建國百年，國樂不曾缺席。從喧鬧北管到典雅南管，從細膩絲 竹到交響編制，代表傳統音樂演奏藝術的臺灣國家國樂團(N.C.O.) 將持續揮動音樂的魔法棒，與樂迷一起感受動人的國樂篇章。在新 年度的節目安排裡，臺灣國家國樂團以精純的音符節奏，超然的音 樂想像，讓樂迷再一次被感動。
For the R.O.C. Centennial, the traditional Chinese music is never absent. From the country Beiguan to the elegant Nanguan, from the tender string and wind instruments music to the symphony organization, the National Chinese Orchestra, Taiwan (NCO) which represents the traditional performing arts will continue waving its music wand, to share the touching Chinese music with fans. In the program of the new year, NCO is going to impress the fans by pure and accurate note and rhythm and extraordinary music imagination.
今年臺灣國家國樂團以「純．然．感．動」作為我們的樂季精 神，投射在五大系列當中。「純」代表著純粹、代表著原創，「臺 灣真美」系列由本團指揮蘇文慶老師與鋼琴家葉綠娜、排笛王子張 中立與胡琴演奏家楊珮怡強大卡司攜手揭開序幕，將展現音樂中最 純真、最美的感動。另一場與台灣原聲童聲合唱團的合作，則帶來 國樂與原住民童聲最美的交融；我們也將演奏客家樂音，展現客家 族群隨和、勤儉與知天命的生命情懷，呈現最純淨的臺灣之音。
This year NCO adopts “Purely Touched” as their music season spirit, which will be reflected and carried out in the five grand series. “Chun Ran Gang Dong” is its Chinese title. Each character has a significant meaning in this special season. “Chun”, means purity, also means originality. The series of “Taiwan, how beautiful!” includes not only the NCO’s classic symphonies from the past, but also a collaboration with the Taiwan Aboriginal Children Chorus, in which they will present a most beautiful combination of traditional Chinese music and the children’s voice of aboriginal kids. We will also perform Hakka music, to demonstrate the Hakka group’s characteristics and life spirits – amiable, hardworking, respect to the life, and bring out the purest voice of Taiwan.
「然」代表超然的境界，樂季「超．樂」系列當中，中西音樂 名家相繼接棒，樂團指揮蘇文慶-邀請到國寶級打溜子演奏家黃傳 舜及旅美琵琶演奏家楊惟與樂團合奏，集民間傳統、超技、新穎風 格樂曲於一同。指揮家郭聯昌也將大展身手與小提琴家蘇顯達為樂 迷帶來北國色彩濃厚的小提琴協奏曲。 「感」代表著觸動，靈魂與樂音的火花撞擊，透過大師的詮 釋，帶來靈性的觸發。延續往年「風格大師」系列，今年邀約到上 海歌劇院院長張國勇與關迺忠擔綱指揮，張國勇將帶領著二胡演奏 家劉光宇與臺灣笛樂名家陳中申、劉貞伶攜手合作，詮釋多首動人 的協奏樂章。享譽國際的指揮家關迺忠將再返臺灣國家國樂團，演 出作曲家趙季平的《古槐尋根》。 承載著社會各界對於臺灣國家國樂團的期許，我們以「動」 作為我們對自我的要求，新樂季當中，我們會更積極主動深入各縣 市，推出「全國音樂巡禮」與各地的國樂團一起合奏，傳遞以樂會 友的喜悅。 臺灣國家國樂團也將與傳藝家族合作，持續內化各樂種與劇種 的未來性與可能性，今年我們將與臺灣豫劇團合作，舉辦主題跨界 音樂會演出。此外也將與睽違十年的黃香蓮歌仔戲團合作，再現當 代歌仔戲精緻劇場。我們深信，最傳統的就是最新的音樂時尚，最 經典的也是最動人的時代之音。 沒有誇張的跨界，沒有牽強的融合，臺灣國家國樂團迎向傳統 與經典的頂峰，要以豐富的臺灣文化、歷史與生活素材為基底，確 確實實，揚起每一顆動人的百年之音。
“Ran” refers to a status of surpass. In the series of “Super．Music” in this season, Eastern and Western music maestros take turns one after another. Su Wen-Ching, conductor of the orchestra, invites Pipa musician Yang Wei to perform together with the orchestra, in order to treat the audience to the fascinating scenery of North Shaanxi. Conductor Kuo Lian-Chang also joins our project and will perform the violin concerto no. 1 by Guan Nai-Zhong. “Gan” means to touch. The sparks of soul and music meet, and through the interpretation of the maestros, it touches off the spirituality. Following the “Style Maestro” series from the past, this year we invite Zhang Guo-Yong, the president of the Shanghai Opera House and Guan Nai-Zhong as guest conductors. Zhang Guo-Yong will lead the erhu musician Liu Guang-Yu, a talented student of Min Hui-Fen, and the great Taiwanese dizi musicians Chen Chung-Sheng and Liu Chen-Ling.The world famous conductor Guan Nai-Zhong will return to NCO and present his own pieces. Having the society’s expectations for the public orchestra on our shoulder, we demand ourselves with “Dong,” which refers to move. In the new season, we will more tour to other cities more actively and frequently. Therefore we have one project named “Music Tour to 25 Cities” to perform together with the local traditional Chinese orchestra and to convey the joy of meeting friends through music. NCO will cooperate with the family of traditional arts, continue internalize future possibilities of all music and drama genres. This year we will collaborate with the Taiwan BangZi Opera Company and hold a trans-border theme concert. In cooperation with the NCO, the Huang Xian-Lian Taiwanese Opera Company is pleased to stage the opera show featuring Chinese orchestra music. We are convinced that, the most traditional is also the most modern, the most classic is also the most touching voice of era. No exaggerating trans-border or forced combination, the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan stands on the shoulders of tradition and class. Based on the Taiwanese culture, history and livelihood from the past few centuries, it aims to solidly play every appealing note of the century.

