie Stobart. The funding programme follows the conclusion of the recent Battery Electric Truck Trial (BETT) where

20 DAF LF Electric vehicles were in service with a range of public bodies including the National

Health Service (NHS) and Local Authorities – the results from which are being used in an interactive

website to inform operators’ buying decisions and to help stimulate the adoption of electric trucks. The positive outcome of the trial affirms DAF Trucks’ credentials as a manufacturer of electric trucks – with its LF and New Generation XB models – ideally suited to backto-base operations. The marketleader’s larger XD Electric and XF Electric trucks are the ideal choice for longer distance operations, where publicly accessible charging infrastructure becomes integral to the efficacy of EVs. DAF’s battery electric trucks boast significant benefits for operators, including the use of the more sustainable LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery chemistry. Compared to the main alternative, NMC (nickel manganese cobalt), LFP batteries retain their capacity (state-of-health) for longer and, therefore, deliver a longer lifespan and can be charged at a more consistent level to full capacity, reducing any downtime for charging. DAF’s highest rated 525kWh battery capacity delivers an impressive 480kWh of usable energy, offering a range on a single charge of up to 500km.

SERIES PRODUCTION STARTS FOR RENAULT TRUCKS E-TECH T&C Series production of the Renault Trucks heavy duty electric trucks has just begun at the Bourg-en-Bresse plant. The site has been assembling the brand’s trucks for 60 years and is now set to produce the Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C. Dedicated to regional distribution and urban construction, these vehicles are the latest addition to the manufacturer’s all-electric range, which is the widest on the European market, ranging from 650 kg to 44 t. The Renault Trucks plant in Bourg-en-Bresse, which has been running since 1964, will now also be assembling the Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C. These 44-t trucks, designed for regional distribution and urban construction respectively, are the latest additions to the French manufacturer’s all-electric range, which is the widest in Europe and now covers and decarbonises virtually all urban and regional applications. To accommodate the manufacture of these 44 t electric trucks, Renault Trucks has invested in transforming

and adapting its industrial facilities, as well as building the skills of its employees. The manufacturer is drawing on four years’ experience of manufacturing medium-tonnage electric trucks at its Blainvillesur-Orne plant and applying the same precepts and best practices at Bourg-en-Bresse. The Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C are assembled on the same line as their Diesel equivalents, after which they are transferred to a dedicated 5,200 m2 area – the Renault Trucks E-Tech Factory – where qualified operators and technicians carry out the technical operations specific to electrification, namely assembly of the Electric Drive Unit (EDU) and installation of the transmission and batteries. The electric vehicles then return to the series production process, with performance tests

and track trials to guarantee their reliability and quality.

DECARBONISING Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C cover virtually all urban construction and regional distribution applications. Whether transporting goods, materials or industrial waste, for example, the vehicles can be adapted to any body style thanks to three types of power take-off (PTO): electric, electromechanical or on the gearbox, opening up the possibility of decarbonising new areas of urban and regional activity. With a gross combination weight of up to 44 tonnes, Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C are available in 4x2 and 6x2 tractor versions, with a long cab and a wheelbase of 3,900 mm. In rigid configuration, they are available in 4x2, 6x2 and 8x4

tridem, short or long cab, with a choice of eleven wheelbases, ranging from 3,900 to 6,700 mm. Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C can be equipped with two or three electric motors developing a combined power of up to 490 kW (= 660 hp). To meet customers’ needs in terms of range and activity, the Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C can be fitted with four to six lithium-ion battery packs providing between 390 and 540 kWh of power. The batteries can be recharged by alternating current (AC) up to 43 kW, or by direct current (DC) up to 250 kW. These trucks will be able to travel up to 300 km on a full charge and up to 500 km with an intermediate fast charge (250 kW) lasting one hour (for a vehicle fitted with 6 battery packs). The battery cells and modules are supplied by Samsung SDI and assembled in Ghent, Belgium, at a plant owned by the Volvo Group, of which Renault Trucks is itself part.

Reduce Transit Costs with Logistics UK’s New Freight Ferry Service Shipping goods by ferry can add cost and administrative delays to freight movements, due to fluctuations in pricing and space availability. To help ensure that its members can achieve the very best possible solution for ferry movements, Logistics UK has launched a new partnership with ferry experts Freightlink, the Logistics UK Freight Ferry Service. Working with Freightlink, experts in ferry and tunnel bookings, the new Logistics UK service will enable members to obtain the best possible value for their freight movements with discounts offered in addition to the company’s existing competitive pricing. And as Al Richardson, Head of Membership at Logistics UK explains, the partnership

will provide genuine benefits for member businesses: “Our new service will take advantage of Freightlink’s expertise to provide members with a seamless experience every time they book a journey,” he says. “The combined reputation of both organisations means we are able to offer genuine reductions and first-class customer

support, seven days a week. “All freight vehicles operated by members are eligible to use the service, from smaller vans to HGVs. With so much volatility in the economy, the new service – which links the extensive knowledge of the team at Freightlink with the size and scale of Logistics UK – will ensure that our members

