Meet Ron Peoples
As we have always said, TGO is blessed with a great group of volunteers. In this issue, we take a closer look at Ron Peoples and his contributions to our park. Ron and his wife, Dori, who is also a volunteer, have lived in TGO for seven years. If you know Ron, then you know he is not the type of guy to just waste time - he needs to be busy, and he has found lots of projects here to help him do just that. He volunteers at the Nature Center, works with the Firewise Committee, and, most recently, has taken on the responsibility of overseeing the bi-annual fish stocking of our 32 lakes. Ron is always the first guy to step up and help out. We're lucky he is part of TGO. More on page 26...
On The Cover Of The Hap-pen-iiiiingggs
This one is way overdue! If you made one of the Variety Show performances this spring at the Manor, then you know that the On The Cover Of The Happenings song was debuted. It was a parody of the famous Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's On the Cover Of The Rolling Stone song, that was a huge hit back in 1972. It was 50 years ago on March 29, 1973 that Dr. Hook actually made that cover, so we thought we should honor our four (five with a surprise appearance) local performers with the same honor - appearing on the cover of The Happenings. It was a TGO crowd favorite and the words to their version can be found on page 35.

Manager’s Corner
April 28, 2023
Dear TGO Community,
We are The Great Outdoors, and living in harmony with wildlife is at the core of who we are as a community. The alligator attack on our friend and neighbor at Windsong Way on April 14 was terrible and shocking. As a community, we must work harder to understand our wildlife, educate our guests and newcomers, and prevent another attack. Last week we held a community-wide presentation from alligator expert and biologist Frank Robb. Frank offered us an excellent presentation with interesting facts and unique challenges of living with alligators at TGO. This was followed by many questions and answers. Frank shared a few items that concerned our owners and led to more questions after the presentation. I spoke to Frank following the presentation and want to clarify a few items with you:
• Not all TGO ponds are connected by culverts large enough to allow alligators to pass underground. Some of our ponds are not connected by culverts at all. Alligators walking from pond to pond, or resting between ponds, have not been considered a “nuisance” here at TGO in the past. Especially in the Spring, alligators have always been spotted “on the move” and our community knows to respect their space and get out of their way. After all, they were here first. Alligator Robb stated that a safe distance is 15 feet.
• Florida’s SNAP program defines a nuisance alligator as “one that is at least 4 feet in length and is believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.” SNAP has no other information to define a nuisance alligator. It is absolutely necessary to remove alligators from TGO who are showing no fear of humans, following humans and causing you concern. Frank Robb said that if an alligator is fed even once by a human, it can immediately become a nuisance and must be destroyed. This is unfortunate and preventable.
• The SNAP program states that “Callers must be able to grant legal access to the property on which the alligator is located and does not permit the removal of nuisance alligators from private land without first obtaining permission from the property owner or management authority.” Trappers must have permission to enter TGO through our entrance gate. In most cases, trappers will need to remove a nuisance alligator from our CSA managed ponds. You may call SNAP directly, but then you must take responsibility for the trapper as your guest, and they must access alligators from your property only. Please consider calling me or our CSA administration staff at the CSA office to discuss your alligator concern first, and allow the CSA to assist you and make the call to SNAP on your behalf as needed.
After the attack, I was with the FWC officers and trapper while they destroyed the attacking alligator and another smaller gator who followed the officers and obviously had lost its fear of humans. The very next day, another alligator was destroyed from that same pond. This attack is still under investigation. Each of the responding officers told me the same thing: These alligators were most likely being fed and had lost their fear of humans. This information was troubling to hear. There is NO tolerance for feeding alligators at TGO. If you witness an alligator being fed at TGO, please take a photo if possible, and report this to the CSA, and your name will be kept anonymous. We will investigate and report the offense to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Florida law makes it a crime to harass or feed an alligator. Anyone caught is subject to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has a ton of information on their website regarding alligators and how to live peacefully and safely around them. Here is the website link, I hope you’ll check it out: https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/wildlife/alligator/.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

The Game: Hatfields vs McCoys - Net Score
You can’t write the script any better than what transpired on Men’s Day, April 19. Twenty-two men ventured out for 18 holes of golf. Two teams, the Hatfields vs the McCoys in what was billed a “mini” Spring Cup. The game was total NET scores for each team.
