TBF THOMPSON MANAGING DIRECTOR RAYMOND CRILLY RETIRES AFTER A LIFETIME OF SERVICE

There are many things Managing Director of TBF Thompson, Raymond Crilly, will miss after his recent retirement following a lifetime in the industry – most of all perhaps his daily three hour 200 mile round trip to the office!

Raymond, who joined the company as part of a buy-out team in the role of Financial Director in 1999, took over as Managing Director and Dealer Principal together with fellow Directors, Alan Espie and Seamus Doherty in June 2016, succeeding the late Andy Magowan. “After more than 22 years with the company I reckon I have clocked up in excess of one million miles,” he says. “I will definitely miss my colleagues, but not the journey!” Highly regarded both a boss and a friend by many people over the years, he was given a great send-off when management and staff gathered recently at the company’s Garvagh headquarters to wish him well. Fellow Director Seamus Doherty, who is now serving as Joint Managing Director along with Alan Espie, said a few words at the get-together to thank father of four Raymond for his service over the years. “Raymond, you have been a great mentor and even greater friend. You have played an integral role in building the company to what it is today, and what we have learned from you will serve us for many years to come. On behalf of everyone here at TBF, we wish you many years of happiness, peace, and good health.” His career in the industry began after he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981 with the then Price Waterhouse (before the days of PWC). Later in 1981, he joined Isaac Agnew Group, initially in VW and Mercedes Lisburn Road and then in SMW Volvo in Ladas Drive. “In 1988, I moved to F A Wellworth & Co, the supermarket chain, and set up home in Enniskillen. Following the sale and closure of Wellworths, I met Andy Magowan through the Bank of Ireland and together we put together the initial buy-out of TBF which completed in late 1999.” He recalled many challenges along the way. “The 2008 recession was bad. We ended up closing our Dublin depot and reducing staff in the North by 25%. But, like everyone else, we had to keep going and the business eventually recovered. “2020 was also certainly challenging. Having had our best year trading ever in 2019, 2020 started off well but, then in March, the wheels came off. Nothing had ever prepared any of us for a pandemic and the challenges came thick and fast. Again, with the help of our amazing staff, we knuckled down and made the best of a very difficult situation. In spite of the difficulties, I am confident that the business is in a very strong position and will be successful for many years to come.” Of course, there have also been many highlights along the way. He adds: “The highlights of my career mainly relate to working with a great bunch of people including TBF staff and the many people representing the various franchises in the TBF portfolio. I was very proud to have had the honour of leading the company for the past five years with Alan and Seamus when we grew the business to be one of the most significant players in both the commercial vehicle and construction machinery sectors in the country.” So, how will he be spending his retirement? “I have a beautiful two year old granddaughter called Florie Mae Crilly, so I am really looking forward to spoiling her – and if the restrictions post Covid ever reduce, I look forward to travelling, eating and drinking.” In other words, enjoying his new found ‘freedom.’ And here at Plant & Civil Engineer, we wish him all the very best in that.

KDM HIRE LAUNCH NEW PORTFOLIO OF LIFTING & SHIFTING EQUIPMENT

KDM Hire has recently launched a new portfolio of lifting & shifting equipment products to add to their extensive hire fleet, including a range of mini cranes, glass lifting and cladding lifting equipment. This new range of products will complement an already extensive variety of lifting gear on offer.

Along with the opening of their new depot in Castlereagh Belfast and recently announced expansion plans to develop a new site in Dublin, Cookstown based KDM Hire Ltd has developed this unique range of specialist lifting equipment as part of this depot and fleet investment. These additional products will add to their current lifting product range and will be available from depots in Belfast, Dublin, and their headquarters in Cookstown, County Tyrone. Products included are a range of Mini Spider Cranes and Pick and Carry Cranes, ideal for lifting applications where larger cranes simply cannot access. Spider Cranes can be lifted over or onto rooftops or tracked into confined areas to undertake various lifting tasks in construction works or industrial environments. With retracted widths of only 750mm the smallest units can travel through a standard doorway or into service elevators allowing use inside buildings. Dual power (electric motor) options ensure work can be carried out cleanly indoors without any concern for fumes or emissions. A Contract Lifting service is also being offered for the first time, whereby all aspects of the lift program are undertaken by KDM. Before proceeding, all Lifts are planned in advance by qualified and appointed personnel. Other products include Glazing Robots and Glass Vacuum Lifters for safe and efficient lifting and placement of glass panels, no matter what size or shape. A range of Cladding Lifters will also be available to the facades and cladding sectors, providing a more cost-effective and safe

