What a busy few months we all have ahead of us. Bauma 2025, of course, is the major event in the construction industry calendar, being held in Munich in April, but we also have ICE Expo 2025, hailed as Ireland’s largest construction & plant equipment show to look forward to at Punchestown Racecourse in May, in addition to a major workplace health conference in Belfast.
Many of us will also be looking forward to the Construction Employers Federation’s 80th anniversary, being marked with a gala dinner at Titanic Belfast in March. It will celebrate Northern Ireland’s construction heritage and look to the future of the industry here.
We report on all of those events in this issue, as well as focusing on a number of companies who are making their mark here, including WR Kennedy and Creagh Concrete, and in other news, we hear from Volvo Construction Equipment who has unveiled its biggest and boldest articulated hauler launch to date and JCB who are celebrating a major machine milestone with the production of its one millionth backhoe loader.
Good news, too, is that Ireland recorded its lowest ever rate of work-related fatalities in 2024 according to provisional data published by the Health and Safety Authority. The construction sector, in particular, saw a significant decline from 10 fatalities in 2023 to 5 in 2024.
Our ‘view from the cab’ this month focuses on a new 2.5 tonne zero tail swing JCB and a new generation EC500 crawler excavator from Volvo CE.
Meanwhile, it’s well done to the Lighthouse Charity who once again set new records over the past year, reaching more people and delivering more support than ever before, with its helpline advisors and case workers delivering an amazing £4.98m of charitable support to 5695 families who reached out for help through the charity’s free and confidential service.

CITB encourages visitors to register for Open Doors 2025
People interested in pursuing a career in construction are now able to register to attend Open Doors 2025, which returns 17-22 March. The event is being delivered by Build UK in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and CSCS, supported by media, community and industry partners, who are encouraging people to book a place and attend. Open Doors offers a unique opportunity for young people and those looking for a change of career to go behind the scenes of live construction sites, manufacturing facilities, offices, and training centres across the UK. Those who attend Open Doors will be able to learn about a career in construction through site tours and Q&A sessions with construction professionals and in some cases interactive experiences.
Construction is a lucrative career.
The average UK construction worker’s salary is over £44,000, nearly £9,000 higher than the average UK salary. There are more than 180 different
occupations in construction and over 100 different construction apprenticeship roles that lead to careers in the industry for people at every stage of their life.
Tim Balcon, Chief Executive, CITB said: “Open Doors is a platform for the construction industry to come together and demonstrate the benefits of a career in construction – the valuable skills to be learnt, the sense of accomplishment seeing a project completed, and the well-paid roles available. There truly is
nothing else like it to learn firsthand if construction is for you – and more importantly, which aspect of construction is for you.
“From roles on site to the office, the construction industry is diverse with plenty of opportunities to upskill and develop throughout the years. No role is the same as the other.
“I am looking forward to visiting an Open Doors event in March and witnessing the impact of this unique event in-person, from potential
apprentices to those looking for a change in career, there is something to suit everyone.”
Julie White, Chair, Build UK said: “Never has this type of initiative been more important to help meet the Government’s commitment to ‘Get Britain Building’.
“While the tours themselves provide intriguing backdrops to explore the range of roles available, they are also a unique opportunity to talk to construction leaders and apprentices about their route into the industry.
“Nearly 90% of the 5,000 visitors that attended an Open Doors event last year said they were more likely to consider a career in construction following their visit, so I’d urge everyone to book onto an event now and find out just what construction has to offer!”
CITB’s Construction Skills Network report revealed that the construction industry needs to recruit 50,000 new workers a year until 2028, demonstrating the scale of opportunity for new entrants.
From April to December last year, CITB’s New Entrant Support Team (NEST) has already helped over 2,676 people start an apprenticeship.
In total, CITB supported more than 24,000 apprentices during their courses in 2024.

Work-related fatalities rate in Ireland reaches record low in 2024
Ireland recorded its lowest ever rate of workrelated fatalities in 2024 according to provisional data published by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).
The fatality rate per 100,000 workers has fallen from 2.7 to 1.2 in the ten-year period from 2015 to 2024, marking the fewest work-related deaths since the establishment of the Authority in 1989.
A total of 33 people lost their lives in work-related incidents in 2024, a reduction of almost a quarter on 2023 fatalities. The construction sector, in particular, saw a significant decline from 10 fatalities in 2023 to 5 in 2024, a decline of 50%, while the agriculture sector saw a decline from 20 fatalities in 2023 to 12 last year, a decline of 40%.
Commenting on the significant reduction on fatalities in Irish workplaces, Conor O’Brien, Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority, said, “It is positive to see such a decline in the overall fatality figures for 2024, in particular the significant reduction in the high risk agriculture and construction sectors. However, every workrelated death is preventable. Vigilance and advance planning around health and safety at work is crucial to lowering the number of deaths further”.
Key 2024 Statistics
- In the last ten years (20152024), the rate of fatalities per 100,000 workers decreased from 2.7 in 2015 to 1.2 in 2024.
- Two thirds of all fatalities (22) occurred to those aged 55 and over.
- Of the 33 fatalities in 2024, the self-employed accounted for 18 (55%).
- Agriculture, forestry and fishing accounted for 12 fatalities, all of which were farming incidents representing over a third of all fatalities from a sector employing just 4% of the workforce.
- The construction sector saw a significant decline from 10 fatalities in 2023 to 5 in 2024, a decline of 50%.
- Vehicle related incidents (10 fatalities), incidents involving heavy/falling objects (6 fatalities) and falling from height (5 fatalities) were the leading causes of work-related fatalities in 2024 accounting for 64% of all fatalities.
- Of the 33 fatalities in 2024, 30 were male and 3 were female.
- Cork, Dublin and Offaly accounted for the highest records of fatalities in 2024, with 3 fatalities occurring in each county.
“The reality is that behind these figures are people who have died, leaving behind heartbroken families, friends and communities.
I offer my sincere condolences to all of those who have lost a loved one in a work-related incident last year and I urge employers to start planning now for 2025. Review your work practices, make risk assessment a core part of how you do business, and pay particular attention to high-risk activity including working at height, vehicle handling and working with machinery,” added Conor O’Brien.
Mark Cullen, Assistant Chief Executive and Chief Inspector with the HSA, commented, We know from the data that those aged 55 and over represent two-thirds of 2024 fatalities. As
Ireland’s labour force is ageing, employers must pay particular attention to work activity involving older workers and ensure that the risk to their health and safety is proactively managed.
“We are urging employers and their workers to consider carefully the task you’re asking others to carry out or that you are about to undertake. Complete a risk assessment and make sure the right precautions are in place, and nobody is putting themselves or others in danger.”
In 2024 the HSA marked 35 years since it was established and published its Strategy Statement 2025-2027 with a view to addressing significant change in the workplace and broader society. With a wide mandate promoting and enforcing work-related safety and health legislation, as well regulating chemicals and industrial products and providing the national accreditation service, the new strategy is designed to support competitiveness and the sustainability of Ireland’s economy.
In implementing the strategy, the Authority will be ambitious and innovative, focusing on achieving tangible outcomes.
Commenting on the new strategy, Conor O’Brien said, “The world
of work is changing, driven in many ways by technology and new ways of working. Many workplaces are being transformed by technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning, and these changes are creating opportunities and challenges for safe and healthy working.
In addition, changing demographics, including an ageing workforce and a growing number of vulnerable, nonEnglish speaking, and migrant workers, represent significant factors to consider. Our new strategy has been designed to address these developments, and support workers and employers in fostering safe, compliant and productive work environments.
“The data clearly shows that workers in small and micro enterprises experience a much higher rate of fatal incidents compared to the national average. Particular emphasis will be placed on making the Authority’s range of supports and guidance accessible to smaller businesses during this strategy period. Regardless of the size of workplace or number of employees, all workers are entitled to a safe and healthy work environment.”

SIX WAYS ROKBAK TRUCKS MAKE OPERATING STRAIGHTFORWARD
Despite their impressive size and capability, driving a Rokbak articulated hauler is remarkably straightforward. Thanks to features such as an intuitive control layout and operator-friendly design, Rokbak ADTs combine innovation, safety and ease of use –a testament to the articulated hauler manufacturer’s advanced engineering and focus on productivity gains for end-users.
INTELLIGENT CONTROL DESIGN
Each Rokbak hauler’s control system prioritises simplicity and reliability. Both the RA30 and RA40hauler models feature ergonomic physical switches for machine functions, which are strategically placed within easy reach. This allows operators to quickly familiarise themselves with the cab’s setup and get to work efficiently. Unlike competitors who may rely on complex touchscreens or soft-button pads, Rokbak’s robust, durable switch packs offer longevity and ease of use. The modern instrument panel provides a clear, automotive-inspired display for operational feedback, allowing operators to focus on their tasks. These thoughtful features not only enhance efficiency but also minimise nonproductive time caused by operational confusion.
ERGONOMIC ENHANCEMENTS
The cab of a Rokbak truck has been meticulously designed to enhance operator safety and comfort. Air-conditioned, pressurised interiors and air-suspension seats reduce fatigue and increase productivity. Near-360-degree visibility is achieved through strategically placed mirrors and standard rear-view camera allowing awareness of environment and site obstacles. Combined, these elements create a work environment that maximises
operator confidence and efficiency, plus increased safety in operation on site.
SAFETY FIRST
The inclusion of an always-active exhaust retarder and a selectable transmission retarder enhances safety and performance on challenging terrains. Operators can easily switch the transmission between automatic and manual modes for precise control on grades, ensuring smooth handling and reduced fatigue.
Feedback from seasoned operators highlights the light and effortless steering, which is particularly beneficial for navigating tight turns or multi-bend routes on demanding worksites.
UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE FOR TOUGH TASKS
Whether navigating rough terrains or adverse weather, Rokbak haulers excel. The RA30 and RA40 offer balanced calibrated powertrains, adaptive gear shift schedules and exceptional tractive effort. The suspension systems ensure constant tyre-ground contact for stable operation, even on uneven surfaces. Additionally, enclosed oil-immersed disc brakes provide safe, repeatable braking, reducing the risk of heat fade and protection against damage on deep rutted ground surfaces. These features collectively allow Rokbak haulers to deliver unmatched performance in demanding environments.
THE SHOCK FACTOR
Handling full loads or steep inclines is where Rokbak haulers truly shine. The trucks’ suspension systems absorb shocks and vibrations, providing a planted feel even under heavy loads, through bends and on grades. Intuitive steering, advanced retarders and efficient brake systems ensure safe and stable descents, making Rokbak haulers a reliable choice for maximum productivity on challenging sites.
STRAIGHTFORWARD CERTIFICATION AND USE
Operators new to Rokbak’s haulers can expect a short learning curve, with most becoming proficient after a brief training period. In the UK, for instance, operator training typically spans four days and covers both theoretical and practical aspects of using articulated haulers. Participants often earn Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) certification, permitting them to operate any ADT on a jobsite.
The Rokbak design mitigates common
operational challenges through a combination of training and technology. For example, understanding when to use features such as retarders or differential locks is crucial. Overuse can lead to inefficiencies or wear, but operator manuals and an extensive “How To” video library – accessible via in-cab QR codes – help operators refine their skills. These resources ensure optimal machine productivity and longevity while maintaining operator safety.
With a focus on innovation and userfriendliness, Rokbak continues to lead the way in articulated hauler design. The RA30 and RA40 exemplify the Scottish articulated hauler manufacturer’s dedication to producing trucks that are not only high-performing but also safe and easy to operate.
engcon launches new model of tiltrotator
engcon has launched a new and improved tiltrotator for excavators in the 2-4 ton weight class, EC204. This model has the same functions and features as engcon’s larger models. More and more people are discovering the benefits of tiltrotators. One of the main advantages is that it makes digging more efficient and broadens the excavator’s range of applications. The tiltrotator transforms the excavator into a flexible tool carrier, reducing both the need for other machines and labor around the excavator. The result is increased profitability for the end customer.
engcon is constantly working to improve its products. As a further step forward in improving for the end customer, engcon is now launching an improved version of the popular EC204 with the same functions and features as engcon’s larger models.
The updated model of the EC204, which is suitable for excavators in the 2-4 ton size class, features engcon’s EC-Oil quick coupler system both above and below the tiltrotator, which is unique on smaller machines. This makes it easier to change attachments or to disconnect the tiltrotator if necessary. It offers a 45-degree tilt angle, infinite rotation and the ability to easily mount different attachments, contributing to
versatility and flexibility in excavation work. The model is also prepared for EPS, engcon’s innovative positioning system.
“I’m very proud that we can deliver our EC-Oil automatic quick coupler system both above and below the tiltrotator for the 2 to 4 ton class, this really makes the excavator the ultimate tool carrier,” says Martin Engström, Product Manager at engcon. “Our

