SHOW TIME

As we roll towards summer, it’s time to get the hoses out.

Not to water the garden, but rather to clean our trucks, vans and trailers, as this is the season of shows and you want your vehicles looking their best.

These trade shows are a chance for manufacturers, hauliers, and every other company and business associated with the transport and logistics industry to show off their latest innovations in front of their peers.

It’s only a few weeks ago that the NEC in Birmingham hosted the annual Commercial Vehicle (CV) Show, and at the start of June all roads lead to Stoneleigh in Warwickshire for the huge Road Transport Expo, or RTX 2024.

A leading figure in the trucking industry commented recently that more has happened in the past three than the previous 27 of his 30 year career in the industry. And this will certainly be borne out when you see the innovations, and new products that will be on display at shows this year, starting with CV and now moving on to RTX.

This industry is at a turning point. It realizes the future of transportation has to be green, and by and large all the players in the industry are embracing this. So at RTX , and all the shows in 2024 and beyond expect a lot of battery/electric vehicles, more ways to use sustainable fuel and telematics systems and companies providing the IT to assist logistics firms operate their fleets in a more efficient, economic and sustainable way.

No one in the business is brave enough to announce that they have found the magic ‘silver bullet’ that will sort all our environmental problems.

Nor does anyone believe they have the pathway to the future of transport mapped out exactly and precisely.

What we have currently is all manufacturers spending huge amounts of time, money and expertise developing a range of solutions to bridge the gap from an industry solely reliant on diesel, to one that will, eventually, be low carbon - or potentially fossil free.

So, when you are attending the shows this year, open your mind to ‘the road ahead’, and dismiss nothing until you at least find out more about how to be greener – and cleaner.

DAF introduces PACCAR Connect

With its wide range of information and industry-leading ease of use, the new PACCAR Connect sets the benchmark for online fleet management platforms. PACCAR Connect is easily accessible and allows very simple integration with existing third-party software. Every new DAF XB, XD, XF, XG and XG+ is supplied as standard in combination with no less than 10 years of PACCAR Connect.

PACCAR Connect consists of a number of components: hardware and software in the truck, a detachable tablet (optional) in the cab and an online portal that can be accessed on almost any fixed or mobile device. PACCAR Connect can provide real-time information anytime, anywhere on the performance of individual vehicles and the entire fleet, logistical processes and the performance of drivers, thereby helping operators to optimise their returns.

Seamless integration

One of the major benefits of PACCAR Connect is that existing logistical applications from so-called ‘third parties’ can use data from the online portal. This makes it easier to monitor logistical processes and the performance of a fleet from a computer, laptop or even a tablet.

The PACCAR Connect Tablet also helps make the work of the driver easier and more efficient,

as it can connect the mobile services of PACCAR Connect to the DAF navigation system. This means that new routes drawn up by the operator’s home base can be sent directly to the DAF Truck Navigation system.

Reports

PACCAR Connect makes it possible to view all truck and fleet performances 24/7 online or to send them via e-mail through

the ‘Report Scheduler’ at any given moment. The route and fuel reports can be displayed on the dashboard according to individual preferences. With a view to achieving maximum efficiency, PACCAR Connect also makes use of ‘geofencing’, which notifies the home base whenever a truck is nearing a delivery location or is fully operational again after undergoing maintenance at a dealer.

Fleet owners who require more comprehensive information can choose the optional Eco Score and Vehicle Health modules. The former provides detailed information on the driver’s performance, while the latter focuses on the condition of the vehicle – including realtime dashboard signals and an indication of when the vehicle will require its next service.

10 years as standard

Each new DAF XB, XD, XF, XG and XG+ is linked as standard for ten years to PACCAR Connect, even if the vehicle changes owners. During this period, all updates of the portal are carried out free of charge using the most up-to-date software. Users of DAF Connect will be offered a software update, at no extra cost, to the new and more extensive PACCAR Connect.

The new norm

The PACCAR Connect online fleet management platform – standard with each new DAF – represents the new norm in ease of use. With its seamless integration of the logistical applications of third parties and the optional PACCAR Connect Tablet, the monitoring and optimising of logistical processes has become easier and, most importantly, better than ever before.

Young drivers can take HGV theory test before getting provisional licence

The Department for Transport has recently announced that young people are to be allowed to undertake their theory tests to become an HGV driver before obtaining a provisional licence.

Chris Yarsley, Senior Policy Manager for Road Freight Regulation at business group Logistics UK said:

“Allowing young people to start their driver theory training before obtaining their provisional licences will kickstart their route into becoming HGV drivers. However, it is worth remembering that driving a vehicle of this size is a technically challenging occupation, which is highly regulated for a reason, and we will be ensuring as part of the

consultation that all the necessary training for qualification as a safe and compliant driver is still achieved before taking to the roads.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and

through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.

Small truck series with hydrogen combustion planned for 2025

MAN Truck & Bus have announced they are planning to launch a small series of trucks with a hydrogen combustion engine.

The initially planned small series of around 200 units is to be delivered to customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and selected non-European countries as early as 2025.

The “MAN hTGX”, as the vehicle will be called, offers an alternative zero-emission drive variant for special applications, for example for transporting heavy goods – such as construction work, tank transport or timber transport. The hTGX can also be an environmentally friendly alternative to battery-electric trucks for use in areas without sufficient charging infrastructure or for markets where sufficient hydrogen is already available. MAN will hand over its battery-electric truck to

customers for the first time in 2024 and scale it up from 2025. MAN has been the market leader for electric city buses in Europe since 2023.

“We are continuing to focus on battery-electric vehicles to decarbonize road freight transport. These currently have

Maddy Matheson appointed

Transaid’s Head of Fundraising

International development organisation, Transaid, has appointed twenty-six year old Maddy Mathesonas its new Head of Fundraising.

Maddy joined Transaid’s fundraising team in 2021, most recently serving as Communications and Corporate Partnerships Manager, where she was responsible for assisting the development and delivery of an ambitious fundraising strategy.

Within her new role she will head up Transaid’s fundraising operations, managing and developing a small but hardworking team which secures the majority of Transaid’s un-restricted funding. Together, they will be responsible for running events within the UK and internationally, managing more than 30 corporate partners and prospects, building supporter relationships and all communications activities.

Commenting on her appointment, Maddy says: “Transaid is an incredible organisation to work for and I am so excited by the opportunity to take the lead on fundraising and contribute further to our mission

of transforming lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport.

“We are in the fourth year of the UN’s Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety, and there is so much more we want to achieve as we continue to scale our work. Growing our income from fundraising will be central to this, as we look to expand our road safety and access to healthcare projects in sub-Saharan Africa.”

Caroline Barber, Chief Executive of Transaid, says: “Maddy has done a superb job since joining us. Building on her existing experience of the transport and logistics sector, she has really strengthened our communications, quickly deepened her relationships with the industry, taken on increased responsibility and is held in high regard by our team, partners and trustees. Maddy’s promotion is incredibly well deserved.”

clear advantages over other drive concepts in terms of energy efficiency and operating and energy costs. However, trucks powered by hydrogen combustion engines are a useful addition for special applications and markets. We anticipate that we will be able to best serve the vast majority of our customers’ transport applications with battery-powered trucks. For special applications, hydrogen combustion or, in the future, fuel cell technology is a suitable supplement. The hydrogen combustion engine H45 is based on the proven D38 diesel engine and is produced at the engine and battery plant in Nuremberg. The use of familiar technology enables us to enter the market at an early stage and thus provides a decisive impetus for the ramp-up of the hydrogen infrastructure. With the hTGX, we have now added an attractive product to our zero-emission portfolio,” says Friedrich Baumann, Executive Board Member of MAN Truck & Bus and responsible for Sales & Customer Solution.

Maddy takes over from Florence Bearman, who served as Head of Fundraising for seven years, and who had previously spent three and a half years working within the fundraising team. Florence stood down at the end of 2023 to take on a new challenge with the charity Malaria No More.

Schmitz Cargobull Trailers helps Yodel ‘deliver’ sustainability goals

Parcel courier Yodel has taken delivery of 80 new trailers from leading trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull.

Yodel ordered the S.BO PACE trailers from Schmitz Cargobull as part of its commitment to more sustainable deliveries.

Yodel, which makes more than 190 million deliveries annually, received its second significant order with Europe’s largest trailer manufacturer in just three years based on calculations suggesting it could help reduce annual fuel costs and 1,464kg in CO2 savings per trailer.

“We were hugely impressed with the scale of the potential savings presented by the UK team at Schmitz Cargobull, which align closely with the sustainability goals of our business. Yodel

has already made great strides in reducing our climate impact and this marks another step in our sustainability journey,” says Pasqualino Vaccarella, Regional Compliance Manager at Yodel.

“With the lighter weight of the S.BO PACE trailer compared to some of its competitors, we expect to see some tangible benefits in the

first year of operation, including substantial improvements in fuel economy across the fleet.”

Schmitz Cargobull’s production plant in Manchester moved quickly to turn around the order – building and delivering all the trailers within the space of four months.

The S.BO PACE trailers will operate the length and breadth of England,

Scotland and Wales, covering all of Yodel’s service centres as well as its three national sortation hubs. Designed for courier express parcel services transport, the S.BO PACE offers a weight saving of up to 700kg over traditional dry-freight trailer designs thanks to its STRUKTOPLAST panels – lightweight, polypropylene honeycomb-shaped core panels –which increases payload capability and leads to a significant reduction in fuel costs and CO2 emissions over the lifecycle of the trailer.

Yodel’s latest order with Schmitz Cargobull follows a £14m investment in its fleet over 2023, helping to meet growing demand and improve efficiency.

Vaccarella commended Schmitz Cargobull’s “fantastic” service, adding: “We’ve strengthened our relationship with the team who not only supported us all the way through the trailer build and aftercare but also got behind Yodel during our road safety week event and various other business initiatives. It’s a very productive partnership.”

Experience Ultra Rapid charging at a Maxol Recharge EV hub!

Maxol is Ireland’s largest family-owned convenience forecourt retailer and innovation and adaptation have been at the heart of the business over the last century and more.

In 2011, Maxol first introduced EV charging to their service stations and since then their charging network has grown to include the most advanced charging infrastructure in several locations around the country. In December 2022, Maxol EUROSPAR Kinnegar reopened following an investment of £2 million. It was a landmark moment, marking the opening of the first dedicated Ultra Rapid EV hub in Maxol’s estate and the first on the island of Ireland.

Maxol Kinnegar is now an award-winning location, winning Best Forecourt Retailer in

annum at the 2023 Forecourt Trader awards and the Best Destination or Services Charging Offering at the 2024 Electric Vehicle Awards. The site is also shortlisted in the Global Convenience Store Focus search for the “Best EV Hub in the World”.

Since the launch of Kinnegar, the Maxol Recharge network has grown quickly with state of the art chargers installed in Maxol Edenderry and Ultra Rapid EV hubs opened at Maxol Braid River in Co. Antrim and Maxol Newbridge in Co. Kildare. Each hub is powered with 100% renewable electricity and feature high

customers can charge their car in as little as 15 minutes, allowing them plenty of time to shop in-store and enjoy freshly prepared food or grab a tasty hot beverage. Later this year Maxol will open another Ultra Rapid EV hub at Maxol Belvoir, Co. Down and many more hubs are planned to be opened over the next three years.

Maxol’s commitment to introducing more hubs and a range of greener options for customers across the business, such as lower emission fuels including HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is central to The Maxol Group’s ESG strategy.

VOLVO UNVEILS HOW IT WILL ‘POWER’ TRUCKS INTO THE FUTURE

Volvo demonstrates how it is developing battery electric, internal combustion and hydrogen fuel cells at pan European driving event in Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

Just a few months ago we attended the launch in Gothenburg of Volvo’s extensive range additions across many of its popular truck models.

Now it’s time to get behind the wheel, and where better to experience the latest Volvo machines than in Greece.

Volvo’s pan-European driving event in Thessaloniki in northern Greece was a welcome event in more ways than just escaping our seemingly endless rainfall. It firmly highlighted that, for some manufacturers at least, development of the internal combustion engine is far from dead.

Despite the challenges presented by the government promoted stampede to electric power, some would say is too much, too soon, we suspect that for regional and long-haul road transport, “diesel” will continue to be the motive power of choice for a few more buying cycles yet, even if the actual content of the tank is not DERV as we know it.

Volvo Trucks obviously shares that view and, while offering arguably the widest range of medium and heavy-duty electric CVs in Europe, is clearly committed to keeping its options open, unlike some who have totally bet the farm on

electric. Volvo confirmed that it will follow a three-pronged development pathway, battery electric, internal combustion and hydrogen fuel cells.

Headlining the four-model driving line-up was the FH16 780 Aero, supported by diesel and electric versions of the FH Aero, and the FM. Apart from the 6x2 FH16 780, the test trucks were all 4x2 artics running at around 37 tonnes.

NEW SAFETY FEATURES

Before considering the trucks individually, it’s worth looking at the new features shared across the latest range.

The most significant is Volvo’s long-awaited CMS (Camera Monitor System). Ever since the first application arrived on the market in 2020, Volvo’s response has been that it would only launch a system that was significantly better. So has it succeeded? The answer is yes, Volvo CMS is a great improvement on the first offering on the Actros. Next is the extension of the driver assistance systems required to comply with GSR, the EU General Safety Regulations, which become mandatory in July 2024. In Volvo’s case, the most notable additions to already high level of safety equipment include the intelligent speed limit detection system, which notifies audibly when a speed limit changes or is being exceeded. It is incorporated into the latest version of the I-See predictive cruise control, reducing speeds to the prevailing limit, and which now also identifies hazards such as significant bends or roundabouts, adjusting speeds accordingly. It doesn’t yet the ability to link to navigation to know if, for example, you are going straight ahead at a roundabout or progressing further around. Also available, but not part of GRS, is Pilot Assist, a proactive lane keeping function which will maintain a course within a lane, subject to it being marked by reasonable quality lines.