The traditional Chinese music art, originated from Taiwan homeland, from Beiguan, Nanguan, string and wind instruments to the symphony organization style of traditional Chinese music, carries the local Taiwanese emotions and witnesses the changes, traditions and grow of our beloved land, Taiwan. As this year marks the R. O. C. centennial, the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan , as the member of performing groups of the Preparatory office of the National Headquarters of Taiwan Traditional Arts, will also continue its contribution in the field of the local music development during this historical moment. In the process of embodying art, different countries name the “traditional music” in its own way. Taiwan names it as “National” music, Mainland China calls it as “Folk” music, and Hong Kong and Singapore, both Chinese societies as well, refer it as “Zhong” music (Zhong means central, also refers to Chinese) and “Hua” music (Hua means flourish, also refers to Chinese) respectively. Cross strait, four places, they name the music differently, and it seems it has become a secret code for the musicians in this field. Together they all make efforts to promote all kinds of music which based on Chinese tradition. Glory R. O. C. centennial, the NCO will keep exploring tradition, standing steadily on our soil, observe contemporary, take every step cautiously, and to cultivate a firm Taiwanese aesthetic taste by performing each concert. The program of the NCO in this year features the Taiwanese musical characteristics. We try to provide various kinds of program, to link the society and to realize culture in every corner. There is no “us” or “them” in music, there is only touch, express emotion here. We welcome everyone join us and to be “purely touched” and appreciate the beauty of Taiwan’s traditional Chinese music.