way of handling and placing roof or wall panels regardless of profile or length. Other products such as Mini Floor Cranes, Mobile Gantries, Modular Spreader Beams, Glass Trollies and Material Lifts will be offered to complement these latest hire products. Portable Conveyors are now also available for hire, which KDM say are ideal for moving large quantities of rubble, soil or sand from the most awkward areas. Capable of shifting up to 60 tonnes of material per hour up steep inclines, they will take the hard work out of excavations in confined spaces or below ground. KDM believes the introduction of this unique range to their existing fleet of powered access and material handling equipment, offers customers a one-stop solution to their lifting, shifting and access requirements with the reassurance of the support, safety and expertise needed in today’s busy working environment. All products are available to view online or can be found in the company’s latest 360-page rental catalogue.

news Luxury development gets top quality support from Groundforce

Constructing an enormous three-level basement right on the Bayswater Road in central London is not a job to be undertaken lightly and for that reason, specialist groundworks and concrete frame contractor Modebest knew it needed the best temporary works support solution available.

Modebest is constructing the basement for Park Modern, a new £450 million residential development with views over Kensington Gardens. The development, by main contractor Ant Yapi UK for developer Fenton Whelan, will deliver over 57 luxury apartments over 176,000sq ft plus 30,000sqft of commercial space. Support for the excavation, which measures 65m x 25m x 15m deep, is provided by more than 30 of Groundforce Shorco’s modular hydraulic props. The props, which include some of the company’s heaviest MP750 units, are braced against a waling beam comprising Super Mega Brace units to support the secant piled retaining wall. Construction of the basement commenced in late summer last year with installation of a guide wall followed by construction of a secant-piled retaining wall comprising 1,000mm diameter piles at 1,200mm centres. Temporary kingposts were installed in certain locations to support the capping beam, which was then constructed. Excavation then commenced and in September the first props for Level 1 were installed. In total, 33 Groundforce props will have been used to support the excavation. Level 1 uses fourteen MP250 units, each with a rated load capacity of 250 tonnes. Five of these props, spanning the central section of the basement, range in length from about 17m to 23m. To ensure sufficient stiffness over such long spans, these units employ 1,220mm diameter Super Tubes instead of the standard 610mm diameter extension tubes. Level 2 also employed fourteen props: three MP250s (of which one features Super Tube extensions), seven MP375s (375 tonne capacity) of which four had Super Tubes; and four of the largest MP750 props, each with a load capacity of 750 tonnes and each featuring Super Tubes. Level 3, at the bottom of the excavation, was supported by three MP250s and two MP750s and all props used Super Tubes. Groundforce’s Super Mega Brace was used around the perimeter at all three levels: Levels 1 & 2 each used 150m of Super Mega Brace, while Level 3 used 50m. One large section of bespoke steel waler beam was also incorporated at all three levels. “The job involves high loads and has very onerous deflection criteria,” explains Mark Whitmore, General Manager (Major Projects) with Groundforce. “To keep prop count to a minimum the highest capacity props on the market were needed.”

Zutec awarded software contract for Thames Tideway Tunnel

Dublin based construction technology company Zutec will be supplying the BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty (BMB) joint venture with digital quality assurance solutions for the West section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

Currently being built under the River Thames, the tunnel is designed to intercept millions of tonnes of raw sewage spills from entering the river in an attempt to keep the city clean and protect both people and wildlife alike. The Super Sewer will cost an estimated £3.8bn, and preparatory work began in 2015 with the project expected to be completed in 2025. As part of a four-year contract, Zutec will be providing its Quality Assurance and Snagging & Defect Management tools, which will allow the project teams to streamline inspections and provide realtime visibility around quality assurance. This is the latest in a series of major infrastructure project wins for the construction software company, one of which includes the HS2 project headed by Skanska, Costain and STRABAG (SCS). Comments Tom Boland, Global Head of Digitalisation at Zutec, “Due to our track record in infrastructure, we have a deep knowledge of the use of technology in this sphere, and we know what the pitfalls are. As projects like this one usually have specific requirements, a cookie-cutter approach just won’t work. Our software therefore comes in very neatly on complex construction projects because it allows for easy and seamless collaboration and is completely configurable to client needs. “Zutec will enable BMB to easily carry out and check inspections on time while in the field, provide up-to-the minute status reports and ensure standards are being maintained throughout the construction and handover process. We look forward to working with Tideway’s joint venture partners over the next several years and being part of this phenomenal project.”