JCB RULES AT JOHN RODGERS HIRE
BY GARY BROWNE-LECKEY
It was a lovely sharp, sunny day when we travelled to the picturesque town of Newcastle. We were on our way to meet the owners of John Rodgers Plant Hire, in an industrial estate on the way into Newcastle - which also houses John Rodgers Building Supplies and Rodgers Construction. Waiting to greet us were Co-Owners Adrian Rodgers and Gareth Malley with their Plant Hire Manager Adrian Truesdale.
Two new JCB diggers were on display in the yard for our inspection before we moved to a building site up in the hills around Newcastle, where Rodgers Construction were building two new houses. There we found the 2.5t zero tail-swing machine working on site. It was a beautiful setting with fabulous views towards St. John’s Point.
At this point we were introduced to ‘Maisy’. Now, in case you are wondering I must explain one of the days more amusing scenes. Three strapping, bearded Mourne men informed us that one machine was called Maisy and the other was called Daisy... as apparently Rodger’s name all their machines!
The JCB was fitted with an ORSI brush cutting head, a great bit of kit which Rodgers also purchased from Dennison JCB, where they have bought all their 11 strong fleet of JCB’s. Their plant collection includes two 13t diggers, three teleporters of different sizes, three dumpers and the two new mini excavators. The team have nothing but praise for both JCB and Dennison’s and Director Adrian told us how they got involved with the company.
“Basically, John Calderwood called me and told me that his son Ian had started selling diggers instead of cars, and that he would be at the Balmoral Show, so we went to the show and ended up buying a digger from him, and that was 5 years ago!”
The team at Rodgers also have a huge liking for JCB and the way they look after customers when they visit the JCB headquarters. Both Adrian and my colleague Martin from Plant & Civil Engineer (who visits JCB regularly when there is a new product launch) say that no-one can do hospitality like JCB.
SMOOTH PERFORMER
So, to get down to the gritty specs’ the JCB is powered by the brand-new 18.4kw Kohler engine, it is remarkably quiet even under duress as we discovered when Adrian was loading full buckets of wet, dense, soil. We could easily have a conversation close by with no need to shout! The other impressive thing was that the machine was very stable, even with no blade on the ground At nearly full stretch with a full bucket the added counterweight on the rear of the digger stopped the usual “bounce effect” which can be common on smaller diggers. The other significant feature here is the zero tail-wing on this digger, an incredibly useful addition in so many ways. The machine is packed with other useful and clever features, follow me home lights for added safety and ease, flat glass, aircon as an option, Bluetooth connectivity, rally style seating which is fully adjustable, radio and flat screen LCD control panel. And it also has the capacity to have up to 10 pre-set controls so different operators can set the machine to suit themselves.
The 2GO hydraulic system has a 2-step system to prevent accidental operation and another excellent feature is the auto kickdown motors which adapt to the conditions of the
terrain and help to keep smooth operation, especially when dozing with the blade. It has twin piping for ease and functionality for different attachments, also the quick release system is very fast. We watched as Adrian changed from the brush cutter to a drainage bucket in about a minute!
EASILY TRANSPORTED
An important thing to note is that the machine comes in well under 3500kg, so towing is not an issue. Cost saving is so important these days and JCB have looked at this as a major consideration, so they
have used flat glass which is much cheaper to replace. The metal panels around the machine are simply bolted on and very easy and quick to change if damage occurs, servicing intervals have been lengthened and the digger comes with greasing intervals of 500 hours. Auto stop and idle functions reduce fuel use, a significant benefit with fuel being a major cost of operation.
As we left a very sunny Newcastle and the Rodgers team both Martin and I remarked that there are definitely worse jobs than working for Plant & Civil Engineer magazine!
Gareth Malley, Adrian Rodgers & Adrian Truesdale.
VOLVO CE UNVEILS BRAND NEW RANGE OF ARTICULATED HAULERS
Volvo Construction Equipment has unveiled its biggest and boldest articulated hauler launch to date. The new range is designed to meet the modern-day need for connected solutions, productivity performance, and emission reduction.
The updated models, which will be available in the Irish market from Pat O’Donnell & Co, distributors of Volvo Construction Equipment since 1970, mark a significant technological leap forward. That’s thanks to key innovations such as a new electronic system and an in-house developed transmission, delivering fuel efficiency improvements of up to 15% depending on model and industrial application. Furthermore, the machines’ new state-of-the-art design has been constructed in such a way as to adapt over time to fit future drivetrains.
A highlight of this launch is the all-new A50 model, which expands customer opportunities in the demanding hauler segment. This addition, available in
selected markets, underscores Volvo CE’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers by enhancing operational capabilities and offering more choices.
The result is cutting-edge, safe, and productive machines that have been purpose-built to lower total cost of ownership and respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow across the toughest of worksites, especially when combined with Volvo CE’s pioneering digital solutions, such as the Haul Assist with onboard weighing.
Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE said:
“For nearly 60 years we have been leading the way with our range of articulated haulers
and now with today´s launch of a new range of outstanding products, including one completely new model, we prove that there are no limits to our capacity for innovation. Our customers know to expect a first-class operation when they get into one of our haulers, but that experience has just got even better with a host of cutting-edge features designed with our customers in mind.”
A CIRCULAR APPROACH
Developed to be among the most fuelefficient hauling solutions on the market, the new models have also been built with a focus on sustainability. This includes the introduction of low carbon emission steel – made from recycled materials and produced using fossil free electricity and biogas – in serial production of haulers manufactured at the Braås site.
Given steel is a major component in Volvo CE products – and traditionally generates significant carbon emissions – material circularity is another example of Volvo CE taking action across its operations to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

“Our partnership with Volvo CE and specifically the Volvo articulated hauler is something we are very proud of.
“Volvo CE combine all the heritage of the world’s first articulated hauler with worldclass innovation to develop this new range of articulated haulers which we are delighted to bring to the Irish market.”
AGING INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS URGENT ADDRESSING, SAYS INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS
The recently published Institution of Civil Engineers’ State of the Nation report, Infrastructure in 2025,focuses on three key areas that, it says, need strategic investment and long-term planning: transport, energy, and water.
It draws on the technical insights of its global membership to identify some important themes.
It says the impact of climate change on the UK’s aging infrastructure is accelerating and exacerbating issues. Delaying investment in the transport network and water infrastructure could have safety and supply implications.
“Second, if anything is to improve, decision makers and industry must work together to end the cycle of short termism. Long-term plans must be agreed, committed to, and delivered.
Third, the engineering community must acknowledge the public’s frustration with challenges like the sewage overflow problem and improve communication, transparency, and trust.”
ICE President Professor Jim Hall said, ‘Now is the time to establish a clear vision of how infrastructure can contribute to a better future for the UK. We need real prioritisation and long-term strategic thinking, and we need to apply creative solutions to the challenges we face. All this needs to be supported by committed investment.’
KEY AREAS
The report says climate change, lack of maintenance, supply chain challenges, and the skills gap are creating a ‘perfect storm’ for UK’s transport infrastructure, and the network is aging badly.
It calls on ICE members to be honest about the risks of aging assets and to help decision makers understand what choosing not to invest could mean.
In a stark assessment, it states,“parts of the network are perhaps not as safe as the public thinks while some structures should have usage restrictions, but don’t.”
The report highlights the importance of initiatives like bridge near-miss reporting campaign run by the Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures UK (CROSS-UK) in raising awareness about the importance of maintenance and improving infrastructure’s resilience.
Investment, sensible town planning to reduce the need for short car journeys, and intelligent data use must all be part of a strategic, long-term plan to address the challenges, with maintenance and renewal prioritised over expansion.
TIDAL ENERGY
The report says the climate crisis and cost of energy have made energy security a leading concern for successive UK governments and the public.
“There has been significant progress to increase the use of renewable energy, and the UK is committed to cutting emissions from 1990 levels by 81% by 2035. To
meet this ambitious goal, the country must diversify how it gets its energy.
“Tidal energy is presented as a ‘big idea’ worth exploring and as one that excites civil and infrastructure engineers. ICE members say this is an area where they feel their expertise could make a ‘real difference’.
RECYCLE WASTEWATER
The water sector is grappling with the complex and overlapping challenges of aging infrastructure, the need to decarbonise assets, and the impact of climate change.
While reducing sewage overflow and increasing the use of nature-based solutions and sustainable drainage systems must all continue to be priorities, the biggest long-term challenge the water sector faces is supply.
Despite the UK’s famously damp climate, the nation’s daily demand for water is expected to exceed the current supply by more than a third within 25 years.
Reducing leakage and building new reservoirs are already part of long-term plans – increasing the use of treated wastewater must also be part of the solution.

