Veterans' Corner

The Happenings has a new contributor, her name is Deb Griffin, a retired Army Master Sergeant with 32 years of service to our country. She has also been a resident of TGO for the past 5 years. This new monthly feature will be devoted to the many members of our TGO Community who served our country in the armed forces. There are numerous veterans in our park and Deb's column will provide a welcomed op portunity to share some interesting news and amazing stories about our TGO service veterans. Read more on page 24.

The Pesky Tick

We all know The Tick can be a carrier of several diseases, including Lyme Disease, which includes a variety of severe symptoms. Well, now there is a new threat from our friend The Tick, known as the Alpha-gal syndrome. Ticks love to bite humans and when they do, they can easily pass on this disease, and you'll never know it - that is until you figure out you are now allergic to meat! Yes... Meat! Beef, pork and even lamb. If, after enjoying a bacon cheeseburger, you start to break out in a sweat, or hives or have trouble breathing, you just might have contracted Alpha-gal syndrome. Boom! You may now be an instant vegetarian! More on page 26....

Labor Day Weekend

One of the most celebrated three-day weekends of the year is Labor Day. It is also the unofficial end of summer. Here in TGO, we celebrate it with the very popular Labor Day Scramble Golf Tournament on Monday, September 4. Check the Pro Shop to see if there are any spaces open - for details, check out page 5. The Blue Heron Restaurant and Bar will also be open that day from 12 - 3:00 pm. They will have a special menu of 1/4 lb. hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages at a great price. Even if you didn't golf, the TGO community is welcome to stop by, have lunch and get out of the heat!

Manager’s Corner

September 1, 2023

Dear TGO Community,

I wish you and your family a wonderful Labor Day Weekend. As I write this letter, on Monday, August 28, 2023, CSA is preparing for tropical storm weather resulting from hurricane Idalia. TGO will most likely experience heavy rain and wind gusts this mid-week. According to the latest National Hurricane Center track, the storm will land as a category two, and will make landfall at the big bend of Florida in the northwest. Tropical storm and hurricane preparations seem to be the way we celebrate Labor Day here in Central Florida lately. The tropics remain very active with other potential formations into September. It’s too hot to cookout, and too wet and humid to enjoy much time outside. This is that time of year in Florida when we all must stay diligent, stay indoors, and keep an eye on the tropics.

There has been some exciting movement with our CSA staff team. Carmella Galley was recently promoted to Recreation Manager. She served as the lead of homeowner services here in the CSA office for two years. Musa Arturo Alici was selected to join our team as the new Blue Heron Food and Beverage Manager. He is a trained chef who brings over 40 years of experience in the restaurant business to TGO. He will begin training in September and join our team full-time in early October. Finally, courtesy patrol officer Steve Shaw retired from our team on Thursday, August 31. Steve served as our most tenured officer with nine years of service. Please help me congratulate Carmella, welcome Musa and thank Steve Shaw for his nearly one decade of service to TGO. Steve is the courtesy patrol officer who issued my ‘one-and-only’ TGO speeding ticket in 2017. Steve taught me an important lesson that day… to carefully watch my speed while driving on our TGO roads.

Despite the difficult weather, our low season improvement projects are moving forward on schedule. Last week we converted the old florescent lights in the fitness center to LED lights. This change immediately improved the quality of light and energy efficiency in this center. Just outside the fitness center, our buildings team replaced the columns and other areas of rotting wood in the breezeway and shuffleboard court area. This entire area will be painted during the week of Monday, September 11. Finally, this week our team began interior demolition of the bathhouse located at 360 Oak Cove. Over the next six weeks, we will be renovating the interior of this amenity. We plan to have it back open for our seasonal residents by mid-October.

I will take this opportunity to remind you again about a town hall meeting to review the details of our new Spectrum agreement. This will take place on Wednesday, September 20 at 2:00 pm in The Manor. Our new bulk agreement with Spectrum for Internet and TV begins on October 1. This upcoming town hall is an opportunity to get your questions answered about this new agreement before it begins. I hope to see you all there. If you are unable to attend, we will be publishing the minutes from this meeting for everyone in our community to review.

Sincerely,

3

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES!

Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Here is how it works...

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance.

We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process.

This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited.