Less safety critical but no less welcome is a new infotainment platform, which gives easy access to a huge range of functions and information from a single touch screen. A notable change is that the navigation is now the Sygic truck specific system which is well regarded. We were disappointed to learn that Apple CarPlay is still not supported on Volvo trucks. It may not sound a big deal, but many drivers welcome the ability to access their own personal environment whatever they drive. For the record, the official retail price of CMS as a standalone option is £1,973 or €2,300, but most should pay rather less as part of an options package.

BEHIND THE WHEEL

Volvo had devised a 326km route heading east towards Turkey, and passing the Bulgaria turn off, comprising a good mix of urban chaos, good standard dual highway and country roads. The route was split into four sections, with an equal amount of time in the four trucks. Interestingly, in and around Greece’s second city with 1.3 million inhabitants, we didn’t see a single cyclist to challenge the vulnerable road user warnings.

Our first stint, which included the biggest hill on the route, was in the FH Electric. Apart from minor instrument panel changes

to measure “fuel“ contents, the driving environment is absolutely identical to any other FM. Driving away simply involves turning the key to activate the driveline, then selecting the required direction of travel on the familiar quadrant. Up to around 15mph, the eerily smooth progress is made in absolute silence, apart from a barely audible clunk as the conventional 12-speed I-Shift transmission makes its first change. Even at cruising speed, the only

real sound is a distant whoosh from the tyres, and on most good surfaces, even that is minimal.

With its driveline rated at 490kW, or 657hp, gaining and maintaining speed even over the big hill proved effortless, and it’s hard to imagine a more relaxing way of moving a trailer full of goods around the country. However, it’s currently only an option for a limited number of operations here.

If you have longer to travel

24 EXPORT&FREIGHT
IN PROFILE WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM

you might find our next drive, the FM 500 Globetrotter a bit more suitable.

Although lacking the outright interior space of its FH relatives, it makes up for it by its ease of access and its excellent visibility giving a feeling of being connected to the outside world. Clearly not on the same level as the FH Electric, the FM nevertheless proved remarkably quiet and refined. On a less challenging route of good dualcarriageway and curvy national roads, we had a chance to evaluate the new tech more closely.

PILOT ASSIST

Pilot Assist, which is easily accessed as another option on the cruise control menu, works well at maintaining a course between the lane markings most of the time. The first proviso is that the markings remain clearly visible to the camera, indicated by corresponding lines on the dash. When they become too faded, the system just stops working. We also discovered if you don’t keep your hands on the wheel

you get a discreet warning on the dashboard after 15 seconds. If you don’t respond, the warnings escalate until the system assumes you’re incapacitated - and goes into panic mode. This applies the hazard lights, gradually brings you to a standstill, unlocks the doors and turns on the interior lights.

Leg 3 was in the FH 460 Aero I-Save, Volvo’s fuel consumption champion. With less outright power and its driveline software optimised for economy, progress was inevitably rather more leisurely, with more radical intervention from the

I-See predictive cruise control, on lateral as well as vertical deviations. The speed reduction for significant bends was well judged. The speed limit recognition was remarkably accurate, with the limit change sound, which is easily turned off, coinciding exactly with the limit post, having already brought you gently down to the right speed.

Our final sector, back over the big hill into Thessaloniki, was in the FH16 780 Aero. Apart from the unique black trimmed interior, there’s surprisingly little to say about it. The new 17-litre engine’s 780hp,

or more importantly, its 3,800Nm of torque, just eats mountains. It isn’t for everyone, just those who need those numbers for heavy haulage or long-distance transport where gross weights of 60 tonnes or more are the norm, or those who just want the ultimate.

With the ability to no longer worry about topography, we did get to concentrate on CMS. Some tight junctions around the mid-leg changeover point, where we had permission to ignore the 3.5 tonne limit, and one particularly hostile curved toll booth, provided good opportunities to challenge the system.

Simply, it does what it’s meant to do perfectly well, and the automatic panning, which always points to the back of the trailer, was particularly impressive.

A few longish tunnels showed that the night mode works, and given that Greek drivers don’t flash you in, the trailer end marker line came in handy with the number of local trucks our 780hp sped us past.

TFS - DELIVERING HEALTHY SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH SMART LOGISTICS

As sustainability and corporate governance continue to race up the agenda, the spotlight is being shone, with some intensity, on Supply Chains and no more so than the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Sector.

Manchester and Antrim based TransBridge Freight Services Ltd are an independent, door to door specialist in the transportation of Temperature Controlled Pharmaceutical products from GB to Northern Ireland and Republic Of Ireland. They are meeting the challenge head on through investment and radical logistic solutions to meet the expectations of their high-profile clients.

Well known within the Medical Supply Chain sphere, Director, Brian Anderton explains how Trans-Bridge Freight Services Ltd continue to trail blaze this highly regulated market to a challenging geographic.

To bring us up to date with what’s been happening at Trans-Bridge Freight Services over the past few years, Brian answered a few questions about the business for Export and Freight May/ June edition.

26 EXPORT&FREIGHT IN PROFILE WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM

Q1. WHAT’S NEW WITH TRANS-BRIDGE FREIGHT SERVICES LTD SINCE WE LAST HEARD FROM YOU BACK IN 2021?

A Brexit and Covid taught us a lot about how to innovate and evolve into the commercial world we now find ourselves in. Our Contingency Planning is now far more robust and our approach to how we do business is significantly more streamlined than before.

Most importantly it highlighted to all the Directors, what a fantastic team of people we have in our business who all pulled together and achieved amazing things in very challenging circumstances. We now have shiny new premises in Manchester that we moved into in May 2022 (after securing our Wholesale Dealers Authorisation (WDA) from the MHRA).

This 5.5 Acre site has facilitated much smoother operational flows, enhanced our security and compliance standards, improved staff wellbeing and overall puts the business on a firm footing for decades to come.

Q2. HAS THE NEW SITE IN MANCHESTER ALLOWED YOU TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT?

A Yes absolutely. Part of the planning application itself focused heavily on Sustainability and Corporate Governance. The renovations included a complete re-installation of the

Electrical Infrastructure, utilising LED Lighting, Energy Saving technology such as motion sensors and smart heating solutions.

A total of eight Fast Charging points were installed into the main carpark, in conjunction with a car fleet that now is exclusively Hybrid and Full Electric plus various incentives for our staff to participate in reducing our CO2 emissions such as a Cycleto-Work scheme.

EXPORT&FREIGHT 27 IN PROFILE WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM

Q3. APART FROM USE OF ELECTRIC CARS, HAVE YOU INTRODUCED ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE FUEL ASSETS INTO YOUR FLEET.

A Yes, we have a full fleet of Electric Linde Forklifts. We also showcased our first Electric Powered Temperature Controlled Trailer at the Distributing Pharma show in April. This revolutionary technology allows the trailer to maintain multi temperatures powered solely by Electricity.

At base we can plug the trailer in as is possible with a conventional trailer which will charge the battery- but the clever bit is the battery will continue to charge whilst the trailer is in motion by a direct drive from the middle axle generating clean efficient power. We went the extra mile and fitted a conventional engine onto the trailer as a contingency should the trailer be caught up in unexpected lengthy delays with no access to a power supply or able to move, but rigorous testing shows the trailer will hold sufficient charge to hold temperature for around 6 hours. Electric trucks remain under review

for now as we watch with interest the feedback from the big operators trials, but charging infrastructure, qualified technicians and an uncertain residual market are still areas of concern.

Solar power is our next focus with Antrim likely to be the first depot to have roof panels installed with the long term goal of storing the power harvested.

Q4. WHAT OTHER WAYS ARE YOU PROVIDING CLIENTS WITH AN ACHIEVABLE SUSTAINABILITY PLAN?

A Our Independence is our USP, which allows us to provide a shared user experience whilst maintaining the highest levels of service and compliance. Almost all of the key 3PL Providers in the Healthcare Sector utilise our services in to Northern Ireland and ROI as it eliminates the requirement to allocate their own fleet.

By offering a Parcel to FTL service at both Ambient Controlled and Chilled temperature ranges our consolidation reduces their own CO2 impact and further more reduces the frequency of delivery vehicles into wholesalers,

hospitals, pharmacies and even patient home deliveries. Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Providers are challenged not only on Scope 1 emissions but also now Scope 2 and 3 which is where we play an import role.

Maximising vehicle capacity through a Community of Trust ethos throughout the Supply Chain has a massive impact on the reduction of CO 2 and outstrips any currently viable technology by far.

NAVIGATING INSURANCE PREMIUM PRESSURES

Understanding insurance rate increases in Northern Ireland’s Transport and Logistics Sector

The ever-evolving transport and logistics industry on the island of Ireland faces escalating operational costs, with rising insurance premiums standing out as a critical challenge, writes Ciaran McGurgan, Head of Haulage, AbbeyAutoline.

As Northern Ireland’s largest insurance broker, we are committed to providing clarity and assisting transport and logistics businesses in navigating these premium increases, which can have significant implications for operational sustainability and growth.

The transport and logistics sector has seen significant premium rate increases over the past two years, and projections indicate a further rise in 2024.

This increase in premiums is due to a stark rise in claims costs, rising vehicle repair costs, and prolonged repair times due to parts shortage and lack of skilled labour —factors that are unavoidably passed on to businesses.

Many insurance companies are grappling with losses, prompting a hike in premiums to cover climbing claims costs. The withdrawal of insurers from the market has significantly reduced competition, which has exacerbated the rate of cost increases.

When examining the causes, we find global supply chain disruptions—exacerbated by recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and Brexit—have led to a shortage of essential vehicle repair parts and increased replacement vehicle costs. As a result, the cost of vehicle parts and materials has risen sharply therefore increasing vehicle repair costs, which is directly impacting the risk and cost of insurance claims.

Labour shortages are also driving up the costs associated with hiring skilled mechanics and technicians to repair vehicles. This shortage of mechanics and technicians is resulting in delays in vehicle repairs, causing a knock-on effect that increases the demand and cost for replacement vehicles. These higher repair costs, longer repair times, and the rising price

of replacement vehicles are significantly influencing the increase in insurance premiums, as insurers adjust to cover the increased costs and the higher risk of claims due to operational disruptions.

The Northern Ireland Ogden discount rate, which plays a pivotal role in determining the compensation for personal injury claims, have seen changes that significantly impact the cost of catastrophic personal injury claims. This means insurers must adjust their pricing to account for higher lump-sum payments to claimants, which has ultimately driven up the cost of insurance premiums for businesses.

In addition to personal injury claims, business owners must also

consider how inflation impacts the cost of materials, repairs, and labour in relation to third-party liability for property damage.

An incident involving property damage, whether by a company vehicle or other causes linked to your business operations, might lead to a claims cost that surpasses your insurance policy’s limits.

The integration of advanced technology in modern vehicles brings a double-edged sword to the transport and logistics industry. While these innovations offer unprecedented efficiency and safety benefits, they also come with higher maintenance and repair costs. Consequently, when accidents occur, the cost of repairs or replacing parts leads to an increase

in the average cost of insurance claims, contributing to a noticeable increase in insurance premiums.

In the face of these unprecedented insurance premium increases,

AbbeyAutoline’s role as a trusted broker is more critical than ever in helping transport and logistics businesses navigate these increases. Our substantial presence in the Northern Ireland marketplace allows us to leverage our extensive knowledge of the industry and strong relationships with our extensive network of insurers to negotiate competitive premiums, even for the most complex haulage risks.

Our capability to secure competitive and comprehensive insurance solutions for our clients is particularly vital for haulage companies with a history of adverse claims. Our market share and reputation enable us to negotiate terms that not only reflects an understanding of the risks involved but also deliver the cover necessary to support the business’s continued growth and operational sustainability.

AbbeyAutoline goes beyond standard coverages, recognising the complexities and dynamic nature of the transport and logistics sector. We cover the unique needs of businesses, ensuring that every asset, journey, and risk is accounted for providing peace of mind in the event of a claim.

AbbeyAutoline, as Northern Ireland’s largest insurance broker, is here to help transport and logistics businesses navigate the complexities of rising insurance premiums, ensuring they secure tailored Haulage Insurance that provides the protection they need at a cost they can afford.

POTENTIAL FOR REDUCING EMISSIONS IN HGV SECTOR IS ‘IMMENSE’

Logistics UK host Decarbonising your Fleet event

A number of barriers must be overcome if the transport industry in Northern Ireland is to further reduce its carbon emissions.

That was the message coming from the recent Logistics UK event ‘Pathways to Decarbonising your HGV fleet’ hosted by Nichola Mallon at Corrs Corner.

The breakfast meeting, attended by representatives from across the transport industry and other stakeholders including representatives from local councils, heard what the current situation is with regards to carbon emissions from the transport sector here – and about ways to get these levels significantly reduced. In 2022, emissions in the UK of the seven greenhouse gases that the UK reports internationally were estimated to be 426.5 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e).

Nichola Mallon told delegates that Northern Ireland is responsible for 5.3% of that total. Since, 1990 England has reduced its emissions by over 50%, Scotland just below that at 49.3 % and Wales 35% - but Northern Ireland have only managed a 23.2% reduction here even with the off-set potential of our forests.

The policy landscape for HGV decarbonisation in Northern Ireland has several key frameworks and initiatives including the Green Growth Strategy (Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), and the Energy Strategy (published by the Department of Economy in 2021).

“These strategies underscore the integration of sustainable practices across all sectors including HGVs aiming to foster economic growth while reducing our impact on the environment, said Ms Mallon.

