Nature Center Spring Festival
This past Saturday, on March 11, the Nature Center hosted its Spring Festival and the re-opening of the newly rennovated facility. There were clowns, and owls, and local honey for sale, plus some great pulled-pork sandwiches, baked beans and coleslaw provided by Skinny’s Bar-B-Que. It proved to be a huge success with over 500 people of all ages in attendance. There was also a new flagpole dedication and a ribbon cutting ceremony. It took a lot of volunteers... but it was a lot of fun. Read more starting on page 24

March 17, 2023
Dear TGO Community,
Alligators are on the move and the frequency of encounters and incidents here at TGO has picked up. These warmer-than-average temperatures have them moving between lakes to look for mates. To help us better understand these original Florida natives, we have invited Alligator Frank Robb, a biologist and alligator expert, to lead a presentation for our owners called “Living with Alligators.”This 30-minute presentation is free and open to all owners beginning at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, April 19 in The Manor, just prior to our CSA board meeting which starts at 3:00 pm. Arrive early to get a seat and chat with Alligator Robb one on one. I hope to see you all there for some educational fun.
We had a fi re scare last Friday evening at The Manor during the MGA dinner party. A failed air-handler motor on a rooftop AC unit caused smoke to fi ll the main hall, along with a strong electrical-burning smell. The smoke caused the fi re alarm to alert, and the building was safely evacuated. Titusville Fire Department responded and identified the source of the smoke. They cleared the building for occupancy later that evening. We are working on a repair now, but now I would like to recognize and thank Bob Wilcox for turning off the breakers to the AC units before evacuating the building. I also want to recognize Mo, Beth, Randy, and the entire Blue Heron Restaurant team for their actions to quickly and safely lead an evacuation of the Manor and restaurant.
Next week is your free opportunity to destroy unneeded records and confi dential paperwork. The CSA Safety Committee will host our 4th annual complimentary Shred Day for TGO residents on Wednesday, March 22 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the parking lot north of The Manor. This is a drive-through event. Safety Committee volunteer Cindy Marini will lead a team of volunteers to assist you with boxes. More information and directions are available attheCSAoffi ce and in this issue of The Happenings.
This issue of The Happenings features a photo of the Sawdust Club volunteers who helped to refurbish the golf course water station boxes. These fi ve boxes were originally built by the Sawdust Club many years ago, and recently they were failing due to rusting metal on the inside. These stations are now rebuilt with all-new custom braces and hardware. They’ve been pressure washed and returned on the course, looking brand-new. I wish to thank the Sawdust Club volunteers, and their President, Tim Emerson, for their leadership and willingness to help us keep our golf course in top shape.
If you are reading this far down into my article, then I’ll let you in on a secret. Courtesy Patrol will be doing sometraffi c and speeding enforcement later into the evenings on select nights through April. Speeding seems to be a consistent issue here at TGO, but recently, with so many cars on our roads, we’ve been receiving more concerns and requests for more patrol. Let’s slow down and keep everyone safe!
Twin Lakes Drive owners showed our CSA employee team some hospitality last week. We all enjoyed a complimentary hotdog meal with lots of great cookies, too. On behalf of our team, we send Twin Lakes a BIG thank you for your hospitality and kindness.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht

2023 “MEMBER-MEMBER” Results March 6-10
It was great weather for the final round of the 28th Annual “Member-Member” Tournament! There was a large crowd on hand in the afternoon to watch one flight playoff, the Playoff Shootout and the “$10,000.00 Putt Fore Cash” contest!
Congratulations to Third Flight winners Craig Smith and Rob Condotta who captured this year’s Member-Member title in a two round, alternate shot playoff on hole #18! Congrats also to Tim Heath who wins the putting contest with Ray Dotson and Wayne Condra finishing second and third respectively. The Closing Member-Member Social and Dinner was held at the Plantation Manor. There was a cash bar and a 50/50 drawing as well as the Member-Member dinner and awards presentations! Afterwards, Sammy the Sing DJ entertained the crowd... he was Smoking Hot! So hot, we had to evacuate the Manor so the Titusville Fire Department could do their job. In the end, it was all good, a fun time with bonus entertainment.

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners
1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System.
If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.
2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:
a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.
b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.
c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.
3. What information does the CSA Office need?
a. Tenant Name(s)
b. TGO Address
c. Dates of Arrival/Departure
d. Phone number
e. E-mail Address (optional)
PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE CSA OFFICE
The Great Outdoors - Community Services Association
100-D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780
Phone: 321-268-9767 Fax: 321-268-2380
email: service@tgocsa.com
4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.
• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fi nes and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

TGO Church Holy Land Trip
There were 30 members in our group; mostly TGO residents, mostly members of Great Outdoors Community Church.
Our tour was from February 16 to February 27 (although some of our participants went over early or stayed later).
We were able to worship on the two Sundays we were gone with local congregations and we ate lunch in the homes of congregation members of one of the churches.
Among the places and sights we saw while on the trip were: Baptisms (18 people) in the Jordan river; the ancient city of Jericho; Ein Gedi oasis; Bethlehem; Jerusalem; The Mount of Olives; Gethsemane; the Garden Tomb; Mount Zion; The Upper Room; The Wailing Wall; Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum; Sea of Galilee; Nazareth Village; Mount of Beatitudes; Magdala; Megiddo; Capernaum; Emmaus; Tel Aviv; Jaffa.
It was a trip enjoyed by all.