MARKETS PICKING UP, BUT UNCERTAINLY REMAINS IN SOME QUARTERS
January began slowly for many as a result of the bad weather but having had quite a number of visits to members during January and February the market seems to have picked up and hopefully that will continue over the coming weeks and months. Obviously, those of you who carry out work for the public sector and the arms-length are continuing to endure uncertainty as budgets are inadequate and inconsistent. The recent speech by the Secretary of State, Hiliary Benn, in which he criticised the Executive and encouraged them to make the difficult and collective decisions around funding and revenue raising required to fundamentally change the delivery of public services here in Northern Irelandhas once again challenged our local MLAs.I’ve said before we will judge the success of the Executive on the difficult and unpopular decisions they make, not the easy and popular ones. At a recent Assembly Infrastructure Committee meeting Dr Garry Curran (Head of Metering and Developer Services NI Water) provided a stark overview of the condition of the region’s wastewater infrastructure assets, and how this is constraining development. He said that all areas across Northern Ireland are now impacted by unsatisfactory wastewater infrastructure, and 40% of storm overflows are classed as unsatisfactory, meaning they need upgraded or need to be closed. Dr Curran said that there is a development plan in place by NIW, but funding for it faces a £0.8bn shortfall for the next eight years. These shortfalls will begin to impact water management, meaning NIW are unable to create sludge disposal facilities and measures to transition to a net zero environment. Dr Curran cautioned that the severity of this issue is contributing towards NI’s wastewater and water environment becoming a severe, permanent problem, adding that these issues will negatively impact the aims of the Programme for Government, especially
those concerning housing, the economy and environment. Our MLAs can no longer cling onto ideological excuses and continue to kick the can down the road.
CONSULTATIONS
MPANI are currently finalising our response to the Executives consultation on the 2025/26 draft budget. Hopefully this will be the last one-year budget we will have and next year will see the start of a multi-year budgetary cycle. The solution to the sustainable delivery of public services in NI is revenue raising. It’s staring us in the face, and the reality is if only our locally elected MLAs would make 4 or 5 key strategic decisions on revenue raising, planning reform, energy market reform and NI Water funding, this place we all call home could be an economic powerhouse.
Other consultations MPANI have responding to recently and will be responding to on our Members behalf are:
- Call for evidence on environmental governance
- Call for evidence on socialisation of electricity grid connection costs.
- Assembly Windsor Framework Scrutiny Committee call for evidence on changes to the EU Construction Products Regulations. The DfE consultation on changes to how the costs associated with new connections to the electricity distribution network are recovered is very important for MPANI members as a rural industry. Under the proposals, a higher proportion of the cost to reinforce new connections to the electricity grid will be spread across all customers and paid for over a longer period. This is known as ‘socialisation of connection costs’.
This new policy is what MPANI have been advocating for some time. For more information click on https://www.economy-ni. gov.uk/news/murphy-seeks-views-changeselectricity-reinforcement-connection-charges
On a positive note Belfast Harbour unveiled a ‘transformative’ new strategy setting out a programme to invest more than £300m in capital projects across the port and Harbour Estate over the next five years. The strategy – Advance Regional Prosperity 2025-2029 – outlines Belfast Harbour’s plans to invest £208m in significant port improvements and £105m in the ongoing regeneration and development of the Harbour Estate and waterfront. The strategy includes the largest single capital project ever undertaken by Belfast Harbour, a proposed £90m investment in a new deepwater quay which will be able to accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise vessels and also expand the port’s capacity and capabilities for offshore wind turbine assembly and installation. This is a project that will require significant volumes of mineral products and is welcomed by our industry.

Noel Gormley, Major Connections
Manager NIE Networks
Stephen Kelly, Chief Executive
Manufacturing NI
Laoiseach Scullion, Policy and Public Affairs Advisor of Renewable NI
Gordon Best, MPANI
We look forward to seeing as many members as possible at this event and at our May Local Member Forum on Thursday 22nd May in the Seagoe Hotel Portadown, the 18th September in the Armagh City Hotel and the 4th December in the Tullyglass Hotel Ballymena.
NET ZERO JOURNEY
The Association recently met with senior DAERA / NIEA officials to discuss a number of key concerns and talk about how we can re-establish, recognising of course the time pressures and resource issues currently being faced by the Department, the beneficial liaison our Association has had with DAERA and specifically NIEA in the past. We updated the officials on work on decarbonisation and our Net Zero Journey, our role as a partner in the Industrial Decarbonisation NI project, work with Queens University on the use of Biochar in concrete products, the potential of Biomethane and use of carbon capture in the production and transport of mineral products and the potential use of Green Hydrogen for the production and transport of mineral products. We also discussed the establishing of an Independent Environment Protection Agency, our support for Biodiversity Net
Gain in NI, promoting and supporting environmental best practice across Industry and our ongoing concerns about current knowledge and experience within NIEA. We agreed to meet again and re-establish a closer liaison by which we will work together on compliance support and improving the knowledge of our industry within DAERA.
PLANNING REFORMS
The head of the Department for Infrastructure Planning Reform Team, Rosemary Daly, will be meeting with the Association’s Planning Committee in early March. I met with Rosemary and her team at a recent CBI Infrastructure Committee meeting at Titanic Quarter where we heard about the work ongoing on reforming the planning process in NI.
At that meeting I highlighted an important MPANI proposal to form a “shared service” for minerals planning across the 11 local councils. I made the point that minerals planning is a very specific skills set and the original decision to move minerals planning from the old minerals unit within DoE to planning offices within 11 councils was, in our view, the wrong one.
We will discuss this particular issue in more detail when we meet in March.
MPANI has also been active in working with a number of local councils and strategic planning within DfI to improve the skills set and mineral planning knowledge within the Councils by promoting the now widely recognised “Mineral Planning for Mineral Planners” training course developed by the Institute of Quarrying UK and endorsed by the RTPI.
We will also highlight and discuss the changes to planning that have been proposed via the NI Audit Office 2022 report, the 2022 Assembly Public Accounts Committee report, the 2023 Turley NI Chamber report and the 2019 Irvine Report on statutory consultees. Many of the recommendations are the same and we would support the vast majority if not all.

Construction Professionals Rank the UK’s Greatest Engineering Feats
Construction professionals across the industry have weighed in, revealing their picks for the UK’s most impressive engineering marvels of the 21st century. The findings, based on a survey of over 500 industry pros, are part of a broader study on sector achievements and satisfaction, spearheaded by Hubexo UKI’s NBS and Glenigan, both leading technology platforms for construction. Though tightly contested, professionals crowned The Shard, an iconic gem on London’s skyline, the most impressive engineering feat of the century (35%). As the tallest building in the UK, The Shard was chosen for its groundbreaking construction techniques, including innovative top-down building methods, solidifying its status as a modern engineering marvel. Incredibly, 95% of the construction materials used in the building are recycled.
Interestingly, The Shard’s popularity soared among professionals at larger construction firms (£50-100 million turnover), highlighting their admiration for its size and scale. Over half (57%) ranked the skyscraper as their top choice.
Olympics
Close behind was the 2012 Olympics, with nearly one in three (31%) praising its mix
of innovation, sustainability, and urban transformation as the top engineering achievement in the last 100 years. Built on a former industrial site, engineers transformed polluted land into a thriving, sustainable complex, featuring wetlands, green spaces, and renewable energy systems. The stadium itself was standout, designed to be lightweight and modular, and its use of recycled materials set new standards in sustainable construction.
Just shy of third place was the Battersea Power Station redevelopment (30%),
celebrated for retaining its Art Deco charm while showcasing cutting-edge heating and cooling innovation. Professionals praised its CHP network, seamlessly delivering efficient HVAC and electricity to the vibrant mixed-use complex.
Crossrail
Other projects of note were the UK’s Crossrail project (28%), now known as the Elizabeth Line, one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, which revolutionised transport in London and its surrounding regions, and London’s Super Sewer (17%), designed to capture 39 million tons of untreated sewage annually.
Dr Stephen Hamil, Innovation Director at NBS said: “This century has so far delivered some of the most iconic and groundbreaking building projects ever. Yet, for industry insiders, The Shard still stands tall as one of the UK’s most impressive feats of design and engineering.
“The rise of digital construction and building product data sets the stage for groundbreaking new projects – with the likes of the Houses of Parliament Restoration and One Undershaft still to come to fruition, it’s an exciting time for anyone working in design and construction.”