“As with all Government strategies, however, ensuring they are fully delivered is the major challenge. And it must be a key priority!”

“As well as the Executive’s policies, the UK Government ‘Transport Decarbonise Plan’ provides a critical backdrop - It outlines ambitious proposals to phase out petrol and diesel HGVs with clear time lines set out for different weight categories” continued Ms Mallon.

“The implications of these plans for Northern Ireland is profound, necessitating adaptations in fleet operations, investment in alternativelyfueled vehicles and significant enhancement in infrastructure. This policy framework is also supported by financial mechanisms and incentives designed to make this transition.”

Investment in vehicle charging infrastructure, grants for zero emission vehicles and schemes to support the adoption of hydrogen fuelled technologies are among the initiatives that stakeholders within the transport/logistics sector must navigate, the meeting heard.

“Financial incentives like these are essential to offset the high initial costs faced by companies transitioning to these new technologies – and to the use of alternatively fuelled vehicles. Collaboration between the public and private sectors is paramount in this journey.”

“The role of policy is not only to mandate but to enable - by facilitating knowledge exchange – just as we are doing here today - by fostering partnerships, providing a clear regulatory framework and incentives the Government can support the logistics sector in overcoming the barriers of decarbonisation.

Before introducing a number of guest speakers, Ms Mallon said the potential for reducing emissions in the HGV sector is ‘immense’, considering the options out there including battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell technology and the range of digital telematics systems that are available.

And that realising this potential requires concerted effort, strategic investments and shared commitment to sustainability.

“THE SITUATION IS COMPLEX AND EVOLVING”

The meeting then focused on three methods of reducing the carbon emissions from the transport industry, and heard from speakers talking about HVO, Biomethane and Hydrogen fuel.

Rodd Hawkins, Bus Development Manager at Nicholl Oils said HVO is not the answer for decarbonizing your fleet, but it can be a significant part of decarbonizing your fleet.

Nicholl Oils first imported HVO HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) during 2021, and volumes have increased significantly month on month / year on year since then.

Mr Hawkins said that early adopters of HVO include local Councils, NI Film Industry, manufacturing, mobile power generation, horticultural sector, food wholesale, transport & logistics. However, an issue with it is the cost – there is over 50p fuel duty in it, which the Government is being asked to do something about.

Academics Dr. James Young, from the Centre for Competitiveness and Dr. Kevin Morgan, from Queens University Belfast then gave presentations on Biomethane.

The current biomethane production could fuel 8.5% of all HGVs in the UK – but it has the potential to fuel up to 40% of HGVs.

Unlike HVO, which requires no set up costs, or changes to diesel powered vehicles, biomethane requires diesel vehicles to be converted to run on gas – which comes at a cost.

The final speakers were Alwyn Campbell – Advanced Energy Management UK, and Jaimey Brown M.A. Hydrotrux who discussed the option and possibilities of using Hydrogen as a fuel for the transport sector.

The meeting heard the advances in the use of hydrogen, and the hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Following a question and answer session with each of the speakers Nichola Mallon summed up the themes that had been covered during the morning discussion.

“Yes, there are many challenges to be overcome on this path but momentum is building, technology is advancing and there are opportunities to be seized.

‘Our collective responsibility is to navigate this landscape with foresight, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to our environmental and economic future.”

MAN sends first autonomous truck on the motorway

MAN has become the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to send an autonomous truck onto the German motorway. On board of the test truck, which drove around ten kilometres on the A9 between the Allershausen and Fürholzen junctions, were Federal Transport Minister Dr Volker Wissing and MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp.

MAN has been intensively driving forward the development of autonomous trucks for use in logistics hubs and for hub-to-hub traffic on motorways for some time and recently became the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to receive a Level 4 test permit based on the law on autonomous driving on German motorways. Freight volumes and, in particular, transport between logistics hubs – such as the warehouses of large online department stores – are growing steadily.

The use of autonomous trucks in this so-called hub-to-hub transport is particularly suitable for this. The trucks are always on the road, extremely efficient in terms of consumption and safe to drive. There are no driving time breaks, so the vehicles can be perfectly integrated into tightly synchronised logistics

processes. In the long term, the efficient use of autonomous trucks can reduce overall operating costs by ten to 15 per cent. The new technology can also alleviate the driver shortage. There is already a shortage of up to 100,000 truck drivers in Germany alone.

”The first Level 4 test drive of an autonomous truck on a German motorway proves that Germany has taken a leading position in Europe with the law on autonomous driving. Our goal is to become the leading market for automated and connected driving. Today is a milestone for logistics in Germany. The ever-increasing volume of transport, coupled with the worsening shortage of drivers, is a challenge for society as a whole. Autonomous trucks can help to alleviate the situation. In addition, the intelligent networking of freight transport offers the opportunity to make

transhipment from road to rail more efficient and thus strengthen climate-friendly combined transport”, says Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport.

Around 500 engineers at MAN and the TRATON GROUP are driving autonomous driving forward, and over 133 patents have already been registered. Driverless driving has the potential to prevent fatigue accidents, optimize transport processes and counteract the current shortage of around 100,000 truck drivers.

GOODS VEHICLE OPERATORS

– Do you understand your operator licensing obligations regarding tachographs and driver’s hours!

In previous articles within this magazine, I’ve explained the framework of requirements for operator licensing and set out some of the requirements operators need to be familiar with including general maintenance, brakes and licence undertakings. In this feature I will cover an operator’s responsibility for managing tachographs and driver’s hours.

Every operator who holds a goods vehicle operator’s licence where the vehicles operated fall within scope of the EU requirements pertaining to the fitment and use of tachographs must make proper arrangements so that the rules on driver’s hours and tachographs are observed and proper records retained. This particular requirement is stipulated on every operator’s licence under the “General Undertakings” section. It is critical for fair competition, road safety and driver welfare that operators ensure all their drivers comply with the requisite requirements on driver’s hours and rest periods.

It is an operator’s legal responsibility to ensure that all staff - including

drivers and transport plannersare familiar with the relevant requirements for driver’s hours and rest periods. They also must ensure drivers work is organised to enable them to adhere to the legal requirements, that proper records are retained, and adequate guidance is provided with regular monitoring taking place. Operators are also legally responsible for ensuring drivers are familiar with the correct functioning of the various types of tachographs within the fleet. It is therefore essential operators have established an induction/ training process where all staff are appropriately briefed on the company’s policy for managing driver’s hours, rest periods and

records. Full records of this training should be retained in staff’s relevant files.

DIGITAL TACHOGRAPHS

It’s an operator’s responsibility to ensure that data is downloaded from both driver’s cards and vehicle units as follows:

• Download driver cards as a minimum every 28 days however it’s recommended this is undertaken more frequently – weekly or fortnightly.

• Download vehicle units as a minimum every 90 days however it is recommended this is undertaken more frequently in line with the driver cards. It now common for operators

to install remote automatic downloaders to vehicles and this ensures consistent and compliant downloads are completed without having to ensure its undertaken manually either by the drivers or transport manager/ responsible person. It is also important to monitor downloads frequently to ensure the remote downloaders are operating.

The frequency of the downloads will dictate the frequency of analysis and again the more frequent the analysism the easier and quicker it will be to spot and address any potential issues.

It is suggested this is weekly or fortnightly - with both driver data and vehicle data analysed together so any missing KMs/unaccounted drivers can be reconciled.

The transport manager/responsible person should set aside some time each week/fortnight to assess the analysis. Any alleged infringements should be reviewed

FROM THE OFFICE OF WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
34 EXPORT&FREIGHT

John Martin

in conjunction with any driver printouts, and any missing KMs/ unaccounted driving information with supporting evidence retained.

Where there are no printouts to explain any infringements, these should be discussed with the relevant driver with an explanation sought and the infringement signed off by the driver and transports manager/responsible person.

Separate driver infringement folders should be retained.

All data relating to EU tachographs and driver’s hours requirements must be retained for a minimum of 12 months and that includes any drivers that may have left the operators employment.

Where a driver/s have repeat or serious infringements the operator should illustrate what action they have taken to address the issue ranging from retraining through to disciplinary action with full records retained on file.

Where there is missing KMs/ unaccounted driving this must be investigated and closed. If it is maintenance related, an explanation must be provided and supported with evidence of the maintenance work undertaken (Safety inspection sheet, maintenance repair job card, invoice or annual roadworthiness test appointment/certificate etc.).

If a driver card is lost, stolen, becomes damaged or malfunctions they must report it to the issuing authority immediately and order a new card within 7 days and return a damaged or malfunctioning card. If a lost or stolen card is subsequently found, the driver must return it to the issuing authority after first downloading the data stored on it. Whilst awaiting delivery of the new card the driver must take printouts at the start and the end of each day on which they drive. They must write their name, driver card or driver licence number and the vehicle registration number, then sign each print out.

It is advisable to take two printouts on each occasion one to be retained by the driver for 28 days

and the other to be handed to the transport manager/responsible person upon return to the depot. A driver can only drive for a maximum of 15 calendar days whilst waiting for a replacement card.

A driver is required to order a replacement card no later than 15 days prior to its expiry. However, they can order a replacement card up to 90 days before the expiry of the current card.

It is advisable that replacement cards are ordered early to avoid the potential for a card not being delivered on time. The issuing authority is required to issue a replacement card before the expiry of the old card provided its ordered within the 15 day time limit, but to avoid any issues order replacement

cards early! A driver who is waiting for their first driver card or a replacement card where the original card has expired is not permitted to drive until they have a valid card.

It is also important that the transport manager/responsible person reviews the detail of driver cards used in their vehicles to detect any unauthorized drivers cards/ unknow drivers cards being used.

Any good driver’s hours and tachograph system should include as a minimum:

• Tachograph calibration due dates must be included on the maintenance planner and are undertaken every 2 years.

• Issuing tachograph record sheets (charts) and as a minimum 2 spare print rolls for digital tachographs The transport manager (or delegated person) should keep a record detailing:

• the quantity and type of charts/ print rolls issued (i.e. make and type approval number); and

• the driver’s name and date of issue.

• Returning tachograph record sheets (charts) and printouts from digital tachographs

• The transport manager (or delegated person) should keep a record detailing:

• the date and time of return of the charts or printouts; and

• any other relevant details, including the quantity, the date of each chart/ printout, the reasons for the printout and any unusual aspect (e.g. damaged or defaced charts, missing charts).

• Lock-in and lockout of digital tachographs using a company card:

• Company cards are provided to assist operators in managing digital data. The tachograph will have a record of all driving and will enable identification of all driver cards used and periods of driving where no card has been used.

The Department for Infrastructure’s Driver & Vehicle Agency have an excellent publication available via the following link Goods Vehicle Licensing - Rules on drivers’ hours and tachographs | Department for Infrastructure (infrastructure-ni.gov.uk) that provides a more detailed guidance on drivers hours and tachograph requirements.

• Copies of digital driver card details should be retained by the operator with a 12 monthly check undertaken of the card and a reminder process to be issued to drivers 90 days prior to the cards expiry date with a follow-up issued again 30 days prior to expiry.

GREATER AWARENESS NEEDED OVER “GREEN LANE” FOR PARCELS

Over eight months ago, phase one of the Windsor Framework’s “green lane” went live with implementation of the UK Internal Market Scheme, the Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme and the Northern Ireland Plant Health Label Scheme.

Traders and hauliers moving goods under these schemes have had to adapt their systems and processes to ensure compliance and Logistics UK continues to work closely with members and the government in Westminster to streamline things where possible. We are also mindful that a significant date is looming and fast approaching when from 30 September the “green lane” takes full effect and is expanded to include freight and parcels. With the rise of online shopping, parcels have become a part of everyday life for so many consumers and businesses. And yet, awareness of the changes regarding parcels is still low throughout the industry. There is a critical need for a high-profile awareness and readiness campaign, to be led by government, across business and industry to ensure parcels continue to move smoothly. At Logistics UK we are keen to play our part in ensuring that our members are aware of the changes to be implemented and what they need to do to be ready. The arrangements for parcels moving directly from GB to NI will depend on the type of movement and whether the senders and recipients are businesses or consumers:

1. Business to consumer (B2C): Goods sent for personal use by a business in GB to an individual customer living in NI.

2. Consumer to business (C2B): Goods sent by an individual in GB to a business in NI (e.g. a customer returning an item to a business).

3. Consumer to consumer (C2C): Goods for personal use of a non-commercial nature sent by an individual in GB to an individual living in NI.

4. Business to business (B2B): Goods sent by a business in GB to a business in NI.

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS PARCEL MOVEMENTS

From 30 September 2024, business to business parcels destined for NI will be handled in line with the processes in place for freight. This means that either the sending or the receiving

business will need to be authorised under the new UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS) to use the “green lane” when moving goods that are not considered “at risk” of entering the EU. Businesses will need to provide the carrier moving the parcel with their UKIMS number when sending parcels from GB to NI: companies can apply for authorisation for the UK Internal Market Scheme here – https:// www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-authorisationfor-the-uk-internal-market-scheme-if-youbring-goods-into-northern-ireland

Where business to business movements take place within UKIMS, the information that needs to be provided to carriers is simplified and must contain a description of the contents such as ‘shampoo’ or ‘plastic cups’. In some cases, such as for controlled goods such as tobacco or certain knives, additional fields or information may be required due to the specific risk profile of the goods, or to ensure the movement can be accurately processed. It is important to remember that goods that are moved between GB and NI but not within UKIMS cannot use the “green lane” and will have to follow the processes required for imports into the EU.