have access to capacity across the entire European ferry network and can keep costs under control while continuing to deliver for customers.” Managing Director of Freightlink, Alex McDonald says: “We are delighted to be partnering with Logistics UK to provide this new solution to their membership. Users of this service will experience unparalleled levels of customer care and industry expertise. We are proud to share this with the Logistics UK members.” The new Logistics UK Freight Ferry Service, powered by Freightlink, will offer discounts on all journeys to and from Great Britain, including travel to Northern and the Republic of Ireland and crossChannel routes. UK freight association welcomes latest recommendation on container shipping rules UK freight forwarders have welcomed the news that the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is recommending, provisionally, that the Consortia Block Exemption Regulation (CBER) should lapse when it expires on 25 April 2024. Steve Parker, Director General of the British International Freight Association (BIFA), says: “The decision follows October’s news that the European Commission would not extend the Consortia Block Exemption Regulation (CBER) and, if it becomes a final decision, will be a sensible conclusion to the ongoing container market public consultation that has been conducted by

the CMA since the start of this year. “When the CMA announced the review in January this year, BIFA expressed our surprise that the authority appeared to issue a provisional position which suggested the extension of a potentially modified CBER into UK legislation. “So, we are pleased that the CMA has effectively reversed that decision and reached the same

conclusion as the European Commission. “However, we note that this is a two stage review, and the CMA is looking for further feedback by December 15th on this provisional recommendation, before it presents its final decision to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade. “There is no room for complacency. The shipping lines have hit out against the EC judgement and we understand that they have been lobbying in London for the UK to retain some form of CBER. “Given the possibility that the shipping lines will make new submissions to the CMA, BIFA will be working with our members to provide further argument that supports the decision to let the CBER lapse.” In the recent past, the UK’s main trade association for freight forwarding and logistics companies has said that its members are extremely concerned that practices undertaken by container shipping lines, as well as easements and exemptions provided to them, have been distorting the operations of the free market to the detriment of international trade, businesses and consumers. BIFA, and its members, are not anti-shipping line. The association wants to ensure that there is a suitable balance between shipping lines as carriers, and its members as customers; points it has made during various meetings with the CMA. The CMA’s provisional recommendation suggests that whilst this regulatory change, if implemented, will not end shipping line consortia and alliances, it will allow greater and ongoing scrutiny of such arrangements; and ensure that the lines will be subject fully to competition law. That will be welcomed by BIFA and its members.

Dublin Port’s new €127m freight terminal officially opened

Dublin Port Company (DPC) has announced the opening of T4, a newly redeveloped RoRo freight terminal in the Port costing €127m, which was officially launched by the Irish Minister of State, Jack Chambers, TD. Self-financed by DPC and delivered on time, and on budget, T4 marks a major milestone in the delivery of the ABR Project, the first of three major capital development projects under its Masterplan to futureproof Dublin Port’s cargo handling capacity to 2040. T4 will handle more than 220,000 RoRo units annually, which equates to over one-fifth of all RoRo units at Dublin Port based on 2022 volumes and more RoRo freight per annum than any other port in the Republic of Ireland. T4’s capacity comes from 4.1ha of existing port lands having been reconfigured, creating more efficient space for handling European and UK unaccompanied RoRo units. It comes into operation at a time of growing demand for

unaccompanied RoRo freight services (goods on trailers transported by ferry without a driver) to and from the greater Dublin market post-Brexit. It has also enabled the opening of a new transhipment route to Santander. T4 brings into operation 3km of new quay walls, upgrading Victorian-era port infrastructure to service direct routes between Dublin and Liverpool/Heysham by ferry operator Seatruck. The work also involved the demolition of an old jetty, replaced with two best in class modern jetties of 270m each, that will accommodate the largest ferries measuring 240m in length and which have been future-proofed to allow for shore to ship power in the years ahead.

Launching T4, Minister of State, Jack Chambers, TD said; “Dublin Port is Ireland’s largest freight and passenger port handling approximately 51% of national tonnage. Its importance is even more pronounced in the unitised freight sector as it handles 71% of all Load-on/Load-off and 80% of all Roll-on/ Roll-off tonnage in and out of the country. “In line with its Masterplan, Dublin Port has been progressing the necessary infrastructure to provide for increases in throughput. T4 will greatly enhance Rollon/Roll-off capabilities at the Port. “As an island nation, sufficient capacity and the efficient and seamless operation of our ports are indispensable for the success of Ireland’s importers and exporters.” Barry O’Connell, Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company, said; “Dublin is already one of the most efficient ports in Europe. With T4, we are driving even more efficiencies and facilitating growing customer demand for direct shipping routes between Dublin, the UK and Europe. “Even with T4 now fully in operation, Dublin is running at 91% average capacity and therefore it is imperative that our plans to complete all three of our Masterplan 2040 projects continue as planned. “This will ensure we create the capacity needed to support the ongoing growth in the economy to 2040, while providing new public amenities that will support the growth of our city and neighbouring community for decades to come.”

Opening up the Port Importantly the development of T4 has also facilitated the closure of an entrance onto East Wall Road paving the way for DPC’s Liffey Tolka Greenway project on East Wall Road to commence construction in 2024. This will see the transformation of the East Wall Road with a new dedicated 1.4km cycle and pedestrian route which will eventually form part of the 16.5km of cycleway / walkway planned as part of the overall Masterplan. Irish Minister of State, Jack Chambers with Barry O’Connell, Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company.

Founded in 1923, and with three generations of family still working in the business, the dealership has received merits for its excellent customer service and staff work ethic – and that continues to be translated into growing sales. Proving a popular purchase is the Isuzu D-Max and the Maxus Deliver9 which we recently featured in several ‘test drive’ reports, and as our accompanying photographs demonstrate.
