No borders, just horizons, with freedom. - Amelia Earhart

Chasing The Horizon As the land gives us a view, it also gives us the horizon. It is timeless, immortal, and without borders. It evokes human's curiosity, it starts us chasing after it. "Chasing the Horizon" represents human desire to seek and explore the limits of the known. "Landscape" is the result of what we've done afterward. Every landscape just becomes the spoken story of the people who live within it. Nevertheless, regardless of whether the story is joyous, tragic, or lonely, the free line will always connect them.

The Skin of Real World It was an earthwork that created by American artist Mary Miss. I think the interesting point of this work is that showing an aspect of the environment that we've unnoticed: the land is always a home that still being built by nature to us. The concept was transfered into the symbols that human can related to, such as manmade structure and a ladder. It also challenged our senses and aroused the curiosity of exploring the deeper space of the land.

The main idea of my design is to explore the boundary between two different characters. By interpreting the meaning of the title, I found the potential behind of it. I think that there’s a lot of invisible boundary hidden behind of our daily life. Although they aren’t unseen, they still effect our life stronger than those physical boarder. So my purpose is to make people re-feel those strong boarder, re-think the meaning of life by going into the deep gap of city landscape. 11
" Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away. " —Philip K. Dick

The Truman Show, Peter Weir (1998) And this scene aslo make me think of one of my favorite film, The Truman Show (1998). At the end of the movie, Jim Carrey found the boundary between his fake world and the real world in a dramatic way. Finially, he decided to walk on the stair in the sky and ready to explore the true world that he've never touch with.

Nature / Man-made
Cold / Hot
Darkness / Light
The boundary between nature and man-made split the two different types of living styles in the city landscape.
Although the temperature is unseen, but we can still feel it’s existence by settings a boarder of temperature difference.
The effects of bright and darkness always case magnificent light view in architecture. And this boundary is also flexible.

The pool is also an interesting boundary between two different humans' behavior in two different situations. The water also case the sight difference between two sides.
P2
Outside / Inner
Skin is our inner mind container. Human use their skin to express their ideas. However, human can also hide their feeling, causing the skin a boundary between two different emotions.
P3
Life / Death
Life and death is the strongest border in human’s life. It’s also complicated, but yet simple. The living human use their memory to portray the one that is gone.

[ About The Site ]
The Monastery
My site is located on the hill of Tamsui first public graveyard. The most inreresting part of the site is that there's also a public sport park right beside to the garveyard, causing an invisible borader. And this borader just became the start of my design. I think that because of the type of these two dfferent program, it's also became the borader of noise and calm, even life and death. For me, these unseen lines just like the skin of real world.

[ Study Model A, B ]
My movement is to create a long underground walk on the border of graveyard and basketball courts. It looks like a giant gap on the hill, also a monument to the amazing landscape of the site. The form of gap changed depends on the different height of the hill. There are four turns in my form of passage, and each of the turn also create the different scenarios and programs.

For people who walk in, Walking underground is a sense covering journey because most of human senses are blocked in a tiny tunnel. Human can only the texture of the wall or the precious light coming from the above. Therefore, the form of tunnel is important. Different type of tunnel can create different programs or even atmosphere. So eventually, I developed 8 prototypes of underground tunnel, and most of them are used in my design.

For people who is bathing, Water is the most important material for us to experience the difference of temperature. Because of the refraction that casued by water, our skin becomes the most realistic sense than our eyes. Therefore, the way of entering the water is important. So on the edge of every pool, I design a slope. So that people can slowing entering the water, having feeling of the height difference between the water and their body, and then feeling the difference of temperature.

[ Leading ] The underground path will lead people into a line pool. After cloth changing, people will start their journey of sense here.
[ Entrance ] It's a small entrance hidden in the landscape.
24
[ Exit ] After finish their journey of sense, people will come out from another tunnel. The ending location is the Tamsui monastery.
[ Pool ] There's no roof for the pool. So the light and the rain will came into the spaces underground.
[ Passage ] The passage is hidden next to the no-roofed pool. The water of the pool will reflect the texture of sky. 25

Unit of Desire Usually in Taiwanese old city view, most the windows are equipped with another layer of metal framed window. This kind of minor structure became an unique Taiwanese street landscape. It not only tested the limit of the light structure could be but also shown the different idenity of the resident which lived here. I would like to call this interesting landscape phenomenon as "The Unit of Desire." You can barely see the original facade of the building. But the building became more close to the reality: by showing the desire for living of every resident.
31
32
The main idea of this project is to re-think the possibility of architecture which is built by no architect. Normally in architecture, every living rules was set by the architect. It controls humans' daily life, but sometimes becomes lack of humanity. If we can make an architecure which only keeps a kind of building rule, and let the resident show their idenity through thier building. It will become a more creative thinking of architecture. 33
Space of Desiring I think that humans desire is beyond the form. If we can put every different kind of the desire into every same box, let the desiring change the space. With one aspect showing all the boxes at the same time, the difference and the identity of every desire will become more readable and energic at the same time.

