Alligator Robb With Words Of Gator Wisdom

Frank Robb is back with some more alligator wisdom. With the recent stories about alligators in the news, we thought we would reach out to Robb for some info about gators and what to look out for. Right now, gators spend most of their energy feeding and finding a mate. This means they are traveling throughout our park in search of both - which also means that we, as residents, need to be extra careful and aware of their excursions. Check out page 34 for more information on the Florida gator.

Manager’s Corner

March 3, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

We are at the peak of our busy season now and it’s wonderful seeing our community so active. Recent spring-like weather has everyone outside enjoying this season. Daylight Savings Time arrives next weekend, Sunday, March 12, at 2 am, giving us even more evening daylight to enjoy.

This recent warm weather will trigger the growth of your lawns and landscaping. The next TruGreen treatment of liquid fertilizer and herbicide will occur Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 and 15. The previous January treatment, along with some cold weather in January, should’ve knocked back weed growth, so I expect this next treatment and the warmer weather to push out healthy grass. Now we need Mother Nature to cooperate and offer us some rain! We are currently in a dry spell and the CSA office was “flooded” this week with calls for irrigation questions and requests. Earlier this week we increased run-times on the irrigation clocks throughout the community. Our irrigation system is designed to supplement rainfall, but it will never provide the kind of coverage that a good rain offers. Please call the CSA office and ask for a work order if you are noticing dry patches in your lawn, but be patient, as our team can get backed up this time of year.

I have received several calls and inquiries this winter about “purple” streetlights along the roads in our community. There are a total of 147 streetlights in TGO that are managed by FPL on our behalf. Three years ago, these FPL streetlights were converted from high pressure sodium bulbs to LED. According to FPL, the LED bulbs are faulty and that is the reason why they are changing from bright white to purple. Courtesy Patrol inventoried each of the locations where the bulbs are failing. I sent this information to my contact at FPL and he assures me that we are on a list to have these lights replaced. I will keep you posted.

The Florida Forestry Department was in our community this week performing some firebreak work on the CSA conservation land along our south border, behind the library. They are working with our Firewise team to cut paths in this heavily-forested area, to reduce fire fuel and give firefighters access into these areas to fight fires if needed. The ultimate goal of Firewise, Florida Forestry and the St. John’s is to host a prescribed burn in this forested area, to reduce fire fuel and keep this forest safe and healthy for many more years. Conditions must be perfect, and many agencies must work together to host a prescribed burn. You will be notified if/ when this will occur. Kudos to the Firewise Committee for championing these efforts.

TGO alligators are becoming more active as the weather warms up and we grow closer to spring mating season. TGO loves our wildlife, and we work hard to live in harmony with and preserve it. We’ve got some very knowledgeable people here at TGO who volunteer with the Nature Center to assist our homeowners with wildlife concerns. If you, or your pet, has an encounter with an alligator that concerns you, please contact the CSA office to get assistance on how to address your concern. Most importantly, do not feed the alligators, or any of our wildlife. This causes them to lose their fear of humans and sometimes become aggressive, and these gators must be destroyed. CSA must be involved in the decision to contact the state trapper, as this trapper must come through our TGO gates and access our common area lakes. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to live in harmony with the wildlife that also make their home here at beautiful TGO. Our crocodilian expert, Alligator Rob, provides more information on page 34.

Sincerely,

3

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

A short and helpful reference for living in TGO

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

Record Setting Season! Thank You!

The Activities Committee wants to thank everyone who bought concert tickets for the 2022 - 2023 season. This is the first time we sold out four of our five shows. The November show was almost a sellout with only 17 tickets left. It definitely has been our best season ever!

Various committee members have worked hard to find different ways to advertise our concerts. The Happenings has done a great job promoting the shows over the summer months and throughout the season. Our challenge now is to offer a variety of entertainers in our upcoming 2023 - 2024 season. Contracts have been signed so be sure to mark your calendars to buy general admission tickets when the TGO Tickets & Gift Shop opens on October 2, 2023.

We realize some of our homeowners who do not come down until January were disappointed that the Bee Gees tickets were sold out before Christmas. We suggest you make arrangements with a neighbor or friend to buy tickets on your behalf in October or November. For those who are new to TGO and have not had time to get to know their neighbors, we are working on a program to help you purchase tickets if you do not arrive until January. There will be more information on this program in the August/September Happenings.