Business to consumer and consumer to business parcel movements

To use the “green lane” when moving consumer parcels from GB to NI, carriers need to join the UK Carrier Scheme (UKC) which opened for registration on 1 May 2024. To be part of this scheme, carriers will need to show they have processes in place to determine whether the goods they are transporting are being sent to a private individual, or a business. They will also need to show their processes for collecting and providing data on the parcel movements to HMRC based on commercial information they receive when the order is placed, such as details of the sender and recipient and information on the parcel’s contents, including a description of the goods. Carriers can find more information and

apply for UKC authorisation here: https:// www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-youcan-apply-for-the-uk-carrier-scheme

Because it is the carriers who need to apply to join the UK Carrier Scheme, GB businesses sending parcels to consumers for personal use in NI do not need to be registered in any scheme. The same is true for consumers sending parcels to businesses, for example when returning items. The new processes will be initiated automatically when the carrier is informed that a parcel is destined for a consumer or sent by a consumer to a business. For parcels going to a consumer from GB to NI it is not necessary for businesses to provide a declaration or a commodity code, rather they just need to provide the carrier with a goods description as part of the usual process. In addition, there will be no customs declarations, tariffs, prenotification or presentation of goods to customs authorities when parcels are sent to, or by, consumers. It is important to note that the UK Carrier Scheme cannot be used for moving business to business parcels.

MORE SUPPORT NEEDED FOR TRADERS

These customs changes and new arrangements for parcel movements are set to become operational at the end of September, in four months’ time. Not much time is left and the feedback we have had from our members shows there is a critical need for government guidance to be written in plain English and tailored for each actor in the supply chain based in both GB and NI. Given such challenging timescales we are also working with the government to ensure there is specific engagement and road testing with hauliers given their key role. Logistics UK continues to make the case that everything possible must be done to ease the burden on the haulier in particular. And for all involved, easy access to clear and well-structured information with practical guidance will be paramount when navigating these forthcoming changes. STUDENTS ARE FIRST IN NI TO COMPLETE TRAINING ON HYDROGEN FUEL CELL ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Automotive students at South West College, Dungannon campus have made history by becoming the first in Northern Ireland (NI) to complete a City and Guilds Level 3 Award in Knowledge of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles and Components.

The cutting-edge course, utilizing the college’s new Toyota Mirai rig, is the first of its kind in further education in NI and has been praised for providing students with the skills and expertise needed to work safely on and around Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). The qualification, validated by City & Guilds, covers everything from hydrogen system understanding to component removal and replacement, making it a crucial step in preparing students for the future of automotive technology. Speaking about the innovative course Craig Black, business

owner at CB Auto Repairs, shared that the course has provided him with the essential knowledge and skills required to work safely with hydrogen vehicles, and views the qualification as extremely valuable.

Craig said: “I have obtained valuable knowledge about hydrogen fuel cells and the mechanics of hydrogen vehicles, which I can now bring into the workplace. I am delighted to be among the first recipients of this qualification, as I believe it will only grow in significance in the future.”

Patrick Loughran, owner of Loughran Commercials, also completed the course and

emphasized the importance of training with the latest technology, specifically the first hydrogen engine rig on campus.

Patrick said: “It was great to be able to train using this new technology, which major manufacturers are already transitioning towards.”

Pat O’Hanlon, Deputy Head of Department for Sustainability, Construction, and Transport at SWC, emphasizes the importance of preparing students for the future of hydrogen infrastructure.

“ As the automotive landscape evolves, hydrogen-powered vehicles are at the forefront of sustainable transportation.

For instance, in Germany there are currently 100 hydrogen fuelling stations, Holland has around 20-30, and Belgium also has around 20-30. This indicates that hydrogen infrastructure will eventually come to our area as well.

“Hydrogen-powered cars are already being produced, making it important for students to familiarize themselves with this technology. This course provides students with the opportunity to do just that. We congratulate all participants and believe that this qualification will help them stay ahead in their careers and excel in the industry.”

McCulla receives ‘cool’ delivery of 33 new refrigerated trailers

McCulla Ireland, the cold-chain storage and transport specialist, has bolstered its fleet with the addition of 33 new S.KO COOL SMART refrigerated semi-trailers.

The final reefers from the order hit the road in recent weeks, cementing a partnership between the two businesses that is now into its second decade.

Brian Beattie, Operations Director at McCulla Ireland, says: “We took our first two semitrailers from Schmitz Cargobull in 2008 having been exclusively with another manufacturer before. The trailers we’ve had in the years since have all proved to be robust products with great longevity and build quality.”

Family-owned McCulla Ireland is celebrating 55-years of trading this year and has built its business by cultivating long-term relationships with clients, an approach it is utilising with Schmitz Cargobull too.

“We had an issue a few years back and they fixed it very quickly. The customer service they provide is excellent, and the

level of attention you receive from their team throughout the process is impressive. It really is a partnership,” he says.

Supplied by Kevin Wynd, Regional Sales Manager at Schmitz Cargobull, the latest order comprises single and multi-temperature trailers and a specification honed over many years to

meet McCulla Ireland’s exacting requirements. McCulla Ireland, which has its headquarters in Lisburn, operates three cold-stores across the island of Ireland with a combined capacity to house 15,000 pallets. It also provides value-added services, including blast freezing and tempering. Its operation, which sees it moving everything from frozen chips to highend pharmaceuticals, involves sending unaccompanied trailers across the Irish Sea. On the occasions that damage does occur, during sea crossings for example, the ability for its in-house technicians to simply replace the affected panels rather than the whole side of the trailer thanks to a segmented design, is yet another reason the percentage of Schmitz Cargobull products in the McCulla Ireland fleet continues to grow.

Its latest semi-trailers all feature Schmitz Cargobull’s TrailerConnect® telematics system and are built on a galvanised MODULUS bolted chassis. The chassis has been designed for both strength and durability and comes with a 10-year warranty against rust-through on all galvanised parts.

The partnership will begin a new chapter later this year, with the arrival of a new ‘pharmaceutical specification’ S.KO trailer, which features advanced load security. It will be fitted with a double deck loading beam system, which will allow 66 pallets to be transported per load.

SAVE FUEL, AND SAVE THE PLANET, WITH 5th GEN CONTI ECO TYRE

Continental launches the fifth-generation Conti Eco Tyre line for the transport industry

Tyres are the decisive point of contact between the vehicle and the road. Care, precision, and efficiency have made Continental one of the world’s leading Tyre manufacturers.

The 5th Gen Conti Eco Tyre, Continental’s new product geared squarely to the needs of customers in the transport sector, was unveiled to the European press at a special event in Hanover attended by Export and Freight’s Pamela McGookin.

The two-day event held in Hanover marked an important milestone for Continental, one of the leading Tyre manufacturers in the world. The launch, which took place at the new headquarters, gathered key figures such as Ferdinand Hoyos, Tansu Isik, and Jorge Almeida to discuss the company’s strategy and ambitions for the future.

At the start of the event, Ferdinand Hoyos, Head of Business Area Replacement Tyres EMEA, set the tone by emphasizing the importance of compliance, safety, and understanding customers’ needs. This highlights Continental’s expertise in not only producing high-quality Tyres but also in prioritizing the well-being and satisfaction of their customers.

Tansu Isik, Head of Region South, Channels Fleet, and OE Trailers, then took the stage to discuss Continental’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. With years of experience in the industry, Isik’s authority was evident as he outlined the company’s ambitious goals for reducing environmental impact and meeting the needs of a rapidly changing market.

Jorge Almeida, Vice President of Sustainability Tyres, reiterated Continental’s dedication to

sustainable practices and ethical business operations. By focusing on sustainability, Continental aims to build trust with customers who are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of the products they buy.

CONTINENTAL’S DRIVE FOR CHANGE.

Throughout the event, it was clear that Continental is on a mission to drive change in the industry. By prioritizing compliance, safety, and sustainability, the company is not only setting new standards for itself but also

for the enTyre Tyre manufacturing sector.

One of the key takeaways from the event was Continental’s unwavering commitment to compliance and safety. In an industry where quality and reliability are paramount, Continental’s emphasis on these aspects showcases its dedication to providing customers with the best products possible.

Another important aspect highlighted during the event was Continental’s focus on understanding and meeting customer needs. By putting the customer at the center of its business strategy, Continental demonstrates its commitment to

delivering products that exceed expectations and provide real value to consumers.

Delegates attending the exciting launch event also got a tour of Continental’s retread factory and heard about all the developments Continental are making across their range of products.

The new Tyre line meets all the requirements of the EU Taxonomy for fleets. The completely newly developed truck Tyres from Continental allow haulage companies to significantly reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in both regional and long-distance operations, and to cut costs. With the new generation of the Conti Eco, the Tyre manufacturer’s development experts were able to resolve the conflicting goals of optimized rolling resistance and high mileage.

The Tyres are now available in many countries across the EMEA region – in Conti Eco HS 5 form for the tractor unit’s steer axle and Conti Eco HD 5 form for the drive axle.

Continental has been working intensively on the development of the new product line for several years, with extensive testing completed prior to market launch. “We are in no doubt that we are offering our customers the right Tyre at the right time,” says Ferdinand Hoyos. Rising operating and personal costs, as well as investment in sustainability and a rapidly changing legal landscape, are among the most frequently cited challenges for fleet operators in Europe – and it is just these challenges Continental are hoping to provide a solution to with their new product.

“Our new Tyre builds on its successful predecessors – the Conti EcoPlus Gen3+ for long-distance haulage and the Conti EcoRegional Gen3+ for regional transport,” explains Hinnerk Kaiser, who is responsible for development of truck and bus Tyres at Continental. “The new Conti Eco brings together the best qualities of the Conti EcoPlus and Conti EcoRegional, and elevates them to a new level.”

This is made possible by optimized rolling resistance and higher mileage capability –classically conflicting goals in the world of Tyre development. “In the past, if a Tyre ran particularly smoothly and therefore needed less

drive energy, that might come at the expense of robustness and durability,” points out Kaiser. Now the Tyre developers at Continental concentrate on mileage-neutral measures to improve rolling resistance across all components – in the construction of the casing, the treads and the design of the overall contour and tread. The treads, with their two-layer construction (cap and base) and innovative compounds, enable a high mileage and considerable robustness while also optimizing rolling resistance. The road contact compound (cap) allows the developers to focus on mileage and robustness. The optimized rolling resistance and high mileage of the new Conti Eco Tyres have a positive effect on their environmental footprint. “If our product increases the fuel efficiency of a truck and lasts longer, the result is lower CO2 emissions,” says Hinnerk Kaiser. Choosing the right Tyres is therefore becoming even more important, not least given the emissions-based toll charges for fleet operators in the EU. “

CONTINUED FOCUS ON RETREADING

The new Tyres also make a convincing impression with their excellent grip, allow heavy goods vehicles to display safe and secure handling – even in fluctuating weather conditions – and offer outstanding traction throughout their lifespans. Customers can also ask for them to be delivered directly from the factory with latestgeneration sensors. This allows the Conti Eco Gen 5 to drive the progress of fleet digitalization and – in conjunction with the ContiConnect 2.0 Tyre management solution – enables remote monitoring in real time and predictive service planning. This helps to substantially reduce Tyre-related operating costs, as do the retreading solutions from Continental. A retreaded Tyre consists up to 70 percent of material from the old Tyre and costs up to 40 percent less than a new Tyre, while offering equal mileage and safety.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE

As the event came to a close, the message was clear: Continental is not content with resting on its laurels. The company’s ambitious goals and

forward-thinking approach signal its readiness to embrace change and lead the way towards a more sustainable and customer-centric future.

The Continental event in Hanover was a testament to the company’s experience, expertise, authority, and trust in the industry. By focusing on compliance, safety, sustainability, and customer needs, Continental is setting a new standard for Tyre manufacturers worldwide. As the industry continues to evolve, Continental’s drive for change and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly keep them at the forefront of innovation and customer satisfaction.

Driver had no CPC card and overweight vehicle

A Co Londonderry operator was convicted at Magherafelt Magistrates Court and fined a total of £500. DVA Enforcement Officers were involved in a goods vehicle operation in the Moneymore area when a Volvo 4 axle large goods vehicle was observed and stopped.

The vehicle was directed to Toome DVA Weighbridge for a compliance check. The vehicle was plated for a gross vehicle weight of 32,000Kgs. When weighed it was found to be overloaded by 1,250Kgs giving a total weight of 33,250Kgs.

Regulations require the gross vehicle weight shown on a plate fitted to a vehicle, should not be exceeded. The driver was asked to produce his driver CPC card, which he was unable to do.

The Regulations require Professional Drivers of vehicles exceeding 3500Kgs to produce evidence of a valid CPC card on request.

Overloaded vehicle was in a ‘dangerous condition’

A County Down operator was convicted at Belfast Magistrates Court and fined a total of £1,000 for a number of offences. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement Officers were conducting compliance checks in the Greater Belfast area.

A 2 axle Volkswagen Crafter Luton bodied goods vehicle was observed on the M1 East-bound in the vicinity of the motorway services. The vehicle appeared heavily laden and was subsequently directed to the Belfast public weighbridge for inspection. When the vehicle weight was checked, it was found to weigh 5,600 Kg’s, 2,100 Kg’s more than the legally plated weight of 3,500 Kg’s. On examination, the suspension of the vehicle was found to have no further travel, the rear tyres load ratings where exceeded, resulting in the vehicle being in a dangerous condition, a danger to the vehicle occupants and other road users.

When Department records were checked it was noted the driver held a provisional driver’s licence that expired in 2005, he had never completed a driving test to obtain a driver’s licence and he therefore was not covered with insurance, as later confirmed by the insurance company. The vehicle had two occupants, the driver and a passenger who held a valid driving licence. It is a reasonable statement to conclude as employees of the company who were acting on behalf of the company, they should have been appropriately instructed, aware of the vehicles payload and trained to load the vehicle within the legal limitsinvestigations has found they were not.