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434 . These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

As light as a feather, yet no man can hold it for long. The answer is somewhere in this issue.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Richard F. Kelso passed away peacefully in the loving care of St. Francis Reflections Hospice in Titusville on July 29, 2023. He was 92 years of age.

Dick was born in Berkeley, California in 1930. He studied mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley while also enlisted in the US Army and subsequently in the USAF. He became a fighter pilot and eventually a transport pilot carrying military supplies in the Vietnam war. He retired after almost 30 years in the USAF Reserves.

He then worked as a computer programmer, analyst and sales manager for Honeywell EDP in Los Angeles while also studying acting.

Eventually, he found his true calling back in the skies as an American Airlines captain, ground school and simulator instructor for almost 30 years.

His passions in life were many. He loved traveling the world, restoring classic Porsches, racing his co-owned 911, flying his private antique 1943 Howard plane, scuba diving old shipwrecks, skiing, cooking, and entertaining his many dear friends. He had a never ending curiosity about learning new things in life.

Married three times and widowed, he found endearing love with his wife Beverly with whom he lived in TGO from 2004 until her death in 2014.

Dick is survived by his two children, several grandchildren and siblings. He truly loved it here in The Great Outdoors!

2023 Severe Weather by Ed Brown

Planet Earth and many of us who are on board are experiencing weather and geophysical events that seem hard to comprehend. They started a few weeks ago and are ongoing:

#1. The first was the wildfire on Maui that consumed much of the island and left behind burned bodies of residents, their pets and livestock, historic structures, homes, schools, churches, (all but one). Anything that could burn, did burn. More than 100 people burned beyond recognition. More than 1000 missing residents and tourists are still unaccounted for! Some survivors jumped into the ocean to avoid being roasted. The black smoke and radiant heat left them with a night of screams and terror and breathing disorders, but most “waders” survived the horror! How did this Wildland and Urban Fire Storm, whipped by strong winds, come to pass!? Why did so many families evacuating by car get cremated in their cars in the evacuation traffic back-ups? Poor planning and poor communication have been blamed. The toxic effects of smoke from a fire had not been considered. Residents of Maui were awaiting a Tsunami siren which would signal evacuation for a tsunami but not a wildfire! The speed of a wildfire had not been comprehended! The questions and answers will continue…

#2. A small Pacific hurricane, “Hilary,” climbed ashore at Baja California and headed north, like a motor home with a purpose. Its winds moderated somewhat but the rainfall increased as it headed into Northern California, Idaho, Washington and Canada. Hillary caused massive flooding in these areas as well as rock and mud slides. The boulders were often of a size that could clear traffic from the road. Meanwhile, trees and power poles were coming out of the super-saturated ground and transformers were being smashed!

#3. In the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storms were heading west. Texas and the Southwest U.S. were potential targets with heavy flooding and moderately high winds. In the Caribbean, Tropical Storms brought heavy flooding to the islands and an exit strategy that send the "weather trash” up the East Coast of the U.S. to New England and Bermuda; eventually to die in the North Atlantic! Central Florida is, thankfully, not in the picture “right now,” but “right now” can change suddenly. Ask the recent residents of Maui!

From a practical standpoint, you must be tuned into Survival: Your survival and survival of your family, your friends and your community. Better or crank-powered NOAA Weather radio, a battery-powered portable radio, the TV and Internet.

AVOIDANCE - Get out of harm’s way if you can (evacuation perhaps.) Just these two survivor strategies, applied early on, could be a lifesaver for you and TGO.

Hello Everyone - and welcome to the Veterans’ Corner

Veterans’ Corner is a new feature in the Happenings that is devoted to the many members of our community who served our country in the armed forces. The goal is to provide information for veterans and about veterans.

My name is Deb Griffi n and I have been a TGO resident for 5 years. I am a retired Army Master Sergeant with 32 years of service, including a middle East deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I wanted to start this column because it is an opportunity to share interesting news and information that is of value to veterans. Also, each month I hope to introduce you to a member of our community who served, and also provide contact information for those who’d like to volunteer or connect with other veterans and service organizations in our community.

I invite you to contact me at: griff82001@gmail.com with suggestions for stories you’d like to see and ideas for topics that would be of interest to our veterans. Also, please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in sharing their service story. Our TGO community would really enjoy getting to know you better!

Happy Birthday!!