It was apparent as the final scores were posted that it was going to be close. How close? How 'bout dead even! A tie! 850 total strokes for each side. A chip-off ensued with Harold Gero and Scotty Lewis representing the Hatfields and Ken O’Dea and Tom Golden representing the McCoys. Ken O’Dea put the pressure on with the first shot (chipping green to #18) and the Hatfields could not better his distance from the hole. Thus, the McCoys claimed bragging rights until the next feud.
Harold Gero led all scorers with a net 65 and also claimed closest to hole honors on #4. The winning team members of the McCoys were: Ken O’Dea, Tom Robbins, Tom Golden, John Gero, Roy Brown, Jim Marigliano, Bobby Ward, John Johndrow, Mike Pascuzzo, Joe Porta and Ray Dotson

Co-Existing With TGO's Alligators
Before the board meeting on Wednesday, April 19, Biologist and Crocodilian Expert, Frank "Alligator Robb" gave an excellent presentation with facts concerning alligators and some of the challenges we have at TGO. I hope you were able to attend. If not, we are working to post the slides from his presentation to our CSA website. We encourage you to use the information he provided to determine if an alligator is actually a nuisance or aggressive. If you determine that an alligator is aggressive and needs to be removed, you may contact the CSA office and they will contact SNAP on your behalf. CSA can then contact the trapper and ensure he has access to enter TGO and remove the dangerous alligator. This should speed up the process.
In addition to Robb, Captain Sean Gaudion, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was on hand to share his experiences with the FWC, also providing some good information.
The bottom line is that, as residents, we all need to be aware of our surroundings, especially when we are near any of our lakes. Also, during the times of the year that the alligators are moving throughout the park, searching for a mates and/or food.
Be extra careful when you are walking your pets and while golfing, and abide by the rules listed to the right.
Below are a few of the details of the Florida Alligator Management Program from their website for your information.
Florida’s Alligator Management Program has five separate divisions, one of which is the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP). Should an alligator come lumbering into your yard, you can call SNAP toll-free at 866-FWC-GATOR, and they will send a nuisance alligator trapper to come to collect it. But there’s a catch. The alligator must be at least four feet long before Florida law considers it to officially be a nuisance. The state takes the position that shorter alligators are incapable of causing harm, even to household pets, unless they’re handled. Of course, this can leave you between a rock and a hard place because removing the alligator yourself may involve handling it. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t risk harm. Call SNAP anyway and ask what you should do or call your local animal control agency.
Laws Regarding Trapping or Killing Alligators in Florida
It’s a third-degree felony under Florida law to kill or injure an alligator, so don’t try to poison one to get rid of it. It is also a felony to capture and keep an alligator or its eggs unless you purchase a special alligator trapping or farming license from the state.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• DO NOT FEED ALLIGATORS - It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve for your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners
1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System.
If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.
2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:
a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.
b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.
c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.
3. What information does the CSA Office need?
a. Tenant Name(s)
b. TGO Address
c. Dates of Arrival/Departure
d. Phone number
e. E-mail Address (optional)
PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE CSA OFFICE

100-D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780
Phone: 321-268-9767 Fax: 321-268-2380
email: service@tgocsa.com
4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.
• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Getting to Know Our TGO CSA Maintenance Crews
Meet Jonathan Lyerly and Josh Faiga
As stated before, the maintenance crews here in TGO are the best of the best and an extremely hard working group! This week it’s time to learn about the Utilities Crew and introduce you to Jonathan Lyerly and Josh Faiga.