Tachograph offences, driver card, restricted licence

A County Armagh operator was convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £700. The conviction arose when DVA Enforcement Officers were conducting compliance checks in the Greater Belfast area when a 4 axle Volvo large goods vehicle, was observed on A12 Westlink.

The vehicle was directed to the Belfast public weighbridge for inspection. It was noted the Goods vehicle Operator’s licence was restricted allowing the carriage of the licence holders own goods. However, it did not cover use for hire and reward.

ASDA begins introducing 167 Tiger Trailers moving decks

UK supermarket ASDA is midway through welcoming to its fleet an initial order of 167 new vehicles manufactured by Tiger Trailers, comprised 147 tri-axle box van moving deck double decks for UK operation, and 20 for the retailer’s Northern Ireland ferry-use operations.

Tiger’s new trailer solution for Asda provides up to a 44-pallet carrying capacity, and incorporates a ¾ length moving deck for versatility, powered by the Cheshire manufacturer’s in-house, 4-ram hydraulic system. The three vibrant livery variations and memorable slogans make the new fleet assets an eye-catching sight on the road.

Peter Hey, Asda’s fleet procurement manager, says: “We have collaborated with the Tiger team individuals in previous companies, but this order is the first time that we have worked with them directly at Tiger. Engagement with the Tiger team was excellent from the outset, including a number of visitors to their factory, and we are extremely happy with the trailers that they have produced. Tiger’s support has been fantastic throughout.”

Tiger Trailers is known for manufacturing bespoke articulated trailers and rigid bodywork

to meet its end users’ unique requirements, and Asda’s new double deck trailers have been designed for transporting both cages and UK pallets. Safety for its people and others is paramount for the supermarket, as evidenced by the fitment of a large number of warning and information labels to its trailers, along with cycle safety notices. A ferry trestle support is built into the neck area for Asda’s RoRo operations, air suspension and a roll

stability programme enhance cargo integrity, and the controls for the moving deck are positioned to enable operation from both ground level and from store loading bays.

Darren Holland, Tiger Trailers’ Sales Director, comments: “Working with Peter and the Asda team has been a great experience. From the initial on-site meetings to view their operations to sharing the 3D model of their precise trailer at the factory and finally presenting the trailer in our showroom to the Asda team we are really happy with the final product. These trailers will be servicing the Asda ambient operation, and we look forward to working with the Asda team in the future.”

A significant proportion of Asda’s 167 new Tiger-built double deck trailers can already be seen in service on the road, primarily operating from the supermarket’s ambient distribution centres that are situated throughout the UK, along with its Irish Sea Carriers routes.

MAN BOARD MAKING SURE THE ‘LION IS ROARING’ ACROSS THE UK

MAN has underlined its total commitment to decarbonisation, and unveiled the steps it will take to make this happen at a recent press conference attended by members of the company’s Board of Directors.

Attending this special event at MAN UK headquarters in Swindon were MAN Chief Executive Officer Alexander VIaskamp, Friedrich-W. Baumann Head of Sales, and Stefan Thyssen, MD MAN Truck and Bus UK.

The Board, who were on a special ‘Go and See’ trip looking at their current UK operations and meeting staff around the UK – including their 100 colleagues at the Swindon headquarters – gave the assembled press a brief overview of where the company is in 2024 and their exciting plans for the future. These plans include further developing their electric trucks, developing autonomous vehicles and working with customers to help them along on their decarbonisation journey.

Alexander Vlaskamp, Chief Executive Officer said the board were delighted to be in Swindon meeting staff and viewing operations. “We are making sure that the lion is roaring with all of our products.”

Mr VIaskamp explained that MAN is a proud partner of the Traton Group (which includes Scania, MAN, Navistar (USA) and Volkswagen) and the group is advancing together and taking notice of each other’s capabilities.

The CEO said they are moving forward as a group to make the big transformation as they see it in three main spheres:

1 – Digitalisation = the connectivity of our trucks, buses and vans.

2 – Sustainable Transportation – i.e. electrification. We are moving forward, and are making big investments investing 2.6 billion to 2026 in service and development across the whole group

engines

Mr Vlaskamp also explained how Traton have been establishing Traton Financial Services – to make sure they are supporting their customers here in the UK in terms of financing.

The press conference also heard that MAN have been granted the first licence to operate autonomous vehicles in Europe. “We started that last week in Germany... but it is only the start of a long-term journey.”

After going through some ‘experiences’ over the past four years MAN, as a brand and a company, is back on track. There has also been restructuring of the business to make sure it

has the ability to finance all these changes it wants to implement in the coming years. MAN reported that they delivered 116,000 vehicles to customers last year – and can report a 1 billion euro result to invest in the future. ‘A big thank you to the team’ “When it comes to the future, the future has to be sustainable. It must be said we are part of the problem - the trucking industry / the transportation industry as a whole, responsible for emitting 14% of the global CO2 emissions. “We are part of the problem – but we can also be part of the solution, and that solution we have been working on very hard” continued Mr Vlaskamp.

50 EXPORT&FREIGHT PRESS CONFERENCE WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
3 – Conventional business / conventional driveline and – we also investing here! Friedrich-W. Baumann MAN Head of Sales, Stefan Thyssen, MD MAN Truck and Bus UK and Alexander Vlaskamp, Chief Executive Officer MAN Truck and Bus.

Developing their battery/electric offering MAN Launched their ETGX truck in Hanover in 2022, and so far 1400 orders are in the books.

“I would say we have done our homework when it comes to our product – extensive work of testing. We are also building our own battery packs – which we do in our plant in Nuremberg

“The product is there – but the successful recipe for decarbonisation doesn’t start and finish with the manufacturer. It’s starts with a systemic approach to make sure we are building up the infrastructure.

Mr Viaskamp said this involved developing mega-charging for their trucks – by 2025 MAN will have up to 1 megawatt of recharging; allowing you can charge from 10% to 80% in half an hour.

But he said they need the help of Governments to make sure they can move sustainability of transport to the next phase, and that the power has to be green manufactured power – from wind and solar farms.

Back to the customer – they have to make the decision to change, and need to know total cost of operation. They need to know they can invest in this truck – which is more expensive – and that it will work for them and their business.

MAN also want to do first by example, and have invested as Traton Group – half a billion euro with Volvo – to develop

charging stations in Netherlands and France along the public highways.

Friedrich-W. Baumann Head of Sales, asks ‘how to we help our customers – to make the switch??

Mr Baumann said they are already sitting down with customers, helping them to think about the change for their operations.

“Many are thinking - how to we best do this. And many hauliers/businesses are already under pressure from their customers to make the switch (to battery/electric)” continued Mr Baumann.

The Head of Sales Director said MAN are constantly learning saying how they are aware they need to be able to repair batteries – and that currently there are 2 pilot locations where they can do these type of repairs. And that MAN has invested heavily

getting mechanics trained and certified.

There will be a location in the UK where batteries can be repaired, confirmed Mr Baumann.

“I am in this industry for thirty years, but there is probably more happening in the past 3 years than in the previous 27….

“I find it very exciting – not everything will work from the get-go… it will be an exciting time. We have to be accountable to what we are doing to the environment

“By 2030 – 50% of what we put on the road will be zero emissions – I think that’s right for our industry.”

Stefan Thyssen, MD MAN Truck and Bus UK said MAN currently have 66 locations across the UK – but that is not enough.

“We need to grow out network, to find more locations – to invest more = we need more capacity.

“We also need to refresh our locations across our network – by 2025 all locations will be ready for electric vehicles.

“Decarbonisation is a task for us all – also a task for us as MAN UK. We take our responsibility seriously. Since 2023 – all our electricity is green for instance.

“The future is super-exciting” concluded Mr Thyssen.

IRWIN MAKES HISTORY IN THE SUN AT THE 2024 BRIGGS EQUIPMENT

NORTH WEST 200

A weather forecast for a day of blazing sunshine saw a massive crowd descend upon the north coast on Saturday, May 11 for the principle race day of the 2024 Briggs Equipment North West 200.

The race fans didn’t go home disappointed after a day of recordbreaking action around the 8.9 mile Triangle course as Glenn Irwin won his 11th consecutive Superbike race to become the event’s most successful premier class competitor.

Irwin had already equalled the tally of nine Superbike wins shared by existing record holders, the late Joey Dunlop and Michael Rutter, during Thursday evening’s Briggs Equipment Superbike race. Victories in both the Anchor Bar and Merrow Hotel and Spa sponsored events on the PBM Hager Ducati during Saturday made it a hat-trick of Superbike wins at this year’s event for the Carrtickfergus rider.. During the Anchor Bar six lapper

Irwin led past the pits on five of the six laps before eventually taking the chequered flag by 0.382 seconds from Todd. Michael Dunlop (MD Racing Honda) finished over 19 seconds behind the winner after over-shooting Magherabouy chicane as Irwin set the fastest lap of the race at 124.854mph.

“Although it feels wrong to take a record from Joey Dunlop, I’m incredibly proud to do it.” Irwin said after clinching a record he had set his sights on brreaking.

Irwin’s Superbike domination continued in the Merrow Hotel and Spa event as he made it three wins from three starts on the PBM Hager Ducati at this year’s North West after another tough

battle with Todd. This time the leading pair had Honda Racing’s Dean Harrison for company.

Todd led the first two laps past the grandstand before Irwin moved in front at Juniper as the pair continued to duel throughout the six laps. Todd reclaimed the lead at Station but Irwin got his nose in front again at University and held it until the chequered flag, winning by 0.464 seconds from Todd with Harrison a further 2.9 seconds further back to complete his Superbike hat-trick.

Jubilant celebrations duly followed his 11th consecutive NW200 victory in the premier class.

“I love this event.” Irwin smiled.

“To take a hat-trick feels really,

really special. Dreams do come true and to win eleven Superbike races at the NW200, and eleven in a row, is awesome. With the hat-trick here and at Oulton Park last weekend, it’s been my best week in racing.”

Peter Hickman also claimed a Saturday double in the Milltown Service Station and JM Paterson Supertwin races, starting from pole position on his Swan Racing Yamaha.

In the opening encounter, Hickman got the better of Richard Cooper (Jack Reid Cars/KMR Kawasaki) 0.489 seconds after a race long battle. Mike Browne claimed his first NW200 rostrum finish after finishing third on a Scott Racing Aprilia by 10.4 seconds from Jeremy

McWilliams (IFS/Bayview Paton).

In the second Twins encounter Hickman and Cooper finished first and second again after Hickman dived up the inside of the Nottingham rider at Metropole on the final lap and held on to win by 0.855 seconds. This time it was McWilliams in third, 5.2 seconds behind Cooper with Browne in fourth, 6.1 seconds further back.

The Tides Restaurant Supersport six lapper produced a thrilling battle between Davey Todd and Richard Cooper (Russell Racing/BPE Yamaha) with Michael Dunlop and Mike Browne getting into the mix. Todd went on to make it a 2024 NW200 hat-trick with a 1.57 second victory in the CP Hire Superstock race on his Milwaukee BMW

over runner-up, Peter Hickman on the PHR Performance BMW. But perhaps the biggest cheer of a wonderful weekend of road racing was reserved for third-placed finisher, John McGuinness. The 52 year old Honda Racing veteran made his debut at the north coast event 30 years ago and has built a huge following amongst Irish race fans during those three decades. Hillier and McGuinness were battling for fourth spot when Harrison retired and McGuinness inherited the final podium position.

As the huge crowds that had lined the coast road throughout a race week of sunshine began to head home, Davey Todd was declared the Man of the Meeting, winning the Robert Dunlop trophy.

The Around a Pound sponsored top newcomer was South Africa’s, Allann John Venter and Erno Kostamo received the Ramore Restaurant Best Overseas competitor award. The Station

Best Team trophy went to Milwaukee BMW as Peter Hickman received the Spirit of the North West 200 award which was sponsored by Domino’s Pizza in memory of the late Daley Mathison.

Toga Freight Services acquires London based Irish Sea Logistics Ltd

Dublin headquartered Toga Freight Services Ltd has acquired the equity of Irish Sea Logistics Ltd, a London based freight forwarder. The deal represents the 2nd acquisition by Toga Freight Services Ltd in 2024.

Irish Sea Logistics Ltd, as the name suggests, is a specialist forwarder operating between Great Britain and Ireland and is based in Erith, Kent and operates from a customs TSF Bonded warehouse from where groupage trailers are loaded daily to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Toga Freight Services was founded in 1978 by Peter Toner and Martin Gately, hence the name “Toga”, being a combination of the start of their surnames. The business was acquired by the current board consisting of Robert Dickinson, Muriel Corish and Darragh Toner via a management buy out in the summer of 2023. Since then, the business has embarked on an aggressive strategy of growth, acquisition and development in new markets. Speaking of this latest acquisition, Robert Dickinson, Managing Director of Toga Freight Services Ltd commented: “We are delighted to welcome Ian, Tisha and the team in Erith into the Toga Family. The

core business they have will fit very well with other Toga Group business that we have in the area and the combined volumes for Ireland from the Southeast is a very exciting proposition for us”. He continues: “There is a customs team in place in Erith that can now work closely with our own expanding team in Toga Customs in Dublin to develop the land bridge option for the large volume of European cargo we already control, bound

for Ireland. This deal is the second of a number of acquisitions that are planned in 2024 in the UK and Ireland and is a key part of our globalisation strategy to expand our service offering to our 11,500 customers, we are still looking for additional opportunities”.

Darragh Toner, Operations Director of Toga Group said: “We are fortunate to have been able to acquire Irish Sea Logistics Ltd and

to provide services in Ireland to their customers and for them to help us with our large volume of daily collections in the UK. Our network of European partners is also excited to be able to work with a Toga Group company in the UK, which will share the culture and customer-centric philosophy of the Dublin parent company”.