The upcoming concerts are listed on the opposite page along with a short bio on each entertainer or group. Please go online to read The Happenings, click on the yellow button by each act, and you can watch a short video on each one.

You can also view these video clips now on the loop that is running in the TGO Tickets and Gift Shop. If you are attending either of your March concerts, you will have the opportunity to review the upcoming concerts before the evening show begins.

We believe we have selected a variety of music starting with the Latin rhythms of Gloria Estefan to the “Generations of Soul” featuring Jesse Hamilton whose vocal style covers a wide variety of genres!

Thanks again for making this our best season ever. Many of you may remember an old ad that said “You’ve come a long way, baby.” We believe this applies to the quality of entertainment that we have been able to provide over the last 20 years. The group of sponsors who have been kind enough to contribute to our concert fund has been outstanding. Take time to thank them whenever you use their services.

The bar has been set high for next season. Our goal now is to sell out all five performances. Be sure to get your tickets early so you will not be disappointed!

Volunteers Needed...

Have you ever wondered how so many events and activities take place; Concerts, dances, the variety show, trivia night, the artisian market, the golf cart parade, and the 5K Walk/Run? How about the ladies who work in the Activities Ticket & Gift Shop selling tickets and clothing, and the ushers who work the concerts? Or the Sound and Light Crew who runs all the equipment for our concerts and variety shows? How would bingo ever function if we did not have all the people who volunteer to be the bankers, call the numbers and handle concessions? All of these activities are arranged by your Activities Board of Directors and their group of volunteers - Come Join Us!

We welcome all residents and renters to come to our monthly meetings to find out just what we do. This is your community, and hopefully you might have some new ideas and suggestions for events in the future that you would like to share with us. Our hope is that you will find something that interests you, and subsequently volunteer a few hours a month to be a part of our team. Some of us are getting old, some of us have health issues, and that is why we are asking you to volunteer your time in order that all of these events can continue into the future. We believe these activities are an integral part of what makes TGO a great place to live!

Activities meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 1:00 pm in the Plantation Manor. We hope to see you at one of these meetings.

Our 2023-24 Consert Series Shows - Videos Included

November 16, 2023 - Gloria Estefan Experience - Rhythm is Gonna Get You

This show is a high-energy tribute to the Latin pop star Gloria Estefan, who sold over one hundred million records during the course of her career! Najibo is pure energy; and she embodies the spirit of Estefan in so many ways! She effortlessly commands the stage as her body gives into the Latin rhythms powered by her nine-piece Rhythm Machine Band. Brace yourself as she belts out all the Estefan favorites like “Get on your Feet,” “123,” “Anything for You,” “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga” and many more! The Gloria Estefan Experience is one show you won’t soon forget!

January 25, 2024 - The Music and Passion of Barry Manilow

Experience one of the most authentic tribute acts ever to hit the music scene as DAYBREAK “The Music and Passion of Barry Manilow” takes you on a musical journey back to the 70’s. Fans will experience Barry Manilow’s greatest hits the way you remember them. Led by veteran musician and accomplished pianist Joe Hite, DAYBREAK, an 8-piece ensemble, brings to life timeless classics like “Mandy,” “Can’t Smile Without You” and the foot stomping rhythm of “Copacabana” just to name a few.

February 8, 2024 - The Modern Gentlemen - Pop, Rock, Jazz, Doo Wop Landon Beard, Todd Fournier, and brothers Brian and Brandon Brigham were first brought together by the legendary Frankie Valli. For over a decade, they’ve wowed audiences all over the world with the music icon as The Four Seasons. During their tenure with the hall of fame group, they developed their own identity. Valli heard something in them he never found in any of the configurations of singers he’d worked with and gave his blessing to start their own group. They finely tuned their sound to the classic hits from over the past 70 years, breathing new life into the Great American Songbook and so much more!

March 7, 2024 - Frankie Scinta - Vocalist, Musician, Comedian

Frankie Scinta is the heart and soul of his show, The Scintas for over four decades. He performs every night like it’s his first and last. After appearing on national TV as a child prodigy, Frankie has never looked back. He has been headlining his own show in Las Vegas for over 18 years and is still bringing audiences to their feet nightly. He has always been a true patriot to Veterans, Law Enforcement and all first responders throughout his career. He pays homage nightly to the men and women of the Armed forces and the ones who served before them.