TIME TO ENCOURAGE CHANGE
Unprecedented levels of traffic caused congestion in Belfast City Centre prior to Christmas. Last month I examined the soft approaches that the Department had introduced to encourage users to get out of cars and use more sustainable travel options such as new public transport services.
Park and ride or walking and cycling initiatives. This month I consider what other authorities are doing around the world to provide a “stick” to encourage us to make a change. While we sit in ourcars, we must remember that we are not sitting in traffic we are the traffic.
I have observed the arrangements in other busy locations and city centres and the measures that local authorities took to reduce congestion and create clean air zones. London first introduced a congestion zone on 17th February 2003, and this
was extended west to cover Kensington and Chelsea on 19 February 2007.
It initially created a clean air zone for 3 million adults living inside the north and south circular road. In June 2020, as a condition of the Government’s financial aid to Transport for London during the Coronavirus pandemic, the congestion charge cost was raised, and the hours of operation were extended. Drivers crossing the cordon must pay a fee each day that they cross the cordon and in 2003 it was set at £11.50 and has been rising ever since.
In New York City, on January 5th, 2025, the local authority implemented a congestion pricing plan, becoming the first U.S. city to do so. Vehicles entering Manhattan’s central business district were charged $9 during peak times, with higher fees for trucks and buses. Initial reports indicated a 7.5% reduction in traffic and improved travel speeds.
CONGESTION PRICING & TOLLS
Other cities have introduced Congestion Pricing and Tolls to reduce congestion with Birmingham introducing the first major toll road in GB on the M6 when it opened on 9 December 2003.
Dublin’s Port Tunnel opened on 20th December 2006 for HGV’s only but was quickly expanded to all users on 28th January 2007. It allows drivers to pay to avoid the main congested city centre streets for a charge of €10 at peak times but this reduces to €3 at off peak times. It significantly cuts the journey time and allows for a reduction on the main flow as some drivers opt to pay the charge. As a stick to discourage car use other cities have implemented Parking Solutions reducing the available on-street parking to discourage driving into congested areas or increased costs and inareas replaced these with bus lanes.
In 2023, Cardiff Council invested £1 million to construct a new bus lane on Penhill Road in Pontcanna removing existing on-street parking to create the bus lane, aiming to improve bus journey times. However, the initiative faced criticism from residents concerned about increased traffic and reduced parking availability.Other cities with similar facilities include the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) RapidTO initiative.
US cities have created designated carpool lanes to incentivize shared rides in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes (HOV).
St Pancreas.
Simon Calder.
In Belfast we have a bus lane along the M1 which is a HOV and in Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, and Bradford car-sharing lanes, as an initiative of a broader effort to encourage carpooling and reduce urban congestion. These designated carpool lanes aim to incentivize shared rides, reduce the number of vehicles on the road, and improve overall traffic conditions in urban areas.
PARK & RIDE
In Belfast, the 1966 Travers Morgan Belfast Urban Motorway Plan advocated for park and ride, but it was only in 1995 that the first facility opened at Northside at the junction of the M2 & M3. Promotion of Carpooling and Ridesharing and use of park and ride facilities reduced the number of vehicles that arrive in city centres, but users here still must pay a relatively high bus fare compared to England’s £2 cap which is subsidised. Irrespective of the carrot or stick we need to raise awareness about the benefits of using public transport, cycling, and walking, as well as encouraging flexible working hours to reduce peak demand. By implementing a combination of these strategies, DFI can effectively manage traffic congestion and enhance the capacity of the road network for motorists in Belfast city centre. These “sticks” reflect a broader trend of reallocating road space from private vehicle parking to public transportation infrastructure, aiming to reduce congestion and encourage the use of more sustainable transport modes. If we want to avoid them it is beholding upon all of us to think about how we make our future journeys.
ROAD SAFETY MEASURES
Also, this month we have seen the biggest change in road safety to take place in Ireland in modern times. From 7th February the Irish
Road Authorities have implemented the first phase of changes in the Road Traffic Act 2024 to reduce speed limits on Irish Local Roads from 80km/h to 60km/h.
This follows a period of road safety reviews following the 180 fatalities that occurred on Irish Roads in 2023 representing a 36% increase on the previous year.
For Northern Ireland, the corresponding figure was 71 fatalities and 679 serious injuries. It is beholding on all of us to reduce this incident rate. From road safety there is an 80% chance of a pedestrian or cyclist surviving if struck at 30km/h and a 20% chance of a fatality. These figures reverse as speeds increase above 30km/h. At this stage I note that it is not cars that kill people but people themselves. We should only proceed along our routs with due care and attention when it is safe to do so.
An Garda Siochana will be enforcing the new speed limits and there will be a notable use of safety camera vans and average speed safety cameras to enforce this new legislation. These actions are taken to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our road network, and we should all take extra care when driving to try and achieve Irelands vision zero of no fatalities by 2050.
BELFAST HARBOUR STRATEGY
As a closing remark this month I must note my attendance at the launch of the Belfast Harbour Commissioners new Harbour Strategy 2025-29. Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chair of the Board, stated that by investing £313m within the plan period the Harbour will continue its pioneering efforts to diversify and decarbonise and in doing so will help reimagine and regenerate the city and advance regional prosperity.
The most recent investment has created jobs, strengthened supply chains, and raised sustainability standards. As part of the plan the Harbour will invest a further £90m in a deep water quay to accommodate the world’s largest cruise vessels.
The harbour proposes to drive strong growth our offshore wind and cruise tourism businesses. As well as investment in new port facilities such as cranes and designing and rebuilding Stormont Wharf the harbour will launch a new autonomous vehicle to assist in decarbonising its operations. The visionary plan sees the investment of £100m by 2029 to deliver 325 new homes and to have started the process of developing over 3,000 additional homes. The plan contains more targets and aspirations, and I look forward to discussing these in more detail as they develop.

NML Solutions was founded to meet the changing demands of the on-road load management sector, delivering extensive vehicle configurations alongside quick service and assistance - crucial focuses for today’s Transport Manager.
As the worldwide frontrunner in truck-mounted cranes and hook loaders, Hiab acknowledges NML Solutions’ sector knowledge and has consequently awarded the company exclusive permissions to import, supply, and support their offerings for the island of Ireland. The enterprise also fosters robust connections with essential body makers and has forged partnerships with some of the most notable clients in Ireland.
their competitiveness. They are dedicated to the enduring success of their clients.
Colm Browne has over 20 years experience in designing truck bodies and fitting cranes with Nugent Cochworks while Luke Carberry has over 40 years crane experience and co-founded Palfinger, Ireland. They are joined by Greg Thompson who managed the HIAB crane service function in Dennison Commercials and MAW Engineering and recently David Gibson came on board from SDC Trailers where he was the Internal Sales Manager. NML Solutions engineers machinery to boost the efficiency and output of their clients. While providing a premium product, the concentration is on establishing a total life cycle cost - from planning and getting on the road to upkeep - which enhances
Utilising their acumen in related fields, they saw that no company in Ireland was providing a fully tailored solution for transport managers, leading to the inception of NML Solutions. Their mission is to transform the client experience in the truck-mounted crane and loader sectors by delivering comprehensive design solutions, exceptional service, expedited time-to-market, and innovative designs. For a truck-mounted crane to function cohesively, three essential elements need to be merged: the chassis, the crane, and the truck body. Traditionally, this responsibility was placed on the Transport Manager, who is knowledgeable about trucks and chassis but might not possess the expertise to ascertain the suitable truck body or crane - or to choose the best option tailored to their specific needs.
cover story
Colm Browne, Sales Director at NML Solutions, states that they not only have proficiency in all these components but also a profound understanding of the pertinent regulations for each piece of machinery.
"We aren't merely selling a crane or a truck body - we provide a customised solution for the Transport Manager. We collaborate with the client to grasp their needs, pinpoint their challenges, and ascertain how we can alleviate their workload."
"The client indicates their preferred truck manufacturer, and we liaise with them to confirm the correct chassis is ordered.”
"The Transport Manager is making a substantial investment, so we define their needs and construct the ideal asset for them," Colm Browne elaborated.
"We assemble everything and synchronise the various components to ensure we deliver the final solution within the client’s desired timeline."
EFFICIENCY THROUGH QUALITY
The target audience for these truck-mounted cranes includes the waste and recycling industry, general building suppliers, and those engaged in transporting cabins, skips, and even forestry practices.
The team at NML Solutions draws from their experience at leading engineering firms MAW Engineering and the Nugent Group to this new enterprise, ensuring the highest standards of skill and craftsmanship in every new product developed by them.
NML Solutions engages in this manufacturing process from the outset and will communicate directly with the manufacturer to make certain that what is ordered is appropriate, considering weights, lengths, and power.
Located on a 45,000 square foot plot in Toomebridge, Co Antrim, NML Solutions operates from a newly constructed facility with accompanying offices and a training centre, where the company will educate clients on the proper and safe operation of their newly acquired equipment.
The Toome location additionally provides a LOAR testing facility, where the crane will undergo examination prior to being delivered to the client. These categories of cranes must also be evaluated routinely, which represents an extra service they can supply.
Truck-mounted cranes are required to be tested to full capacity (GA1) annually, followed by a braking assessment (to 125% of capacity) conducted every four years.
Awareness of such crucial regulations is yet another justification for collaborating with NML Solutions for your equipment.
With over fifty builds completed to date and forty cranes/hook loaders on order, NML Solutions is spearheaded by a management team with more than 150 years of cumulative industry experience. The firm is supported by a skilled team of full-time design and service engineers, parts specialists, and installers.
SERVICE CRANES
Recognising the deficit of crane service providers for all makes in Northern Ireland, the new business offers in-house expertise, a breakdown service, and 24-hour technical support.
Additionally, they have emergency service vans and service partners covering the island of Ireland that are perpetually on the move to deliver immediate aid and several

CLOSE BROTHERS COM MERCIAL FINANCE FUNDING SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR BUSINESS GOALS IN 2025
Recent research by Close Brothers reveals that while half of businesses anticipate expansion in the next year and 70% are planning to seek additional funding to support their growth, there is a significant gap in awareness of the finance options available. Just 50% of SMEs in Ireland report being familiar with asset finance or invoice finance options. Beyond traditional funding options, asset finance, invoice finance and asset based lending can be instrumental in helping SMEs to survive and thrive.
For businesses planning to increase production in 2025, asset finance offers a way to procure new equipment, vehicles or machinery and can be used for new or second-hand assets, or as a way to release value from the assets you already own. It can be achieved either through renting, with the option to return it at the end of the contract, or by buying it outright and spreading the cost over a fixed period.
Invoice finance provides a solution to inject working capital by releasing funds tied up in unpaid customer invoices. Those
with larger financial requirements could also benefit from an asset based lending facility, which combines invoice and asset finance to secure additional lending against property, plant, machinery or stock.
These tools often provide more flexibility than an overdraft or a loan, as they can be tailored to the exact business needs and ambitions.
Close Brothers Commercial Finance has also partnered with the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI) to provide a low-cost funding scheme to further support Irish SMEs and primary producers who are looking to invest in their growth and resilience, or climate action and environmental sustainability. The Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme can be used alongside asset finance, invoice finance, and asset-based lending solutions.
Managing Director, Close Brothers Commercial Finance Ciaran McAreavey said: “Our research has shown that over 95% of firms said they felt motivated to do business more sustainably but a third were deterred by potential costs. This scheme provides long term finance that is critical for SMEs progress and resilience whilst developing
their products and services, investing in energy efficiency and sustainability”.
The variety of funding solutions offered by Close Brothers Commercial Finance offers Irish SMEs the financial tools necessary to foster innovation, sustainability, and growth. With tailored options such as asset finance, invoice finance, and the SBCI Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme, businesses can confidently navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future, ensuring they remain resilient and competitive in an ever-evolving market.
*All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from a survey conducted December 2024. The Business Barometer survey canvassed the opinion of 900 SME owners and business managers from several industries across the UK and Ireland on a range of issues affecting their businesses.