First off this month - Happy Birthday to the U.S. Air Force! Previously a part of the Army, the Air Force became its own independent branch in September of 1947. With the rise of global terrorism, the Air Force now focuses on defense of air and cyberspace to protect America from cyber terrorists that jeopardize our safety and security.

Did You Know?

1) The Air Force tracks Santa Clause. In 1955 a newspaper gave out a phone number for kids to call Santa. The number was actually U.S. Air Defense Command, but the commander played along, and told the staff to tell the kids Santa’s current location. The tradition continues today.

2) Chuck Norris, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Morgan Freeman, and Jimmy Stewart all served in the Air Force. In fact, Stewart flew missions in WWII and Vietnam and rose to the rank of Brigadier General while still working in Hollywood.

3) Air Force One isn’t a plane. It’s actually the call sign for any Air Force airplane carrying the President of the United States.

The Last Laugh Officer:

“Soldier, do you have change for a dollar?”

Soldier: “Sure, buddy.”

Officer: “That’s no way to address an officer! Now, let’s try it again!”

Officer: “Soldier. Do you have change for a dollar?”

Soldier: “No, SIR!”

Hot Topic: The PACT Act

The PACT Act is a new law that expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. The PACT Act adds to the list of health conditions that the VA assumes (or “presumes”) are caused by exposure to these substances. This law helps provide generations of Veterans - and their survivors - with the care and benefits they’ve earned and deserve. A presumptive condition is an illness that is assumed or presumed to be caused by your service. Unlike other VA disabilities, you do not need to prove that your ailment was caused by your service once it is deemed a presumptive condition.

The PACT Act will bring these changes: Expands and extends eligibility for VA health care for Veterans with toxic exposures and Veterans of the Vietnam, Gulf War, and post9/11 eras. Adds 20+ more presumptive conditions for burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic exposures. Requires VA to provide a toxic exposure screening to every Veteran enrolled in VA health care.

Veterans and survivors can file claims for all conditions outlined in the PACT Act immediately. For Gulf War and post 9-11 Veterans, that includes: Brain cancer, Glioblastoma, Respiratory (breathing-related) cancer of any type, Gastrointestinal cancer of any type, Head cancer of any type, Lymphoma of any type, Lymphatic cancer of any type, Neck cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Reproductive cancer of any type, Kidney cancer, Melanoma, Asthma that was diagnosed after service, Chronic rhinitis, Chronic sinusitis, Constrictive bronchiolitis or obliterative bronchiolitis, Emphysema, Granulomatous disease, Interstitial lung disease (ILD), Pleuritis, Pulmonary fibrosis, Sarcoidosis, Chronic bronchitis, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

For Vietnam Veterans and other Veterans exposed to tactical herbicides, that includes two Agent Orange presumptive conditions: Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and High blood pressure (also called hypertension).

Veterans who are diagnosed with one of the new presumptive conditions and meet eligibility requirements should

submit a new claim for consideration using VA Form 21526EZ, Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits.

Veterans previously denied a toxic-exposure related claim are encouraged to file a supplemental claim using VA Form 20-0995, Decision Review Request: Supplemental Claim. Once a supplemental claim is received, VA will review the claim under the new law.

Veterans can learn about standard VA disability, supplemental, and secondary claims by visiting: VA.gov/disability/how-to-file-claim/when-to-file

IMPORTANT - Please Note: There are many people out there who will try to convince you that you need to pay someone or use a lawyer to apply for VA benefits –but that’s not true.

Applying for PACT Act benefits is free, it’s easy, and you can do it by working directly with the VA or a Veteran Service Organization. If you need assistance:

• Make an appointment with one of the VA counselors at your local facility.

• Call the Veterans Benefits Administration hotline at 1-800-827-1000 (press 8 for PACT Act).

• Work with a Veterans Service Officer at organizations such as the VFW or American Legion.

• Call 1-800-MY-VA-411 to learn more.

Be very careful to avoid scams and protect yourself when it comes to your VA benefits. Crooks will try to take advantage of you by scheming to get your personal information:

• The VA and other federal agencies will only contact you if you make a request. They will not just randomly call you to talk about your benefits.

• Unless you have initiated the call, don’t provide any personal information over the phone about your benefits or medical or financial details.

• Do not click on online ads or respond to suspicious social media including questionable e-mail or text messages. Call the VA directly with your questions.