Jonathan lives here in TGO (you’ve all seen that cute little house right by the Addison Canal bridge). He is the Lead for the Utilities Crew. and a native Floridian. He is the oldest of three with a brother and a sister. He also has a son and daughter of his own. In his spare time (I should say, when he has some, as he is on call 24/7) he enjoys surfing and golfing. Jonathan was in the area to buy a truck, happened across TGO, and decided to apply for a job.
Well, that was 10 years ago and he is still working hard and enjoying it here.
Josh is also a native Floridian, growing up in Rockledge with two brothers. He too has a son and a daughter and enjoys coaching his son’s Little League team. In his spare time he enjoys camping. Josh has been at TGO for three years after seeing the job online and applying for it.
Jonathan and Josh work as a team on the Utilities Crew and, after talking with them, I found out just how involved and diverse their jobs really are! Just to name a few of their duties:
• They do potable water repairs
• Work on low flow issues
• Relocate utilities
• Replace irrigation valves
• Work on wiring issues on irrigation clocks They are also on hand for any on-going projects in the park. Basically, they are “Jacks of all trades," however insert “Masters of all” instead of none!

Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass.
We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Home Fires by Ed
Brown
We have discussed Wildland Fires, House Fires and now… HOME FIRES. So, what makes the Home Fire a different species of fire? How do we define a home fire? The home fire does not need an outside cause. Unlike a wildland fire which can extend to your house and transform it to a heap of smoking cinders, the home fire starts inside your home and spreads. It does its sneaky deeds while you’re sleeping or out shopping, or while visiting friends in Melbourne. Undetected, it can ravage your home in secret until a neighbor notices smoke and flames as the fire vents through your roof or your smoke detector gives its alarm. When was the last time you checked the batteries in your smoke detectors?
If you keep cooking oil in the kitchen, you should keep it away from the stove or anything that could spark (source of ignition) and cause a fire. The same goes for gasoline (in approved containers), paint and painting products (mineral spirits, acetone, resins, etc).
Your clothes dryer: Check the filter whenever you dry a load of laundry! A filter jammed full of lint, combined with dryer heat, is a major cause of home fires. Your dryer and even your dishwasher use a decent amount of heat, as do space heaters, heating pads and electric blankets. Don’t leave these heat-producing devices running when you’re not home! They can easily provide a source of ignition for a Home Fire.
Cigarettes have long been a source of ignition for Home Fires. Smoking in bed or a comfortable chair and dozing off has resulted in bed fires, home fires, and smoker fatalities. Even if a cigarette is crushed out, it contains a variety of additives and materials in its make-up that can continue to burn. With nobody around to notice, that rekindled “cig” could start a Home Fire. Check your Home Electrical System frequently. Are there any wall sockets that don’t work or GFIs that require frequent resetting? Have you run any appliance cords under carpet? If any of the answers are “yes,” have the problem repaired ASAP. There are handymen and technicians here in TGO who can help if your mechanical or electrical skills are weak.
HOME FIRES can be costly on many levels. Avoid the fires that can attack from inside your home and, while you’re at it, update your home evacuation plan, if necessary.

So, what exactly is the difference between a Tortoise and a Turtle?
Strictly speaking, all tortoises are turtles, however not all turtles are tortoises. Confused yet?
• Tortoise shells are more rounded and domed, while turtles have a thinner, more streamlined shell conducive to swimming.
• The key difference between the two is that tortoises spend most of their time on land while turtles are adapted for life in the water.
• Turtles have webbed feet with flipper-like legs to assist them in the water, while tortoises have more club-like forelegs and “elephantine” like hind legs. After all, they carry a bit more weight than a turtle. Here in The Great Outdoors, we are fortunate to have many different species of tortoises/turtles and are privileged to have and maintain a Gopher Tortoise Habitat. By Florida State Law, both the Gopher Tortoises and their burrows are protected and one must have a permit through the Florida Wildlife Commission to move them from their property.
Interesting Gopher Tortoise Facts:
• They are found in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
• Their average length is 9 to 11 inches although some have been found up to 15 inches.
• Juveniles are orange/yellow and brown in color while adults are gray or brown.
