策展人的話
高雄 春天藝術節 的第一個五年
2014，高雄春天藝術節 (KSAF) 第一個五年。以城市之名、 秉持著自創、自製、自辦、自銷的世界表演藝術盛會，在 近 30 萬名觀眾支持下，逐步成為臺灣『自』成一格的國際 藝術節。不只演出，KSAF 更推動藝術教育推廣活動、扶植 在地表演團隊與人才來深化累積城市的文化內涵，打造高 雄成為文創大城。 樂有宮商角徵羽五音；戲有生旦淨末丑五行當，自藝之始， 在舞台上不停傳頌搬演。五，是藝術作品組成元素、是值得 慶祝的紀念周期、也是穩定發展的奠基。2014，KSAF 將
以精彩節目、更積極的藝術推廣來開啟更多個五年，讓伸展 至新思想的心靈，不再回歸到原先的視界。

The First Five Year Period of the KSAF
In 2014 the KSAF will be held for the fifth year. Named after the host city, this self-created, self-produced, self-organized and self-marketed grand event for performing arts from around the world, with the support of almost 300,000 people, has gradually become an international arts festival uniquely in Taiwan. KSAF does not only present performances, it also features arts promotion and education activities, and nurtures local performing troupes and talents to accumulate the city’s cultural capacity, with the aim of making Kaohsiung a major culture-based creativity center. In ancient Chinese music, there’s a scale of five notes of do, re, mi, sol, la (gong, shang, je, zhi, yu); as for theatre, there are characters from Peking Opera (sheng, dan, jing, mo, chou). Performing arts continuously flow and are being performed on stage. The element of “five” forms the works of art, is the cycle that worth celebrating and commemorating and also the solid foundation for development. In 2014 the KSAF, with more splendid performances and more active arts promotion, will take the spirit and set the stage for many more KSAF.

超譯經典 ∞ 夢想無界
2014KSAF 邁入第五年，大膽嘗試以「超譯經典 ∞ 夢想無界」 為命題，邀請莎劇權威英國皇家莎士比亞劇團與蘇格蘭國家 劇院以「馬克白後傳」向莎士比亞致敬、更邀請到美國現代 舞大師比爾提瓊斯親自登台演出。參演國際團隊、國內團隊 透過 33 檔精彩節目展現其對於經典文本、哲學思想的獨特詮 釋，及用生命夢想交相激盪的無限創意。 再一次，高雄春天藝術節將藉表演藝術獨特形式，傳遞著藝 術家從靈魂底層蔓長出來的情緒與價值，引發每位觀眾靈魂 深處悸動。更以一種新高度、新向度望向社會與生活。普魯 斯特曾說過 :「真正的發現之旅，不在於找尋新天地，而在於 擁有新的眼光。」KSAF 希望讓伸展至新思想的心靈，不再回 歸到原先的視界。努力讓流動在人與城市之間的思維、觀點、 價值、夢想，帶領我們掙脫常軌，嘗試更大的冒險與革命。

Beyond Reinterpreting the ClassicsBorderless Dreams
The 2014 KSAF, the fifth ever KSAF, with the bold theme of “Beyond Reinterpreting the Classics-Borderless Dreams” invites world-renowned authorities on Shakespeare- the British Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland- to pay their respects to Shakespeare with the joint production of ‘Dunsinane’ a reinterpretation of ‘Macbeth’. Renowned modern dance master Bill T. Jones will also appear on a different stage. International and Taiwanese groups will display their unique interpretations of classic texts and philosophical thoughts through 33 performances and generate limitless creativities from the meeting of life and dreams. Once again, the KSAF will use the unique form of performing arts to convey the emotions and values of the artists from deep in their souls, exciting every member of the audience. Moreover, society and life will be viewed from different angles. Marcel Proust said: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” The KSAF aims to take the spirit to a higher plane, making every effort to let the thoughts, views, values and dreams that flow between people and the city guide us to leave behind normal practices and be more adventurous and revolutionary.

提姆波頓，百人交響樂團的演繹經典曲目，向時代中的英雄致敬，
傳承勇敢正義的革命精神，讓愛與和平、勇氣與夢想隨世代延續。 There’s a hero in every story; every age has its heroes. The heroes of the 2014 KSAF Grassland Concert are its stars, the theme of the music, an inscription of the times, the dreams of children. They are every one of us. From Harry Potter to Tim Burton, the hundred-strong KSO’s reinterpretation of classic pieces of music is a tribute to the heroes of our age. Passing on the revolutionary spirit of courage and righteousness, they allow love and peace, courage and dreams to continue through this century.

The opening night of the 2104 KSAF will surprise and amaze you! The Italian trumpeter Andrea Giuffredi will perform many classic pieces; conductor Yang, Chih-Chin will lead the KSO in a reinterpretation of Verdi’s Nabucco, and Summon The Heroes. What’s more, four choirs, the Red Clogs Chorus, Kaohsiung Medical University Chorus, Sing Yun Chorale, and Taiwan Melody Chorus have been gathered to perform, creating a chorus of over 100 members who will perform “If We Open Our Minds’ Eye” among other pieces. The whole group will assemble for a performance of “Taiwan the Green,” expressing their passion for their homeland!