To report fraudulent activity, contact the VA OIG at vaoighotline@va.gov or call 1-800-488-8244.

Ticks

In our continuing series of articles about bugs and insects that have a bad habit of annoying humans, we bring you the Tick. How can something with such a short name create so much havoc?

We're sure you know that ticks can be the cause of many diseases - Lyme Disease for one, which can be very debilitating - and not easy to get rid of. But there is a new threat that the Tick has been found to cause, known as the Alpha-gal syndrome. This is a unique type of food allergy that is triggered by the consumption of meat. Yes... meat!

Here's how it works... When a tick latches onto you and bites you or buries its head under your skin, it releases a sugar that triggers an immune response that can lead to a severe allergic reaction... to MEAT! Beef, pork or lamb. Yes, steaks, roasts and even Hamburgers! This is serious... if you get this disease, Bingo! You are an instant vegetarian.

(Can you imagine if there was a tick that carried a disease that made you allergic to wine! My gawd, this entire park would be in trouble!)

The Symptoms of Alpha-gal syndrome can vary in severity and may include: Hives or skin rash; Itching; Swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue; Gastrointestinal issues, such as abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea; Respiratory

This is an enlarged photo of the female Lone Star Tick that shows the mark on her back that contributes to her name.

symptoms, such as wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath; Anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing; A drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.

It’s important to note that the onset of symptoms is typically delayed, occurring several hours after eating mammalian meat. This delayed response can make it challenging for individuals to pinpoint the cause of their allergic reactions.

According to a government report, more than 100,000 people in the U.S. have become allergic to red meat since 2010 because of this weird syndrome triggered by tick bites . But health officials believe many more have this problem and don’t yet know it.

When a person with Alpha-gal syndrome ingests meat, the alpha-gal molecule in the meat triggers an immune response. This leads to the production of specific antibodies called IgE antibodies against Alpha-gal. The next time the person consumes mammalian meat, the IgE antibodies recognize the alpha-gal as an allergen, initiating an allergic reaction.

Alpha-gal syndrome is primarily associated with the Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum). This tick species is known to transmit the Alpha-gal carbohydrate molecule.

Riddle Answer: Your breath

26

There are two families of ticks found in the United States: Ixodidae (hard ticks) and Argasidae (soft ticks). Of the 700 species of hard ticks and 200 species of soft ticks found throughout the world, only a few are known to bite and transmit disease to humans.

Some of the common tick species found in Florida include:

• American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis)

• Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum)

• Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum)

• Brown Dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus)

• Black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) - commonly known as the Deer Tick, prevalent in northern Florida.

Lone star ticks are aggressive insects that hunt their prey. The greatest risk of being bitten by the Lone Star tick during the year is in the early spring through late fall. There are a few ways to spot them out in the wild: Adult females typically have a white dot or “lone star” on the back. They have a more rounded body shape than other tick species. Their coloring ranges from reddish-brown to tan. Usually are found in tall grass, in the shade or at the tips of low-lying branches and twigs.

As a result, individuals who are bitten by Lone Star Ticks can develop an immune response to Alpha-gal, leading to the development of the Alpha-gal allergy.

Okay, let's back up a bit... Ticks are parasites that feed on people or other mammals by biting them. People can be exposed to ticks year-round, but these pesky critters are most active during the summertime.

They are not insects, they’re actually classified as arachnids, like scorpions, spiders and mites. Adult ticks, like other arachnids, have four pairs of legs - that's eight total - no antennae and they don’t fly. Their body design, combined with their feeding needs for each part of their life cycle, determines how ticks get to their host to feed. A tick’s life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult.

There are hundreds of kinds of ticks but the deer tick and dog tick are the most common in the United States. Deer ticks are about the size of the head of a pin, while dog ticks can be up to one-half of an inch.

Contrary to popular belief, ticks don’t fall, jump or drop down from trees onto people. Instead, ticks live on the ground and migrate up a host before biting them. Many people described having ticks jumping on them from trees,

but ticks can’t jump. Instead, they patiently sit on low vegetation or crawl around the ground, sensing a host’s carbon dioxide and heat. Ticks are sneaky little buggers, they'll crawl over your shoe and up your leg and you'll be surprised where they can end up. Once they find the right spot, they'll start burying their head under your skin. Once they're in there, they're hard to get out.