10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SELL SURPLUS MACHINES AT AUCTION
When it comes to disposing of used plant and machinery, more and more operators, contractors and OEMs are turning to large plant auctions to sell off surplus machines and tradeins. Chris Osborne, Sales Manager at Euro Auctions, Europe’s biggest auction house for heavy earthmoving and construction equipment, explains the value of auctions and why vendors are choosing this disposal method over more traditional routes.
“We see more new vendors and buyers registering to buy or sell at Euro Auctions year on year. To put this into perspective, in 2024, over £50 million worth of machines went over the ramp at our Leeds site from new vendors who had never sold at auction before.
From mini diggers to 70-tonne excavators and everything in between, the perception of using an auction to dispose of tradeins and surplus machines has changed. Our customers are seeing the prices achieved, which speak for themselves. With more new vendors registering for each sale—not just in the UK, but also at our sites across Europe, the Middle East, Australia, the USA and Canada, the most common questions I get asked by new customers are as follows.”
WILL IT SELL TOO CHEAPLY?
Unreserved auctions shouldn’t be daunting? With a customer base and global reach as extensive as Euro Auctions there should be no fear of your equipment being sold too cheaply. Euro Auctions prices set the global market value. Goodquality machines always sell well, and an extensive selection at all our sales attracts serious global buyers. Thanks to our reach, we buy globally and sell locally at the sales where demand is highest.
Are auctions just for endof-life machines?
This outdated view no longer reflects today’s auction reality. Our auctions offer an extensive range of ‘work-ready’ and ‘rentready’ equipment at every sale. With fresh, low-hour machines
and many new and unused units available, buyers know they’ll find high-quality assets. Sellers benefit from this expanded buyer base, which includes large rental and contracting businesses. Fast turnarounds mean assets can be working the week after the sale.
CAN I GET BETTER PRICES FROM END USERS?
Now, more than ever before, we are seeing more end users buying from Euro Auctions. It is no longer just trade buyers at auction. Sellers working with Euro Auctions can tap into the end-user and retail market, not just in their own country but worldwide. Auctions are ideal for moving large volumes quickly, as a global buyer base ensures strong competition.
We handle the hassle of selling for you, making the process efficient and cost-effective.
WHAT WILL COMPETITORS THINK WHEN THEY SEE MY EQUIPMENT AT AUCTION?
Selling at auction is no longer a sign of distress. Today, successful rental companies, manufacturers, and contractors use auctions as a clean and fast way to convert assets into cash, make room for new stock and fund future investments.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SELLS WELL AND WHERE TO SELL IT?
The Euro Auctions territory managers can be an invaluable asset to you, speak to them early and discuss your fleet replacement needs. They can offer insights into seasonal trends, brands, and product demand. Our strategic guidance helps vendors maximise returns year-round.
WILL MY COMPETITORS BUY MY EQUIPMENT?
Typically, over 70% of items sold at the Leeds auction leave the UK. We can also move equipment to other sites, such as Germany, Spain, the Middle East and North America. Ultimately we can
advise where demand is higher and prices may be stronger. Transport costs are minimal and often outweighed by the higher hammer prices achieved.
WE SELL ALL OF OUR USED EQUIPMENT OURSELVES!
At times you may only have a small quantity of equipment to sell and have buyers lined up, however are you getting best value from them?
Selling to the trade can take up your time to advertise, negotiate and invoice a sale and still be under-selling that equipment. Sending to auction takes very little of your time and effort and gets thousands of bidders globally competing to buy your machines, not just your usual local dealer. Also as market cycles change you may have a larger quantity of equipment to sell at one time, this is where the strength of the auction really shows. You could sell 50 items in one day to 50 different people all for top prices and you’ve not had to advertise any of it and only had one point of contact at Euro Auctions. You can’t beat that for efficiency.
WE USUALLY TRADE OLD MACHINES AGAINST NEW, SO I DON’T NEED EURO AUCTIONS
We work with OEMs to underwrite trade-in packages, either purchasing them directly or enabling dealers to sell them at auction. Working directly with Euro Auctions ensures you remain in a strong negotiating position for new equipment purchases.
LEEDS IS TOO FAR AWAY—CAN I SELL FROM MY YARD?
While it’s always better to sell from an auction site, we offer flexible solutions, including ‘Timed Auctions’ as part of a live sale, our 24/7 Daily Marketplace, as well as Off-Site auctions for large volumes. Shipping machines to a live sale is not expensive and the prices achieved always outweigh the small cost of haulage. Buyers prefer to view equipment in person, but our digital inspection services are also available for buyers who can’t attend in person. The online bidding platforms enable participation from buyers worldwide, even if
they cannot attend in person. This digital accessibility expands your equipment’s exposure and attracts a broader range of bidders. Post-sale, we can arrange shipping for machines and equipment, regardless of the buyer’s location. This service adds convenience for both sellers and buyers, facilitating a smoother transaction process.”
CAN I SELL SOMETHING THAT IS STILL FINANCED?
Yes. Simply provide settlement figures and we’ll handle the rest. If the auction price exceeds the settlement, the funder will be paid from the proceeds. For shortfalls, additional unencumbered assets can be included in the package to cover balances, ensuring a smooth process.
Chris Osborne concludes:
“Auctions provide a swift and efficient method to convert assets into cash. Unlike private sales, which can be time-consuming, auction sales are conducted within a set timeframe, allowing for quicker financial returns.
“Unreserved auctions mean that all items are sold to the highest bidder at true market
value, without minimum price restrictions. Transparent bidding fosters a competitive environment, often driving prices higher and ensuring fair market value for your equipment.
“Selling through auctions can reduce the costs associated with traditional sales methods, such as advertising, storage and prolonged depreciation. This cost-effective sales process streamlines and minimises expenses, enhancing your net returns. The auction platform attracts not only dealers but also end users and rental companies seeking quality equipment.”
If you’re still in doubt, visit our Leeds auction site in the UK— the largest live auction site in Europe—and you’ll be impressed.
JCB FINANCE: HELPING YOU FINANCE JCB AND MORE
As the industry faces increasing demand with the governments strong focus on infrastructure and multiple projects being undertaken across the region, it is important that businesses have access to a finance partner that they can trust.
Using Asset Finance to fund plant, equipment and vehicles enables businesses to spread the cost of investment. This way of financing may also open up additional credit lines that may be independent from bank credit lines and is less likely to require additional security (other than the asset itself) compared to that typically required with a bank loan.
It is important that businesses find the best finance to fit their needs. Cathal Cullen, JCB Finance Regional Manager for Northern Ireland explains.
“We have been supporting businesses operating within construction and industry for a long time. Our team have a wealth of knowledge which is a real benefit when understanding the specific needs of our customers.
“I work closely with the team at Dennison JCB to ensure we find the right finance fit for customers, be that Hire Purchase or a leasing solution. When buying JCB, we really do offer a one-stop shop.”
JCB Finance not only provide asset finance for UK businesses on the full JCB range, new and used, but are also able to finance other
essential complementary plant, machinery, equipment, and commercial vehicles.
Cathal added: “We understand through over50 years in the industry, one size does not fit all. One common deciding factor is, do you want to own the machine at the end of the agreement?
“If the answer is yes, Hire Purchase (HP) could be the product for you. HP offers
accurate budgeting and the security of fixed repayments. We also have products that offer a payment holiday, giving businesses peace of mind if the unexpected happens.
“You can also claim the Annual Investment Allowance and Corporation Tax full expensing relief on qualifying assets placed on Hire Purchase just as if you had paid cash; enabling you to preserve working capital, choose payment terms to suit your business and save the tax –even if only the deposit has been paid.
“If ownership isn’t so important, and you’d like to benefit from lower payments due to value which remains unpaid by you, then leasing could suit your business. JCB Finance has a leasing facility for JCBs called JCB FlexiLease which gives customers the opportunity to earn from any profits achieved on disposal of the machine at the end of the lease –something that isn’t usually offered. Unlike HP which requires all VAT up front, VAT is payable with each instalment on a lease which can really help with cashflow too.”

“Doing business with JCB Finance is just seamless and very simple. The strong working relationship we have developed with JCB Finance stands us in good stead when it’s time to look into financing future machines.” – Hooper Plant Hire Ltd

“As we came to the end of 2024, we found ourselves reflecting on where we’d been, where we were – and how best we could use our unique strengths to the advantage of the automotive and commercial
UK POWER NETWORKS PARTNERS WITH FALCO CONSTRUCTION IN E-DIGGER ROLLOUT
UK Power Networks and groundworks contractor Falco Construction have collaborated to bring allelectric excavators to projects on the power network.
A duo of environmentallyfriendly Takeuchi TB20e fullyelectric mini excavators will be rolled out in a trial over the next two years, working on excavation work in London, the South East and the East.
Both UK Power Networks and Falco are working towards a greener and cleaner future, and this transition will help local communities as well as sustainability ambitions for both companies.
Upon a successful trial, Falco will invest over £6million in replacing their 120-strong dieselpowered fleet of excavators with fully electric Models. The environmental benefits could see more than 200tonnes of CO2e emissions removed from the atmosphere and
improve air quality in the areas where they work, if powered from renewable sources.
The removal of not just CO2e, but Nitrous Oxide (NOx) and other particulates (PM2.5) will greatly benefit operators and local communities’ air quality.
The e-diggers have also impressed operators with their power and endurance, while providing equivalent performance to their diesel counterparts.
The e-diggers’ batteries last up to five days before re-charging, and then they’re back to capacity within hours - reducing the need and cost for constant refuelling.
Katherine Jennings, continuous improvement manager at UK Power Networks, said: “We are incredibly proud of this trial and excited about the initial positive findings. e-diggers could ultimately be a huge enabler in UK Power Networks and Falco achieving their joint Net Zero commitments.
“We are passionate about partnering with our suppliers to drive continuous improvement in the sustainability sphere. This is critical, as meaningful change and a just transition can only come about through shared goals and joint initiatives.”
Alan Seyfi, support services director at Falco Construction, added: “The Takeuchi Model is the first electric miniexcavator we have seen that performs comparably with more traditionally-powered diggers.
We estimate that replacing our current 120-strong fleet with TB20e’s would directly remove over 200 tonnes of CO2e emissions each year and be a major step forward on our road to Net Zero.”
On top of the emission-based benefits, the excavators are 13 decibels quieter in comparison to diesel models during normal operations.
Mete Coban, London’s deputy mayor for environment and energy said: “The Mayor is
committed to reducing toxic air pollution and reaching his ambitious goal of netzero carbon by 2030.”
“We know that construction vehicles such as diggers contribute significantly to air pollution, which is why the Mayor has tightened standards across London. It’s great to see companies like UK Power Networks and Falco Construction leading the way and rolling out electric diggers.
“Technology like this will help to ensure Londoners, particularly those who live in the most deprived parts of London, can breathe cleaner air while also supporting our work to build a safer, greener London for everyone.”
Falco is a framework contractor for UK Power Networks providing groundworks to facilitate the repair and maintenance of assets across all of the company's three operating zones (London, South and East Anglia).