The public is invited to attend.
Refreshments will be served following the performance.
This photo was taken at the Mount of Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mountain was believed to have been delivered by Jesus. We shared a communion service at this site.
Welcome to the Neighborhood...
New Hidden Lakes residents, Steve and Kelly Mardis, along with their daughter Katie, hosted a pancake breakfast for all Hidden Lakes neighbors on March 1. Living in Harmony with Nature
The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors – the name itself says what it is all about! Let’s take some time to explore more about it and what goes on behind the scenes.
What do you really know about the Nature Center? Have you ever asked yourself: Where do all of the wonderful exhibits come from? Who maintains the building and the grounds? How does the center manage to have the events that it has? Who pays for all of it? Let’s answer some of those questions and many more.
Just a bit of history – from its ramshackle beginnings (donated by none other than Jack Eckerd (of Eckerd’s Pharmacy) to “The Camp” (a vision of Jack’s stepson, Jim Swann), to the building we see today – The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors, Inc. was incorporated in 2006 as a 501c3.
So let’s explore – where do all of the extensive exhibits come from? A good many of them happen to come from our own backyard! Many of the animals, birds, and reptiles displayed live right here in TGO. Yes, there are others represented that come from our surrounding beaches, ocean, and areas, but they are all here in Florida (well, okay, maybe the ostrich and emu eggs were “borrowed” from a zoo ). These displays have been gathered, prepared, put together, and maintained by many people and volunteers over the years. Beyond the displays, there is a wealth of information in the form of brochures, books, videos, and flyers for everyone to read and/or borrow at any time.
The museum and library are the most visible parts of the center, but there are oh, so many other entities that go into it. First and foremost are the volunteers, because without them, the Nature Center would not be what it is! In case you are not aware, there are many opportunities for anyone to volunteer. Just to name a few:
• Opening and Closing each day
• Maintaining the Library
• Public Relations
• Groundskeeping
• Events
• Programs
• Trail Maintenance
• Membership
• Documentation and History
• Board of Directors
As you can see it takes a “village” to keep our Nature Center as amazing as it is. You may not be aware, but there are several committees that address all of the different aspects of maintaining the center and keeping our volunteers very busy. The Events Committee has the enormous task of planning not only the fun “stuff,” like our entry into the annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade, but our fund raising events as well - the Christmas Flea Market, Spring Yard Sale, Nature Center sale at the TGO-wide Garage Sale, Raffles, etc. These fundraising events are imperative to the upkeep and continuation of our Nature Center. The Groundskeeping Committee is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of our lush surroundings including mowing, debris removal, etc. Our Program Committee plans the wonderful and informative programs during the winter season addressing all sorts of Florida specific wildlife and flora and fauna. The Trails Committee works diligently to keep the TGO Trails well marked and maintained so that residents can use them freely.
Membership dues (which are paid annually) in the Nature Center have always been kept to a minimum so anyone wishing to join is able.
Members have the advantage (and luxury) of knowing that their membership fee ($10 per person) goes to benefit us keeping our center viable. And for anyone interested, they can become a lifetime member (which includes their family) for a one time donation of $500. Along with this, members receive a weekly update on any of the activities the Nature Center is holding along with a quarterly newsletter addressing many other poignant facts and issues within our habitat. While membership is encouraged and helps the Nature Center immensely, please know that one does not need to be a member to enjoy the center itself!
The bottom line is the residents of The Great Outdoors have a wonderful asset in having the Nature Center at their disposal for their use and enjoyment. It takes a lot of time, money, and effort to maintain it and volunteers (and donations) are always gladly accepted. Our hope is that information has helped to bring awareness to all the center has to offer and maybe even answered a few of your questions along the way!

