Come Hear The King’s Brass at our TGO Community Church

Join us on Sunday, January 8, at 6:00 pm for the King’s Brass concert, an innovative worship for young and old alike. By teaming together, these Christian professionals from around the United States perform their original arrangements as heard on their eight recordings. They play a wide variety of music from Gabrieli to hymn classics, from Handel to jazz spirituals, from Christmas carols to patriotic marches. The King’s Brass promises to lift your hearts and spirits in praise all while being entertained by the “best in sacred brass music.” See more on page 23.

Award winning entertainer and recording artist Eric Sage is the lead singer, and this show also includes the dueling electric guitars and amazing fiddle of Melissa Barrison plus vocalist Melody Ebner. How Strong is Your Christmas Trivia Game?

Between all the Christmas songs and movies out there, digging up a list of trivia questions wasn’t that tough - but you might be surprised how tough some of the answers are: What is Ralphie’s little brother’s name in the movie A Christmas Story ? What’s the name of the main villain in The Nightmare Before Christmas ? Which Christmas song contains the lyrics “Everyone dancing merrily in the new old-fashioned way?” Who’s the biggest grinch in TGO? See more on page 53.

December 23, 2022

100 D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780 • 321-268-9767

Dear TGO Community, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! The CSA and Recreation offices will be closed to observe the holidays on Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2. CSA will not collect garbage curbside on Christmas Day. Blue Heron will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day to allow our team some time with their families. The restaurant will feature revised hours and specials on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

This “Eve of Christmas Eve” issue of The Happenings provides our Courtesy Patrol team a great opportunity to thank you (well, almost all of you) for routinely obeying our traffic rules and following our speed limits. This Christmas Day will mark the fourth year that Courtesy Patrol will be ticketing a few drivers on our TGO roads who are carefully obeying the speed limit. The ticket you may receive is a gift voucher to the Blue Heron Restaurant. I hope a few of our safe drivers get recognized with some holiday cheer from our Courtesy Patrol team.

This week our CSA team worked on pothole repairs on our Plantation entrance road and at the intersection of Plantation and Sunset. This week we also followed up on safety items that were identified during our bi-yearly safety inspection of work areas conducted last week. Overall, our third party safety inspector was pleased with the conditions of our work areas. Our team has had a very safe year with no major accidents, and only three minor accidents.

Randy Hendershott joins our team as Blue Heron Food & Beverage Manager next week. After an extensive search, I’m confident we’ve hired the right person to lead our Blue Heron team and manage our restaurant in 2023. Randy joins our team with 42 years of experience in restaurant management. He is most excited about putting his skills to work in a large community such as ours. Randy will work hard to keep our restaurant successful, but our owners, residents, and guests will always be the most important ingredient in Blue Heron’s success. You ensure our success when you dine at Blue Heron regularly, and you share your positive experiences with others, or when things aren’t quite right, you provide kind and constructive feedback to the manager or staff so we can improve. Please offer Randy a sincere welcome to our community, and as always, thank you for your continued support of our restaurant.

The new year is a time to set goals. One goal I set every year is to listen closely to the Board, the residents, owners, and, employees, and work to implement their ideas to improve our community. Perhaps my most important goal in 2023 is to keep TGO a wonderful place to work by developing our CSA staff and recognizing their hard work. Just last week we recognized two CSA employees, Beth and Matt, as “Employees of the Quarter” for stepping up at the Blue Heron. You can read more about their hard work in this issue of The Happenings. They are just two examples of wonderful people who dedicate themselves to keeping TGO great. The CSA staff and I wish to thank you for the wonderful holiday cards, gifts, cookies and candies you shared with us… we have enjoyed your thoughtful wishes and treats, and now we will prepare to begin a new year’s diet! On behalf of our CSA Board and the entire CSA team, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

The CSA office has implemented a new number to send out important information to our community. Many of you may have seen this number come across as Potential Spam from Geneva, Florida. AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Steve Solomon - Broadway Comedian - March 2, 2023

Steve has taken the art of impersonation, mimicry and honed it into a science. He masterfully weaves dialects and crazy characters into his stories. These tales take on a life of their own as Steve recounts memorable moments from his past and makes hysterical observations of the things we all relate to happening around us today! A native of Brooklyn, Steve grew up in the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician. As the class clown and as a very authentic sounding Chinese restaurant delivery boy, Steve learned early how to use his gift for imitating accents to his advantage.

AMERICAN ALLIGATOR– PART 2

Linda Adams used to write educational articles for the Nature Center and we are fortunate to still have many of her articles. The article below is part of the American Alligator article she wrote during the 2000 -2001 season. Enjoy!

Mature alligators seek open water areas during the April - to - May courtship and breeding season. After mating, the females move into marsh areas to nest in June and early July, remaining there until the following spring. Males generally prefer open and deeper water year round.

Sexual maturity is dependent on the size of the alligator, and both sexes first reach sexual maturity when they are about 6 feet long. In the wild, this takes about 10 to 12 years; however, in captivity, under ideal conditions, alligators can reach sexual maturity much sooner.

After mating, females construct mounded nests of whatever vegetation is available. In late June and early July they lay 35 to 50 eggs, although nests have been found with only a single egg. After laying, the female covers the eggs with a layer of vegetation. Throughout the 65 - day incubation period, females remain nearby, and defend their nests against predators. In Florida, raccoons are the predominant egg predator.