QRS MAKES SUCCESSFUL MOVE INTO TREE CARE SECTOR
In recent times County Tyrone based QRS has transformed itself from a company initially offering service and support to the quarrying and recycling industry to one that has taken on a broader role that includes dealerships for many leading equipment brands.
The company’s latest addition to its growing portfolio, as it moves into the tree care sector, is a range of wood chippers from 7” to 48” capacity from two of the world’s top manufacturers, Linddana TP and Europe Forestry – and how timely that move has been, given the need for such equipment in the aftermath of storms Darragh and Éowyn, which left a trail of fallen trees and telegraph poles across the country.
When QRS recently supported a two day tree shearing demonstration hosted
by Northern Lift Trucks, contractors were able to see the wood chippers in action, and those who did came away impressed with the equipment’s capabilities and performance.
Commented QRS Technical Director Davey Sproule: “We are currently following up enquiries resulting from the demo
days, and sales are beginning to come through, including one to Crosstrees Arboriculture, a tree service and arborist consulting company based in Armagh, who has been able to make good use of it in clearing up after the recent storms.”
Added Davey: “This is a new market for us, but it was a natural progression given that we were already supporting waste wood and biomass machines. We see great potential in the wood chipper ranges from both Linddana TP and Europe Forestry.”
For those not familiar with the brands, Linddana has successfully designed, manufactured and sold its well-known brand of TP wood chippers since 1980, and today the company is a market leader. The Danishowned company offers a strong selection of functional and reliable wood chippers for landscaping and biomass production.
USER FRIENDLY TP RANGE
TP wood chippers are well-known for their extreme user-friendliness, robust design and high efficiency. They are designed to meet the strictest safety standards, to be eco-friendly and economical on fuel. The rotary disc chippers come with a three year warranty that covers all of the components, including engine, hydraulics and gears.
The newest chipper in the range is the TP 176, faster, strong and more powerful than previous models. It is available in a number of variations, including the TP 176 mobile diesel and petrol, the only 7” sub 750 kg on the market to chip log diameter up to 176 mm. With a high capacity combined with low weight, it is ideal for various jobs. An electric powered, zero emissions version is also available, with a Lithium-ion battery pack that ensures approx. 3-5 hours of operation with mixed material. In fact, Linddana was the first company in the world to launch a mobile electric wood chipper in 2019. The TP 175 Mobil ZE is in demand by municipalities, rental companies and contractors looking for a green profile. Also popular in the range is the TP 215, again available in several versions including mobile which can process trunk diameters of up to 215 mm with the market’s most aggressive feed system. Chip size is hydraulically
adjusted using the feed speed. The heightadjustable ejector spout can be rotated 270°.
The TP 215 Track 8” is designed to operate in places it would not normally be possible to access with a wood chipper this size.
The 200 mm ground clearance means you can move it around in most places. The belt tracks are adjustable to various widths, depending on your needs and allow you to traverse slopes of up to 30°.
Also from Linddana is a range of TP PTO wood chippers for compact to large tractors, all with three year warranties. The smaller models are suitable for maintenance of the likes of parks, while the larger models are more suitable for forestry contractors.
TP 100 PTO, for example, is a compact and strong drum wood chipper with a high capacity and is particularly useful in confined spaces and when the tractor power is below 40 hp.
POWER & PERFORMANCE FOR TREE CARE PROFESSIONALS
product profile
The TP 200 PTO offers simple, flexible and efficient wood chipping of branches and trees up to 200 mm in diameter, an ideal choice for park and golf course maintenance and for municipal and agricultural grounds
DIVERSE EUROPE FORESTRY RANGE
Also now available from QRS is a range of wood chippers from Europe Forestry whose roots are deeply anchored in the agricultural and forestry world since year 1986 and has been involved in the supply and distribution of PTO disc chippers since year 1999.
From 2008 Europe Forestry introduced its own brand Europe Chippers, starting with model EC 1175 and followed by a full range from small to very large models. One of its newest models is the EC640, the most powerful 3500kg, 600x400, wheeled chipper with crane on the market and is currently available on demonstration from QRS.
Others in the range include the DC 385 Professional Disc Chipper, famous for its high quality uniform size wood chips. Sharp knives give the lowest needed horse power, while the easy to transport fuel efficient EC 640 features a galvanized tandem chassis, push brakes, 200 hp engine, and a crane, with a total weight 3500 kg.
up to 100 m3/h. It is available in both diesel and electric powered versions.
Europe Forestry’s EC 850 is highly economical, with its perfect combination of compact design and maximum capacity
Meanwhile, the EC 1060 has become Europe Forestry’s best selling Europe chipper with a 456 hp Cat or 550 hp Deutz/Liebherr engine. This chipper does up to 120-150 m3/h.

Kilsaran Investment in Jonsson Crushers Boosts Irish Quarry Operations
In the Irish market, products within the McHale Plant Sales portfolio include those manufactured by Metso-owned Jonsson Crushers whose range consists of tracked jaw units, tracked cone units, wheeled cone crusher units and an electric-powered tracked double crusher. Swedish-made, Jonsson Crushers are manufactured to meet the needs of those whose requirement is for a tracked machine that can be ‘bespoke’ made and specified to operate in a large quarry scenario such as those within the chain of concrete products and aggregates producer Kilsaran.
Comparable in significance to their recently reported sales to Mayo-based civil works contractor Wills Brothers and CRH member company Roadstone, Metso distributor McHale Plant Sales reports upon what they term ‘another
significant investment’ by Kilsaran, reflected in their acquisition of three Jonsson crushers – two L130 model jaw crushers and one L550 model cone crusher.
Robust, with a production capacity of up to 750 tonnes
per hour, the three units were acquired for operation at Kilsaran’s Gallstown and Ballinascorney quarries in Meath and Dublin and were added to some existing units already owned by Kilsaran.
Now part of the Metso family –whose crushers McHale Plant Sales has distributed in Ireland since 2015 and in the UK since April 2023 – Jonsson Crushers describes itself as ‘one of the market’s largest manufacturers of mobile products in stone crushing’ whose equipment was welcomed by McHale on appointment as ‘bespoke’ units that will ‘add immeasurably’ to its position within the aggregates and crushing markets.

LIEBHERR UPGRADES K SERIES OF FASTERECTING CRANES
Liebherr has upgraded its established K series of fast-erecting cranes, making the machines future-ready. Intelligent assistance systems for bottom-slewing cranes are no longer a distant promise; they are now available for all current K series cranes.
K series cranes have been in action on construction sites around the world for years. They are continually improved further and adapted to the changing requirements of construction sites. The latest cranes in the series, the 43 K, 61 K and 91 K, are available now as well as the new version of the 125 K.
As part of the facelift given to the successful K cranes, the machines can now be ordered with Liebherr’s five intelligent assistance systems. Smart functions such as sway-free load lifting without diagonal pull increase safety for people and sensitive components, while semiautomated lifts maximise ease of use. Already established features, such as variable hook heights and manoeuvrability in tight spaces, continue to be part of the new series along with the familiar functions Speed2Lift, Load-Plus and Micromove for
maximum lifting speeds, increased jib head lifting capacity and precise positioning of loads. The crane names now reflect the lifting capacities according to Load-Plus.
NEW CONTROL AND OPERATING SYSTEMS
All new K cranes are equipped with the new Liebherr Control 5 crane control system. This consists of the control system, the Liebherr Display 5 and I/O modules. The robust and durable control system is already installed in the current L series of fast-erecting cranes and is used in a variety of construction machines within the Liebherr Group.
The facelift also sees the K cranes equipped with the new Tower Crane Operating System 2 (TC OS 2). It features standardised and intuitive menu navigation, with self-explanatory symbols and icons. A standardised radio control for all cranes in the current K and L series is another new addition.
CRANES IN THE CURRENT SERIES
The 43 K, the smallest crane in the series, has eleven hook heights to adapt flexibly to construction site requirements. It achieves a maximum hook height of 30.2
metres and a radius of up to 35 metres.
The 43 K follows on from the 34 K.
The 61 K is successor to the 53 K. It reaches a hook height of up to 33.4 metres and a maximum radius of 43 metres. Another new feature is a luffed position of up to 30°, which offers greater flexibility on site.
The 91 K brings with it all the proven operational possibilities of the K series and can be used for the construction of multioccupancy buildings as well as industrial projects. It follows on from the successful 81 K.1 and makes the well-established bottomslewing crane fit for future challenges.
The 125 K, which is the largest crane in the series, combines the performance of a top-slewing crane with the mobility and flexibility of a fast-erecting crane. The machine’s performance data has remained the same: it achieves a maximum hook height of 41.5 metres, a radius of up to 55 metres and can lift 8,000 kilograms.