有著豐厚的文化基底，代表著臺灣社會文化進步起 飛的見證，臺灣國家國樂團成軍二十七年以來，一直是臺 灣國樂發展重要的力量。在新的樂季當中，我們很高興在 此向大家獻上2011年臺灣國家國樂團新樂季的詳細節目介 紹，期待與大家共聚在我們每一場精采的音樂會之中。 未來的傳統來自今天的創新。臺灣國家國樂團不斷成 長壯大，2011年新樂季共有五個系列演出，展現本團對於 經典的追求，也表達我們渴望跟社會共享音樂的企圖心。 更重要的是，我們要落實全民美學，擴大校園巡迴以及社 會推廣，籌畫附屬團隊，廣邀社會各階層參與，提供更多 的專業學習與實習互動的機會。 身為文建會國立傳統藝術總處籌備處的一份子，我們 今年也將首度與傳統藝術中心合作舉辦「國樂研習營」， 社會各界年輕學子都可以透過研習營與臺灣國家國樂團優 秀的團員們一起上課，一起學習，精進演奏的技巧；要讓 對於國樂有興趣的大小朋友們都可以有所收穫。 寶島走一圈，除了人間美景與各色美食，我們期待無 論走到哪裡，都可以聽見臺灣國家國樂團的動人之音，我 們將主動深入各鄉鎮，帶去多元動人又有趣的國樂作品， 讓音樂自己說話，讓臺灣充滿和諧樂音之美，臺灣國家國 樂團，責無旁貸。
The rich cultural basis that Taiwan currently encompasses represents the testimony of the cultural progress in Taiwan. For the past 27 years, the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan has been the most important provider of traditional Chinese music in Taiwan. During the upcoming musical season ahead, we are happy to present you with a detailed program of what you can look forward to in 2011 as well as an introduction of the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan. We look forward to having everyone gathered to absorb each spectacular concert. The traditions that we may hold dear in the future come from the originality of things we do today. With this being a focal point the NCO is continuously growing in strength. To showcase this ever-growing strength, the Orchestra is attempting to share their music with society while influencing them with the pursuit of the classics along with the passion that we (Taiwan) have sustained. There will be five series in the new music season of 2011. Some of the most important goals that we want to implement are universal esthetics, the expansion of the campus tour and the popularization to all societies. We are going to plan different kinds of subsidiary teams, invite all sectors of society to participate, and offer more opportunities of professional learning together with interactive practice. As a working member of the Preparatory Office of the National Headquarters of Taiwan Traditional Arts, we (the Orchestra) are going to hold a “Traditional Chinese Music Camp” aided by the Center for Traditional Arts. This will be the first time this collaboration has taken place. The young people in the community are encouraged to improve their performing skills by going to class and learning with the members of NCO. They will share the knowledge they have gathered from research papers of traditional Chinese music as well as make adults and children who are interested in traditional Chinese music grow more musically sound. Besides the magnificent scenery and the multitude of delicacies in Taiwan, we expect to be able to hear the beautiful music of the NCO wherever we go. We will take the initiative in going to every city, town or community to show people many kinds of entertaining yet stunning traditional Chinese musical works and let the music do the talking. It is the NCO’s unavoidable responsibility to let Taiwan feel all the beauty of the harmonious music they’ve created.