The CDC recommends using a clean pair of fine-tipped tweezers to quickly and safely remove a tick from the skin by grasping it as close to the skin as possible and slowly pulling upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth parts to break off and remain under the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth parts with tweezers. If you cannot remove the mouth easily with tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal. It's probably too late by that time - you've already got the disease!

Also, if you find a tick on your body just hanging out, never crush it with your fingers because they could contain potentially infected blood. Simply brush it off with something other than your hand. Ticks also love to regurgitate - that means they can easily puke on your arm with a vomit full of bacteria and disease. If that happens, Boom! You can easily become a vegan - or worse yet, contract Lyme Disease.

Ticks can ride into your home on clothing and

Ticks can carry diseases that are harmful to both humans and animals, ESPECIALLY YOUR DOG, so it’s crucial to take precautions to prevent tick bites. When spending time outdoors in areas where ticks are present, consider wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellents containing DEET, checking for ticks after being outdoors, and removing ticks properly and promptly if found attached to the skin.

Lyme disease is the most common and well-known tickborne disease in the U.S. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and OSF HealthCare both say ticks transmit several other diseases.

Lyme disease is generally caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, and it is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Black-legged (Deer) ticks, according to the CDC. Typical symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans, which looks similar to a bullseye or target. The CDC

that are found should be removed. Tumble dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks after you come indoors. If the clothes are damp, additional time may be needed. If the clothes require washing first, hot water is recommended. Cold and medium-temperature water will not kill ticks.

Examine your gear and pets. Ticks can ride into your home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats and daypacks. Shower soon after being outdoors. Showering within two hours of coming indoors has been shown to reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease and may be effective in reducing the risk of other tick-borne diseases. Showering may help wash off unattached ticks, and it is a good opportunity to do a tick check.

Conduct a full body check upon return from potentially tick-infested areas, including your own backyard. Use a handheld or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body. Check these parts of your body and your dog’s body for ticks: Un-

says that most cases of Lyme disease can usually be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. But, if left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart and the nervous system. Lyme disease is not good.

In addition to Lyme disease, ticks can also transmit other tick-borne diseases to humans, such as anaplasmosis, borrelia miyamotoi, Bourbon virus, heartland virus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia

Before you go outside, know where to expect ticks. Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or even on animals. Spending time outside walking your dog, camping, gardening or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks. Many people get ticks in their own yards or neighborhood.

Try to avoid high grass and leaf litter, and make sure you walk in the center of trails. That includes your dog also.

After you come back inside check your clothing for ticks. Ticks are easily carried into the house on clothing. Any ticks

der the arms, in and around the ears, back of the legs, in and around the hair, between the legs and around the waist and the dog's underbelly.

These repellents are effective in deterring ticks from latching onto your skin.

DEET: It has been widely used for many years and is effective against ticks and various other insects like mosquitoes and flies. The concentration of DEET in the repellent determines its effectiveness and duration of protection.

Picaridin: This is a newer synthetic repellent that is also effective against ticks and provides a similar level of protection as DEET. It may be a good alternative for those who prefer to avoid DEET.

Permethrin: While not a direct skin repellent, permethrin is commonly used to treat clothing, shoes, and camping gear. When applied to these items, it can repel and kill ticks on contact, providing an additional layer of protection.

Coppertone Tan, Don't Burn The Fascinating Journey of the Invention of Sunscreen

The evolution of sunscreen, also known as suntan lotion or sunblock, is a remarkable tale of human ingenuity in response to the relentless power of the sun. Dating back thousands of years, the quest to protect our skin from the harmful effects of solar radiation has seen a series of innovative breakthroughs. Here is a brief history of sunscreen, its invention, and its ever-growing significance in modern society.

Ancient Origins of Sun Protection

Ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, were among the first to recognize the need for sun protection. Historical records reveal that they used natural substances like olive oil, plant extracts, and mud to shield their skin from the scorching rays of the sun. While these early efforts provided minimal protection, they laid the groundwork for more sophisticated advancements in sunblock.

