In fact, it’s a dang good thing they exist, especially here in TGO. For years they have been vilified as blood sucking creatures full of rabies, but truth be told, they are a very important part of our ecosystem. Not only are they great pollinators but their favorite food is insects - the mosquito kind of insects - which they can gobble up to 3,000 a night. The CSA office, Recreation Office and Mail Center will be closed this Monday, September 5, for the Labor Day holiday. Blue Heron Restaurant will host a Labor Day cookout on Monday from 12:00 to 4:00 pm in front of our Golf Shop, then Blue Heron will close for dinner service to allow the staff to rest and enjoy the holiday. This has been an exciting week for NASA and the Florida Space Coast! The Artemis Moon Rocket was scheduled to launch on Monday morning. The roads and highways around TGO were packed with thousands of vehicles and people hoping to see the launch from Titusville. Unfortunately, the launch was scrubbed shortly before launch time due to an engine hydrogen leak. As I write this article, NASA hasn’t solved the problem yet, but the next opportunity for launch is Friday, September 2, which is the publishing date for this issue of The Happenings. The Artemis Rocket is the largest, most powerful rocket to launch from Kennedy Space Center. This rocket is expected to put on a great show for North Brevard County with lots of rumbling and noise. The Ares spacecraft on top of the rocket will prove that humans are ready to return to the moon again, this time to establish a permanent base. Perhaps having the space program in your backyard is one reason why you love living in TGO. Being near the space center is one of the main reasons I love living on the Space Coast of Florida. This is an exciting, and especially wet, time of year for our Florida weather. The tropics are stirring and there are a few tropical weather systems in the Atlantic I am watching closely for formation. The afternoon rain showers are occurring almost daily now, and these rains are intense and causing our turf to saturate. It is difficult for our crews now to mow without damaging the turf, especially in the lower areas of yards throughout our community. If there is a chance we will cause damage to the turf, I have instructed our crew and supervisor not to mow. Thank you in advance for your patience. We are working steadily now to close out a few remaining improvement projects before our seasonal residents return this fall. The bathhouse at 199 Plantation was closed on Tuesday, August 30, to begin renovation, and I expect this project will be completed by mid to late October. The CSA office renovation is nearly complete, and I expect we will close it out by mid-September. The CSA office staff (including me) are very happy with their new office space. The office is very clean and organized now.

Dear TGO Community, Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Friday morning last week a small section of our 400 foot wooden cart bridge that passes over a small wetland and connects Hole #14 to #15 failed. When the failure occurred, one of our golf maintenance workers was driving a greens mower across the bridge. He was not injured, and the mower was fine too. We don’t usually drive our heavy mowers across the cart bridges, but that morning the second access between those two holes was wet. Within minutes, our CSA maintenance team was onsite and working to repair this section of bridge, and the golf course crew redirected cart traﬃc through the secondary access point to keep our course open during repairs. We discovered some wood rot in the bridge posts, and we have a proper long-term plan to maintain and improve this bridge, but I am happy to report that within five hours, the bridge was reinforced and repaired, and we safely reopened the bridge for our golf carts. I was so impressed with the level of communication and teamwork I saw that morning during this bridge repair. Six maintenance crewmembers worked together, urgently but safely, to get this bridge in operation again. This repair reminded me how skilled and dedicated our CSA employees are.

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on oﬃcial bulletin boards and shown on our TV Community Channel 732. The actual meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

The Third Quarter Maintenance Assessment for 2022 will be due October 1. Please drop off your payment of $900 at the CSA Oﬃce or mail it to: The Great Outdoors at 100-D Plantation Drive, Titusville, Florida 32780. You can also fill out a form to have your payment drawn directly from your bank account. The payment must be received by 5:00 pm on October 21, 2022 or there will be a $25 late fee.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Oﬃce at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that installation without

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Oﬃce for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

These applications are scheduled in 2022 as follows: October 4 & 5, and November 29 & 30 TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Oﬃce at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. They will make additional visits on the following 2022 dates: September 8 & 22, October 20, November 10, and December 15.

Our television channel for Community Services Association and other information about The Great Outdoors can be viewed using a digital TV tuned to Channel 732 on the Spectrum Cable TV system. The TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traﬃc signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

Opening for Safety and Security Committee

When you go to the TGO Mail Center you will notice a new “Exit Only” sign on the south door closest to Hobbyland. Kathy is changing the flow into the building by designating the main door as the main entrance, and the second door closest to Hobbyland as an exit only door. She and her team believe this will help provide better service at the mail counter when it is open.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

• Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

Walgreens has agreed to come to TGO on Friday, September 30 at 1:30 pm in the Manor to offer a free Flu Shot Clinic. Mark your calendars!