R. O. C. Centennial also marks the 27th anniversary of the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan. The audience in Taiwan also witnessed the NCO’s music achievements from the past. NCO will continue exploring the classic world and interpreting the music in a contemporary way. We are also passionate to combine Western music, Taiwanese opera, Henan opera and aboriginal music together, so that none of those precious treasures will be absent from the traditional Chinese music world. And as always, we see our members as the most important core assets. In this new season, the outstanding musicians in the orchestra all have an opportunity to demonstrate their talents to the audience. As a national performing art group, the NCO has proposed five grand series theme concerts, including “Taiwan, how Beautiful!” series, “Super．Music” series, “Style Maestro” series, “We Are Family” series and “Music Tour to 25 Cities” tour. We hope by presenting those grand five series, we can show the society NCO’s pursuit of delicate music and its realization of social responsibility. In this year’s music concert series, the talented perform cast, the form, the content, and the songs within it all convey the vital meaning of inheriting and innovations. Most of the invited guest conductors and performers are all extraordinary musicians who are fairly well-known in the world Asian Music field. We expect to transmit the immeasurable meaning and intension in the music through the cooperation process. As for the perform form and content, other than the typical types like traditional Chinese small ensembles, large orchestras, and concertos, another new form which still features on Chinese music but combines various music genres is displayed. For instance, the combination of piano, Western orchestra and Chinese orchestra conveys an important message that music is indeed without borderlines. Such cross-culture blend, integrating Chinese and Western music, will surely arouse another sense of beauty in the music. Moreover, the content and songs organization of the new music season provide a brand new vision. The multiple performances with Western music, Taiwanese opera, Henan opera and aboriginal music and the song organization of various music genres from traditional Tujia percussion music to contemporary innovative Chinese music songs convey the core belief of NCO, that is “ Inherit the tradition, and open a new phase.” Inheriting from the past and carrying on for the future, we are eager to turn to the new page and start a new dimension for traditional Chinese music. We will also invite more composers to write pieces, discover the excellent local composers in Taiwan, so they can compose more works which can develop the orchestra’s characteristics. And this is certainly also one social responsibility of the Orchestra, as a public art performing group. New year, new dimension! 臺灣國家國樂團 National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan 探索傳統，立足本土，擁抱當代，與時代新 思維邁開大步，臺灣國家國樂團用創作為臺灣傳 統音樂紮根，用演出傳遞臺灣美學品味。以國際 舞台為演出，用醇厚的傳統音樂深化臺灣之美。 「臺灣國家國樂團」隸屬行政院文化建設委 員會「國立臺灣傳統藝術總處籌備處」，本團 前身為1984年教育部成立之「國立藝專實驗國樂 團」，原以國家與文化、民族與音樂、理論與實 務、教學與演奏等學術研究與發展為宗旨，冠以 「實驗」二字概括。之後為執行教育部藝術教育 推廣及文建會藝術季等全國性文化活動中有關之 傳統音樂項目，1990年由行政院通過「實驗國樂 團設置要點」。2008年1月起因應任務功能升級 與演奏發展所需，奉命改隸國立中正文化中心代 管。同年3月結束任務編組正式成立為「臺灣國 家國樂團」迄今。 作為國家級表演藝術團隊，廣納臺灣民間傳 統及當代音樂，融合戲劇、舞蹈、美術、詩歌、 文學等各類元素，以多元藝術形態展現當代的國 樂團新形象。多年來本團內化傳統，冶創新為一 爐，提升藝術質感，多度入選「台新藝術獎」年 度十大節目，成績斐然。對於社區文化以及傳統 音樂推廣不遺餘力，每年均安排社區與慈善巡 演，用傳統音樂豐富國民的生活水準。作為文化 外交大使的一員，本團演奏行跡遍及維也納、法 國、捷克、匈牙利、紐約、馬來西亞以及北京、 上海、南京、杭州、無錫等城市，留下了臺灣音

In the face of globalization, the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan maintains its roots in the local Taiwanese legacy, exploring treasured traditions which have been handed down by the ancestors through many generations, while at the same time embracing contemporary music, with the goal of heading down the road toward an era characterized by new concepts. As a state-level performing group, the mission of the NCO is not only to promote new musical works from local music sources, but also to transmit the beauty of Taiwanese music through performance. The primary goals of the ensemble are to raise the caliber of both Taiwanese traditional and contemporary music, to develop more opportunities to perform all over the world, as well as to enhance the beauty of the abundant tradition of Chinese music. The NCO was founded in 1984 as the “National Art Academy Experimental Chinese Orchestra” by the Ministry of Education, with the mission of managing the development of music, musical education, academic study and performance. Because of the group’s focus on implementing the MOE policies of art education and managing the Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA) activities, among which were many nation-wide cultural activities relating to traditional music, in 1990, the Administration renamed the group the “National Experimental Chinese Orchestra”; in the year 2008, it was renamed again, this time to its present title of the “National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan”. Due to an increase in invitations from outside groups to perform, as well as the importance of its increased responsibilities, in January of 2008, the government placed the NCO under the administration of the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center, but as of March of the same year, the orchestra, which takes responsibility for collecting, researching, performing, recording, and publishing works of traditional music, is being administered by the new Taiwan Center for Traditional Arts under the CCA. Recently, the musical works which the orchestra has chosen to play have included the traditional, but have also embraced the contemporary; furthermore, the group has added more elements to the music, such as drama, dance, art, poetry and literature, in order to present multi-faceted styles as well as to create the modern look of Chinese music. During these years, the group has successfully combined elements of legacy and contemporary styles to upgrade the quality of music as well to make a significant contribution to the culture as a whole. After so many years of endeavor, the NCO was nominated as one of the top 10 annual programs by the Taishin Arts Award Committee; this is a great honor in the art field, proving that significant achievement has been made. At the same time, the NCO also serves as the cultural ambassador of the Republic of China; in this role, it has traveled to many countries all over the world, such as France, the U.S., the Czech Republic, Austria, and Malaysia, as well as to various cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangchow. In these places and in many other areas, the group has spread the beauty of music, and has also exemplified the high level of development of Chinese music in Taiwan.