March 21, 2024 - Jesse Hamilton and his Band - Generations of Soul

Jesse brings a seasoned, yet fresh, youthful energy to the stage with each and every performance! Jesse has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with, Cher, Patti Labelle, Jeffrey Osborne, The Clark Sisters, Christopher Reeves, 95 South, Lauryn Hill and Busta Rhymes, to name a few. His vocal style ranges from R&B to Rock, Jazz to Gospel and the Classic Standards. Jesse is able to ‘Rock’ with the young, ‘Croon’ with the old, and ‘Twist and Shout’ with the baby boomers! Jesse is continually upgrading his show and expanding his repertoire of music, patter and dance! So as Jesse says…Come Croon With Me!

Who Builds Those Wheelchair Ramps in TGO?

There are many volunteers in TGO who do many great things, and for those who don’t know this group, these are true TGO heroes. They volunteer their time and expertise to build handicap ramps for our residents whose health has declined so they can use these ramps to continue their lives the best they can.

This group was started by Paul Knue, who organized the first group in February of 2016. Paul had heard of someone who was in need a ramp, got a group of friends together to help build that ramp, and the rest is history. The group is strictly a “volunteer” group that only charges the material costs needed for the structure. Labor is never charged for their efforts.

The original group was: Paul Knue, Bub Elders, Dave Simko, Steve Scully, John Watts, and Gary Thinglum. The group recently expanded with two new volunteers, Ernie Click and Darrell Blenus.

Since 2015 they have either built, moved, or “refitted” approximately 15 to 16 ramps in The Great Outdoors for

people who have truly needed them. Most structures are completed in a day to a day in a half.

The fastest ramp they have ever done was done in less than a day. After hearing at a condo party about a lady who really needed a ramp, the group organized the next morning, and moved in a pre-built ramp (previously used by another person), modified it and had it in place and functional by 11:00 a.m.

A number of years ago, they built a wheelchair ramp for a lady who had cancer. She had not been out of the house in weeks because of her front steps. After the wheelchair ramp was built, she was finally able to go outside.

“Building these ramps for someone who has not been able to get out of their house, because their steps are too difficult for them to navigate, brings a lot of pleasure and happiness to our group. After installing the handicap ramp, it’s like a new found freedom for them and it is a great feeling for us.”

They have also volunteered their services for repairs on the porch railing at the Nature Center.

20
Back Row: Builders Dave Simko, Gary Thinglum and Paul Knue. Front Row: Doc Fraser, who helps facilitate ARC approval, and builders Bub Elders, Steve Scully and John Watts.

The group works closely with ARC to get the application approved in a timely fashion - which helps expedite the projects. Typically the group creates the application and drawings for the owner. Once submitted, the ARC will normally Field Approve these applications so that the ramp construction can start as quickly as possible. The building team coordinates closely with ARC to make this possible. Sometimes approval can be as quick as a few hours as their track record for detailed plans and solid construction are well respected.

This is a fantastic group of guys who really enjoy what they do while having fun building the ramps. This is an important service for TGO residents who can use their support.

“We are proud of our group and what we have accomplished in our park to help our citizens. The ARC committee has been a great help to us. We appreciate our working relationship.”

If you get a chance to meet these guys or spot them on the job building a ramp, please extend your thanks for their contributions to TGO. They are true heroes.

For more information about ramps, contact Gary Thinglum at 906-399-8645.

Remember, these guys are all snowbirds and are only here from January until early April.

TAX TIPS

It’s that time of year again... Time to start preparing those taxes. We reached out to our local resident accountant, Julian (Joey) Cecio, for some tips on what to look for when we prepare our 2022 returns.

Every year, tax time, can generate feelings from anxiety to fear and doubt. With this in mind, let’s take a look at some tax saving advantages that are effective beginning in 2023. Quick reading tip: You may see abbreviations like (TCJA) and (IRA). These stand for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. These laws enacted many provisions that benefit both individuals and businesses.