The battery and fuse box are located in a lockable compartment under the operator’s seat to maximise security. All three excavators are also fitted with Yanmar’s next-generation fleet management system, SmartAssist Remote, as standard. With equipment location and status reported in real time, the system enables remote tracking via a PC or smartphone.

SMARTER, STRONGER, SAFER

THAT’S ISUZU’S LATEST GENERATION D-MAX

When the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the all-new Isuzu D-Max came up, courtesy of dealers Eakin Bros, we didn’t hesitate to take advantage of the offer, as Plant & Civil Engineer’s Phil Eaglestone reports.

Combining smart new styling and improved off-road performance with impressive safety technology, it certainly didn’t disappoint. We have been following the evolution of the D-Max over the years, with lots of test drives under our belt already, but we never fail to be surprised by the subtle and not so subtle changes that come with each generation. This third generation model, as Isuzu have said, not only delivers the capability and durability you’d expect from an Isuzu pick-up truck, it also features what can only be described as superior levels of comfort and refinement, while retaining the same workhorse practicalities that Isuzu customers have become accustomed to, with a one-tonne payload and up to 3.5 tonnes towing capacity. We are not surprised it recently was named 2021 Pick-up of the Year, and, thanks to its even stronger chassis and intelligent new ADAS safety systems, it has become the first pick-up to achieve the maximum 5-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP tests. Backed by Isuzu’s 125,000 mile / 5 Year warranty, the D-Max already appeals to a wide variety of drivers, from fleet operators to families, with the model range structured into three segments: Business, All-Purpose and Adventure. This latest line-up of trucks sits within each range and will clearly suit every customer’s requirements. The Business range features the Utility trim and this base specification workhorse is offered in a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 and in three different cab types: single, extended and double cab. Developed with work in mind, the Utility features a wide range of practical and safety features to ensure drivers are as productive, safe and comfortable as possible.

Versatile

The All-New Isuzu D-Max has an incredible amount of additional equipment on all variants so the Utility model is anything but basic. Comfort and convenience are assured in this versatile pick-up thanks to automatic headlights with high beam assist, automatic windscreen wipers, speed-sensitive power steering, DAB radio and a stop & start system. Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are now standard on all models. Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limiter and Lane Departure

Warning & Prevention are fitted on every model and, for the first time in the pick-up segment, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor and Emergency Lane Keeping are fitted on all double cabs. Utility models are ideally suited to working environments with features like an easily-cleanable vinyl flooring and durable steel wheels, while the bumpers, door mirrors and door handles are made from a hard-wearing black plastic. The All-Purpose range consists of the DL20 and DL40, with ‘DL’ signifying that the rear diff-lock becomes a standard feature and the ‘20’ and ‘40’ demonstrating the model hierarchy. All-Purpose models are also available with an automatic transmission, which come with the additional ADAS functionality of Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist. The DL20 features heated front seats, rear parking sensors, front fog lights and a front centre armrest for increased comfort and practicality, while bodycoloured front and rear bumpers, silver door handles, a medium grey radiator grille and 18” alloy wheels provide a more premium appearance. DL40 adds a variety of sophisticated enhancements like distinctive Bi-LED headlights, LED front fog lights, daytime running lights and rear lights, a chrome radiator grille, silver side steps and twotone 18” alloy wheels. DL40 models also include front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

Interior benefits

Keyless entry, introduced from DL40, works on both the driver and passenger side and is accompanied by a push-button start system and welcome light. The interior benefits from leather upholstery, a leather steering wheel and an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat. The

7” multifunction colour touchscreen is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and there’s also a dual-zone climate control system, which allows the driver and passenger to set different temperatures. Topping off the new model line-up is V-Cross which sits within the Adventure range. It features distinguishing ‘Gun Metal’ exterior styling on the radiator grille, side steps, door mirrors, door handles and 18” alloy wheels. The premium interior is practical and fuss-free: entertainment is provided by a 9” multifunction colour touchscreen with a CD player and eight speakers, there is an autodimming rear-view mirror and automatic headlight levelling, and the smart leather interior is complemented with V-Cross branded carpet mats. There are up to eight colours to choose from on the All-New Isuzu D-Max. Utility models are available in four colours (Splash White, Mercury Silver, Obsidian Grey and Onyx Black), DL20 models also come with the option of Spinel Red, the vibrant new Valencia Orange is offered from DL40 and the stylish Pearl White is exclusive to V-Cross models. Isuzu have labelled this new generation of the D-Max as ‘smarter, stronger, safer,’ and having spent some time driving it along our local roads, we can only agree. But don’t take our word for it, give Eakin Bros a call if you want to get up close and personal to test it out for yourself.