Mail Center Entrance...

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process eﬃcient, please follow these important rules:

There is an opening for owners who wish to serve on the Openings for Safety and Security Committee. An application needs to be completed to apply for committees. Ken Wiseman, a seasonal resident of TGO, told me he wanted to show me what it was like being retired. He sure fooled me. After listening to him tell me of his days, I quickly concluded that I had never worked so hard when I was on the job. Ken does many things. He is a podcaster, a photographer, a blogger, a world traveler, a drone pilot, and a connector. Now you might ask, “What in the world is a connector?” Read on and I will explain. I asked Ken where photography fits in with everything he does. Ken replied, “First, I want to say, photography is a companion to our passion for travel. When we retired, 18 years ago, we had photographed in all fifty states, in 8 countries (now 92), and on 47 cruises (now 97). But, photography has been my life. As you wrote of Bob Netherton, I had a darkroom as a kid, taught photography in an Illinois high school, was the Audio Visual director, and helped the other teachers capitalize on advanced technologies including slideshows as a teaching aid. So, photography and I are one.” I went on to ask about piloting a drone. OOPS, I made a mistake. Ken said he is not really a drone pilot, he is a photographer with long arms. I asked what that mean, and he replied: “After nine years flying drones I am pretty good at it, but I do not fly drones for the fun of flying, racing, or doing aerobatics. I fly them to put my camera where I would put it if I had very long armsway up in the sky, way out in front of a photo subject - places I can only reach with a drone.”

I asked what his podcast was about. “First it was on RV travel, now we have broadened it to all kinds of travel and photography. You can listen to 100’s of podcasts on www.rvnavigator.com. We have 10,000 listeners that connect with us.”

They told me their feedback connection is what keeps bloggers going. Talk about connection - In 2019, he was on the CBS Sunday Morning show. David Pogue, a full time corre spondent for CBS Sunday Morning, came to TGO to interview Ken about how the emerging podcasts were connecting people.

The time for my interview with Ken ran out and I re ally enjoyed our talk. We said our goodbyes and agreed we would stay connected. I want Snap-Shot to be a connector. I want it to en courage TGO photographers to connect with each other and talk about whatever aspect of photography turns them on. I think Ken, with his blog and podcasts, may be another connector. Speaking of blogs, I asked Ken to look at my blog, jimsdaily.com. “What is that?” Yikes, his face gave me the message. It was a terrible photo of the first spring flower I found on Drummond Island while biking. But, then his face went on to say that it’s okay as he start ed to tell me a story. “Last month I saw a lady turning her camera to a 45 degree angle to get the whole Eiffel Tower into a shot. I am sure the composition was terri ble - but it was her memory of the moment. Years from now it will be her connection to her trip.” “But Ken, I am sure she would like her shot of the Eiffel Tower to be more like the ones she sees in the trav el magazines. I know I would like my photo of the first flower of spring to be better. How can you help us?” His reply was, “I do not want to tell anyone how to take a better photo by using my definition of quality.” I wanted to see his face when I tried to zap him. Said I, “Are you sure you thought that answer through. You always told students what they should do when you were a teacher. I am thinking you were afraid I might ask you to teach at the Photo Club. That is why you an swered that way.” He laughed. “You’re right. My focus now is on traveling and photographing trips, not teaching. I am getting ready for the time when I can’t travel. I want to put my photos into a story of our life. I want to give my family that connection.”

The Hurricane At TGO - Part 2 by Ed Brown

On August 24, 1992, a hurricane by the name ANDREW ravaged South Florida. It was a Category 5 Super Storm with winds in excess of 175 miles per hour. ANDREW is considered to be the most devastating hurricane to hit Florida. It caused $50.5 billion dollars in damages (2022 pricing). It resulted in 62 deaths in the state, people mostly crushed or drowned. Andrew wiped out 102 miles of power lines, destroyed 33 cell phone towers and 907 small businesses. All this in a little more than two hours over land. It was indeed a devastating short storm! My family of six adults, plus two dogs and two cats, hunkered down and rode it out in the bathroom. Bats are Misunderstood

Bats do not attack people and they won’t get tangled in your hair. Bats are actually quite timid and basically ignore humans. Bats are not flying rodents. There are no Vampire bats in the United States. They are only found in southern Mexico, Central and South America. Vampire bats do not suck blood, they lap it up from a small scrape they make with their very sharp incisor teeth.