450 年前，上天給了世界莎士比亞，自此，人們不停地搬演與詮釋他一 部部經典。 今年 KSAF 特別邀請舉世聞名的莎劇權威─英國皇家莎士比亞劇團與蘇 格蘭國家劇院以大膽新編「馬克白後傳」向莎翁致敬。也邀請英國皇家 蘇格蘭藝術學院的青年藝術家，創意翻玩莎翁經典喜劇「威尼斯商人」。 德國弗洛茲劇團「天堂大酒店」更是征服世界各大藝術節的面具劇經典 之作。臺灣節目部分則呼應社會脈動，將華人同志文學經典之作「孽子」 搬上舞台，由曹瑞原導演跨界詮釋。也以「天天想你」音樂劇，向張雨 生留給台灣流行音樂的正面能量致敬。 加拿大瞬間劇團「愛麗絲夢遊仙境」、法國歐卜劇團「蘿絲小玫瑰」、 豆子劇團「看不見的旅程」更是闔家共賞的首選節目，透過夢想無限的 故事、豐富精采的表演，親近藝術更共度美好的溫馨時光。
450 years ago, Heaven gave the world Shakespeare. Since then, people have incessantly performed and reinterpreted every one of his classic works. This year, the KSAF has invited world-renowned authorities on Shakespeare- the British Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland will pay their respects to Shakespeare by means of a daring reinterpretation of Dunsinane. Young performers from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland have also been invited to give a creative reimagining of The Merchant of Venice. Hotel Paradiso, by the German troupe Familie Flöz, is a classic work which has been performed at great art festivals worldwide. Meanwhile, some of the Taiwanese performances will move the classic Chinese gay literary work “Crystal Boys” onstage, providing a cross-discipline reinterpretation by director Rui Cao. Tribute will also be paid to the positive energy brought to Taiwanese popular music by Yu-Sheng Zhang through the musical More Than Words. Plays such as Alice in Wonderland, performed by the Canadian troupe Théâtre Tout à Trac, Rosie Rose by the French troupe La Cie Opopop, and Bean Theater’s Invisible Journey are also the first choice for the whole family. Boundless, dreamlike stories and rich, splendid performances will be a warm, beautiful experience, sure to bring you closer to art.

In a fantastic little apartment, an unimaginable dream plays out: flowers bloom from the corners, and walls are dreaning of revolution, Mr Mouse sways on an old jazz tune, and the garden gnomes are listening to private messages from BeBeCe… The French 2-person theatrical group La Cie Opopop presents a new theatric style using special circus techniques and props, creating atmosphere through the use of light and projection. The performance is inspired by the music of the 50s jazz singer Rose Murphy. Sweet music, a classical yet cartoonish stage, mischievous, teasing tricks and witty body language- La Cie Opopop does not rely on language to communicate with audience. Let’s take our children by the hand and pay a visit to Rosie’s flat as guests- a fantastic party is about to begin!

《威尼斯商人》是莎士比亞著名「最悲的喜劇」，亦 是其複雜且具高度爭議的作品，將觸角探向正義、貪 婪與物化等亙古不變的議題，導演阿里德蘇薩 (Ali de Souza ) 更坦率開放地探索種族歧視與同志感情，為莎 劇抹上現代前衛的妝容。
皇家蘇格蘭藝術學院成立於 1845 年，為蘇格蘭最著名 的表演藝術學院之一，也是全英培養專業戲劇演員的搖 籃。本次以極簡手法，重新演繹《威尼斯商人》此經 典巨作，顛覆古老威尼斯城為當今爾虞我詐的英國金融 商界，新銳演員著現代服裝、談吐莎翁文本台詞，在最 簡約少量的舞台設計下，迸發文豪名著再詮釋的戲劇能 量。2014 春天藝術節巧思安排《威尼斯商人》於「高 雄正港小劇場」嗆辣登場，兩者同樣以最不設限的態度 與飽滿的飆演戲胞為核心，期待撞出驚艷火花。

The Merchant of Venice is renowned as Shakespeare’s “most tragic comedy,” and also a work possessed of complex, high-level conflict, exploring such timeless issues as justice, greed, and materialism. The director, Ali de Souze, dares to openly explore interracial prejudice and homosexual relationships, adding a modern face to Shakespearean drama. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, one of Scotland’s most renowned performing arts schools, and also a cradle of professional acting talents, was established in 1845. The classic work “The Merchant of Venice” will be reinterpreted through extremely simple appcoaches, revisiting classical Venice from the angle of modern world of high finance. Cutting edge actors in modern clothing utter original Shakespearean dialogue beneath minimalist stage design, bursting with rich, dramatic energy. The Merchant of Venice’s red-hot debut has been arranged to take place in the Kaohsiung Experimental Theater; both the venue and the production center on an unrestricted energy and abundant performing ability. “Hotel Paradiso” is a hilarious comedy with mime form. The story takes place in an old hotel run by mismatched siblings, a series of accidents…. – the slightest misstep leads to a dark, mystery affair! It can be called a funny version of “horrible night at the hotel”. It has toured 21 countries around the world, and been performed in 19 art festivals, including festival d’Avignon. Sincere emotions are communicated between actors and audiences through rich motions and wordless in “Hotel Paradiso”. The exaggerating masks have a unique charm, adding yet more absurdity and poetry to the black comedy by the cartoonish faces. Familie Flöz is a masks theatre which has gathered actors, musicians, dancers, directors, masks, stage lighting, costume design, and dramatic consultants. The unique performance has already made the troupe play a leading role in the field of the masks and puppets theatre. Following performances in France, Holland, Denmark, and Slovakia, which met with awards and much acclaim, their work has become famous for their humor and poetic power.