• You can tell the difference between male and female because females will have a flat bottom shell while males will have a concavity to the back of his bottom shell.
• Their life span is 40 to 60 years.
• The breeding season is typically from March to June and females typically will drop five to nine ping-pongsized eggs in the opening to their burrow, known as the apron. Incubation lasts 80 to 110 days
• Gopher Tortoises are herbivores and will typically feast on vegetation within about 160 feet of their bur-
row. They will travel further if vegetation is not readily available
The Gopher Tortoise lives in burrows which they dig with their club-shaped front legs. Burrows can be up to 40 feet long and 10 feet deep and are just wide enough for the tortoise to be able to turn around. They also may use more than one burrow or even have interconnected tunnels. Hatchlings will sometimes use an adult burrow or may dig one of their own. The tortoise burrows also offer refuge to some 360 other animal species as they provide shelter in extreme temperatures, drought, and fire. Some of the species that take advantage of the burrows include the gopher frog, snakes, opossum, armadillo, scarab beetles, burrowing owl, and gopher cricket. Some, such as the Florida mouse, would not exist if it were not for the tortoise burrow.
Our Gopher Tortoise habitat is located along the south end of the dog walk. Volunteers work diligently (with advice from experts) to maintain the habitat to best benefit the tortoises. They need a clean area around their burrows to get sun and possibly (and hopefully) lay their eggs. The habitat “houses” approximately a dozen active burrows, and tortoises can sometimes be spotted out in the open filling their bellies. Because the habitat is along the dog walk, it is very important to remember that there are no pets allowed in the habitat.
Gopher Tortoises are a very important component of the Florida ecosystem, and while their habitat has been diminished over the years, we all need to do our part in protecting them for future generations to enjoy.

Getting to Know Ron Peoples
The Great Outdoors has some really great residents and one of those is none other than Ron Peoples. Ron and his wife, Dori, have been at TGO for seven years and are very active in the community.
Ron was originally from Massachusetts before his family moved to Maine and then eventually Florida in 1959. He is the oldest of his brother and sister and the proud father of two girls and grandfather of two. Ron’s career provided a lot of travelling as he was a photojournalist for WESH2 and worked on their satellite uplink trucks until he retired in 2005.
Dori and Ron met in 2001 and were married in 2008, after dating for seven years, in Boot Key, Marathon, Florida, on Earth Day, and began enjoying the wonders of life and travel by land and sea. Their first adventures were by sea after purchasing a 36-foot trawler in 2005 and living on it full time for seven years. After experiencing the waterways, they decided to continue by highway and purchased an RV, and again, they lived in it full time for the next seven years. Ron stated one of the most interesting benefits of having lived and traveled on/in a boat and an RV was that they were able to see things by water and then go back and see them again from the land perspective.
• Ron spends a lot of his time working with the Nature Center where he was previously the Board VP. He heads up the grounds maintenance including mowing, yard clean-up, takes care of repairs that are needed on either the building or the surroundings, and even hoisted the new flag pole with the help of other volunteers. Dori has assisted with different aspects of the NC as well by working on the various sales and cleaning the center. While Ron may head up the groundskeeping at the NC, Dori heads up the groundskeeping at home!
Ron and Dori first learned about TGO when they came here to look at RVs and fell in love with the place and area. They rented for seven years (I can’t help but think seven might be a favorite number!) on Oak Cove and Coach Club before purchasing a home on Sunset then moving to Dragonfly. When it was time to stay put and sell their RV, it was back to the boating with the purchase of a pontoon boat - relaxation was in order. However, relaxing is not necessarily Ron’s “middle name,” so he became very active in volunteering in the community. Here is some of his volunteer work:
• He works with the fish releases that take place at least twice a year for the upkeep of the quality of our lakes and ponds. Dori keeps all the volunteers straight as to what pond/lake they are going to and how many fish they will need to distribute.