Added Toga Group’s Finance Director, Muriel Corish: “Rarely in business is there such an obvious fit between two companies and I’m thrilled this connection has now been completed. There is a unique opportunity for Irish Sea Logistics to rapidly increase their volumes to Ireland as well as handle the land bridge traffic for Toga Dublin from mainland Europe. We have had the Brexit challenges conquered for a few years at this stage, so we’re looking forward to helping Irish Sea Logistics’ customers to grow their flows to Ireland also”.

Ian Robery, General Manager of the Erith operation agrees: “To merge in with the Toga operation is an obvious next step. The wide partner connections they have across Europe, the UK and of course Ireland is unsurpassed, so we are thrilled to be allowed access to such exclusive freight routes. We can now sell east and west from Erith and genuinely believe that our services are amongst the best available.”.

Sovereign Transport Services (STS) adds more MAN Trucks to its Operation

Liverpool-based Sovereign Transport Services (STS) has recently added three new MAN TGX 26.520 tractors to its growing fleet.

The new vehicles, in the form of 520 hp 6x2 tractors with range-topping GX cabs, all support the Company’s striking new livery. Each of the vehicles will pull New high-cube 15-meter double trailers, delivering goods across the UK through the Palletways consortium.

Founded by Steve Radcliffe in 1999 Sovereign Transport Services began life in Liverpool with one 7.5 tonne vehicle, delivering 10 pallets a day. Today with a fleet of 60 vehicles, ranging from a 3.5-tonne van through to 44-tonne double deck trailers capable of holding 50 pallets, Sovereign Transport Services delivers over a750,000 pallets a year Nationwide. All four new vehicles are powered by MAN’s latest generation Euro6E compliant,

six-cylinder D26, 12.4 litre, 520 hp (375 kW) engines. This latest generation lowconsumption engine range has proven to be gentle on service costs as well as frugal

on fuel. Not only are these engines proving more efficient than their predecessors, but they are also lighter, therefore, improving payload efficiency, which in turn positively impacts a fleet’s total cost of ownership (TCO) and vehicle whole-life performance.

Adam Radcliffe, Managing Director of Sovereign Transport Services, said: “We’ve established a great relationship with both MAN Truck & Bus, our local Sales Executive Tony Davidson and our local dealership, MAN Truck & Bus Preston. All parties involved recognise the importance of our operation and how their high level of service greatly impacts our day to day operation. I’m delighted to say that with MAN’s can do partnering approach and their consistent focus on customer service, we very much appreciated the high level of wrap-around care they deliver.”

TEXACO HVO BEST SOLUTION FOR LOWERING CARBON EMISSIONS

WR Kennedy & Co supplying NI Transport sector since 1962

As Texaco distributors since 1962, WR Kennedy & Co have supplied Northern Ireland’s transport sector from the outset, from its beginnings supplying fuels and lubricants to the road haulage sector, to expanding its presence in the industry to servicing harbours and airports.

With the transport sector contributing over 20 per cent of all Northern Ireland’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, there is mounting pressure for the industry to decarbonise, both externally, via legislative changes, and internally, with ESG strategies increasingly bringing businesses’ environmental commitments to the forefront of their operations.

In this context of an evolving regulatory landscape, coupled with corporate sustainability goals, WR Kennedy believe that Texaco HVO is the best here and now solution for businesses seeking to immediately lower their carbon emissions. 100% renewable and sustainable, it allows for an immediate reduction of up to 90% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular diesel. As a drop-in replacement for use in for existing diesel engines, with a wide range of OEM approvals, it can be used immediately, without requiring any modifications to plant or fleet.

Furthermore, as Texaco HVO is fully compatible and mixable at any percentage with traditional diesel, it can be dropped in to current fuel supplies. This makes Texaco HVO a low-risk solution, allowing fleets to transition to a low-carbon future rapidly, while assisting businesses in achieving their emissions targets without any disruption to operations.

While Texaco HVO currently carries a moderate premium over regular diesel, as demand and supply increase, this disparity is anticipated to decrease significantly. In the short-term, much of the premium that HVO currently stands at will be offset by an average decrease of 10% in fleets’ AdBlue consumption when compared to running on regular diesel.

As a drop-in solution negating the need for capital expenditure or investment, Texaco HVO offers the most commercially viable route towards decarbonisation, without disruption or delay.

Companies that have endorsed HVO for their vehicles include:

DAF

Renault

Mercedes-Benz

Iveco

Peugeot

Citroen

Mercedes-Benz

Volvo

Caterpillar

Since 2023, WR Kennedy & Co have facilitated trials of Texaco HVO for businesses across Northern Ireland, spanning a multitude of industries, including transport, construction, manufacturing, and food production.

To organise a trial of Texaco HVO for your plant or fleet, please get in touch with WR Kennedy & Co today on 02825656616.

BELFAST INTERNATIONAL CUTS VEHICLE EMISSIONS WITH HVO SWITCH

Belfast International Airport is reducing its carbon emissions by 90%, swapping fuel in airport vehicles for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). The switch will save more than 290 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Belfast International Airport, member of the VINCI Airports network, will cut its carbon emissions from diesel vehicles and emergency standby generators by 90% by swapping the fuel for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). The HVO fuel currently being used at Belfast International Airport is Texaco HVO supplied to the airport by WR Kennedy & Co, Texaco distributors since 1962.

The move is part of VINCI’s wider sustainability ambitions to achieve net zero emission for the entire network by 2050. HVO is a lowcarbon biofuel made from plant waste, oils and fats making it a more sustainable and lowercarbon alternative to diesel.

All diesel vehicles will now be powered by HVO until they are retired from use and then replaced by electric vehicles or other low

carbon alternatives as part of the Airport’s sustainability policy.

The Airport fleet includes fire appliances, airside operations vehicles and car park minibuses as well as emergency power generation, which is used during

low visibility procedures.

Following a successful trial in 2023, results indicated that using HVO had no impact on the performance of vehicles, including fire engines, which still have the capacity to respond to

emergency calls anywhere on the airfield within three minutes.

Kevin Napier, Compliance Manager, Belfast International Airport, said: “The introduction of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil to power our diesel vehicles and emergency power generation is a significant step along our journey to decarbonise the airport and meet our 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.

“From the buses that pick passengers up from car parks, to operations vehicles that patrol the airfield, HVO is now being used to fuel vehicles throughout the airport. USEFUL USES FOR USED?

A ‘secret’ solution to finance and legislative pressures facing operators everywhere.

The oft-quoted Chinese curse, ‘May you live in interesting times’, could almost have been invented for our current age. While economic conditions are reportedly improving, there’s little doubt that tremendously ‘interesting’ challenges remain!

Not least, the potential for a different political party, with a very different approach to life, in power after the next elections. Such changes may well result in short-term financial uncertainty, accompanied by impacts on market stability – and our transport sector is likely to be the first to feel the effects. Further afield, the recently re-elected London Mayor is marching on with his ULEZ plans, regardless of the potential effects they might have on local distribution and the supply chain. Other major conurbation leaders must be watching the London scenario with interest, not least because of the local authority income stream such measures create!

All this, of course, as we still battle the lingering after-effects of Covid, of vehicle shortages, of the Ukraine war and of looming operating changes as the drive to zero emissions quickens. It sounds a little downbeat, that’s for sure, but Export & Freight talked recently to used vehicle specialists, Dawsongroup. They offered some more positive views, pointing out the important role used trucks and trailers play in providing a solution to the issues faced by many operators.

MAKING USED WORK

‘It’s almost like a closely guarded secret,” says Dawsongroup’s James Hunter, who oversees

the company’s truck and trailer used sales arm, Dawsondirect. “We deliver well over 2,500 previously owned trucks and trailers into the sector every year, yet only a small number of operators are taking advantage of the quality and value they represent.

“Because Dawsongroup is a major contract hire, leasing and rental business, we know the full history of each vehicle we put onto the Dawsondirect forecourt. We’ve been responsible for all their servicing, routine inspections and any other work needed to keep them in top order for our customers. The benefits of that knowledge move on with them when they’re sold to their new owners.”

That Dawsondirect ‘forecourt’ is of course increasingly online, but it still has its own dedicated sales managers, dealing with all enquiries, sales and deliveries.

Importantly, with its in-depth knowledge of the hire business, Dawsondirect is very organised in the financing and sale of any vehicle on its fleet.

A number of options are available, including one which allows operators to pay low monthly charges, eventually leading to full ownership – a current example being an offer on a number of 18 and 68-plate 6x2 MAN tractor units at £125 per week.

USED ‘AS GOOD AS NEW’!

So, what exactly do operators get when they take a serious look at the used market? At Dawsondirect, they get: a recent vehicle service; complete documented service and maintenance history; minimum 6-month MOT; 3-month limited drive-line warranty; multi-point check/ tyres to a minimum 6mm tread; mileage of under 150,000km per year; LOLER inspections and certificates; and a full pre-delivery/collection valet. James Hunter again, “We accept that some operators haven’t been able to find used vehicles that fit with their own standards of quality and reliability. We recognised this as an industry issue many years ago and started out to build a business that swept away these potential problems, once and for all. Today, Dawsondirect fulfils that role and focuses on providing customer satisfaction and quality trucks and trailers at prices that make sense in these ‘interesting times’”. Talking with converts to the Dawsondirect way, we have seen that, for many people, given the quality and cost of the modern vehicles on offer, used can now be ‘as good as new’. A great antidote to current short and medium uncertainties.

TRUCK INDUSTRY GEARING UP FOR RTX 2024 AT STONELEIGH

As we go to the printers with May/June’s edition of Export and Freight magazine, many will be packing up their equipment and getting ready for the journey to Stoneleigh for this year’s Road Transport Expo – affectionately known as RTX.

Over the past few years, RTX has become the ‘go to’ show for the truck, transport and logistics industry for this event – an industry specific event that’s all about the truck, and everything related to it, and this year is going to be bigger and better than ever before.

Taking place at NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire from 4-6 June, Road Transport Expo (RTX) is a free-to-attend event for anyone involved with the running of an HGV fleet. This prestigious annual event provides the opportunity to meet more than 250 exhibitors in one venue. There will be loads happening across the three days of this year’s show – which the organisers predict will be the biggest show yet. At 2024 RTX you can view the latest trucks, trailers, tyres, tippers, tankers, safety equipment and much, much more. RTX are delighted to have not only all the major truck manufacturers in attendance, but also a some new entrants including Sany e Trucks, HVS and Volta Commercial vehicles joining the likes of Ford, Renault, MAN, Volvo, Iveco, DAF and Scania.

Products ranging from the smallest consumables through to the largest trailers can be found at the show, providing everything you need to kit out your fleet at one huge venue.

If you want to test drive the latest trucks on the market, a selection of vehicles from the leading manufacturers will be available for supervised demonstration drives. From Euro-6 diesel models through to battery-electric and biogas – all the latest technology and the very latest from the biggest names in the business will be on show to get up and personal with.

You’ll also be able to attend informative sessions at the show’s Knowledge Zone covering key topics such as vehicle compliance, technology innovation and fleet decarbonisation.

RTX is also a fabulous networking opportunity to catch up with industry peers or meet those all-important new business contacts.

RTX takes place from 4-6 June at NAEC Stoneleigh and you can register online for an entry ticket at roadtransportexpo.co.uk.

KNOWLEDGE ZONE

If you are responsible for the safe and compliant management of a HGV fleet, then the Road Transport Expo (RTX) Knowledge Zone seminar sessions will be a must-attend event for you.

Taking place across all three days of the free-to-attend summer trade show, the Knowledge Zone will bring together road transport experts to explore essential topics such as truck safety and technology, fleet decarbonisation, vehicle development, industry trials and much more.

The Knowledge Zone is located at the heart of the venue, with an easy-access layout enabling you to drop in and out of those sessions relevant to you while exploring the rest of the show.

The RTX Knowledge Zone will bring together leading experts from across the industry.

RENAULT SHOWS COMMITMENT TO DECARBONISING TRANSPORT AT RTX

Renault Trucks is looking forward to welcoming visitors to Stand B4 at Road Transport Expo with a vehicle line-up that spotlights its strategic commitment to decarbonising transport, including the latest E-Tech vehicles from 3.1 to 44 tonne and HVO compatible diesel range.

Alongside Renault Trucks’ vehicle display, which debuts the first right hand drive E-Tech 4x2 tractor unit as well as T and T High, Construction and Van, its knowledgeable team of experts will be on hand to offer comprehensive details and guidance on vehicles and transport solutions, including the decarbonisation journey. Additionally, a T High with Turbo Compound engine, and a fully electric E-Tech D rigid distribution vehicle will be available on the Ride & Drive area of the show. Finally, football fans won’t want to miss the opportunity to test their goal scoring skills with Renault Trucks’ exclusive ‘Put it in the Mixer’ competition for the chance to win a Samsung 65” TV, only on Stand B4!

DAF TRUCKS – CLEANER AND SAFER AT RTX ‘24

DAF Trucks is heading indoors for the 2024 edition of RTX, moving away from its traditional location outside at Stoneleigh. The UK market leader’s line-up of three vehicles shines a light on the company’s class-leading position on vehicle safety and environmentally sustainable power technology.

XB ELECTRIC

First up, the new DAF XB Electric. This 19-tonne rigid comes with a 190kW motor and 210kWh battery. The zeroemissions model was launched at the end of ’23 alongside its diesel-powered

XB stable-mates, together completing the New Generation DAF range. The XB also supercedes the incredibly successful DAF LF, designed and built in Britian at Leyland Trucks, and arguably the UK’s best selling truck range ever. Larger XD Electric and XF Electric models

go into production soon, again at Leyland Trucks. These latter models will participate in the UK Government’s and Innovate UK’s Zero Emission HGV & Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme. ZEHID will see fleets comprised primarily of battery electric trucks rolled-out through

64 EXPORT&FREIGHT

four consortia, each with a responsibility to demonstrate the efficacy of higher weight / longer-distance zero emissions operations.