LIEBHERR PROMOTES SOLUTIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION SITES OF THE FUTURE
Liebherr will be displaying more than 70 future-focused exhibits from the product segments of earthmoving machinery, material handling technology, mining, mobile and crawler cranes, tower cranes, deep foundation machines, concrete technology and components. The ‘Hands on the future’ motto encapsulates the way the group is tackling tomorrow’s challenges today and working hand-in-hand with its customers to devise solutions, proving themselves as a dependable partner.
A whole host of new products await visitors – many of them machines and innovations that Liebherr is unveiling to the public for the very first time, including the world premiere of the T 38-7s – the new generation 6 of the telescopic handler - setting new benchmarks in the segment up to 4.2 tonnes. Plus, Liebherr marks its entry into the 8-metre class with the new T 48-8s, a strategic addition to its portfolio in the industry segment. Visitors to Liebherr can also look forward to world exclusives from the product segments of mobile and crawler excavators, mobile and crawler cranes, deep foundation machines and material handling machines. In the outdoor area, Liebherr’s concrete technology product segment is providing a first look at its new construction series Mobilmix. The largest variant with a 4 m³ twin-shaft mixer will have its premiere at Bauma. This modular construction system gives customers more freedom in plant configuration, as well as shorter delivery times, faster assembly and high parts availability. Improvements in drive technology cut energy consumption by up to 30 % and also increase the weighing accuracy, allowing for a saving of up to 8 kg cement for every cubic metre of concrete. The central focus of the group’s forwardlooking technologies can be found in the Innovation Lab in the outdoor area. Here, visitors have the chance to try out pioneering technological concepts first-hand, whether on-screen or through interactive installations spanning numerous product segments.
Inside the Innovation Lab, Liebherr is showcasing, for instance, the development and implementation of object identification by machines fitted with the necessary camera systems and sensors. These are the
prerequisites to make advanced assistance systems, autonomous machine operations and predictive maintenance a real possibility.
DIGITALISATION
In its role as technology partner, Liebherr presents efficient yet environmentally responsible products and solutions from the fields of digitalisation and drive technology, some of which are already in operation today.
‘Digitalisation is one of the most significant areas of activity of our time. Though it may often seem abstract and technologyoriented, it is in fact always centred around people and real added value. Our goal is to establish practical benefits that extend beyond value chains. That’s why we design machines and solutions in ways that best fulfil the needs of our customers and partners in the long term,’ says Marcel Flir, Head of Digital Business and Strategy at Liebherr.
MACHINE AUTONOMY
Liebherr views digitalisation as an ongoing and forward-looking process that the company will continue to drive forward in the coming years. In future, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, for instance, will be integrated more heavily into machines and work processes. They will also forge ahead with the expansion of the cloud infrastructure to process the growing volumes of data efficiently and to facilitate new data-powered business models.
At Bauma, there will be a particular focus on the aspects of intelligent machine controls, assistance systems and (semi-)autonomous processes, especially since they improve the communication between man and machine as well as between machine and machine. This, in turn, benefits customers, for instance by reducing the machine’s energy consumption and its downtime – while also placing another spotlight on a key aspect for Liebherr: customer focus and, ultimately, the fulfilment of customer requirements.
For the tower crane product segment, the exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to see the K series fast-erecting crane with its improved performance level, modern controls and new operating system. The four cranes feature new, intelligent Liebherr operatorassistance systems. Smart functions, such as swing-free lifting of the load without the use of a diagonal pull, increase safety for those on site and reduce the likelihood of damage to delicate components.
Liebherr is also running a live demonstration of an autonomous working wheel loader in the outdoor area. The basis for this is the in-house developed autonomous driving system called ‘Liebherr Autonomous Operations’, which is being presented to the wider public for the first time. The autonomous solution, which is at an advanced stage of development, facilitates completely driverless operation.
STRONG AND INNOVATIVE SHOWING FROM HYUNDAI
The Innovation Park indoor zone on the HD Hyundai stand at this year’s Bauma construction equipment fair will demonstrate a range of technological advances. This will include a remote-controlled wheel loader, 2D/3D digging simulators, a Head-Up Display (HUD) simulator and an excavator counterweight design that promises multiple safety features.
The manufacturer will demonstrate how technology can play an increasing role in machinery control and operative safety over the coming years. Central to the Innovation Park display, visitors to the stand will see an HL955A wheel loader being operated remotely. While the control system will be at the fair ground in Munich, the full-size shovel will be operating, without guidance or external assistance, at Hyundai’s European head office site in Tessenderlo, Belgium. The remote-control system incorporates advanced features to provide a heightened sense of the job site, despite being some 700km apart. Information such as the front distance, bucket angle and bucket height, will be displayed on the control screen, allowing operators to access working data at the
controls. The system also plays surrounding sounds through its speakers, making the operator aware of the site conditions.
There is an emergency stop button on the remote-control unit in case of emergencies.
The system also incorporates a tipping prevention feature, using a tilt angle sensor on the loader to prevent tipping when the loader arms are being raised. The loader will also be equipped with AAVM+, the latest version of HD Hyundai’s Advanced Around View Monitoring system, that uses a radar to
detect obstacles in the loader’s predicted path when reversing.
CONTROL SIMULATION
Visitors to the stand will be able to experience both 2D and 3D machine guidance and control, through an excavator simulator within the Innovation Park. The system is available to work with all A-Series excavators. Also on show will be a wheel loader cab of the future, with an Advanced Head-up Display (HUD). Critical machine data, such as speed, temperatures and pressures are often located on screens below the windscreen
or to one side of the cab, out of the operator’s main line of sight. With a HUD, essential operating information can be projected onto the front windscreen, allowing the operator to access that data while concentrating on the task. The Advanced HUD uses Samsung NEO QLED technology to provide clear visibility inside the cab, regardless of changing light conditions or operator viewing angle.
COUNTERWEIGHT DESIGN
Hyundai’s next generation excavator counterweight will feature three safety features that visitors to the stand can see in action. This includes a Radar Object Detection Warning System, an E-Stop emergency stop function and the Safety-Sight worker recognition warning. The Radar Object Detection Warning System incorporates three wide-angle radars, mounted on the left, right and rear of the excavator. These are capable of detecting people and objects around the machine.
Operators can turn each radar off independently if required, when purposefully working close to an obstruction, and detection ranges can be adjusted to suit the site conditions.
The E-Stop (Emergency Stop) function is an active safety system that controls deceleration and stopping, depending on the distance of detected objects when the excavator is slewing or travelling. When an object is detected in the warning zone, the system slows the machine and initiates a stop if required, notifying the operator in advance. This feature will be integrated into SAVM and radar object detection technologies to prevent incidents occurring on site.
Safety-Sight is a warning system for operatives outside the machine. It provides visual and audible warnings if an object or a worker comes dangerously close to the machine, allowing site workers
to react and to move away from the area of potential danger.
HYDROGEN FUEL POWERED
Hyundai Construction Equipment will also have its HW155H hydrogen fuel cellpowered wheeled excavator concept working on the demonstration area.
The pre-production machine, which was first seen as a static exhibit at the last Bauma in 2022, will demonstrate to customers how hydrogen could contribute to future carbonfree operation on construction sites across Europe.
A hydrogen fuel cell uses a chemical reaction between hydrogen that is carried on board and oxygen in the
atmosphere, to generate electricity, with the only emission being water vapour. The fuel cell delivers power on demand to drive the machine, either though electric motors, or via electricallydriven hydraulic pumps.
The project to develop a fuel cell for the HW155H has been a cooperation between Hyundai Construction Equipment and Hyundai Motor Company, which has a range of powertrain solutions available in the passenger car and utility vehicle markets. Two cells have been designed, creating 30kW and 50kW of power, with the HW155H using a combination of fuel cells to provide 70-100kW of power. These fuel cells would suit a range of machines, including the 15-tonne wheeled
excavator, fork lift trucks and emergency generators.
The HW155H is a 15-tonne wheeled excavator that combines on and off-road capabilities, making it an ideal choice for hydrogen power.
The machine uses the fuel cell to power an electric motor, that then drives the hydraulic system. The hydrogen storage on-board has the capacity to allow a full eight hours of operation, with refuelling taking between 10-20 minutes.
The HW155H will meet the needs of a wide range of construction customers, delivering an operating speed and power similar to that of a conventional diesel-powered excavator., with all-day useability.

PERFORMANCE
It’s not just the capacity (an increase in lifting capacity of 1,000 KG per model) and upgraded lift heights, but the entire load chart of machine has been enhanced. A significant number of new and improved components feature in the new design. At the heart of these new models can be found a new chassis facilitating the increases in capacity and output. A maximum travel speed of 40 km/h (where permitted or approved) ensures no one gets to the site quicker than Merlo.
NEW RENTAL SPECIFICATION MODEL
To meet the demands of the rapidly growing rental market, Merlo is pleased to introduce the “R” rental models. Offering the same power, performance and
reliability as the S Plus models these new R models offer simplified management and operation. Perfect for sites where multiple operators are present.
ELECTRONIC FUNCTIONS
With a focus on the electronic functions of the new range, Merlo has made many improvements to enhance the operator experience. Improvements to the already impressive Boom Speed have allowed for an even smoother and more linear operation. Further enhancing the functionality is the introduction of a “Set Point” function allowing the automatic return of the boom to memorised position at maximum speed whilst maintaining a safe operation. This feature reduces operator fatigue and increases efficiency in repetitive work cycles.
Thanks to the introduction of a new Cartesian movement function that maintains automatically the vertical trajectory of the attachment when raising or lowering or a horizontal trajectory during extension or retraction of the boom.
Additionally, the introduction of load chart simulation function allows the operator to know before commencing the operation as to whether it is feasible or not, simply by simulating the variation of the known parameters (attachment used, load to be lifted, stabiliser position etc).
The ability to re-position the machine (max. speed 5 km/h) allows the re-positioning of the unit via the radio remote control thanks to the ability to control the machines movements and stabilisation phases from a safe distance or from the attached platform, thus optimising work time and increasing efficiency.
REMOTE CONTROL
A new patented design of the Merlo radio remote control offers increased ergonomics for the operator, a greater range of machine information enabling total control of the machine. This means the operator has total control of the machine, allowing for anticipation of abnormal or dangerous situations, enhancing safe operation and performance.
If such a situation is encountered the LCD display screen background will change colour to alert the operator, in turn facilitating only safe movements to return the machine to a stable and safe situation, a unique feature exclusive to Merlo.

NEW HOLLAND WINS GOOD DESIGN AWARD FOR ADVANCED ELECTRIC COMPACT WHEEL LOADER
The W40X Electric Power, New Holland’s new compact wheel loader, has won a GOOD DESIGN® award, one of the world’s most significant design prizes, acknowledging the role played by styling in complementing the practical aspects of machine engineering.
Aimed at users operating in indoor or urban areas, the W40X Electric Power, which is just 1,650mm wide, produces zero emissions and low noise levels from an all-electric drive system powered by a 23kWh battery that is supported by a three-year warranty. This provides 39kW rated power, with a 3-6 hour work time depending on application.
To match its advanced propulsion technology, the W40X Electric Power was styled in a special edition created exclusively for
Agritechnica 2023 by CNH’s Industrial design team. Coloured in the ‘Clean Blue’ that characterizes all New Holland electric products, the styling incorporates the iconic New Holland leaf symbol on the rear hood. Imitating the loader bucket shape, an interlocking geometric triangular motif is carried through the length of the machine from the engine hood at the rear to the see-through driver’s door glass and on to the loader boom, unifying the machine’s design language.
Total operating weight is 3.9t and bucket payload 1.0t with a standard 0.5m3 bucket size. An innovative attachment linkage has been designed specifically for battery electric vehicles, offering the same strength and durability as a standard design, but with reduced weight and a 5% advantage in
required working energy. Automated functions, including return-to-dig, return-to-travel and return-to-height, ease boom and bucket control for the operator. Electro-proportional controls can be independently customized to suit job type and preference, and load-sensing hydraulics permit precise simultaneous movement for full safety and efficiency.
“This GOOD DESIGN award is a great recognition of our design team’s role in producing the W40X Electric Power styling that matches the innovation within the machine,” says David Wilkie, CNH Head of Industrial Design.
“This is a machine that required a striking style to show it offers something different within, and we’re delighted this was recognised by the GOOD DESIGN judges.”

HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
WORKPLACE HEALTH CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION
“Your health is your wealth” is a common remark, but what about your health in your place of work? Some people may have a poor prognosis of their health, due to the environment they work in. This is in stark contrast to safety related workplace deaths.
Hundreds of people die in Northern Ireland every year due to previous exposure at work, primarily to chemicals or dust, and thousands more people’s quality of life severely restricted due to work-related health issues.
Continual exposure to chemicals, dusts and asbestos can lead to different types of cancer, including other conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This is not a problem of the past, it is a present-day problem. Effective controls must be put in place to reduce the risk, otherwise the problem continues to persist and claim its unacceptable toll.
Martin Rafferty, a Principal Inspector with the Occupational Health and Hygiene Team within the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) explained that “People shout about ‘Safety’ but tend to whisper about ‘Health.’ This must change. same priority and focus they would to safety. Poor management of health risks in the workplace ruins and costs lives. Workplace ill health is preventative.
“No one in Northern Ireland should develop ill health simply because of a job choice.”
Martin continued, “Thankfully not everyone whose health has been affected by their work will result in a death. Other conditions such as noise induced hearing loss, hand arm vibration syndrome, Musculoskeletal injuries, and Asthma, to name but a few, affect thousands of people on a daily basis resulting in them being unable to work and live a normal life. What many do not realise is that every workplace has health risks. These risks need to be managed and adequately controlled.”
The cost of workplace ill health to the Northern Ireland economy runs into the hundreds of millions of pounds each year, putting additional pressure on the NHS as well as that of local businesses, due to compensation claims and downtime due to absenteeism.