• The Sawdust Club is a large part of Ron’s life. He works tirelessly helping to maintain the club, and works on many community projects like making crosses for the residents for Easter. The club will do small projects for the community, especially when someone might not have the tools or skills to do what they need done. While woodworking may not be his "forte," he loves doing it and learning as he goes along.
• Ron is also very active on the Firewise Committee - attending meetings, working on issues to keep TGO and its residents prepared in the event of a fire emergency, and assists with efforts to clear brush, vines, etc. that are potentially fuel for a wildfire.
Ron enjoys keeping busy and finds there are so many different ways to do so here in TGO. He also loves helping people and it shows in everything he does. The Great Outdoors is so very fortunate to have such a “Friend of the Community."

Relaxation is not Ron’s “middle name,” so he became very active in volunteering in the community.

The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary
It is only six miles away or a ten minute drive - just one of the many reasons the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary should be on your short list of local places to visit. Considered a“Flagship” sanctuary, the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary is the first property that was purchased by the Brevard County EEL (Environmentally Endangered Land) Program. This 470-acre forest is part of a sanctuary network that the EEL Program is working to establish in the county.
The Sanctuary preserves a diversity of natural habitats. Several miles of hiking trails allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. Wildlife observation, nature photography, and hiking are popular recreational activities. There are over 250 species of plants and about 150 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and butterflies as both temperate (northern) and subtropical (southern) species grow in the Sanctuary together. There are five basic habitat types found at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary: Oak scrub, mesic and hydric hammock, wet prairie, and pine flatwood. Wildlife species found here include the Eastern indigo snake, Florida scrub lizard, gopher tortoise, white-tailed deer, and bobcat.
The Management & Education Center is filled with information and interactive exhibits about the habitats and history of this corner of Titusville and interprets the Sanctuary’s unique natural features for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The Hike
From the moment you step out of your car at the trailhead, you realize this is a magical place. It has a little bit of everything, including historic sites and geological oddities. There are massive trees, gardens, and a diverse amount of habitats along its trail system, with the spine of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge a prominent landform down the middle. There are many routes you can take to hike the trails at the Enchanted Forest, so roaming this mosaic of habitats never grows old. All hikes, however, start at the nature center. Sign in at the “Hike Desk” before you head out on the trail system, and grab a trail map here (or take a photo of the map kiosk before you start).
Check out the displays in the nature center first to help with your understanding of the historic sites and habitats along the trails. Just past the nature center entrance is the main trailhead, marked with signage. Clear signage is throughout the preserve at all junctions. Your first decision point comes at the map. The Biodiversity Loop goes straight ahead, while the Enchanted Crossing is an accessible path to the left. At the junction with Enchanted Crossing, continue straight ahead along the Biodiversity Loop. The trail immediately reaches a T intersection. To
the right is a gate leading out to the parking lot. Turn left. You’re walking along the edge of a scrub forest on a well-groomed footpath, with aromatic silk bay providing some shade.
The oak canopy is a good representative upland forest with a lot of young shrubs in the understory. The trail continues up a gentle slope. You will come to a junction with a bench atop the Atlantic Coast Ridge. This ridge outcrops in many places along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, most notably in places like the Coquina Beach at Washington Oaks State Park, Blowing Rocks in Jupiter, and in downtown Coconut Grove. It’s a long spine of coquina shells compressed over the ages into a ribbon of eroding limestone, and comprises some of the highest points along Florida’s Atlantic Coast.
Many settlers passed through here on the Hernandez -Capron Trail, an old military trail laid out by General Joseph Hernandez. It was built by his men in 1837, during the Second Seminole War...
Here, it signals a segue in habitat to young scrub on white sand with little to no shade overhead. The junction is with the Ridge Trail. Turn right. The Ridge Trail works its way along the ecotone between the high open ridge and the upland forest. You pass a bench, and there’s a tall magnolia tree up ahead. At the next junction with the Tortoise Trail, there are a couple of benches. Turn right to head downhill into the shade.