Individual Savings Tips

Get some Home Energy Credits: A 30% “residential energy credit” is available for installing solar panels or other equipment to harness renewable energy like wind, geothermal and biomass fuel. This credit runs from 2022 through 2032. It is also available to battery storage technology.

The CCRC expense deduction: A Continuing Care Retirement Community is an assisted living facility rather than a nursing home. The key point - a percentage of the cost of the entrance fee and monthly charges can be utilized as medical care and therefore, deducted as medical expenses. Remember, the threshold for deducting medical expenses is 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI).

Donations to Charity: If you itemize your deductions, you can write off donations made to qualified charitable organizations - within generous limits. Strategy - bunch deductions together to optimize results. Cash contributions can be deducted up to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Any excess can be carried forward five years. Long-term capital gain property can be deducted up to 30% of AGI. The value of capital gain property is the fair market value at the time of donation. Any excess can be carried forward five years.

Electric Vehicle (EV) credits: The tax credits for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids were enhanced and extended, but only for some taxpayers. The credit for up to $7,500 for the cost of a new EV is extended through 2032. No credit is available for a van, SUV or pickup truck costing $80,000 or more; $55,000 for other vehicles. A credit of up to $4,000 for purchasing a used EV costing up to $25,000 is available. The credit phases out at certain tax filing thresholds.

Traditional IRA contributions: You can deduct contributions to your Individual Retirement Accounts. Beginning in 2020 there is no age limit for making deductible contributions. What can I deduct? Under Age 50, $6,500. Age 50 and above, $7,500. This is called the $1,000 “catch-up” rule. Of course, special rules apply. Your deductible limits are adjusted or “phased-out” for individuals or their spouses (if married) who participate in an employer-sponsored 401k savings plan. Deductions are phased-out within Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) ranges and not deductible above those ranges, depending on your filing status.

Roth IRA contributions: You can deduct contributions to your Roth Individual Retirement Accounts. What can I deduct? Under Age 50, $6,500. Age 50 and above, $7,500. Again, this is the $1,000 “catchup” rule. Yes, more special rules. As with traditional IRAs, deductible limits are adjusted or “phased-out” for individuals or their spouses (if married) who participate in an employer sponsored 401k savings plan. These ranges are higher than traditional IRA rules. Deductions are phased-out within Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) ranges, depending on your filing status.

Still working? Use employer 401k plans: Contributions to Employer-sponsored plans are tax deductible. How it works: Contributions are deposited for you which lowers your taxable wages AND employers offer matching. If you can take advantage of this, do. It’s free money! Beginning in 2023, the total 401k contributions limit, including employer matching is $22,500. Above age 50, $30,000. This includes the $7,500 “catch-up” rule.

Key Points: Traditional and Roth IRA contributions are grouped together – not per IRA type. Remember, traditional IRAs let you reduce your tax bite now through deductibility. Your withdrawals are taxed at your regular tax rate (typically - but not always) lower when retired. Roth IRAs do not reduce your tax bite now because they are not deductible. However, withdrawals (including any earnings) are tax free. Employer-sponsored 401k’s allow you to put money away pre-tax, offer matching by the employer. What this means is your contribution plus tax savings on your contribution plus employer matching equals money that builds quickly.

Julian Cecio has been a Florida licensed Certified Public Accountant for over 40 years. He and his wife Chrissy are full-time TGO residents. He can be reached at 786-201-5061 or by email at jjcecio@gmail.com.

The Joys of Being Over 70

There are some unexpected joys about being on the other side of 70, for example..

• Kidnappers aren’t very interested in you.

• In a hostage situation, you will probably be released first.

• No one expects you to run into a burning building. Or run at all.

• People call at 9 pm and ask, “Did I wake you?”

• People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

• There’s nothing left to learn the hard way.

• Things you buy now won’t wear out.

• You can eat dinner at 4:00 pm.

• You enjoy hearing about other people’s surgeries.

• You get into a heated argument about pension claims.

• You have a party and the neighbors don’t even realize it.

• You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.

• You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.

• You sing along with the elevator music.

• Your eyes won’t get much worse.

• Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.

• Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the National Weather Service.

• Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either.

• Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size. And you may not remember where you read this list.

Can you benefit from new RMD age limit?

If you have a traditional IRA and a 401(k), you have to start taking money out at a certain age — but that age requirement is changing, and it could lead to changes in your financial strategy.