The Invention of Modern Sunscreen

The modern concept of sunscreen, as we know it today, can be attributed to the brilliant work of a young chemist named Franz Greiter. In the early 1930s, Greiter, a Swiss student, experienced a severe sunburn while climbing Mount Piz Buin in the Alps. This painful encounter inspired him to dedicate his life to developing an effective sunblock that could prevent such skin damage.

In 1946, Franz Greiter successfully introduced the world's first commercial sunscreen, which he named "Gletscher Crème" or "Glacier Cream." This product had a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 2 and provided a significant improvement over previous attempts. Greiter's invention marked a turning point in sun protection,

and his discovery rapidly gained popularity among outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, and beach-goers.

The Rise of Coppertone

It was in 1944 that a pharmacist named Benjamin Green and his partner, Milton Blake, founded the Coppertone company in Miami, Florida. Milton Blake's wife, Henrietta, suggested the name "Coppertone" to evoke the idea of a tan while protecting the skin. The company initially produced a product called "Coppertone Dark Tanning Cream," which was designed to help people achieve a tan while providing some level of sun protection.

In 1953, Coppertone achieved a significant breakthrough with the introduction of their iconic product, "Coppertone Suntan Cream." This new formula featured an improved Sun Protection Factor (SPF), making it more effective at preventing sunburns and skin damage. The product's success propelled the Coppertone brand to immense popularity, partly due to its memorable advertising campaign featuring the image of a young girl with her swimsuit being pulled down by a mischievous dog, revealing her tan.

30
When Hurricane Irma hit Miami on September 10, 2017, the high winds sheared off the top of the Coppertone girl's head - A popular fixture at the Coppertone building in Miami.

Importance of Sunscreen Today

Sunscreen has become an indispensable element of daily life, especially in regions with high sun exposure. Its importance stems from the following reasons:

Skin Protection: Sunscreen shields the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, reducing the risk of sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Prevention: Regular use of sunscreen has been proven to lower the chances of developing skin cancers like melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma.

Anti-Aging Benefits: Sunscreen helps prevent sun-induced wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, keeping the skin youthful and vibrant.

Enhanced Outdoor Activities: Sunscreen enables individuals to enjoy outdoor activities, such as swimming, hiking, and sports, without worrying about sunburns or skin damage.

Boosts Overall Health: By protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, sunscreen contributes to the overall well-being of individuals, preventing sun-related health issues.

The invention and evolution of sunscreen has come a long way since ancient civilizations first sought rudimentary sun protection. From Franz Greiter's breakthrough in developing the first commercial sunscreen to Coppertone's iconic products and advertising campaigns, sunscreen has become a vital tool in protecting our skin from the sun's harmful rays. As awareness of sun protection continues to grow, sunscreen remains a crucial aspect of maintaining healthy and radiant skin in our modern world. Make sure to use it.

The Coppertone Girl was created in 1959 by commercial artist Joyce Ballantyne Brand. She was commissioned to design an advertisement for Coppertone's suntan lotion products. The original Coppertone girl model was Cheri Brand. Cheri was the daughter of the artist Joyce Ballantyne Brand. Cheri was three years old when she posed for the Coppertone girl image in 1959. It has become a part of American pop culture, symbolizing the carefree days of summer and the importance of sun protection. Even after several decades since its creation, the Coppertone girl image continues to be used in various forms of advertising and branding for Coppertone products, demonstrating its enduring impact and significance. Cheri has been known throughout the years as the girl with the most famous rear end.

If you tanned but didn’t burn during your last visit to the TGO pool or Playalinda Beach, you may need to thank Benjamin Green.

The Miami Beach pharmacist first used red veterinary petrolatum, or “red vet pet,” as a physical barrier from the sun to prevent ultraviolet rays from hitting his skin while serving as an airman during World War II, according to The New York Times. It was heavy and unpleasant, but effective at preventing sunburn.

After the war, Green developed a more pleasing product by adding cocoa butter and coconut oil to the “red vet pet.” This combination would later become Coppertone suntan lotion.

The original bottles and ads had a profile of a Native American chief with the slogan, “Don’t be a Paleface.” Even then, it was deemed to be offensive.

The company’s symbol, the Coppertone Girl, came along in the 1950s, with a cocker spaniel pup pulling at her swimsuit to reveal her bare bottom and a distinct tan line.

Visitors to the Miami area will remember the mechanized sign that stood near the Golden Glades Interchange at I-95. Another Coppertone sign, displayed at 73rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Miami, was granted landmark status.