30
The Tortoise Trail makes a quick decent from the scrub into a forest dense with magnolias, oaks, cabbage palms, and saw palmetto. Cabbage palms tower overhead as you reach the junction with the Mesic Trail. Continue straight. The trail ascends up a slight rise and a reaches a multi-trail junction with a kiosk and a gathering of benches. You’ve walked 0.8 mile.
Start the Magnolia Loop by turning right. This is one of the highlights of the preserve, so don’t skip it! Lushly canopied, it starts off by passing a large live oak with an unusual curl to its trunk. Wild coffee fills the understory, and cabbage palms rise high overhead. Pieces of old oak trees bring new life to the forest floor. Sphagnum moss carpets fallen logs. One log hosts a variety of fungi; the next, a natural fernery for sword ferns. The trail continues to descend, and you walk under the large limbs of an ancient live oak. Curving left, it ascends slowly and makes a banked curve to the right and downhill. You see more tall cabbage palms rising ahead. As the trail continues to descend, there is a floodplain forest off to the right behind a screen of trees. The trail comes up to a magnificent oak with a cabbage palm growing straight up the middle. Towering southern magnolias are next along their namesake trail. Around each corner, there are more massive oaks and magnolias.
Wild citrus, including oranges and grapefruit, grow in this part of the forest. Many settlers passed through here on the Hernandez-Capron Trail, an old military trail laid out by General Joseph Hernandez. It was built by his men in 1837, during the Second Seminole War, to link the fortresses at St. Augustine and Fort Pierce.
The trail enters an unusual little forest, a “forest within a forest” at 1.1 miles, a dense stand of yaupon holly. This holly is notable for its tiny leaves and for the use of its berries to create cassina, the highly-caffeinated “black drink” of the Seminoles
and other more ancient Floridians. Keep to the right at the fork in the trail. Emerging into a paradise of palms, oaks, and ferns, the trail leads you down a corridor of tall cabbage palms. There’s dark earth underfoot, an area that may get damp after heavy rains, with more massive oaks spreading their thickly knotted root systems across the trail. Passing through a stand of marlberry and wild coffee, the trail begins a slightly incline upwards, and there are now tall slash pines making up the canopy. Dropping down, the trail skirts the floodplain forest and heads into another palm hammock.
The swamp in the forest, downhill and to the right, becomes more obvious around 1.4 miles, with bubbles rising to its surface from gasses emitted by rotting leaves beneath the water. The trail continues to rise away from it. The trail keeps up a mild uphill beneath the palms, and the footpath broadens and becomes easy to walk once again– no more gatorbacks to trip over. Continued...

The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary
After you pass a bench, you’re back at the clearing where the Magnolia Loop began, after 1.7 miles. Turn right to follow the Tomoka Trail to stay on the outer loop of the trail system. The trail immediately drops down through a tunnel of vines, with cabbage palms providing the canopy. There is a bench at the beginning of a boardwalk that works its way through the floodplain forest. Strap ferns sprout from fallen logs like bright green feathers. Open pools of clear tannic water are edged by ferns.
Reaching the Biodiversity Loop junction, turn right to stay on the outer loop. It immediately becomes a boardwalk through more floodplain forest. The Addison/Ellis Canal affects the hydrology of this landscape. The trail narrows down and becomes a bit bumpy as it parallels the canal. The trail narrows into a long corridor, with the Addison/Ellis Canal hidden off to your right behind a tall levee topped with dense forest. Bromeliads drape from tree limbs.
Just beyond the junction with the Mesic Trail, the Coquina Trail veers off to the right. Turn and follow it downhill. It has a nice narrow descent and a wooden bridge over the canal. Benches on the far side of the canal provide a scenic view. As the trail turns left, it parallels the canal, and it’s a very steep drop – an actual cliff – down to the bottom of the canal. Several overlooks along the Coquina Trail provide an excellent view of the canal.