We’ve Come A Long Way
The past five months have gone by quickly, but in other ways have seemed to taken years. Within that time the Nature Center Board of Directors, committees, and countless volunteers have managed to repair, make some additions, and refresh the center from the damage done back in October. The Nature Center has been thoroughly cleaned, repainted, repaired, touched up in areas, and things have been added and rearranged. On March 11, we were fortunate enough to hold our Grand Re-opening complete with the cutting of a ribbon and flag dedication which was hung on the new flag pole at the Annual Nature Center Spring Festival!
And what a success we had! Over 500 people of all ages were able to attend our event - it was an amazing turnout! From the ribbon cutting to the flag and flagpole dedication to all of the displays to the “new and improved” Nature Center
“tours,” and even the cooperation of the weather – the day couldn’t have been any better. There were so many wonderful comments during the day about the way the center looks and the recognition of the hours it took to make it happen, it is impossible to repeat, much less remember them all. However, I think one attendee’s comment summed it up very nicely - “It was a terrible thing that happened, but out of that a beautiful new flower was born.”
There were so many volunteers, donated materials, and hours that made it possible for the reopening of the center and for the Spring Festival to be held there, that it is impossible to fit all of the thank-you’s in at one time. We would like EVERYONE who gave their time and/or donation (no matter how short/long or big/small) to know that we are eternally grateful! Going forward we will take these opportunities to make some special appreciations.

Meet Angel and Mary Echevarria
One thing that was on everyone’s mind after our experience was, of course, security in the future. A family living here in TGO stepped forward, offering not only their time, but also the equipment to install an entire security system. The Nature Center is now equipped with eight cameras and a monitoring system with video back-up thanks to Angel and Mary Echevarria. Angel worked over several days along with some of his staff to accomplish everything within a very short amount of time. Their company is iSecure Technologies and they have had this business for several years.
Angel and Mary have four children, of whom three (13, 11, and 9) are homeschooled. Angel is originally from Chicago, Illinois and Mary a lifetime Floridian. The oldest son is a nurse in Sarasota. They originally lived in Titusville, but started renting while trying to sell their house and loved it so much, made it a permanent move. They officially moved into TGO this past August and love it here. They commented that everyone here has been very friendly and welcoming. Their first comment in starting our conversation was how much they love the Nature Center and how important it is to our community. With their children being homeschooled, they love how the center is a wonderful asset to be able to weave into their education. The large variety of displays, the library, and the nature trails are all such wonderful resources and benefits to their schooling. In addition, being able to utilize the rooms for activities is a great opportunity. Without such volunteers within our community, the Nature Center would not be what it is today - especially when you have a family such as the Echevarrias who put the value on the customer/recipient’s happiness as first and foremost.

The replacement of the Sawdust Club Roof, one of our 2023 improvement projects, is now completed. Above are before and after drone photos. This is a urethane roof which was the best solution determined to cover the metal roof with its many joints, and comes with a 5-year workmanship warranty and a life expectancy minimum of 50 years. Sawdust club members are reporting a drop in temperature inside as the urethane coating is serving as a great insulator for the metal roof, which should help with energy consumption especially during the summer.Thank you to Sawdust Club president Tim Emerson for his efforts to champion this project.
A special thanks to all the Sawdust Club members who helped restore the water stations for our TGO Golf Course. If you are a golfer, you appreciate how important these stations are.

Whether it is in California’s high country, with a home on several acres, or in TGO on a property that measures 600 square feet, the common concern is Landscaping. Your approach to landscaping may be minimalist: a cut, edged and irrigated green lawn. CSA takes care of that. Keeping dead-fall branches, leaves and palm fronds from accumulating is up to you. Your spin on landscaping may be utilitarian or it may be beautiful, but it must be FIREWISE. The design of your landscaping should discourage the extension of a wildfire into our community and into your home.
Let’s Talk Mulch!
Mulch is used around the bases of trees and bushes, along walks, in flower beds and to define limits in a garden. It helps control weed growth and it holds in moisture that would otherwise easily evaporate from exposed soil. Mulch should be put down with an underlying membrane that allows water to penetrate but inhibits upward weed growth.
What Kind Of Mulch?
Not all mulch is the same! Pine Needle Mulch is quite popular in the Carolinas. It would be a poor choice in TGO. It makes excellent tinder when dry, due to the surface area of the needles and its content of combustible oils and resins. Do Not Use Pine Mulch!
Wood Chip Mulch (Cypress Mulch) is better than pine needles for non-flamablility. It holds water well; however it rots and degrades. Wood Chip Mulch requires “periodic replacement.”
Rubber Mulch, made from chopped up recycled tires lasts long. It may last too long! It will burn but is not easy to ignite. Once burning, it is not easy to extinguish! It supports weed growth but is easy to keep weeded.
Hardscape Mulch is simply rocks. It comes in a variety of “grades.” The smallest grade is “Pea Rock,” which is quarried limestone from Florida. It is white, cheap, and local. Pea Rock can be used to “pave” a driveway, build a garden path, or define limits in a garden. Larger hardscape mulch is called “River Rock.” It is the usual rock mulch that is available, bagged, in our area. It is excellent for mulching. It is certainly “fireproof” and it is available at most hardware and garden supply stores.
Now that you’re mulch savvy you may need guidance regarding the plantings in your fire-resistant property. For more information on “Landscaping in Florida With Fire In Mind,” check the free brochure of the same name at the CSA Office or the Nature Center Library.