recycling & waste management
Keenan becomes UK’s first waste company to have carbon emissions verified by BSI
Keenan Recycling, a leading provider of sustainable waste management solutions, has revealed its baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory has been formally verified against the internationally recognised ISO 14064-1 standard by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
This achievement marks Keenan Recycling, the largest food waste collection company in the UK, as the country’s first waste recycling company to have carbon emissions verified by BSI.
The ISO 14064-1 verification by an accredited provider (BSI) validates Keenan Recycling’s robust and transparent approach to measuring and reporting its carbon emissions. This independently verified inventory establishes a reliable baseline against which the company’s Net Zero plan is built, providing a solid foundation for future emissions reduction efforts.
“Our carbon inventory provides the foundation for our carbon reduction planning,” said Fergus Healy, Head of Strategic Development & Net Zero at Keenan Recycling. “Having it verified against ISO 14064-1 by BSI is a significant step in ensuring our emissions reporting meets internationally recognised
standards. This achievement further sets us apart in the industry and underlines our commitment to meet our SBTi targets through credible, sciencebacked sustainability initiatives.”
ISO 14064-1 is a globally recognised standard that provides a framework for organisations to quantify, monitor, and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This verification validates Keenan Recycling’s robust approach
to measuring and managing its greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and Net Zero leadership in the waste sector.
Notes to editors
Keenan Recycling, the largest food waste collection company in the UK, collects food waste from every postcode in Wales, Scotland, and England on its own fleet. Food waste is
collected from businesses and is then transformed into either compost, renewable electricity, gas, heat, or fuel.
Its ever-growing fleet of specialised food waste collection vehicles including hydrogen, biomethane and HVO, operate across 24 depots, offering private and public sector clients an opportunity to segregate food waste, lower their carbon footprint, and improve their green credentials.
Infrastructure Minister visits Recon Waste Initiatives in Portadown
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd recently visited ReCon Waste Management Ltd in Portadown to find out how the company finds recycling and recovery solutions for materials that would have previously been viewed as waste and traditionally sent to landfill.
The Minister was given a tour of the facility by Technical Director Mark Hamill and heard about new initiatives being advanced by the company, including the sustainable use of excavated sub soils for re-instatement in utilities and infrastructure projects.
Minister O’Dowd said: “We need to reduce both the amount of the new material extracted from the ground and the amount of material we send to landfill and the recycling and reuse of materials is essential to help address climate change and to promoting a circular economy.
“It was fascinating to hear from ReCon about how everyday items which we often just throw away, can be recycled and reintroduced for use across many different sectors including the construction industry.
“This is a good example of the circular economy working in practice and I look forward to seeing how innovative waste management develops materials that could be used in infrastructure projects.”

NOOTEBOOM INTRODUCES NEW GENERATION MEGA WINDMILL TRAILER
Nooteboom has unveiled details of its new generation Mega Windmill Trailer which thanks to its extensive adjustability is capable of transporting larger tower sections than before. Additionally, tower sections with smaller diameters and turbine nacelles, for instance, can also be transported effortlessly, making the new MWT-XXL highly versatile.
The size of wind turbine components continues to grow. While the MWT-XL could already handle larger tower segments (with an inner diameter up to approximately 5700mm) than the original MWT, the third-generation MWT-XXL can transport an even wider range of tower segments (with an inner diameter of approximately 2850mm to 6100mm) without needing adjustments to the mounting frame.
This is achieved through a double, hydraulically height-adjustable A-frame. The load is clamped using a unique three-point system, ensuring the Nooteboom MWT-XXL maintains the easiest operation and shortest loading and unloading times on the market. The load capacity is approximately 100 tonnes and the empty trailer remains well below 4 meters in height.
PROVEN STABILITY
As wind turbine components become larger, the height of the centre of gravity also increases,
requiring additional trailer stability for safe transport. In addition to standard theoretical calculations, Nooteboom conducted impressive stability tests at the RDW test track in Lelystad, examining the differences in road behaviour between air suspension and hydraulic suspension. These tests revealed that the new 2.84m wide Nooteboom selfsteered dolly with air suspension
THE LOAD CAPACITY IS APPROXIMATELY 100 TONNES AND THE EMPTY TRAILER REMAINS WELL BELOW 4 METERS IN HEIGHT.
is at least as stable as a comparable trailer with hydraulic suspension and pendulum axles. Moreover, with air suspension, the driver receives a visible warning in advance as the vehicle starts to lean over. The driver will intuitively reduce speed after which the danger is over. In case of a self-steered dolly with hydraulic suspension and pendulum axles, the driver does not get this advance warning and therefore cannot intervene in time.
Nooteboom chooses air suspension for its advantages. Thanks to air suspension, the new MWT-XXL features the easiest operation, low maintenance costs, and a low dead weight. This ensures that the total weight of the loaded combination generally remains below 150 tons. Additionally, when an air-suspended axle compresses fully due to large road irregularities, pressure remains in the suspension system, allowing other axles to continue bearing the load. In such situations with hydraulic suspension, the pressure in the suspension system is lost and the compressed axle is much more overloaded. Lastly, air suspension is more environmentally friendly, simply because the vehicle uses less hydraulic oil.
ADJUSTABLE HOOKS
A new option on the Nooteboom MWTXXL is adjustable hooks that clamp the tower at the base. These hooks are easily adjustable, enabling the safe loading and transport of tower sections with flanges that are thicker, thinner, or significantly different in shape without additional tools.
This makes the new generation of MWTs even more universal, allowing the most diverse wind turbine components to be transported effortlessly with the new Nooteboom MWT-XXL.
PROVEN SUCCESS SINCE 2003
In 2003, Nooteboom launched its innovative and patented Mega Windmill Trailer, the first of its kind in the market. This successful trailer was later updated as the MWT-XL.
After 20 years, the Nooteboom MWT remains the leading transport solution in the wind energy sector worldwide. However, the wind industry now demands greater flexibility, prompting Nooteboom to introduce the Mega Windmill Trailer XXL, designed for multifunctional use. All trailers in the Mega Windmill family are specially designed to transport large
wind turbine tower sections weighing up to approximately 100 tons without a loading floor and without requiring cranes for loading and unloading.
The latest MWT-XXL comes standard with a 2.84m wide self-steered dolly, but Nooteboom can also supply the MWT for smaller diameters with a 2.55m wide selfsteered dolly. This narrower dolly takes up less road space and remains under the legally permissible vehicle width when empty, which is advantageous for obtaining permits in several European countries.
NEW GENERATION VOLVO EC500 TAKES ON TOUGH DEMOLITION CHALLENGE
A new generation EC500 crawler excavator from Volvo CE – and the first of its kind in the UK - is showcasing its formidable might on a huge and demanding demolition project to transform the site of a former aluminium plant for future development.
The challenge of removing an estimated 90,000m³ of heavily reinforced concrete and preparing the ground at a 200-hectare site on the outskirts of Holyhead in Wales called for a serious heavyweight. The solution? The new generation Volvo EC500 – and this powerhouse is more than proving it is up to the task.
The first new generation EC500 in the UK is owned by Rock Remediation, part of Rock Civil Engineering. A family-owned civil engineering, construction and plant hire company led by Connor Kane, it specialises in large-scale civil projects across the UK including remediation of contaminated land, soil stabilization, and groundworks.
Following the demolition and clearing of the buildings and 140-metre-high chimney at the former production plant, a plateau of concrete was all that was left.
Experienced operator, Paul Faulkner, from Rock Civil Engineering, explains: “Concrete and rebar couldn’t have cost that much in the late 1960s! We have encountered some heavily reinforced material on this job, and while our smaller machines could just about handle them,
Connor wanted to expand our fleet to allow us to manage this, and future projects more easily.”
With an operating weight of just over 53 tons, the new generation EC500 is immediately winning fans. Paul says it is simply amazing in terms of power and comfort. “The improvements to the cab are brilliant. There’s so much room in there, the seat is excellent, and everything just seems to feel right and be in the right place.”
UPDATED CAB
A key part of the new design included a revamp to make the machine more spacious and ergonomic than ever before. The updated cab includes a heated/ cooled seat with plenty of space to allow any operator to find their perfect seating position. The heating and ventilation system has also been improved, as have the media upgrades, which now include both wired and wireless charging options and a Bluetooth speaker. New advanced electric control joysticks and fully electric travel pedals are highly responsive and have additional switches and rollers allowing a variety of functions to be performed without the operator’s hands having to let them go.
The right-hand side of the cab is dominated by the new Volvo Co-Pilot 12.8” display with full HD resolution. Volvo Co-Pilot is a state-of-the-art touchscreen tablet that powers all Volvo Assist platforms, using on-board machine data and high-precision
sensors to enable tasks to be completed efficiently and easily.
Simple and intuitive, operators can set up projects in just a few touches by selecting the required job parameters. They can then monitor the job’s progress and stay safe, with on-screen alerts that indicate when pre-set parameters are met. Volvo Co-Pilot is 3G compatible when equipped with a SIM card, allowing software updates to be received automatically and wirelessly. The new generation EC500 is also equipped with Volvo Smart View with Obstacle Classification. This gives operators a 360° view of the machine’s surroundings thanks to the camera and new radar system. The technology can identify obstacles as either an object or human, alerting the operator so they can take appropriate action. It is also fitted with Volvo Dig Assist which provides built-in machine guidance and control technology. While not required for the bulk of the concrete removal, it will be a beneficial tool for Rock Civil Engineering when the final earthworks side of the project kicks off. The addition of On-Board Weighing on the excavator provides realtime insights into the bucket’s load, helping to eliminate overloading, underloading, reweighing and waiting times.

WEIGHTY JOB NEEDS POWERFUL MACHINE
The first job for the excavator was the removal of column bases along the perimeter of the former aluminium storage shed.
Measuring 3 metres by 3 metres and around 1 metre in depth, the blocks were loosened using the ripper attachment, before being carefully lifted out and placed on the slab ready for breaking.
“The weighing system shows each block is around the 12-tonne mark, with one or two closing in on 15-tonnes,” Paul said. “They
The EC500 has a 423hp, 13-liter D13j engine which pushes out maximum torque levels of 2070Nm at just 1300rpm. This combination of high torque at low engine rpm provides a quiet and fuel-efficient machine, which Paul believes delivers unbeatable performance in the weight range. The engine powers a new electro-hydraulic system with an enhanced main control value. This intelligent technology uses electric sensors to monitor the operator’s movements and send signals to the machine’s onboard
and sends commands to the main control valve. The result is smooth and precise movement of the excavator’s boom, bucket and other hydraulic functions, allowing for more accurate digging and loading.
Rock Remediation’s EC500 has been supplied with a 7-metre boom and 2.55-metre stick and carries a full suite of additional hydraulic services. A Miller GTX quick hitch has been fitted to allow the excavator to swap between bucket and ripper. The standard excavation bucket has been supplemented with a heavy-duty bucket and ripper supplied by Strickland.
Connor Kane, Head of Rock Civil Engineering said: “We’ve had excellent service from SMT on our existing fleet, and we hope this continues with the new machine. We like the power and productivity the machines provide, along with their fuel efficiency and high operator acceptance. If the EC500 carries on in this vein, we’ll be more than happy to continue our relationship with the manufacturer.
