Basic Pickleball Rules
Pickleball can be played as a singles or doubles game, the court and rules are the same for both. Scoring The game is normally played to 11 points and must be won by 2. You can only score a point while serving. The score should be said aloud before each serve with the serving team’s score stated fi rst. In doubles both players on a team serve so the last number stated should be to identify which server is serving, e.g., 5 - 3 - 1 would mean the serving team is winning 5 to 3 and the server is the 1st server on the team, for the 2nd server it would be 5 - 3 - 2. The Serve The serve must be hit with an underhand swinging motion and the ball contacted below the waist. The server must be behind the baseline and serve into the opposite service box like in tennis. You only get one serve. If the ball is hit out of the court, into the net or into the no-volley zone (kitchen) it is a side out. The center line, side lines and baselines are considered in on a serve but if the ball lands on the no-volley line it is a side out. There are no longer any lets in pickleball. If the ball hits the net and goes in, it must be played by the receiving team. A new provisional rule allows for a “drop serve.” You can now drop the ball and hit it after the bounce while serving. You can drop the ball from any height but you can’t throw it with any force to bounce it. In doubles each player serves until a point is lost then the other team gets the serve. At the start of the game the team that serves fi rst only gets 1 serve so the score starts at 0 - 0 - 2. The 2 means it is already the 2nd server. The 1st serve on each side is always from the right service box serving into the right service box on the other side. Double Bounce Rule When the ball is served the player on the receiving side must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. When the ball is returned to the serving side the ball must again bounce once before being hit. After the ball has bounced once on each side the ball can be hit without bouncing as long as you aren’t in the no-volley zone within 7 feet of the net. No Volley Zone The No-Volley Zone is the are within 7 feet of the net on each side. A player can not hit a ball if he is inside the No-Volley Zone unless the ball bounces fi rst. If a ball hits a player in the No-Volley zone before bouncing, the point is lost. Once a ball bounces a player can hit the ball while inside the zone. If a player hits a ball while outside the No-Volley Zone and the momentum takes him/her into the zone, the point is lost. If your foot touches any part of the line you are considered inside the zone. You can reach over the line and hit a ball as long as your foot is behind the line. If a serve hits the No-Volley line the serving team loses the point.

Tidbit About Pickleball
If you get no points in a game and therefore lose, it is referred to as being pickled.
Pickleball Terms & Defi nitions
Are you learning pickleball for the fi rst time or are you brushing up on the game? Here’s a list of pickleball terms. Carry - Hitting the ball in such a way that it does not bounce away from the pickleball paddle but tends to be carried along on the face of the paddle during its forward motion. Cross-court - The court diagonally opposite your court. Dead Ball - Describes the pickleball ball after a fault is declared. Dink Shot - A soft shot intended to arc over the pickleball net and land within the non-volley zone. Double Bounce - A ball that bounces more than once, on one side, before it is returned. Double Hit - One side hitting the pickleball ball twice before it is returned over net. Double hits may occur by one player or could involve both players on a team. Drop Shot - A groundstroke shot that falls short of the opponent’s position. Drop Shot Volley - A volley shot that is designed to “kill” the speed of the ball and return it short, near the net, to an opponent positioned at or near the baseline. Fault - Any action that stops play because of a rule violation. First Serve - To begin a new game, only one partner from the fi rst serving side is allowed to serve. After the fi rst fault, the serve switches to the opposing side. Groundstroke - Hitting the ball after one bounce. Half Volley - A groundstroke shot where the paddle contacts the ball immediately after it bounces from the court and before the ball rises to its potential height. Hinder - Any element or occurrence that aff ects play. Let - A serve that hits the net cord and lands in the service court. Let may also refer to a rally that must be replayed for any reason. Second Serve - A term used to describe the condition when a serving team begins the game or subsequently loses the fi rst of its two allocated serves. Overhead Slam / Smash - A hard, overhand shot usually resulting from an opponent’s lob, high return, or high bounce. Passing Shot - A volley or groundstroke shot that is aimed at a distance from the player and is designed to prevent return of the ball. Rally - Continuous play after the serve and before a fault. Replays - Any rallies that are replayed for any reason without the awarding of a point or a side out. Service Court - The area on either side of the centerline, bounded by the non-volley line, the baseline, and the sideline. All lines are included in the service court except the non-volley line. Side Out - Declared after one side loses its service and other side is awarded service. Volley - Hitting the ball in the air, during a rally, before the ball has a chance to bounce onto the court.