The most common misconception that people have is that all bats are rabid . This is not true. Studies have shown that less than one percent of bats contract rabies and when they do they usually die within three or four days. Although they do not become aggressive, they can end up on the ground or someplace they do not belong and if handled may bite in self defense and transmit the disease. Never handle a wild bat with your bare hands and make sure your pet’s vaccinations are current. Never handle or play with any bats. They are wild and meant to be left alone

Face it... Bats have a bad rep. Blood suckers, hair grabbers, disease carriers, mothers-in-law… bats have always had a bad reputation and are feared and persecuted across the world, when in fact, there are a number of reasons we need bats. They help people and our ecosystems in countless ways. Here are some facts that will help you appreciate their importance.

Although some mammals can glide, bats are the only mammal that can truly fly. Scientists have classified bats into a unique group or order called “Chiroptera,” which means “hand wing.” Bats literally fly with their hands! Their wings are much like our hands, but with longer fingers and a thin, but tough, membrane (skin) between the fingers. World-wide there are over 1,000 species of bats. From the fossil records we have learned that bats existed over 65 million years ago. Today, they inhabit all areas of the globe except Antarctica and the extreme desert regions, but most bat species live in the tropics. Bats eat a variety of things, including insects, fruit, nectar, fish and small vertebrates, but only three species feed on blood. Bats also come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. The largest bat in the world is the Malayan flying fox, a fruit-eater. It can weigh over 2½ pounds and have a wing span of over six feet! The smallest bat is the Bumblebee bat of Thailand, an insect-eater, which weighs less than a penny and has a wing span of only five inches. Bats are not blind, but in addition to sight, many species have highly developed ultrasonic bio-sonar capabilities, referred to as “echolocation,” which they use to navigate and catch insects in total darkness. Bats are Beneﬁ cial Seventy percent of the world’s bats eat insects. One bat can devour up to 3,000 insects in a night! Most insectivorous bats eat their body weight in insects each night. It has been estimated that the 22 million Mexican Free-tailed bats roosting in Bracken Cave, Texas, during the summer eat 250 tons of insects each night, a large portion of which are agricultural pests. It is little wonder that bats are considered the most important natural controller of night-flying insects. In the tropics, fruit and nectar feeding bats play a vital role in the survival and re-growth of the rainforests. Fruit bats spread seeds as they fly and digest their food. Nectar feeding bats pollinate many valuable plants. Banana, avocado, date, fig, mango and balsa wood are a few of the trees that depend upon bats. Agaves, saguaro and organ pipe cactus depend on bats for pollination.

IMPORTANT... if you are interested in installing a Bat House, within TGO they must be installed only on Common Properties, with written permission from the CSA Man ager, or the CSA Manager’s designee, as to the specific location of the proposed bat house.

Bats are in Need of Help

Maintain natural habitat for bats by allowing old dead trees to stand, not trimming dead palm fronds and leaving Spanish moss in trees. The Florida Bat Conservancy is an excellent source for all things Bats. Their website is www.floridabats.org

You can find several of these throughout TGO. Bat houses are a perfect way to get involved in conserva tion. A bat house in your backyard will provide bats with a much needed, safe place to live. They will also do you the return favor of eating insects around the area. Re member, bats can eat up to 3,000 insects per night... a far better alternative to sprays designed to kill mosqui tos which unfortunately kill other important creatures like dragonflys.

Bat Houses

You can help bats by learning more about them and sharing bat information with others. Fear and misun derstanding are one of the worst enemies of bats. You can help by supporting conservation groups that pro tect wildlife habitat and preserve natural lands.

Brazilian Free Tails and Evening Bats are the most common found in TGO. Some solitary bats are the Northern Yellow and Seminole bats.

49 Bats are Theatened Bats are disappearing at alarming rates. Disturbance or destruction of roost sites due to development and vandalism is the greatest threat to the world’s bats. Most bats living in Florida prefer to roost in mature or dead trees or in caves. However, many bats are squeezed out of urban areas due to loss of habitat or take up residence in buildings and become the targets for abuse. Public education and preservation of roost sites are the keys to maintaining Florida’s native bat populations.