XD 450 WITH 5-STAR DVS RATING

Arguably the centrepiece of the DAF stand at RTX is a 44-tonne GCW XD 450 threeaxle tractor, specified to achieve a 5-Star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) rating – the highest rating available ahead of the DVS mandate for 3-Star compliance in October this year. The full 5-Star rating is delivered with DAF’s low-mounted XD cab featuring a deep winscreen and ‘Vision Dash’, and deep side windows to achieve an impressively low ‘belt-line’.

A large kerb-view window in the passenger door offers an uninterrupted view of cyclists and other vulnerable road users, while the DAF Digital Vision System removes key blindspots often experienced with conventional mirrors. Moreover, the DAF Corner Vision system replaces Class-V and Class-VI mirrors

to give a 285-degree view across the vehicle’s front and nearside via an easy-to-interpret monitor mounted inside the cab A-pillar. The vehicle is also equipped with a comprehensire suite of safety systems as part of the General Safety Regulation, which is soon to be mandated for new registrations in the EU and Northern Ireland.

EFFICIENCY CHAMPION

DAF’s third exhibit is an XG 450 FTG 6x2 three-axle ‘Efficiency Champion’ tractor–a special edition that showcases the company’s most fuel-efficient specifcations availabile in XD, XF, XG and XG+ series, and earning prestigious efficiency awards from influential German trade press titles. The carefully selected specification choices focus on cab aerodynamics, lowrolling-resistance tyres, Predictive Cruise Control and latest ADAS equipment, each contributing marginal gains and combining to deliver fantastic overall efficiency.

HVO

With customers’ total cost of operation very much in mind, especially with respect to the industry’s switch to cleaner drive technologies, DAF Trucks has always been a strong advocate of hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO). The alternative to diesel offers an immediate solution for operators serious about cutting emissions, whereby its 90% reduction in CO2 emissions from well-to-wheel delivers a dramatic, positive impact on cutting overall emissions. Furthermore, its ‘drop-in’ appeal means operators incur no capital costs and their vehicles require no modifications. HVO can simply be used as a diesel alternative, or blended with existing diesel, and, for DAF operators, it can be used right across the DAF ICE product range. DAF’s current ICE vehicle demonstration fleet is powered exclusively with HVO. Indeed, increasing numbers of DAF operators are also using HVO in their fleets.

TIGER TRAILERS CONFIRMED AS EXHIBITORS AT RTX AGAIN FOR 2024

Leading trailer and rigid bodywork manufacturer, Tiger Trailers, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a supplier to the transport sector, has confirmed its attendance again at Road Transport Expo (RTX) for the second year running.

Tiger’s stand at RTX 2023 was well-received for its informal pub beer garden vibe, and visitors to the show this month will be greeted by the same relaxed design and welcoming team.

Previously located up near the Ride & Drive facility, Tiger Trailers’ stand at RTX 2024 is now more central, positioned just below the Grand Ring along one of the primary walkways near to the truck OEMs. Tiger Ted, the firm’s mascot, will once again be present on the stand at RTX, and looks forward to posing for selfies with visitors to the show.

Vehicle products Tiger will be exhibiting on its stand this year include: a moving deck double deck LST sporting a leading retailer’s livery; two rigids, one a box van, the other a curtainsider; a twin-axle urban refrigerated trailer.

The choice of products on Tiger’s stand at RTX reflects the manufacturer’s strong customer demand for its rigid bodywork and temperaturecontrolled solutions. It has been offering the latter since 2020 and the Tiger Siberian range now includes double deck reefers and rigid fridges, from 3.5t to 32t. Orders for the firm’s ambient moving deck double deck trailers remain buoyant, based on Tiger’s proven in-house hydraulic ram system, with the LST variant on display tying in with the market trend of

operators seeking to maximise capacity while reducing journeys and therefore CO2 emissions.

“Road Transport Expo is unarguably the largest and most exciting general truck, trailer and related show to be seen at and to attend, so it was a quick decision for us to commit to exhibiting again in 2024”, comments Tiger Trailers’ Managing Director, Ed Booth.

Placing significant emphasis on communities, Tiger Trailers launched the Tiger Safety Team in 2021, since which it has delivered its potentially life-saving ‘STOP, LOOK, BE SEEN’ HGV road safety campaign to over 1,200 school children.

The firm is a member of ‘Women In Transport’, a bronze patron sponsor of Veterans Into Logistics, provides work experience to young people through The Prince’s Trust, collaborates with emergency services such as hosting ‘Biker Down!’ motorcycle safety sessions, and regularly supports charities through its membership of Cheshire Community Foundation.

The environment and sustainability also matter greatly to Tiger Trailers, evidenced through a tree being planted for each product it sells, along with a 640kW array of solar panels on its modern factory’s roof, vehicle chargers in its car park, and a supply chain team focussed on sourcing sustainable, lightweight or recyclable materials where possible.

“With an excellent stand location, exciting products on display, and our team ready to warmly welcome visitors to our stand to not only network and talk about our products but also to learn about the latest initiatives our busy CSR team is involved with in the community, we’re very much looking forward to exhibiting at RTX 2024”, Booth adds.

Visit Tiger Trailers on stand Y1a at Road Transport Expo 2024, from the 4th to the 6th of June at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

BPW DRIVING INNOVATION AT RTX 2024

BPW Limited is gearing up for its appearance at this year’s Road Transport Expo (RTX) which is taking place at Stoneleigh Park from June 4 – 6. Highlights at this year’s show include:

BPW ECO HUB SYSTEM:

On stand B19 in the blue zone, BPW is showcasing its ECO Hub system. Developed 30 years ago, the ECO Hub has remained a symbol of excellence, with its innovative details offering a boost in terms of service and economy. Engineered with low-maintenance features in mind, the ECO Hub allows simple and rapid removal of the entire wheel, which is based on the ‘Formula 1 style principle.’ To show how easy and simple the hub is to remove, BPW technical engineers will be delivering live demonstrations throughout the show.

BPW CARGOMASTER:

BPW’s patented CargoMaster is a strap lift system designed to secure loads safely and directly to the vehicle chassis. This user-friendly system meets both pallet network and automotive delivery demands and reduces loading and unloading

times, enabling faster deliveries. CargoMaster’s versatility means it is suitable for both uniform and unusually shaped loads and can be fitted to both single and doubledeck trailers. Not only does the system help to prevent a damaged load, but it can also reduce the risk of health and safety infringements or an incident relating to poorly secured loads. More importantly, the driver no longer needs to climb onto the trailer or throw straps over the load to secure it. CargoMaster, which can be retrofitted, complies with DVSA load-securing guidelines.

BPW AIRSAVE:

The BPW tyre inflation system, AirSave, continuously monitors and regulates tyre pressure while on the move, significantly enhancing road safety. AirSave tracks and adjusts tyre pressure to the desired level during travel, reducing unnecessary expenses arising from worn-out tyres or roadside prohibitions due to under-inflated tyres. AirSave will activate at a pressure deviation as low as 0.2 bar. Should the pressure deviate significantly, for example, in the case of tyre damage, drivers will be alerted by a warning light,

allowing them to drive safely to a service station rather than stopping on the side of a road.

BPW IDEM TELEMATICS:

BPW’s telematics experts will also be on hand to discuss all things telematics, including the Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS). With the ability to monitor in-service braking performance and generate real-time data reports, EBPMS can be presented during safety inspections and could be used instead of a roller brake test. To enhance fleet management, fleet operators can identify potential braking issues well before scheduled maintenance checks, preventing problems from escalating and causing prolonged downtime. This allows fleet managers to make more informed decisions regarding their trailers, leading to increased efficiency, improved safety, and reduced operating costs.

GREAT TO MEET YOU: DIESEL TECHNIC’S KEVIN PETRIE

Diesel Technic, and its brand DT Spare Parts have quietly been building a reputation as the go-to aftermarket supplier for high quality parts with excellent availability. As the company strengthens its sales team to increase customer service levels across the island of Ireland, we meet new Sales Manager, Kevin Petrie.

The sun is shining when we catch up with Kevin, who is just two weeks into his new job at Diesel Technic, and raring to go. While his role as Sales Manager covers the North, Scotland and Northern Ireland regions of the UK, he will also help support the team in Ireland and is keen to get started.

“In previous roles I’ve covered both Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland, so I know it well. The people are always so friendly, engaging and welcoming, and I’m looking forward to doing likewise again, meeting existing customers, welcoming new ones to the Diesel Technic brand, and building the long term relationships that make the difference,” he says. With over 30 years working within the automotive aftermarket, Kevin brings a wealth of experience to his role. By his own admission, sales wasn’t top of his career list at first, ‘but after a degree in Economics, I realised I didn’t fancy anything financial, and I fell into sales,” he adds. However, he quickly found that not only

did he enjoy it, he was pretty successful at it, too.

Initially working for a motor factor, Brown Brothers, in the Northeast of England, where he sold parts, tools, accessories and paint,

Kevin moved back home to Scotland taking a role with a direct selling consumable supplier. Here he took over responsibility for product training, key account management, and managing sales teams. Over the last 10 years, he has worked within the wholesale side of the trade, working with motor factors and distributors with tools and equipment suppliers, and commercial vehicle parts.

The job with Diesel Technic was the natural next step, as Kevin notes, ‘I knew the brand, of course, but even I was surprised at the breadth and depth of the range, and when I asked around my contacts, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, a really well regarded brand that’s good to do business with.”

Offering a complete range, from bumper to bumper, that stretches across all brands, from DAF to Volvo Trucks, Diesel Technic is one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive parts and accessories, supplying 150 countries worldwide with more than 43,000 different spare parts.

Kevin Petrie is appointed Sales Manager North and Northern Ireland, Diesel Technic UK.

“It’s also great to see that the DT Spare Parts brand is growing its range of LCV parts and accessories, too,” he adds, noting that last year the brand has doubled the number of LCV product reference to the UK to 3,000 available for next day deliver, with a further 3,000 available for express delivery from the company’s central warehouse in Germany. More recently, the company unveiled its enhanced eCommerce Partner Portal platform with extended functionality that significantly improves its use for distribution partners, making everyday work easier.

Reporting to Diesel Technic UK’s General Manager, Mark Todd, Kevin’s appointment is part of an ongoing development programme to grow the company’s customer base by investing in the very best talent to increase the support available to partners and end user fleets. He joins Luke Winship as Sales Manager Central Region, Peter Shufflebotham Sales Manager Southern Region and Jane Highton Pricing & Product Analyst in the Sales Team working out of Diesel Technic UK’s headquarters in Kingswinford, West Midlands. Additionally, Andrew Beaumont has also been

promoted to Head of Operations managing the logistics team and two new team members in Customer Service department, Lee Harris new Parts Specialist and Natalie Lawton Customer Service Coordinator.

As Kevin settles into his new role, what is he most looking forward to?

“In August, we’re heading to Diesel Technic’s HQ in Kirchdorf, where I’m hoping to meet the famous Parts Specialists, the brand’s very own YouTube stars, Lars and Kevin! Their expert workshop videos are a great source of hints and tips, and great fun too.

If you haven’t seen them, I can thoroughly recommend and you’re in for a treat!”

“But above all, I’m really looking forward to promoting the Diesel Technic brand and supporting our partners and their customers. Everything Ford do - is ‘DRIVEN BY YOU’

Which is your favourite Ford - so much choice?

Maybe I am showing my age, but when I think of Ford, the song that comes into my head straightaway is Brian May’s ‘Everything we do.. is driven by you.’

This was the soundtrack to a great Ford car TV ad from way back in 1991 (look it up online), and featured among other vehicles the iconic Ford Sierra (complete with anti-lock brakes), Ford Escorts and various Ford rally cars. Fast forward 33 years and the blue Oval is going from strength to strength with a line-up of vehicles that includes passenger cars and a large range of commercials including vans and pick-ups – all ready to be ‘driven by you’!

When it comes to choosing the right Ford vehicle, there is certainly no shortage of options to choose from.

With a wide range of models available, each offering unique features and capabilities, it can be difficult to decide which one is the best fit for your needs. Thanks to Dan Alcock and the team at Ford Pro I recently got a chance to get up close to a few of the newest Ford models at a special event at the world famous Belfry outside Birmingham.

Among the models that Ford brought along for the assembled press pack to take a closer look at included the full Ranger line-up, the new Transit Custom, and the new Transit and

Tourneo Courier. So which one was my favourite? Arguably one of the best pick-ups on the road today, and certainly one of the best looking is the Ford Ranger.

XL Single Cab: The XL single cab is the base model in the Ranger lineup, offering a simple and functional design perfect for those who need a reliable workhorse.

Tremor: The Tremor edition adds offroad capabilities to the Ranger, with features like a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, and skid plates for protection.

Wildtrak: The W ildtrak model offers a more luxurious interior with premium features and advanced technology, making it a great option for those looking for both comfort and performance.

Wildtrak X: The Wildtrak X adds even more style and convenience with additional exterior enhancements and innovative features.

Raptor: The Raptor is the ultimate offroad performance version of the Ranger, with a high-output turbocharged engine, FOX racing suspension, and aggressive styling that sets it apart from the rest. I got a chance to drive the top-of-the-line Raptor model and was hugely impressed from the moment I climbed in.