Clearing The TGO Fire Breaks
The week of February 27 thru March 3, 2023, the Florida Forest Service (FFS) was in TGO clearing the Fire Breaks behind the Library and properties on Plantation Drive from Racoon to Oak Cove. These Fire Breaks have not been cleared in over 20 years and are used, as the name indicates, to provide a break to hinder the progress of a wildfire as well as providing access for firefighting activities. The FFS uses hand tools as well as some machines that cut down and shred small trees and ground litter in these breaks.
Prescribed Burns are used to burn off all the dead and combustible materials on the forest floor to reduce the spread of fires that may get started in these areas. Many of you may not know that there are several trees in that area that are burned, after having been struck by lightning. Fortunately, they were extinguished by the accompanying rain, however, this is not always the case. The FFS will conduct a Prescribed Burn in this area when the fire breaks are cleaned and all the factors, such as wind, humidity, barometric pressure, and ground moisture, are safe for the burn to begin. These burns are conducted in coordination with the Florida Forest Service, Brevard County Fire Rescue, St John’s River Water Management District, TGO Firewise Committee and the CSA staff. There will be more on this as the prescribed burn time gets closer.

Is a Roth IRA Conversion Right For You?
Do you have a traditional IRA? Depending on your circumstances, it might make sense for you to convert all or a portion of it to a Roth IRA. And this year may be a particularly good time to take action.
Why? Because, as you know, 2022 has been rough for the financial markets, so the value of your investments may be down. And that means you’d pay fewer taxes upon converting your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA than you might if the markets were up and your investment were worth more.
Still, you’ll have to have money available to pay the taxes due on the conversion, which can be considerable. Or you could spread the total amount converted over several years to possibly lower the tax impact.
A conversion could ultimately be worth it. A Roth IRA provides tax-free earnings and withdrawals, provided you meet certain conditions. And since these withdrawals don’t count against your income, they won’t add to your Social Security taxes or bump up your Medicare premiums when you’re retired.
Consult with your tax advisor before launching a Roth IRA conversion. It’s a big move - so you’ll want to make sure it’s right for you.

What
“Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS
“My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ

Automatic Running Lights
Tips From Your TGO CSA Patrol
Why do cars have AUTO daytime headlights, otherwise known as “Running Lights?”
The purpose of DRLs is not to illuminate the view in front of your car. Instead, they make your car more visible to the drivers and pedestrians you’re approaching. Consequently, they point forward rather than downward as headlights and fog lights do.
Why do some cars with AUTO headlights not automatically turn on the tail lights?
The automatic lights are likely the Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs). These are an automatic safety feature that is more for other drivers around you than for your driving comforts. This system does not turn on the tail lights, and they are dimmer than your normal headlights. You may often see drivers in rain or dark conditions without taillights and have, dim headlights. These people are likely not paying attention to their vehicle. Look to your owner’s manual for more information on the lights and how to best utilize them.
This being said, many people “ASSUME” all their lights are on when they start the car in the morning, or as the day turns to night, they assume that because they see the light of their headlights that their tails lights must also be on. That’s NOT the case.
The other morning, a very foggy morning here in TGO, I witnessed some vehicles going by and as they passed by they were then vanished in the fog because of the lights not being on in the rear. A white box truck seemed to literally disappeared in the fog when he drove by with no rear lights on. These vehicles were easy targets for getting rearended as they could not be seen.
Don’t let this happen to you. Read your vehicle manual or better yet, GET OUT and check.
Fawn Trail Annual Luncheon
It was another great annual luncheon on Fawn Trail brought to you by Pat and Nancy Matroniano. Most of the neighbors were in attendance along with a few party crashers from The Happenings . All the neighbors chipped in with a dish - It was a fun time for all! Great broccoli salads!

TGO ANNUAL SHRED DAY
Wednesday, March 22, 2023 Between 1:00 and 3:00 pm
We have a rain day scheduled for Friday, March 24, if we have to cancel due to weather. In the Manor Parking Lot across from the TGO Church
• If people have old TGO Directories they would like to dispose of, please drop them off at the CSA Office before March 17, 2023 so we can prepare them for shredding.
• No Early Drop-Offs: All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00 pm and must be dropped off before 2:50 pm. Please remain in your vehicle at all times.
• Please remain in your vehicles at all time. If you want to view your items being shredded, you must pull your vehicle out of line but away from the shred truck and volunteers.
• Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring three ring binders, file folders, cardboard, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc. If materials are not readyto-shred, residents will be asked to step out of line to prepare their materials. They may return to the line when materials are suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Marini at 440-829-8633 or email: clmarini@aol.com
Sponsored by the CSA and the Safety and Security Committee.