New tax laws mean you must now start taking withdrawals from some of your retirement accounts at age 73, rather than 72. And in 2033, this age moves up to 75.

Being able to postpone these required minimum distributions, or RMDs, may give you more opportunities in some areas. For one thing, because RMDs are taxable, the delay may allow you to avoid being pushed into a higher tax bracket, at least for a time.

You could possibly lower these taxable withdrawals by converting your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, which does not require RMDs. However, this conversion is a taxable event itself.

When thinking about delaying RMDs or doing a Roth IRA conversion, consult with your tax advisor. The new RMD age limits do give you more flexibility, so think carefully about how you might benefit from the added time.

Fireproofing Your Home Against Wildfires by Ed Brown

The rains have been backing off. The ground has been drying out, as has the deadfall from the two hurricanes that beat us up last November. There is sufficient ground fuel to satisfy the voracious appetite of a wildfire. All we need now are the lightning storms that have made Bithlo, just to our west, the lightning capital of Central Florida! Cloud to ground lightning has made Central Florida the lightning capital of the U.S.A! With those facts in mind, we should discuss how you can best protect your home from wildfires.

The strong wind that heralds a storm front and a wildfire is magnified by the fire itself, spiraling with increasing velocity and a counter clockwise spin as it races aloft. Yes, it’s tornadic, and it often spawns tornados that “rearrange” structures, people, livestock, pets and the landscape itself. The weather news is briefing us daily with Wildfire Advisories! So, what can you do to fireproof your home?

Again, be aware. The weather news is an important part of the process. You can’t completely fireproof your home, however, some homes can be better prepared than others to withstand wildfires. You have heard, right here, that you should keep your property LEAN, CLEAN and GREEN. What, beside a catchy rhyme, does that mean?

LEAN tells us to keep planting around your property to a minimum. Fewer plants, less ground fuel.

CLEAN reminds us to pick up vegetative waste, whether it’s a 10 foot long dried palm frond on your shingled roof or dry leaves blown under the porch or a dead, dried, brown bush that didn’t survive our Winter. Pick them up and leave them curbside for CSA pick-up.

GREEN directs us to keep our plants and our lawn well watered. Keep them fireproof green, not dead brown and flammable! The CSA office can help you to get a sprinkler Work Order started if your sprinklers are not sprinkling.

Closing Eaves: Stand under the outer edge of your roof and check where it meets your home’s exterior. If you can see the rafter tails, then you may want to close your eaves with a noncombustible material.

Covering Exterior Vents: You can also prevent embers from getting inside your home by covering your exterior vents. Use metal wire mesh that is 1/8 inch or smaller.

Changing Out Your Windows: Single-pane windows are more likely to break when exposed to extreme heat, so, opt for multi-pane windows, safety glass or fireproof shutters. If you did upgrade your windows and replaced the aluminum storm shutters - keep the shutters! Don’t trash them! They are an excellent fireproof cover for your new multi-pane windows.

Fireproofing your home can become prohibitively expensive, so you do what you can, upgrade in stages every year. Stay AWARE of WILDFIRES and Weather Forecasts and pay your Fire Insurance premiums without fail!

Be Firewise This Fire Season And Good Luck!

Alligator Robb Is Back With Words of Gator Wisdom

Howdy once again Great Outdoorsians! This is Frank “Alligator” Robb of Environmental Education Awareness Research Support and Services (EEARSS.ORG) back to discuss alligators again.

Since we last chatted a little bit of time has gone by. Originally we talked about alligators and other crocodilians, and thereafter we discussed some of the more common snake species that you might come across here on the Space coast or in your yard. There have been some things alligator-related in the news and media lately, and there will be even more so in the coming weeks when we look at the time of year we are in. So, I figured it appropriate to revisit the topic of our backyard alligators.

Let’s start specifically with the time of year we are in. The favorite term everyone uses is “It’s alligator mating season,” usually followed by, “Watch out, they are very aggressive this time of the year!” Wow, this is an enormous pet

Florida and, more exactly, the Space coast in which we live, is different in so many ways. With the topic at hand, I am referring to the climate. We are coastal, so while we might get two freezes a year, they are not typically deep freezes due to the ocean and the rivers so close by to keep us warm. Our first cold front of the year is like clockwork. It’s plus or minus a week of Halloween nearly every year, this past year being a tad earlier than that for the first time I could remember.