With its luxurious interior, wonderfully high and commanding driving position and huge amounts of technology at your fingertips

this is one impressive piece of machinery –and that’s before you even turn the key. The model I drove was the 3.0L V6 eco Boost 10 speed auto 4wd, and once you fire up the turbo-charged engine, and drive off you realise why these are such a popular vehicle, and the is simply top of the line when it comes to the Ford passenger range – think of the long gone Ford Scorpio from Brian May’s 1991 in terms of quality, luxury and road presence! Have you ever come across a machine that simply blew your mind with its capabilities and performance? For me, this is a Fabulous Machine.

The New Transit and Tourneo Courier: The new Transit and Tourneo Courier models offer versatility and practicality for those who need extra space for passengers or cargo. With comfortable seating, advanced safety features, and flexible storage options, these vehicles are perfect for family outings or business trips. Conclusion: With so many choices available in the Ford line-up, it’s clear that each model caters to different needs and preferences. Whether you prioritize luxury, performance, off-road capabilities, or practicality, there is a Ford vehicle that fits the bill.

THE NEW TRANSIT CUSTOM:

• Auto SWB: The new Transit Custom with automatic transmission and short wheelbase offers a smooth and effortless driving experience, ideal for city driving and small cargo loads.

• Manual LWB: For those who prefer a manual transmission and need more cargo space, the long wheelbase version of the Transit Custom provides ample room for larger loads while still delivering great fuel efficiency.

So, which is your favorite Ford?

With such a diverse range to choose from, the decision is ultimately up to you and your specific requirements – but I know which is mine!

INDUSTRY GATHERS TOGETHER FOR CV SHOW 2024

The transport industry once again gathered at the NEC in Birmingham at the end of April for the 2024 Commercial Vehicle (CV) Show.

This year Electric was certainly making its presence felt, with a number of manufacturers previewing electric vehicles as the drive to reducing carbon emissions continues right across the industry. The world of telematics and advanced safety systems also took up a large proportion of the stands inside the main hall. With more than 200 exhibitors under one roof, with every vehicle type on display, the CV Show was the perfect place to meet the future of the sector.

A number of the major manufacturers were in attendance at the three day show including Ford – who through Ford Pro revealed a new extended range option for the E-Transit.

Located in prime position just inside the entrance of the 2024 show, Ford’s stand included the exciting ‘Electric Avenue’ and featured an extensive range of vans and pickups with a range of powertrains available

Also at the show Renault had its electric line-up on display, with the recently-launched Master E-Tech one of the highlights on its stand. Located towards the back of the show with a massive, hugely impressive stand was Maxus, who unveiled two new electric vehicles at this year’s event – the Mifa 7 seven-seater MPV and eDeliver LCV.

As always, the CV Show is a great networking opportunity, and things were no different this year – with those from within the industry mingling with press and members of the public around all the shiny, floodlit stands. What this show does well is give a glimpse into the future – as many of the exhibitors are debuting new technology and bringing to CV their latest advances and updates to existing systems and products.

This year saw more than 30 industry experts and influencers taking to the

stage at an all-new seminar programme – aptly named ‘The Road Ahead’.

The packed conference-style event provided insight and analysis on everything from net zero fleets and regulation to workforce upskilling and wellbeing, with 18 speaker and panel sessions taking place across the three days of the show.

Plans to Create Green Shipping Corridors between Ireland & UK

The Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO), part of the Marine Institute, and Innovate UK hosted a networking reception in Dublin recently to advance their joint plans to create green shipping corridors between Ireland and the UK.

The event attracted maritime industry stakeholders who are interested in responding to this research call by constructing consortia which can drive progress in this important area of research. The call is co-funded by the Marine Institute and the UK Department of Transport and will be delivered by the IMDO and Innovate UK. Minister for Transport, Eamonn Ryan, said: “My Department welcomes the launch of the joint funding call from Marine Institute, the Irish Maritime Development Office and Innovate UK. This will produce detailed and valuable feasibility studies on green shipping corridors focused on routes across the Irish sea, between Ireland and the UK.

“The Clydebank Declaration was launched at COP26 in 2021, with Ireland as one of the initial signatories of the initiative. Clydebank was designed to drive forward to the decarbonisation targets set by the International Maritime Organisation in relations to green shipping. The launch of this funding call by Marine Institute and Innovate UK represents the first step towards meeting this ambition and demonstrates an innovative and collaborative approach to solving this issue, which I commend.”

Elin Burns, Deputy British Ambassador to Ireland also welcomed the research call and said: “The UK and Ireland are delighted to collaborate together to tackle one of the greatest challenges of our time, climate change. The UK has ambitious Net-Zero targets, and transport continues to be a sector which contributes significantly

to emissions. Green Shipping Corridors are key to demonstrating the development of technology, infrastructure, and regulations to promote industry adoption of zero emission technologies. The UK and Ireland’s partnership on this fund recognises our close maritime links across both trade, and travel, and demonstrates our commitment to supporting Green

Corridors between our countries.”

The call provides an opportunity for maritime industry stakeholders to consider how consortia might be formed to address the challenges of creating green shipping corridors across the Irish Sea. The call recognises the importance of trading and tourism links between Ireland and the UK and the imperative of reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry.

Commenting at the launch, Liam Lacey, Director of the Irish Maritime Development Office said: “The call is funded by the Marine Institute and UK Department of Transport to a value of €1m. It envisages the creation of consortia of ports, shipping companies and researchers and industry experts to undertake feasibility studies that will result in practical solutions being advanced that put shipping corridors between Ireland and the UK on a pathway to a greener future. This is an ambitious and valuable project that we expect to generate considerable industry interest and lots of innovative ideas.”

James Lovett, Innovation Lead for Future Maritime Technologies at Innovate UK, also commented: “These bilateral research collaborations are vital to make green shipping corridors a reality. The required technology and system developments cannot happen in isolation, which is why I’m pleased to see pioneering cooperation between the UK and Ireland. We’re looking forward to seeing the exciting research applications from UK-Ireland maritime industry consortia.”

Dennis Tetzlaff appointed Chief Operating Officer Fleet at Stena Line

Dennis Tetzlaff has taken up the role as Stena Line’s new Chief Operating Officer Fleet and part of the group management team.

Dennis Tetzlaff enters his new role with a wealth of experience, having worked in various professions within the shipping and cruise industry over the past two decades. Most recently, he comes from TUI Cruises, where he served as the Vice President Fleet Operations & Newbuild.

“I’m delighted to welcome Dennis to Stena Line. He brings extensive expertise from our

industry and possesses the kind of curiosity and leadership we need to be a resilient company for many years to come”, states Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line.

Dennis has a degree in nautical science and maritime transport from the University of Applied Sciences in Emden/Leer, Germany, but his career at sea already started at age 20, when he began working as a Deck cadet on a container ship in the Caribbean. After finishing his studies, he went back to working on container ships, before joining German cruise line AIDA Cruises, where he worked his way up from second officer to first captain. From AIDA, he took the leap to TUI Cruises,

where he worked as the Senior Head of Nautical Operations and Director Nautical Fleet & Health, before becoming Vice President Fleet Operations & Newbuild.

Dennis explains that he was drawn to Stena Line’s vision and values, as well as the company’s broad field of activity.

“I like the fact that Stena Line doesn’t offer just one service or product. The purpose of being a trusted link between people, places and societies sits well with me and I can’t wait to get started and learn more”, says Dennis.

Dennis will succeed Ian Hampton, who will remain with Stena Line and concentrate on new business ventures.

Belfast Harbour welcome new Pilot Boat to its Marine Fleet

Belfast Harbour has just taken delivery of its newest vessel, the Pilot Boat Hibernia, which represents a £1.5m investment in its marine fleet.

Hibernia will be tasked with transporting pilots to and from ships calling at Belfast as part of the service provided by Belfast Harbour which helps ships safely navigate through the port, to and from their designated berth.

Belfast Harbour handles more than 23.9 million tonnes of trade every year and its pilot boat fleet needs to operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year, therefore it is vital to ensure downtime is kept to a minimum.

The new vessel, built by Holyhead Marine Services, will replace PB4; the oldest pilot boat in Belfast Harbour’s fleet, which is being retired after 24 years of service.

With a lightweight, resin infused hull and refined shape, the new Hibernia has a fuel-efficient hull design and engines that are able to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) helping to reduce carbon emissions from pilot boat operations. It is also believed that it will be the first pilot vessel on the island of Ireland equipped with a selective catalytic reduction exhaust system, which reduces nitrous oxide emissions. The name Hibernia has a strong history and connection with Belfast Harbour. William Ritchie started shipbuilding in the city in 1791, on

the site of the future Harbour Office. Within a year, the 300 tonne Hibernia was launched, which began trading between Belfast, New York and the Caribbean. Over 230 years later Belfast Harbour is proud to bring the new Pilot Boat Hibernia into service at the Port.

Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour, has been named as the godmother of Pilot Boat Hibernia at a traditional naming ceremony designed to bring luck to the vessel and keep the crew safe.

Michael Robinson, Port Director at Belfast Harbour, said: “We are delighted to welcome Hibernia to our fleet of pilot boats at Belfast Harbour. We wanted to purchase a vessel that would advance and improve the resilience of this mission critical service. Our crew and engineers worked closely with the boat builder, Holyhead Marine Ltd, from the outset, as the project progressed from design through to delivery.”

“We’re committed to becoming a green port and sustainability is a core element of everything that we do. We were able to incorporate environmental improvements into the design of Hibernia which will help us on this decarbonisation journey.”

Stena Line reinforces the Irish Sea management team

Swedish ferry operator Stena Line announces strategic changes to its management team aimed at further enhancing its position as a market leader and driving continued growth in the region.

Over recent years, Stena Line’s Irish Sea operation has experienced significant expansion solidifying its status as a cornerstone of the company’s network. With 13 ships operating across 7 routes and providing an impressive 240 sailings each week, the Irish Sea has become an increasingly vital component of Stena Line’s business.

The recent launch of the Dublin – Liverpool freight route further underscored the company’s commitment to providing efficient and reliable transport solutions across the Irish Sea. As part of its ongoing development, Stena Line will be reinforcing regional management to effectively address the new opportunities and demands that lie ahead.

Since 2020, Paul Grant and his dedicated regional management team have demonstrated remarkable resilience and leadership, successfully navigating through both Brexit and the challenges presented by the COVID19 pandemic. Under their guidance, Stena Line has achieved significant growth, with car volumes increasing by almost 20% and freight volumes by 4%, setting new records for business levels in the region.

Effective June 1, 2024, Stena Line will revert to a two-region structure to reflect its growing business needs. Paul Grant, who has played a pivotal role in the success of the Irish Sea operations, will assume responsibility for the newly established Irish Sea North region,

overseeing operations from Belfast. In addition, Paul will join the main board of Stena Line (UK) Ltd. and serve as Stena Line’s representative on the UK Chamber of Shipping Ferry & Cruise.

“The Irish Sea has long been a key market for Stena Line, and I am pleased to continue leading our efforts and growth in our Belfast hub,” says Paul Grant, incoming Trade Director for Irish Sea North. “I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and confident that, with our reinforced management team, we will strengthen Stena Line’s position as the foremost ferry operator in the Irish Sea.”

Johan Edelman will take up the role of Trade Director for the Irish Sea South region, overseeing operations from Dublin and Rosslare. With a focus on development and growth, Johan will work to further enhance Stena Line’s presence in the region, building upon the strong foundation laid by his predecessors.

Johan Edelman comments, “I am thrilled to join the team in the Irish Sea and look forward to driving growth and innovation in the Irish Sea South region. Together with Paul and the entire Stena Line team, I am committed to delivering exceptional service and value to our customers while further expanding our market presence.”

As a result of these strategic changes, Stena Line will be well positioned to embark on a new chapter of growth and success in the Irish Sea, reaffirming its position as the preferred choice for passengers and freight operators alike.

Brittany Ferries confirms new weekly sailing on Rosslare-Cherbourg route

Brittany Ferries have added a third weekly return-sailing, connecting Rosslare with Cherbourg, starting from the end of April 2024.

The company says the move will boost connectivity ahead of the arrival of its rail-ferry service in 2025. Ferroutage will link Bayonne with Cherbourg by rail, carrying trailers for onward transport by ferry.

“The addition of a third weekly rotation from Cherbourg is great news for hauliers and logistics companies,” said Christophe Mathieu CEO Brittany Ferries. “It means even more opportunity for freight operators to by-pass the UK entirely, cutting down

on bureaucracy and delays that can occur the UK border.”

The company has massively grown the direct Ireland-France market since 2021 and has reaffirmed its freight and passenger traffic commitment. In two years, freight volumes on France to Ireland routes has grown by 96% from 3,808 in 2021 to 7,734 units last year. Passenger traffic has also been boosted by 412% (a fourfold increase) from 28,584 in 2021 to 146,351 last year.

Glenn Carr, Director of Commercial

Business Units Iarnród Éireann/ Irish Rail & Port Authority Rosslare Europort added, “We are delighted to see our shipping partner Brittany Ferries further increase services at Rosslare Europort. As we continue to significantly invest in facilities and infrastructure at the port it is great to see additional new services introduced that further strengthen our links and connectivity between Ireland and France.”

The service will leave Cherbourg at 18:20 local time on Monday, arriving at Rosslare at 14:00 on Tuesday. It will then depart Rosslare

at 18:00 destined for arrival in Cherbourg on Wednesday at 17:00.

Brittany Ferries has chartered Condor’s ferry the Commodore Clipper for the service, which will also include additional sailings to and from Portsmouth. The Clipper will be chartered to the company for around half the week: the other half it will continue to be used by Condor to serve the Channel Islands.

In addition to three weekly rotations linking Rosslare with Cherbourg, Brittany Ferries operates two weekly Cork-Roscoff round trips and a bi-weekly service from Rosslare to Bilbao.