Started in 1912, the Addison/Ellis Canal was probably meant to drain the extensive wetlands between the St. Johns River and the Indian River Lagoon for development. Remains of the canal stretch from the Canaveral Marshes along SR 50 under I-95 to the Enchanted Forest, where construction abruptly ended when the diggers hit the impenetrable Atlantic Coastal Ridge, ruined their equipment, and went bankrupt. Here’s where you need to keep an eye on the kids. Steep cliffs and poison ivy provide hazards off to your left.
After 2.1 miles, the landscape opens up in front of you. You’re back on the top of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, with scrub a sharp contrast to the leafy glade of cabbage palms along the canal. A bench sits off to the right and unmarked trails vanish into the distance. Ignore them and continue paralleling the canal. You’ll be rewarded with some excellent views of the geologic formations where the ridge was cut deeply into. Strap fern clings to boulders on the far rock face. The terrain here is undulating.
As the trail drops down off the ridge, it is soft sand underfoot, much like climbing down through dunes. A large gopher tortoise burrow is off to the right. The trail is broad, open and sunny here. As the trail narrows, curves, and drops down lower, it is lined with young cabbage palms. You emerge within sight
of the nature center and a historic marker for the canal. Slices of coquina, shot through with solution holes, are centerpieces in a garden of native plants. Work your way through the garden and back past the nature center. Be sure to sign out at the Hike Desk on your way out!
The nature center has a nice gift shop inside as well as restrooms and a water fountain. Guided tours are available for persons of limited mobility. Pets are not permitted. Neither are bicycles.

After four years, the "What's Their Name" band finally makes the cover of The Happenings.
Yes, it was 50 years ago when Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show finally made the cover of the Rollings Stone and now TGO's What's Their Name band can share the same honor, but with The Happenings .
Jack Hennen, Jeff Alpert, Dave Poplawski, and Warren Fore, along with Sammy, the Singin' DJ, put on back-to-back performances at this year's Variety Show... but it took a while to get there.
Back in 2020, after more than two months of rehearsing as ukulele players, the Variety Show was canceled because of COVID.
In 2021 there was still no Variety Show, mainly due to COVID... again.
But the Variety Show team still wanted a performance of "On The Cover of The Happenings" to be part of their 2022 return, but the group could not commit because of various reasons
Finally, this year, the "What's Their Name" band committed to perform at this year's shows - this time as guitar players - and with an updated version with some new lyric revisions.
All four band members were part of the ukulele club, which is why their original version of "On The Cover of The Happenings" was written for ukuleles. They decided they wanted to do a song for the variety show in 2020, but didn't want to just cover a song, so they decided to do a parody, which is when the song was originally written. After Covid and the loss of the Jukebox Cafe, the lyrics of the original parody were rewritten and this was when Sammy was written into the song. Sherri (Hennen) told Sammy about the song, so he read the lyrics, thought they were great and said he would like to be a part of the show. And as they say... The rest is history!

Funny Thing Is…
I’ve loved baseball since before I could walk but, while watching my favorite team last night, I realized there are some things about the game that just don’t add up. The average salary in major league baseball is over a million dollars a year. The AVERAGE! When you’re batting in baseball, if you are successful more than 20% of the time, you’re said to be a good hitter. If you’re successful more than 30% of the time, you’re going to the All Star Game, and if you’re successful 40% of the time, they make a plaster bust of you and put it in the Hall of Fame. Now, I’m a practical guy and I know for a fact if you flip burgers for a living and mess up 60% of the time, you’re out of a minimum wage job, but if baseball was Burger King, you would be invited to take over the company. Imagine botching up six out of every 10 burgers and having Hollywood starlets calling YOU for a date. Lifetime 300. hitters in baseball earn multi-millions when playing and afterwards are given extremely rich salaries to coach or do color commentary on TV and teach people how to fail 70% of the time. Really? These numbers just don’t add up! Want more mystery? Ok, I’m a big fan, so I go to a game, spend anywhere from $25 to $2,500 for my ticket, buy the most expensive hot dog on the face of the earth and a cloudy looking overpriced beer to wash it down, take my seat and when my favorite player comes to bat, I know I’ll be depressed seven out of 10 times when he’s done, and I’m ok with that. See what I mean, it just doesn’t add up. I’m looking in the mirror after concluding a 34 year career in NASA and wondering how, with all the improvements to humanity NASA has accomplished, a 22-year-old kid named Will can out earn my entire career in one sixmonth season of baseball. Man, I wish I could have hit a curveball.