You are likely wondering why we are discussing climate after I was just saying we were discussing alligators. That’s because its all tied together in a very fancy knot. This along with hormones. Alligators have two times a year in which their hormones ramp up. This is nearly exactly linked with Spring and Fall. We have always called these times the Fall Crawl and the Spring Crawl.

This all leads to increased activity. Not aggression. I’ve caught thousands of alligators and have only met a few that wanted anything to do with people and those were the gators that had been fed. Again this isn’t aggression, this is associating people with food. As we discussed in a previous article, their intelligence is, I think, their biggest weakness. Odd statement to make, but if they can find an easy way to use less energy (Being Fed), they will take it. It only takes one time for them seeing you throwing food to the ducks or fish, to then say, “Oh…I don’t need to expend as much energy doing that!” Energy is what they are always striving to store up. When you see an alligator laying on the bank, he is thermoregulating. They are cold-blooded and are literally acting as a solar panel absorbing energy so they can then go feed, or travel to a new area. Just like you having to charge your golf cart before taking a ride, that’s his version.

34

As the weather warms, their hormones are going up at the same time. These things match up in Spring and Fall. So not only warmth-wise do they have the energy to move, they have the serious desire too as well. They have spent all winter likely not eating much, sometimes not anything.

They spend most of that energy feeding and finding a mate. This means they are traveling, and with more homes and people in Florida than ever before, there are now homes in areas that they may have been traveling through for decades. Remember, they can live as long as we do, and they have an excellent memory.

During the summer here they typically stop moving due to it being too warm, and slow the feeding down as they have had all spring to make up for everything they missed over the winter. When fall comes around they will pair back up and even court a mate again. Combats are common and they will walk, sometimes looking for a place to over-winter.

If I told you how many times I have heard the mention of an alligator’s brain size and that they are just a dumb dinosaur… Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The alligator has the same cerebral cortex as a dolphin. Yes, you read that correctly. They can solve problems; they are thinkers and studiers of everything. Really, it is their intelligence that gets them in trouble so often. They learn quickly and if an easier way is provided to them, they take it. For instance, if you are in the backyard by your pond/lake/canal/ditch and you are feeding the fish or the turtles or the ducks… any wildlife, they are watching this, they are always watching and taking notes. They never, ever forget. They see you feeding these animals and after one or two times of doing this, you have yourself a friendly neighborhood alligator. Fishing provides them the same opportunity as an easy meal. After a fisherman catches a fish, that fish is tired and is an easy catch for the alligator. Not to mention some fishermen leave things behind that the gator will clean up.

This is not me saying don’t go fishing; I love fishing, just do it smartly and with the respect of knowing that if a gator

shows up, you should move on. If you find yourself in the backyard feeding wildlife in the water... I am sorry, but you are part of the problem and the best thing you can do is stop. Nearly every bite I have ever worked involved a fed gator or someone in the process of feeding one.

Why does an alligator lay back and watch and study? That is how he builds himself a game plan. He is watching all and planning a move. Maybe every afternoon at 3:00 pm you come home, walk to the edge of the lake and feed the fish. He knows that and will plan his entire day around it. This means he is studying the birds, rabbits, squirrels, and sadly, sometimes your pets, and learning their behaviors. That doesn’t make him bad, it makes him opportunistic! I often tell people love and aggression do not go together, this same fact is true with our alligators. It’s just increased activity. I figured I would finish off this article with some truths and safety advice.

Tips About Gators You Should Know

• Alligators are quick, but they are not going to chase you. You ever hear that you are supposed to run in a zig-zag from alligators? What is the quickest way from one place to the next? It’s always a straight line.

• Use common sense... don’t walk up to one, let him have his space.

• Don’t be near the edge of the water at dawn or dusk as this is their most active times.

• Don’t turn your back to the water or kneel down on the edge. This is making yourself small like a prey item and providing easy access.

• Do not walk your pets near the water’s edge. It doesn’t matter if you have a leash on the animal.

• Do not think that something bad CANNOT happen to you.

• Be aware of your surroundings and don’t be complacent.