The country is celebrating its 100th anniversary of founding this year, and NCO would like to dedicate the very first concert in 2011 to the special occasion. Pianist Linda Yeh is one of the very few Taiwanese musicians who is dedicated to performing Western classical music as well as writing compositions. The concert will include a suona concerto, a piece of work that fuses traditional Hakka songs with Hakka Ba-Yin which is overall festive in tone, an alto sheng concerto and an erhu composition. Hsieh Yu-Wei, who walked away with the title of Best Hakka Performer at the 15th Golden Melody Awards, will be the host of the event.

When they stand on the stage, they are not hesitant to show the proudest voice of Taiwan to the world. Their performance is widely recognized, both in Taiwan and abroad. In 2010, the Taiwan Aboriginal Children Chorus was invited to perform for the opening of the Taiwan Pavilion during the Shanghai Expo. It received a very high reputation – the guests described it as “The sound of heaven.” This time we invite one of the best young Taiwanese conductors – Maestro Huang Guang-You. And for this occasion, the NCO has arranged several pieces based on aboriginal themes. We hope to take you into the aboriginal world and you can enjoy the concert with us!

In this abroad tour, the NCO hopes to present a program that combines the Taiwan folk culture, literature and the across strait aesthetic on contemporary arts. Our repertoire not only includes Taiwanese pieces, but also the collaboration with the local musicians. We hope by doing so, we can create a new chemistry, in which the sound and human meet and challenge each other, so the performing arts energy that is stored cross strait can be brought out. With the NCO’s music, Taiwan’s soft power also gets a chance to be shown in the world stage.

In the concert, viewers are invited to join a music celebration dominated by some of the best vibrant and powerful Chinese music. Among them is “The Spectacular Mountain,” which portrays the famous Chinese patriot and military general Yue Fei who fought for the Southern Song Dynasty against the Jurchen armies of the Jin Dynasty. The concert will be conducted by Kuo Lien-Chan. Su Hsien-Ta, one of the most famous violinists in Taiwan, will be playing solo in the performance.

海洋激昂 浪起潮落 一如生命起盪 青山無語 眼底盡收 人們的悲歡離合 音樂界吹起環保風！臺灣國家國樂團「名家經典音樂會」將邀請琵琶獨奏家楊 惟與民俗打溜子演奏家黃傳舜來臺，詮釋作曲家蘇文慶的《大海之歌》與金復載《 山坳裡的變奏》，有山有海，要讓樂迷的心靈很環保。 這場音樂會所邀請的琵琶獨奏家楊惟，師承琵琶大師劉德海，2000年曾受邀加 入大提琴家馬友友的十年「絲路計劃」。「打溜子」則是湘西深具民族風格的音樂 藝術，展現了純樸的民族生活樣貌，箇中高手黃傳舜，將在臺灣展現出截然不同的 湘西風情。 NCO is proud to present a concert featuring two Chinese musicians--Yang Wei on pipa and Huang Chan-Shun on percussion. In the concert, Yang and Huang will lead music buffs on a special journey that is evocative and full of surprises by playing music works of two famed composers—Su Wen-Ching from Taiwan and Chin Fuh-Zai from China. Pipa musician Yang Wei learned the techniques of the Chinese music instrument under the teaching of the late master pipa player Liu De-Hai. He had been performing with Shanghai Chinese Orchestra before joining the “Silkroad Project” proposed by famed cellist Yoyo Ma. In the concert, percussionist Huang Chan-Shun will introduce the art of “Dailiuzi,” an ancient folk art form with a huge repertoire of set tunes that are very expressive and involve unique playing skills, for the very first time for the Taiwan audience. Dailiuzi also refers to an age-old percussion instrument of the Tujia ethnic group.