As young alligators get ready to hatch in midAugust through mid - September, they begin to make high -pitched grunting sounds. The females respond to these calls by using their mouths and forefeet to remove the nesting material covering the young, thus liberating the 6 to 8 inch hatchlings from the nest.

Hatchlings remain in groups called "pods" at least through their first winter and may stay in the vicinity of the nest for two to three years. Female alligators may defend their young until the next summer.

Fun Facts About Honey Bees:

The queen may lay 1,500 or more eggs each day during her lifetime. This daily egg production may equal her own weight. She is constantly fed and groomed by attendant worker bees.

Honey bees fly at 15 miles per hour.

Honey bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.

Honeybees are the only insect that produce food used by humans. http://westmtnapiary.com/fun_facts.html

TGO Employees Of The Quarter

We have been very short staffed this fall and especially since Thanksgiving weekend when our restaurant manager resigned from our team. I’ve always found that when people step down, others are willing to step up for the right reasons, because they are asked to help, because they care about the customers, because they care about their team, and because they don’t want the restaurant to fail, they want to do the right thing. Two people at Blue Heron have really stepped up!

I’ll start with Beth Garrison. She has been our bartender for over three years now. She told me that she loves working here because of the people who have become like her extended family, and the people of TGO love her too. Recently after our manager left, I asked if she would step up as ‘acting manager,’ and she said YES because she wants our restaurant to succeed. This was a tough time to step up, with lots of holiday parties, but she reached out to each party, and made sure we were ready to serve and impress, and we did. Beth is patient, confident, and a good leader. She deserves to be thanked today for her willingness to lead us through stressful times and situations. We are really short staffed in the kitchen. Our back of house team is very new, but during this time all of them were willing to work extra hours to make these parties happen, and keep our Blue Heron operating and successful. Matt Neely was our most experienced cook, so I asked him if he would be willing to serve as Lead Cook, and he said yes, he would do it. So, along with being our primary cook for all of the parties and the regular business coming in the door, he took on the additional work of preparing the weekly schedule for our kitchen team, he inventoried our food, he ordered food from our vendors, he is doing quality control, and he is training some of the new staff. This work has been challenging and he was literally thrust into it, but Matt was up for the task and he has done a great job. He stepped up and led when we needed leadership, and I am grateful for all the extra time and effort he has put forward to keep our Blue Heron restaurant open and moving forward during this tough time. - Billy Specht -

Roadside Smoking - Fire Danger?

Did you know that just off the roadside there is a micro-environment that is just waiting for a source of ignition? The road shoulder, between the road surface and your lawn or the wildland is a special zone. Warmed, in all seasons, by the heat-absorbing pavement and watered often by rainstorm run-off, it is home to a large population of plants and animals. Your only clues to the uniqueness and diversity of this roadside oasis are the displays of wildflowers that you see along the road on your travels. Think of this zone as a source of fuel for a wildfire!

A carelessly discarded cigarette can provide the source of ignition that torches dried grasses, surrounding landscape and nearby homes. If you walk or bike our TGO roads, you surely have noticed the discarded cigarette butts. If you are a smoker, you may have inadvertently contributed to the potential fire load with a source of ignition and fuel. Ninety percent of all wildfires are started by humans. Discarded cigarettes are responsible for many of these. When you’re done with a smoke, make sure it is out, tear the paper and disperse the unburned tobacco (it won’t hurt the environment), roll the paper into a tiny ball between your fingers, discard it and pocket the filter for later trash disposal. If you are in a car, don’t flick the butt out the window. Put it in the ash tray. Don’t dump the contents of the ash tray in a parking lot. That is not be a classy thing to do.

Areas of particular concern for cigarette-sparked fires in TGO are parcels of land that have been set aside to remain in their natural condition. Among them are the following:

• All Nature Trails

• Brush-lined sections of Plantation Drive

• Brush-lined sections of Oak Cove Road

• Brush-lined sections of Narrow Road

• Windsong Way

• Beehive Drive

• S.R. 50 to Addison Canal

A recent NFPA report states that four percent of home fire fatalities were the result of fires started outside the home. These fires can spread into concealed spaces throughout the structure before smoke reaches the smoke alarms. Protect the fragile ecology of the road shoulder, as well as the greater integrity of our TGO community by disposing of smokes in a safe and Firewise way.

Know the Rules About Campfires within TGO

I. Definitions of Campfires

a. Open Fire: is a fire using wood, compressed logs, or other combustible material whether the fire is on the ground, in a “fire pit,” or in some other enclosure (e.g. a chimenea), and which may or may not be surrounded by a fire ring, and may or may not have a screened enclosure or cover.

b. Gas Fire: a fire which uses propane or similar fuel and which is fully contained in a fire pit or similar enclosure (either permanent or portable) and which does not emit sparks or embers.

II. Rule on Open Fires in TGO . Due to the high fire danger in and around TGO, open fires are not allowed anywhere within TGO at any time. Owners who permit such a fire on their parcel or on any of the common properties of TGO are subject to a fine of $500.

III. Rule on Gas Fires in TGO. Gas fires are not permitted at any time on an owner’s parcel. Gas fires are not permitted on any of the common properties of TGO.

IV. General Rule on Cooking Fires: Cooking fires (e.g. charcoal fires, smoker fires) which use charcoal briquettes, seasoned wood, or similar fuels, and are contained in a suitable controlled vessel (charcoal grill; smoker) are not considered “campfires” and are not intended to be addressed by the rule on campfires.

Not sure about the rule - Ask before you light it!

“Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS

“My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