Four Snakes To Look Out For In TGO
With the weather heating up, now is the time to be careful when walking on the trails or walking your dog - even in your own yard. There are 50 species of snakes found in multiple habitats throughout Florida. Only six of the 50 are venomous, and of the six venomous snakes, only four might be found in TGO. They include the Coral snake, the Cottonmouth, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, and the Pygmy Rattlesnake. Please be aware of your surroundings.
1. Coral Snake
Adults average 20-30 inches. The record is 47.5 inches. This thin, smooth-scaled snake has narrow yellow rings that separate the wider red and black rings. Unlike the pit vipers, the coral snake’s pupils are round. The key to distinguish the venomous snake from the harmless Scarlet Kingsnake is the color pattern. “Red touches yellow, it can kill a fellow; red touches black, it’s a friend to Jack.”
2. Cottonmouth Snake or Water Moccasin
Adults average 20-48 inches. The record is 74.5 inches. They are dark colored and heavy bodied snakes. Juveniles have reddish brown bands on a brownish background; the pattern slowly blends into a uniform dark brown or black as adults. To distinguish this venomous snake from any of the harmless water snakes, look for the eyes. You cannot see the eyes of the cottonmouth from above; and if you do see the eyes from the side, the pupils are vertical or “cat-like.” Water snakes have round pupils. They are found near the water or marshy grass areas.
3. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
Adults average 36-72 inches. The record is 96 inches. They have a large brownish thick body which has black diamonds with brown centers and a pale outline running down the back to the rattle tipped tail. The head is large and heavy appearing with a diagonal black stripe encasing each eye. There are deep facial pits between each eye and nostril... this is what the term pit viper references. Juveniles are similar to adults in coloration. This venomous snake can strike in a range up to 2/3 of its body length, so it is best just to leave it alone. Because it preys on rats, mice, rabbits, and other warm blooded prey, many of which are considered pests, the Diamondback Rattlesnake is extremely benefi cial to man.
4. Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake
Adults average 12-24 inches. The record is 31 inches. Adults are small, thick bodies, light to dark gray. A rufous stripe runs down the back and is interrupted by black or charcoal blotches that line up with matching spots on both sides. Juveniles are similar to adults, but the tip of the tail is yellow-green. When threatened, it shakes the rattles on the end of its tail, sounding more like an insect buzzing than a rattlesnake. The Pygmy is the most common of the venomous snakes found in TGO.

Some Advise From Your CSA Patrol Team
Summer Visits From The Grandchildren
How to make it a 100% success.
• Keep them SAFE.
• Explain the basic rules of TGO.
• Let them know these alligators are not like the artificial ones at Disney attractions (But, don’t scare them). Pick up a brochure at the CSA office or, better yet, take them to the Nature Center so they can learn about our wildlife and how we live together.
• Don’t use your Golf Cart as a babysitter! People under 16 are not allowed to drive a cart within TGO. Take them where they want to go, they did, however, come to see you.
• Show them the pool rules listed at both pools. These are for both their Safety and the Safety of others. Don’t forget their wristbands. Time in the pool with kids... sounds fun to us!!
• Be careful where and when they walk. (Ants, snakes, night time wildlife. We do live in a nature preserve - be careful)!
• Learn where to fish and where NOT to fish. Don’t fish on the golf course side of lakes. We don’t want them getting hit on the head with golf balls.
• Respect the Game room. Keep it clean and put everything back where you found it.
• Okay, vacation is over and it’s time for the grandchildren to go back home. But look, they left you a note...
“Not only did I learn a lot of things staying with you, I loved sharing my time with you. See you next summer!”
Love, Your Grandkids