To celebrate its birthday, the NCO will hold a special concert under the planning of principle guest conductor Su Wen-Ching. Apart from playing Chinese orchestral music classics, the NCO will perform with Cantonese opera singer Hong Hong, erhu player Kenny Wen, saxophonist Yen ChinShyan and jazz drummer Rich Huang.

Hong Hong is the daughter of famous performer Ma Shi-Zeng and Hong Xian-Nu. Hong Hong started learning how to perform since childhood before moving to Taiwan, where she set up the Hong Hong Cantonese Opera Company, which established a remarkable reputation. 爵士鼓 黃瑞豐
Kenny Wen is Taiwan’s first erhu player who has a wide range of different performing styles. With a distinctive personal style, Wen has been invited to perform in different parts of the world. Rich Huang has been hailed as a local jazz master. Yen Chin-Shyan is one of the few saxophonists in Taiwan who express a strong interest in Chinese orchestral music. Since he returned to Taiwan, he has become one of the faculty members at National Taiwan University of Arts’ Department of Music. He now serves as the music director of the Taipei Saxophone Ensemble and the chief player of the Taipei Symphonic Winds.

“The Masters” series was introduced last year which has been wellreceived from the local Chinese music lovers. We are lucky to have invited Zhang Guo-Yong, a famed maestro conductor and the director of Shanghai Grand Theatre, as the conductor for the concert. It will be the first time Zhang works with NCO. Chen Chung-Sheng is one of the best dizi musician in Taiwan. As a dedicated researcher and teacher of traditional Chinese music, he also maintains the connection with music creation, and in the concert, he will debut a dizi concerto. The music event will also be a great chance for the audience to get to know two of the new rising Taiwanese musicians—Liu Chen-Ling and Liu KuangYu, both are young and talented.

Guan, a renowned Chinese-born composer based in Canada, is one of the very musicians who is skilled both in the form of Chinese and Western classical music. Famed for his diverse musical creation and strong personal style, Guan will interpret several of his own compositions in the special arranged concert.

The performance will feature NCO performing with three soloists, Chu YiPing on cello, Huang Chun-Ling on percussion and Yeh Wen-Hsuan on erhu. Chu had been the principal cellist with Basle Symphony Orchestra of Switzerland for 15 years, while Huang has been praised by Guan as a talented musician, and Yeh is a new emerging erhu artist.

This year marks the third year of the production and the orchestra’s originality in blending Chinese music with theater has invited much public attention. The Adventure is full of imagination and welcomes parents to bring along children for a show of courage and challenge. The story-telling is accompanied by sounds from various traditional Chinese musical instruments, which makes the atmosphere all the more exciting. 正所謂「三分前場，七分後場」，黃香蓮歌仔戲團這次將與臺灣國家國樂團合作演出，國樂團與歌仔戲音樂 表演融合，豐富了歌仔戲的音樂領域，國樂團後場加上層次分明，有戲有淚的主角與劇情，要讓戲迷重溫黃香蓮 台上功力。 Much to her fans’ delight, Huang Xiang-Lian, a Taiwanese opera performer will return to the stage to play her classic role -- Tang Yin, better known by his courtesy name Tang Bo-Hu, who was an outstanding scholar, painter, calligrapher and poet of the Ming Dynasty period who fell in love with maidservant Qiuxiang. Huang decided to act again after accepting the invitation of the Preparatory Office of the National Headquarters of Taiwan Traditional Arts.It has been 10 years since she put on her last official performance on stage. This time, Huang is excited to present long-desired Taiwanese opera classics to the audience once again. In cooperation with the NCO, the Huang Xian-Lian Taiwanese Opera Company is pleased to stage the opera show featuring Chinese orchestra music. The performance features a lively protagonist and an engaging plot. Fans will be able to see Huang’s excellent performing skills again.

Over the years, the troupe has been actively engaged in cross-cultural productions and infused elements of modern theatre to the traditional art form, thus transforming Bangzi opera into a genre with strong Taiwanese flavor.
