2  BELVIN 40TH ANNIVERSARY FEMALE SALE
W
Welcome
elcome to our 40th Anniversary Sale! It is our pleasure to showcase our program, and the maternal strength behind it, in a way that we never have before. In 1978, Gavin and Mabel bought their first purebred Angus females, with their first calves being registered in 1979. This was a departure from their respective upbringings, as Mabel grew up on a Horned Hereford ranch, while Gavin was raised with Shorthorn cattle. The most impactful of those original females came from Charlie Forsyth’s “Blackface Angus” herd. Blackface Blossom 104J was the beginning of the “Lady Blossom” cow family, of which the majority of the herd traces back to today. The “Erica” cow family also started with that group, while the “Georgina” family was also founded from the Blackface herd. From those beginnings, the herd has evolved to what it is today, with 300+ mother cows. Belvin Angus has always been a family operation. Colton and Quinn grew up very involved with showing cattle in the Junior Angus and 4H programs, as well as in the day to day operations of the ranch. In 2008 Colton came back to the operation full time, moving to the original Hamilton land, which was homesteaded by Gavin’s grandfather, Matthew Hamilton and his brother Thomas Hamilton, in 1892. The herd underwent a growing period after Colton came back and grew to just over 200 cows. Quinn and her then boyfriend, and now husband, Brendyn Elliot, came to the business full time in 2016. Expansion occurred again, with the cow herd and farming acres of the operation growing. In 2016 Mabel and Gavin built a new house, leaving the original Belvin Angus yard for Quinn and Brendyn. The sale barn and “bull farm” were built in 2017, on the same quarter of land as Mabel and Gavin’s current house. For a sale and an occasion like this, we wanted to do something special, so we are offering the very top of our bred heifers, as well as heifers calves representing our exciting new herdsires, and a pregnant recipient and embryos from the best of our frozen genetics. This past April, Scott visited and went through our group of 80 yearling heifers. He picked out his 20 favorite heifers, and those are represented as the “choice lots”. He also
picked 30 more heifers, of which the balance of the bred heifer offering comes from. No heifers were hidden or held back. These females are the best of our replacements, and parting with them isn’t easy. We have extremely high expectations for these females right out of the gate. The service they are carrying to our Sitz Major 707F herd bull only adds to the potential return of these females. The heifer calf division will be lead off by the first two daughters of the $69,000 Poss Maverick to sell, as well as exciting daughters of Montana Octane, Baldridge Mercenary and Baldridge Discovery. For years we have focused on raising sound, functional bulls that can work in tough conditions anywhere. These females have the same attributes that our bulls do, and we expect a lot from them no matter where they go. We are excited to see what they can do for their new owners. They will be available to be viewed anytime before the sale at the ranch. In the days leading up to the sale they will be displayed at the sale barn. We invite you to join us on sale day, with the sale starting at 5 pm, and a steak dinner afterwards. If you can’t make the sale, please contact any one of us, or the sale consultants, for more information on the heifers. The sale will also be broadcast online at DLMS.ca for anyone interested in bidding online. Videos of the heifers will be posted before the sale. Thank you very much for your interest, and to all the people who have supported our program. We hope to see you on October 25th. Gavin and Mabel, Colton, Brendyn and Quinn

The Power of Cow Families The “Lady Blossom” family
The “Georgina” family
In 1978, Gavin traveled with our good friend, the late Fred Noad, to visit Charlie Forsyth, and his Blackface Angus herd near Bashaw. Charlie parted with four females that day. It took some convincing, but he included Blackface Blossom 104J in that group. Charlie stated that “he shouldn’t be selling her”, but he did. A granddaughter of the great RR Rito 707, 104J is the foundation of the Lady Blossom cow family, which is the backbone of the Belvin Angus herd today.
The Georgina family traces back to two cows, who also came from Charlie Forsyth. Blackface Georgina 18P and Blackface Georgina 11J. They were a daughter and granddaughter of the same cow, Stampede Georgina 487’71, who was out of a female from the Valleymere herd of the Spady family. Gavin tried to buy 11J in his initial group of females in 1978, but was told she wasn’t for sale. He later bought her as an 11 year old cow. 18P was purchased from the Trans Canada Sale. All of the Georgina’s in the sale trace back to these two cows.
The “Erica” family The original Erica was also included in the group of four females bought from Charlie Forsyth in 1978. Blackface Ellen 50H (she traced back to the “Ellen Erica” family) was a granddaughter of the great Camilla Chance 37T.

Emblynette 89’18 is also a Junction x Emblynette combination. We purchased a “pick of the herd flush” from Jason George at the 2009 World Angus Forum. The cow we chose was SAV Emblynette 5486, who is a full sister to the dam of SAV International 2020. We flushed 5486 to Belvin Rebel and HF Kodiak, and the grandam of 7A and dam of 7B came as a result. 89’15 is a carbon copy of her mother, with a tremendous amount of capacity. The 201’12 cow has produced six bulls and only the one heifer, which makes the chance of parting with 89’12 even tougher. Her, 2019 born Maverick son will be a feature next spring. Service Sire Sitz Major 707F
When we committed to having this sale, we thought it would be impressive to have all the females bred to one bull. It would be even better if it was one bull that we owned, and could have on display at the sale. We set out to find a double digit CE, negative BW “heifer bull” who still had muscle and stoutness, as well as an outcross pedigree that could be used on all the heifers in the sale. Not always the easiest thing to find. We found Major 707F amongst a very impressive sire group at Sitz Angus. Not only did he meet our requirements for calving ease and muscle shape, but he is one of the longest bulls we have owned, while also having a 116 WW ratio, very strong performance numbers, an excellent disposition and impeccable feet. We are very excited for his calves and what his service will offer to the females in the sale.