[ About Site ] The site is chosen at Huanhe viaduct. Because of the history of Wanhua, poor workers usually live in this district. The needs of hardwares became important, so the shop of hardwares and food gathered under the viaduct for the low-pricing rent. Even living in this harsh situation, the

The big gap between the viaducts is the basic infrastructure of each unit and also the sharing space of programs.
46
On the edge of the modular structure, every unit can install the sign base on their programs. The sign will also composing another order of desire.
The sharing space on the third floor has the opening views to the both sides of the viaducts. It's also the borador of the urban and the nature.
There're also some units hanging on the wall, becoming another extension to the the river park for the sharing space in the gap of viaducts.

Shape of Dreams The photo was a project call "Chubby Clouds" by brand Anya Hindmarch at London Fashion Week Festival. The project is a conceptual temporary installation for the imagination of sleeping. Tourist are also asked to change into protective white boilersuits before entering the project, so that creating this interesting view. I gave it the title called "Shape of Dreams" because of the chill and soft vibes I felt from this picture. I think that shape means the form that we can imagine, but dreams are the things that beyond any literal description.
49
50
In this project, I want to challenge our stereotype of the normal underground walk. In our imagination, the underground walk is usually a dark and stiff tunnel that people rarely want to long stay. But what if we can change our experience of going underground into a soft and unexcepted journey? I want to create the soft texture in our city, and becoming the shape of dreams of our city daily life. 51
In this project, I also want to challenge the brand new material while thinking the design. The fabric is a kind of material that can have multiple organic forms but also have many different levels of transparency because of the tension pull. It can create a lot of interesting and beautiful spaces just base one single material. It can allow the light to come inside the spaces, but also create the magnificent shadow outside the fabric at the same time. 52
53
54
So that the fabric design always comes with the hard frame. It's one the limit while making the space of fabrics. But right now we are in the underground. We can have the opportunity to hide the frame, or even try to redefine them, making people mainly focus on the experience of soft spaces. 55
With the pull of magnets, the fabrics being twisted like the gravity field.
56
57
Shape of dreams means free form. So I want to create the landscape of softness.

With the different direction of tension pull, we can create a lot of function. If we pull up, the space just become a temperary reading tent in the city. If we grow a tree on the fabric, it compose a beautiful curve line because of the "weight of life."

[ About Site ] My site is located at the Xinzhongshan Linear Park. The site the longest green line park in the Taipei city. There're also mulitple layers of different porgrams hiding behind the line park. The first underground layer of line park is the book store. The second underground layer of line park is the MRT Zhongshan Station. But these layers dosen't have any verical space connected with each other. So that these people in these floors is actually isolateed with no perceptions. When people walking past inthe undergound, they can't feel anything from the other layers. 67
Reading Landscape Because there're a lof of different programs happened horizontally. The purpose of my design is to create the vertical communcate space for these underground layers. I wanna connect the ground floor activities with the layers of bookstore, so that we can have an opening reading landscape for people in both layers. With the special space of the fabric design, people would like to stay here for more long time. And the soft texture will also break our stereotype to the traditional underground walk.

[ Original Site ] 70
The first step, I dig out the thickness beteween the groundfloor park and the first layers of bookstore. So that the light will come in to the first undergound floor. I also make an second staircase, then we have the possibility of creating a contunal circulation with the original staircase.
[ Process Diagram - 1 ] 71
The second step, I installed the first space of fabrics in the empty zone, connecting both of the old and the original staircases. It create a brand new experinece of space for the people at the underground walk.
[ Process Diagram - 2 ] 72
The new installaton of fabrics also created multiple special experiences of spaces for the people inside or outside the fabrics. For the people at the original underground walk, the fabric became an organic arcade, creating the motivation for people to stay. For people on the fabric, it also became a soft rest couch for the passenger that can stay and take the rest.

The shadow of the grasshopper structure panel also create an interesting grid texture on the form of fabric.
The transparency of the fabric also created a huge contrast to the heavy texture the original underground walk gave, making people spent more time look at the ceiling.
From the angle of staircase, the views towards the fabric is marvelous, making the original boring staircase into another entrance into wonderland.