To save the Rabbit, who has lost his gloves, from having his head chopped off by the ill-tempered Queen of Hearts, the brave and mischievous Alice begins an astonishing journey, over the course of which she meets the timorous Humpty Dumpty, the hookah-smoker catrtpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and plays a game of cards with the grudge-bearing Queen of Hearts! Théâtre Tout à Trac has been performing Alice in Wonderland for a long time, not only expanding their tours in North American, but has also been invited to non-Anglophone countries such as Belgium and Kingdom of Bahrain to give performances, kicking up a storm with audiences young and old. The British children’s classic is accompanied by fine stage scenery and props, which bring everyone a rich audio-visual experience through beautiful costume design and fine sets, transforming the play into a childrens’ adventure and so ensuring that a good time is had by all. English surtitles will be provided at one performance of this performance; we hope that a full-English theatre environment will allow children to experience the joy and feeling of achievement learning English brings.

Xian-Yong Bai’s classic of gay literature, presented on stage. The impetuous passion of homosexual lovers, recrimination and redemption between father and son; a classic novel which explores humanity, a fine, beautiful, moving play! The stage version of Crystal Boy is performed by the idols, Matt Wu and Tzu-yi Mo, in addition to an outstanding cross-discipline group, including Mei-Yun Tang, Qiang Ding, Shu-Qin Ke, Kuang-Yao Fan, YiLong Lu, and Billy Zhang, and 18 male dancers. The interplay between virtual and real succinctly displays the rootlessness and despair of the Crystal Boys, producing the on-stage style of Crystal Boys by means of a dialogue between cross-discipline aesthetic perspective and dramatic creation. The play is mapped out along the longitude of the passionate love between homosexuals, while extends along the latitude of the father-son relationship, the most complicated of relationships in Chinese society. The performance reveals the recrimination and redemption of the original work, along with its mythology, love, desire, and life-death bias.

Adventure in Three Kingdoms is composed of selections from the classic novel “The Romance of Three Kingdoms ”over the period in which Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu fight the Yellow Turbans. What's more, a modern character - Xiao Mao joins the story toin crease more interesting plots. The way of performing , stage alterations, lighting design, and other characteristics of Romance of the Three Kingdoms differ notably in accordance with the different times featured in the plot. The added quirk of time travel and differences between ancient and modern times will heighten the novelty of the production.

Jones) 的自傳性 作品，大師將親自登台帶領我們看見他生命中的每一個稍縱即逝的靈光 瞬間。成立十五周年的雲門 2 以春鬥 2014 來完成生命的成年禮。全本 芭蕾舞劇《柯碧莉亞 Coppelia》找尋著愛情的真實與殘酷。 The aboriginal dancers of "Pu'ing: Tracing The Atayal Route" return to their origins. This program of 2014 KSAF is a journey of one migration after another. Story/Time, the autobiographical work of Bill T. Jones is an exclusive present only in KSAF. Bill T. Jones himself will take the dancers on to the stage and lead us travelling through every part of his memory. In 2014, Cloud Gate 2 came to the KSAF to complete a coming-of-age ceremony. They will seek the reality and ruthlessness of love in the ballet Coppelia.

The story tells the thoughts of an Atayal youth, Watan, who faced with the impact of other cultures. He returns to his home village to embark on a journey in search of his own culture and identity. This journey contains the ancient and modern, truth and falsehood, unfolds along bubbling streams hidden in the deep forest in a quest for his own culture. “Pu’ing” is an important word in Atayal culture, which means “origins, clan.” One of the basic move in the performance is “walking,” joining the name of the performance with the Klesan of the Atayal.

Kaohsiung City Ballet has been honored by the Ministry of Culture for its outstanding performances for 14 consecutive years. In 2014, Kaohsiung City Ballet releases a fantastic and joyful ballet production《Coppélia》, which is composed by Léo Delibes, and choreographed by Saint Leon. It tells the story of Swanilda, who becomes jealous of Coppelia, the daughter of the puppet-maker Dr. Coppelius, after her lover, Fanze falls in love with Coppelia. But it turns out that Coppelia is merely a wooden puppet made by the puppet-maker. And it results in a lively and fantastic story that is sure to be the favor of audience with any age.