• Do not feed the fish, turtles, birds or other wildlife!

What

“Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS

“My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ

ALS - Team TGO Walk... A Great Success

67
Donna Martin, Debbie Grondin, Vicky Hunter and Sherri Hennen were co-chairwomen of the event. Very busy co-chairwomen! There were 49 prizes dontated to the raffle with a fun and energetic crowd buying up the tickets. Teri Witschi enjoys a triple-decker Oreo cookie, compliments of the Hidden Lakes pit stop. Tony DelMonte was up early organizing his courtesy patrol staff and directing traffic. Melanie Matz was on hand to lead all the participants in a Zumba warm-up. Captain Juggles(Peter Maselli) and (Bo Bo) Daniel Parmeggiani, entertained the walkers, stopping to take a picture with Bryce Gick, honorary host of the event. Residents from Hidden Lake put together a pit stop for all the walkers. They had a great group of volunteers handing out water, bananas and Oreo cookies!

NATURE CENTER DECK RAILING

On the day of the vandalism of the Nature Center building in mid-October, there was an altercation on the front deck causing the front deck railing to be damaged. Thanks to some volunteers, the railing has now been repaired. The photo shows most of the craftsmen who worked on repairing the railing. A big Natur e Center thank you to these very talented men!

BETTY SALTER TRAIL

The Betty Salter Trail begins at the first gate after entering the Golf Cart Nature Trail from Raccoon Road. It begins on a berm separating marsh from a wetland that often has standing water. At the drainage canal that borders SJWMD property, turn left to follow the berm toward Buck Lake. Along the way you will pass two natural ponds before arriving at a weir crossing with a coated wire hand rail. The rest of the trail has more shade as you walk through pines, palms and oaks . Distance 1 mile. Betty Salter

INDIAN MOUND TRAIL

Begin the Indian Mound Trail at the gate north of the bridge on the Golf Cart Nature Trail. This trail begins along a fire break which is maintained by St. Johns Water Management, then enters an area where early Native Americans had a seasonal camp. Stopper trees alert you to a change in elevation and vegetation. Follow the red blazes that mark this looping trail. Distance 1.4 miles.

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit self-supporting organization. Donations may be tax deductible.

DID YOU KNOW?

Coral snakes are not very large. Rare specimens may reach 3 feet in length, but most of them are 18 to 20 inches long.

Coral snakes are characterized by specific body coloration which consists of black, red and yellow bands. Some species may have pink or blue bands, while some others lack the bands completely. Head of the coral snake is black and it is hardly distinguished from the tail. Due to similarity between head and tail, snake curls when threatened and exposes its tail to confuse the predator.

Venom produced by the coral snake is the second strongest of all snake venoms. Luckily, back in 1967 anti-venom was produced. Death after the coral snake bite has not been recorded ever since.

Coral snake produces neurotoxic venom which targets brain and nervous system. Sometimes effects of venom can become visible after 12 hours. If not treated with anti -venom, person will experience difficulties with movement and speech, and eventually die as a result of cardiac arrest due to inability to breath. Unlike other venomous snakes, coral snake cannot retract its venomous fangs into the mouth; instead, they are constantly erect.

Coral snake does not have strong or large fangs, so it needs to chew its prey in order to deliver toxin. Leather boots, for example, cannot be penetrated with coral snake's fangs.

TGO ANNUAL SHRED DAY Stuff You Might Want to Know

Wednesday, March 22, 2023 Between 1:00 and 3:00 pm

We have a rain day scheduled for Friday, March 24, if we have to cancel due to weather. In the Manor Parking Lot across from the TGO Church

• If people have old TGO Directories they would like to dispose of, please drop them off at the CSA Office before March 17, 2023 so we can prepare them for shredding.

• No Early Drop-Offs: All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00 pm and must be dropped off before 2:50 pm. Please remain in your vehicle at all times.

• Please remain in your vehicles at all time. If you want to view your items being shredded, you must pull your vehicle out of line but away from the shred truck and volunteers.

• Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring three ring binders, file folders, cardboard, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc. If materials are not readyto-shred, residents will be asked to step out of line to prepare their materials. They may return to the line when materials are suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Marini at 440-829-8633 or email: clmarini@aol.com Sponsored by the CSA and the Safety and Security Committee.