As for Coppertone, it’s still in business - and currently owned by Beiersdorf AG. It has become the leading sun care brand in the United States, with annual global sales of $9 billion.

RV Maintenance Tips

It's that time of year when TGO residents are starting to return with their RVs and after a lot of miles on the road, now is the best time to make sure your RV is prepared to take on the next trip. The folks at Eagle's Pride provided us with a basic checklist of items you will want to review and make sure are performed before your next trip. Some are easy to do and others may need to be done by your RV service provider. No matter what the case - Don't Procrastinate!

Pre-Trip

• Keep up regular routine maintenance - Don't wait until it's time to leave to find out that there are issues that need to be addressed. It never hurts to do a "Dress Rehearsal" to make sure everything on your RV is working properly.

• Tires: Check the pressure. How worn is the tread and how old are the tires? Old tires with good tread can still cause problems due to their age.

• Batteries: How old are they? Are they topped off and charged? Will they take a charge?

• Fluids: Does your engine oil need replacing? Don't forget to check the transmission, hydraulic and wiper fluids.

• Wipers: Do they function properly... are the blades in good condition? Spray down your windshield and test them.

• Steps: Are they coming out and retracting as designed?

• Landing gear: Are your levelers functioning properly? Make sure they retract completely.

• Tow setup: Check your tow vehicle - is it in safe condition? Are the lights working? Are the batteries charged and water filled?

• Appliances: Make sure your fridge, oven/stove, microwave, washer/dryer, toilets, etc., are all working properly.

• Air Conditioner / Heater: Test them to make sure they function properly.

• Water tank: It's best to flush your tank before each trip and refill completely before leaving.

• Propane: Make sure it's full when you leave and works as designed.

• Slide outs: Are they functioning properly?

• Roof: Visually make sure there are no signs of damage or areas of concern.

Post-Trip

Keep up on your regular routine maintenance while you have time. Don't wait until it's time for your next trip. Be proactive!

Storing Your RV (without power)

• Disconnect the batteries.

• Clean out your fridge and turn it off. Prop open the door for ventilation.

• Open roof vents to the maximum to let the hot air out.

• Use a product like DampRid to help minimize the moisture in your RV.

• Dump your tanks completely and add approved treatments.

• Ensure slides are completely closed and sealed properly.

• Cover your tires - the sun can be a tire's worst enemy.

Funny Thing Is… A Pill A Day

Remember back in the day when the only pills you took were vitamins and usually just one each day? Well, when you become a senior your pills actually become your diet and the food you eat is just to supplement the pills to give your digestive system something to do. Let me elaborate. Most seniors start taking pills from the moment they wake up. Taking pills has actually become an art and a challenge. People used to show off their new dining room sets, but now they can't wait to show the neighbors their new automatic digital pill dispenser. I recently visited a friend who changed his very state-of-the-art spice rack into storage for all his pills. What used to be oregano is now oxycodone. What used to be basil is now B12. He's really proud of this! And, since we're talking about it, let me ask you something. What is the logic behind pharmaceutical companies anyway? If their pills work and cure you, they're out of business, so how much help do you think you're getting from that little tablet? Heck, it's a workout just sorting through all of them. By the time you get done categorizing and storing all your pills you need a nap. Uh, got a pill for that. When you wake up, you're hungry. Before you eat, don't forget to take your probiotic pill. When you get done, a little gas relief pill might be necessary. You'll need to get moving, so you'll need your energy pill. If you're going out, you'll need a pill if you have sun sensitivity. If you go exercise when you get back, you'll need a salt pill to restore what you lost at the gym. If your glucose count is high, you'll need a sugar pill. After a recent visit to my doctor, he told me to take the blue pill in the morning with water, the red pill at lunch with water and the yellow pill at dinner with water. I asked him what was wrong with me, and he said, "You're not drinking enough water." Voltaire once said (I'm paraphrasing here) that "doctors give pills they know little about, to cure diseases they know less about, for humans they know nothing about." And, don't forget, there are side effects with almost every pill. The only side effect I'm worrying about is bankruptcy! - Dr. Sammy -

Sudoku Puzzles

SUDOKU puzzles have one solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row, column, and 3x3 square must contain one of each digit.

HARD EXPERT

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.
